At 3 p.m. on April 24, the Vermilion First United Church bells rang 22 times to honour the 22 victims of Nova Scotia’s mass shooting.

T h e b e l l s r a n g i n c o l l a b o r at i o n w i t h c hur c h e s ac ro s s t h e c ountr y and according to Leslie Bruce, the idea came from a social media post in Prince Edward Island encouraging others to follow along in support.

Bruce was born in Nova Scotia, and with a brother and friends still there, she has an ongoing connection to the

province.

After receiving some minor repairs, the bell in Vermilion was ready to join in with those across multiple time zones. Residents who were listening paused and sent warm thoughts and prayers to their fellow countrymen.

“With this going on during a pandemic it is hard to comprehend.

They cannot come together to mourn or provide solace. It’s a heartbreaker, a n d we wa n te d to p r ov i d e a n i c e gesture to let them know that we are thinking of them,” said Bruce.

Vermilion & Clandonald Interclub

The Vermilion and Clandonald Interclub 4H Beef Club decided not to hold their annual show and sale due to COVID-19 and the decision directed by 4H Canada to practice social distancing.

Both clubs’ members voted to sell via private treaty on the rail. Each member marketed their own steer and offered a sale price of $3.75 per dressed pound for a quarter, half, or whole beef.

Even though they were unable to show, the members have spent endless hours with their project: halter breaking, washing and clipping for a photo to showcase their achievement. Although there will be no placing, there is an option to enter into a virtual show to showcase their project.

According to Clandonald Leader, Fern Axley, the Vermilion River District stepped up and is doing an online show this year

as well. From May 1 – 15, members will be able to submit their applications.

Throughout the year, 4H members gain work ethic, friendships, travel opportunities, scholarships, awards, public speaking opportunities and more from the 4H organization. Children as young as 6 – 8 can participate as a cleaver member. These young members work with a calendar year calf and show at Achievement Day. “The children were extremely disappointed to have their shows cancelled, but are happy that the clubs are giving them the opportunity to showcase their animals.

4H has continued through all of this, and clubs are still run by children no matter what is going on in the world. The 4H motto is ‘Learn to do by doing,’ and although adults can provide them information, the children were the ones making the decisions. 4H requires that you prove achievement, and so they chose to market the animals as they

Hi everyone, I hope you are all healthy and staying safe. As we maneuver through this difficult time, I have heard the term reset repeatedly. With so many people staying home, to protect our community do any of you feel that in some ways we have returned to simpler times? More time with our family, more home cooking and stronger community bonds. Saskatchewan has announced their reopening schedule beginning in early May, and Alberta is expected to release their plan sometime this week. In three to four weeks many of us will be slowly transitioning out of our cocoon. As the economy reopens remember there are many small and locally owned businesses that will require your support to survive. Please practice supporting them as a civic duty, to help them survive the war that Covid has waged on them. As we as a community recover from Covid it will require wisdom, diligence and courage on our part.

Mocha Pudding Cake

This is a crazy cake for crazy times.

While this dish is baking an amazing thing happens. The thin sauce you poured on the top forms into a pudding at the bottom of the baking dish and the cake batter you placed on the bottom rises to the top. It is a chocolate cake with chocolate pudding on the bottom all in one pan. This is an old-fashioned dessert recipe that is a throwback to simpler times. Dessert is a great comfort food and for chocolate lovers, this one is a real treat. It required only basis ingredients and is quick and easy to make. It is a cake recipe that does not use eggs, maybe that is part of the secret, of how it does the flip in the oven. Cocoa powder is a good source of magnesium and an excellent source of anti-oxidants. Cocoa is known to reduce blood pressure and to be heart healthy.

Grease your casserole baking dish, I use butter. Mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder and baking powder. Stir in the olive oil and milk. It will be a very thick batter.

Spread the batter in the bottom of a casserole dish. You can use a 9” round or a 8” square. In a separate bowl or 4 cup glass measuring cup add and mix together the sugar, butter, cocoa powder and hot water.

