The Clandonald Ag Society hosted their 17th Annual ‘Hay’ Clandonald event on January 17.

Approximately 200 people attended and enjoyed a selection of door prizes and auction items as well as a mental health wellness presentation and a comedian.

Health Promotion Facilitator for Alberta Health Services, Neil Harris, spoke about mental health wellness in farming and said, “Farming is one of the higher risk occupations for suicide in Alberta. Men account for 75 per cent of all suicides in Alberta.”

He went on to encourage people to talk to someone, and look for counsellors like they look for a hairdresser; finding one that works for them. He encouraged talking to friends, neighbours, family, listening when needed, and to take note when people withdraw from society.

“It was a very important and tough message, but one that was needed at this

The Mannville I.D.A. Pharmacy was broken into for the third time on January 11, causing $5,000 damage.

Pharmacist, Ahmed Abdelrahman, said that the first time occurred just three weeks after opening in March 2019 without much damage; and the second time was in October 2019 with $25,000 damage.

Growing dishear tened, Abdelrahman said he was shocked when the three break ins occurred in less than one year because he thought small towns were safer than big cities. He said his experience was so frustrating, especially when there was a lot of damage done; and the police or any other sources have not given him

“Pharmacies are where you get your medication from and are so important in a small town. Especially when these communities have seniors because often it is so hard for them to drive, and so it is more convenient for them to get their regular medications like blood pressure and diabetic medicine.

Pharmacies are very important for any communit y, for example if you have a child who has fever, you will run to the nearest pharmacy to get something for the fever and my pharmacy serves Mannville and surrounding communities as well like Innisfree, Minburn, and farms.

I stopped stocking narcotics after the second break in, so now if a

patient is waiting for one, I only order it for the second day and do not stock it in the pharmacy at all. Hopefully we will have help from the police to stop crimes in rural areas. There have been a lot of break-ins in Mannville, not only to the pharmacy, but also to other small businesses who also had multiple break-ins. We are hoping for help to stop it.

I like being a pharmacist because I like helping people with their health. I hope to continue helping the community with their pharmacy needs. Especially in Mannville, people are ver y nice and friendly, so I hope to be able to continue helping them. You could even spread them with jam. I have also rolled this dough out for a pizza crust, and added the pizza Italian tomato paste, the toppings, which included sauteed onions and lots of bacon and cheese and it was a delicious homemade treat. The crust does not have that traditional yeast bread flavour and texture. It is a little more biscuit like. I have also split these breadsticks open when cold and built lit tle ham and cheese gluten and yeast free sandwiches.

has its own consistency, and it varied greatly from basic natural yogurt to a thicker Greek yogurt, which you can use as well. You can also skip the dill and instead use Italian seasoning, parmesan cheese or Greek seasoning. You can really have fun designing and creating your own ar tisan bread sticks. They are great to use for dipping. Dipping sauce ideas are an Italian spiced tomato sauce, a ranch dressing, marinara sauce or alfredo sauce. These bread sticks are also great to accompany homemade soups and stews. My sons comment, when he tasted them fresh out of the oven was that he wanted to eat the whole pan. I concur.

Dill and Garlic Bread Sticks 1 cup flour (regular or gluten free) 1 cup natural yogurt (dairy or coco-

nut) 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1 teaspoon dill weed 1 teaspoon dried minced garlic 1/4 pepper (optional) Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. In a mixing bowl add the flour, sprinkle on the baking powder, salt and spices, stir to blend the dry ingredients. Stir in the yo g ur t. The mix ture should have the consistency of a dough, so if it is too soft add a little more flour.

Place on a floured surface, and flour the top of the dough to roll out. Roll to the thickness of 1/2 inch to 3/4 of an inch. Cut into strips that are about 1 1/4 inches wide. Placed on a greased cookie sheet (sprinkle with salt or parmesan cheese optional) and bake at 375 degree for 17 -19 minutes.

Kitscoty Rcmp Investigate Theft Of Vehicle - Shots Fired Submitted Kitscoty, Alta. – On Jan. 13, 2020 at approximately 12:03 a.m., Kitscoty RCMP responded to a report of a vehicle theft north of Kitscoty at a rural residence.

A victim was checking suspicious activity near a relative’s residence and went inside. While inside a truck pulled into the driveway and a female suspect stole the victim’s SUV as it was still running in the driveway.

The victim came out and a confrontation ensued. The victim then proceeded to safety back into the residence when two shots were fired from the truck which hit the residence. No one was injured.

