The Vermilion Ridge Riders Snowmobile Club hosted their 2nd Annual Snowmobile Drag Races by the SSRA at the Vermilion Airport on January 25 - 26.

Racers from all over Alber ta and Saskatchewan attended and enjoyed the two days of excitement. Straightline Snowmobile Racing Associate (SSRA) ran the sanctioned races with classes for professionals and amateurs. The event was family friendly with racers

of all ages.

Vermilion Ridge Riders president, Warren Young s ai d, “ T he adrenaline of racing and the different things people have done with modifications are interesting to see. The creativity and funds invested into snowmobile modifications is ridiculous!”

Work-Stress-Life “Striking A Balance” Conference

Approximately 290 people attended the 4th Annual Work-Stress-Life “Striking A Balance” Conference at the Vermilion Regional Centre on January 22.

Participants had the opportunity to hear from multiple speakers and visit wellness vendors and agencies. Participants came from St. Paul, Edgerton, Wainwright, Lloydminster, Camrose, St. Brides, and Outlook Saskatchewan.

There were several door prizes, and even a mini session for college students in the evening.

The Vermilion Public Library hosted a ‘Cannabis in our Community’ event with speakers from local retailers, the RCMP, and mental health representatives on January 23.

RCMP Cst. Melanie Michaud, shared the effects of cannabis including altered perceptions of time, distance and speed; difficulty concentrating; short term memory problems; increased heart rate; increased appetite; sedation; and damage to lungs.

“Cannabis must be inaccessible to drivers and occupants. When transporting cannabis in a truck it should be in the box, or when in a car it should be in the trunk,” said Cst. Michaud.

Peace Officer Chris Fithen spoke about bylaws in Vermilion and suggested for people to consult the local bylaws wherever they go, as they can vary extremely from place to place.

Addictions Counsellor, Keily Stetson said, “A substance is something we take that changes the way we think, act, or feel. THC is still a psychoactive drug that is addictive. It is important to discuss the reasons for using cannabis as some people are looking for other ways to achieve the same benefits.”

She went on to remind the audience that brains aren’t fully developed until the mid 20’s so suggested putting off cannabis use as a youth. She also warned that with edibles, some people don’t think they work right away and take more than is recommended, resulting in cannabis poisoning.

Tim Hortons Donates To KidSport

The Vermilion Tim Hortons donated $2,8 61 from the Smile Cook ie Campaign to Vermilion KidSpor t on January 23.

According to representative, Derek Young, Vermilion KidSport serves all of the County of Vermilion River as well as children in Mannville, helping remove the financial barrier for their families. “ On average Vermilion KidSpor t helps 33 children per year, and this year just under $7,000 was given to children. For the past four years, more funds have been given out than we have received in donations. Donations are critical; it’s important to have

donations like the one from Tim Hortons or individuals to make this possible,” said Young.

He went on to say that any sport can be supported; the skating club, vo l l ey b a l l, b a s ke t b a l l, h o c key, soccer, dance, taekwondo, etc.

Lakeland College Post Secondary Night

Student Services held a Post Secondary Night at Lakeland College Vermilion on January 22.

Families came to check out what Lakeland College had to offer, and began preparing for their futures.

“We wanted to find a different way to reach out to the community and give back by providing information on post secondary education. Our team is really knowledgeable, and the biggest thing I find is that many people think that Lakeland College is in their backyard so they can come anytime.

We also understand that life is busy and wanted to encourage people so that even if all they have is 10 minutes, to stop by and see us.

We want to show people the reasons that exist for them to enroll now. This was

an informal night to ask questions, find answers, and potentially take a tour or set up tours. We provided high school students, parents, and those looking for a career change the opportunity to come in and see what programs are available to them. We provided additional help to determine required pre-requisites, financial aid, and transfer pathways. The possibilities that Lakeland College offers are international.

The hand-on component and industry driven courses allow students to have more advanced technical skills and we are growing our student body with people coming from all over the world, and provide opportunities for students to travel internationally,” said Enrollment Specialist, Dana Gard.

