Vermilion does not have an official classic car club, but Thursday evenings at A&W in Vermilion is the place to be if you are a classic car/truck enthusiast.

“Our group meets at the Vermilion

A&W on Thursday evenings when the weather is conducive for that and will socially distance ourselves while admiring other cars and chatting about the hobby. It’s part of Crusin’ the Dub which has been around for a while. Most of us remember the good old days when

you pulled into the local A&W with your favourite buddies or to show off your new girlfriend and sat around in your cars while you got your frosty root beer and a burger delivered to your window. I think this is a throwback to those good times,” said participant Greg Stolz.

Owners from Vermilion (and sometimes surrounding areas) showcase their classic cars which they have proudly purchased and often restored themselves or with the help of professionals.

While out with their classic cars/ trucks owners like to take the opportunity to chat and socialize amongst each other and attendees. “ To p i c s w e f r e q u e n t l y d i s c u s s includes the history of the cars, any unique features, the number of that model built, ability or leads in obtaining parts and other show events. We enjoy making new friends and the general comradery amongst those that show up,” explained Stoltz.

Originally built by Les Kreller in early 1964, the Ponderosa was a staple to Vermilion locals. The restaurant was the perfect hangout for all ages from teenagers to seniors, reportedly having ‘the best mushroom burgers’.

The Ponderosa switched hands only a few times; in 1969, it was sold to the Letawski family, who built and lived in living quarters above the restaurant.

Later, the restaurant was sold to the Mah family, who expanded the restaurant in the 1980’s to accommodate for the volume of customers. The Mah’s bought the restaurant in 1977 and ran it until Don Mah suffered a heart attack, which led Mike Wong to run the restaurant until the land was sold in the late 90’s to a group who planned to build a Hotel and restaurant, which is where A&W and Super 8 stand today.

Lilac blossoms are not only beautiful, but t h ey a r e e d i b l e a s well. They are full of aromatic flavour and s li g ht ly a str in g e nt .

Lilac blossoms contain carotenoids, specifically lutein and zeaxanthin. Lutein and zeaxanthin are the only two carotenoids found in the eyes and are beneficial to help prevent cataracts, and macular degeneration in the eyes. This gives lilac blossoms have a very specific health benefit for our eyes as they are high in those two carotenoids. To get more flowers on your lilac tress be sure to dead head the old flowers.

As a beauty product, you can make a lilac tea steeping the the blossoms in hot water, strain the blossoms out, and

In the spring of 1916, the Vanesti District had reached its quota for schoolaged children and t h e d e c i s i o n wa s made to open a school. The school district itself had been organized in September of 1915 in anticipation of the school being built.

The school would open later that year.

The first teacher at the school would be Vera Purser, who was in charge of eight children on the opening day of the school. A few days later, four children, all from the Parent family, would arrive on horse and buggy from Grizzly Bear Coulee to begin learning at the school.

refrigerate the resulting lilac water. You can then use it as a soothing toner for the face. You can also drink the lilac water.

Lilac blossoms can be used to make lilac wine and lilac ice cream. The blossoms can be added to cakes, cookies, squares, tea scones, pudding and pancakes. You can even make a lilac syrup to put on pancakes and waffles.

You can steep lilac blossoms in hot water for a flavourful cup of herbal tea, served hot of iced with a bit of your favorite sweetener. You can also use the blossoms to infuse flavour to create unique cocktails and mocktails. The blossoms can be coated on frothy egg white and them dipped in sugar and left to dry or crystalized blossoms to decorate cup cakes, and cake. The blossoms can be used uncrystallized for pretty decorating of baked goods. Honey or sugar can be infused with the lilac scent and flavour

simply by adding in the blossoms and allowing some time for the exchange to take place, six weeks for the honey and several hours for the sugar. Lilac blossoms can be added to green salads for prettiness and eye health.

Here is my tested recipe for lilac jelly.

It is interesting to note that even though your lilacs might be purple, the tea will be yellow, and so will be this jam. I added about 10 hascap berries in with the blossoms, and the purple hue of the berries made my jam somewhere in between a gold and oh so pretty pale peach. Some people add a dozen or so blueberries, and I bet you could add saskatoons as well.

