Government Of Alberta Invests Heavily In Vermilion’s Lakeland College

Premier Jason Kenny and Minister of Advanced Education, Demetrios Nicolaides along with dignitaries MLA for Lloydminster-Vermilion-Wainwright Garth Rowswell and President and CEO of Lakeland College Dr. Alice WainwrightStewart visited the Vermilion Animal Science building known as the W.H.T Mead Animal Science Centre on August 6 to announce a substantial funding investment in the College.

MLA Garth Rowswell opened the announcement by thanking the leadership of the College for giving him the opportunity to be the Master of Ceremonies.

“It’s a pleasure to have the Premier and Minister of Advanced Education, Demetrios Nicolaides here today and joined by Dr. Alice Wainwright-Stewart. This institution has been here for almost 110 years.

The institution provides students the opportunity to live, learn and work in rural

Alberta. Students today, like the ones here at Lakeland College are the workforce of Alberta’s tomorrow. Today’s announcement will ensure that that tradition is maintained and sustained and will continue to grow and provide educational opportunities for more generations to come. It is my pleasure and my honour to call upon the Premier of our province the Honourable Jason Kenny to provide remarks,” said Rowswell.

Once introduced Kenny thanked Rowswell for the introduction and expressed his delight on being at the college to make the announcement regarding Alberta’s Recovery Plan to ensure a strong future for Lakeland College.

“I am very pleased to announce that Alberta taxpayers are investing $17.3 million to modernize the Mead Building, the center of animal science studies here at Lakeland College. This project will create about 100 jobs this year for mostly local tradespeople and construction work-

ers. It will modernize student classrooms and research facilities and will upgrade the building’s energy efficiency,” said Kenny.

He went on to explain that this is an investment in the Alberta farmers and ranchers of the future and in the animal science research that will make them more competitive and successful producers.

“The upgrades to the Mead Building will complement other recent growth of Lakeland’s facilities including the expansion of their Vermilion Campus Farm which will soon include a Bison operation (I am told) plus a new animal health clinic and dairy learning centre and the modernization of the college’s livestock research facility. Primary agriculture and agro-food processing are only going to become more important to Alberta’s economy in the decades ahead,” stated Kenny.

Kenny also stated that as the world’s population grows and more people in the

developing world joins the ranks of the middle class the demand for safe, healthy, high-quality food is certain to rise.

“Alberta is going to need ever more sophisticated farmers and ag practices, technologies to win a greater share of that growing global market. The investments we are making here at Lakeland College will, therefore, pay big dividends for Alberta well into the future. Today’s investment comes out of our Accelerated Capital Maintenance and Renewal Program under which nearly $2 billion is being invested this year to create 10’s of thousands of jobs, building and upgrading schools, roads, hospitals, and core infrastructure. Almost $100 million of that capital maintenance and renewal has been distributed to 11 post-secondary institutions in the province creating more than 500 jobs including those that are now secure at Lakeland today,” explained Kenny.

Clothing retailer 19 8ighty 9ine has had an unexpected surge in business this year.

The business was started by Glenda Duchak seven years ago. Duchak makes various clothing including sweaters and scarves. When COVID-19 hit, Duchak

began a new route.

It was a friend of Duchak’s, who is a nurse in New York, that suggested Duchak make some masks for her and other hospital personnel in New York.

“That’s where it all began,” Duchak explained.

Since COVID -19 began, Duchak

reports to have made over 2000 face masks. Approximately 750 of which have been donated to various hospitals and the Calgary International Airport.

“I had absolutely no intention of making 2000 of anything,” Duchak said with a chuckle.

After being asked to make masks for

her friend in New York, Duchak began selling face masks through her business, 19 8ighty 9ine, and has had great success.

Kenny wrapped up his announcement by acknowledging the fact that ever y thing the government is doing now to get Alberta through the Pan d e m i c an d re c e s s i o n i s b e in g funded by government debt. “ There will be a fiscal reckoning in the future, but it is all designed to enable the private sector to resume its key role as the generator of jobs, growth and wealth including the tax revenues needed to get us out of the fiscal hole we are deeply in right now. I have no doubt that Albertans will overcome the fiscal and economic and health challenges we are facing today.