She went on to say that attending an event like this provides people information whether they attend Lakeland College, or any other post secondary institution. Over-

March 10, 1923 – January 21, 2020 Allen Ronaghan passed away peacefully in Edmonton in the early hours of January 21.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Ellen (Hemphill) Ronaghan, three daughters; May (Mel) Lungle, Beth (Bruce Hinman) Ronaghan and Stella (Don) Welsh; six grandchildren, Nancy (Nathanael Sapara) Welsh, Don (Aja Humphreys) Welsh, Allen Welsh, Christopher Hinman, Jennifer (Justin) Saghbini, Seth Hinman, and two great-grandchildren Nora Sapara and Levi Humphreys.

Allen was born and raised in the Islay district. He went to Normal School in Edmonton, taught one year in Fahler and then returned to school receiving his BEd from the University of Alberta. He met Shirley in Tofield where they were both teaching and were married in Edmonton on April 16, 1949. After his three daughters were grown and gone, he returned to school receiving his Masters degree from the University of Saskatchewan and his Doctorate in Western Canadian History at the University of Manitoba. Allen spent all his adult life researching and writing about local histories.

He published 14 books in the course of his life, along with dozens of research papers. In 2018 he was made an honourary chief of the Siksika Nation, Eagle Chief, as recognition of him assisting them in reclaiming their lost history.

He is pre-deceased by his parents, Nora Tot Omness Ronaghan Williamson, Arthur Edgar Ronaghan, his step-father Tom Williamson and his brother Jim Ronaghan and sister Rena Sherwood.

There will be a celebration of life at the United Church in Vermilion Alberta on January 30, 2020 at 1 p.m. Family interment of the ashes in the Islay Cemetery to follow.

Research studies have found that a substance in tomatoes called alphatomatine helps to prevent cancer of the prostate. Current research has shown that alpha-tomatine causes apoptosis (cell death) of prostate cancer cells and nonsmall lung cancer cells. Further studies have shown that a diet rich in tomatoes correlated with a lower risk of Alzheimer’s and obesity. Tomatoes are an excellent source of vitamin C, and Vitamin A. They are also a good source of vitamin K, vitamin E manganese and many other nutrients. Tomatoes are from the nightshade family, so they may not be beneficial to everyone, as some people are sensitive or allergic to nightshade foods. Swiss Steak 2 1/2 pounds of meat cubed 1 large onion chopped large 2 potatoes cubed large 4 carrotts, sliced into 1/2 inch lenghts 2 cloves of garlic ( chopped) 1 can of crushed or cubed tomatoes 28 fl ounces 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1/4 teaspoon ground bay (optional) 1 tablespoon worcestershiire sauce Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Combine all the ingredients into a heavy bottomed dutch oven or roaster. Stir. Bake for 2 hours hours.

Anders Aalborg was a young man who was born in the Vermilion District in August of 1914, with Dr. G.L. Cooke coming in from Lloydminster to deliver him.

His parents were highly involved in education and literature and they would help to organize the Orville School District in 1918, and would serve on the Board of Trustees for many years until the school itself closed in 1942. His parents were also active with the United Farmers of Alberta, and would often attend provincial meetings with their son, which would have a deep impact on

him later in life.

Aalborg would start school in 1921, without being able to speak English and would repeat the first grade. By the time he completed Grade 8 in 1927, he would stay at home on the farm the following year as there was no Grade 9 in the area. Eventually, he would go and attend Chauvin High School, followed by one year at Edmonton Normal School. While there, he met John Barnett, who would get him interested in the Alberta Teachers’ Alliance.

This would lead him to getting his certificate in 1936 to be a teacher, and in 1939 with the establishment of the Vermilion School Division, he would begin teaching in the area.

He would join the Provincial Executive

of the Alberta Teachers Association and would serve as vice-president from 1945 - 1946.

Following this, he became interested in provincial politics and he was persuaded to become a Social Credit candidate in the federal election for the Saskatchewan riding of the Battleford. He won the nomination and conducted his campaign, even though he would eventually lose.

In 1948, he ran with the Social Credit Party in the provincial election and would find himself elected to the Legislature.

