On May 26, United Church Minister Andrew Kinoti’s son, Sam Kinoti, celebrated his 4th birthday with a drive-by social distance celebration.

Members of the church and communit y arrived at 6:30 p.m. to line up in a parade-like procession to drive past and wave at the bir thday boy, some offering balloons and presents.

Andrew notes that it was members of the church who offered to organize a drive-by celebration, and that they

were more than happy to send out invitations, take pictures, and support Sam on his special day- despite being unable to celebrate traditionally. “It’s not how we would usually celebrate, but I think this is more memorable for him [Sam].” Andrew Kinoti states. “It is a lovely, lovely day... We appreciate the community.”

E x per ien c ing the pandemic of COVID19 this spring has been pivotal for so many individuals, families, and bu s in e s se s. As my business and so many other businesses re-open after being ordered shut by the Government we find that it is not really businesses as usual. There are a lot of changes, hand sanitizer at the door, customers must social distance, newly installed plexiglass barriers at cash desks and the customers are feeling unsure. The economy has taken a round of very serious blows. Many people have lost their jobs, as a result of businesses being forced shut. There are people that on the onset left their jobs out of fear and terror because they were so afraid to continue on.

Some people have continued to work with reduced hours and/or reduced pay. There are others that remain unaffected, being allowed to safely work from home with no loss in wages. Teachers have had to pivot and are doing their best to get their students to the end of the school year via distance ed. A local hairdresser told me that none of her staff, except one, is willing to return

to work. Another lady informed me of difficulty getting staff, while people can continue to stay home and collect a $2,000 CERB payment from the government.

Many people have had to work, in spite of the fear. Our front-line medical workers, grocery staff, truckers, RCMP, firefighters, and other essential services have had to embrace the fear and do it anyway. That is called courage. They are risking their lives in the care of others. Some of them have given their very lives in this fight to help others. My heartfelt thanks to all of them. My daughter in law is a nurse in Edmonton and has to suit up in PPE to work with COVID patients, and we continue to hope and pray that she will be safe, along with my son and grandchildren.

People are expected to stay two meters apart to help stop the spread. Social distancing, while keeping us safer has slowed down businesses and manufacturing. The other problem that businesses have faced is shortages, such as shortages of labour, certain food items, alcohol, containers and lids for sanitizers and even shortages of medical protective masks at the onset. Businesses are trying to figure out how to best pivot their business to fill the needs of their community.

hand sanitizer, volunteers are sewing protective coverings for hospitals, companies that made blinds are making face shields, glass companies are making counter shields of lexan and my drapery business has pivoted into sewing face masks to help protect our community.

People are missing seeing their family members, I especially hear of grandmothers missing seeing their children and grandchildren. People are missing gathering for family events, church services, meetings, and meals. Some are trying to gather by still practicing social distancing and limiting the size to 15 indoors or 50 outside. Weddings are in limbo and some funeral gatherings have been postponed. It has been the year of Zoom. Businesses are doing meetings on Zoom. Prayer groups are meeting on Zoom to pray for the nation, local needs and death to the Coronavirus. Lots of families shared their Easter dinner over a Zoom call. News broadcasters are doing live interviews on Zoom. Somehow through all of this, the voice of conservatives has been eliminated largely from the media in favour of the left.

There are untold stories such as the high suicide rate caused by unemployment and added stress. If you can, reach out to offer an encouraging word or support to those

facing untold hardship.

Now that my business is open, I have had the opportunity to talk to customers about how they are doing through all of this. Some people are still wanting curbside delivery, while others are glad to be able to finally get out and shop unaffected by the lockdown.

I have heard of people having difficulty sleeping, having a good cry or a complete emotional meltdown. Some of the people working from home have that added responsibility of looking after their young children all day, being the teacher, preparing all the meals and the cleanup and trying to get their paid employment done as well. I have heard the stress experienced from medical personal of dealing with patients with COVID. When I asked one lady how she is doing through all of this, she pointedly told me, “Well, my husband and I are now separated.” I have heard stories of their 80-yearold loved one catching COVID in the hospital and still fighting it. I have had people tell me that they live the life basically of a recluse, so things have not really changed for them, while others inform me that life will never return to normal. For now, we are washing our hands a lot more, spreading way less disease, doing what we can to help and hoping this is soon behind us all.

I am submitting this letter because of the terrible repor ts from eastern Canada about Long Term Care facilities; so bad that they have had to use military personnel for staffing. More than one resident is repor ted with unchanged diapers, stained and damp clothing, etc.

Robson School • St. Jerome’s School • Vermilion Outreach School ALL students riding on a Vermilion in-town bus (VR-VT24, VR-VT25, VR-VT26, VR-VT27 and/or VR-VT28) are required to register annually.

INELIGIBLE /TRANSPORTATION TO CAREGIVER BUSSING FEES Ineligible passengers are those students residing less than 2.4 km by roadway or public right of way from their designated school pursuant to Section 51 (2) of the School Act. All ineligible passengers are required to pay a fee.

Transportation to Caregiver bussing is subject to availability. Privileges may be revoked if space becomes an issue. The caregiver’s residence must be in the student’s designated transportation (attendance) area. Fees will not be pro-rated for am or pm only for Transportation to Caregiver bussing as we are reserving a seat for your child on the bus.

Students who ride two different buses will be required to pay an additional fee, this includes transportation to a second primary residence.

Beverly Hollen, President Of Creighton Women’s Institute

Senior Beverly Hollen has a rich local history, a large part of which has been her involvement in Alberta Women’s Institute (WI).