We have the people the resources and the irrepressible spirit to get it done,” said Kenny. He also went on to say that “it was just over 100 years ago that people of this community overcame the Spanish Flu and went on to build one of the most prosperous places in the world. Their children overcame the Great Depression. We have overcome greater challenges than this and we will do it by working together inspired by the entrepreneurial culture of this province which Lakeland College is such an important part. Congratulations to Lakeland, to all of the staff, the board of directors and the whole Vermilion community for what you do to support higher education and agriculture in this province.”

Minister of Advanced Education, Demetrios Nicolaides took the opportunit y to thank the Premier for the important announcement for Lakeland College and also went on to thank and recognize Dr. Alice Wainwright-Stewar t, President of Lakeland College as well as Board Chair Scott Webb, along with the student representatives, faculty representatives who had undertaken the very challenging task during the global pandemic.

“They have worked exceptionally hard to help provide an online learning

environment for our students so they can continue to their post-secondary studies in a time of adversity,” stated Nicolaides.

Nicolaides explained that over the past several weeks as part of Alberta’s Recovery Plan, Alberta’s government has announced $98 million in additional capital maintenance and renewal funding for a wide variety of post-secondary institutions.

“My government colleagues and I believe that post secondar y institution are critical to building an Alberta that is open for business, as well as building a modern and diverse workforce and societ y. Today’s ta xpayer’s announcement of more than $17 million provides an immediate boost to the region, and on top of that the resulting improvements to the Mead Building will serve the community well into the future,” explained Nicolaides who went on to say that “This project will help Lakeland College adapt to students evolving needs and ensure the regions future generations have access to high-quality, practical, relevant learning experiences.”

Wainwright-Stewar t also went on to explain that the funding will also help the centre accommodate new programs and increase enrollment and said that in the “Past 10 years enrollment in the agriculture sciences has grown 100 per cent at Lakeland College.... lab space, it ’s an investment in our region’s future.”

The Mead Animal Science Centre is named after William Mead who graduated from Lakeland College in 1927, who was noted to be a leader in everything he did, and that trait according to Wainwright-Stewar t followed him throughout his distinguished public service career in Alberta. He pioneered research in artificial insemination, he also made significant contributions to livestock production and helped establish the U of A Research Ranch at Kinsella. William Mead was inducted in the Alber ta Agriculture Hall of Fame in 1989.

There are some s a l a d s t h at a l m o s t everyone enjoys and this broccoli and grape salad is one of them. It not only tastes good, but it is very good for you. It also has a wonderful mix of creaminess, texture, crunch with both sweet and salty flavour. This salad is one of my favourites.

Broccoli is a nutrient powerhouse, with a 1/2 cup providing your daily need for vitamins C and K as well as significant amounts of Vitamin A and at least 18 other vitamins and minerals. Broccoli has antioxidant abilities, anti-inflammatory properties, and unique cell detoxification abilities. Studies have shown broccoli to decrease cholesterol, inhibit the overgrowth of Helicobacter pylori (bad bacterium) in the stomach and aid in cancer prevention. A 1/2 cup serving of broccoli has only 22 calories and provides

many health benefits. If you decide to serve cooked broccoli it is best steamed or cooked for less than 5 minutes to retain the maximum amount of nutritional benefits.

Red or purple grapes are known to be important to our health because of the flavonoids, phenolic acids and resveratrol. Studies have shown red or purple grapes to be able to protect your LDL cholesterol from oxidizing. When LDL cholesterol oxidizes it can silently cause damage in your arteries.

Substances in red grapes are antioxidants.