Four years later, on Sept. 8, 1952, he received a call from Premier Ernest Manning to come and see him in Ottawa.

He would soon find out that he was being sworn in as the Minister of Education.

As he would say in his recollection, “From that day to this, I have enjoyed a very busy and interesting life.”

He would serve as Minister of Education until 1964, and his political career would run from 1948 - 1971. In 1964, Aalborg became the Provincial Treasurer. Aalborg had a good chance of becoming the next premier after Manning but instead chose to retire due to poor health in 1971.

He would pass away in Surrey on Feb. 13, 2000 at the age of 85.

Vermilion RCMP Investigate Attempted Robbery

– T h e Ve r m i l i o n RCMP are investigating an attempted robbery on Jan. 18 where shots were fired and a struggle ensued. No persons were injured, and the suspect fled with no money.

At 2:53 a.m., RCMP were dispatched.

Investigation reveals that a heavy set masked male carrying what was believed to be a .22 rifle attempted to rob a hotel in Innisfree. As he entered the closed hotel, he fired two shots from the rifle. A struggle with a hotel employee, ensued which ended with both subjects outside.

Dear Editor February 2, World Wetlands Day, forces all of us to come to terms with an environmental crisis happening right in our own backyard. It’s a crisis just as damaging as those being experienced by rainforests, coral reefs and the Australian Outback.

The loss of wetlands in Alberta, in Canada and around the world continues at an incredible rate. Using historical data and mapping, it’s estimated that 70 per cent of wetlands in settled areas of Canada are no longer. And, just as damaging as wetland loss is to people and the planet, so too is the decline of biodiversity that occurs when these valuable ecosystems are lost.

This year’s theme for World Wetlands Day is Wetlands and Biodiversity. Biodiversity is a measure of the variety of plants and animals in an environment.

High biodiversity is an indicator that the environment is healthy; reduced biodiversity is a warning that the environment and ecosystems are under stress, have been damaged or are being damaged. When species are lost, the impact is perpetual.

At home, Canada’s State of the Birds report says that our country has lost 40 to 60 per cent of shorebird, grassland bird, and aerial insectivore (birds that feed on insects while flying such as swallows) populations. A North American study reveals that nearly three billion birds have disappeared since 1970 in Canada and the U.S. It’s an alarming statistic that sheds light to an overlooked biodiversity crisis.

Often wetland loss is the result of human activity past and present. While we know the value of wetlands relative to biodiversity and the environment, we continue to lose wetlands outright and

damage many of those that remain.

But there is hope. Work by Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) and its many partners is helping bird populations – especially waterfowl – make a comeback, and in some cases, thrive. The DUC community which includes landowners, donors, volunteers, staff, government, scientific experts, outdoor enthusiasts and industry stands committed to conserving wetlands and the biodiversity they support through science-based efforts and programs.

A Wedding Dress You Can Dance In They may look striking, but many wedding gown styles restrict your movements, making it hard to dance.

Vermilion Nominated For Kraft Hockeyville

The Vermilion Stadium was nominated for Kraft Hockeyville, a national competition with communities vying for the grand prize of an NHL game and $250,000 in arena upgrades.

Members of the Facility Enhancement Group are asking residents to rally behind their community and go online to suppor t the Vermilion Stadium.

Photos and stories of Vermilion families enjoying the Vermilion Stadium and the need for upgrades can be found online at krafthockeyville.ca. After searching ‘Alberta’ and ‘Vermilion Stadium,’ you can register and answer three questions about Vermilion’s communit y spirit and passion for hockey, the need for upgrades, etc. which counts for 80 percent of the judging score. B e a host far m or ran c h for the eighth annual event, August 15 and 16, 2020, across Alberta. Registration is now open for farms and ranches to be part of the next edition of Open Farm Days.

The weekend showcases Alberta’s agriculture industry and growing rural tourism sector. Host farms open their gates to share their agricultural experiences with their urban neighbours and to help them understand where their food comes from.

