The Wainwright Dance Academy hosted two performances of their 10th Annual Nutcracker Production at the Alumni Theatre in Vermilion on December 14.
Dancers worked together to make the traditional Christmas story come to life. Sparkling smiles filled the stage, and the audience was dazzled by ornate costumes and the dancers’ ability to incorporate several props as they made the journey to the enchanted kingdom.

“Their passion for telling the story came through in their performance,” said artistic director and choreographer, Sandy Sundborg. Approximately 50 dancers filled the stage. Sundborg noted that some of the senior girls were fortunate enough to
participate as guest artists in the Wanna Dance? Nutcracker Production in Hamilton, Ontario this season. Overall, the audience couldn’t help but be drawn into the story. Their love of dance, and Christmas cheer was renewed by watching the incredible performances.

for $250, Jack Seewalt for $100, Dean Golinowski for $100, Larry Bingham for $100, and Paul Corbiere for $52.11. The grand total was $1,602.11. Overall, everyone was really pleased to have been a part of the special day and assist the local food bank.
Vermilion’s Jeff Harms was the lucky 2019 winner and completed the Knights of Columbus Shopping Spree at McDonald’s Family foods on December 12. Along with his wife Diane and their children, they decided to donate the full $1,000 amount to the Vermilion Food Bank. Given three minutes on the clock, he was able to race around the aisles collecting items likely to be very much appreciated at the Food Bank. “Well that was exciting!” said Jeff after managing to fill carts with food and beverage items as well as baby items. “This will help families. It’s really important to us because both having experienced job loss this year, we know what it is like to not have that security. We both have been re-employed and are not in dire need, but this is a pretty cool way for us to support the community. Out of all the places we have lived, this is the place we feel most at home,” said Diane Harms. Parkinson Christmas Party

The Vermilion Support Group of the Parkinson Association of Alberta’s Lloydminster Region held a Christmas Party at Nick’s family Restaurant in Vermilion on December 10. Members from Vermilion, Wainwright and area met with family members and enjoyed the festive interaction. The new support group began in November, and many are excited about the convenience of the location (regularly held at the Continuing Care Centre’s Stewart Hunter Room). Glen Johnston has been living with Parkinson disease (PD) since 2009 and is originally from Kitscoty, but recently moved to Vermilion. Now retired from farming and ranching as well as driving school bus for 30 years, he enjoys the meetings and noted that there are ups and downs to living with PD. “Aside from visiting, we are able to discuss what medications work well, and learn about new technologies. It offers a group of friends who understand what you may be going through. For example, I regularly have no ambition to go do things, but scheduled meetings help to get me out of the house. On the plus side, my wife and I still square dance!” said Johnston. Client Services Coordinator, Sherry Bower-Gagne, said that outreach and support are key in helping those who have noticed symptoms deal with them earlier. “Everyone has been thrilled to start meetings in Vermilion. This is a life changer for so many who have lost the feeling of living life the way they used to. People who are diagnosed with these types of disorders are faced with incredible changes that really impact their lives and the lives of those who love them. This group is especially special as there are folks that attended that have lived a long time dealing with the disease on their own. That is really sad for me; there is so

