Participants travelled from Edmonton, Lloydminster, Kitscoty, and Vermilion.

Some race team members participated as well as some of the jackrabbit families who meet most Sunday afternoons for games and to practice technique. Historic $4 Million Gift Will Establish Bison Operation At Lakeland

Lakeland College Submitted

February 25, - (Vermilion, Alberta) Armin and Rita Mueller, owners of Canadian Rangeland Bison and Elk, are donating $4 million to Lakeland College to purchase land and establish a bison herd at the college.

The gift will strengthen Lakeland’s two-year animal science technology program at the Vermilion campus and provide more student-managed learning oppor tunities for people in the program’s livestock major. With the addition of a bison herd, Lakeland will become the only post-secondary institution in Canada where students, with mentorship from faculty, manage commercial-sized bison, beef, crop, dairy, and sheep enterprises.

Originally from Switzerland, Armin and Rita have lived near Bentley, Alta., for 40 years. They ran a successful dairy for 20 years and then transitioned to the bison industry in 2000. “I’ve had a lifelong fascination with bison. I love everything about them,” says Armin.

The Muellers’ belief in the importance of post-secondary education, combined with their interest in investing in the bison industry, resulted in their donation to Lakeland. Armin hopes having a herd and a bison production course at Lakeland will encourage more students to raise bison.

“For the students to learn more about bison and gain hands-on experience is going to be fascinating for them,” he

says. “It would be great if 10, 20 or 30 years down the road, we see a lot more bison in the fields again.”

Dr. Alice Wainwright-Stewart, Lakeland College’s president and CEO, thanked the Muellers for their historic gift. “ We’re honoured that Armin and Rita have chosen to suppor t Lakeland College and our students with this donation to Leading. Learning. The Lakeland Campaign. It’s the largest single gift Lakeland has ever received,” says Wainwright-Stewart. “I admire Armin’s passion for the bison industry and dedication to sustainable agricultural practices. I know Lakeland and our students will benefit from this visionary investment for years to come.”

Lakeland is currently celebrating the 30th anniversary of its StudentManaged Farm – Powered by New Holland (SMF). During the second year of the animal science technology program, students apply the theor y they learn in class to the manage ment of a purebred beef, commercial beef, dairy, sheep, equine or livestock research SMF unit. Because of the support from the Muellers, a new unit will be created that will incorporate bison into the SMF model.

“We’re thrilled to announce during our SMF 30th anniversary the addition of a bison herd and the development of another SMF unit,” says WainwrightStewart. “During the past five years,

enrolment in our animal science technology program has increased from 73 students to 163. Adding another SMF unit ensures students can be fully immersed in the management of a livestock enterprise which is key to them developing technical, business and soft skills they’ll use throughout their careers. Lakeland is in the process of purchasing land to establish a bison herd with the goal of offering the bison production course by September 2021.

Help the University of Guelph improve hearing healthcare across Canada.

Connect Hearing and Professor Mark Fenske at the University of Guelph are seeking participants who are over 50 years of age, have never worn hearing aids and have not had a hearing test in the last 24 months, for a hearing study that investigates factors that can influence better hearing.

Study Parameters The researchers will examine listening in a range of situations, from one-on-one, to group conversations, watching TV and wider social contexts like supermarkets and other noisy environments, and how it effects connection and socialization.

Why Participate?

It is estimated that 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have some degree of hearing loss, but most do not seek a solution right away. In this study you’ll be playing an important part in determining the key factors around identifying hearing loss and what influences the decision to seek treatment.

“I was honoured to be asked by Shelia; surprised as well. Photography is fun.

And it can be a challenge as well, which is why I’ve started doing macro and am hoping to take some night photography courses. I take lots of sports photos, but only have the pony racing in this exhibit. A lot of people associate me with sports, so this is showing I’m more than that,” said Wolters.

In her artist’s statement at the library, she went on to say the following: My parents didn’t realize what they unleased when they presented me with a Kodak Instamatic on my 11th birthday.

Those old prints tell a story of experimenting with angles and attempting to capture motion. A fascination with my Dad’s “real” camera with a light meter and slide film then slipped into using a 35mm camera for yearbook activities throughout junior and high school. Summer jobs at local weekly papers helped me hone the how to take photos as well as ways to take photos.

As much as all that practice was valuable, having my own camera allowed more trials with non-news photos. Wild flowers and using macro lens became the first of my specialities.

My beloved Canon AE-1 was a film camera. This meant a lot of happy and unhappy surprises when each roll was developed. Anyone who has only used digital doesn’t have an inkling how nerve wracking waiting for prints can be. Digital doesn’t have a waiting time, and touch ups are a lot less complicated on the screen than during processing.

As an avid sports fan it isn’t surprising that I’ve taken hundreds of thousands of sporting activities. At least 75% of them were of my nephews and nieces on the track, baseball field, various courts as well as curling and hockey ice.

Her exhibit also features photos of San Francisco, an Alsakan Cruise, Expo 86, Waterton Lakes National Park, architecture, a lake, powwows for action and colour, return to flowers, Vermilion Fair, Flickr, and her own photo cards.

“The hardest thing about the exhibit was choosing photos. I’m really happy with my San Francisco wall,” said Wolters.

