A Citizenship Ceremony was hosted at the Lloydminster Centennial Civic Centre by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada – Edmonton Office, and the City of Lloydminster on March 12.

There were 126 candidates for citizenship from 34 countries, and as they entered they received video greetings from Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau.

People from Eastern Alberta and Western Saskatchewan participated, including one from Mannville and two from Vermilion.

As the ceremony began Clerk, Joanne, welcomed everyone; and piper, Brett Rowan, led dignitaries to the stage. MLA

Garth Rowswell, Mayor Gerald Aalbers, Doreen McCaw - Lloydminster Learning Council, Kemoh Mansaray - Lloydminster Local Immigration Partnership, and Victor Juba - recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee Medals and longstanding member of the Lloydminster community were among the special guests. A traditional greeting and Indigenous blessing were given by Elder, Doris Stanley.

Presiding Official, Cesarie, said “Being a Canadian means more than having a piece of paper; it is sharing a common set of values, having rights and responsibilities, and being part of a family. You can now participate politically by voting in provincial or federal elections, or run in those elections.

From the first inhabitants to the generations of newcomers, Canada has welcomed people for many years. As you become citizens, think about what you have achieved in the past and look towards the future. Take the oath to heart, and affirm your commitment to Canada.”

After repeating the oath in unison, they were congratulated on becoming new citizens. New citizens received their certificates and signed the oath of citizens.

MLA Garth Rowswell said, “Good afternoon my fellow Canadians; it’s a great privilege to be here today. I can imagine the difficulties many of you have faced to get here. This country offers advantages, freedoms, and opportunities that few others do - the ability to change the

trajectory of your family in one generation.

We welcome you, and ask that you take care of Canada; be good to her.”

“Congratulations on becoming Canada’s newest citizens!” said Mayor Gerald Aalbers.

The Presiding Official went on to say, “Today we have much to be proud of. Each of you are different and have a unique talent that can enrich this country.”

New citizens and guests went on to join in the singing of “O’Canada,” led by Donny Mariano and Rufy Guron. They later enjoyed refreshments, visiting, and taking photographs with dignitaries. Overall, everyone enjoyed the celebration and was pleased to have the opportunity to welcome the new citizens.

Cornerstone Co-op hosted a Brand Day at the Vermilion Regional Centre on March 11.

General Manager, Graham Getz, welcomed everyone, and staff went on to enjoy a Co-op meal and several draws with Co-op Pure label goods.

Keynote speaker, Darci Lang, has been engaging audiences for the past 26 years.

She drew the attention of the audience in Vermilion by speaking about her book, ‘Focus on the 90%.’

Wow, what a week it has been. The World Health Organization has declared the corona virus, c a l l e d C OVID -19 a pandemic. The unprecedented cancelation of the NBA, the NHL and Major League Baseball has caused us all to take serious note. Everything from concerts, conventions, trade shows to children’s hockey has been cancelled.

It all has happened so fast. While we wait for a pipeline to be built, the price of oil has dropped to new unexpected lows and with it the stock market.

Supply chains to many businesses are being strangled, as is their cash flow.

The situation has left us feeling uneasy and uncertain.

Many people in Alberta are getting prepared in case they will have to deal with the COVID -19 virus. It is hard to know when or for how long to be prepared for; when you look at countries like China and Italy, it has already been a long time for them. People that live in towns can probably order groceries for delivery, but if you live in the country, you will need to have a few supplies on hand, including drinking water. In the event that you need something delivered, it would be good to have room on your credit card or have some cash.

I noticed that when I recently went to buy groceries there are empty shelves for coveted items such as toilet paper, hand sanitizer, Lysol wipes and flour.

When deciding what to buy, try to think about what you might need if you were to be quarantined to your home for up to three weeks, including regular prescription medications. Make out a menu plan for three weeks, that is made up of super easy to prepare meals.

If you have extreme fatigue, it will be hard to have the energy to do much cooking, so think easy. Also add in any supplements such as a good multi vitamin, extra vitamin C, cough syrup

and any other flu aids such as elderberry syrup, which is anti-viral. Since no one knows if or when we may have to deal with a quarantine, select foods that can be stored without spoilage. I included frozen orange juice, because it will keep with out spoiling longer than fresh orange juice. In addition to planning for food, also think about cleaning supplies, garbage bags, laundry soap and paper towels.

