What would you like to say to frontline workers throughout this constituency?

“At times such as these I am reminded of the quote, attributed to author James Lane Allen, ‘Adversity doesn’t develop character, it reveals it.’

In our current adversity our Health workers are steadfastly providing high quality treatment and care to Albertans. The current circumstances place added pressure on their skills and this is further exacerbated by the increase in numbers affected.

What recommendations would you give to constituents to prevent COVID19?

“As we move forward we find out more about this virus and develop new strategies and tactics to contain and eradicate it.

to the circumstances in Alberta,” said Rowswell.

Amid the pandemic, what hope does the recent Keystone pipeline decision offer?

“Given the circumstances it might be considered crass to repeat here the quote by Benjamin Franklin about the only certainties in life. However, that pithy aphorism holds true.

The Premier is hopeful. He is quoted as saying ‘It is a solid bet that will produce a handsome return for Albertans and it will rescue the future of our energy industry.’

Not only does the Keystone pipeline purchase offer a bold and calculated hope but it is hope built on faith. Faith that this crisis will pass and that Alberta will be able to prosper once more,” said Rowswell.

What kinds of benefits will this project bring to Alberta?

“Keystone XL, along with the Trans Mountain expansion and Enbridge’s Line 3 project will unclog a distribution bottleneck which has plagued the province’s producers for years. Once complete, it will allow 830,000 barrels per day to be moved from Hardisty to Nebraska.

This project will spur employment, creating 1,400 jobs in Alberta and 1,200 in Saskatchewan, while it is also estimated to generate $30 Billion in taxes and royalties.

In these difficult times this decision indicates to the Energy industry that Alberta remains open for business and that the UCP government has faith in them and the people of Alberta. As the groundwork has been laid this project is ‘shovel ready’.

In today’s economic environment this is a critically important project both in business terms and for morale.

I applaud the Premier for his foresight in respect of this decision,” said Rowswell.

In the coming months what hope and encouragement can you offer your constituents?

“While the unknown of the potential of

the virus is a cause for genuine concern, what we do know is that we have an effective medical system and highly skilled, dedicated, staff to support us.

We know that they, along with medical staff worldwide, are doggedly seeking a therapeutic cure and that all sectors of business are creating innovative solutions to produce the ancillary medical equipments (masks, ventilators etc.) that the medical system might need.

The one area that causes me concern is the provision of financial support to those who have lost their jobs or those whose businesses are under pressure.

This crisis, as all crises do, came upon us suddenly. Both the Federal and Provincial governments have responded as quickly as able in approving financial assistance. However, I have received a number of complaints regarding the underperformance of the online application systems.

These complaints are justified. These sites were not designed to cater for such large numbers of applicants. People have the right to seek assistance and that the assistance available is good. But, it must be accessible. We recognise the capacity failings of the system and I am assured by the Minister of Service Alberta, my UCP colleague Nate Glubish, that he and his staff are working overtime to rectify this problem.

It says in the Book of Common Prayer ‘in the midst of life we are in death’. I do not think for one moment this means we should meekly accept the inevitable, and my government certainly has not.

The restrictions on movement, which have been placed upon Albertans reluctantly, the high quality of care available and the financial assistance provided is providing tangible and practical hope to us all.

These factors, allied to the indomitable character of Albertans, serves as my message of encouragement and hope,” said Rowswell.

Alberta Chief Medical Officer’s COVID-19 Update

On April 2, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, provided the following statements during her update on COVID-19 and the ongoing work to protect public health: “Today, I am reporting that we confirmed 96 new cases of COVID-19 in Alberta. This brings the total number of cases to 968.

Of these, 174 people have now recovered. That is 32 more than yesterday. We suspect 108 of our total cases may be community transmission, an increase of 14 from yesterday.

I am also pleased to note that we conducted more than 4000 tests in the last 24 hours, as our lab continues to work at

maximum capacity. Of these tests, approximately 98% came back negative, similar to previous days,” said Hinshaw.

She went on to extend condolences to the families of two more Alberta men who passed away as a result of COVID-19 (one was in his 80s from the North Zone, and the other was in his 90s at the McKenzie Towne Continuing Care Centre in Calgary).