Pour this mixture over the batter, leaving it to float on top of the batter. Do not stir. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes. You can serve it hot with cream or ice cream. It can also be served cold, with the chocolate sauce spooned on top of whipped cream or ice cream. The brown sugar can be increased to 1 cup depending on how sweet you like to live or how dark you like your chocolate to be.

It was on a beautiful spring day in May of 1907 when t h e d e c i s i o n wa s made to form the Morrison School District, which was the eighth school district formed in the area. At the meeting to form the school, Wyndham Gould would become the first chairman of the school district and the decision was made to build the school on the land of James Morrison. In return for offering the land, he asked that the school district be named after him.

The school was built by the Calder Brothers and by October of 1907, the

school was ready to open. Everything officially kicked off with a dance on the evening of Oct. 12, 1907, where proceeds were raised to the tune of $68 so that an organ could be purchased for the All Saints Church.

The school opened to students on Nov. 27 of that year, and E.H. Moore was the first teacher. In all, 20 students would attend the school that first year. Students also made money at the school that first year. Two students, Bert and Fred Gould, would carry kindling from their home to light fires at the school for ten cents per day.

Moore would remain as the teacher until 1908 until she moved on. Many other teachers would come and go, with the vast majority staying for one to two years

at most. Alpha McConnell and Clara Bowen were two teachers that stayed for three years but this was relatively rare in those years.

The pay was quite good for teachers at the time, with S. Martin Burris making $1,000 a year in 1923-24.

The enrolment of the school would rise and fall as well. In February of 1916, only four students attended the school, but in October of 1940, 35 students would be at the school.

One year, a teacher refused to teach grade nine when grade nine instruction was needed. The teacher had to be fired, which created a great deal of controversy at the time.

As with so many other schools, they were more than just a place for educa-

tion. The Morrison School would serve as a community centre, playhouse, church and polling-place. The MD of Vermillion Valley would hold its meetings there for several years.

Sadly, by the mid-1940s, enrolment was falling and it was decided to bus students to larger and more central schools. The building would be used a little bit for the next few years before it was moved to Islam in October 1969 by the Morrison Museum Association, where it now serves as the Morrison Museum of the Country School.

COVID-19 Update

According to Alberta.ca as of April 24, there was one COVID-19 recovered case in the County of Minburn, one active and one recovered case in the County of Vermilion River, one recovered case in the City of Lloydminster, and one active case in the Municipal District of Wainwright.

They claimed that Canada had 41,143 cases, of those 3,688 were in Alberta, and 79 of those were in the central zone.

According to a social media post from Pioneer Lodge & House (PL&H) in Lloydminster on April 22, their building had announced a COVID-19 outbreak, meaning at least one resident or staff had tested positive.

Pioneer Lodge is a senior Level 2 independent living facility that houses 134 residents. Pioneer House is a senior Level 4 facility that offers health care support from AHS to 44 residents.

PL&H stated that the Medical Health Officer of Saskatchewan declared the COVID-19 outbreak at their facility and that residents and family were informed on April 20.

They immediately initiated a mandatory 14 day isolation (sending home any residents or staff who had close contact e.g. held hands, delivered food, assisted the resident, etc.).

As a result, further restrictions have been placed on the residents. According to PL&H, Medical Health Officer is asking all residents to stay in their own suites/rooms for at least 14 days to ensure no other person has contracted this virus. Staff will continue to provide meal delivery and snacks six times a day as well as any store bought supplies or goodies) sent by family. They are encouraging frequent phone calls and video chats to residents at this time.

They are hoping to continue providing a calm and comfortable environment in order to combat any feelings of depression or loneliness.

They go on to say that residents will be monitored by health services during this time, and after which, the health authorities are likely to reassess the outbreak restrictions. They ensure that staff will be monitored by health services during that time after which they are expected back without issue.

April 23, - VERMILION, ALBERTA 18,000 video views in just a few hours it’s an impressive number for a town of just 4,000 people.

While small businesses across the country scramble to make sense of a world where foot traffic has been eliminated, Vermilion, Alberta has embraced its brick-and-mor tar entrepreneurs, producers and creators.