One impor tant line of defence to help prevent getting the virus is hand washing. Hand washing should be 20 seconds long before rinsing. Avoid touching the face, eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer for your hands when soap and water are not available, but make soap and water as your first choice. To be effective the alcohol content of the hand sanitizer should be at least 60 percent. The virus will live on hard smooth surfaces longer than absorbent ones so wipe down surfaces as needed. Be sure to remove your shoes at your entr y to keep the virus off your floor and out of your home. I have seen many people spit outside, and that is something that we may walk on. Health authorities are urging people when coughing or sneezing, to do it into a tissue, or into

your sleeve. Wash your hands after blowing your nose.

Symptoms of COVID-19 may be like typical flu symptoms, fever, dry cough, fatigue, and sputum production. Other potential symptoms may be shortness of breath, muscle pain, joint pain, headache, chills, nausea, vomiting, nasal congestion or diarrhea. Some people will get the virus and show no symptoms. If anyone is experiencing symptoms, they are asked to stay home and not go to the hospital without calling first, and alternately to call 811, for info, advice and a testing kit for the virus.

The main way that COVID-19 has come into the province is through travelers. If you have traveled you may choose to self isolate for a period to help prevent the spread.

At Christmas time I dealt with a nasty flu that turned into pneumonia, that kept me down for about a month. There was a lot of coughing, which I found relief from with a hot chocolate that I made with 1 tablespoon cocoa powder, hot water, full fat canned coconut milk and unpasteurized honey to taste. It was the one thing that really helped me to stop coughing for a while. Coconut has the benefit of being anti viral and cocoa calms the vagus nerve, which is a trigger often to excess coughing.

The Vermilion School Of Agriculture ing was provided at a multi-use building for the very first time. This building featured dorms, a cafeteria, administration offices and a gym. It would continue to serve that purpose until 1985, when it was unfortunately destroyed in a fire.

The school would serve as a focal point for meetings as well. The first meeting of the Vermilion Inspectorate Education Association would be held at the school on Nov. 2 and Nov. 3, 1922 for example. The school would also serve

as the location of many teacher conventions. In 1940, the Vegreville School Division, the Wainwright School Division and the Vermilion School Division would hold their convention at the school. One reason that conventions were often held at the school, for many organizations, was the fact that there was housing there for all the delegates.

The college would continue to operate, taking a break during the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918, followed by closing

Long before it was Lakeland College, one of the most prominent agricultural schools in the province was called the Vermilion School of Agriculture.

The origins of the school go back to 1912 when Duncan Marshall, the Minister of Agriculture for the province, announced that there would be three agricultural schools in the province.

One in Olds, which still operates, one in Claresholm, which was shut down in the 1920s, and the Vermilion School of Agriculture.

Construction would begin quickly and

by Nov. 17, 1913, the doors of the school were ready to open. The first class would be a large one but would shrink quickly as the First World War erupted and students began to enlist, shrinking the class size.

T h e f ir s t c l a s s e s at t h e s c h o o l consisted of two programs. The women at the school would receive instruction on home economics, while the men would receive an education that included animal husbandry, crop production, agronomy, mathematics, agricultural mechanics, knot typing, chicken plucking, English and carpentry.

The original school building included walk-out basement doors that allowed livestock, cattle and horses to be brought in. This old school would operate as the Vermilion School of Agriculture until 1960 when the Bentley Building was used due to an increase in needs for classroom space.

For the first students, tuition was free but it was up to the students to find their own accommodation and pay for it. Many would live in Vermilion itself. In 1928, things changed when on-campus hous- Vermilion School of Agriculture first class. photo submitted

for the winter of 1933-34, and then closing one more time at the outbreak of the Second World War. It would reopen soon after but in a different capacity as it was now the Canadian Women’s Army Corps training centre.

It would continue to operate as an agricultural college after that, providing Alberta with a streamline of new farmers for decades to come.

COVID-19 Coronavirus Info For Albertans

Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw issued the following statement for Albertans on March 15: As the Premier noted, I have recommended that aggressive new public h e a l t h m e a s ure s b e i m p l e m e nte d across the province.

“Here in Alberta, we have confirmed 17 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours.

“This means that 56 cases have now been identified in our province. Two of the individuals are receiving treatment in hospital and are in stable condition.

The other 15 cases are self-isolating at home and expected to make a full recovery. As always, health officials have taken swift action to isolate these individuals and any close contacts who may be at risk.

“However, there are several concerning elements in these new cases.