She went on to say that Alberta now has 74 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in continuing care facilities, and she expects more to be confirmed in the coming days (this includes 65 confirmed cases at the McKenzie Towne Long-term Care Centre and two new cases in the Manoir du Lac Retirement Home in the North Zone). According to Hinshaw as of April 2, there were

nine outbreaks at continuing care facilities across the province. Some of these are due to staff members who have been confirmed cases working both at McKenzie Towne Long Term Care facility and another site.

“It has become clear over the past couple of days that we must do more to protect those in congregate settings. That is why, effective today, I am issuing new standards that operators and staff of these facilities must follow in the event of a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 outbreak. By the end of today, it is likely we will reach over one million COVID cases worldwide.

The way we go about our lives has changed, and we must continue to adjust to the new normal to help protect ourselves, and to protect our families, friends, and

neighbours. This virus has shown how much our individual actions—no matter how small—can impact the lives of others and the tragic consequences that can result. We are all in this together, and we all have a role to play in keeping each other safe,” said Hinshaw.

As of April 2, 57,096 COVID-19 tests had been completed in Alberta, and the Central Zone has 59 positive cases. Of those, the County of Vermilion River has two cases that have been present since March 22, (at that time only 10 were present in the Central Zone). To keep those numbers low, Hinshaw recommends continued social distancing and hand washing practices.

For those looking to follow recommendations from the province and continue practicing social distancing, Long’s Value Drug Mart offers free delivery within the Town of Vermilion. They also deliver to Mannville once per week, and noted that exceptions can be made.

Customers unable to leave their residence due to self quarantine are able to order any products sold in store. To place an order you can call 780-8535316 from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. (until 7p.m. on Thursdays), but mornings are the recommended time.

“If you require a delivery a credit card has to be given at the time the order is placed, the items will be charged to the credit card. The delivery will be made to your front step. We want to limit as much person to person contact as possible when deliveries are made,” said owner, Jason Long.

He went on to say that people should

minimize close contact with others in order to help prevent COVID-19. He suggested that people should alter their daily routines by avoiding crowded p l ac e s a n d n o n - e s s e nt i a l g at h erings, avoiding common greetings such as handshakes, limiting contact with people at higher risk (e.g. older adults and those in poor health), and by keeping a distance of at least two arms lengths (approximately two metres) from others, as much as possible. “ We would like to send a special thank you to the staff working through the COVID-19 crisis. We are here to suppor t you and are commit ted to making sure we can serve you in the safest way possible,” said Long.

He went on to remind customers to respect all staff in the store by practicing social distancing and not entering the store if you have a fever and/or new onset of cough or difficulty breathing, and in the 14 days before symptom onset, you have: been outside the coun-

try, or you have been in contact with a with a person with acute respiratory confirmed or probable case of COVID- illness who has been to a COVID-19 19, or you have been in close contact impacted area.

While we are all staying at home, we have more time to cook good wholesome food. I know someone slightly overweight that in the last three weeks lost 15 pounds and resolved their acid reflux problem, by eliminating eating out, and eating home cooking instead.

No diet, just mostly good home cooking. I also am aware of so many people that have lost their jobs, and businesses that have no income. While there are shortages of certain grocery items, there is still a good selection.

Be sure to plan your meals for 1 – 2 weeks before shopping, to reduce shopping trips.

Here is a very filling recipe that will feed lots of people, with minimal cost. It is a great way to stretch a pound of ground meat, it can be beef, moose, or ground chicken. It is filled with lots of vegetables and all their benefits.

Both cabbage and onions have major health benefits. Research has shown that compounds in cabbage are converted to isothiocyanates that provide protection in our bodies from breast, bladder, prostate and colon cancer. A University of Otago study in New Zealand found that the isothiocyanates in cruciferous vegetable such as cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts and cauliflower can even cause cancer cells to destruct.

A study in Poland found that women that consumed 4 servings a week of cabbage had significantly lower breast cancer rates than women who consumed only one serving a week. Regularly eating raw or lightly steamed cabbage helps lower cholesterol.

Cabbage is rich in antioxidants and exhibits anti-inflammatory properties in our bodies.

Cabbage juice aids in the healing of stomach ulcers and improves digestive health.