much more. The joy that comes from these folks when they become aware that there are people going through what they are going through; and they are the professionals - they teach each other tips and life hacks! There are things that I can provide working with the Parkinson Association of Alberta, we have so many ways that we can provide support, education and awareness for those around them. Life doesn’t have to be like what they are living now, people can ask for support. I can help them in so many ways; it’s not just support groups. I can work one on one with them and their families to provide free, confidential supportive counselling. I can offer education for their health care team. There is light, people just have to open themselves up and trust that there are other ways of dealing with this disease,” said Bower-Gagne. Glen Wimmer is originally from Mannville and along with his wife, Charlene, farmed and worked in construction. Having moved back to Vermilion in 2015, they began attending in Vermilion in November and have been uplifted by sharing their story and encouraging others. “Many people with PD have voice impairment. As the medications wear off, the symptoms return. Being a prime candidate for DBS (deep brain stimulation), Glen underwent his first surgery in 2006. After two unsuccessful attempts to have the electrodes placed in the right spot, a third attempt in 2008 was successful. It has worked really well for him. Previously, he had been on medication every two hours day and night, and now has been able to go off medication for 11 years. He is also more mobile, no longer using a wheel chair, and we are able to enjoy semi-retirement,” said Charlene Wimmer. The Realtors® Association of Lloydminster & District donated $300 to the Vermilion Lions Santa Anonymous on December 11. “On behalf of Santa Anonymous, ‘Thank you!’” said Geroge Matechuk.
“As realtors, we are always trying to help out,” replied Don Stewart. Justin Thompson noted that the Vermilion Lions Club had received 59 applicants for Santa Anonymous last year and 70 applicants this year. I always look forward to the enjoying the traditional foods of Christmas. The menu is pret t y standard year af ter year all across the prairies: turkey, cranberry sauce, potatoes, gravy, stuffing, fresh carrots from the garden (or other veggies), a coleslaw or garden salad, pickles and maybe some wine. The desert of choice varies widely, based on family traditions but a Christmas Carrot Pudding is a classic. Turkey The tur key c an be roaste d with the breast up or down. perfect look. To have a nicely browned turkey, then roast with the breast up and uncover during the last hour of cooking to brown the turkey. Cook an unthawed and unstuffed turkey for 20 minutes per pound at 325 degrees, or until juices run clear and an internal temperature of 170 degree F. Reserve the juices (drippings) for the gravy. I always like to add a little poultry seasoning, with the salt and pepper to the gravy for an amazing flavor. Don’t forget that the turkey bones will make a great broth for homemade turkey soup. Turkey Stuffing Cut up one loaf of bread, (whole grain) into cubes, add 2 medium chopped onions, toss with 1/3 cup light olive oil, 1/2 cup melted butter, salt, pepper and poultry seasoning to taste. Yes, you have to taste it to get it right, before you pop the stuffing into the oven. Cook in 2 loaf pans, covered loosely with tin foil in the oven during the last 30-40 minutes of roasting the turkey. It is currently recommended to not cook the stuffing in the turkey. Roasting the turkey without the stuffing inside is considered a safer cooking method to help ensure the optimal internal cooking temperature of the turkey. Cranberry Sauce In a saucepan combine 2 1/2 cups frozen or fresh cranberries, 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup maple syrup or sugar. Cook on low heat, occasionally stirring, breaking up some of the berries when cooked with the back of the spoon. Remove from heat when thicken and slightly reduced. Serve warm or cold. This can also be used as a jam on toast. It’s very healthy and tasty. You can also add in one or two chopped oranges at the beginning for a fresh citrus cranberry flavor. Mashed Potatoes and Gravy Mashed potatoes are pretty straight forward, peel and boil the potatoes until
cooked, drain and mash with butter and milk or cream. For the gravy you will need the drippings from the turkey, I use a strainer to remove any bits that have fallen into the drippings. Add the dripping to a heavy bottomed pot. While that is cooling down a bit mix up your thickener which is a slurry of flour and water. In a large oversized cup or small bowl, add one tablespoon of cornstarch for every cup of drippings that you think you have, add enough water to make a pourable slurry. Stir until it is smooth, without lumps. It will look like cream. Pour it into the drippings stirring, and then put the mixture back onto heat, medium, stirring until it thickens. If you decide to use flour instead, use 2 tablespoons of flour for every cup of drippings. Season with salt, pepper and some poultry seasoning. Christmas Carrot Pudding 2 cups flour 1 cup grated carrots 1 cup grated potatoes 1 cup mixed fruit or glace cherries 1/2 cup suet 1 cup currents 1 cup raisins 1/2 cup syrup or molasses 4 eggs 1 cup brown sugar 1 tsp baking soda 2 teaspoons cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon salt Mix all ingredients together and fill 1 quart wide mouth mason jars 2/3 full. Close the jars with a 2 piece mason jar seal. Process the jars in boiling water for 1 and half hours. The water level should cover the pudding. Do not be tempted to over fill the jars because the seal will pop while you are cooking and then you will have the mess of Christmas pudding in the boiling water. Cool and store the jars in the refrigerator until ready to serve. This pudding can be made ahead and stored in the fridge up to one month as

