Lakeland Rowing Team hosted a Coast To Coast Indoor Rowing Day event on February 22, at Badd Cycle and Lakeland College.

Several first-time rowers, individuals, spinners, and sports teams participated in the national event.

“A huge thank you to Badd Cycle for operating as our satellite site. The day went pretty smoothly. I accepted a coach’s challenge to row 16 kilometers and completed it. It was nice to have the

team in support,” said Peter Walsh.

In Vermilion between the two sites and within the three hour time limit, there were 16 rowers who rowed 94,135 meters, “That’s past Vegreville from here!” added Walsh.

Nationally there were rowers from every province from over 40 clubs and many other sites like gyms and cross fit studios. In total close to 6,000 kilometres were rowed by over 1,500 rowers.

“We reached our first goal of rowing all across Canada (5514 kilometres)!” said Peter Walsh participating in a coach’s challenge during the Coast to Coast rowing.

Community Closet Donation

The Community Closet in Vermilion donated $5,250 to local community organizations and youth groups on February 20.

Recipients included Rotary Music Festival ($250), Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association ($250), Dance Impressions by Ryan’s Parent Council ($250), Vermilion & District Housing Foundation ($2,000), Holy

Name Catholic Parish ($2,000), Junior Ladies Curling Team ($250), and Vermilion Army Cadets ($250).

“All of our staff are volunteers, so all of the money made at the Community Closet goes right back into our community,” said Rose Hardy.

The Vermilion & District Housing Foundation’s Susan Macdonald said,” We’re thrilled to receive this generous donation

that will support a med cart at the Vermilion Valley Lodge. It will be used by AHS staff for medication delivery to independent living residents.”

Kate Gilberg from the Vermilion Junior Ladies Competitive Curling Team said, “We’re extremely grateful for this donation.

They’ve attended a curling camp and this will help cover the cost of an upcoming bonspiel and team jackets.”

The Rotary Music Festival’s Bernie Huedepohl said, “They’ve supported us since 1980, and we appreciate the work that they do.”

Vermilion Town Council held a regular meeting on February 18, and discussed the requirement for an upcoming by-election.

Tanis Henderson indicated her resignation effective immediately on February 10.

“It’s unfortunate; we will miss her input and wish her all the best,” said Mayor Caroline McAuley.

A motion was carried to hold the by-election on April 27. As a result, intending candidates must submit their nomination papers in person by 12 p.m. on March 16.

Amendments were made to committees and boards that will remain in effect until after the upcoming by-election: Councillor Barr was appointed to the Family and Community Support Services Board; Councillor Thompson was appointed to

the Disaster Services Agency, and the Public Safety and Protective Services Committee; and Mayor McAuley was appointed to the Communities in Bloom Committee.

An engineering proposal was submitted by Bar Engineering Ltd. for the 2020 Water Main Improvement Program, which includes three water mains. A motion to accept the proposal for $67,800 plus GST was carried.

During Round Table discussions, Councillor McCullough noted that the Town of Vermilion has conducted interviews for the Director of Community Services position.

Councillor Pulyk discussed broadband, and said, “The businesses approached on the project are really excited. There has been a hold up on delivery of electronics from China, but we have acquired a high point in town and radios will be installed soon.”

“A Shattered New Start’ – Author Talk

his new book, ‘A Shattered New Start,’ at “I had always wanted to write a book, but the Vermilion Public Library on February writing it involved a huge learning curve.

Local author, Kevin Sommer, discussed 20.

They say write about what you know, and I’ve dealt with a lot of school bullies over the years. I used to think bullies were bad children, but one less hurting person is one less bully,” said Sommer.

He incorporated childhood thoughts and experiences, as well as experiences as a teacher of 35 years, and included perspectives of the bully, victim, teachers, principal, and parents. He admitted that writing was not his strongest area in school, having failed English 30 and taken it for two years.

He also turned down his first position offered in Vermilion at St. Jerome’s School as an English teacher. He went on to say that he has since learned a lot about writing through taking online courses and speaking to authors about how to write a book.

He cut over half of his first manuscript and said, “Editors will tell you to get rid of anything that does not advance the story; Author, Kevin Sommer. Photo Angela Mouly let the story tell itself.”

Owner, Tanis Cochrane, has donated 20 pairs of shoes to be auctioned off between February 18 and 29, through a silent bidder auction.

One hundred per cent of the proceeds raised through this auction will be donated to the Vermilion Ice Plant. To enter a bid you have to register at the store to obtain a bid number. Tanis thought this would be a very worthwhile cause due to the importance of our skating and curling facilities to Vermilion families. She also highlighted the tremendous amount of economic spin-off the facilities generate to the community as a whole through tournaments, bonspiels, and games throughout

Reducing The Impact Of Financial Strain In Vermilion

The Reducing The Impact Of Financial Strain (RIFS) group held a meeting in Vermilion on February 19.

The group has been meeting to identify challenges people face in the area and suggest ways to make improvements in the future. They recently participated in creating a Community Capacity Assessment Tool, and reviewed the results. The RIFS vision is: All people experiencing financial strain will be connected and navigated to the appropriate services. They spent time discussing empathy and shared a video where Brene Brown said, “Empathy fuels connection while sympathy drives disconnection.�

Participants discussed hypothetical case

studies of various financially strained situations to identify the subjects’ wants and challenges. They also were given an update on the screening tool being used at the Kalyna Primary Care Network (PCN).

