Harry and Alva Creech moved to Vermilion in 1997. In 2001 they created Crossroads Funeral Chapel with local partners Morley Marshall and Henry Wasylik and later became sole owners of Crossroads Funeral Chapel in 2008. They built Vermilion’s only Crematorium service Creech’s Crematorium Ltd. at 3821 - 48 Ave in 2009 which services Vermilion and many surrounding areas.

Harry and Alva Creech are excited to announce that they have purchased Lakeland Funeral Home from the Caring Group as of July 1, 2020, making it a locally owned funeral home for the first time in 26 years!

Lakeland Funeral Home was established in 1989 by Trevor Clark and Roger Erickson. It was sold to the Alderwoods

Group Canada Inc. of Toronto in 1994 and remained in their possession until 2008 when The Caring Group Corp. of Lethbridge purchased it. From 1994 to the present it has been managed by several different managers.

Harry and Alva Creech want to assure all those with pre need contracts with Lakeland Funeral Home that they will be honoring them.

“We hope that as many of the Lakeland employees as possible will join our staff as we continue serving the families of Vermilion and surrounding areas. Crossroads will be moving to the Lakeland Funeral Home location while renovations are being made to our building downtown. Family Fun Fridays With VIBE

Reporter

On July 3, VIBE hosted a “Walk n’ Talk” at the Town Walking Trail across from the Lakeland Mall.

Signs were set up along the walking trail with questions relating to mental health, wellness, communication and more. As well, VIBE prepared “grab and go” play bags with activities and goodies for all ages. Participants were encouraged to reflect, communicate, and empathize with one another while following social distancing measures, unless from the same household.

VIBE is hosting numerous “Walk n’ Talk” events in Vermilion and surrounding areas as part of their Family Fun Fridays in July and August.

Tara Louise Dawson (deVlaming) July 18, 1969 – May 8, 2020

On May 8, 2020 Tara Dawson passed away in Dublin, Ireland after a courageous and dignified three year battle with cancer with her Husband, Mark Heffernan and her Mother Marjorie deVlaming by her side. She will be forever loved and sadly missed by her family and friends in Ireland and Canada.

Tara graduated from JR Robson in 1987 and the University of Alberta in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After graduation she worked at the U. of A. Hospital and then accepted a position at Stanton Hospital in Yellowknife, N.W.T. She was the Nurse at the Colmac Gold Mine before taking a position in the OR at the Hospital in Bermuda. In 2000 she moved to Dublin, Ireland and took a position in the OR at the Mater Public Hospital. She was head hunted over the years and was Theatre Manager at Cappagh Hospital for 12 years.

Tara loved to travel and went to Nairobi, Kenya with Operation Smile. She climbed Mt. Kilamjaro in Tanzania and toured the pyramids in Egypt. She toured extensively in Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, USA, Mexico and Canada.

Tara lived a very interesting and fulfilling life and will be forever loved and dearly missed by her Husband, Mother, Relatives and friends and work colleagues on both sides of the Ocean.

Living on the prairies, I have always enjoyed the beautiful wild roses that bloom in early summer. Their lovely scent is amazing. I have noticed that the majority of them are a soft pink, white others are a brighter pink and some are almost white. Did you know that rose petals are edible? As you walk along the road side, in the pasture or up at the lake, you can reach for a delicate petal, blow off any tiny insects and enjoy its mild floral flavour and silky texture. While roses are edible, never eat the rose petals from roses from a florist or grocery store. Only eat ones that you know come from sources that are free from all pesticides and sprays. Roses are from

the Rosacea family, which includes almonds apples, apricots, plums, cherries, peaches and apricots, so if you are allergic to any of them then proceed with caution eating roses.

When picking the rose petals, give the flower a gentle shake to remove any bugs that are visiting. You will want to clean and check them again when you are done picking. I sat out on the patio, and while I was giving the petals their final clean, a honey bee buzzed over, and checked out the petals, and quickly left.

Rose petals have been consumed for thousands of years. Rose petal contain vitamins A, B, C , E antioxidants and flavonoids. The main source of antioxidants in rose petals are poly phenols.