These substances also protect our arteries and heart while reducing blood clots and platelet clumping. These same health benefits are also found in drinking red wine. The French Paradox is the phenomena in which the French are known to eat a diet of excessive saturated fat, such as butter and lard, yet they are protected from its heart damage because of their elevated red grape and red wine consumption. White and green grapes do not seem to exhibit the health protection properties, to the same degree as do red

and purple grapes.

I’m afraid that the only benefit of bacon in this salad is that it tastes so great and adds such a nice complementary flavour. Fortunately, we will be eating red grapes with the bacon to deal with the saturated fat and broccoli to detox the nitrates, so it really is a wellplanned recipe. The olive oil in the mayonnaise is also an antioxidant. The oleic acid, (omega 9) in olive oil prevents the newly produced and existing LDL cholesterol from being oxidized. Olive oil helps prevent belly fat and improves cell communication in insulin resistance. Olive oil is heart healthy and anti-inflammatory at the cellular level.

This salad also calls for nuts. Walnuts are a source of omega 3’s and antioxidants.

Almonds help reduce your LDL cholesterol and raise your HDL(which my doctor explains to me as ”good cholesterol”). The onion adds additional benefits such as helping to balance blood sugar by providing chromium and quercetin. It is so amazing that such a simple salad can be so full

Ty p i c a l l y, a community will have one to three schools depending on its size. A century ago though, schools literally dotted the landscape w i t h o n e s c h o o l s er v i n g t h e ar e a around it for a few kilometres. An area that is now served by one large school could have once been served by five to 10 smaller schools back in the early 1900s.

Today, I am looking at Beulah School, which is unique in the time it formed and how long it operated. The district itself was formed in March of 1922 with W.J. Butterfield and Reverend Ketcheson serving on the board. The name, which is quite unique, comes from the Land of Beulah, found in the bible and Bunjan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, where the name means ‘the land heavenly joy where the pilgrims tarry till they are summoned to enter the Celestial City.’

Interestingly, the school would come much later than the formation of the school district. Usually, a school district is formed a year or t wo before the school is built. As for Beulah School, the district was formed in 1922 but the school itself would not appear for 14 years, in 1936. The school population for the district was small and remained that way for some time. As a result, the ratepayers decided to postpone building a school until the number of school-aged children in the district m ad e i t s o m e t h i n g t h at wo u l d b e financially-viable. Until the school was built, students attending the schools at Lavada, Myrtle Hill and Kitscoty. Some students who lived the Beulah School District got their entire schooling from a school outside the district.

Once the school was built in 1936, Wray Blair would take on the role of janitor and would remain so through the entire existence of the school. The school was built by George Gerrits, with Ted Sheppard serving as a helper and both were paid without having to

borrow money because the ratepayers had saved for 14 years.

Don Green would be the first teacher at the school, followed by Lila Browne from 1937 to 1938, Kathleen Gordon the following year, Dorothy Peden and Edene Fenton from 1939 to 1940 and finally Janet Mackenzie.

In 1938, the school had seven children, so it was never very large but the school was still used for social events such as picnics, Christmas concerts and more. Sunday School was also held at the school.

In 1939, the school became par t of the Vermilion School District. Two years later, due to it being five kilometres from Kitscoty and the small enrolment, the school was closed. Not only was this school one of the last oneroom schools opened in the area, it was also one of the first to close. The school was moved to Kitscoty to serve as an elementary school and then it was moved to Marwayne where it became a teacherage.

Vermilion RCMP Execute Search Warrant And Recover Guns, Drugs And Stolen Property

Vermilion AB, On July 30, 2020 a local business reported a break and enter overnight. The initial investigation immediately identified three suspects. On July 31, 2020 a search warrant was granted for the shared residence of the three suspects.

The execution of this warrant resulted in the recovery of items stolen in the July 30 break and enter as well as items stolen from another commercial break and enter on July 28. This investigation resulted in seizure of several firearms, two of which ADthe OR ALIVE were prohibited firearms due to being modified, multiple illegal drugs and a small amount of commercial explosive devices.

The muc h -antic ipated Vermilion Rotary Club Garage Sale was changed to an online auction this year.