Chocolate Brownies (The Best Ever)

Winter is a great time to turn the oven and bake. This recipe is a classic that has been around for over a century. The history of the one egg cake like brownie goes back over 115 years, and the 2 egg fudgy brownie recipe was developed 3 years later. I have been craving brownies and finally gave in recently, and it was totally worth it. They are moist, soft and a bit chewy with the wonderful fudgy brownie texture. Using real butter is preferred to margarine both for flavor and

to avoid the trans-fats that are often found in margarine. This recipe works very well for our altitude. You can stir in 3/4 cup of chocolate chips or chunks to create Triple Chocolate Fudge Brownies. What I really like about this recipe is that you only need one bowl (or pot) and it only takes about 5 minutes to have it oven ready. A little too easy perhaps.

Fudgy Chocolate Brownies 1/2 cup butter 1 cup sugar 1/3 cup cocoa powder 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 eggs 1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 cup all purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a glass mixing bowl melt/soften the butter in the microwave or if you don’t have a microwave use a medium size pot on a low heat on the stove. Stir in the sugar and cocoa powder to the melted butter. Add the eggs and baking powder and stir. Add the flour and salt and stir. Pour into a greased 8x8 baking pan. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 20 minutes. For success with this recipe use real butter, do not over stir and most importantly do not over bake. These brownies can be enjoyed plain or iced. They are a perfect for lunches or as a quick and easy

The Livestock Industry Of Early Vermilion

It is no surprise that Vermilion owes its existence to farming and livestock. It are those industries that drove settlers to the

area, helping it grow.

Today in this column, I am looking at the Ten Thousand Club of Vermilion and their short book on Vermilion meant to bring in new residents and business owners.

Much of this column will be quoted directly from that book and I am focusing on the livestock industry.

The booklet states that cattle in the Vermilion area can be wintered at a “trifling cost with exceeding profitable results” and that during the winter months, cattle can

be pastured in the open air, finding shelter in clumps of timber and patches of scrub around the farm.

“In this way cattle of the finest quality are raised almost without expense,” the booklet states.

It goes on to quote a farmer from Iowa stating, “I believe we can raise horses and cattle more cheaply here than in almost any other place on the globe, for they get fat on the range and by running them to oat straw, with nothing but the brush groves to shelter them during the winter months, they winter in fine shape.”

The manager of the experimental farm at Vermilion, identified as Scott, states in the booklet that 69 head of cattle had been shipped out without calling on the government for a dollar. Money was borrowed from the bank to purchase the young animals and

the cost of every employee hour was documented, along with rental charges and the manager’s salary. The profit, according to the booklet, was $700, or $10 per head.

As for horses, the booklet states that the country around Vermilion produces the finest oats in the world and with the climate, it permits the horses to run out the year round, allowing them to naturally occupy an important place on the land.

For sheep and poultry, the booklet states that there is a splendid market for mutton and wool at excellent prices. The booklet quotes a farmer from Ontario stating, “I consider sheep raising in this section of the country is very satisfactory and profitable and think the climate is better in every respect than that of Ontario.”

Area residents have been increasingly targeted as fraud victims over the past few months.

Vermilion TD Branch Manager, Marlene Beattie, is looking to create awareness and encourage people to be more vigilant on the phone.

People from the area have been receiving more fraudulent calls and are told to give their banking information including account numbers or credit card numbers 3” wide version over the phone because there are “dishon-

est people at the bank”.

“Never give account number or visa numbers over the phone. The bank will never call you and ask you for your information because they already have it. Do not go purchase Google Play cards or iTunes cards after being instructed to do so over the phone. Even though you may be told the person you are talking to is from the ‘fraud department’ and they may be extremely convincing, go into your bank and talk to them to stop the fraud. You may even want to call the RCMP,” said Beattie.

People are told the person calling is part of a fraud department and they are investigating a person. When asked, “Why,” they will say, “Because we happen to know they are at a certain store, and we need to catch them in the act.”

Because people follow through with it thinking they are assisting an “honest” person on the other end of the phone to catch someone else in fraudulent activity, and because they made a legitimate purchase, the bank is often unable to

If the bank is doing something about fraud for you, then they will freeze your account so that customers have to come in, making sure they get new information to ensure that the fraud won’t go any further.

We’ve had this happen to so many people; fraudulent people scamming people and stealing their money. It’s really sad because some people are taken for so much money,” said Beattie.

MusiCounts Band Aid Program Awards $900,000 In Musical Instruments To 90 Schools Nationwide

Toronto, ON – Today MusiCounts, Canada’s leading music education charity, is pleased to announce that $ 9 0 0,0 0 0 i n m u s i c a l i n s t r u m e n t s and equipment will be distributed to 90 schools across Canada through the MusiCounts Band Aid Program.

The MusiCounts Band Aid Program provides up to $15,000 worth of musical instruments and equipment to schools in need. These instruments will enable schools to grow their existing music programs or help schools build a brand new music program for students.

This year, the roster of recipient schools is the most regionally diverse yet, with an unprecedented number of schools supported in the Territories, the Atlantic provinces, and the Western provinces. The MusiCounts Band Aid Program is also proud to equip schools with traditional instruments that will enable youth to celebrate and explore their cultural identity. Some schools will also receive adaptive musical instruments, allowing for students with exceptionalities to participate in music class.

“MusiCounts is proud to support 90 recipient schools this year - congratulations to all the music programs!” said Kristy Fletcher, Executive Director, MusiCounts. “However, there is still a lot of work to be done, and reading through many applications we received this year was heartbreaking. Whether schools have no instruments at all, or are struggling with collections of instruments that are in disrepair; students deserve to experience the benefits of music education in their school.”

Edna Oldenburg Celebrates 99 Years

Edna Oldenburg nee Coleman celebrated her 99th Birthday at the Vermilion Valley Lodge on March 1.

