Heat three was a Bensmiller heat, featuring rookie driver Cruise Bensmiller racing against his esteemed and experienced uncles Kurt and Chance Bensmiller. Tim Hortons Camp Day

On August 12, Tim Hortons had Camp Day. The initiative of Camp Day is to give children from low-income families the opportunity to have a camp experience. Tim Hortons has camps across North America, and works with local organizations for children and youth to determine who would benefit from the opportunity to attend a Tim Hortons camp. Tim Hortons Camps consist of a multi-year program of various activities

intended to boost self esteem, leadership skills, and more. However, due to COVID19, the Tim Hortons Camp program will look a little different this year. Tim Hortons eCamp began last month, and will be offering activities that build the same skills as the in person camps, in an online setting. All iced and hot coffee purchases on August 12 went towards the Tim Hortons Camp Foundation. Additionally, customers could purchase a $1 rent-a-tent donation, or donate $2 to get a camp day bracelet.

On August 13, Karen and Sue of the Derwent Golden Age Club were at the Vermilion Co-op selling tickets for a Quilt Raffle to be drawn October 17. The quilt was designed and made by Elizabeth (Liz) Kisters. There are 1200 tickets printed and are only 3/$10.00. William Osinchuk passed away August 6, 2020, in Edmonton at the age of 91 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Marjorie (nee Gregor) and children Darrell (Ruthanne), Jim, Sharen, Janice (Blaine) along with five surviving grandchildren (Julia, Amy, Korey, Stephanie, Alyssa) Willie is also survived by two siblings (Horace and Eva) and nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents (William and Annie), thirteen siblings and one granddaughter (Jamie) A private graveside service and interment will be held at the Landonville Cemetery. Double Chocolate Oat Zucchini Muffins

Zucchinis are now ready in the garden for many. Some of my favorite ways to enjoy zucchini are as a spiralized pasta with a fresh parsley pesto sauce, or as a moist chocolate zucchini cake complete with chocolate cream cheese icing. I have published both of those recipes in past issues, but here is a new favorite for you. It has the added benefit of heart healthy oats, dark chocolate, healthy fats, and just the right amount of caramel sweetness from brown sugar. This recipe uses basic ingredients and as always home baking is much healthier than commercially made baking. When selecting cocoa powder, it’s good to know that there are two types. One is called dutched, such as Frys and the other is natural, such as Hershey. When cocoaALIVE powder is dutched, it has been ADthe OR treated with an alkalizing substance. This gives the chocolate a darker color and removes some of the bitterness. Unfortunately it removes many of the beneficial antioxidants. Natural cocoa, like Hersey e again the area! has touring a lighter color, and is slightly bitter, but it is full of the beneficial antioxidants and

Some people are born in the area, some just come through, but no matter whether they stay or go, they leave their mark in the community. Such was the case with Florence E.C. Reid. Born in 1894, Florence Reid would become one of the most prominent nurses in the history of Alberta. She would grow up in the Bowtell area where her parents lived with her siblings. She would spend her time with her family and friends, and the Bowtell history book features several pictures of her skating and on the Vermilion River. She would go to school to receive her nurses’ training and then begin working as

a public health nurse. Along the way, she would begin teaching at the Vermilion Agricultural College during the school year and then switch over to being a public health nurse during the summer. She would eventually leave the Vermilion area to begin working in Hanna as a health nurse, then up to the Peace River area for the same type of work. In 1932, she joined the Canadian Red Cross Society and the following year began working at the Junior Red Cross Crippled Children’s Hospital in Calgary. She would spend the next three decades working at the hospital, becoming the director of nursing. While there, she would start the outpatient department at the hospital, and the brace shop. She would work hard to keep the hospital from being an institution for patients and instead a place where they

Dear Editor A HUGE KUDOS to Jan Scott for her letter to the Editor titled “Health Care Matters.” She warns us that the Kenney UCP Alberta government has OPENED the DOOR to PRIVATE HEALTH CARE by passing Bill 30. What does all this MEAN? It simply means that in Alberta we will eventually start paying OUT of OUR OWN POCKETS for many essential health care needs. but our basic framework of kindergarten to grade 12. It is probably very worthy of the UCP spending millions of dollars to improve and add to many of Alberta’s secondary educational institutions, schools, hospitals, roads and even core infrastructure. WONDERFUL! No doubt the tax base and revenues from future revenues from the private sector will support all of these proposed necessary upgrades. At the same time the UCP members MUST REMEMBER that the health needs of all Albertans has to be readily addressed by all of the medical community without ANY EXTRA CHARGES. There must be NO extra health costs facing the future workforce of Alberta or the present/future Alberta citizens from 1 to 99 years old. The corporations would or could provide

health facilities and services that maybe adequate but definitely for a price that would be PROFITABLE for their pockets. THE CANADA HEALTH ACT was instituted back in the mid 1950s to 1960s to make sure all Canadians would always have adequate health services which would be provided by the Federal and Provincial governments. Then WHY does the UCP Alberta government members think they have the RIGHT to refute the government health services act in a subtle yet pervasive manner??? I ask all Albertans to make inquiries of our UCP government members in regard to this worrisome Bill 30. Open Farm Days At Chatsworth Farm

