The Vermilion Lions Club hosted their annual Santa Anonymous, delivering food and toy parcels to approximately 74 families on December 21. The program has been running for a p pr ox i m ate l y 4 0 ye ar s, a n d n ow services Vermilion, Minburn, Mannville, Clandonald, and Islay. Head elf, Dolores Coates-Lingley, has been volunteering for the past 25 years, and Vermilion Outreach School staff and students volunteered on December 19. The program relies on donations of toys, and monetary funds to help with the food hampers, and according to Coates-Lingley, fills a need in the community. “My parents support it every year so I knew what it was, but hadn’t been

involved before. It is fun finding things for other people and making them happy! I’m definitely coming back to do this next year,” said Melayna Kennedy. “Along with many other Santa Anonymous programs in the area we are having a challenge meeting our financial responsibilities. Minor Hockey adopted a few families this year, and Purses for Moms was a new asset this year. I really appreciate my volunteers; there is no way I could have done this without them, the Lions members, and the support of the communities,” said, Dolores Coates-Lingley.

Crime Reduction Underway

RCMP Cpl. Ronald Bumbray visited the Vermilion Detachment on December 18, to speak about local crime reduction initiatives that are underway. Media relations officer for the Eastern Alberta District, Cpl. Bumbry, is from St. Paul and works with a Strategic Communications Unit in Edmonton. He said, “Stay tuned; we want to share what we are doing here. We want the public engaged specifically in terms of rural crime. There are a lot of analytics involved and targeted enforcement, so tips from the community can help to pool information from a larger area.” According to www.rcmp.gc.ca, Project Lock Up was announced in February 2019. The project is led by intelligence and supported by a strong partner network, who together aim to reduce property crime and build trust between citizens and law enforcement. Project Lock Up creates a framework that enables the RCMP as well as its
enforcement and citizen-led stakeholders to place a spotlight on repeat victims of property crime. District Crime Reduction Units target repeat offenders and address repeat crime trends to reduce the impact of crime in communities across Alberta. They state that the Alberta RCMP’s Crime Reduction Strategy measures five key property crime indicators which count the number of reported incidents of Break and Enters, Theft of Motor Vehicles, Theft over and under $5,000, and Possession of Stolen Property in Alberta RCMP jurisdictions. They recognise that although these crime indicators do not represent every type of property crime (fraud, arson and mischief), that they represent the overall state and trend of property crime in Alberta. The Alberta RCMP continues to work with community partners such as Rural Crime Watch (RCW) and Citizens on Patrol (COP) to promote crime prevention awareness in communities throughout Alberta. Bylaw 14-2019 was brought back to Town Council in Vermilion on December 17, to consider further readings, regarding an amendment to Bylaw 11-2013 potentially allowing micro-cannabis production in the C4 Shopping Centre District. “I believe the business has done its due diligence but I still have a lot of reservations even though some of my concerns have been addressed,” said Councillor Richard Yaceyko. “A Metro Vancouver discussion paper