Born on February 27, 1921, she had family come visit from Elk Point, Paradise Valley, Blackfoot, Sundre, Leduc, and Vermilion. She loves having family around and had approximately 350 people at some of their family reunions.

Remembering the early days she said, “I rode horseback to school all my life. There was no school bus, and it was three miles away.”

The eldest of six, she liked school and attended the Vanesti School before going with her sister to the Catholic Convent in Wainwright.

“We weren’t Catholic, but we fit in alright. We were good softball players; sports kept us occupied in our spare time.

We had a lot of fun,” said Oldenbug.

She later moved to Edmonton to complete her school and work, and when she moved back to Vermilion, she married Cliff, whose family had been in the cattle business a long time. She stayed on the ranch 30 miles from Vermilion until five years ago.

Through the years, she enjoyed knitting and quilting. Community quilting projects were donated to the Red Cross.

“She was a terrific baker! Irene Wilkinson and her used to sell out at the Farmer’s market,” said Elaine Hardstaff.

Oldenburg went on to say that as technologies changed and improvements came along, that everybody got them.

“At one time we had power by a windmill. Electricity is the best invention.

Roads and everything we have has improved; we’ve come a long ways,” said Oldenburg.

She went on to say that having gone from riding a horse to school, to riding in

The County of Vermilion River hosted an Environmental Farm Plan Workshop at the Red Brick in Vermilion on February 27.

Several attended in hopes to begin or continue to improve their on-site practices.

Craig and Joan Gabrielson from Rivercourse have been in the area 25 years and think it’s a great area to farm with close community ties. When they attended the workshop they said, “It was very helpful.

“One of the reasons we are running the contest is that we are trying to create awareness of the Masonic Lodge in Vermilion.

Free Mason’s Lodges across North America are declining in numbers and typically they don’t recruit, but we are trying to recruit and create some interest in the Masonic Lodge,” said Brian Byrnell.

The Masonic Lodge has been operating in Vermilion since 1906. They are currently down to approximately 20 members, but are part of a worldwide organization growing since the late 1700’s.

“One of the biggest things we do in the community is our Masonic Higher Education Bursary Fund. We issue a lot of scholarships and bursaries to students in the province,” said Byrnell.

Rural Electrification Associations (REAs) are unique in Canada to Alberta. They are distribution power co-ops that provide electricity to farms and rural residential member-owners. In the late 1940s, early 1950s, farmers organized REA cooperatives to bring electricity to the rural areas when investor-owned utilities (IOUs) refused do so because it was too costly. Big Dreams For Students And Bison Industry

Armin and Rita Mueller emigrated from Switzerland to Canada in the 1970s.

Through hard work and innovation, they succeeded first in the dairy industry and then in the bison industry. The owners of Canadian Rangeland Bison and Elk recently announced a $4 million donation to Lakeland College to purchase land and establish a bison herd. In this feature story, they reflect on the opportunities they found in Canada, and the risks they took during their rollercoaster journey as ag producers.

It didn’t take long for Canada to make a favourable impression on Armin Mueller.

“I came to Canada in 1975 to work on a dairy in Quebec. Ten days after I arrived, I mailed my first letter home to my family in Switzerland. I wrote that I wasn’t coming back. I also remember the first letter I got back from home. My brother said, ‘You know, you’re a dumb dreamer. You’ll be back.”

Armin’s brother Xavier was wrong.

Forty-five years after immigrating to Canada, Mueller has no regrets about leaving his family’s dairy farm to work in agriculture in Canada. “There was no room for me over there. I needed to make my own opportunities elsewhere,” says Mueller, who moved to Alberta in 1977 to work on another dairy.

Rita Sigrist also grew up on a small farm in Switzerland. She came to Canada in 1977 on an international agricultural exchange program, working at a grain farm near Basano, Alta. She and Armin met in 1978 when both were visiting their families in Switzerland. They married in 1980 and settled on a dairy farm near Bentley, Alta. that Armin purchased in 1979. They named it Pilatus Farms after the Swiss mountain between their families’ farms.

Things started out well for the Muellers.

Alberta and the dairy industry were booming. But their efforts to expand their dairy combined with record-high interest rates led to challenges. Within a few years they were paying up to 24.5 per cent interest on a $1 million loan.

“We didn’t take many holidays. We worked hard and put in long days all year long. We didn’t know anything else.

But we were happy,” says Armin. They, along with their children Alex, Simon and Michelle, worked together to expand their land base and dairy herd.

Their children didn’t want to dairy farm, so Armin and Rita sold the cows and the milk quota in 2000. That same year, they invested in bison, an animal that’s always fascinated Armin.

“As a little boy, I was captivated with the West. I was reading books and watching Western movies. Bison always had a significant role,” he recalls. Although they had done little research on raising and marketing bison, the couple bought about 300 head of bison. They also invested in Canadian Rangeland Bison and Elk, a marketing company.

Bad news often comes in threes, and that was the case for the Muellers.

Drought, BSE and the near collapse of Canadian Rangeland Bison and Elk occurred shortly after they began raising bison.

“Within probably 15 months of us getting involved in Canadian Rangeland Bison and Elk, that business was in trouble. We had bison and we needed a place for the meat, so, without any experience whatsoever, we took over the company and kept it going,” says Armin. Today Canadian Rangeland Bison sells prime bison meat throughout North America and Europe. The Muellers were also founding partners in 2006 of Canadian Premium Meats, a processing company. They sold their investment in that company five years ago.