Purser had to split everyone into Junior 1 and Senior 1 groups for teaching.

School continued until July and August, where there were two weeks off for the children. At the time, the school did not have any place for the horses, so they were allowed to roam the school yard, feeding on the grass. Most of the students rode the horses bareback, which was not always easy. Getting on the horse was usually done using a fence post, which created its own problems as one former student relates.

“In the early days, fences were far between so if one fell off, or wished to get off, he might have a long walk before he could remount.”

There was also no well at the time, and each child had to bring water from home, which was always a problem on hot days when some children didn’t have

enough water.

During these years, H.R. Parker was the school inspector and would make yearly visits to the school from 1916 until 1936. Both the teacher and students were never happy to see him coming to the school to inspect it, always worried the school would be shut down.

The school wasn’t just about learning of course. It was a place where political meetings were held, card parties, dances, church ser vices and more.

Those meetings were often welcomed by students, as one student relates.

“I remember we were all very happy to have a Mr. Whitson arrive one day to discuss the formation of the Islay Municipal Hospital District. We were pleased because school was out at 2 p.m., although most of us remained to hear the discussion.”

4 tablespoons lemon juice (fresh squeezed or bottled) Put your cleaned lilac blossoms in a bowl and add 1 cup of sugar, using your freshly washed and clean hands work the sugar into the petals, bruising the petals, and allow to set for 30 minutes to 1 hour for the aromatic lilac compounds to go into the sugar. Mix 1/4 cup sugar with pectin, this prevents the pectin from clumping when added to the mixture. In a heavy bottomed pot bring to a boil the 2 cups of water with the lilac blossoms continue boiling covered for 10 minutes.

Strain the mixture, and return the liquid back to the pot. Add the sugar pectin mixture and the lemon juice and gently boil uncovered for 30 minutes. Pour into hot sterilized jars and cap with sterilized 2-piece regular canning lids. Allow to thoroughly cool. Store in the refrigerator.

Makes two 1 cup jars.

The school would operate until 1957, with Vera Purser, who was the first teacher, serving as the last teacher as well. She had originally taught from 1916 to 1919, then from 1922 to 1924 and finally from 1954 to 1957.

Systemic Racism In Vermilion?

If you’ve been following the latest community events then you probably heard about the racism discussions in Vermilion.

Following the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota by a police officer during an arrest and a video of the incident going viral, many protests erupted all over the United States and the world against racism and police brutality.

In Vermilion things weren’t any different. On Facebook Brad Gallamore started a call for a “Vermilion Unites for Equality” protest which garnered many comments. Most of them weren’t very supportive and were skeptical of the need to have such an event since according to many, “Racism is not a problem in Vermilion.”

On June 18, the supporters of the protest gathered at the Vermilion Pollinator Garden to share their experiences with racism and “Stand up for systemic racism and demand that the Government of Canada take action and dismantle the systems that keep minorities oppressed,” according to Tigra-Lee Campbell who introduced the event with Brad.

I went and attended the protest briefly.

Part of me was being curious about what would be discussed, and the other part was that I believe in freedom of speech and that the participants had the right to speak their minds freely no matter how much myself or anyone else disagreed with them. I was also asked if I wanted to share my experience to which I declined because most of the experiences I heard sounded like nothing but minor inconveniences that most of us have to deal with from time to time when you bump into a rude person. I never heard any examples of current “Systems that keep minorities oppressed.”

As an immigrant myself and now a Canadian citizen, my experience differs from what I heard and it doesn’t line up with the narrative of the whole protest. I immigrated to Canada over five years ago from the Middle East and I’ve been living and working in Vermilion for almost four years now. During my time here I have never experienced any of the “Systemic Racism” the organizers claimed are, “Alive and well.” When I heard their claims about racism in Vermilion my first reaction was “What?!! Where? Here in Vermilion?”

This was news to me. Most people that I interact with in this community are friendly, supportive and don’t care about your ethnicity. They just treat you like a fellow human being.