Under normal circumstances, Vermilion’s historic downtown is a place for locals and travellers to take in boutique shops, eateries, and a distillery.

What happens when everyone has to stay home? #VermilionOnline was born.

Many local shops and experiences have joined the #VermilionOnline movement including Wednesday’s #VermilionOnline Festival. A handful of business owners, armed with phones, and creativity, took turns live broadcasting on Facebook to create a virtual festival tour through Vermilion.

“My take out sales went through the roof,” said Leon Kennedy, owner of Hubkins Restaurant. He had his cooker set up outside for the #VermilionOnline Festival to serve up brisket, ribs, and pulled pork to go.

“It was amazing. The community response was outstanding. I haven’t had a day like that in a very long time. And I needed it,” Kennedy said.

“On an average day right now I pull about $150. Wednesday I pulled $950.”

Stepping out in front of the camera for the first time was nerve-racking for entrepreneurs participating, like Melissa Cusack, owner of Fresh Apparel Vermilion.

“I was super nervous, I’ve never done anything like that before.”

Cusack said it was nice to have people tune in who have never stepped inside her store before.

“After we did [our live broadcast] we had 3 or 4 orders which is what I would be

Vermilion Public Library Offering Curbside Pickup

The Vermilion Public Library has begun offering curbside pickup, and details of how the model works can be found at https:// www.vermilionpubliclibrary.ca/CurbsidePickup.

The website also outlines the precautions they are taking to make it a safe experience. According to manager, Stuart Pauls, customers can place a request on the online catalogue http://tracpac.ab.ca or call 780-853-4288 or email the library at info@vplibrary.ca. When the items are ready for pickup, they will contact the customer to setup a pickup appointment, during which items can be picked up from the metal cart outside the front door. Because items are already signed

out to customers, there is no staff contact or need to verify a library card.

Currently they can only loan the resources that that they have in house.

Pauls said, “We can verify that our items on hand are clean and safe to lend, but introducing items from other libraries is a bigger issue that has yet to be sorted out.

We have not changed any of the restrictions on borrowing, so patrons are still limited to 25 items per card and can borrow whatever they see in the online catalogue that belongs to Vermilion.”

He noted that board trustees and staff have gone to an extraordinary amount of research, planning, and discussion about how to implement this program safely. On their first day of offering this service, they filled up nearly all of their pickup appoint-

ments slots. Pauls feels that the program is working well so far and said they were happy to receive positive feedback from their users who were happy to borrow library material again. To make things easy for their patrons the board has announced free library memberships for anyone who wishes to access their online resources like e-books, audiobooks, and databases.

Handling Stress In Uncertain Times

We are navigating a seriously uncertain time right now. A good first step when handling unprecedented stress is to acknowledge where you are at. Try to sit with how you are coping emotionally, physically, spiritually, and mentally. Notice where this is most difficult for you. Accepting where we are at and being gentle with ourselves helps to relieve the pressure to “have it all figured out”. Repeat after me, “there is no one right way to experience a pandemic.” period.

With less expectations of ourselves and others we can breathe a little easier. A simple breathing exercise is to consciously breathe. I know this sounds silly but stay with me here. Breathing is something we do automatically so bringing your full attention to your breath helps with circulation, improves digestion, and calms the nervous system which helps the mind to feel more relaxed and in control. So breathe in and breathe out. Do this for at least 10 full breaths. Notice the sensations like the rise and fall of your belly or the way your body feels with each breath cycle.

Emotion is energy in motion. Shame and guilt around emotions can prevent from feeling and letting go. Movement can help us release pent up emotions and can help us reset; getting the body out of fight/ flight/freeze and into rest/heal/digest. So think of some of the ways you can get things moving through your body. Yoga, running, dancing, cleaning (hey this works for some!), crying (there’s a reason they call it cathartic), or conscious breathing/breathwork.

We believe there is no right way to create movement

in the body. Spontaneous or static; whatever you decide is perfect!