Although Armin jokes that investing in bison was the result of a midlife crisis, there’s nothing he’s enjoyed more during his career than raising and marketing bison. “I love everything about bison. The way they run, the way they behave, the way they roll in the dirt. And I really love the meat. It’s high in protein, high in iron and the way we raise bison is as close to nature as we can get,” says Armin.

He acknowledges that if they faced the obstacles they did while raising another animal, he likely would have quit. “But I had the drive to continue because I saw the potential in bison. There’s nothing like a bison, especially in North America.

This is where they thrive,” he says, noting that he’d love Canada to be as famous for bison as it is for maple syrup.

Armin and Rita’s daughter Michelle and her husband Steven are now involved in Pilatus Ranches and Canadian Rangeland Bison. “Michelle and Steven have a real love for bison. I guess Michelle got a little bit of that from her old man,” says Armin with a smile.

Strong partnerships helped the Muel-

lers succeed. “To be successful you need the right partners. You need the right partner in marriage, and in business. You also need the right employees and I’ve been fortunate in all of these areas,” says Armin.

Rita says their journey has always been interesting. “I think you get into this together and you don’t think ahead, you just do it. You work through it. It wasn’t always easy, but if we look back now, 40 years later, I wouldn’t have wanted anything different. It’s been great,” she says. “Canada’s been good for us.”

The Muellers consider their gift to Lakeland College an investment in the future of the bison industry. Students will learn more about bison and take that knowledge with them throughout their careers.

“I think this will really help strengthen the Canadian bison brand,” he says.

Armin’s advice to students is to try new paths, think outside the box, and don’t be afraid of failure. “If it doesn’t work out but you learn from your mistakes, it’ll make you a stronger person.”

And, of course, never quit dreaming.

Keeping Kids Safe On The Farm As more millennials enter Canada’s agricultural workforce, the number of people raising families on farms increases. While growing up in the country presents many advantages, it’s important to remember that farms are dangerous worksites. Here are several hazards agricultural workers should protect kids from.

Machinery and equipment Children often find things like tractors interesting, and adults should make sure there aren’t any little ones around when

running agricultural machinery. Kids can easily fall off a tractor they didn’t know was about to roll out, and simply being in the vicinity may be dangerous for them given that the height of some machinery restricts the operator’s vision.

Livestock Kids don’t tend to think of livestock as dangerous, but even a normally calm and well-behaved animal can be hazardous.

This is especially the case if they feel their own offspring may be in danger. Cattle, in

particular, may not be able to see toddlers and could unwittingly injure them.

Grain It takes only a few seconds for an adult to become trapped by falling grain, which means a child could get buried in the blink of an eye. In addition, the dust created by falling grain can cause serious pulmonary problems, so it’s a good idea to always keep children away from grain storage and work areas.

Chemicals

From pesticides to fertilizers and various cleaning products, farms use a lot of dangerous chemicals. It’s extremely important that these things are stored in a building, room or cabinet that can be locked. In addition, never throw out empty containers in the regular trash as children could find them.

Finally, remember that children imitate their elders, so set a good example by always following safety procedures on the farm.

A Safe Future For Canada’s New Crop Of Farmers With more and more farmers reaching the age of retirement, Canada’s agricultural industry needs more young farmers.

However, farming is a demanding occupation, both mentally and physically, and few agricultural workers have access to the support they need.

A lack of new blood In the last 25 years, the proportion of farmers under the age of 35 in Canada has fallen by 70 per cent. Despite the steady stream of graduates from agricultural sciences programs across the country, millennial farmers remain few and far between. This is in part due to high land prices, meaning that many young farmers start their careers with a financial disadvantage.

A volatile market To make matters worse, the grain market is notoriously volatile. Economic and political tensions often impact the price of cash crops on which many producers rely to make ends meet. Combined with the demands of farm work and the inherent uncertainty that comes with an increasingly unpredictable climate, young

farmers face many sources of stress.

An isolated population By and large, young farmers are isolated from their peers. According to the Canadian Young Farmers’ Forum (CYFF), there simply aren’t enough young producers to support effective networks. Isolation worsens the negative psychological impacts of job-related stress and also reduces the resources young farmers can draw on if they have questions or need help.

A safety problem Mental health directly impacts workplace safety. High stress is correlated with increased accident risks. For young farmers, who are likely to be raising children on the farm, this higher risk can have devastating personal and professional consequences.

The CYFF works to build links between provincial organizations and young farmers. Millennial producers should make it a point to find out what support they can get from their local organizations. This will help ensure a safe and productive agricultural future.

Grain Dust: An Underrated Health Risk One of the most underrated health risks in the agricultural industry comes from longterm exposure to grain dust.

Grain dust is produced from the harvesting, drying, handling, storing and processing of grains like wheat, oats, maize and rye. In addition to particles of grain, the dust contains contaminants such as bacteria, fungal spores, insect debris, animal droppings and pesticide residues.

Effects of inhaling grain dust Breathing in too much grain dust while working on farms has both immediate and long-term effects. In the short term, it can cause workers to experience fatigue and shortness of breath. Long-term exposure can result in symptoms like congestion, coughing and wheezing and fre­quent respiratory infections such as colds, bronchitis and pneumonia. Over time, exposure to

grain dust can lead to serious respiratory illnesses such as farmer’s lung, asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

Minimizing the risks If you work in an environment where you’re exposed to grain dust, you can take steps to reduce your risk of developing a respiratory disease. Above all, make sure to wear the proper respiratory protective equipment (RPE) for the job you’re performing and inform your supervisor if you’re having trouble with your equipment. You should also stay informed about the risks of dust-related illnesses and take the time to train employees about what they can do to stay safe while working with grain.

