Widow Maker Survivor Allan Drinkwater

On September 14, Mannville Firefighter Allan Drinkwater suffered a “widow maker” heart attack. According to Webmd.com a widow maker is when you get a big blockage at the beginning of the left main artery or the left anterior descending artery (LAD).

They’re a major pipeline for blood. If blood gets 100% blocked at that critical location, it may be fatal without emergency care.

At the time of the attack Drinkwater was working in Lloydminster and recognized that the symptoms he was experiencing was a heart attack, knowing that it was serious Drinkwater realized he needed to get to

the hospital right away, so he drove himself which was 4 blocks away.

“I experienced extreme chest and back pain, I was sweating and couldn’t breathe.

My arms were numb, and by the time I got to the hospital, my legs went numb. I was scared I would never see my wife or children again,” explained Drinkwater.

Even though Drinkwater was still having a heart attack he wanted to call his wife Sabrina Perron as he knew this could be the last time he heard her voice. Once Drinkwater arrived at the hospital in Edmonton he underwent emergency surgery where a stent was placed.

restaurant had more orders in that day than they had in the past month.

Mayor Caroline McAuley mentioned that not only did this proje c t help keep local businesses stay afloat, but it helped businesses increase their reach beyond Vermilion and the local community.

On September 24, AUMA Director of Client Development Michael O’Mara awarded Town of Vermilion leaders with the AUMA Sustainability in Action Award.

“They’ve done quite a bit of work t o m a k e Ve r m i l i o n s u s t a i n a b l e ,” commented O’Mara.

The Town was awarded the Municipal Sustainability Award for its campaign, #VermilionOnlineFestival, which was launched on the last week of April for five weeks to help support local businesses. The Online Festival was a way for local businesses to be taught online marketing to mitigate the effect COVID19 and the lockdown had on them, and hoping to ensure they remain sustainable businesses. Additionally, in giving businesses an opportunity to remain open, the campaign aimed to help mitigate crime and unemployment.

G3 Construction Well Underway

G3 started construction on their state of - the - art grain elevator in the County of Vermilion, just outside Vermilion in March of this year. The progress has been steady over the last few months with FWS Group as the overall General Contractor and Design Builder for the elevator.

The company is also the Construction Manager for all the Civil Works including the rail and road design and construction.

The most prominent structure of the build thus far are the concrete silos, which were constructed in five and a half days. “ The process is called slip form construction or “Slip” for short. It involves the continuous pouring of concrete from the bottom to the top of the silos. As the concrete is poured into the forms and the lower half begins to cure a series of jacks lifts the form work up allowing us to place rebar and fill the top of the form again, this process is then repeated over and over.

This is a fairly easy main dish to make, with some Mexican flare, and hearty warmth for our colder d ays. Yo u c an u s e any type of beans you like, such as black beans, kidney beans, white beans etc. If you use canned pork and beans be sure to reduce the salt in the recipe, as the beans will already have lots of salt. I like using old cheddar cheese as it has more flavour, but you can use any type you like. Tortilla wraps come plain, spinach or tomato, and any kind

will work well. A key to success is to get the mixture seasoned just right, and to have it thick and not runny. If there is too much moisture, then the tortilla wrap will become soggy on the bottom as it bakes. This can be served with any or all of the following: a fresh salsa, hot sauces, sour cream, chopped cilantro, chopped tomato, a fresh garden salad, taco chips and guacamole. Leftover tortillas can be wrapped in saran wrap and refrigerated for lunches the next day. You can also just make the wraps you need, and freeze the remainder of the filling to use later. This recipe will make 9 or 10 wraps. When the filled tortilla wraps go into the oven to cook,

they get a wonderful crispness, and really adds to the texture. If you like that crispiness, be sure to space them on the baking sheet so it goes around more of the wrap.