“Our investigation has determined that seven of these cases stem from a single gathering that took place in Calgary Zone. This underlines the fact that gatherings can accelerate spread of the virus. In addition, at least two of our new cases within the last two days appear to have been acquired from an unknown source. This means we are likely seeing community transmission in Alberta.

“Community transmission is when a person catches the virus from someone who stayed in the province, and not from someone who recently travelled.

“Until now, all cases in Alberta had been travel related.

“These two cases mean that there are other cases in the community that we have not identified, increasing the likelihood that Albertans may be exposed within their communities.

“In addition, another development ove r t h e p a s t t wo d ays h a s b e e n conversations that I have been invited to participate in with school leaders from across the province. I have heard clearly from them that the guidance

provided by Health is proving extremely difficult to put into practice at the front lines, due to product shortages, challenges with staffing, and other operational issues.

“I have repeatedly said that we will monitor developments, assess the emerging evidence, and take action accordingly. Based on what we’ve seen over the last two days, it is clear that now is the time for additional action.

We need to put in place more restrictions to help slow the virus and protect public health.

“That is why, effective immediately, the Emergency Management Cabinet Committee has approved my recommendation that students no longer at tend classes in schools or postsecondar y institutions until fur ther notice.

“All regularly scheduled classes are cancelled, regardless of class size. We are also asking all licensed childcare facilities and out-of-school care programs to close immediately.

Approved day homes are exempt due to the small number of children they care for, but are encouraged to use enhanced sanitation practices.

“As a parent with children in the school system, and afterschool care programs, I recognize that this is very disruptive for many families and for these sectors.

“This is not a decision that we are making lightly.

“I made this recommendation after ex te n s i ve d i s c u s s i o n w i t h s c h o o l boards and in consideration of the cases of community transmission identified over the weekend. “ To be clear, we are not closing schools. Teachers and other school staff should continue to come to their schools to plan potential alternatives for students, particularly those in grade 12.

“I know many parents, child care workers, and teachers will have questions. This decision was made only a few hour s ag o, so many d et ails are being confirmed. We will provide answers and make sure that Albertans

get the information they need.

“Also effective today, we are recommending new restrictions for all longterm care and other continuing care facilities. I am advising that these facilities limit visitation to essential victors only at this time.

“Seniors and people with pre-existing health conditions are the most at risk from COVID-19. Special precautions must be taken to ensure the virus is not spread to these groups.

“I know that families want to visit their loved ones. This step is not taken lightly, but is essential to protect the lives of the most vulnerable Albertans.

“I’m encouraging families and friends of those in these facilities to think of other ways besides visiting that they can support and encourage their loved ones through this difficult time.

“Finally, while last week I announced that places of worship were exempt from the restrictions on mass gatherings, this recommendation is changing.

“This exemption last week was done to try to minimize the impact of these restrictions on the daily lives of Albertans, and in the context of having only travel-related cases identified in the province. However, as I mentioned earlier, that has changed and we now have evidence that community transmission is occurring.

“Effective immediately, all places of worship are now being asked to follow the same restrictions being placed on other gatherings in the province.

“All mass gatherings of 250 people or more should be cancelled. Any event that has more than 50 attendees and expects to have international participants, or involves critical infrastructure staff, seniors, or other high-risk populations, should also be cancelled.

“Events that do not meet these criteria can proceed at this time, but risk mitigation must be in place, such as enforcing distancing of 1-to-2 metres between attendees, ensuring that ill attendees do not attend, and using sanitizer stations.

Wainwright, Alta. – On March 10, 2020 at approximately 7:15 a.m., Wainwright RCMP responded to a report of injured male at a convenience store in Wainwright on 10 Street.

Police arrived and located an adult male victim with serious non-life threatening injuries. The victim was transported by EMS to

an Edmonton hospital.

It is alleged that the victim was hit with an hatchet by another patron while in the store after verbal exchange had taken place.

Police located the suspect male in the area and arrested him without incident. A hatchet was also seized. No one else was injured.

NEW PARENTS? HERE ARE 5 TIPS FOR DEALING WITH STRESS (NC) As joyful as having a new baby can be, it also has its challenges. Lack of sleep and a demanding schedule can leave you feeling worn out. One important way to help protect yourself from emotional fatigue is practicing self-care.

“Becoming a parent is a time of intense transition,” Katie Turner, a Registered Psychologist, says. “Our identities, roles and relationships often go through a period of massive upheaval and change. It is important to be compassionate with yourself, to adjust your expectations and to make time for self-care.”