Vermilion and area residents are encouraged to participate and PCN Community Innovation Liaison, Natasja Hallett said, “We don’t want to give people a business card, but a warm hand off and assist in shaping relationships with key community resources.�

people feel stressed about money. “They can find it hard to pay their bills.

This can negatively affect their health.

Thirty-three per cent of Canadians are regularly stressed about money. Twenty-five per cent feel like they are struggling or on the edge financially,� said the report.

It went on to say that financial well-being and income are different. They suggest that events like moving, having children, illness, changing jobs, and retirement can all impact financial well- being. People with disabilities, women, single parent families, Indigenous peoples, racialized people, seniors, and people with limited education are particularly vulnerable to financial strain according to the report. They also note that societal factors like the economy, labour markets,

and government policies play a big role in financial well-being. “Income does not fully capture financial strain. Know that people who fall outside of typical income cut-offs may have fewer services and benefits available to them,� added the report. “A PhD, etc, does not guarantee a good outcome; what shows a positive outcome is the relationship and connection you form with people,� said Patrick Ulrich, AHS Continuing Care (Home care) Social Worker.

Overall, participants are looking forward and aiming to create a well community.

Pneumonia Prevention At Your Pharmacy

When you’re at increased risk for pneumonia, it’s important to know how you can avoid contracting the disease.

We chatted with Kim Clarke, Pharmacy Manager at Cornerstone Co-op in Vermilion, Alta., about pneumonia, its causes and what you can do to protect yourself.

What is pneumonia?

“Pneumonia is a lower respiratory tract infection leading to inflammation of the lungs,” said Clarke.

It’s a contagious, serious condition that can affect people of any age, but it’s most common and most dangerous in very young children, people older than 65 and people with underlying medical problems.

Although there are different types, this article will focus on community-acquired pneumonia. This is the term for pneumonia contracted in a community setting outside of the healthcare system—hospitals, care homes, etc. It can be caused by viruses or

bacteria.

Pneumonia causes fever and chills, a cough, increased mucus production, difficulty breathing and pain when breathing deeply. Complications from pneumonia, including fluid in the lungs, infection, cardiac complications or blood clots, can be life-threatening.

Who is at risk?

Clarke explained that some groups of adults are at a higher risk of developing pneumonia. You may be at risk if you meet the following criteria: • You’re older than 65.

• You have chronic conditions such as chronic lung disease, renal, heart or liver disease and diabetes.

• Your immune system is weakened due to HIV, organ transplant, chemotherapy or long-term use of steroid medications.

• You smoke or consume a large amount of alcohol.

• You’ve had a recent viral upper respi-

ratory tract infection such as influenza.

• You have difficulty coughing due to stroke, limited mobility, sedating drugs or alcohol.

How is pneumonia treated?

Bacterial pneumonia is treated with antibiotics. Most people can be treated with oral antibiotics at home; however, more severe infections may require treatment in hospital.

“Some people also require treatment with inhalers and oral corticosteroids to help bring down inflammation in the lungs and help with shortness of breath,” said Clarke.

How can community-acquired pneumonia be prevented?

Living a healthy lifestyle, including eating right, exercising and maintaining a healthy weight, can help prevent many health problems. Clarke noted that quitting smoking and avoiding secondhand

smoke exposure is another important way to help prevent pneumonia and improve your overall health, as smoking causes lung damage which can increase your risk of getting pneumonia.

Always remember to wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcoholbased hand sanitizer. If you’re sick, cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and dispose of used tissues immediately.

“There is also a vaccine against the most common type of bacterial pneumonia. Ask your pharmacist or doctor if you should have it. You should get a flu vaccine every year,” said Clarke.

know that we may still have to brace for more upcoming cold or snowy days. This week is Shove Tuesday, which ushers in Easter, and the beginning of spring.

Shove Tuesday is celebrated all around the world, and it is also called surprisingly Mardi Gras or maybe not so surprisingly Pancake Day. In Portugal, Spain, Brazil and Italian speaking countries it is called Carnival, and it is a celebration accompanied with costumes and parades. Instead of pancakes malasadas is the food of the day, which are fried donuts. Shove Tuesday is a day of indulgence of rich food before the fasting of Lent beginning the next day on Ash Wednesday. This celebration goes back more than a thousand years. Shove Tuesday is also a day to think of your sins, and confess them to God as well as indulging is rich foods.

For many culture cultures pancakes are considered rich food, but celebrating Shove Tuesday also extends to donuts in Lithuania, and pastries in several other countries. In the Ukraine, Russia and other Slavic countries, they celebrate a Pancake Week, with is also tied to Lent and their folk Farewell to Winter celebrations. It consists of costumes, parades, the burning of a large flammable sculpture and of course, lots of pancakes. Last year a three-metre pancake was made. I am not sure how they flipped it! The food in the spotlight this week is pancakes.

Enjoy them with your choice of syrup, jam or whipped cream and fruit.

Pancakes 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 3.75” wide version 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

2 teaspoons sugar 1 egg 4 Tablespoons melted butter 1 1/2 cups milk 1 teaspoon vanilla Oil for the skillet or grill Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar in a medium size bowl.