Tortilla Wraps 1 1/2 pounds of ground meat 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 1/2 cups chopped onions (medium chop) 2 cloves of garlic finely chopped 1 can black beans (drained) 1/2 cup tomato paste or one small can 1/4 cup water 2 tablespoon chilli powder 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon pepper

2 teaspoons sea salt (or less to taste) Soft tortilla wraps grated cheddar cheese (old) Preheat the oven to 350 degree. Fry the ground meat in the oil in a fry pan, add the chopped onions and garlic. Add all the remaining ingredients except the tortilla wraps and cheese. Allow to cook until the onions are softened, and all the flavors are blended. Spoon two large spoonful onto each wrap and top with cheddar cheese, roll and place seam side down in a baking dish. When you are done, top with more grated cheddar cheese. Bake at 350 degrees, until the cheese is melted, about 10 minutes.

person can afford an extra 5% or 10% from their income if a sales tax is put on everything they need to exist. Any sales tax is always a regressive tax where the poor pay more. Alberta has gone to one of the lowest provincial income taxes in Canada. If we added a bit more to a progressive provincial income tax instead we could be out of debt in very few years.

The Premier should grow up, be an adult and tell people the truth. If our provincial income tax was structured like the other large provinces we would not have a need for all his cuts.

With so many s c h o o l s ove r t h e years in the Vermilion area, and so many teachers at those sc hools, a few are always going to stand out.

Today, I am going to look at Agnes Tait.

Agnes had applied for the position of teacher at the Allandale School and her application was accepted with an agreement she would teach for ten months. She was described as tall with a pale complexion and red hair parted in the centre and combed back and braided into a coil. In her late-20s and described as quiet but with a determi-

nation to utilize every moment of the day to teach the children everything she could.

She had a timetable arranged in advance and hung on the wall and the students knew exactly when they were to study, what their textbook routine would be and more. On Friday’s afternoons, things were more relaxed and the students had free time. Tait was well loved by the students for her attentiveness and care with teaching them.

On one Friday she took time to teach them about the dictionary and how to use it, reading through several entries over the afternoon for the children. She would show them books about birds, animals, insects and more.

Sadly, it was not to last.

One day, a Mr. Souder was there to greet the children at the school instead of Agnes. When they children asked where she was, he had to give them the sad news that she had passed away in her sleep the night before and that school was cancelled for the day.

Souder added: “This wonderful girl was always up early and dressed herself ready for school. She would come to have her breakfast with us. She never needed to be called. This morning there was no sound of activity in her room. We were going to sit down to our table without her but Mrs. Souder felt anxious about her so she took the liberty to knock on her door and walk in. She could scarcely believe her eyes.”

For her students, looking back at the care she gave them with her lessons, they realized what a special person they had for such a short time. Nora Williamson would say years later of her: “I am quite sure she felt within herself that her health was weakening and that she must tell us everything she could while she was able. And then, one morning, she was no longer there.”

This year has been particularly hard for the Drinkwater family as Drinkwater was laid off in March due to COVID-19, his wife Sabrina’s Dad passed away in May from a heart attack, their sewer backed up and a their neighbours tree fell on his shed.

Drinkwater is well known for volunteer work and overall willingness to help where he can.

The Vermilion Voice | September 29, 2020 “He gives and gives and gives and never takes a minute for himself,” said Firefighter Dolly Dalton.

Dalton, other fellow firefighters from Innisfree and Mannville, and community members wanted to do something special for Drinkwater as he goes through recovery, so Dalton organized a workbee.

The workbee consisted of yard maintenance, roof repair, repainting the exterior of the house, and some fence repair.

Community members prepared food for the Drinkwater family of nine, and some businesses donated supplies for the repairs.

Roof repairs were supplied by Gilbert Roofing, ABC Drywall assisted in painting, Rona donated lumber for fencing repairs, and a swing set was purchased and built for the children. Numerous others pitched in their time and money including Top Gun Pipe Inspections and Ken Frimark.

“Everybody has kind of gone above and beyond,” commented Dalton.

A GoFundMe by the title “Support for the Drinkwater Family” was organized by his cousins Kyle and Rhonda Kaziechko on September 18, which as of Septem-

ber 25, has reached $8,600 out of their $10,000 goal.

Drinkwater is amazed by the community support and would like to say thank you to everyone who has been involved.

“The community has been absolutely mind-blowing and offered everything from dropping off meals to rides for the children.

We were emotional and star-struck, I even broke down crying. I don’t have words for the amount of people who have stepped up – appreciation doesn’t even cut it,” said Drinkwater.