The Rotary Club typically holds an annual garage sale in April, but due to COVID-19, they were unable to. Despite being unable to host a garage sale, the Rotary Club had a surplus of donated furniture, many of which came from families with seniors moving into the lodge.

“It does us good to assist families in life-changing situations,” said Rotarian Brenda Lee. “So, we said, ‘sure!’”.

In the beginning, the Rotary Club was unsure of how to go about the garage sale but wanted to host it before college students had already furnished their apartments. As well, the Rotary Club wanted to ensure they did the garage sale before the busy harvest season.

The club considered hosting a physical garage sale with enforced COVID-19 precautions but decided against it.

risky for our community and volunteers,” expplained Lee. The Rotary Club was offered an RV shop for storage and facilitation of the online furniture sale by Webb’s Machinery, which Lee expressed much gratitude towards.

Lee expresses regret as she and numerous community members miss the interaction at the physical Rotary Club Garage Sale.

“It lost that little bit of personal feel to it,” comments Lee. Though the visual af firmation of community support was absent from the online setting, the online auction was quite a success, with only a few remaining items. According to Lee, the Rotary Club Garage Sale is the Rotary fundraiser with the most community support and generosity. Funds raised from the garage sale are crucial to how much the

Rotary Club contributes to the community, such as the recently completed $100,000 lodge modernisation project.

Funds from the online auction will likely contribute the Rotary’s soon-coming commitment with the Ice Plant.

What Makes Soil Healthy?

Soil health has been defined as “the continued capacity of soil to function as a vital living system, within ecosystem and land-use boundaries, to sustain biological productivity, maintain the quality of air and water environments, and promote plant, animal, and human health�. The challenge with this poetic definition is that, while it does describe the functional abilities of soil, it does not provide quantifiable values or measurements. There are no metrics to determine what makes soil healthy or to help identify the current soil health status (i.e. is it healthy or does it still need work?).

Although most producers can agree that soil health is impor tant, actual measurable values of what makes soil “healthy� will vary from farm to farm.

Numerous research projects across the globe are working on gaining a better understanding of soil health and what that means for individual operations but have yet to come up with specific, global parameters other than the definition provided in 1996. This challenge makes sense – consider Canada for instance.

Values for pH, salinity, water infiltration, and organic matter vary significantly across the country and what is considered “good� in one area may not be considered valuable in another region.

Although the actual numbers and targets may be different on any given operation there are five principles of soil health that can help protect soils and maintain forage and feed productivity.

Keep the soil covered: bare soil heats up and dries out faster and is more likely to erode. Living plants and biomass can provide cover.

Reduce mechanical disturbance:

disturbances such as overgrazing or tillage can result in undesirable changes to microbial and plant communities.

Grow a living root all year: having a living root in the soil helps feed soil microbes and prevent erosion.

Increase plant diversity: by growing a variety of different plants you provide feed for multiple different soil microbes.

This also provides different rooting depths to help create soil aggregates,

Although this research is still ongoing there are many management strategies that can be implemented on farm to protect and improve soil quality, it is worthwhile for producers to examine the soil on their operation and to develop their own soil health goals that are specific to their needs.

The County of Vermilion River will be reopening its facilities to in-person public access Wednesday, August 5, 2020.

“We are working hard to put a plan to

reopen County facilities. We are carefully planning how to best implement protocols that will protect the health and safety of the public and staff and limit the spread of COVID-19,” said Harold Northcott, Chief Administrative Officer for the County of Vermilion River.

Clubroot manages to spread in CVR. The single most important disease strategy is crop rotation (at least 2 years between canola crops), followed by using clubroot resistant varieties. The Canola Council of Canada recommends seeding grass at canola field entry points to provide a non-host area for soil to drop off equipment. CVR Ag Team and ALUS Vermilion River will work with farmers to proactively manage clubroot and to encourage grassing field approaches.