Make a well in the bowl and add the milk, egg, melted butter and vanilla. Stir until just blended. Over stirring will toughened the pancakes. Brush the skillet or grill with oil. Oil with a high smoke point is best.

Choose safflower oil, grape seed oil or canola oil. If you are using an electric grill, set it to 325 degrees. Spoon the batter onto the grill in your chosen pancake size.

Flip the pancake when bubbles begin to form on the top or the bottom is a golden brown color.

Julius Passer And The Steamer

T h e Ve r m i l i o n River presented severe challenges for those who lived in the area before bridges were built to help residents navigate. For many, it would mean long trips until a bridge or low point in the river could be found.

For some, it meant getting stuck. That is where Julius Passer comes in.

It was early in the 20th century when Jim Armstrong was taking his 110 Case Steamer over the Vermilion River and got it stuck east of where Mercier’s bridge would be built later.

His attempts to dislodge the steamer

did not go well and before long it was deeper in the mud and the firebox was filled with water, killing the engine.

Jim then hitched a team of horses to it, but once again no success.

Jim then contacted Julius Passer, a blacksmith who made repairs to steamers, asking if it was worth it to save it.

Julius said it was good to save the steamer and he arrived with his driving team, which by all accounts was not a good driving team in appearance or size.

The first thing Passer did was get a hay-rope of several hundred feet and he cut it into lengths and wired them through a pulley to make a spool. One end of the rope was secured to a spoke of the wheel, and the other end was taken to the drive team and the double-trees on the bank.

Julius then spurred on his team, which obeyed obediently and began to move forward.

Over and over, he would push his team, stopping them, adjusting the rope and then continuing them on as the pulley got tighter and tighter.

For over an hour at least, he was moving back and forth between the team and the steamer to ensure the ropes were holding in their points and to adjust everything. It was tough and difficult work for the blacksmith from North Dakota. Each time he pushed his team, the tractor would move ahead two inches or so and then it was back to adjust everything.

Eventually, the front wheels reached the bank and the water ran out of the firebox. Passer continued to wind rope, set

locks and push the team ahead to move the tractor a little bit once again.

While all this was happening, Jim Armstrong was away on his property but when he came back Julius was rolling a smoke and the tractor was nearly out of the water as the firebox continued to dry.

With that, and with the arrival of George Ronaghan, who was able to get the firebox to fire up and start the tractor, the work of Julius Passwer was done.

He would leave Alberta soon after that, taking work on the railway gangs in British Columbia, to return to the area.

It would employ about 30 people full-time once operational, and we expect to create between 200 and 250 workers during the construction phase. Along with employment opportunities, we expect there would be increased business for local services and the project provides revenue for local and provincial governments.

The plant would be located south of Kitscoty and use a pipeline to transport sales oil to a nearby Husky facility, minimizing truck traffic. We plan to recycle wastewater from the Lloydminster Upgrader, supplemented with makeup water from the North Saskatchewan River. This would travel from the Upgrader via pipeline.

As with everything we do, our focus throughout construction and operation would be the safety of the public, our workers and the environment.

Efficient Grain Dryer Grant: What You Need To Know

Earlier this month the Canadian Agricultural Partnership announced that there is funding to improve energy efficiency of grain dryers. Expenses that are eligible will be cost shared with the program. The grant will cover 50 per cent of the cost and

the applicant will cover the other 50 per cent.

There is a few requirements to receive the grant including having an Environmental Farm Plan (EFP). An EFP is a certification that helps you identify and address environmental risks in your operation.

Having an EFP demonstrates to the public,

government, lenders and/or investors that you are managing your environmental risks and increases your eligibly for grants like the Efficient Grain Dryer Grant.

The County of Vermilion River is hosting an EFP workshop on February 27th where several environmental farm plan technicians can help you through the EFP

process and answer your questions. While working through your farm plan you can enjoy coffee in The Red Brick in Vermilion and have a catered lunch on us.

How Geography Impact Media Access, Usage And Engagement

New Research on Media Consumption in Rural Markets: A new study conducted exclusively in markets with under 100,000 population in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba confirms once again, people living in rural communities consume news and information differently than people living in large cities.

A new study conducted by Totum Research with 900 Adults 18+ affirms that rural markets differ significantly from large urban ones when it comes to media consumption habits. The study: How Geography Impacts Media Access, Usage and Engagement (2020), found that several factors including internet connectivity and connection methods impact media access and shape what people can do online. The result being a stronger reliance on traditional media, printed community newspapers in particular, for news and information.

7 in 10 Households Still Receiving Printed Newspapers Into the Household and 80% Having Read the Last Edition Among the key findings of the study was that 71% of respondents said they’ve received a community newspaper at their home in the last 7 days. The highest rate of receivership is amongst farm house-

holds with 81% reporting receivership of a printed community newspaper. Of receivers, 80% indicated that they’ve read or looked into the printed newspaper. For context, this level of readership is consistent with the numbers from the last release of ComBase data in 2005/2006 and a stark contrast from the narrative that readership of printed newspapers is in significant universal decline.

