The hot days of summer are the best time to make no bake desserts.No one wants to turn on the oven and heat up the house. This is an easy and popular dessert. It is very versatile because it can have a variety of toppings. It can be as simple as opening a can of premade pie filling such as cherry, blueberry or saskatoon. I usually only used a half a can of the blueberry or saskatoon pie filling. You could also use the rhubarb compote from last weeks Rhubarb Fool recipe as a topping.

If you don’t have a can of pie filling, you can cook a topping using fresh or frozen berries, a bit of sugar and a little cornstarch to thicken. Be sure to allow it to cool before adding it on

For chocolate lovers, you can fold 3/4 cup of semi sweet chocolate chips into the cream cheese mix ture before chilling and drizzle the top with chocolate sauce or melted chocolate. It can also be topped with fresh sliced strawberries, raspberries, kiwi, bananas, peaches or blueberries and a dollop of whipped cream. This recipe is a family favorite that is quick and easy to make. Its light texture complements the delicate and creamy flavor and adds the finishing touch to make any meal special. This recipe makes 9 – 12 servings.

No Bake Cheese Cake Crust 1 cup graham wafer crumbs 1/4 cup butter melted Filling 1 - 250 gram block of cream cheese 1/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla

1 teaspoon lemon juice 1/4 cup sour cream 1 cup whipping cream 1 tablespoon sugar Bring the cream cheese to room temperature. For the crust Combine the graham wafer crumbs with the melted butter and press into the bottom of an 8” x 8” cake pan, and chill. With an electric beater whip the cream cheese, 1/4 cup sugar, lemon juice, sour cream and vanilla. Whip in

the 1 tablespoon of sugar and whipping cream until stiff. Fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture.

Pour the mixture into the cake pan over the graham wafer crust, and refrigerate until set. This no bake cheese cake can be finished with a variety of toppings such as spreading a can of cherr y or half a can of blueberr y or saskatoon pie filling on top.

W h e n we t h i n k of the Klu Klux K lan, it is g enerally seen as something that existed in the American South and Canada never had a brush with it. In actuality, Canada had a large Klu Klux Klan presence in the 1920s, especially in Alberta and Saskatchewan. In fact, in Saskatchewan the Klan was able to influence the provincial election and get something sympathetic to them elected.

The Klan in Canada wasn’t so much about focusing on Black Canadians, but rather Eastern Europeans who were arriving in large numbers through immigration at that point.

In one editorial published in Vegreville, it was stated “The business of bringing in certain classes of settlers and giving them land in solid block, forming impermeable blocs of non-Canadian citizens is the finest method in the world of creating dissension in the long run.

Keep them out. Let them hunt some other country where they can get away with their ridiculous ideas as to religion and to their responsibility as citizens.”

In Alberta, the Klan was restored in 1923 through John Maloney, who had helped set up the Klan in Saskatchewan.

One sad aspect of the KKK in the area and in Alberta is that Alberta was the only province to actually grant a formal charter to the Klu Klux Klan.

By the 1930s, with The Great Depression, the Klu Klux Klan would slowly see its influence disappear in Canada.

In addition, Maloney had been stealing funds from the Alberta chapter and was convicted of stealing legal documents on Jan. 25, 1933 from the office of a lawyer who opposed the Klan. On Feb. 3 of that year, he was convicted of insurance fraud. While the Klan would have 46,500 members in Saskatchewan, it was much smaller in Alberta but still present briefly.

On July 22, the Lea Park truck draw was held.

This year would have been the 66th R o d e o, b u t d u e to C OVID -19, t h e rodeo was cancelled this year. Tickets for the draw were sold in a 50 mile radius, with proceeds of the truck draw going towards the upkeep of the facilities at Lea Park.

“We feel gratified that the surrounding community supports us so well,”

stated Rick Hozack, treasurer of the Marwayne Agricultural Society.

The winner was Rhonda Berg of Marwayne, whose late husband Chuck was greatly involved in the Lea Park Rodeo for 27 years, which is coincidentally the number of years Lea Park has held the truck draw.

The members of Lea Park rodeo would like to thank all the people who made the draw possible and a special thank you to all those who went above and beyond selling tickets.

COVID-19 And Your Farm This Summer

Routine jobs now need a bit more preparation to prevent any potential spread of the virus to workers, visitors and family members.

“As Alberta farms go into the summer work season, there is little doubt that practices and procedures have changed to adjust for the ongoing threat of COVID-19,” says Kenda Lubeck, farm safety coordinator with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

“Farms are encouraged to outline an exposure control plan for COVID-19.”

This plan should identify the specific health hazards on the farm and outlining responsibilities and risks associated with the operation. Implementing specific controls based on risk assessments will help each farm reduce its risk of COVID19. Basic controls include: Engineering controls such as barriers and partitions or increased ventilation.

Administrative controls that change the way workers, volunteers and family members interact. They should include policies for physical distancing, limiting hours of operations, respiratory etiquette and hand washing procedures Personal protective equipment (PPE) is generally only necessary when hazards related to COVID-19 cannot be completely eliminated by administrative and engineer-

ing controls. PPE controls the hazard at the worker, volunteer or family member level. Examples of PPE include gloves, eye protection, face protections and masks.

“It is important to note,” Lubeck adds, “that cloth face coverings are not considered an adequate PPE substitution for a respirator. If your farm task requires a respirator or a dust mask, make sure you are using the proper PPE for the situation.”

Cloth face coverings work to protect other people, not the wearer. These masks should be the last line of defense against coronavirus. However, they can help prevent the spread of COVID-19 when workers are required to do tasks close to each other.