Soggy Weather Forces Ag Disaster Declarations

Living and working the agricultural lifestyle is a passion for many of Albertans, however it is like playing a crapshoot each growing season and this year has been a disaster for many.

According to Agroclimate National Risk Report dated July 21 to August 5 seven rural municipalities in Alberta have declared a state of agricultural disaster due to excessive moisture. For many of these municipalities, it is the second or third year in a row of declaring an agricultural disaster.

On June 9, the County of Athabasca declared an agricultural disaster.

June 10, Thorhild County Council unanimously declared a State of Agricultural disaster, and their site said that council will be lobbying the Minister of Agriculture, Devin Dreeshen to establish a disaster recovery program for 2020.

On June 11, Lamont County announced on their website that during a special meeting of Council a State of Agricultural Disaster was declared for Lamont County. The report also stated “The significant rainfall received has resulted in severe overland flooding and wet fields. Many farmers have been unable to finish seeding due to extremely wet conditions, and it is anticipated that large amounts of acres will

June 12, Lac La Biche County during a special council meeting declared a State of Agricultural disaster due to the excessive precipitation. The release on the counties website states that between June 1 and 10 it received 127 mm of rainfall, which is approximately 450 per cent higher than the long-term average, which has led to flooding, road washouts, and load limits being imposed. In addition, normal farming activities, such as seeding and herbicide applications, have been interrupted.

July 8, the M.D. Of Smoky River declared a state of Agricultural disaster during its regular council meeting.

July 23, Leduc County held a special council meeting and also declared a state of Agricultural Disaster due to excessive moisture and weather conditions that have adversely impacted their local producers.

The announcement on their website

cites, “From May 1 to July 9, precipitation recorded at four weather stations within Leduc county indicated at least 100 mm more rain than the long-term average for that time period. It also stated that, “As of July 9, approximately 65 per cent of barley crops, 50 per cent of canola crops and 35 per cent of wheat crops were estimated to be in poor condition in Leduc County. Poor crop conditions are defined as fields with less than 60 per cent of healthy plants.

Mayor Tanni Doblanko was quoted as saying “The amount of precipitation we received in May alone is more than double the long-term average, and parts of our county have broken a 55-year record for spring precipitation. This has lead to more than 220 quarter sections not being seeded and many crops in distress.”

As you can see grain farming can be a stressful business and while it appears that our area has so far been lucky enough to not be affected greatly by this weird, wonky and unpredictable weather. Thank a farmer for all that they do and the unquestionable sacrifices they make each year.

Open Letter From Conservatives To Agriculture Minister

Submitted July 29, 2020 Ottawa, ON – Today, John Barlow, Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Agri-Food, and Richard Lehoux, Associate Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Agri-Food, sent the below letter calling on the Trudeau government to take urgent action to support Canada’s agriculture sector.

Dear Minister Bibeau: When your government made an announcement to support Canada’s farmers, food businesses, and food supply on May 5, 2020, the Prime Minister stated that “ this is an initial investment and if we nee d to ad d more, we will.” We hope that it has now become clear that more is needed immediately and that some of the announced programs are not meeting the needs of farmers and food processors during these difficult times.

At yo u r a p p e a r a n c e b e f o r e t h e Standing Commit tee of Agriculture and Agri-Food on June 10, 2020, and in comments attributed to you in the media, you alluded to the fact farmers had to draw down their AgriInvest accounts before you would consider providing more support to producers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We’d like to point out no other group of people or sector of the Canadian economy has been asked to go to such lengths during this pandemic before receiving adequate assistance from your government, only farmers.

Additionally, it’s been revealed by your own department that most AgriInvest accounts have less than $10,000 a n d m o r e t h a n 10 , 0 0 0 a c c o u n t s have a balance of zero. Grain Growers of Canada Chair, Jef f Nielsen, rightly described the situation as your government asking more than 73,000

farmers to draw down on money they don’t have and that will hardly make a difference in any size of farming operation. We implore you to not predicate further support for the agriculture sector on arbitrary AgriInvest account balances.