Internet Connectivity a Major Factor in Shaping Online Activities of Rural Canadians While internet connections in large metropolitan areas are generally solid in terms of both stability, speed and affordability, the same cannot be said in rural remote communities. Fully, 32% of respondents indicated that they had either no internet connection, a dial up connection, or a connection tied to data usage. The findings in terms of the types and degrees of activities affected were significant. 46% of respondents said their ability to conduct online research was affected by their internet connection. Streaming video was said to be affected by 35% of respondents, 29% of social media users said their usage was impacted by their connection and half of all respondents said that online shopping was either affected by their internet connection or was an activity they didn’t do.

People in Rural Communities Not Engaging With Newspaper Websites at the Same Rate as Those Living in Urban Communities While people living in large metropolitan areas may have transitioned to receiving news and information from the websites of large urban dailies, the results of the study say it’s not happening at the same rate once you get outside of major populated areas. Overall, 23% of responded said they’ve visited the website of a local community newspaper in the last week.

The highest visit rates (29% visited in the last week) were reported by people living in Cities of between 10,000-100,000 population. Conversely, people living on Farms or in Hamlets (1,000 population) reported the lowest visit rates of 17% in the last week, perhaps another example of how online activities are affected by internet connection type.

Ads in Printed Newspapers Found to be Both USEFUL and Inspire Action. Ads on Social Media and Random Websites, Not So Much.

While 50% of respondents indicated that they found ads in printed community newspapers to be useful, only 10% said the same about ads on social media or random websites. Conversely, 35% of study participants admitted that they were

actually ANNOYED by online ads, either on websites or social media compared to only 3% saying ads in printed newspapers annoyed them. 3% of respondents said they often intentionally click on online ads.

Across each of the 7 measured sectors ads in printed community newspapers were most likely to be inspiring action in the form of an in-person store visit, online store visit or a purchase decision: Automotive: 27% inspired by ads in printed community newspapers Financial Services: 23% inspired by ads in printed community newspapers Government Services: 31% inspired by ads in printed community newspapers Agriculture: 31% inspired by ads in printed community newspapers Telecommunications: 21% inspired by ads in printed community newspapers Retail Stores: 40% inspired by ads in printed community newspapers Food and Grocery: 49% inspired by ads in printed community newspapers Interestingly, ads in printed community newspapers were 40% more likely to drive an in-person or online store visit than ads on social media or random websites.

Overall, traditional media were found to be the platforms, most likely to inspire action, while online ads, including ads on newspaper websites, the least inspiring.

A Mental Health In Agriculture Workshop will be hosted at Lakeland College (Spurs) on March 3, from 8:30 a.m.

The workshop will be held in partnership with The Do More Agriculture Foundation and Farm Credit Canada. Organizer, Quinn Hlus, is looking forward to hearing from facilitator, Brenda Mein, about her strategies to support people’s well-being.

mental health, aiming to end the stigma surrounding it by creating awareness.

The Vermilion Wellness Coalition hosted Family Fun Day at J.R. Robson School on February 17. According to Pat Calyniuk, 123 people attended, and everyone enjoyed the opportunity to sample bannock and hot chocolate.

The Family Day activities were a partnership through the Vermilion Wellness Committee whose partners include the Town of Vermilion, Be Fit for Life, VIBE and Alberta Health Services. The Vermilion and Early Childhood Coalition provided some of the games and the Town of Vermilion Block Party Kit provided the rest.

What To Do If Your Child Is The Bully Is your child a bully? Though it may be hard to imagine your own kid intentionally hurting another person, you should know that bullying can be a sign that your son or daughter is going through something difficult.

Most kids don’t bully because they’re inherently bad, but as a reaction to something that’s going on in their lives. They may be trying to impress a new group of friends, attempting to get some attention

from the adults in their life or the victims of bullying themselves.

If you hear from a parent or teacher that your child is bullying someone, the first thing you should do is talk to them. This may help you understand what’s motivating their actions and help you determine how to proceed.

Next, it’s important that your child face meaningful consequences for their behaviour. This could involve the loss of certain

privileges for a predetermined amount of time. However, the punishment should reflect their actions. For example, if they were caught cyberbullying other students, taking away their internet or phone privileges would be appropriate.

Finally, work with your child to find ways to make the situation right with their victim. This can involve a verbal or written apology or including the bullied victim in their activities.

Speaking Out Against Bullying: What Every Kid Should Know Witnesses are present in about 85 per cent of all bullying episodes. Unfortunately, a Canadian study indicates that only 19 per cent of children who witness an incidence of bullying intervenes. However, when they do get involved, more than half of such epi­s odes will end within 10 seconds. In other words, by speaking up, bullying can often be stopped in its tracks.

STOPPING A BULLY

Here are some things kids can do to stop bullying if they see it happening at school or anywhere else: • Don’t join in or watch the bullying. Instead, walk away and try to find help for the person being bullied.

• Stand up for the person.

If it feels safe to do so, step in and verbally defend the person being bullied.

• Confront the bully. Stay

calm and tell them that what t h ey ’r e d o i n g i s n ’ t o k ay.

Sometimes that’s all it takes to make a bully change course.

Most importantly, be a friend to the person who is being bullied.

People who spend a lot of time alone are more likely to be bullied.

Live Canadian cattle prices averaged C$150 per cwt for fed steers in 2019, generating a 10.8% estimated increase in receipts from 2018. We’re projecting prices for Canadian fed steers to average C$148 per cwt in Ontario and C$155 per cwt in Alberta in 2020. Similarly, prices for Canadian feeder cattle (550 lb and 850 lb)

are expected to be in the C$218 – C$228 range. Eastern Canadian bids for cattle are projected lower as the industry deals with wider basis levels due to a decline in slaughter capacity. U.S. beef production grew 1.0% in 2019, significantly lower than the 3.1% projected at the beginning of the year by the USDA. Projections call for U.S. beef production to climb 1.2% in 2020.