Here are 5 top self-care tips for new parents: 1. Create a postpartum plan: It can be helpful to think about those first 3 months as the 4th trimester. Newborns sleep and feeding schedules are intense and demanding. Plan for what will best support you and your family during this time. Let friends and family know how they can best support you. Be loving, yet firm and direct with your boundaries. This can range from when you would like visitors to what type of support is most helpful (and what is not so helpful).

2. Adjust your expectations of yourself: Focus on bonding and caring for your new baby. Allow time for your family to adjust and make sure you’re getting enough rest, sleep, nutrition and recovery time. Focus on your self-care essentials and let go of expectations to have everything else done. It is not a time to worry about entertaining others or having a spotless house.

3. Stay connected: Take time for family and friends and meet other new parents with similar aged children. Schedule time to connect with family and friends, and be flexible in planning social activities. This might mean asking people to come to you. Or you can have a phone or video chat date when it is hard to connect in person. It can also be helpful to build connections with other other new parents. Look for community programs and parenting groups to get out of the house and to connect with other parents.

4. Treat yourself: Do smalls things as a part of your self-care practice.

In the early weeks to months, self-care might be taking shower and brushing your teeth that day. When the baby gets older (and everyone is getting more sleep), self-care may be taking some “me” time.

You could get out with friends, go to a yoga class or even do something nice for yourself at home. For example, scheduling a virtual personal training session or taking a long bath.

5. Try to get your ducks in a row: To prevent stress as a new parent, try to get health information and resources organized as soon as possible. Ask friends, family or health care providers to recommend nearby perinatal supports for your baby, yourself and your relationship/family. It is a good idea to have a list of resources handy. You can use them if you run into any medical concerns or stressors as you transition into parenthood. This may include: • perinatal mental health supports • help with childcare or household tasks • sleep consultants • community support and social supports for new parents • breast/bottle feeding supports • recovery from labor and delivery (such as pelvic floor physiotherapists)

“Remember that we have evolved as a social species,” Turner says. “It is also essential to be open to receiving support as a part of your self-care plan during the postpartum period.”

An ideal distribution could be 70-20-10 with a condensed breeding season of three cycles (63 days).

On March 6, 52 grade one and two students participated in a winter adventure day at the Vermilion Provincial Park.

Mother Nature cooperated beautifully, the temperature was warm and the sun shone all day long. Our young Spartans had the opportunity to explore nature and learn in various ways that day. They all had the opportunity to take an educational winter walk in the park, go snowshoeing in the deep snow, crazy carpet, and try crosscountry skiing. The day also incorporated learning about past Inuit traditions, such as making snow goggles out of animal bones to help shade their eyes from the

sun, and learning some Inuit winter games.

Students made their own version of these snow goggles and had fun experimenting with games such as the “Back Push” and “Kneel Jump”. Everyone was exhausted after the day of exercise and fresh air. We’d like to say a big thank you to all of the parent volunteers that came out to help support the day and keep it running smoothly. Also, a big thank you to the parent members of the Vermilion Nordic Ski Club for lending us their children’s skis to use for the day.

Lastly, we are deeply grateful to Greg Smith, Peggy Moore, and Gary Walsh for sharing their time and expertise with our students, we could not have created such an amazing learning experience without your time, patience, and expertise.

Grade 1 students had a blast on their winter fun day on March 5. Students got to learn to cross country ski with Mrs. Page, snowshoe with Mr. Greg Smith, and toboggan.

Students enjoyed a hotdog, fruit, and hot chocolate lunch. A huge thanks to all of our parent volunteers. Without them, our day would not have been as successful.

All VES staff went to the new Irma School on March 6 to have our TES Team Day. Shelley Moore was our day long speaker. Her main topic of discussion was inclusion in the classroom. Purple Pinkie Project. For a donation, students and staff could have their pinkie finger dyed purple by members of our local Rotary Club. This project raises funds to try and eradicate polio from the planet! Elementary students worked hard to prepare their poems to recite for the in-class declamation presentations that took place this week.

Winners from each class were selected, and they will perform in the finale on March 19, at 1:00pm in the gymnasium.

We would like to thank some generous community members for their kind donations to our school. Thanks to Carla Anderson for donating skipping ropes for the children to use, and to Yvonne Hynek for the hand knit mittens. Because of your generosity, our students will have healthy hearts and warm hands this year.

On Thursday, March 19, in support of World Down Syndrome Day, St. Jerome Spartans are encouraged to wear brightly coloured socks, long socks, printed socks, or even 3 socks to represent the extra chromosome that people with down syndrome are born with.