Another matter of concern for farmer s is their inabilit y to ac cess the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) due to the use of personal ac c ount s on family far ms an d the lack of qualifying expenses under the program. Recent changes to the CEBA were encouraging, however, we ask that further improvements be made to the eligibility criteria to ensure that all farm businesses have access to the program.

L astly, the Emergency Pro cessing Fund was something agri-food processors saw as vital to aid in their r e s p o n s e t o C OVI D -19. H oweve r,

access to those funds is still months away and processors continue to face immediate and unprecedented challenges. Increased costs including PPE and other uncertainties such as access to labour are jeopardizing the industry’s long-term viability. To ensure our food supply chain is unbroken, it is imperative you continue to work with agri-food processors to identify and address their concerns and ensure they remain competitive as our country emerges from this pandemic.

5 Common Soil Problems And Their Solutions

Soil is one of the most impor tant factors in determining the quality of your crops. Here are five common soil problems and their solutions to help you get the most out of your fields this year.

Soil is too wet. Low-lying areas or places with a lot of clay in the soil of ten have p o or drainag e and to o mu c h moisture in the ground. For better drainage, mix substances like sand, pea gravel or compost with the earth to increase the amount of space

b e t w e e n s o i l p a r t i c l e s . H o w eve r, avoid adding sand to clay soils as this mixture can settle like concrete.

Soil is too dry. If your soil is too dry or sandy, adding mature compost can help with improving water retention as well as nutrient content. You should also make sure to use mulch around crops to prevent water evaporation from the soil.

Soil is too alkaline. If a soil test shows that your soil’s pH is too high, you’ll need to add elemental sulphur

or sulphuric acid supplements to increase the acidity of the soil. Highly alkaline soils are especially common in arid climates.

Soil is too acidic. The most common remedy for soils that are too acidic is to add lime to them. The amount of lime needed will depend on the soil type and pH. Wood ash can also be used in smaller quantities.

Soil has high salinity. If you live in a coastal region or in an arid climate, yo u m ay n o t i c e w h i t e s a l t c r u s t s

forming on the ground — a sign that the soil contains too much salt. To decrease salinity, you can try adding gypsum and elemental sulphur as well as improving the drainage by adding compost, sand or gravel.

Keep in mind that even if you have high-quality soil, the fer tilizers and composts that you choose can make a big difference to the quality of your crops. Make sure to do a soil test to find out what types are best for your farm.

Webb’s Location Awareness

This spring, Webb’s Machinery took hold of three new locations in Wainwright, St. Paul, and Consort due to the absorption of Tri-Ag Implements.

To raise awareness for this recent expansion, Webb’s is touring a ’49 Mercury and Mustang to their now six

locations. Originally, Mike Webb hoped to have the vehicles featured in the Vermilion Parade, but due to COVID19 and the cancellation of the parade, Webb’s had to opt to tour the vehicles to various Webb’s locations.

The Mercury echoes the beginning of Webb’s. They began selling Mercury models in 1946 and were able to obtain a ’49 Mercury from a loyal customer.

The Mercury/Mustang duo marks “the old and the new”, as explained by Mike Webb. Webb’s worked with Decals and Sign Obsessions to create the designs on the New Holland-yellow Mustang, which has signs of Webb’s six locations.

Webb states that the vehicles have seen a few locations and will hopefully be toured to more on Webb’s Mustang. rotation in the fall.

Alberta Donkey And Mule Club Trail Ride Temperatures were in the high 20’s and low 30’s. If we felt too hot, the course was altered to ride in the trees. Upon cooling down, back to the higher trails in the sun.

Franklin Wolters wrote a book, “Memories of Life on The Grizzly Bear Trail.”

Excerpts were retold from his research and experience. The naming comes from the year of 1757 when Anthony Henday was procuring the Fur Trade market on behalf of the Hudson Bay Company. The exploration party was camped in this area. Two Cree Guides were mauled by a Plains Grizzly Bear. Unfortunately, only one man survived. Other events were referenced from Wolters’ book through the weekend, adding to the experience of this beautiful and historical area.