Our preliminary estimate indicates Canadian beef production grew 2.8% in 2019, as more cattle were fed and slaughtered in Canada in 2019. Canadian packer utilization rates continued to be strong.

We estimate that the ratio of beef slaughtered (in federally inspected facilities) relative to capacity increased in the second half of 2019: 94.8%, up from 90.5% during the first six months, and well above the five-year average of 86.5%.

BULL BREEDERS Continuted from page 16 Several factors explain strong packer utilization: • Robust demand for beef coupled with strong processing margins • Beef processing plant closures in eastern Canada • A major U.S. beef processing plant was idle for a few months • Higher imports of U.S. live cattle into Canada • Increased culling rates in Canada due to unfavourable weather conditions We expect the Canadian processing sector to continue operating at high capacity as the January 1, 2020, cattleon-feed in Canada was estimated to be 10.7% higher compared to January 1, 2019, and 20.4% higher than the fiveyear average.

Our grains and oilseeds outlook for 2020 suggests average feed prices will be relatively similar to last year.

While unfavourable weather conditions increased feed costs in 2019, both corn and feed barley prices are expected to be

slightly lower in 2020. The combination of slightly weaker feed prices, along with slight improvements in livestock prices, means improvements in the feed ratios for cattle and hogs supporting profitability in 2020 (Table 2). Yet, profitability is expected to remain below the five-year average.

Hog prices supported by ASF, yet tariffs and large U.S. production lower upside The 2019 variability in hog profits is expected to carry into 2020. We’re forecasting 2020 average Canadian hog prices between C$78 - C$81 per cwt, a 3.4% increase from 2019. U.S. pork production grew by 5.0% in 2019, and the USDA projects will increase by 4.5% in 2020. The continued expansion of the U.S. hog sector has raised concerns relative to the U.S. slaughter capacity.

The good news is that the larger U.S. pork production is more than offset by the strong demand arising from the ASF-led decline in Chinese pork supply.

ter capacity stood at 85% in 2019, slightly below the five-year average of 88%. As U.S. hog slaughter approaches capacity throughout 2020, we expect Canadian slaughter utilization will rise. Boosting Canadian exports to China and other Asian countries will be crucial in 2020 to supporting the red meat sector. U.S. pork exports to China increased in 2019 despite China’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S. pork. Reducing tariffs on U.S. hogs into China could go a long way in supporting lean hog prices in North America.

compared to 0.7% for pork and 3.0% for chicken. The global gap between pork supply and demand is expected to lift prices for animal proteins. Although retail sales of tofu, meat and dairy alternatives climbed by 25% in 2019 (Nielsen data), and are expected to keep growing, they’re still small compared to sales of animal proteins.

The FCC Canadian beef and pork demand index remained strong in 2019.

We expect continued robustness as beef and pork remain competitive from a price standpoint relative to substitutes.

Convenience, solo-eating, snacking and quality will continue impacting food purchasing decisions.

Vermilion Lions Donation To Alberta Eye Institute

T he Ver m ili o n Li o n s Clu b donated $5,000 which will be matched

by Lions International for an ultra wide angle camera to the Alberta Eye Institute located at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton.

The new camera will allow diagnosis, assessment and monitoring for an array of eye issues including traumas and emergencies, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts and ocular melanoma.

“I wanted to help out as I was diagnosed with ocular melanoma in November of 2018. It is a ver y rare cancer with only six people in a million being diagnosed with it per year. As a result, people really don’t know about it and aren’t aware that it exists,” said Arielle Farkash.

She went on to say that at that time,

Having had to travel there for a seven minute appointment, and working in health care as a nurse, she knows that many people don’t have the means and/or support to make those types of trips; especially when they are unexpected.

“The eye institute at the Royal Alex is Vermilion’s closest eye institute and serves central and northern Alberta as well as other provinces so I wanted to help in any way I could to make this piece of equipment more accessible for anyone who may have the misfortune of needing it!” said Farkash.

She worked with the grant writer with the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation as a patient advocate for the Clarus 700 (ultra wide angle camera).

Students and staff at St. Jerome’s enjoyed a couple of “sweet” fundraisers this week. The Grade 7 class sold yummy ice cream floats and raised $614 to go towards their upcoming Telus World of Science field trip. On Thursday, Mrs. Despins Grade Four class organized a school wide bake sale for “Operation Smile” an organization that uses donations to pay for cleft palate surgeries in third world countries. Her class worked hard creating the banner, and selling the sweets. A special thank you to parent volunteer Laura Acorn, who helped throughout the morning. Thank you to everyone who made cash donations, provided delicious baking, and purchased

goods. We look forward to finding out how many surgeries we will be able to fund this year! Teachers from St. Jerome’s enjoyed attending the Endless Skies Teachers Convention this past week to further their professional learning. It was the first convention for our teachers where various school boards amalgamated, from across Alberta and even the Northwest Territories. Feedback on the sessions from our teachers has been very positive and we look forward to putting our learning into action in the classroom. Our Senior Boys basketball team defeated Lloydminster Composite High School on Saturday, winning bronze, in an exciting game. The final score was 101-94. Way to battle, boys! Our Annual Winter Carnival will be held on Thursday, March 5. Donations of gently used toys and stuffed animals are Grade 4 students, Adisen Poff, Kaelyn Ganton, and Alyssa Bodurka, work to prepare for the “Operation Smile” bake sale. being accepted at the office.