World Teachers Day: Leading In Crisis, Reimagining The Future Allan Chase Submitted

This year’s theme for World Teachers Day is “Leading In Crisis, Reimagining the Future”. I’m not sure I agree with the premise behind the statement. There are aspects of our society most definitely in crisis but our goal in Education is to adapt to the challenges that lay in front of us. If we create systems, leaders and students that can adapt to the challenge that a worldwide pandemic has created,

then I feel confident that we are creating students that can ‘reimagine the future’ and whatever that brings.

Education in 2020 is very different than it was 30, 20 or even 10 years ago. Strategies, curriculum or practices that seem common place today were innovative and brand new not so long ago. Education, like almost all aspects of our life is in a constant state of change and as educators our greatest challenges is staying current or even trying to stay ahead of

those changes. We want to help create students that are able to adapt and flourish, because it is almost impossible to know exactly what that future will look like.

School life during Covid-19 is a microcosm of the same challenges. We are asking students, staff, parents and the public to operate in a very different fashion than we are used to. It has meant changing not only our practices, but our mindset. For most of us changing how we think is the greatest challenge because

change often makes us uncomfortable.

If we can accept change as a growth mindset, the future is boundless and exciting. We can address the enormous challenge of education during a worldwide pandemic, head on and with confidence and excitement rather than fear and doubt.

I am very proud to be a teacher and continue to be amazed at the incredible work I get to be apart of everyday. Happy teacher’s day everyone!

The year 2020 marks the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations and the 30th Anniversary of the International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP). This year has also seen an emergence of COVID-19, that has caused an upheaval across the world. Considering the higher risks confronted by older persons during the outbreak of pandemics such as COVID-19, policy and programmatic interventions must be targeted towards raising awareness of their special needs. Recognizing older persons contributions to their own health and the multiple roles they play in the preparedness and response phases of current and future pandemics is also important.

The UNIDOP 2020 event will also promote the Decade of Healthy Ageing (2020-2030) and help bring together UN experts, civil society, government and the health professions to discuss the five strategic objectives of the Global Strategy and Action plan on Ageing and Health while noting the progress and challenges in their realization. The global strategy is well integrated into the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while ageing issues cut across the 17 goals, especially Goal 3 which aims to “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being of all at all

The objectives of UNIDOP 2020 are to: 1. Inform participants about the strategic objectives for the Decade of Healthy Ageing.

2. Raise awareness of the special health needs of older persons and of their contributions to their own health and to the functioning of the societies in which they live.

3. Increase awareness and appreciation of the role of the health care workforce in maintaining and improving the health of older persons, with special attention to the nursing profession.

4. Present proposals for reducing the health disparities between older persons in the developed and developing countries, so as to “Leave no one behind”.

5. Increase understanding of the impact of COVID19 on older persons and its impact on health care policy, planning, and attitudes.

Splash Park Coming To Marwayne

A new not-for-profit organization, “Friends Of Marwayne�, is funding the construction of a new splash park in Marwayne.

The idea for the Splash Park was brought forward to the Village council by Marwayne Resident Heather Delaney, after Delaney suggested it to CAO Shannon Harrower. “She has definitely been my eyes and ears,� Delaney said.

Delaney brought the idea forward to increase attraction in Marwayne, and for convenience, as she found that many Marwayne residents would travel to splash parks in Vermilion or Lloydminster.

After Council completed a facebook poll to see the Village’s interest in the Splash

Park, they approved the project. Delaney created Friends of Marwayne to be able to apply for grants that Municipalities are not eligible for. Friends of Marwayne will be covering the cost of construction, and the Village will take care of the Splash Park upkeep. “In a perfect world, I would love to have it by next summer,� commented Delaney.

The Friends of Marwayne are in the process of setting up donations and getting fully registered as a nonprofit organization. Many grants nonprofit organizations are eligible for require a matching of funds, so fundraising is crucial for the project’s success.