There are racist individuals in town for sure; I met one myself. A guy shouted a racist slur towards me while I was walking back home one time. One guy in four years! A guy that I’ve never seen around town since. Does that really count as a

problem? Does that sound like a systemic issue? Should I use this incident to paint the whole town as racist and let it shape my experience here? You tell me.

For that one incident though, I can remember hundreds of experiences that contradict it. From little things like people smiling at me in the street, being cheery or wishing me a good day, to coworkers who helped me settle in and find a good place to live or calling on cold mornings to pick me up for work so I didn’t have to walk since I didn’t have a car back then.

None of them cared about my skin colour before helping me.

My neighbour who has been more than helpful since I moved in, jump started my car more than once, took the time to go with me to find a car battery and then helped me install it; he also didn’t care about my skin colour before helping me.

To the nice gentleman who stopped to make sure that I was okay when my car slid into the ditch outside of town and gave me a ride back home; he also didn’t check my skin colour before stopping to help me.

Many experiences of residents being kind and friendly anywhere I go - from store workers to school teachers and staff at my son’s school to doctors and healthcare workers at the hospital and almost every business I’ve dealt with all have been nothing but friendly and supportive.

This is my personal experience. It will probably differ from others but for me, I feel grateful for everyone who made me feel welcome in this town. Thank you.

That brings me to my first issue with the protest. For them, to “share your experience with racism,” is to only focus on the negative experiences no matter how few and inconvenient they were, letting them shape your whole experience by ignoring the good experiences.

Doing this paints the whole town with a big brush stroke of racism while trying to shame your fellow residents for the actions of some bad actors who are nothing but a fraction of the majority of people here.

My second biggest issue with this protest is the lack of any evidence to support their claim. If you claim that there’s a “Racism Problem” in Vermilion then you better bring numbers, statistics, data and well documented cases and not hearsay.

According to Wikipedia, Systemic Racism is a form of racism which is embedded as normal practice within society or an organization. It can lead to such issues as discrimination in criminal justice, employment, housing, health care, political power and education, among other issues.

Does that sound like something that is “Alive and Well” here in Vermilion?

Elk Point Resident Wins Oilers Mask Contest

A unique contest hit twitter on May 11, in which Edmonton Oilers fans were asked to design a goalie mask. The winning design would be made into a real Oilers mask to be auctioned off to fundraise for COVID-19 relief in Northern Alberta.

The Innisfree-Minburn 4-H Beef Club held its final meeting of the 4H year on June 3, 2020 on Zoom. We decided to have our year end wrap up on June 24 at the Innisfree Ball diamonds.

We had a potluck supper and handed out the awards, Courtney

Cannan won the Member of the Year and every member was given a camping chair. After, we played a long, and fun game of baseball. We would like to thank all the sponsors and volunteers who have supported 4-H this last crazy year. We will have a reorganizational meeting in October.

Vermilion River 4-H District Canine Show Result

Vermilion River 4-H District Executive Submitted

The Ver milion River 4 - H Vir tual Canine Show was a success. There were five member s entered in the virtual show. Members that entered, came from Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club, Vermilion River 4-H Outdoors Club and Kitscoty 4-H Multi Club. There were five Canine members through out the show in the various classes such as Trick Training, Hide and Seek, Grooming, Obedience and Agility. Members had the oppor tunit y to compete in “People’s Choice”, to see which Canine trick received the most facebook likes.

This show was also a great success due to the amazing volunteers, that judged the classes. Our judges were from within the Vermilion River District as well. Our Agility Judge was Brianne

Bellwood. Our Obedience and Grooming judge was Jessica Emmott. Thank you to the judges for their time.

Alberta And Saskatchewan Fishing Regulations

Due to the varying zones and regulations throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan, it may be hard to keep track of which regulations apply to a certain area.

In Alberta, there are three different zones: 1, the Eastern Slopes, 2, ParklandPrairie, and 3, Northern Boreal. Zone 2 as described by albertaregulations.ca, “consists approximately of the southeastern quarter of the province, east of Highway 2 from the Montana border to the North Saskatchewan River,” making Vermilion and area part of Zone 2.

In Zone 2, lakes are open all year.