Goota Desmarais, a proud Eskimo (that is what she prefers to be called), visited VES on February 18 and 19. Each grade got to spend about an hour with her and listen to her talk about her culture. Goota said that every person is Inuit because Inuit means people. Using seal oil and arctic cotton, she showed them what a traditional fire looked like and explained that it was their only source of heat and light (in the winter) and was used for cooking. Goota showed the K-1 students the 60 letters or syllabics in the Inuktitut language and then she wrote out each student’s name in Inuktitut and had them write their Inuktitut name on their own piece of paper. She explained that igloos were not traditionally what Inuit people lived in (only for short term moves); rather they used stacked stones and seal skin to build a low home. Goota also taught the students some traditional games, but explained that games were not for fun, but rather to build strength, agility and endurance. The students even got to try

Randy Martin and Colton Wynnychuk were at VES on February 18 and 19.

They took each class into the gym and taught them a bit about lacrosse. First they explained the rules of the game.

Next, they taught the students how to pick up a ball with the stick, how to pass and throw the ball, how to cradle a ball and how to protect the ball. Near the end of the class, the students had a chance to play Hungry, Hungry Hippo lacrosse style. We thank these gentlemen for coming in to teach these skills to our students and get them excited about the game of lacrosse.

The Grade 6 VIBE Advisory are hosting games club for a few weeks during lunch recess. Grades 1-2 students get to enjoy time together playing games on February 18 and 25 and March 3. Grades 3-5 kids will take February 20 and 27 and March 5 as their days to do the same.

This is such as excellent opportunity for children to learn new board games while getting to know some new friends.

This year, Pink Shirt Day is on February 26. Students, staff, and community members are encouraged to wear pink on this day as a reminder to choose kindness. At VES, our Pink Shirt Logo Design Winner this year was Cassie Cameron.

3. If you are the single parent of a child under 18 and you live with your child and contribute to the

maintenance of the dwelling in which you both live, you can claim an eligible dependant amount of $11,809 (which is the same as the spouse or common-law partner amount for couples). The amount is reduced by any income your child earns.

4. You may claim a non-refundable tax credit for expenses relating to the adoption of a child. For 2018, the ma ximum amount of

expenses on which the credit is based is $15,905. You claim all your expenses in the year the adoption is finalized.

5. If you sold your home this year, make sure to designate it as your principal residence when you file your tax return. Failure to do so could result in the principal residence exemption being denied, which could result in the capital gain being taxable.

Lakeland College Restructures 2nd Class Power Engineering Program

O n Wednesday, O c tober 16 we held our first 4-H meeting which startedat 7:06 pm. We have a total of 19 members this year. Our members this year are Joey Eddleston, Cora Ketchum, Brooke, Teagan, Rylee and Chayce King, Zack, Brooklyn and Allison Labiuk, Jayson and Whitney Labiuk, Grayson and Locklin Mitchell, Austin Porter, Ben and Jake Tremmel, Luke, Gabe and Paul Wennekamp.

Luke is our President, Joey is Vice president, Brooke is the secretary, treasure is Zack, Historian is Gabe, club reporter is Whitney.

On November 11 we had our weigh in at Hiltz’s family farm. Once everything was weighed, tagged and vaccinated we gathered over at Ketchum’s for a potluck and our November meeting.

For our December meeting we went bowling and had pizza. Then

certificate. The goal is to upgrade jobready skills that may appeal to industry,” says Rob Collins, Lakeland’s chair of the School of Energy.

The new agreement between Lakeland and ABSA states upon completion of the entire two-year program, students can reduce their firing time by nine months of the 24 months needed.

Kitscoty 4-H Beef Club

down to business with our December meeting. This year for our winter activity we went skiing at Kinosoo Ridge and everyone enjoyed themselves. We spent the day zipping down all the hills. I never skied before and I really enjoyed my day with my cousin Brooklyn by my side.

On Februar y 18 we had our club communication night. First place for Jr. went to Paul Wennekamp with his speech titled Behold the Canine, second place went to Jake Trammel with his speech entitled S.P.C.A. First place in intemediate went to Gabe Wennekamp D.I.D. second went to Zack Labiuk with What A Leader Is. First place in Senior went to Luke Wennekamp with his speech P.E.D and Joey Eddleston got second with his speech C.T.E. Speeches are the part of 4-H I hate. So I am thankful it is over with. Now we can all get back to cud dling and c ombing our 4 - H animals. That is my favourite part!!

Innisfree-Minburn 4H Club Report – February 2020

The Innisfree-Minburn 4-H Beef Club held their February meeting on February 5.

Some of their members attended the District Dance on January 25 at the Innisfree Delnorte School and everyone had a great time.

Members attended the North-east Regional “You Be The Judge” on February 8, at the Lakeland Campus. It was a fun day and they judged sunscreen, artistic markers, and breeding heifers.