In 2019, more than 150 host farms were part of Open Farm Days, and 29

culinary events helped connect urban and rural Albertans. Host farms have included traditional farms, livestock - bison, cattle, alpaca, sheep, llama, goat, poultr y - farms and ranches, organic operations, corn mazes, wineries, meaderies, craf t breweries, stables, petting zoos, along with h o ney, fr uit, ve g et a b le, gr ain an d u-pick farms.

Since 2013, Open Farm Days has seen nearly 125,000 person visits, injecting close to $900,000 into the rural economy through on-farm sales.

Since its launch, 634 Alberta farms have been enjoyed by the public.

Register to become a host farm

Host farms can par ticipate either day or both days, and educational materials about hosting are available.

Open Farm Days will host 2 workshops in the spring that will focus on marketing, social media and culinary for those interested in learning in a networking environment.

Material is available for farms interested in adding a culinar y piece to their event, including: • Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) regulations • connecting and collaborating • food sampling and demos • long table dinners

For 2020, farms that want to showcase craft beverages from local brewers and distillers with their event have a new opportunity. An approved brewery partner with and AGLC licence that identifies food on premise will be able to apply at no cost for a caterers extension. Alberta Pulse Growers Needed For Survey

This survey will inform the work that looks at the environmental benefit of pulses.

The pulse industry is collecting data on the environmental footprint of pea and lentil production in Western Canada.

“This survey will help our industry tell the good news story of pulse crops and continue building our understanding of the good work initiated in 2015 with the Alberta Field Pea LCA,” says Nevin Rosaasen, policy and program specialist with the Alberta Pulse Growers.

Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF) is both a partner and stakeholder in this work that Pulse Canada is leading.

“This work will provide the industry with credible information on their environmental performance of pea and lentil production in support of the increasing market demands for sustainability information,” says Kerrianne Koehler-Munro, environmental program specialist with AF. Producers taking the survey will share their production data. Individual farm data will not be disclosed, and confidentiality of that data is assured.

“We understand that producers’ time is valuable, and the survey process of estimating fuel and partitioning electricity use can be difficult,” Rosaasen adds.

“However, this information is critical to the long term positioning for pulse grow-

Agriculture Financial Services Corporation Announces Enhancements To Perennial Crop Insurance Programs

Lacombe, AB, January 23, 2020 – Working in agriculture requires the ability to withstand unpredictable events.

To protect producers from designated perils that lead to production loss, Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) provides a number of perennial crop insurance options as part of their suite of business risk-management programs.

In response industry feedback, AFSC made adjustments to our Perennial Crop Insurance programs and is pleased to announce we have made the following

enhancements for 2020: • Recalculated historical pasture normal yields for 2020, resulting in an increase to coverage for pasture insurance. On average, pasture normal yields have increased approximately 55 per cent for 2020. The enhanced coverage levels ensure clients receive higher compensation in the event of a loss.

• Updated methodology to determine price options to better reflect feed replacement cost in the event of a loss.

• Adjusted minimum daily precipitation threshold of 0.1 mm for moisturebased products (Moisture Deficiency Insurance and Moisture Deficiency

Endorsement). This means that moisture recorded at less than 0.1mm is now considered zero precipitation. This change addresses instances of evaporation of small amounts of precipitation, which will not count towards total moisture accumulation.

• Added weather stations to AFSC’s network, near Iddesleigh and east of Drumheller. Clients can choose one, two or three weather stations within proximity of their land base to best represent conditions on their farm.

nership (CAP). The CAP agreement demonstrates both Canada and Alberta’s commitment to agriculture, reflects input from across the sector and strives to deliver programs that are responsive to the needs of producers. Federal and provincial governments support AgriInsurance programs by paying all administration expenses, while sharing premium costs with clients.

S t . J e r o m e ’s w a s bustling with excitement on Thursday, January 23, as we hosted Grade 6 students from schools in the surrounding area to participate in the annual VIBE day. VIBE coaches from the area, staff, and student volunteers from St. J worked hard to set up the school in preparation for the event. Students rotated in mixed groups through seven various workshops, hosted by different teachers, school staff, and representatives from outside agencies, such as AHS and the RCMP. They learned about friendship skills, physical health and nutrition, mindfulness, vaping, self-reflection and compassion, and team building. When I spoke with the students, there was nothing but excitement and positive feedback flowing from them. Aubree Sunderland, a Grade 6 student from Kitscoty Elementary School (KES), contemplated what she had learned while creating a self-portrait.