Streams in Zone 2 are open from May to March (specific dates depending on the year), and bait in both streams and lakes are permitted unless otherwise posted, with the exception of live bait. Annual fishing licences are not required for individuals under 16, or anyone of treaty status.

Licences are also not required for Alberta residents over 65. Licence prices vary for

In Saskatchewan, there are three zones: southern, central, and northern. The southern zone covers all of south Saskatchewan reaching up to Pierceland. Eight Things You Should Know About Canada During Canada Day festivities on July 1, people all across the country will be celebrating their pride in being Canadian. These festivities are also an ideal occasion to remember some of the major events of our history.

1. The name “Canada” was used officially for the first time in 1791. It was created from an aboriginal word meaning “village”.

2. The British North America Act was adop-ted in 1867, making Canada a dominion of the British Empire.

3. In 1921, King George V decreed red and white to be the colours of Canada. Our na­ tional symbols are the beaver, the maple leaf, the maple tree, and the maple leaf tartan. In addition, the RCMP in their red jackets are emblems of Canada for people around the world.

4. The red and white maple leaf flag was inaugurated in 1965, on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

5. In 1967, as part of Canada’s 100th birthday celebrations,

Queen Elizabeth II crea­ted the Order of Canada, Canada’s highest civilian honorary award.

6. “O Canada” was proclaimed Canada’s na­tional anthem in 1980, a century after it was first sung on June 24, 1880.

Lakeland To Welcome Students Back To Campus For Fall Program Delivery

(Vermilion, Alta., Lloydminster, Alta./ Sask.) Lakeland College students will have the oppor tunit y to excel with the highest quality educational experience this fall through a blend of in-person, hands-on learning that will be augmented with online programming.

With guidance from Alberta Health Ser vices (AHS) and the Ministr y of Advanced Education, Lakeland will start the 2020-21 academic year offering this blended model of learning to ensure students continue to benefit from essential work-integrated opportunities while continuing to observe necessar y public health measures to keep our communit y safe. As a bi-provincial college, Lakeland is also monitoring the Saskatchewan government’s guidelines.

“Our 2020-21 academic year will be a year like no other, however, our Lakeland team is prepared to support our students in achieving their goals while delivering industry-driven programs,” s ay s D r. Critical hands-on learning activities, including labs, field work, studentmanaged farm experiences and more will be offered in-person with physical distancing protocols in effect as well as personal protective equip -

ment (PPE) as required. All lectures will be available to students virtually, either via live streaming or a recording on the college’s learning management system. Some lectures may also be offered in-person depending on the class size and AHS guidelines.

Timetables and class schedules will be revised to avoid large numbers of students in hallways at any one time.

While almost all programs will still require students to be on campus weekly, Lakeland is prepared to support those students who opt to complete their studies solely online.

Most programs will begin on Aug. 31 with an online Orientation Day. The pre-employment programs will start Sept. 21 and the first apprenticeship intake will start on Oct. 13.

“We encourage all of our students to attend campus in person for the upcoming year,” says Michael Crowe, vice president, academic and research.

“All of our students will continue to have access to our academic and nonacademic supports either in-person or vir tually. All of our students will continue to benefit from our awardwinning, career-focused programs and all of us at Lakeland are ready to help our students take the lead this fall.”

Four foundational learning programs will be of fered at the Lloydminster campus with limited class sizes.

An environmental sciences webinar will be held in the future.

On July 8, the Lakeland recruitment and enrolment team will host a webinar at 10:30 a.m. for people to learn more about support services available to them, financial aid and how Lakeland’s learner success strategist can help them. Learn more at lakelandcollege.ca/events.

Health and safety protocols The health and safety of Lakeland students, staf f and facult y is paramount. As Lakeland plans to re-open its campus to new and returning students, specific measures will be introduced to protect the campus community, including: daily survey-based screening for symptoms, physical distancing of two metres at all times, no more than 50 people in a room with appropriate physical distancing, barrier or partition installation where needed, PPE worn where required, additional hand sanitizing stations and adherence to established cleaning protocols.