On August 15, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Chatsworth Farm participated in Alberta Open Farm Days, an open house event initiated by the province to increase farm visitation, on-farm sales, and give visitors a chance to understand where their food comes from. Chatsworth Farm is a first-generation farm begun by Rick and Johanna Wasylik, whose children, Charlotte, Alex, and Nick work on the farm and operated much of the guided tour. The family also had seven friends helping around the farm during the tour. Chatswor th O pen Farm Days consisted of a guided tour of the home

half-section of the farm and its diverse selection of livestock and crops. Alex Wasylik guided the cattle portion of the tour, and Charlotte Wasylik took over to tour visitors around chicks, laying hens, sheep, broilers and turkeys, ducks, geese, and their heritage tom turkey. Nick Wasylik operated machinery during demonstrations. Six kittens wandered around the farm, and during the tour, Lizzy the guard dog was tied up for safety. However, Lizzy typically roams freely around the farm. In addition, Johanna Wasylik gave tours of the garden, and visitors could view the greenhouse. Each portion of the tour had a station which displayed various equipment and

tools used on the farm, and had hand sanitizer available for visitors. Chatsworth Farm has more than 450 head of cattle, of which only a handful remain on pasture by the farm during the summer to avoid overcrowding. Laying hens are kept in a coop until noon to ensure all eggs are accounted for and then have the run of the farmyard, while the ducks, geese, the turkey, and sheep on occasion, are free-run all day. Tours at Chatsworth were under a registration system due to COVID-19. Tours were booked by the hour, and each hour was limited to 35 visitors at a time to allow for social distancing and to give each visitor a chance to take in each stop on the tour. Chatsworth Farm

had visitors from as far away as Edmonton. “I’m very excited about how many visitors we had register,” Charlotte Wasylik comments. Chatsworth Farm had over 160 people register to visit as of Saturday morning. Wasylik also expressed gratitude for all the extra helpers they had for the day, and their sponsors, which included the Cornerstone Co-op, Main Street Hardware, Vermilion Credit Union, and Webb’s Machinery. In addition, the Old School Cheesery had products for sale alongside the Chatsworth Farm pop-up shop, which offered beef, lamb, garden vegetables, and free-range eggs.

Dale Lovell is a Vermilion local with a rich history in local hockey, hunting, and fishing. Lovell discovered his passion for hunting and fishing in his teen years,

when he independently obtained his own supplies and began spending much of his time at the lake. He found quite a knack for fishing and hunting, as he has obtained numerous trophies for fish, ducks, and geese, and almost managed to match the record duck weight for Alberta at the time, four pounds and 12 ounces. Lovell’s duck was four pounds and 11 ounces. Love l l ’s o l d e s t tro phy is a fishing t r o p h y f r o m 19 7 7. Once he stopped

fishing, he distributed 45 gallons of fish hooks between his nieces and nephews. Lovell also invested 17 years into coaching hockey, star ting approximately in 1972. He spent five years with the Derwent Dodgers, and in that time won one tournament. Lovell looks at his time with the Dodgers fondly, remembering the tournament well. There was a misc ommuni c ation between the teams about what time the tournament was about to start, so only one goalie and three forwards on the Dodgers were ready to play at the start of the game. Finally, the rest of the team showed up and the Dodgers won the tournament. Half of the Derwent Dodgers were from Landonville, so after Lovell’s five years with the Dodgers, he switched to coach the Landonville Lords for the next 12 years. Lovell was gifted a plaque for his contribution to the team after 10 years of coaching, which out of all his trophies and plaques, he is most proud of.