Up and Coming Events: Elementary Report Cards go home March 19, with parent teacher interviews being held March 24 from 3:30-8:30pm. Elementary Declamation will be held in the gymnasium on March 19 at 1:00pm. Our next school Mass will be on March 25 at 10:30 am, all community members and family are welcome to join us. The grade 5-12 Ski Trip is on March 26. March 29 is the Grad Pancake Breakfast fundraiser. April 2 is the 2020-2021 Kindergarten Registration Night.

We hope you will stop by with your family and check out the selection of books from Pre-Kindergarten to Young Adult reads. The Fair also includes a variety of posters for $5.00 each, arts and crafts, diaries, and a number of small items for 50 cents to $2.50 including pencils, pens, bookmarks, erasers, sharpeners, etc. These items make great gifts or rewards for your children. There is sure to be Easter books as well. April 2 we will be open from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm, April 3 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and April 6 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Parent Teacher Interviews will be booked by teacher or parent request only for this round and held on April 2 from 4:30-8:00 pm. We will be sending a notice home with students to notify you if your child’s teacher is requesting an interview. This notice will also have instructions on how to access School Conference Manager online booking system to book an interview time that is most convenient for your family. If your

child’s teacher is not requesting to meet with you, but you wish to book an interview for your child we would be happy to meet with you.

But don’t toss your manual can opener or your old clothes just yet. As you’re sorting through your things, it’s a smart idea to know what goes into an emergency kit and start putting one together.

them. It prevents us from taking things for granted, and it helps train us to see more good things in life.

Here are some ways to be grateful: Keep a gratitude journal. Make it a habit to think about positive or good things you are grateful for daily, and write them down.

Reflect through mindfulness, meditation or relaxation. Take time to be still and calm and focus on the present moment. List those things you are grateful for—maybe

a sunny day, a hot shower, your home, a good friend, or a nice cup of tea.

Thank someone. Nurture your meaningful relationships. Send a thank-you card or leave a note to someone you are grateful to have in your life.

Give back. Return the kindness that someone has extended to you.

Practice small gestures. Sometimes all it takes is a smile, handshake or wave to express your thanks.

With each year’s growing conditions varying from the last, having a diverse forage mix ensures a more stable yield, but only if the forage mix is properly balanced to grow what’s desired.

On February 20, a group of concerned citizens spent the day on the phone to our MLA to let him know we were angry about what is happening in this Province.

The phone calls started at 9 am, and keep the phone lines tied up all day, effectively disrupting the normal activities of the office.

As a result Wainwright, Vermilion River MLA Mr. Garth Roswell responded by meeting with some of the group the following day.

They spoke about their concerns about cuts to Education. Education is the corner stone of any civilization and this government is slowly dismantling it by means of forcing “efficiencies” onto school boards.

Although the UCP claims it has not cut school board funding 428 million has been lost in cuts to school boards. UCP gave a 153 million grant, a drop in the bucket to

Across the province there is an estimated increase of 1300 more students, thus the already beleaguered school boards will be forced to cut funds and/or fundraise simply to maintain current levels.

We wonder how many boxes of chocolate almonds it will take to hire an Educational Assistant.

Deep cuts have been made to Universities and secondary schools resulting in layoffs have already occurred and students have been warned of high tuition cuts.

Yesterday, a notice went out to those carrying student debts of a 1% increase to their debts. This will undoubtedly result in more hardship for young families and undermine our children’s ability to access further education in an increasingly technology driven world.

Additionally the government is instituting performance based funding for universities

Some of the points we covered were: • Privatization. It appears that the UCP is bent on privatization rather than the public good. We pointed out that privatization can never be for the public good because it is health care driven strictly for profits.

• Elder care in Alberta should not be an industry. Again, the UPC are making it a business driven for profit not a service for vulnerable seniors.

• Health care for profit is wrong on every level. Our government was elected on promises of no cuts to education or health care. They need to be true to their word and we need to stand up, shout out and make them aware that we want honesty and integrity in our leaders and universality in our services.

We expressed our disappointment and displeasure with the overall direction this government is taking, by giving tax breaks to those who don’t need them and trying to balance the books on the backs of the most vulnerable, seniors, disabled and young families with children. We also were given assurances that the PUF program (Program unit Funding for children with disabilities) would not be affected. However when the budget came out PUF support has been cut. Funding for public school kindergarteners has been cut. Surprise! the Alberta’s private schools has been given three years extension.