Farm Safety: Protecting Your Eyes And Ears Working on farms exposes your eyes and ears to all kinds of dangers. That’s why it’s vital that farm workers take precautions and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary.

Avoiding eye injuries Farm workers have a high risk of eye injury from flying particles when performing tasks like feed grinding, haying, welding and repairing equipment. There’s also an acute risk of eye damage when handling pesticides and

other toxic chemicals.

Eye injuries can be prevented by wearing the proper PPE, such as safety glasses, safety goggles (which can fit over most prescription glasses) and welding helmets (which protect eyes from strong ultraviolet and infrared rays that can cause blindness).

Preventing hearing loss Farm workers have one of the highest rates of hearing loss. The noise from agricultural equipment like trac-

tors, chainsaws, power tools and choppers is loud enough to cause permanent hearing loss if you don’t take steps to reduce the risk. You should wear hearing protection when performing a certain task if: • A sound hurts your ears • You have to raise your voice when speaking to someone three feet away

Everything sounds muffled after exposure • Your ears ring after prolonged exposure Limiting the length of exposure and wearing earplugs and earmuffs can go a long way toward reducing your risk of permanent hearing loss. Look for hearing protection equipment with a noise reduction rating (NRR) of 24 or higher.

Congratulations to the Junior Boys Curling Team on winning the BTPS banner on February 25.

The Senior Boys Basketball Team won silver at their last tournament in Ashmont on the weekend of February 22 and then played their last regular game on Wednesday, February 26 at home. They will compete in Zones next but are guarantee a spot in Provincials no matter their final placement as they will be the host team. Provincials will be in two weeks, March 18-20.

Several of our high school students attended the annual Skills Competition at Lakeland College on Friday, February 28 including Wyatt Richardson and Ashton Slootweg in Automotive, Michael Arcand in Electrical, Cole Teasdale in Carpentry and Landyn Herzog in Welding.

Through one of the world’s biggest immunization programs, polio has been 99% eradicated – so this is one last push to destroy the disease for good. But why is it called Purple Pinkie? When a child is vaccinated, they have a purple stamp put on their little finger. Students can make a donation during the lunch hour and have their pinkie dyed purple.

JR Robson will be hosting a dance on March 13. Students will be required to buy tickets for themselves and their guests ahead of time.

Mr. Maier was lucky enough this year to have the amazing opportunity to participate in the Teachers Institute on Canadian Parliamentary Democracy in Ottawa last week. At the beginning of his visit, he stated, “I will be on Parliament Hill for this whole week learning from various speakers and panels, including some Senators and MP’s, about how to engage today’s youth in our schools with learning about govern-

ment, citizenship, and citizen participation in democracy.” They were also lucky enough to receive a visit from Her Excellency the Governor General Julie Payette. “Apparently it’s pretty rare for the GG to visit with visitors, and especially amazing that she actually postponed her trip to Thunder Bay to open the Canadian Winter Special Olympics just to speak with us! Julie Payette was amazing and inspiring to listen to.” On the third day, Mr. Maier was able to sit in the Prime Minister’s chair.

This week marks the beginning of an important time in our Catholic Faith here at St. Jerome’s. On Monday, Mrs. Lysons’ class did their happigram presentation teaching students all about Lent and our journey closer towards God during this time of year. The Knights of Columbus came on Shrove Tuesday to volunteer their time and efforts to make a pancake feast for students and staff to enjoy. Traditionally, Christians made pancakes on this day as a way to use up their milk, eggs, and sugar before the 40 days of fasting during Lent started. Spartans also dressed up in their pajamas to embrace the pancake breakfast to the fullest. On Ash Wednesday, we walked to Mass to continue to learn about Lent and the three pillars of our faith during this time: fasting, almsgiving, and prayer.

We received the mark of the cross in ashes, made from blessed palms from the previous year, on our foreheads to remind us we are dust and unto dust we shall return. Ash Wednesday this year coincided with Pink Shirt Day, where students wore pink as a reminder to spread kindness!

Last Friday, Nick’s Family Restaurant donated a delicious spaghetti lunch to every Grade One student in the school.

Thank you very much for your kindness, it was greatly appreciated. The kids licked their plates clean, and if they didn’t have time to finish went back and finished it at last snack. Lane Arnold, in Ms. Svenungard’s class, even exclaimed “This is the best food I have ever had in my life!”

In athletics, out Grade 6/7 Jr. Girls played their last basketball game of the season on Wednesday night, losing to Innisfree by one basket in the last 30 seconds of the game. Coach Frankiw says her team improved so much, had lots of fun, and are

all looking forward to next season. Our Sr. Boys team has exciting news! After winning 5 out of their last 6 games they are raked first heading into the Northeast Zones in Fort McMurray March 13 and 14. Good luck Spartans!

The Grade 2 Culture Fair took p l ac e at VES o n February 21. Grade 2 students showed their family members some traditional songs, dances, and games from different cultures. Then the students and their families shared some traditional food from different cultures, made by the parents of the children.

On February 24 and 25, the Kindergarten students got the opportunity to go to the Lakeland College Sheep and Dairy Barn. Students got to feed, hold and learn about the new lambs. They even got to see their tour guide shear a sheep. In the dairy barn, students learned about the cows and how we get their milk. Students loved

seeing all the robots do their jobs in that barn. A huge thank you to the ladies there for organizing this amazing opportunity for students. It was a great way to experience another service in our community.