Rose petals and rose water have been consumed for centuries. In fact, rose flavour is what gives a Big Turk choc-

olate bar it’s unique Turkish delight flavour. You can make rose tea out of the fresh or dried petals, and it is found to be very relaxing and to help reduce the feelings of stress.

This recipe is for using wild rose petals, you can use the petals from the rugosa rose. The rugosa rose is an old heirloom plant that is sturdy enough to survive the harsh prairie winters. They are highly fragrant and smell divine.

When using other types of roses, it is good to know that the white part at the base of a rose is slightly bitter, so it is better cut off, but you do not need to worry about this bitterness with wild roses. You can decorate cakes with fresh rose petals, and rose petals will keep refrigerated for several days.

Wild Rose Petal Jam 2 cups lightly packed rose petals 2 cups sugar divided

2 cups water 4 teaspoons powdered pectin 4 teaspoons lemon juice Put your cleaned rose petals in a bowl and add 1 cup of sugar, using your freshly washed and clean hands work the sugar into the petals, bruising the petals, and allow to set for 30 minutes to 1 hour for the aromatic rose compounds to go into the sugar. Mix 1/4 cup sugar with pectin, this prevents the pectin from clumping when added to the mixture. In a heavy bottomed pot bring to a boil the 2 cups of water, and 3/4 cup sugar. Add in the rose petals and sugar mixture and continue boiling covered for 10 minutes.

Add the sugar pectin mixture and the lemon juice and gently boil uncovered for 30 minutes. Pour into hot sterilized jars and cap with sterilized 2-piece regular canning lids. Allow to thoroughly cool. This recipe makes 2 precious jars.

In Search Of John Anderson

I was given a request to find information about a man by the name of John Anderson who had come through the area driving cattle for a time. I love looking for information on someone, which can be a lot of fun, but also can be quite a lot of work with a common name such as this.

While this search didn’t pan out as well as I hoped, I would love to discover the stories of the people from your past, so feel free to e-mail me at craig@canadaehx. com and I will look at doing a column on them. Maybe even do a podcast episode if that person has had a fascinating life.

I thought that it would be interesting to look at the search itself, rather than the story that remains elusive, and highlight the men who may, or may not, have been the elusive John Anderson.

Nonetheless, going through some history books, these are the instances I found that mentioned a man by the name John Anderson.

The first time I came across the name was with a John Anderson serving on the board of the Park Valley School. The name comes up again but much later in the 1960s with a John Anderson who served on the County School Committee from 1966 to 1972. That same John Anderson served as a councilor for Vermilion River from 1954 to 1963, so he was someone very interested in local politics.

The name John Anderson pops up again with that same Anderson who was serving in local politics. He would be on hand to cut the ribbon on the Heinsburg Bridge, which was officially opened on Oct. 9, 1963. This bridge would help to connect various homesteads that sat across the river from each other for half a century.

I then went over to Ancestry.ca and began going through the John Andersons from the area who I could find but sadly, none of them panned out or revealed the story of a man taking cattle across Alberta on an epic journey.

I wish I could have found this unique story, and I will keep looking but a lot of the fun with history, especially local history, are the stories you discover along the way.

As I researched John Anderson, I began to learn more of the Andersons in the area. They were families who helped to settle the land and bring many of the first children, machinery and commerce to the area. Henry Anderson for example, was the first to travel to Tyrol, which is now Lindbergh. He also served as the ferryman over the Vermilion River for many years.

Community Member Don Henry Retires

After 38 years, community member Don Henry is retiring from his job at Lakeland College.

Henry spent most of his time (36 years) at the college teaching heavy duty and

automotive mechanics.

“I will miss the students the most, along with my fellow instructors, I will miss the team work,” Henry states, “When you only have eight weeks to finish a programme there is a lot of pressure. It was fun.” He also spent two years in the College’s vehicle maintenance department.

H e nr y ha s b e e n heavily involved in the Cadet program i n Ve r m i l i o n , f o r almost 20 years. He also states that he has received much support from the college in relation to

his involvement with Cadets.