long as the jar retains the seal. To serve: warm the pudding by steaming in a pot of hot water on low heat. In my family this pudding is ser ved with a warm brandy sauce. This is the same brandy that my mom and my granny always kept in the cupboard for medicinal purposes only such as hot toddies, and of course the Christmas brandy sauce. A dollop of ice cream is a nice complement to the hot sauce, and a modern twist to top this Christmas desert. Right now a toffee sauce is trending as a new flavor for an old favorite. This pudding can be made days or even a few weesk ahead and stored in the refrigerator. Brandy Sauce 1 cup brown sugar 2 Tablespoons cornstarch 1/3 cup brandy 2 cups boiling water 4 Tablespoons water In a heavy saucepan mix the cornstarch and sugar, stir in the boiling water and cook on low to medium heat, constantly stirring until thicken. Stir in the brandy and the butter. Serve warm over the pudding. You can also substitute light or spiced rum to create a rum and butter sauce. When you are relaxing at home over the holidays left over carrot pudding is a great Boxing Day treat to enjoy with coffee or tea. Here’s wishing you great holiday food and many happy cooking memories. Toffee Sauce 7/8 cup butter 1 1/2 cups golden brown sugar 1 cup heavy cream ( 18 – 35 %) 1/2 teaspoon vanilla In a heavy bottomed sauce pan melt butter on medium low, stir in the brown sugar and cook until dissolved stirring as needed. Add the cream and vanilla and stir as need while cooking for 5 minutes as it thickens. Let the sauce cool from hot to warm before serving.

Erving Goffman Of Mannville
Columnist
He is one of the most notable sociologists of the 20th century and is often considered to be the mostinfluential sociologist of the century as well. He is Erving Goffman and he was born right in Mannville on June 11, 1922. The son of Max and Anne Goffman, who had come to Canada from the Ukraine at the turn of the century, his older sister was Frances Bay, who would go on to become a noted actress with a career that spanned 35 years. The family would eventually move to Dauphin, Manitoba where Max operated a successful tailor business. In 1937, Goffman would attend St. John’s Technical High School in Winnipeg after the family had moved to the city. In 1939, he attended the University of Manitoba and majored in chemistry. He took a break from his studies to move to Ottawa and work for the National Film Board of Canada. He would meet sociologist Dennis Wrong, who helped him develop an interest in sociology. He would enrol at the University of Toronto as a restful, earning a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and anthropology. He would earn his masters degree at the University of Chicago in 1949, and his PhD in 1953 in sociology. Goffman would marry Angelica Choate in 1952 and a son named Thomas was born in 1953. Sadly, Angelica suffered from mental illness and would take her own life in 1964. Goffman was noted for his interest and success in gambling and the stock market and he would at one point work as a pit boss at a Las Vegas casino as an ethnographic study. 3” wide version

In 1981, he would marry sociolinguist Gillian Sankoff, and a daughter would be born the next year. Sadly, Goffman would pass away from stomach cancer that year. His daughter Alice would go on to a successful sociologist career of her own. Goffman’s work would be highly influential both during his life and after. In 2007, he was listed by The Times Higher Education Guide as the sixth mostcited author in the humanities and social sciences. Today, he is considered to be a revered figure in the science, and is described as an outlaw theorist who came to exemplify the best of the sociological imagination and is considered the first post-modern sociological theorist. Christmas Greetings From Clandonald
Clandonald Agricultural Society Submitted
The spirit of Christmas is in full swing with the twinkle of Christmas lights. The Clandonald Agricultural Society directors spent one evening putting up the Christmas lights around the fair grounds. We are again sponsoring the Christmas decorating contest and encourage everyone to light up and get in the spirit of Christmas. Judging takes place from December 15 to 18. First place winner receives $25, second place $15, third place $10 and seniors with decorations chocolates/candies. Winners will be announced at the Clandonald School Christmas Concert. Everyone looks forward to the Clandonald School Christmas Concert, which takes place on December 19 at 7 p.m. The evening is full of entertainment from the students. You cannot help but leave with a smile. The ice is being installed in the Arena, affectionately known as the “Chrome Dome.” Please check the Clandonald Agricultural Society Facebook page for details when the ice is ready for skating/sticks and the hours of operation. Mark Fialkowski is our Arena caretaker for this skating season. The Christmas Mass at the St. Columba Church is on Christmas Eve at 6 p.m. Let us not forget why we celebrate Christmas. Mass on New Year’s Eve will be held at 5
p.m. at St. Columba Church. In the new year, the Clandonald Agricultural Society will be hosting “Hay” Clandonald on Friday, January 17. For $15, you enjoy an evening with roast beef supper, speaker, silent and live auctions, door prizes and entertainment. Supper will be served from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The program will start at 6:30 p.m. with Neil Harris who will speak on Mental Health in the Agricultural Industry. Tom Liske, a comedian, will end the evening. Tickets can be purchased at Clandonald Country Store, Clandonald
Seed Cleaning Plant and Rural Roots in Vermilion. A big thank you to our sponsors who support this event! Keep the Family Day weekend open for Hockey Night in Clandonald. This event was a huge success last year and raised $6000 for a great cause, Hayin’ in the 30s. We thank all who have contributed and helped in any way with events throughout the year. St. Jerome’s Christmas Concert