On Saturday after the ride, feeling tired and lazy, the group ranging in age from 2 to 70, were divided into two groups.

The men who were ambitious enough against the women, in a good ol’ Tug-ofWar! Age and athleticism was revealed. Only two sore arms, four sore backs and a cranked elbow - as the women easily drug the poorly conditioned men over the line!

Members and guests began arriving Friday afternoon for the August Long Weekend Trail Ride at Crosshair Springs overlooking the Battle River Valley and Grizzly Bear Coulee. (more pictures can be viewed on their website Crosshairprings.com and the Alberta Donkey and Mule Club Facebook page).

This hidden gem on the Alberta Prairie is located about 15 miles north of Wainwright, Alberta. First time visitors were apprehensive as to what the prairies could offer for a “riding experience?” Returnees were enthusiastic about taking on the colourful sites, wildlife, and riding out on more new trails, meandering through the 1600 acres of slopes, trees, and wash outs, along the Battle River.

I believe Travel Alberta has a slogan along the lines of “View your own back yard!”

Well, we did! Picture this in your mind, you are driving along the pavement and turn north at the designated sign. The only unpaved road, is the last 5 miles. There is a slight drop, the trees become thicker, then a slight slope for a couple miles and you arrive at the camp plateau surrounded by dense native trees. Poplar, Saskatoon, Chokecherry, Chokeberry and High Bush Cranberry (by the way, the September – October colours are vivid!) You overlook a ledge to the west that drops of 400 feet within 100 yards. To the north – winding trails of just under a mile, that take you down to the Battle River, located 600 feet lower.

Euphoria …. for the ardent Trailer Rider and even to the novice!

Today’s apps on smart phones provide the tracking, elevation, wind, and temperature. But it does not reveal the insect populations. We were surrounded by dragon flies the entire weekend, which provided for a mosquito free holiday! Mule Team and wagon.

After that wake up call. On to the Obstacle Course. Thirteeen items based on a scoring of 1 point for proper execution, 2 points for a maximum of two refusals but still accomplishing and 3 points for not completing the obstacle. Lowest Point Total, wins. After the tortuous teasing and lessons in horsewomanship, the three gals went to the prize table and took all the Ribstone Brewery product, leaving the rest, to beg for refreshments.

The following day, after completing the morning ride, we stopped at the home of seven, of the cutest little mule babies one could ever imagine. Krista and Logan

Hunter allowed us to mingle with the completely relaxed mares and foals. Oh My, calm and friendly!

The Hunters’ provided unlimited ice through the weekend and a moose BBQ on Saturday eve. Hospitality like your grandparents used to tell you about!

This is the third time that the club has gone out to Crosshair Springs and it once again, was An Experience!

The 2020 August Long Weekend Trail Ride provided laughter, Excellent Trail Riding, great scenery, terrific weather, some different entertainment, a little history and New Friends!

Climb Thru Time Museum

Paradise Valley was given the name willow trees in the community. from Friday–Sunday between 12 to 5 because of the rolling prairie, poplar and Visitors can check out the museum p.m. and guided tours are also available.

The Climb Thru Time Museum is open for all to view the many settings. It is a renovated Grain Elevator in Paradise Valley located 50 km southwest of Lloydminster or 50 km northeast of Wainwright.

It officially opened on July 24, 1995 and has a Tea and Dessert room but due to COVID-19 this part is closed, but the gift shop is still open.

As you climb thru time the displays include just about anything you can think of from previous days gone by.

Some of the many displays are artifacts and art depicting the start of agriculture in the area, for example there are nature displays, farm equipment, farm replicas, cattle displays, pig, chickens, horse racing, a hat display, sports, school rooms and even a sod house and much more.

There is a separate building to tour which was the train station, having the last grain car loaded in 1987.

Paradise Valley had a few tornadoes come through the area which destroyed a few of their grain elevators.