The Alan Jackson Experience is back by popular demand! After the first Alan Jackson tribute show in 2018, local fans were eager to have the Alan Jackson Experience return to Vermilion. On August 20, The Alan Jackson Experience will be back in Vermilion at the Legion. Frontman of the Alan Jackson Experience Aaron Halliday grew up in a musical household and has enjoyed listening and playing music for as long as he can remember. Halliday began the Alan Jackson E xperience 25 years ago, as Jackson’s music has been a huge inspiration in

Halliday’s own creative endeavours. Due to COVID-19, 60 shows have been eliminated from Halliday’s schedule this year. Although many cancelled venues have rebooked, Halliday is eager to perform again. “It’s been a shock to the system, but it’s also given me time to write,” he said. As of August 13, the Central Zone of Alberta is down to 81 active cases. The County of Vermilion River is up to five active cases, the MD of Wainwright is down to 44 active cases, Flagstaff County is down to three active cases, Viking has had a huge jump down from 64 active cases to two active cases. The County of St. Paul has one active case, as does Cold Lake. There are no active cases to report in the MD of Bonnyville or the MD of Provost. Vermilion Town Council held a regular meeting on August 11. Council discussed a request for proposal by the Economic Development Committee that the Town of Vermilion should upgrade their website. In the previously held Economic Development Committee meeting, the committee decided to work with eSolutions to develop an app compatible with and easy to use on cellphones. Councillor Pulyk mentioned that eSolutions has previously worked with various other communities including the City of Lloydminster. “They certainly demonstrated their technological abilities to create a site that meets the needs of the community,” Councillor Pulyk explained. A motion that eSolutions develop a new town website for $44,400 in use of the $16,000 CARES grant was carried. By December, the town will have an upgraded website with cellphone compatibility and user-friendly interfacing. The council also discussed options for use of the Municipal Stimulus Program (MSP) initiated by the province. The purpose of the MSP is to “create and sustain local jobs, enhance provincial competitiveness and productivity, position communities to participate in economic growth, reduce municipal red tape to promote job-creating private sector investment,” as stated by alberta.ca. The MSP will provide $500 million capital funding for projects excluding those that have already been submitted under the Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) or the Gas Tax fund, and the MSP consists of various other stipulations. The MSP cannot exceed $493,307, the funding total for Vermilion. Due to these and various other eligibility requirements, there were three options as suggested by Vermilion Director of Finance Brian Libel, for use of the MSP by Vermilion: a sewer collection project, the broadband project, or the Beckie Scott Trail project. The recommended option was the sewer collection project, as it would allow the town to reallocate other funds towards other projects, and a higher chance of application approval. The sewer project would allow for the much-needed upgrading of Vermilion’s wastewater system. “There’s a unique opportunity that the province has afforded us to fast track that project,” Leibel comments.

Vermilion And Area Infrastructure Announcements

Submitted During his current tour of the province the Honourable Prasad Panda, Minister of Infrastructure for Alberta, will be announcing funding for eight projects in Central Alberta. These projects come under joint Federal, Provincial and Municipal funding as part of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) This Provincial government’s commitments here are announced as part of Alberta’s Recovery Plan (ARP). The ARP consists of some $10 billion infrastructure funding designed to galvanise Alberta’s economy.

In the Municipal District of Wainwright, the funding will be used to improve the Greenshields wastewater treatment lagoon and capacity, as well as reduce the risk of leaking, odour and contamination. This will help protect people’s health and keep the environment clean. Specifically this will involve the rehabilitation of the wastewater lagoon by moving the south berm; eliminating overgrown vegetation that interferes with the functionality of the lagoon; installing a new high density plastic liner to mitigate risk of leaching and contamination; and restructuring and strength-

The Town of Wainwright will also receive funding for its wastewater lagoon. The upgrade work to be carried out consists of construction of a new aerated cell; a new polishing cell; conversion of a portion of an existing aerated cell; earthworks for the construction of additional lagoon cells; underground piping upgrades to accommodate the new flow requirements; upgrades to the aeration system; a new approximately 3 m³ polishing cell; and a new outlet structure. Federal and Provisional funding is just shy of $2m while the Town will contribute $867,000. A third riding based project involves finishing the Alberta Central East Regional Water Transmission System. One ICIP project is The County

Total project cost is $33.9 million with the federal government providing $13.3 million, the province (Transportation) providing $16,625,000 and the Alberta Central East Water Corporation providing $3,975,000. This work will add a further 96.3 kilometres of line to an existing system in order to bring a safe reliable water supply to 18 communities in the counties of Minburn, Two Hills and Vermillion River. Minister Panda said: “ Building vital infrastructure is a key part of Alberta’s Recovery Plan. Ensuring communities and organizations can get started on the planning and construction of these ICIP projects figures prominently in our plan to create needed jobs and boost local economies where it matters most.”

PET OF THE WEEK ROCKY

Rocky is a very sweet and very big boy. He loves attention, and he loves going outside to play. Rocky does not particularly enjoy sharing his space with other animals, so he will need to go to a home with no other animals. We also think he would do best in a home with no young children as he can still be quite rambunctious. With that, Rocky will need some manner training, but is VERY treat motivated. Rocky is just looking for that perfect home that will just let him sit back and relax after a long day of playing and being cute.