Pink Shirt Day took place on February 26. It was great to see so many students, staff, and community members wearing pink on this day as a reminder to choose kindness. We thank the RCMP for stopping by to deliver pencils to the students.

We held our Celebration of Learning on the evening of February 27. Families of our VES children had the opportunity to visit classrooms, learning from their children.

They viewed their children’s work and participated in activities set up in the classrooms. Thank you to those of you who took the time to spend a portion of your evening with us at VES.

Basketball Club is wrapping up for another year. The staff will play a basketball game against the students during the noon recess on March 4. Come on out and cheer on your favorite team. It will be a barn burner.

VES’s new Social Emotional Coach (SEC) is JoAnne Flath. She will be working as a SEC at Vermilion Elementary School and J.R. Robson and cannot wait to meet with staff and students to add to their emotional awareness and overall well being. She is a Certified Life Skills Coach and has worked as a counselor in the past.

The last couple of years she has been facilitating Life Skills Programs for both organizations and individuals. JoAnne has a passion for helping others, especially in our local area. When she is not working, she is usually enjoying time riding horses

Hay is a major forage source over the winter-feeding season in the cow/ calf sector, but an increasing number of producers are considering silage if they aren’t already using it.

Ac c or d ing to the 2016 /17 Western Canadian Cow-Calf Survey, most respondents practiced some type of extensive feeding method, such as in-field feeding, for most of the winter.

While all respondents used rolled bales (baled hay or straw) as par t of their feeding program, about 30% also used other winter-feeding methods and materials including silage and chopped hay with a bale processor. In the east, the 2015/16 Ontario Cow-Calf Survey shows that 91% of producers winter their cat tle using baled hay, while 45% reported feeding silage. According to the 2016/17 Atlantic Cow-Calf Survey, average days on feed by feed type (non-exclusive to one feed type) are 83 days on silage, 74 days on baled hay, and 52 days on crop residues.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Silage A major benefit to putting up silage is that, provided the crop is at the right stage, it can be harvested in almost any weather condition. Lengthy dr y down times can be avoided and harvest operations can continue even in c ool or moist c onditions. When harvesting silage, it is recommended that the crop be at 60-65% moisture level to maximize quality and packing

Compared to most other systems, such as baling dr y hay, silage has fewer har vesting losses and more nutrients can be harvested per acre.

Ensiling permits the use of a wider rang e of cro ps in c luding gras ses, legumes, grains, corn and salvage c r o p s t h at h ave s u f fer e d we at h er damage or weed infestation. Also, silage harvest can typically be done in a much shorter timeframe compared to hay.

The major disadvantage of silage compared to hay is that it requires more capital investment or cash costs.

Due to the high costs of planting and har ve st in g e q ui p m e nt , m any li ve stock producers choose to not own the equipment, but rather hire custom operators. As custom operators are usually booked well in advance, producers need to plan seeding and harvest well ahead of time and make sure they have custom operators lined up. Also, silage has limited market p ote nt i a l, b e c au s e tr u c k i n g c o s t s restrict the distance hauled, so it must be produced near the location where it will be fed.

Cost Considerations The costs of producing barley or corn silage on a per acre basis are typically higher than dry hay production. Using Manitoba as an example in western Canada, total production costs of barley silage and corn silage on an operation that owns the associated equipment are estimated at $292/acre and $447/acre respectively,

which is 20% and 85% higher than the cost of producing dry alfalfa grass hay ($242/acre). Higher costs for barley and corn silage production is mainly associated with seed and treatment, fertilizer, machinery and labour.

When changing the assumption from owned equipment to using c usto m o perator s, mac hiner y an d f u e l ex p e n s e d r o p, w h i l e c u s t o m costs are added. Using the mid-point of surveyed custom work rates, estimated total production cost drops to $286/acre for barley silage and $440/ acre for corn silage, which remains 18% and 82% higher than the cost of producing dry alfalfa grass hay. There is a similar story in Ontario, with the total cost of corn silage production estimated at $549/acre in 2019 which is 59% higher than the cost of producing alfalfa-timothy hay at $346/acre.

It should be noted that there can be a wide variation in custom work rates depending on the region, yield, harvest conditions and other factors.

Yield Matters As silage production is an expensive process per acre, tr ying to achieve optimum yield is a key factor to lower silage production costs on a per ton basis.

Using the projected 2020 Manitoba cost-of-production numbers, production cost on a dry matter (DM) basis is estimated at $104/ton for barley silage ($38/wet ton, yield at 7.5 wet ton/acre, DM% at 37%), and $109/ton for corn silage ($31/wet ton, yield at 14 wet ton/acre, DM% at 29%), compared to $99/ton for alfalfa-grass hay ($87/wet ton, yield at 2.79 wet ton/acre, DM% at 87%) (See Table 1). In order to reduce the cost per ton for silage to a cost

similar to dry hay, the tipping point of barley silage yield is 7.83 wet ton/acre and corn silage yield is 15.40 wet ton/ acre.

Ration Is Part of The Answer Achieving the optimum silage yield levels requires the right combination of temperature, moisture conditions, fertility and seed variety, which is not possible in every growing season for ever y operation. But not being able to produce silage at a lower cost than hay doesn’t necessarily mean silage is not an economical feed option. Blending silage with less-expensive feeds such as straw can keep overall feed cost low while meeting the animal’s nutrition needs.