She was curious to discover that she could use words to describe the internal qualities that she was proud of, all while building a beautiful piece of watercolour artwork.

In that session, students learned about self-compassion and the importance and power of our thoughts in our daily lives.

Family g ames night, put on by the VIBE advisory students, was supposed to be held on January 16. Due to the tremendously cold temperatures, it was postponed until the evening of March 12. We hope to see many of you there, as it will be a come and go evening from 5:30 to 7:30.

Grade 3 students from both classes have been enjoying time spent at the pool, learning new skills and techniques.

The only downside is having to come out into the frigid cold with wet hair. We are so fortunate to have the swimming facility in our town. Many thanks to the instructors for giving our students the opportunity to become better swimmers.

Another wonderful facility that VES is fortunate to get to use is the outdoor rink, situated right by our playground.

This past week, the Grade 5 students were out enjoying skating time as part

She had lots of fun meeting new friends from all over the area. Grayden Pratt, from KES, said the highlights of his day were the obstacle course, and the delicious burritos served for lunch! Students had an opportunity to learn about the dangers of vaping from an addictions counsellor. The Grade Six students were surprised that the nicotine present in vaping products had a negative impact on their mental health, as well as being dangerous to their physical health. Nicotine in these products is especially harmful to developing brains, potentially causing increased irritability, impulsivity, and difficulties regulating mood and emotions. VIBE coach Kari Thompson spoke about how the variety of events, and the fact that students had opportunities for physical activity, relaxation, and art, allows this day to meet the needs of every student. It was a team effort on behalf of many to create a meaningful and memorable day for students.

Our Junior and Senior Basketball teams have been hard at work, practicing, playing league games, and playing in tournaments on the weekend. Mr. Wheat, coach of the Junior Boys team, commented that his team is constantly improving and learning new systems to better their offense.

Kalida Kennedy, coach of the Grade 8/9 girls team said that her team has been

learning defense and developing their individual skills, working especially hard on their dribbling, accuracy of shots, and layups. Our Senior Boys team, coached by Mr. Sader, won bronze at the Holy Rosary tournament this past weekend. Way to go Spartans!

Grade 12 student Megan Krys will be receiving the 2019 Senator’s Contribution Award from the Honourable Doug Black, Q.C., Alberta Senator, in recognition of her 4-H success in 2019. The award specifically recognizes 4-H’ers named 4H

His full name is “Frisbee Rob” McLeod and he is a motivational speaker and frisbee ambassador from Calgary, with six Guinness World Records and 13 World Championships. Frisbee Rob’s message includes information about resiliency, kindness, learning from failure, and getting unplugged. His workshops will focus on physical literacy, teaching throwing and catching, running and playing games. “These averages are calculated from the individual producer’s data collected for the 2018 growing season through the AgriProfit$ program,” explains Manglai, crop economist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

“This tool gives us a good handle on the producers’ actual costs, revenues and margins by soil zones for different crops and forages,” he explains.

“Even better, this tool also provides the costs and returns for the top third producers where we have data available. It gives producers the opportunity to compare themselves to the top producers.”

Manglai says that in past years, the crops and forages benchmarks mainly focused on regional comparisons.

“As the pro gram has grown, so

has the ability to produce provincial ben c hmar ks. The provin c ial level benchmark can highlight the production and management practices that are driving enterprise costs of production and profitability. In other words, regional and provincial benchmarks will provide additional information to producers achieving higher levels of profitability over time.”

Producers can use these benchmarks in various ways depending on their participation in AgriProfit$.

“If the producer has participated in the program, they can simply download the benchmarks of the soil zone of their farm’s location,” says Manglai. “The producer can then understand whether they are in the average group of producers, or they are in the top third group. If they are in the average group, they can even identify some of the cost and revenue items

for improvement by comparing to the top third.”