Resources and support To o p t i m i z e s t u d e n t s u c c e s s , College Prep 101 is available to both new and returning students, as well as

anyone interested in post-secondary studies. This online self-paced course is available free of charge and covers 12 chapters, including developing critical thinking skills, avoiding procrastination and more. Returning students can access College Prep 101 through the Discover tab on D2L. New Lakeland students who don’t have access to D2L can access it on Aug. 10.

Since Lakeland moved to online learning to complete the semester in mid-March, the college has invested in many platforms and delivery resources to support the online learning model for both students and instructors. Lakeland’s IT team has provided the ability for live streaming to faculty, expanded the use of Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Stream, D2L’s virtual classroom and other products to bring the learning from our campus to students’ homes.

Residence Lakeland Residences will be open to students at the Vermilion and Lloydminster campuses. Residence will be limited to single occupancy bedrooms and double occupancy bathrooms.

Bacterial sanitizer will be available in each kitchen and laundry area, as well as hand sanitizer in each Residence.

Additional protocols will be in place to protect the health and well-being of residents.

Summer 2020 Lakeland will proceed with firefighting training at the end of July and the onsite practical training for the blended firefighter class, as well as truck driver training. All will be completed with the necessary PPE and physical distancing protocols, as per AHS guidelines.

Lloydminster RCMP Charge Male After Sexual Assault And Suspicious Activity

Lloydminster, Alta.- During the week of June 8, 2020, Lloydminster RCMP were aler ted to several suspicious occurrences involving women being followed by a male in public areas, including a sexual assault.

On June 8, 2020, police received a report of a male believed to be following a female in the area of Bud Miller Park. The male was not located at the time.

O n J u n e 10 , 2 0 2 0 , a t a p p r o x i -

mately 7:30 p.m., police received a call from a female indicating that she had been followed by a suspicious male in the area of 27th Street and 57th Avenue. The male confronted the female and showed her a pornographic image on his phone before she was able to obtain assistance from someone nearby.

At ap proximately 8:0 0 p.m., t he s a m e d ay, p o l i c e r e c e i ve d a c a l l from a female who had been sexually assaulted by a male while walking in the area of 39th Street and 55th

Avenue. The suspect made sexual comments to the female and touched her without her consent before she fled from the area.

As a result of these investigations, L l oyd m i n s ter R C M P ar r e s te d a n d charged Emerie Penner, 34, of Lloydminster with: • Sexual assault • Assault • Obtaining sexual ser vices for consideration • Corrupting morals • Disturbing the Peace

Penner was released by a Justice of the Peace to appear in Alberta Provincial Court in Lloydminster on July 28, 2020.

COUNTY OF MINBURN NO. 27 ROADSIDE SPRAYING PROGRAM The County of Minburn No. 27 Agriculture and Utility Services will be operating a Roadside Spraying Program for the control of noxious weeds and brush in the 2020 season.

If you do not wish to have spraying completed adjacent to your property, “DO NOT SPRAY BETWEEN SIGNS” are available from the Agriculture & Utility Services office. There is no charge for these signs however landowners are responsible to erect and maintain them on their property.

Alberta Blue Cross Shares Essential Summer Safety Tips

Plan ahead to be prepared for any situation this summer.

COVID -19 has impacted summer vacation plans for many Albertans, but the pandemic has not stopped the arrival of summer. While large social gatherings and events like festivals and outdoor concerts aren’t permitted this summer, the opportunity to spend time outdoors and travel within Alberta, responsibly, are still possible.

As a partner in Alberta’s preventable injury campaign and an organization committed to health promotion, Alberta Blue Cross® encourages Albertans to have a safe and active summer.

1. Practice sun safety.

Avoid sunburns by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least SPF 30. Generously apply it 20 minutes before going outside and reapply frequently. Don’t forget about your face and eyes—protect them by wearing a hat and sunglasses with an ultraviolet (UV) A/B certified seal. With kids being more sensitive to sunlight, it’s even more important they’re protected when outside for even short periods.

2. Stay cool and hydrated.

Sunshine and high temperatures increase your risk of sunstroke and heat exhaustion—both can be life-threatening for infants, young children and seniors.

To avoid this, stay hydrated by drinking lots of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated drinks. Increase your vitamin C intake—it provides a natural defense against heat stroke, exhaustion and heat rash. Make sure to stay cool by

wearing light-coloured clothing and seeking shade often. Never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle.