The club held their annual 4-H public speaking on February 14 at the Minburn Hall. In the Junior class, Brad McLaughlin received first place and Rylan Jack-

son second place. For the Intermediate Class, Camille Kassian won first place and Carson Kassian second place. In the Senior class, Tyson Rudolf won first place and Dylan Cannan second place.

Everyone delivered interesting and informative speeches.

Their next meeting will be held on March 4, 2020 at the Minburn Curling Rink.

Various forecasts call for at least a further 15% decline in 2020, creating a potentially large gap between demand and supply.

China’s pork retail inflation reached over 100% YoY in 2019 and pork imports are expected to increase considerably in 2020.

Despite ongoing consolidation, Chinese hog operations are rebuilding. A fasterthan-expected rebuild of the Chinese hog herd could lead to demand for red meat being below expectations. A vaccine to ASF developed in the U.S. was recently proven successful, yet it’s unknown how fast it can be deployed commercially.

China’s overall impact on global agricultural markets cannot be understated.

Consider these statistics: China consumes 27% of all global meat, with 62% of China’s meat consumption being pork. Historically, China only imported 3% of its pork requirements, given its large production capacity.

The pace of the rebuild is essential when anticipating the impact of ASF in demand for red meats.

3. China-U.S. phase one trade agreement can have mixed outcomes for Canadian livestock producers China agreed to impor t an additional US$32B of ag products from the U.S. over the 2017 import levels in 2020 and 2021. But here’s the caveat - purchases will be based on market conditions, so it’s unclear how binding purchase commitments will be.

Removing the Chinese tax on U.S. pork exports could lead to a considerable price gain for live hogs. The agreement also includes harmonization of trade rules in

the beef sector that could ultimately be extended to Canadian exporters.

But not everything in the agreement is positive. It can leave Canadian exporters out of the profitable Chinese market and scrambling to fill demand coming from markets that the U.S. exporters desert.

4. The resilience of the global and Canadian economies to be tested Trade tensions weighed on the global economy in 2019, which is estimated to have grown at 2.9% in 2019, its weakest performance since 2008-09. Many central banks (led by the U.S. Federal Reserve) proceeded to lower interest rates as insurance against a possible global slowdown.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) projects that economic growth will rebound to 3.3% in 2020, but only if trade tensions continue to ease. We expect one cut in the overnight rate for 2020 to support the resiliency of the Canadian economy.

The loonie gained value against the U.S. dollar in 2019, starting the year under US$0.74 to finish just under US$0.77. The momentum carried into 2020. Uncertainty should be a major theme of global financial markets in 2020, and we project the loonie to return towards the US$0.75 level in 2020.

5. Coronavirus outbreak can weaken the demand for meat Navigating the red meat market is complicated enough amid ASF and global trade tensions. Throw in the spread of the novel coronavirus, and the situation gets complicated, fast. Financial markets have reacted promptly in fear that a widespread and global outbreak could slow world economic growth. Red meat consumption is a function of global income. An income decline could weaken demand for proteins in emerging markets

and shift food purchasing patterns (like fewer restaurant visits).

6. Market access for Canadian red meat exports expands Implementation of the Canada-U.S.Mexico Trade Agreement (CUSMA) is expected in the second half of 2020. While market access under CUSMA remains unchanged, ratification of the agreement brings certainty.

The CETA and CPTPP trade agreements will each be in year 3 of implementation in 2020, opening opportunities for diversification. For instance, the value of beef and pork exports to the EU both increased by over 50% in 2019, yet export

volumes remain low. Exports to Japan increased by 68% and 11% respectively in 2019. The U.S. established its agreement with Japan, lowering tariffs in sync with CPTPP members starting January 1, which is likely to make the Japanese market more competitive for Canadian meat products in 2020.

Cost Of Manure Management

Manure, when used properly, is a valuable resource for the cropping or forage sectors, but handling it comes with a cost. While many producers ex tensively winter feed their cat tle which reduces or eliminates the cost a n d t i m e a s s o c i ate d w i t h m a nure removal, hauling and application, this article discusses traditional management of livestock manure.

The traditional management of livestock manure involves removal from drylot pens each spring to be utilized as fer tilizer on crop or pasture, in either raw or composted form. The application of manure has short-term and long-term effects on crop yields.

In the short term, the addition of nutrients (such as nitrogen) in manure may immediately increase yields. In the long-term, increases in yields may be due to delayed nutrient release or improvements in soil quality as the result of a series of complex interactions between the nutrients, organic matter and organisms in the manure and the existing conditions of the soil.

When discussing the cost-benefit of manure versus commercial fertilizers, previous studies have traditionally focused on the short-term effects. As manure contains lower concentrations of key nutrients than commercial fertilizers, the cost of manure handling is a key factor for determining whether m anure i s prov i d in g a c o st- ef fe c tive fer tilizer resource compared to commercial fertilizers. An important question is what is the break-even hauling distance for manure to be

cheaper than using commercial fertilizer? Research addressed this question by measuring crop response data relative to the application of manure and by using custom application rates in Saskatchewan. This study found that beef manure could be hauled anywhere from 1.0 to 7.9 km. The two key factors to explain the wide range were: (1) variable soil conditions, and (2) var ying nutrient content of the manure. An Alberta study (2006) estimated that beef feedlot manure can be hauled economically from 4.99 to 18.82 km depending upon phosphorus availability and nutrient content. The same study found the estimated total cost (including loading, hauling and spreading) for applying solid manure ranged from $3/tonne (with radius of haul < 1.6 km) to $8/tonne (with radius of haul < 8 km).