While we don’t usually think of cabbage as a source of vitamin C, it is interesting to note that 1 cup of cabbage provides 50 % of the daily recommended value of vitamin

C and 91% of DRV of vitamin K. Amazingly cabbage also has omega 3 in the form of alpha linolenic acid. Cabbage scores low on the glycemic index, is low in carbohydrate and is a good choice to prevent blood sugar spikes. Cabbage has only 33 calories per cup, making it a perfect diet food that is packed with healthy vitamins. Red cabbage is a nutrient powerhouse with 6 to 8 times more antioxidant abilities than green cabbage. Onions are a natural source of querctin and chromium, which both assist in blood sugar control. Onions like garlic contain sulfur compounds that work to detox our bodies by binding to heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium and then escorting them out of the body.

Tomatoes contain many important vitamins and antioxidants including lots of lycopene, vitamin C and vitamin A. Lycopene is what gives the tomato its red color.

Lycopene helps prevent prostate, lung and

1 tablespoon dill weed 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 4 cups sliced cabbage 3 more cups of water Fry the hamburger until cooked and then add the chopped onion, and cook until the bottom of the pot starts to caramelize and brown. Add 4 cups of water and stir to the bottom of the pot to bring up the caramelization, to create a beef and onion broth.

Add in all the remaining ingredients except the cabbage. Cook for 15 minutes, add the cabbage and the additional 3 cups of water, and cook until cabbage is softened, the rice and carrots are cooked. Taste, and add any additional seasoning.

Born on July 21, 1943 in Vermilion, Bill Flett would begin his journey to the professional ranks of hockey players when he started playing junior hockey for the Melville Millionaires of the SJHL. Beginning in 1963, he would play for teams in the AHL, EHL, WHL and CPHL through to 1967. It was in that year that the NHL expanded from six to 12 teams and he was picked up by the Los Angeles Kings in the draft.

In his rookie season, he began to play right wing and scored 26 goals. That goal total would get him the honour of being named the NHL West Division Rookie of the Year 3” wide version by the Sporting News.

Hello at the Voice!

I just want to thank you for this week ’s e d it i o n, t hat had so m e familiar faces of people I’ve known, showing words that often heard, from growing up. If I could I would give them a hug…because that is just what I do.Maybe I’ve been cooped in my office working from home for the last 3 weeks wishing I could just take a drive that direction.

I wasn’t around for the Great Depression, or WW2, or the Polio outbreak…but I got to hear a lot of those words of wisdom acquired from people that lived through those times and now that we’ve come to a time like they experienced…I feel a tremendous amount of gratitude for having their shared experience be

part of what prepared me for what is happening now. They gave me that mental preparation that yes…you can endure. Those times do exist and they do come…but you can make it through.

It perhaps isn’t as easy to live a life where you are constantly preparing or putting something aside for the bad times…but you sure find yourself better surviving them. I always felt those tighter bonds of community expressed tangibly with those prior generations because t h ey n e e d e d it to pull t hro u g h them together…and they remained honoring that to each other (for the most part)…it changed them and made them who they are now.

Maybe…hopefully…some of the generations that didn’t hear those

messages and see or experience that quite so much will figure it out, see it continually expressed and we will all be better because of it.

Great pressure can crush something into dust…but great pressure can also make a diamond. Choose to be the diamond. Maybe that can be my ‘positive advice’.

Here is to all the staf f of the Voice and all my hometown remaining healthy and well and hoping we all have the opportunity down the line soon to have a chat about life, and maybe tell the next generation our current experience once or twice. Honestly wishing Dad was still around so I could hear some of his stories again. He’d be going on and on for days…

That said, we also enjoy installing pieces clients have chosen on their own as there is always a form of creativity in the process.

Freshening up your home for spring can be as simple as cleaning and opening your windows, rearranging your furniture to space things out a bit from the coziness of winter, and organizing a delivery of fresh blooms, greenery, or a potted plant from your local florist. I enjoy responsibly foraging in nature for some of my decor, and springtime offers blooming branches.

In our current climate, perhaps your backyard or a friend’s cattle pasture can offer something interesting as you don’t need many - one or two taller stems with a bit of water in a vase looks great on a table or countertop.