3. Be safe in and on the water.

No one plans to drown, but dozens of individuals die in water-related accidents each year in Alberta. According to the 2019 Alberta Drowning Report, 220 people drowned in Alberta from 2012 to 2016, with males aged 20 to 34 years as the most common victims of drowningrelated deaths. Most drownings occur in lakes, ponds and rivers—even as a good swimmer, you’re at risk of drowning if you fall out of a boat or are in an accident.

When visiting bodies of water, make sure you and your family are equipped with life jackets that are properly fitted to each individual and approved by Transport Canada. Children can drown in as little as one inch of water, so never leave them unsupervised in or near water.

4. Avoid pesky bug bites.

While the risk of getting a serious disease from a bug bite in Alberta is low, it’s important to be aware of the risks and how you can prevent them. Cover up with light-coloured clothing, which is less attractive to mosquitoes and allows you to see ticks easily. Wear insect repellent but apply sunscreen first. After being outside, check yourself, your children and pets for any ticks or bug bites. If you find a bug bite, follow proper instructions on how to treat it quickly to reduce the chance of infection or disease. You can find treatment instructions on MyHealth.

to the ground and teach children how to play safely. Be especially careful around recreational trampolines, which are an increasing cause of injuries among children—and ensure all trampolines contain a safety net enclosure and that any use is closely supervised. Always supervise children playing outdoors if they’re under the age of 12—be attentive and close enough to act if needed.

6. Wear a helmet.

To protect yourself from injury, it’s important to wear a helmet when on a bicycle, skateboard, scooter, rollerblades or when operating a motorized off-road vehicle. Alberta laws require helmets be worn by anyone operating a motorcycle or an off-highway vehicle—for example, an all-terrain vehicle (ATV). Albertans under the age of 18 are also required to wear a helmet when cycling. Make sure your helmet fits properly—it should be snug, level front-to-back, sit an inch above your eyebrows and allow for two fingers to fit between your chin and the strap.

7. Camp safely.

Plan to be prepared for any situation when camping. Bring a map of the area and make sure someone is aware of where you’re headed—especially if there’s no cellphone service. Bring clothing for all types of weather and always pack an emergency kit with a flashlight, a radio, extra batteries and medical supplies. Avoid attracting bears to your campsite by keeping food, garbage and recyclables inside a vehicle, hard-sided trailer or bear-proof container. In the event of severe weather, seek shelter in a building or metal-roofed vehicle—never stay in your tent. Prior to your trip, be sure to check the Alberta Parks website for the

most up-to-date information on camping regulations.

8. Keep food fresh.

Prepare and handle foods safely to reduce the risk of food-borne illness— especially when barbequing or going outdoors. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling food. Use hand sanitizer if you’re camping or on a picnic.

Keep food between 4 and 6°C to prevent growth of harmful bacteria. Discard any cooked food that has been at room temperature for more than two hours.

When in doubt, throw it out!

9. Protect your home.

Follow some of these simple tips to decrease the possibility of someone breaking into your home while you’re away on vacation—even short ones. If you’re going to mention your trip on social media, make sure your profile and status updates are set to private. While away, avoid geotagging pictures or adding the location to public status and story updates. Have friends or neighbours check in on your home to bring in mail and packages or identify any leaks or hazards that could become bigger problems. As a bonus, their visits will make potential criminals think your house is occupied.

10. Keep an eye on the sky.

As you know, summer weather conditions in Alberta can change fast. Severe weather like heavy winds, hailstorms or tornadoes can be life-threatening. Before you head out, be sure to check the weather forecast. While outside, keep an eye on the sky, keep a radio or your mobile phone nearby to be aware of any weather advisories, and have a plan to find shelter should a storm arise.

V e r m i l i o n E l e m e n t a r y School’s application for the Special Projects Award of $1000 was accepted at the Park Plains East ATA Local #31 Annual General Meeting last month. As a result, we purchased 13 pairs of larger snowshoes that our older students can use starting next winter. We would like to thank Park Plains East ATA Local #31 for helping to make this happen.