Hollen recalls attending WI meetings since childhood, as her mother Elfreida Westover often would take Hollen with her when she attended. Hollen herself became an official member in approximately 1988.

Alberta Women’s Institute (AWI) is a voluntary association for women and has been active for over 100 years. The institute is made up of women who stand “ for home and country” as quoted in their motto.

AWI is a part of the Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada, which is closely associated with the Associated Country Women of the World, an international organization that focuses on volunteer work, activism, and education.

AWI has branches all across Alberta, with its local branch being Creighton Women’s Institute (CWI) established in 1932, of which Beverly Hollen has been president for approximately 20 years. Hollen calls the branch “A generational WI, because many of our grandmothers and mothers have been members of Creighton.”

As a member of a provincial organization, CWI has been involved in petitions presented at both a local and federal level. Creighton itself has sponsored local high school and post secondary scholarships, and supported agricultural education at the elementary level. Creighton supports various

programs and establishments in Mannville, such as the Mannville Public Library, the hot lunch program, and the patient fund. CWI also supports charitable organizations such as the Mannville food bank and Operation Christmas Child, an organization that sends Christmas gifts to children in poverty around the world.

Hollen also repor ts that AWI is not only about helping the community, but also enriching each other’s lives. When asked about her own experience with WI, Hollen states; “I enjoy the things we learn; I enjoy associating with various branches, and of course, members of our own branch. We aim to have fun together and learn new things.”

Hollen is enthusiastic about the work CWI has done. However, despite its rich history, Hollen is concerned about the future of CWI. “We’re blessed to have 12 members... What I would like to see is a new branch started up with younger women interested in good family values and supporting women in their community, and also in their country; we need young blood, and new ideas to be presented.”

Hollen approaches her role in AWI with focus, passion, and care for her community.

She also asks that if women of any age are interested in joining, she would be more than happy to welcome them into Creighton WI, or help them in establishing a new branch if that is preferred. It is evident that Hollen’s involvement in the Women’s Institute has had a great impact on her own life.

Submitted Seniors’ Week 2020 will, in some ways, be different than any other in the 34 years of this wonderful Alberta tradition.

Although COVID-19 will change the way we celebrate this year, it won’t change the spirit of Seniors’ Week. That spirit is as strong as ever and, as ever, it is about recognizing and celebrating all that seniors

have contributed to making our families, communities and province so much stronger.

In past years, we have celebrated seniors at BBQs, teas, parties and all types of social events. These can be gatherings in seniors centres and lodges and community halls throughout the province.

This year, pandemic-related restrictions will prevent those types of large gatherings.

It won’t prevent us, however, from celebrating Seniors’ Week in fun, creative and innovative ways. A lot of us are leveraging technology to stay connected with family and friends during this challenging time.

Don’t be surprised if the senior in your family suggests hosting an event on Facetime, Zoom or other online platforms.

You could consider sending fun videos with grandchildren dancing or singing a song. Some communities will hold parades, ensuring physical distancing, that will move their way to seniors residences where people will leave cards outside for seniors.

Offer to pick up groceries, run errands, drop by a senior’s home and cut the grass.

It all matters.

Most importantly, check in with the seniors you know.

Even if we can’t all be together, let’s

make sure that all seniors feel valued by family, friends and Albertans.

Alberta has a strong, active, and growing seniors population of more than 640,000. These seniors are vital members of our communities and they make a difference in our daily lives. Seniors have lived through difficult times. They have much to share with us.

I say it all the time – seniors are the strength of Alberta. Enjoy Seniors’ Week from June 1-7.

Be safe, have fun and thank you to all Alberta Seniors.

Vermilion River 4H Club Year End Report

The Vermilion River 4-H Outdoor Club has had an incredibly fun year despite the challenges this year has thrown at us. Our projects started up again in the fall and we welcomed some new members. The Survival project has done a couple different activities over the year, including hiking, building fires, knot tying, cooking over fires and archery. The Shooting project had a blast this year doing skeet shooting, target shooting with several types of rifles, archery, and gun cleaning. The Canine project was also fairly busy this year, doing obedience training, and some members continued to work on trick dog training. They also trained their dogs how to do specific agility obstacles. We held our Club Communications Day on February 2. All members

did extremely well, and congratulations from this year. We are disappointed that Supper, but look out for our Thank You to the members who went on to District we cannot host our usual Appreciation video!

Public Speaking.

As for achievement days we are going virtual through the Vermilion River District Virtual shows.

The Canine Show is June 15-20 and has categories like agility, hide and seek, obedience and grooming. The Survival Display will be held on July 2-8 and will have categories like shelter building, survival tools and “what is in my survival bag?�. The Shooting Display will be at the same time as the Survival Display. Members will be showing off their archery, skeet shooting, gun safety, and long distance shooting skills.

Road Conditions: please monitor our website and social media for updates on Bans and Road Closures during the spring melt.

Road Bans remain in lace, as do a number of temporary road closures.

Watering Restrictions: all Hamlets are on watering restrictions whereby even numbered houses can water on even days, odd on odd.

Roadside Mowing: all work must be completed (hay cut, baled and bales removed) by July 15 to allow for mowing. Get a Roadside Hay Permit if you want the roadside left unsprayed until July 15 for haying.

Roadside Spraying: CVR will be spraying weeds and brush along road allowances starting in June 2020. Roadside spraying will focus in Spray Area 2 (found on our website), but will be selectively spraying noxious weeds and brush throughout the County.