Vermilion Credit Union Announces Community Care Winners

Submitted Over the past 20 years, the Vermilion Credit Union proudly hosted their Annual Golf Tournament to raise funds for local charities and organizations. Unfortunately, they had to suspend the tournament this summer because of the Covid19 pandemic. Even though we weren’t able to host a day of fun out on the course, they still want to celebrate this 20-year

endeavour by supporting local groups who continue to contribute to their community in great ways. They are excited to donate $1,000 each to 20 different community groups within Mannville and Vermilion. “One of the key roles of a Credit Union is to support the financial wellbeing of its members and the communities where we all live and work. We take this commitment to heart and is something that’s of

nia Quick Facts The Canadian Air Task Force is working with the Romanian Air Force as part of NATO’s enhanced Air Policing (eAP) mission, Canada’s contribution to NATO assurance and deterrence measures. During the mission, Canadian fighter pilots hold quick reaction alert and fly training missions together with the Romanian Air Force, as well as other regional allies, to augment Romanian air policing capabilities. This includes patrolling Romanian air space and, if necessary, intercepting any aircraft that enter it without authorization.

Operation REASSURANCE demon-

strates Canada’s ability and willingness to react rapidly to international crises and to work side by side with its NATO Allies to reinforce NATO’s collective security. Air Task Force – Romania is the Air component of the mission.

While conducting their mission, the Air Task Force members are taking all the necessary precautions to minimize the risk to the safety of our personnel and the local population. Despite the limitations of operating in a COVID-19 environment, the CAF have remained agile and able to conduct successful missions around the world, all while adhering to both domestic and host nation COVID-19 safety requirements.

Team Sunweb Places 13th in Women’s Giro D’Italia

Vermilion local Alison Jackson’s professional cycling Team Sunweb placed 13th overall in the Giro d’Italia Internazionale Femminile which ended on September 19.

The team faced misfortune for the second stage of the nine-stage race, as three of the leaders had flat tires during a climb up a gravel path. This setback took away Sunbweb’s chance of having a podium placement, so the team focused on achieving stage wins.

“We were close with a couple of 4th places. On the last day, stage 9, we rode for our teammate who took 3rd on the final climb.” Jackson said, “The most beautiful day was stage 7 where we got to race laps around and through the

iconic Acquedotto Carolino, a large 3 tier aqueduct with close to 100 arches.”

Jackson and Team Sunweb is participating in the Road World Championships in Imola, Italy, which started on September 26.

Shoppers Drug Mart Women’s Walk

On September 27, Shoppers Drug Mart held a women’s walk at the JR. Robson track.

Shoppers locations across the country participate in centralized women’s walk.

In Alberta, the event is typically hosted in Edmonton or Calgary, but due to COVID19, each Shoppers location hosted their own smaller event.

Each district walks to fundraise for a different charity. Vermilion’s Shoppers Drug Mart fundraises for the Lois Hole Hospital for Women every year. As of September 27, they have raised $1,339.

SCHOOL NEWS Submitted Football and Volleyball season has started. We are following ASAA (Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association) guidelines so teams can only practice and play intramural games at this time and students must choose ONE sport to participate in exclusively. But it’s good to keep skills up and get students moving.

Many students had missed being able to be physically active with a group.

Congratulations to former Marauder Riley Starko, who was recruited to play Triple A Baseball for the Neutral Hills Wranglers in Veteran, AB. He will be attending Neutral Hills Academy this year as he plays ball.

Fall is here! Students have been taking advantage of the beautiful weather by taking their learning outdoors.

Grade ones went on an alphabet sound scavenger hunt to see how many objects that started with different letter sounds they could find around the school grounds.

Mrs. Schmit’s grade 2/3 class has enjoyed reading outside in the sunshine. Older students have been playing tennis on the courts, challenging each other and their teachers to some great matches!

Students and staff alike, are excited that the lunch room and hot lunch have started up again. Mrs. Dewing is our new cook and she is making magic happen in the kitchen. Our volleyball teams have also started practicing, only once a week for now, but we will take what we can get!

Our Learning Commons hosts two Scholastic Book Fairs each year. Funds raised from these book fairs go directly into the Learning Commons by allowing us to add new books to our collection, as well as to provide author visits and general requirements. Our fall Book Fair is scheduled for October 14-19. It will be

a Virtual Book Fair where staff, students and families will receive a website link to view the selection online and make their purchases online as well. Scholastic is working out the details and will provide schools with the updated version at the beginning of October.