If the producer has not participated in AgriProfit$, they can look at the benchmarks for the soil zones where their farm is located.

“They can then compare their own farm record to the benchmark averages and top third for the different c ro ps. T hi s prov i d es t hem a wit h good idea of where their farm stands compared to the averages group and the top third.”

Crops and forages benc hmarks for 2018 have been published for b lac k , brow n, d ar k brow n, Peac e Region (thin black soil zone) and grey wooded soil zones as well as provincial dryland soil zone.

Manglai points out that the costs and returns do not reflect the entire soil zone due to the limited sample size.

The Cows and Chaos - Feed, Forage and Management Strategies webinar series gets underway Thursday, January 30, 2020 at 1 pm.

This edition of the series will be covering topics producers face in late winter and early spring - from maintaining stored forage to this year’s calving season, and making the most out of your livestock on pasture.

Cattle And Cold Temperatures

Ways to lessen the stress created by the latest cold snap on livestock.

Barr y Yaremcio, beef and forage specialist at the Alber ta Ag-Info Centre, says to st ar t by ad justing rations to meet requirements, as there is a limit to the amount of heat cattle can produce by digesting feed.

“Cattle can stay warm down to -20 C without wind chill, and the heat from digestion when they consume their feed will keep them warm. I am referring specifically to cattle, but these principles apply to other animals that are staying outside.”

It is a natural response for animals to eat more feed when it gets cold.

Provide extra hay or silage along with extra grain. Feed intake changes when the temperature drops below -20 C. “You can’t just let them pick extra h ay or p i c k str aw of f t h e b e d d in g pack to make up the intake differential,” he adds. “Straw is a low protein, high fibre, low energy feed that takes a long time for the animals to digest. If they eat extra straw, the total protein content in the ration goes down, and bacteria can’t digest the fibre. In realit y, their feed intake in realit y may drop 2, 3 or 4 pounds a day, and the animals will drop condition by eating only extra straw.”

“At -30 C, increase grain intake by an extra 2 lb of grain per head per day over and above what was previously being fed at -20 C. If temperatures drop to -40 C, 4 lb of extra grain per head per day needs to be added.”

Thin animals get cold faster than those that are in good shape, as they do not have the fat layer that provides insulation. “The recommendation of 4 lb of additional grain during the cold weather might have to be stepped up to 6 or 7 lb to maintain their body weight or hopefully get them to gain a little bit,” he explains. “It is difficult to do in cold weather but it is possible.”

Next, producers need to be concerned with the protein content of the ration.

“If the ration’s protein content is not adequate, the microbial populations cannot reproduce efficiently, as some of those microbes are needed to digest the fibre in the feeds. If the fibre is not digested efficiently, feed intake will be reduced, restricting the amount of nutrients the animal is getting.”

He says that one way to evaluate the protein content of the ration is to look at the manure. “If the ration contains adequate amounts of protein for proper rumen function, the ‘pats’ will be flat and appear normal. If the ration is deficient in protein, the pats will be more pyramid shaped and be rough in appearance.”

Providing shelter behind a wind fence and providing a lot of bedding helps reduce the amount of energy needed for an animal to keep warm.

If possible, move the thinnest animals into a barn to protect them from the weather.

“A cow laying on snow could potentially lose 25% of her body heat, especially if that snow is wet or the animal has a dirty hair coat.”

He adds that the implications of not lessening the stress from cold temperatures could compromise the animals.

“During cold weather, cows can lose anywhere between 1 to 3 lb a day. If the cow is losing weight in the last trimester of pregnancy, there could be more calving difficulties because the

That is when the large weight losses can occur.”

“Colostrum quantity – and possibly quality – will be compromised if the cow is losing weight prior to calving. The calf may not be as healthy or get up as rapidly after birth if the cow has lost weight in the cold weather.

You could have a few more problems with disease. A cow with very little fat reser ve will not be able to produce as much milk as one that is in good condition. The growth rate of the calf could probably reduce as well. Long term, if that cow stays skinny all the way through lactation, reproductive efficiency can be reduced by 20 to 30%.”