COVID-19: City Responds To Saskatchewan’s Plan To Reopen The Province

City of Lloydminster Submitted

Lloydminster, AB/SK – On Thursday, April 23, 2020, Premier Scott Moe announced the Government of Saskatchewan’s plan to reopen the province. The plan will use a phased-in approach, allowing the provincial government to slowly and responsibly lift restrictions on businesses and services.

“With any decision, the health and safety of the community is of the utmost impor tance. The Cit y of Lloydminster continues its discussions with both provincial governments and their respective health authorities to assess the plan’s impacts at the local level. This will allow the City to ensure any amendments made

under the State of Local Emergency are in alignment of both provinces,” said Jordan Newton, Manager of Emergency Measures Operations.

Residents and business owners within the limits of the city of Lloydminster, are reminded to follow the measures set out in the State of Local Emergency. These measures can be found at lloydminster. ca/COVID-19.

The City of Lloydminster will release additional information regarding its response to the Province of Saskatchewan’s announcement and COVID-19 in the coming days.

Improving Environmental Performance And Bottom Lines

On Earth Day, Canadians and people all over the world celebrate the positive impacts they can have on the environment. In the past, the Beef Cattle Research Council has highlighted beef’s positive impact on biodiversity, carbon sequestration and maintaining prairie habitat, as well as positive changes producers have made to reduce the environmental footprint of Canadian beef.

What often gets overlooked is that everyday improvements in efficiencies help to reduce the environmental impact of Canadian beef. This means that simply by working to improve their bottom line, beef producers are improving the environmental performance of our industry at the same time.

Improving production efficiencies, greater forage productivity, enhanced reproductive performance, improved animal health and reduced days on feed all play a role in reducing the impact that beef production has on the environment.

The following are some current projects underway, funded by the Canadian Beef Check-Off, that are working to improve beef production efficiencies and consequently reduce the environmental impact of beef.

Understanding Feedlot Lameness: Feedlot lameness is a common problem with both economic and animal welfare implications. Animals that are lame often end up on feed longer and some end up being euthanized. Dr. Karen Schwartzkopf -Genswein and Dr. Murray Jelinski and their team have been looking into ways to better understand and treat feedlot lameness. In this project they are looking specifically at cases of digital dermatitis and toe tip necrosis and comparing different antibiotic and nonantibiotic treatment methods. This work will help determine which treatment methods are most effective and will reduce the reliance on antimicrobials, reduce the

risk of antimicrobial resistance , improve animal welfare, and improve production efficiencies leading to a reduced environmental footprint.

Improving Grazing in Forested Areas: Forested areas are important grazing for many beef producers in regions across the country, but often, as the trees age, they begin to block out sunlight meaning growing high quality forages for grazing is difficult. For this project Dr. Lauchlan Fraser and his team paired up with the logging industry to try to find a solution to this problem that will benefit both industries. Researchers are looking at a silvopasture system where trees are thinned in strips of varying widths to determine what works best to optimize both forage and timber growth. Integrating strip logging and grazing into a forestry system has the added benefits of increasing biodiversity, helping reduce erosion, provide forest fire management and promoting faster habitat recovery for logged sites.

Learning from Good Feedlot Pen Checkers: Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a major cause of sickness, death, and production losses in the feedlot industry.

One of the most important factors in treatment success is early detection and treatment. This may sound easy but the signs are often subtle and hard to distinguish in a pen of cattle. Good pen checkers are able to identify and pull cattle that are sick early, have lower rates of “false pulls” and have lower re-treatment rates. Although lots of research has been conducted on BRD treatment, there is little work focusing on what top performing pen checkers are looking for that enables them to make better and earlier diagnosis. Dr. Diego Moya, and his team are doing just that.

They will visually evaluate and interview experienced pen checkers to learn how they decide which animals to pull. They will identify commonalities among effective pen checkers and use these common

habits and cues to develop resources for inexperienced or less successful pen checkers. From there they will test those recommendations; if they prove successful, they will develop training tools for detecting BRD signs early. Enabling more people to detect BRD early will improve treatment rates and reduce the amount of time animals are sick and off feed, as well as reduce the number of deaths from BRD. Improving animal health and growth efficiency reduces feed inputs and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per kilogram of beef produced.