identified concerns including ground level ozone. I think the industry is in its infancy and I think there is an opportunity to find some improvements,” said Councillor Robert Pulyk. “It’s such a new enterprise; I don’t think that the public thinks micro-cannabis production is not something of value in our community – just not there,” said Councillor Greg Barr. “When I talk to other people, they don’t seem to care where it goes. With that said, I have to say, that this year as my husband and I drove around town to look at the Christmas lights I was a little disappointed. Maybe, it is just my perception but it seemed like there were a lot fewer houses decorated this year than last year. The lights are one of my most favourite parts of the holidays as it brightens up the town. I have lived here for 14 years but I still remember how back home in Newfoundland it was always so greatly decorated, almost ever y house had lights and displays in our hometown. Christmas. I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of all this bull about this and that being offensive when it has been around for decades and in some cases centuries. Day after day it is preached to us to accept and love the diversity we have in this country, but when I have to start changing my beliefs and how I celebrate them to appease someone else I get a little frustrated. With my rant now over, I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and I wish you all the joy of making new memories and lasting traditions that can be passed from generation to generation.
We celebrate Christmas all because a very special little baby who was born in a manger to bring peace and reconciliation to the world. This baby came out of love to deliver the most precious gift of forgiveness. For some people it is a gift that is easy to give, and receive and for others it is a rare and difficult gift to give or an impossible one to receive. There are no easy instructions for getting past hurts, betrayals, rejections and disappointments from others, yet that is what forgiveness is, and it is so important that our Christmas baby Jesus gave his life for it thirtythree years later. Forgiveness is one of the greatest resulting gifts of the Christmas story. When someone has wronged us, and even if that person does not ever apologize, or is unaware of the hurt they caused we can still forgive and heal and prosper. Forgiving is not saying that what they did was ok, because it still is not, and it may
never be, but rather forgiving is allowing room in our hearts and minds to acknowledge the imperfect in ourselves and others. We know that many people are not able to apologize or take responsibility for their own short comings or bad behaviour. Some people are too prideful and arrogant to ever admit they are wrong, even to themselves. Certain people are clicky, immature and lack care, kindness and concern for others and are self absorbed. There are also people that are just plain mean, thoughtless, jealous, rude, and vengeful or want their own way. Not everyone can act with the same integrity that we would hope for, and waiting for such people to offer an apology, or to correct their wrong doing is a waste of our time. It is good and kind people that can offer genuine restoration in relationships, but not everyone is good and kind, and not everyone wants restoration. If the people that offend you do not have positive character attributes, then don’t expect them to act like you think they should. It is better to accept where they are at, and not waste too much time being angry, sad or sulking about their disagreeable attitude. They

have clearly displayed who they. If we wrong people, we need to take responsibility, quickly apologize and if someone is offering to repair the breach, we need to be open to extend grace. When forgiveness is a decision you make, you are often able to feel better towards the person that has wronged you. Does forgiving mean that you have to give them a big smile and befriend them the next time you see them? That is up to you and the situation. On a continuum there are people that are mature enough to be able to work out their differences and respect each other. Other people find even the slightest differences unacceptable; they are not capable of working anything out and will forever continue on in a rude, grudgeful and snubbing fashion. But thirdly, it is impossible to work anything out with an arrogant person that does not care about anyone and believes that they are seldom wrong. Recognize what you are dealing with, forgive and move on and find better people. My dad advised me in such situations, to”let it be like water off a ducks back”. It is to our benefit to not allow ourselves to be

As long as we stay unforgiving, we are emotionally tied to that person, unable to heal and personally I don’t even like being around those types of people, so I sure don’t want to be tied to them. Forgiveness of self and others makes us truly free, and even our health, heart and our sprit benefit. It is self care. In giving the gift of forgiveness we get one of the best Christmas gifts ever for ourselves, and it is such a great way to start the New Year. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

The Sherwoods Of Bowtell

For several years, William and Alice Sherwood operated a small shop in a small town south of London, England. They had three daughters there and one son but eventually the call of Canada became too much and they decided to make the trip out, arriving in 1904. Travelling by train to Edmonton, and then by team and wagon to the Vermilion area, the trip to their new home would take three weeks in total. Upon arrival, a daughter Lilly would be born, becoming
the second baby born in the area to Europeans. She would be born not in a house, but a tent on the homestead. Alice was terrified of grass fires destroying their future home, so they chose a location where there was no bush, and built their log homes. Times were not easy for the family. William would often have to go to Edmonton for supplies, a trip that took three weeks. One time, he left and Alice did not have anything to feed her family. Resourceful, she took a wire out of her hat and snared a rabbit with it and made an excellent stew for the family to enjoy. When Christmas came, the family did not have much money, so after the kids
went to sleep, Alice began to make cookie men and put them in the stockings of the children. William would work for George Oliver when the family first arrived and he would walk seven miles each way, fence for 50 cents a day, for 12 hours a day. When the railway arrived a year later, William supplied the team of horses he had, and his labour, at a cost of three dollars a day. Eventually, he was a foreman of several work teams who were making the roads in the area. A lover of books, William would read every chance he could by the light of an open fire. He would eventually pass away on April 24, 1963.
Their son, Tom, would stay in the area and begin to farm next to his father. He would marry Isabell Fowler on December 1, 1930, just as The Great Depression was beginning, but the couple made it work and they worked hard on their land. A Bachelor’s Christmas