Patrols were made in the area for the

two vehicles but they were not immediately located. The SUV was later found abandoned in Onion Lake, Saskatchewan. The truck which was previously reported stolen from Dewberry, was found abandoned near Range Road 12 northeast of Kitscoty.

The female suspect is described as 5’6”, dark complexion with long black hair.

Kitscoty RCMP continue to investigate and ask anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Kitscoty RCMP at 780-846-2870. Subsequent to the numerous articles and news stories regarding the Kenny UCP tightening the budgets of Education and School Divisions, I was puzzled to see two ads in the January 7, issue advertising for 1) Social Emotional Coach and 2) Mental Health Professional. Both of these positions h ave ver y h i g h q u ali fi c at i o n s an d presumably pay commensurate.

Instead of education are we now providing Mental Health counselling? Is this not a duplication of

And the final question; is this decision fiscally responsible during the current economic environment?

Tax Tips

1. Make sure you file your tax return on time if you have a balance due, even if you cannot pay them right away. By doing so, you will at least avoid the late filing penalty. This is currently calculated as five percent of your balance due, plus one percent per month for a maximum of 12 months.

2. If you turn 19 before April 1, 2020, make sure you file a 2018 income

tax return in order to receive the GST/HST credit. You will get at least one GST/HST Credit cheque for the payment dates following your birthday. For example, if you turn 19 in March 2020, you will receive the last quarterly payment for the July 2019 to June 2020 benefit period, which is paid in April 2020.

3. Contributions to a political party get a bigger tax credit than contributions to charities. In fact, for federal

political contributions you get a credit of 75% on your first $400 contributed. If you are contributing to a political party or candidate in this year’s election, make sure to keep your receipts for political contributions separate from your charitable receipts.

4. O ld charitable donation receipts that you forgot to claim in previous years should not be thrown away.

Charitable donation receipts are good for five years after the year in

which the donation was made.

5. I f you are a resident of Ontario, N ew B r u n s w i c k , M a n i t o b a o r Saskatc hewan, you will begin paying the federal carbon tax on April 1, 2019. That is the bad news.

The good news is that the government is refunding you what you will have to pay upfront in the form of the Climate Action Incentive. This is a refundable tax credit which you can only get by filing an income tax return.

Aging Crisis In Canada Puts Caregivers Under Stress

(NC) With the rise in numbers of our senior population and the prevalence of chronic conditions, the number of people needing assistance is forecast to double over the next 30 years.

Today, 8.1 million unpaid caregivers are an integral part of the healthcare system. They require recognition and concrete supports as their role in the healthcare system intensifies.

The 2018 Canadian Carers Pulse Sur vey revealed that 49 per cent of respondents said they had no one to speak with about their day-to-day experiences as a caregiver, with 50 per cent feeling that they are unheard or misunderstood by the people around them.

The new Caregiver Friendly Pharmacy Program is now available to help connect caregivers with the most

accessible members of the healthcare system – pharmacists. Through education tools, an online suppor t network, and insightful checklists, the program can help them deliver care and advocate for their loved ones with increased knowledge, confidence and support from their pharmacy team who understands their needs as well.

Mike Boivin, a pharmacist consultant who cares for his adult daughter with autism, says the key to optimizing the pharmacist-caregiver relationship is for carers to “self-identify” their role and ask for help. “Caregivers need to identify issues early on with family, pharmacists and the healthcare team to have a plan in place,” he says. “With that, the care of a loved one is much more manageable, especially during times of crisis.”

The support program was developed af ter ex tensive research from more than 2,000 caregivers and nonc ar e g i ver s to u n d er s t a n d their experiences and information needs. This research found that c aregiving has an enormous impact on the lives of the people who provi d e it, af fe c t ing t hem on many levels – including their emotional and physical health and their social and family lives.

Growing Interest From Spanish Beef Buyers

Alber ta Agriculture and Forestr y (AF) collaborated with Canada Beef and the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association to lead an incoming mission for Spanish beef buyers from September 8 to 13, 2019. The delegation included six major buyers and distributors along with a journalist from Beef! Magazine.

and site visits to the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association’s head office, the University of Calgary’s W.A. Anderson Ranch, a feed yard, beef processors and Canada Beef’s Centre of Excellence. During the program, buyers engaged directly with potential suppliers and saw first-hand how cattle were raised and handled at each stage in the supply chain. By visiting ranchlands and state - of-the -ar t packing plants, the buyers gained full confidence in Alberta’s ability to produce top-quality beef. They also saw how select producers comply with Europ e a n U n i o n (EU) c e r t i f i c at i o n - a necessary requisite for exporting to the EU. The program left a strong impression on the buyers. They found the mission provided the contacts and information they hoped for when travelling to

Alberta. One buyer remarked that the mission was an excellent opportunity to import beef from Alberta.