Breeding Better Alfalfa: Adding a legume to forage stands increases forage yields and allows producers to raise more cattle (and pounds of beef) on less land. Alfalfa, although widely used, is susceptible to many stressors including salinity, drought, and winterkill. These factors can result in alfalfa declining in a mixed forage stand over time. Dr. Stacy Singer and her team are working to breed an alfalfa plant that is more resilient to these and other stressors. They are using modern genome editing technologies that enable them to tweak genes that are already present in the plant. This project will design plants that survive and flourish in harsh environments, helping producers to keep alfalfa in their forage stands longer and reduce reseeding costs and environmental impacts.

These projects, and many others funded by producer check-off dollars, help make small steps toward a more efficient and environmentally friendly beef herd. On their own, each project may

seem to make a slight contribution, but minor, cumulative advancements have led to significant improvements in beef’s environmental performance in the big picture. For example, between 1981 and 2011, greenhouse gas emissions per kilogram of Canadian beef dropped by 15%, and water use per kilogram of Canadian beef fell by 17%. These are advancements worth recognizing and celebrating.

COVID-19 Shuts Down Half Of Canada’s Beef Supply

A COVID-19 outbreak in a Cargill plant at High River, Alberta has shut down almost half of Canada’s beef supply, leaving many farmers with no place to sell their cattle. Nearly all beef produced in Canada is processed by three high-volume, highthroughput meat packing plants: Cargill’s High River facility, the JBS plant in Brooks, Alberta and the smaller Cargill plant in Guelph, Ontario. The two Alberta plants have 85% of Canada’s beef slaughter capacity and both are now grappling with COVID-19 outbreaks. While this choke point gives US-based Cargill and Brazilian JBS tremendous power over both cattle prices paid to farmers and the grocery store beef prices paid by consumers, the pandemic outbreaks show it is also one of the weakest links in Canada’s food system.

This week a major COVID-19 outbreak

in Cargill’s Alberta plant and a smaller outbreak at the JBS plant have required slow-downs at the JBS plant and a shutdown of the Cargill facility to protect the health of plant workers and the wider community. This also has a domino effect through the food system. Demand for cattle has collapsed, and if supplies dwindle, retail beef prices will likely rise. Without intervention, the price difference between the price of cattle and grocery store beef will end up harming both farmers and consumers while enhancing the already large profits of JBS and Cargill.

“Excessive concentration of ownership and centralization of beef processing, supported and encouraged by our federal and provincial governments, has now put the health of workers, the beef supply and the livelihoods of thousands of farmers in jeopardy,” said Iain Aitken, National Farmers Union (NFU) member and Manitoba

beef producer. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of the Cargill worker who lost her life to COVID 19.”

“Farmers need emergency support so we can take care of our livestock until the plants ramp up again. Health and safety come first, but you can’t tell the cows to stop eating and growing until the crisis is over,” said Ian Robson, Deleau Manitoba mixed farmer and NFU Board member. “We need a price floor to make sure that Cargill and JBS don’t take advantage of this crisis to reduce prices. Today’s government must not make the same kind of mistakes as during the BSE Mad Cow crisis when the giant packers pocketed support program money and put hundreds of family farms out of business.”

The NFU also urges emergency support to lay the groundwork for a more resilient and fair meat sector in Canada.

“The NFU’s vision is for a food policy

based on food sovereignty,” said Tim Dowling, grassfed beef producer from the Kingston, Ontario area. “Our food system would then support more family farmers providing more food for more Canadians by focussing on building up our capacity to serve local and regional markets across the country.”

In 2008 the NFU published a comprehensive study of Canada’s cattle industry, analysing the development meat packing companies’ concentration, the impacts on cattle prices for farmers, and offering solutions that would reorient the system towards a more resilient beef sector. Its recommendations are more valid than ever today.

“The COVID-19 crisis is a wake-up call and an opportunity to rebuild our economy in ways that work for people, and which have the resilience to manage the crisis conditions that will undoubtedly occur in the future,” conclude Aitken.