June 16 was an amazing day. VES celebrated with our Grade 6 students in a socially distanced farewell ceremony and as hard as it was not to hug each of them, it was so good to see them and tell them how proud we are of each and every one of them. Mrs. Joa and Mrs. Myshaniuk planned and executed the most special day. We wish the Grade 6 students all the best as they move into Grade 7 next year.

VES Cruisin’ into Summer Parade took place on June 19 from 12:00-1:00.

VES families drove by the school for a social distance hello/good-bye. Tunes were playing and staff members were outside to wave as their students went by. Although this was not our typical good-bye, it was great to see everyone for a few quick minutes. We would like to thank all the community members who cruised in and displayed their vintage/special vehicles in front of VES – Evan Carlson, Kevin Clark, Tolland Cochrane, Eugene Gnyra, Jim King, Todd Ree, Greg Stolz, Cameron Webb, Mike Webb, and Paul Yaceyko.

The past three months have been challenging for many, as we have not been able to do the things we are accustomed to doing. While learning online was good in many ways, it was also very challenging. We thank you all for your patience and your flexibility as we have completed this school year. We c er t ainly ex p er i e n c e d a different end to the 2019/2020 school year and we have sure missed our students. The daily conversations and connections with them are what we are hopeful to get back as we start the 2020/2021 school year.

We are experiencing changes at VES as we look to the next school year. We are moving more students out of Grade 6 than we are expecting to have in ECS, meaning a drop in our school enrollment and a drop in our revenue. This is happening at the same time as we are undergoing changes in how schools are funded

by Alberta Education. As a result of these changes, we are required to reduce the number of staff in order to maintain a balanced budget. As such,

She joined our staff in November of 2019, taking over for Miss Birch in Grade 4. At that time, we were aware that we would likely be overstaffed at the end of the school year. Miss Stachura has fit in well with our staff and will be missed by our students.

Colleen Pilkey. She has been a valuable asset to several of our students and she will be missed. In addition, we will say farewell to Mrs. Joanne Flath, our Social Emotional Coach (SEC). She will still be working in the same capacity in BTPS, but has been assigned to other schools. We are sad to see her go. However, we will happily welcome our new SEC, Mrs. Tanya Laye. She will be at VES all day Wednesdays as well as Friday mornings.

The Alberta government has indicated that schools are to be prepared for any of the following scenerios for September: 1. I n - s c h o o l c l a s s e s r e s u m e (near normal operations with health measures) 2. In-school classes partially resume with additional health measures 3 . At h o m e l e a r n i n g c o n t i n u e s (in-school classes are cancelled) They have also indicated that they will provide further direction on August 1. We are all doing our best to be optimistic that scenario number 1 will be possible. In the meantime, we would like to wish everyone a wonderful summer and we c er t ainly look forward to seeing you all in September. Together, we will get through these crazy times. Stay strong. Stay safe. Stay positive.

The Race Of Vermilion Success

The day was a great success!

Being that we are making our best efforts to respect the regulations set out during the re-opening of Alberta, we limited the number of teams and ensured that we encouraged the current social distancing expectations. Advertising for the event was only done locally, so we did not have the mass amount of people that we had in the past. Even so, it was still a great opportunity to encourage people to learn more about our businesses and attractions.

A list of 90 tasks were sent out to the participants via email, which they completed throughout town (mostly through signage posted on the outside of the business), home, and online. We began the Race at noon and ended it at 4 p.m. All tasks were submitted to me through photos and videos online.

The feedback about the day was great and people really enjoyed themselves.

It was a fun way to spend family time,

I’m very thankful for the participants, the volunteers, the businesses, and the community for ensuring that the Good Life Institute can continue to bring fun and exciting events to Vermilion, even among these uncertain times. Though we had to change the format for this year to accommodate a safer atmosphere, including cancellation of the reception, everyone had a positive attitude and created a wonderful, action packed day.

The winners were as follows: 3rd place: Gourley Group - 1,915 points (Darlene Gourley and kids).

2nd place: Breef Broff - 2,445 points (Cathy Bolton, Janet Rogers, Jo Tichkowsky, and Jessie Ramsey).