“I was pleased that I was able to work very close with our fire school and the great instructors there, like Bob Fisher,” Henry mentions.

Ham radios are also a great interest to Henry, and he has been involved with the ARRL (American Radio Relay League) and was a part of the ARRL Field Day event on June 27-28.

Henry expresses a fondness of Lakeland College, emphasising its importance to Vermilion.

Submitted I wish to respond to the recent letter to the Editor regarding the Information Gathering Event about Systemic Racism that was recently held in Vermilion.

I was delighted to hear that the writer of this letter had not experienced any personal racism during his time in Vermilion, and had found (as I have) Vermilion to be a warm and hospitable place. I do believe though, that the purpose of this gathering was to point out the presence of “Systemic Racism” Unlike Personal Racism, Systemic Racism is a hidden and pernicious kind of racism that is much harder to see and identify. In a country such as Canada, which celebrates multiculturalism and has a strong Charter of Rights and Freedoms, it is hard to see the quiet racism that exists in our institutions and organizations. This is something we are all struggling to come to terms with. Few of us are overt racists, but many of us engage in systemic racism and don’t even realize it.

Systemic racism is different from individual and personal racism. Personal racism can be seen as an emotion; it reveals itself as a scorn, disgust or hatred towards a certain group of individuals. It appears on signs “**** go home*, **** need not apply*, or jokes *Did you hear the one about Joe the ****?” I am proud to say that this kind of racism is seldom heard in Vermilion.

Systemic Racism is not personal, it is about how our society works. It is woven into our history and culture, It has little to do with each one of us, but we are all affected by it. It has to do with the way our world is set up, and we are seldom aware of it. Indian Residential Schools are a prime example of Systemic Racism, as is the ongoing treatment of our Indigenous people.

Individually we have little to do with decisions that are made. For example, I was shocked a few years ago to discover that Kewehin Reserve only broke ground on a water treatment plant in 2018.

Personally, I deplore the fact that Black Canadians are 2X more likely than White Canadians to be poor, their average income is 25% lower than that of

white Canadians, and Indigenous Canadians average income is even lower. Finding housing is difficult for these families especially in urban areas. Overcrowding is common and often young people, whose needs for socialization and exercise are high find themselves on the street where they fall prey to criminal elements.

Anti loitering laws bring them to the attention of police and criminalize their natural behaviour, filling our courts and jails with young people whose only real crime is to be poor and coloured. This is systemic racialism. And it is easy for me, a highly educated person of white privilege to ignore, or worse, to condemn.

Much of Systemic Racism remains hidden simply because it is not tracked. Our government (possibly wanting to maintain the myth of “colour blindness”) has chosen to not record colour based data in Canada, but we do know that people of colour make up the majority of those in jail, those living in poverty, those with health issues resulting from poor nutrition, and it would appear victims of COVID 19. A recent study showed that if you are Indigenous you may receive less pain medication when you are in hospital because it is understood that “Indigenous people have a higher pain tolerance that whites”. Personally, I have heard it said “Middle Eastern women get easily wound up, they are not really in that much pain, it’s just their culture to wail.”

We also know that 36% of police killings in Toronto from 2010-17 were Black. A University of Toronto study revealed that, “Resume whitening” (the practice of altering names so that they appeared “more white”, changing extracurricular activities to reflect “more white interests”, etc,) resulted in black candidates receiving 2.5 more job interviews than those who did not engage in such practices.

Systemic Racism is revealed in our own Parliament. Out of all parliamentarians (443) only 10 are __back; 7 out of 33-8 Members of Parliament and 3 out of 105 Senators.

I am delighted to know that personal racism is largely absent here in our town, but now is the time when we must raise our voices against Systemic Racism. If you are an employer, put that person of colour’s application on the top of the list, if you are a landlord, give that coloured person a break and rent to them first, if you are voting, ask your candidate what they think about Systemic Racism and what they can do about it. If you have already voted, write a letter to your MLA, or MP and ask them the same question. Use your privilege for change.

Vermilion Public Library Reopening

The library re-opens on July 7th with modified hours and service levels until phase 3 is announced by the province.