With many people currently working from home, we suggest looking at your entire space with fresh eyes. Can you move a piece here or there to create a spot in which to work. Any size of space can be made your own. Think about your personal style and preferences and add touches of these to your space. For example, if you enjoy the effects of natural daylight, set up your desk near a window. Tape an inspirational note to your wall. Surround yourself with items that give you whatever feeling you would like to have when you sit in your space, be it books, a plant, a photo, or nothing at all because you are the type of person who prefers a clean table with only your laptop and a notepad. The key is to make it comfortable and welcoming for yourself.

In any design project we generally begin

by asking clients a series of questions to determine how they live. As we are currently living in unprecedented times, our homes are potentially being used for more hours than what may be typical, with all types of activities happening simultaneously each day. What we suggest is to have honest communication with each family member about needs, wants, and expectations for work, playtime, and relaxation during this situation. Is there room in the living space as a whole to create designated zones for each type of activity? Is it possible to complete and clean up each activity before you move to the next? Can you set a time to tidy which signals that it’s time to relax?

Is everyone’s schedule the same or can one parent take time to read a book or go for a walk while the other parent attends to children or chores? Each family will have their own set of routines and be able to sort what works best for each member of that family. And of course spring and hopefully some warmer weather will help to remove pressure from our indoor habitat being our primary living, working, and playing space.

There are many small projects which people can do on their own with what they have on hand. It’s almost the season for spring cleaning and that means putting away winter gear and tidying drawers and closets too. Paint some stripes down a hallway with the almost-full can you have in the garage. Look through photos and artwork and replace what is in existing

frames or tape new bits to a wall. The internet is a great tool to source ideas on creating new art, crafting, or fun home projects and activities that kids can also be involved in. Even a simple rearrangement of the existing items you have can make a big impact on your space feeling new without you needing to purchase anything. Par ti c ipants prepared a por trait sketch and had the opportunity to use any opaque medium of their choosing.

Meagan Balaneski led the session and said, “I believe that art is really good for mental health and a sense of connection. It helps you tap into an

area of pure creativity, and completely disconnect from the stresses of the moment. It ’s also a really low- cost activity to get into.”

It is becoming increasingly important for people to keep engaged and find ways to interact in positive creative outlets. Throughout the session she continued to offer tips.

AHS Partners With Spartan Bioscience To Enable Rapid Testing For COVID-19

Edmonton – Alber tans will soon have faster, more convenient access to COVID-19 testing through a new partnership between Alberta Health Services (AHS) and a Canadian technology company.

Spar tan Bioscience Inc. is in the late stages of developing an innovative handheld, rapid-testing device for COVID-19, which can confirm test results for the virus in less than one hour. The technology is expected to help AHS provide additional, more expedient testing for COVID -19 in rural and remote communities, such as Indigenous communities, by eliminating the need for lab samples to travel to the nearest lab, which can be a logistical challenge.

As part of the $9.5-million contract, AHS will receive 250 handheld devices, along with 10 0,0 0 0 testing kits, to be distributed to healthcare facilities outside of Calgary and Edmonton. The first shipment of devices and testing kits arrives next month.

Health Canada is expected to approve the use of the rapid test kits within a few weeks. AHS will validate test protocols and accuracy before the new technology is deployed, but has acted quickly to ensure the test kits are available in the province once approval is received.

“Alberta has been one of the fastest jurisdictions in the world for testing of COVID-19. However, the threat to the health of all Albertans remains.

We have recognized a gap in our testing and I am pleased AHS is working swiftly with industry to find ways to ensure rapid testing for the virus is accessible for people in rural and r e m o t e c o m m u n i t i e s ,” s ay s Ty l e r Shandro, Minister of Health.

“This investment will ensure we can maintain our rapid pace in testing and alleviate pressures on our front-line workers with quick result confirmations.”

The technology will be used in addition to AHS’ current lab testing and will be augmented in areas where access to major labs can be an issue.

“ C OV I D -19 p l a c e s s i g n i f i c a n t l y increased demand on our lab capacit y,” says AHS President and CEO Dr. Ver na Yiu. “ This new te c hnol ogy will supplement our current testing effor ts and give AHS the ability to provide timely testing and results to more Alber tans in more communities. This will help guide appropriate care and isolation, speed up our contact tracing, and reduce the risk of further spread.”

April 3, - Kitscoty, Alta. - On March 26, at approximately 4:50 p.m., Kitscoty RCMP responded to a report that a truck had been stolen out of the City of Lloydminster and was travelling northbound out of the city.