If there is one thread that has wound throughout the fabric of my sweater of Christmas experience, it would have to be the presence of a bachelor at Christmas. I suppose this could be a comment on anyone being single and their experience during the holidays but I wouldn’t want speak for any gender but my male one. Now carrying the bachelor handle around doesn’t always get the greatest of reception socially at times, especially if you tend to be of the ‘confirmed’ variety. A quick look at the Wikipedia definition would have me glad I didn’t live in Ancient Sparta. Having carried that moniker into my early thirties, I happened to be one of those dragged out of their pad somewhat and made to endure the gauntlet of typical “Ten things single people don’t want to hear” questions during December holidays. But this story isn’t even about that…it’s about a cast of characters that happened to be bachelor’s that made up an interesting Christmas day. Now I had gotten used to the idea of bachelors at Christmas

with my Dad sharing stories about his parents inviting their bachelor farming neighbors over for the Christmas meal so they could share in some togetherness and not be left sitting at home alone on Christmas Day. Isolation was a very real thing to suffer through back then and Dad mentioned it often in his stories. I suppose these days being “left alone” would be perhaps a more accepted thing to desire, achieve, and accomplish socially, but back then getting together on the holidays was something those spending most of their time in solitude would override willingly if not going to tremendous lengths to prevent. Not unimportant either…difficulty in any communication or travel in those days meant an invitation was well worth the effort to keep in touch and rarely treated lightly. Now I suppose I could mention a bunch of bachelor characters but the first of these would simply have to be my Uncle Herman. Uncle was a confirmed bachelor if there ever was one until his dying day, and seemed to travel about through like a tumbleweed of the tumbling variety. During my childhood Uncle spent several extended periods of time living in the basement at our house on the farm, and was a staple at Christmas and family
holiday gatherings. Other than the fact he usually brought the primary elements of non-conformism, cigarillo smoke, and cantankerous old goat to the occasion, there was actually something about that you missed when he wasn’t around. I suppose it would begin with that timely lack of drama caused by his muttering of Trivial Pursuit answers under his breath…especially when he was never playing. When my Dad went through his first divorce and moved from Vermilion north to his farm at Elk Point, that was I suppose the first Christmas I remember sort of identifying myself as a bachelor … with my brother Gordon, Dad, and I spending a “Bachelor’s Christmas” up the road across from the King George Hall with Mr. Zarowny. Now the reason I remember that early 1980’s Christmas perhaps more than others was the fact that my family unit was no longer the same and money to make ends meet for presents was especially tight. So that Christmas day Mr. Zarowny, who in those days would be called a ‘tinker’ and these days maybe a ‘maker’, got out a couple of empty “Captain’s Table” liquor bottles, glass tools, electric cord, and light bulb fixtures. Over a few short hours that Christmas Day we four bachelors visited
together, he made my brother and I each an electric table lamp. Who does that? It was like being brought inside Santa’s workshop. There was no a big holiday meal and it was a rather sparse bachelor cabin setting…but it was a very special memory and as far as sentimental goes that day and that little lamp remain a cherished one. So invitations to bachelors for Christmas Day meals seemed to be a family ‘thing’ to do, and while Dad remained at Elk Point his next door neighbor farmer Dmytro Hnybida, a quiet sweet and gentle old guy, was always there on Christmas Day with stories of early pioneer days and about his home country. I suppose that would constitute the thread I mentioned earlier, about being happy to bring those supposed ‘outsiders’ into the family fold to share in that togetherness of the day and make it more interesting. They don’t have to be relatives…they can be a good neighbor or friend. Invite them and allow them to be themselves, as interesting as that may end up being, and don’t give them the 10 question gears. Perhaps they will even be the life of the party…if not perhaps in Trivial Pursuit. Have a great Christmas holiday everyone.