Using Table 1 cost estimates, and an assumed price of straw at $64/ ton, a silage-based ration made of 33lb barley silage and 19lb cereal straw would cost $1.18/cow/day. This is cheaper than a hay-based ration comprised of 16lb alfalfa grass hay and 16 lb cereal straw, which would cost $1. 21/cow/day. (Note that this only includes the cost of main feed ingredients; other expenses such as vitamins, minerals, yardage, labour are excluded).

Size Matters The 2018 Saskatchewan Forage Market Price Survey reported producers who turned to silage as a feeding option are those with large cow herds (250+), mixed operations that own large equipment already, or those in areas where land prices are high.

How big does a beef operation need to be to economically feed silage?

While there is no simple answer to the question, we can look at how big the cow herd needs to be to consume the silage produced.

BULL BREEDERS Continued from page 25 Assuming a silage-based feed ration requires 33 lbs (or 12 lbs DM) of barley silage per day for a beef cow in midpregnancy with a body condition score of 3.0, and silage yield is at 8 ton/acre (or 3 ton/acre DM); production from one acre of land can support three cows over a 150-day winter feeding period.

If a producer can harvest about 100 acres of land in one day at 3 ton/acre DM yield (using custom silage services with a big chopper (e.g. 700 hp motor), two semis and one tandem hauling), one day of harvest would yield 300 tons of DM, which is enough to feed 300 cows over the winter. This may explain why many producers who turned to silage as a feed option are those with more than 250 head of cows. While the above analysis assumes all silage produced on the operation is fed in the same year, it should be noted that silage can be held over from one year to the next as well.

Decision-making tools Compared to traditional hay production, the benefits of silage include less dependence on weather conditions and less time required during harvest, as well as the ability to mix with other more

economical feedstuffs to reduce overall cost of feed. However, for many producers who are used to hay production, growing, harvesting and feeding silage could be a steep learning curve.

From a cost perspective, it is important to identify the added costs associated with silage production (e.g. additional fertilizer, labour) and the equipment changes required for feeding silage (e.g. a mixer wagon and a second tractor); and consider factors such as average hay yield, current cost of production, as well as targeted silage yield, and yield potential in the area. There are decision making tools available to calculate and compare costs of production for hay and silage.

current price level, feed quality, and the animal’s nutritional needs. Producers can use BCRC’s decision making tool Winter Feed Cost Comparison Calculator to compare the costs of main feed ingredients in different rations.

While the above discussion mainly focuses on cost factors, it should be kept in mind that there are other critical factors to consider, such as variety selection, harvest and storage management. Proper Management Key To Minimize Risk Of Calf Scours

Get cow-calf pairs out onto clean ground, such as fresh pasture, and give them as much space as possible. That’s how Ryan McCarron sidestepped a calf scours outbreak on his eastern Nova Scotia farm in 2019.

M c C ar r o n, w h o far m s w i t h fa m i l y members at Antigonish, about 160 km northeast of Halifax, became alarmed when a few calves became sick and died early in the 2019 spring calving season.

“It was a frustrating situation,” says McCarron. “Calves were getting sick, we treated them but several still died.

Something had to change.”

Necropsy examinations showed the dead calves had picked up a harmful strain of E. coli bacteria, likely from fecal contamination of the soil in the yard next to the barn, which led to the serious and fatal cases of scours.

“The yard conditions looked good,” says McCarron. “It wasn’t muddy, the cows had clean udders, but the bacteria must have been in the soil. As soon as we realized the problem we moved everything out on to fresh ground and made sure they had as much space

as possible. And as cows calved we’d keep moving them to fresh areas. We also made sure calves were up and sucking and getting colostrum. Getting cows and calves out to pasture, solved about 98 per cent of the problem. If we did have a sick calf we’d treat it and keep it away from other calves.”

The McCarrons run a commercial cow-calf herd of between 150 and 180 head depending on the year. McCarron says while he only has so much pasture and hay land, he was practicing his version of the Sandhills calving system by moving cow-calf pairs to fresh ground and away from cows and heifers that had yet to calve.

M c C ar r o n’s r e l at i ve l y s i m p l e approach in dealing with scours is exactly what veterinarians across the country recommend as a key management practice for reducing the risk of calf scours. It isn’t the only management tool to keep calves healthy, but keeping animals clean and dry on well bedded calving grounds or on fresh pasture during the calving season is an important part of reducing disease risk.

the 2019 breeding season so cows will start calving in early June 2020, instead of May. He says the weather can be a bit more unpredictable in early May and most pastures aren’t quite ready for turnout. With June calving, the grass will be ready so cow-calf pairs will have plenty of clean fresh ground available. “And since we finish our cattle we don’t have to worry about calves being a certain size for the fall calf sales,” he says.

Scours Take a Toll Calf diarrhea (scours) is the primary cause of death in calves from two to 30 days of age. Scours can be caused by pathogens such as viruses, bacteria and microscopic parasites. Most of these pathogens do their damage in the intestinal tract. Several mechanisms go to work there, all of which cause diarrhea or scours.

Rotavirus, coronavirus and cryptosporidium (crypto) can be carried by healthy heifers and cows and are shed into the environment in their manure.

Cryptosporidium is particularly troublesome because no effective treatment nor vaccine is available despite extensive research.

Bacteria, such as cer tain strains of E. coli and Salmonella, invade the deeper layers of the intestinal lining, rapidly destroying it, with the infection causing release of blood and mucus into the diarrhea.