A Kitscoty RCMP member observed

April 2, 2020 - Vermilion, Alta - Vermilion RCMP are investigating a commercial break and enter where two service trucks were stolen, overnight. At 0230 A.M. three suspects entered a business compound in the town of Vermilion. The suspects gained access to the shop and left the scene with two 2009 white GMC Sierra service trucks.

School Of Agricultural Sciences Dean Wins Dairy Award

March 30, - (Vermilion, Alta.) Lakeland College is pleased to share that Josie Van Lent was honoured with the John J Kennelly Western Canadian Dairy Seminar Award of Merit. The award was presented to Van Lent, dean of the School of Agricultural Sciences, at the Western Canadian Dairy Seminar in Red Deer, Alta., on March 11, 2020.

The award is given annually to recognize a substantial contribution to the western Canadian dairy industry in the areas of education, training or technology transfer. The award is presented at the Western Canadian Dairy Seminar, a gathering of dairy producers, technology transfer specialists, researchers and dairy service representatives to discuss emerging issues and recent research.

Van Lent has been a key figure in Lakeland’s involvement in the dairy industry since she joined the college in 2007.

“I’m humbled and honoured by this award,” Van Lent says. “Our partnership with the dairy industry is so important to the work we do at Lakeland, and receiving any sort of recognition for it is just validation that we are meeting the needs of this amazing industry. None of it would

be possible without the contributions of all the people I work with, and I share this honour with them. I would like to especially acknowledge our dairy team, including students, faculty, and farm staff, and our associate dean, Geoff Brown, who has provided great support to that team.

I also share this award with Alberta Milk, their board of directors, their research and extension committee and people like Mike Slomp. The industry is strategic and focused and so easy to work with.”

Van Lent also acknowledges the University of Alberta dairy faculty and staff and the University of Calgary’s Veterinarian Medicine School faculty for their support and mentorship on dairy research.

Van Lent’s leadership was vital to the construction of the Dairy Learning Centre that opened at the Vermilion campus in 2017 and expanded the student-managed learning concept at the college. The facility reflects the highest industry standards and features state-of-the-art technology in robotic and conventional milking and feeding systems. With these systems, animal science technology students in the dairy major delve into what it takes to lead in the dairy industry.

With guidance from faculty and farm staff, the Dairy Student-Managed Farm

- Powered by New Holland manages a herd of 320 dairy animals with the goal of improving the production, health and longevity of the herd through genetic advancements. They are involved with breeding cows, moving heifers, monthly herd health visits by the vet, milking, regu-

lar nutritional consultant visits and hoof trimming. At the end of the academic year, the SMF unit shares its real-world results.

Van Lent was also an important figure in establishing a partnership with Alberta Milk, who have presented Lakeland with eight Milk Quality awards to date.

Shannon Stubbs Call For Immediate Action To Support Energy Workers

Submitted April 3, - Two Hills, AB – Today, Shannon Stubbs, Conservative Shadow Minister for Natural Resources and MP for Lakeland, urged the Liberal government to deliver support for Canadian energy workers and businesses, and suggested immediate actions they could take: “Canadian oil and gas workers are being particularly hard hit by this crisis. Finance Minister Bill Morneau told Parliament one week ago that the federal government would announce financial tools to help small and medium energy producers in a matter of ‘hours or days,’ and ‘not weeks.’ Nine days later, Canadian energy workers are still waiting for the government to provide this desperately needed help.

“Businesses are worried about how they will survive, and many have already had to lay off workers. Every day without action puts jobs permanently at risk. Rural and remote communities and Indigenous businesses – where resource development is the primary source of jobs – are feeling the immediate impact of this crisis the hardest.

“Oil and gas employers were struggling before the COVID-19 crisis. Weakened by hostile federal policies and legislation, and compounded by external factors since 2015, the human consequences of these attacks on Canadian energy have been devastating: 200,000 jobs lost and $200 billion in cancelled projects. Since March 7th, energy

companies trimmed $8.5 billion dollars in planned spending in Canada this year. The active drilling rigs count dropped by more than half this week, to only 42, down from 260 in February. This equates to job losses of 4,360 direct jobs and 33,790 indirect job losses – and that is just the drilling sector.