Visitors and new workers During the pandemic, farm visitors need to be safe from expected hazards like moving machinery, as well as exposure to the coronavirus. Follow the recommendations of Alberta Health Services to keep everyone safe and healthy. Develop and follow a visitor orientation covering all hazards, including COVID-19.

“This will help vulnerable workers, volunteers and family members avoid dangerous mistakes and learn new skills.”

Tasks and transporting people When it’s impossible to maintain the physical distancing between interconnected roles or close proximity teams – working with animals, equipment maintenance, or riding in vehicles together – farms may consider these options: Assign people who already co-mingle as a ‘family group that lives together’ to those interconnected roles or close proximity teams.

together, rather than travel with others from another family unit. Limit the number of people travelling in one vehicle. Disinfect surfaces often. Keep as much space between people as possible, cover any coughs or sneezes, and if anyone is feeling unwell they should stay home. Create a transportation plan, train your workers and keep everyone safe.

Tracing exposure “As a farmer and employer, it’s up to you to make sure your employees, visitors and family members stay safe and healthy,” notes Lubeck, “Now with COVID-19, it is as important as ever.”

“Keep track of everyone that employees come into contact with during the busy season on the farm. That way if someone does become sick, the process of keeping the virus contained is simpler for health officials and farm managers. Create an exposure control plan and follow it.”

All Albertans can download and use the ABTraceTogether mobile contact tracing app on their smartphones to reduce risk of exposure and as added security to any plan.

While farmers and ranchers have many jobs and tasks outdoors, which reduces the risk of COVID-19 exposure, the risks of spreading the virus are very real in all work situations. The only way to control this disease is to be prepared.

To ensure a level playing field, we asked the government to make three simple changes to their amendments to the LAEA: Keep big money from manipulating local elections by setting contribution limits that are achievable and realistic for grassroots supporters.

Allow municipalities to continue setting bylaws for candidates to disclose their full donor list and the amounts contributed before the municipal election date in 2021.

Make third-party advertising accountable by outlining clear declarations of contributors and by limiting the contribution amounts.

The provincial government has outright rejected our first two requests and deferred a decision on the third item until a later date. Without these changes, there is now the strong potential to introduce big money and partisan politics to influence the upcoming 2021 municipal elections.

On numerous occasions, we met and

communicated with Minister Madu, and the Ministry of Municipal Affairs in an effort to help them understand the importance of our feedback, since legislative amendments must preserve the local, non-partisan, democratic processes that Albertans expect.

In the Municipal Affairs 2018-19 annual report, Minister Madu is quoted as saying, “Alberta’s success lies in the prosperity of its many vibrant municipalities. To fuel that prosperity, municipalities need a positive partnership with the provincial government and long-range planning to meet their community priorities.”

We consider the Ministry of Municipal Affairs’ role to include advancing and championing municipalities’ best interests. AUMA originally provided support to the provincial government’s announcement about changes to Bill 29 because we were assured by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs that they were willing to consider reasonable amendments to make local democracy more accountable. Better consultation is needed.

A real commitment by Municipal Affairs to collaborate with AUMA and its membership is the only way forward to rebuild the prosperity of our communities and our province.

At this point, from the teachers’ perspective, and we believe for most families too, it is evident that the current conditions are unsustainable, and rushing back to preCOVID methods of face-to-face instruction simply may not be an option until there is a vaccine.

So, under these circumstances, we need to look at rethinking what constitutes a school building. Physical distancing is with us for months to come, and knowing that distance learning is not quality learning, or equitable learning, it is time to consider looking at other spaces available in our communities where quality education can occur in-person, safely. Offices, arenas, and university campuses may all be empty or underutilized after Labour Day weekend, making them the perfect alternatives to holding reduced class-sizes. And, when the weather permits - outdoor classrooms are good options too.

At the same time, we need to address the mental health and well-being of many students, and teachers too. National stan-

dards for access to mental health services will need to take into account that this pandemic is causing significant and not yet fully understood impacts on psychological health. This is why more, not fewer, teachers and education support personnel, including trained counsellors, are going to be needed when school gets back underway. A significant focus of teaching for this next while will need to be rooted in trauma informed practice, so additional supports for teachers and education support personnel to effectively address how the COVID19 crisis has affected students’ behaviour and mental health will be needed.

Until our children and youth get back to learning together, we must ensure that those who need breakfasts receive them, that those who face difficult situations at home have a safe outlet and adults they can confide in, and that all students have the same opportunity to learn. This is why moving on from distance learning, something that should only be deemed a temporary solution, is so important. Also, getting children back learning together means that parents and guardians who are able to work can do so without the constant stress about the learning needs and well-being of their children, or the stress that comes with having to work and support remote learning day in and day out.

This is why publicly funded public education matters, and these are just some of the ideas and insights that teachers can share with governments to ensure that our youngest, our most vulnerable, and most importantly, our future leaders are able to continue the quality education they need.

Governments at all levels simply need to consult and work with us to make these ideas a reality.

When the dog days of summer begin to fade into fall, I hope that governments and teachers can stand together knowing that shared expertise will have made a return to school possible for all students and something for them to look forward to as we navigate our way through a crisis that is far from over.

Lloydminster RCMP Charge Four After Flight From Police

Lloydminster, Alta – In the early morning hours of July 17, 2020 Lloydminster RCMP attempted to stop a vehicle in the north side of the city. During the traffic stop, the vehicle occupants began throwing objects towards the police car in a vain effort to evade apprehension. When that was not successful, one of the occupants produced a long barrel firearm, and fired a single round towards the police car. Nobody was injured, and the vehicle was stopped using a tire deflation device.