Regarding the opening date When the province announced that phase 2 was going to be occur earlier than expected we were not ready.

Mu c h like many other fac ilities in Alberta we were given a package on re-opening and conditions we need to meet in order to do so. The decision to not re-open until July was based upon a realistic assessment of how long it would take to complete a hazard assessment, convene with stakeholders, and make a variety of engineering, administrative and procedural changes to comply with provincial guidelines.

New Protocol and Safeguards There are 9 specific changes to protocol detailed on our website but the most impor tant to be aware of, ones which we will be reminding every visitors upon arrival are the following: 1. Children under 12 must be adult accompanied. Families may bring up to 1 child (< 12) per adult (+16).

2. Maintain 2 meters social distance by following directional arrows and distance markers.

3. Because of the high touch nature of libraries, all visitors must sanitize their hands before entry.

4. Pl e a s e l i m i t h a n d l i n g l i b r a r y items. Do not re -shelve items af ter removing them from the shelf.

Why so restrictive on kids?

We have received some feedback from the public discussing why we are being more restrictive on children,

ma ximum occupancy, and sanitizing. The library board considered this issue with great concern, and decided now is not the time for entire families to visit the facility, and that this is a reasonable measure to ensure we are following provincial guidelines. We look forward to phase 3 where we will return to a less restrictive protocol.

Quarantining Books Many libraries across Canada have heard concerns from their patrons about the risk of bringing contaminated library material into their homes. One library even had an issue with patrons microwaving books in an attempt to sanitize them. Vermilion Librar y is taking all precautions recommended

by Alberta Health in quarantining our collection and ensuring it is safe to borrow by our members. Please do not wipe the books with cleaner or other sanitizing chemicals. The best way to sanitize items like books, movies, and audiobooks is time. An item quarantined for 72 hours will have dramatic reduction in the risk of transmission and we do that for every item taken on the shelf to ensure it is safe to borrow.

a flow of changes. You may have feelings of unreality, uncertainness, fearfulness of the future. What are you thinking? These are feelings that may move you toward isolating in your pain. We may choose to isolate, feeling it is a safe place or recently we have experienced an enforced isolation due to the pandemic.

Both isolations have their roots in loss (a fear of the future and how we will cope in the new and uncertain times.)

Are you feeling depressed? Are there more clouds than sunshine in your lives?

Negativity begins to set in and we stuff our emotions. Often we don’t realize we are depressed and don’t recognize the symptoms; negativity, anger, edginess, disconnected, no energy, feeling hopeless, self loathing and can’t see a future, to name some. This is a time to reach out and seek a new path that leads to

Hope. Reach out to find support in a trusted friend, a counsellor or a supportive group.

Coping skills - Do you feel you have any? Don’t let the grief pain become overwhelming. Find a supportive network that can be an anchor for you. Try finding a gratitude for each day (a flower amidst the ashes). Be able to name your emotions and courageously dig into them. That is where healing begins. Try to remember self care. You are worth it.

Spend some time in a “grief break”; take time for a walk, exercise, write, listen to soothing music, draw or paint, read or work in a garden.

Resilience – The ability to return to the place of using strengths learned.

The coping skills you have learned you will use and reuse in your changing life.

(If you receive lemons, be able to make

lemonade). Use self affirmations and share a positive thought with someone.

Gratitude and positivity changes the brain’s functions. You have the ability to move through your grief pain and move forward.

Hope – We end with Hope. Hope as small as a mustard seed, is where we start. Practise it and hope will grow. Hope that each new day will bring healing, new coping skills, resilience, a supportive network that help to move forward one small step at a time, being able to say “I can make it”. Please remember our children, they too experience all the pain and emotion we as adults do and as they experience changes and the pain of their grief they need our support and understanding.

Tax Payment Deadline is September 30, 2020.

Payments to the County can be made via online banking, telephone banking, on the County’s website by OptionPay Credit Card, mailing a cheque/bank draft or using the drop off box at the front door of the County Administration Office.

Roadside Mowing: all work must be completed (hay cut, baled and bales removed) by July 15 to allow for mowing.