If c at tle c alve in the same area year after year, the soil can become c o n t a m i n at e d w i t h s c o u r- c au s i n g pathogens. Newborn calves often pick up the pathogen from feces of other animals and from contaminated soil and water. While not all calves will become sick, their guts can serve as pathogen-multipliers. These calves shed an increasing load of pathogen onto the calving ground, then younger calves come along and pick up the heavy load of the bacteria. The doseload of pathogens over whelms the calf ’s ability to resist disease, and suddenly the beef producer is dealing with a bunch of sick calves.

Ontario Advice In southwest Ontario, Jenna Funk, a veterinarian with the Metzger Veteri-

nary Services at Linwood has two key management tips for producers looking to keep newborn calves healthy.

First, keep cows and newborn calves as clean and dry as possible.

And se c ond, d on’t mix young and older calves.

“I don’t think you can use too much bedding,” says Funk. “It is particularly impor tant to keep newborn calves clean and dry. You don’t want them to be in mud, or to get cold, wet and chilled. Move them onto concrete flooring or higher ground with well-drained soil and provide lots of bedding. If a calf gets cold, wet and chilled it weakens their immune system and they are not able to fight off bugs.”

She also urges producers to keep newborn calves separated from older calves. “Keep them in like-age groups as much as possible,” she says. “If you have day-old calves for example, don’t mix them with calves that are more than two weeks old.”

Newborn calves co -mingled with older calves, particularly if they are c o n c entr ate d in a relat ively s m all area, and particularly if weather conditions are cool and wet is really the ideal scenario for the development of a scours outbreak in a cowherd.

By keeping the more vulnerable newborn calves on clean ground away from the two-week and older calves that can be a reservoir for infectious causes of scours, the risk of a scours outbreak is greatly reduced.

From Southern Alberta In southern Alberta, Steve Hendrick, veterinarian with Coaldale Veterinary Clinic says a herd health program that includes scours vaccines for cows and heifers can be effective in helping reduce the risk of calves getting sick, but at the same time it is no silver bullet either. Pro p er m anag em ent and production practices need to be applied as well. “ Vaccines can be quite ef fective and we’ve probably seen more uptake in producers vaccinating the first and second calf heifers,” says Hendrick.

“The longer cows have been around it is generally expected their first milk — their colostrum — will probably carry more of a punch in terms of providing calves with disease immunity. With younger cows the colostrum may not be as good or the calf may not get as much, so the vaccination program provides some insurance to enrich that colostrum.”

Depending on the product used, the primary vaccination is administered anywhere from two to four and even up to eight weeks before calving, with a booster shot recommended before calving. Producers need to consult with their herd veterinarian to decide if or which scours vaccination program is right for their farm.

While a scours vaccine is one management tool, Hendrick emphasizes the importance of also applying proper management.

If sick calves are treated, be sure to properly clean (disinfect) any tube feeders between treatments to make sure viruses and bacteria aren’t being transferred from one calf to another through equipment.

I f t h e r e ’s a s n o w s t o r m d u r i n g calving season, Hendrick has seen producers use a tractor to blade snow off areas of the calving field so cows and calves have a relatively dry place to lie. Applying bedding to cleared strips is also a good idea.

And somewhat as a biosecurit y measure, if a sick cow is being treated on the farm don’t put her in the calving area “it’s tempting, because it is handy,” says Hendrick. A sick cow could have something infectious that could be transferred to calves.

Re duc e Environm e nt al E xpo sure Cheryl Waldner, professor at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, says however it is achieved, the main objective in reducing the risk of scours is to minimize the environmental exposure to fecal contamination. Have clean cows, calving in a clean area.

“There is no one, single approach that works,” says Waldner. “Keeping the herd and calves healthy involves applying proper management in several areas, particularly during that critical first couple weeks of a calf’s life.”

Waldner says the big picture of producing healthy calves starts with proper bull selection to produce a vigorous calf at birth. And she points out it is also important to ensure cows are fed a proper ration and maintain

a proper body condition heading into calving season. “Part of that includes supplying cows with proper vitamins and minerals,” says Waldner. “Particularly in a dry growing season, vitamin A and E can be deficient in forages, so producers need to be vigilant that cows are receiving sufficient vitamin A and E in the weeks and months before calving, so it can be passed along to calves in the colostrum.”

fresh colostrum from the cow — but at the same time when fed to newborn calves in need they will literally save lives.”

Veterinarians recommend feeding calves colostrum which contains any where from a minimum of 10 0 grams of immunoglobulin G (IgG) up to 200 grams IgG. The best source of supplemen tal colostrum is from within your own herd. The freshly calved cow can be milked, or colostrum can be collected from another cow on your farm and frozen for up to one year. Avoid colostrum sourced from other farms, to prevent bringing unwanted diseases

Waldner emphasizes the importance of getting good quality colostrum into newborn calves within the first hour or so after their birth. Recommendations can vary, but a good starting point, when intervention is necessary, is to ensure the calf gets at least one litre of good-quality colostrum within four hours after birth and then either nurses from its dam or receives another litre of colostrum before it is 12 hours old.

Waldner says when dealing with first-calf heifers that are mis-mothered or in the case of twins being born, for example, calves may need to be supplemented with a high quality powdered colostrum product. “There are several good quality colostrum products on the market,” she says.

“It is important producers have a good working relationship with their herd veterinarian to discuss how a scours vaccination program might benefit their operation,” says Waldner.

“At the same time the veterinarian can provide input into overall management and herd health programs. Vaccines can be effective, but there is currently no vaccine that will by itself override a serious disease challenge from management or the environment.”