Cheers roared through the gymnasium at Vermilion Elementary School on December 19, during their annual Teddy Bear Toss accompanying the All Star Floor Hockey Game. The floor hockey game was exciting as some of the students had the opportunity to take on their teachers; both teams expending a lot of energy. The Vermilion Ridge Riders donated $330 and a pick-up truck box full of food items to the Vermilion Food bank on December 20. The donations came from their recent Snowmobile Expo. “Thank you and Merry Christmas Mr. Young. It’s wonderful, and very generous when other organizations step in and see the need,” said Suzette de JongHarrower. “We had about 350 people come to the Snowmobile Expo, and we would like to thank everybody for their donations,” said Greg Young.

T h e V ES s t a f f and students would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a wonderful holiday break with all of your favourite things. VES started their last week of school on Monday with a school wide game of bingo. This activity was put on by the Spirit Club. Each student had one card that they played a variety of games with until finally they had the blackout game.

Congratulations to Emer y Stalker, who won the blackout. After bingo, the students played a couple games of elf/ reindeer before heading back to class. On December 17, we held our second annual school wide Rock, Paper, Scissors competition. Congratulations to Douglas Romeo, who shot his way to the top and received the coveted trophy. On December 19, Canley Cup took place at noon, as well as our annual teddy bear toss. We thank all those who donated the many stuffies, as those go to children in our community.
The Grade 2 classes have been studying Christmas around the World. They have visited many countr i e s t hrou g h stor i e s, v i d e o c li p s, sampling cultural Christmas foods and participating in fun crafts along the way. Opening Christmas Crackers and decorating gingerbread cookies were highlights. O n D e c e m b e r 2 0, a l l s t a f f a n d students got to go to the gym and enjoy a catered Christmas meal of turkey, stuffing, and the works. Thanks to Mrs. J’s catering for doing this for our school
and to Mrs. Moses for organizing this event. It was a terrific opportunity to share time together as a whole school. Please join us for the next school council meeting on Januar y 21, at 7p.m. in the VES Learning Commons. All parents are encouraged to attend. Child care will be provided in the gym. A major investment in the agricultural industry in the County of Vermilion River will begin in 2020 with the construction of a high-efficiency grain elevator project from G3. Kitscoty RCMP Investigate Hit And Run At RCMP Detachment
Submitted Kitscoty, Alta. - On Dec. 17 at approximately 11:30 p.m., a vehicle collided with the Kitscoty RCMP Detachment sign and one of the parked police vehicles, causing extensive damage. The suspect
then drove off without reporting the collision. The RCMP is seeking public assistance in identifying the person responsible. The suspect vehicle is believed to be a mid to late 2000’s Dodge pickup truck that is white or silver and will have damage
to the passenger side headlight area. A surveillance still of the suspect vehicle as well as photograph of the resulting damage to RCMP property are attached. Anyone with information is asked to contact Kitscoty RCMP at 780-846-

The Board recognizes Mr. Allen’s 36 years of dedication and service to the students, staff, and families of BTPS. Mr. Allen has demonstrated his commitment to Buffalo Trail Public Schools throughout his entire career beginning as a teacher, then as a principal and in 2005 he joined Central Office in a senior administrative role and has spent the past 11 years as Superintendent of Schools for BTPS. “Mr. Bob Allen has been an extraor-
dinary leader for Buffalo Trail Public Schools. Bob is very well respected within the division and throughout the province. He is known for being innovative and intuitive and for driving our division for ward with many positive initiatives. His dedication to our division has been an inspiration. On behalf of the Board, we have always appreciated our incredible working relationship with Bob.