The wide range of the break-even hauling distance found in these studies shows that the evaluation of the economics of manure as a fertilizer depends on: nutrient content of the manure, type of crop, soil condition, the cost of transport, form of manure (e.g. liquid, slurr y, solid) as well as the market value of manure relative to commercial fertilizer. All of these variables are important information to estimate the economic hauling distance for a specific farm.

It should also be noted that there are different regulations about manure application and seasonal restrictions across provinces.

Small plot research trials are expensive to grow and new varieties are registered every year, so the data in the seed guide does not represent direct comparisons between varieties. For example, in the CWRS wheat tables, yield data for AAC Redberry is NOT directly comparable with AAC View field, because these varieties were never grown in the same research trials in the same year. The only fair c o m par i so n i s b et we en in d iv i d u al varieties and the check. For example, AAC Redberry can be compared with Carberry (the check variety) and AAC Viewfield can be compared with Carberry, but AAC Redberry and AAC Viewfield cannot be compared with each other.

St ar ting in 2018, t wo ad d itio nal varieties were grown as “ benchmark” checks to help growers make comparisons that are more meaningful. Since not all growers are familiar with Carberry, CDC Go and Stettler were the CWRS “benchmark” check varieties grown in 2018 and 2019. The “benchmark” checks reflect the two most popular varieties for the crop or within a market class during the previous year, based on crop insurance data. These checks will change as the popularity of varieties changes.

For each variety there are four to five

yield values reported. The overall yield is based on data from all sites where the variety was tested over multiple years. Then, yield is broken out for individual performance in Low, Medium, High and Very High Yield categories. A variety that consistently performs well in all yield categories has good yield stability and will perform well under various growing conditions. A grower located in Oyen, AB would usually look at variety performance in the Low or Medium yield categor y, whereas a grower located in Lacombe or under irrigation should look at variety performance in the High and Very High yield categories. If there are less than eight site years of data (collected over at least two growing seasons) for a yield category, yields are not reported and an “XX” is used to indicate insufficient data. This helps to avoid reporting of unreliable variety performance data.

Agronomic Traits Seed size varies from variet y to variety. Some tables provide an average thousand kernel weight (TKW).

Using a volume measurement like bush els per acre for seeding can result in vastly different planting populations depending on seed size. BULL BREEDERS Continuted from page 26 With the difficult harvests experienced in the last few years, growers should carefully consider maturity ratings of new varieties. New for 2020, maturity ratings have been changed and are reported based on the average differences in days, relative to the check. This data has been collected from several growing seasons over Alberta’s vast agricultural production area. However, these values are relative. Hot, dry conditions will compress the reported maturity differences just as cool, wet conditions will expand them. For example, a variety of CWRS wheat may mature in 98 days in Lethbridge, but take 103 days in Edmonton. Likewise, a twoday difference in maturity between varieties in southern Alberta may amount to a five-day difference in a more northerly location.

Disease Resistance

It is important to know that the small plot research trials are grown without the use of foliar fungicides. This allows yield data to reflect genetic differences between cultivars for disease resistance. Under disease pressure, the application of a foliar fungicide may significantly increase yields on some cultivars.

The disease ratings provided in the tables are based on variety registration data that is collected from inoculated disease nurseries and it may be updated based on the breakdown of genetic resistance as disease pathotypes change and adapt.

Fusarium head blight (FHB), caused by Fusarium graminearum and other Fusarium species, is an increasing problem in Alberta. Durum wheat is the most susceptible, followed by, spring and winter wheat, triticale, barley and oat, which is the least susceptible cereal. It is important to know

that a resistant (R) tolerance rating for FHB does not equate to immunity. Under severe epidemics, all varieties will sustain damage. All seed should be tested for the presence of FHB and treated with an appropriate seed treatment. Producers are advised to choose varieties with the best FHB tolerance whenever possible and always use best management practices to slow the spread of this disease.

Quality Traits Variety selection should also be based on the anticipated quality of the harvested product. Pre-harvest sprouting resistance ratings provide an indirect indication of falling number maintenance under conditions conducive to sprouting. A variety with a “P” or “Poor” sprouting rating is more likely to sprout under cool, wet conditions prior to harvest than a variety with a “VG” or “Very Good” rating. Reductions in falling number are an indication that the germi-

nation process has started, even though it may not be visible. It is also important to know that under long periods of wet cool weather at harvest, all varieties, regardless of rating, are susceptible to sprouting and reductions in falling number.

Growers struggling to achieve minimum protein requirements should also consider the protein data for a variety. For example, a variety with +0.7% protein relative to the check will likely have higher grain protein concentration (under the same management and environmental conditions) than a variety with a -0.3% protein rating.

Submitted The canine members of the club met January 19 to work on dog agility and tricks for the afternoon.

All members met January 24 for their regular monthly meeting along with a Communications workshop conducted by Jim Storch.

Members went to Axe throwing in Lloydminster on January 31 for their Christmas party. At this event members also went rock wall climbing, log lifting and had a gift exchange, snack and a visit. Everyone had fun!