“This has been a great opportunity to visit and learn about your country,” remarked one buyer. “I hope that we develop a future business that is longlasting and prosperous.”

T h e b u ye r s a r e c u r r e n t l y w a i t ing for Canadian suppliers to receive EU certification. Once they are certified, the buyers will be ready to start moving Canadian beef into Spain on a consistent basis. The mission established a relationship that will be fruitful for years to come.

The Spanish market provides an exc e l l e n t o p p o r t u n i t y f o r A l b e r t a expor ters. In 2018, Alber ta did not rec ord any beef expor ts to Spain.

However, with the recent ratification

of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) bet ween Canada and the EU, there is opportunity for growth in Spain and the rest of the EU market. CETA provides Canada with preferential market access to the EU’s more than 500 million consumers and eliminates close to 94% of European import tariffs on agricultural products. In 2018, Alberta exported beef to the U.K ., the Netherlands, France and Germany, with the UK being the largest EU buyer at $7.6 million, followed closely by the Netherlands at $7.1 million.

This weeks’ cold blast has been intense, as rural buses have not been running and recesses have all had to be inside. Classes are still in full swing and students have done their best to keep themselves entertained while being cooped up during recesses.

Favourite indoor recess activities have been jumping on a mini trampoline, seeing how long of a unifix block train you can build before the bell goes, playing with Lego, drawing and writing on the whiteboard, and creating playdough master pieces. Please make sure that you are still sending your child with appropriate winter clothing every day.

St. Jerome’s School News

Grade 3 students in Mrs. Martin’s class were figuring out how “old” their ears were by completing hearing tests on YouTube. This fun activity kicked off their Sound unit in science and they can’t wait to build their musical instruments to really put their hearing to the test.

Grade 1’s in Ms. Svenungard’s class have been playing pat-a-cake as they count by fives. They are getting better at connecting hands to clap with their friends and can now count by 5’s all the way to 100! Using watercolours, crayons, and following their teacher’s directions, students in Mrs. Martin’s Grade 1 class created beautiful polar bear works of art. The Prodigy Math Game has taken the Gr 2/3 and Grade 4 class by storm this week. When they login, students take a quick quiz to assess

As we move into a new calendar year, we are sad to announce that Sarah Popil has left our school as our Social Emotional Coach. We wish Sarah the best of success in her future endeavors. She will be missed by our staff and students. At this point, BTPS has advertised for the position and hopes to hire a replacement in the near future. Stay tuned for an update once the position has been filled.

We, at VES, have updated our photocopiers. We changed them out during the second week of January. This allows us to combine our fax machine, photocopiers (black and white as well as color

Please join us for the next School Council meeting on January 23 at 7:00 in the VES Learning Commons. It is a Thursday meeting, not a Monday meeting as per usual. All parents are encouraged to attend. Child care will be provided in the gym.

VES will be hosting Frisbee Rob on January 27. We look forward to having him speak and perform for our students and staff. As well, Science in Motion will be taking place during the last week of January and will involve students from Grades 1-6 this year. The science fair will take place at VES on February 7.

BUILDING CUSTODIAN The County of Vermilion River is seeking a highly motivated person to join our team as a full-time, permanent Building Custodian to perform cleaning, janitorial and custodial tasks within various County buildings.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS:

       

Positive, energetic “can-do” approach to your work Grade 12 or equivalent and have related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience Detail oriented and conscientious about quality workmanship Expert in methods, materials, tools and equipment used in janitorial work and maintenance work Knowledgeable in and able to perform routine and minor building repair and maintenance Self-motivated and proactive and can work with minimal supervision Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License Able to work flexible shifts

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

       

Sweep, vacuum, wax and polish floors, hallways, etc.

Wash sink and toilets Clean windows, doors, shelves, etc.

Clean and sweep steps and clear snow and ice around buildings Operate, clean and minor service of automatic heating and ventilation units Minor maintenance, repair and painting Ensure building security Complete logbooks and other written materials; and other related work as required