“Even the Finance Minister acknowledges that the energy sector is disproportionately affected by the current health and economic crisis. Government must act with two aims in mind: emergency measures to secure the short-term survival of energy employers and workers, and longer-term measures that will ensure the sector’s recovery and future growth in Canada.

“The government should focus on measures that achieve these primary objectives: tools that increase liquidity, with particular focus on small and medium size operators; improve competitiveness by reducing costs, cutting red tape, and providing certainty for investment and proponents; increase and diversify market access while working towards domestic Canadian energy supply and security by completing and adding new pipeline capacity; and sustain employment – both maintaining existing jobs and getting people back to work.

“Conservatives urge the government to finalize and release their action plan to help energy workers and the oil and gas sector.

They should: 1. Deliver on their promise to provide

financial tools to increase liquidity and to recapitalize small and medium oil and gas employers, including credit facilities such as loan guarantees and accounts receivable insurance.

2. Reduce costs by cancelling the carbon tax - Canada is the only one of the world’s top ten oil producers with a carbon tax which is an added cost and barrier to investment, and makes life less affordable for all Canadians; and immediately put on hold plans for the globally unprecedented Liberal fuel standard that also applies to natural gas and industrial buildings and will hike costs on refining, trucking, manufacturing and ultimately consumers.

3. Encourage investment in Canada by working with regulators to speed-up assessments for the twenty-billion dollars’ worth of oil and gas projects in the queue, including the Énergie Saguenay LNG plant in Quebec, while maintaining the evidence and sciencebased approach with the highest standards for which Canada is renowned.

4. Provide regulatory certainty by committing to overhaul Bill C-69, and immediately adopt all the Senate amendments that were supported by the private sector and all provincial and territorial leaders.

5. Expand access to export markets and get pipelines built by committing to use every federal tool to expedite construction of the Trans Mountain Expansion – its completion is now an economic emergency; work

with the proponents and the United States to advance the Keystone XL and Line 3 replacement pipelines; repeal C-48, the oil shipping ban, and work with proponents to set the conditions for a dedicated export pipeline to the growing Asia Pacific markets, and for a west to east cross country pipeline to secure domestic supply and export to Europe.

“The tens of thousands of Canadians in the energy sector who are out of work or will be laid off shortly are depending on this Liberal government to act now - otherwise they will not have a job to return to.

No measure should be taken off the table.

During these unprecedented times Canadians are counting on the government now more than ever to step up.

“A week ago, the Finance Minister said the Liberals would announce a package for Canada’s energy sector, in ‘hours’ or ‘days,’ certainly ‘not weeks.’ Canadians need them to do so, now.

“Make no mistake, this is not just an Alberta or Saskatchewan problem - it is a Canadian problem. Oil and gas singlehandedly accounts for 11% of Canada’s GDP. Energy is Canada’s leading export, and biggest private sector investor in the Canadian economy. A thriving energy sector helped Canada weather the Financial Crisis of 2008-09, and it will be no less important to helping us recover from the hard times ahead, but only if the government acts now.”

During the Pandemic we are in please follow the guidelines of those in authority as closely as possible and take care of yourself; emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually. If we reach out to each other we will be strong together.

Think You Have A Closed Herd? Think Again

A surprising proportion of producers believe they run a closed herd. The 2017 Western Canadian Cow-Calf Survey requested reasons why certain management practices were not employed on individual operations. Out of the approximately 25% of respondents who did not vaccinate their cows and heifers against reproductive diseases such as IBR and BVD, over half of those reported that their

reason for forgoing those vaccinations was because they had a closed herd.

Similarly, over 20% of respondents did not vaccinate their calves against respiratory disease (BRD), and 30% of those indicated having a closed herd was their main reason for not vaccinating.

This high rate of mistaken belief in having a closed herd is not just a Canadian phenomenon. A 2019 UK survey of almost 1000 producers indicated that over half of those who stated they ran a closed herd had purchased cattle within the past two years. According to the US Department of Agriculture’s National Animal

Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) 2007-08 survey, over 88% of operations with 50 head or more brought new cattle onto their operations in the past three years.Often a closed herd is simply interpreted as just being closed genetically, where replacements and clean up bulls are all home raised, artificial insemination is the main breeding method if new genetics are desired, and non-home raised cattle never enter the operation. But like most things, it’s a little more complicated than that.

A truly closed herd will not only eliminate the introduction of non-home raised cattle, but also eliminate as many sources of disease transmission as possible. A closed herd will have no contact (even

fenceline) with any other livestock or wildlife and will limit visitor/service provider access to areas where cattle are never present. In a closed herd, non-home raised animals (even horses, dogs) never set foot on the ranch and any animal that leaves home never comes back. All personnel, visitors, and service providers are following extraordinarily strict biosecurity measures – almost exactly like those implemented in the swine and poultry industries.

You either have a closed herd or you don’t. Just like there is no such thing as “sort of pregnant,” there is no such thing as a “pretty closed herd,” or a “mostly closed herd.” Those herds are open.

Continued from page 18 While a closed herd is optimal from a biosecurity standpoint because it’s difficult to introduce disease to a completely isolated population, it certainly doesn’t mean you are home free as far as vaccination is concerned. Let’s face it, fences break, gates get left open, and some cattle just seem bound and determined to end up places they’re not supposed to be. This can be devastating in a naïve herd that hasn’t been exposed to disease through prior exposure or vaccination.

Closed herds are often tricky to maintain in practice, being more labour and cost intensive, and they may also carry certain risks of amplifying recessive genetic conditions or reducing productivity through inbreeding if not managed carefully.

Have you: • Bought replacement open or bred heifers? Bred or open cows? Pairs?

• Bought an orphan calf?

• Bought a nurse cow?

• Bought or leased bulls?

• Bought or borrowed colostrum?

• Used clean-up bulls you didn’t raise after AI season?

• Calved out some of the neighbour’s cows on your place, with your cows?

• Bought feeder or backgrounder cattle that could potentially mingle, even accidentally, with the main herd?

• Taken cattle, sheep or horses to a show and turned them out with the herd immediately after coming home?

• Utilized a community pasture, shared a grazing lease or other pasture with other producers?

• Shared fencelines with a neighbour?

Water sources?

• Taken an animal to a vet clinic and brought it back home only to immediately turn it out with the other cattle after treatment?

• Shared a trailer? Had someone haul cattle for you without a thorough cleaning and disinfection of their trailer? Hauled cattle for someone without a thorough cleaning and disinfection of your trailer?

• Had an unsold animal returned to your place from an auction market or consignment sale?

• Had an animal jump the fence, or a neighbour’s animal end up on your place?

• Had a herd of deer, elk or other wildlife in with your cattle? In your feed storage areas?

• Mingled different types of livestock in the same area (e.g. cows and sheep)?

• Used your own horses at a neighbour’s branding or roundup, brought them back home, and turned them out with the cattle? Allowed neighbours to use their horses at your branding/roundup?

• Allowed service providers (vets, nutritionists, feed trucks, etc.) or oil and gas traffic access to your operation without a full disinfection protocol?

• Purchased used equipment and operated it without thoroughly disinfecting it?

• Hosted a branding or get together at your place without a clothes change & boot disinfection protocol?

• Toured visitors through your herd without a clothes change & boot disinfection protocol?

• Visited another farm, auction market,

show, sale or other event where cattle are present without a clothes change & boot disinfection protocol once you got back home?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you do not have a closed herd.

It is open.

Even without running a closed herd, there are easy and practical things producers can do to limit the risk of disease spread. Vaccination and implementing basic biosecurity protocols (e.g. quarantines, boot washes, etc.) are the most important of these. Production surveys across Canada indicate that bulls are an under-vaccinated class of cattle, with only about 50% of bulls receiving any vaccina-

tions. More attention should be focused on keeping bull vaccinations current.

This article may ruffle a few feathers, as the idea of a “closed herd” or “oneiron herd” (a term often heard in southern Alberta, meaning that the all the cattle on a particular ranch only have one brand) is often a point of pride for producers.

I recently heard a veterinarian say during a presentation that closed herds are like unicorns, often talked about but seldom seen. A horse that has a cone strapped to its head is still just a horse.

“CropChoice$ is a crop planning and risk management decisionmaking tool that can manage grains, oilseeds, pulses, specialty and forage crops to provide better crop planning decisions,” explains Manglai, production cro ps e c onomist with Alber ta Agriculture and Forestry (AF).