The Lakeland College Alumni Theatre was packed full of excitement as family and friends attended the St. Jerome’s School’s Christmas Concert on December 12. Over 100 children, Kindergarten – Grade 5, kept the crowd engaged with their lively performances. It was clear that a lot of practice had gone into the concert. Well delivered messages spread Christmas cheer throughout the theatre. The children had a lot of fun dressing up in costumes, singing and dancing throughout the night. The first ever live music was held on December 15, at the Copper Cork Distillery with the Vermilion Folk Club hosting El Niven & the Alibi. “It’s really cozy; almost like you’re in our jam room. Thank you so much for having us,” said Elliott Niven. He went on to say that in some way or another, the duo has been playing together since 2006 when they were children living with their parents. They played mostly originals but included a few outlaw country songs, a cover of a Moody Blues song, and a few 60’s grunge rock covers with a country flare. According to Rod MacMillan, the duo has played this area four times in the past 10 months which is unheard of, and
they were sold out within the first 14 hours. An additional set was performed at the Legion that evening in celebration of County of Vermilion River Fire Chief, Orest Popil’s Birthday. “The sound in here was great; it’s a great room for live music. I hope it’s the first of many,” said Rod MacMillan. “They are awesome! As far as live music goes, they are writing their own stuff, and when they do a cover, they do a classic,” said Peter Walsh. With the crowd getting sucked into the angst of the performance and singing along, El Niven & the Alibi received a standing ovation. After a lively performance Elliott Niven said, “That was lit!” Drummer, Jeff Burwash added, “Make sure you keep this Folk Club going; for musicians like us it’s really important.”

The 7th Annual Blue Christmas in Vermilion was held at the Lutheran Church on December 10. Representatives from local funeral homes ushered guests and assisted them in lighting candles during the service. Guests enjoyed music, comforting words, and fellowship during the service. Community churches sponsored the event, and the evening was an opportunity to remind people that their community hasn’t forgotten about their loved ones, no matter how long they’ve been gone. Overall people enjoyed the reminders of comfort and hope leading into the Christmas season.

The Vermilion River Naturalists Society held their Annual Christmas Bird Count on December 14. First and second year Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation and Conservation & Restoration Ecology students joined Chris Olsen’s team. Alumni Caleb Corcoran Alyssa Metro, and Blaine Olfert also participated. The group had many stops in the area and were keen to take part, and thankful for landowner cooperation. “I just really love birds! I really want to become an ornithologist; so it is a passion but I want it to become part of my career,” said Kelsi Sullivan. “Doing population studies is a citizen science project; it gets the average person out and involved with science. There are no funds allotted for projects like this; and you don’t have to be a biologist, anyone can participate and contribute to the database. An index of population trends and distribution has been going since 1900,” said Caleb Corcoran. According to Chris Olsen, there are many reasons to participate as there are thousands of counts between December 14, and January 5, right across Canada. Murray Westman Memorial Open Cash Spiel
Submitted The second annual Murray Westman Memorial Open Cash Spiel was held at the Vermilion Curling Club December 13 – 15. Twelve teams participated in the event. Teams as far away as Edmonton, Lloydminster, Irma, Fox Valley and surrounding area participated. The top six teams of the spiel qualified for the $4,000 payout. In the end Ryan Deis from Lloydminster defeated Branden Cookson in the final. The teams enjoyed a wonderful banquet Saturday night. T h e S t . J e r o m e’s Elementar y students did it again! They blew the roof off of a packed house with their heartwarming and humorous performance of the Christmas musical “Straight Outta Bethlehem”. The Grade 5 actors gave incredible performances, beautiful singing rang through the theatre, and the dance moves were groovy! Thank you to all the students for your hard work and dedication to the concert, you made us all so proud. Thank you to the teachers and educational assistants for your commitment to presenting the most amazing concert with the message of Christ’s birth at the forefront. We are extremely grateful to Liam Lawrence for his technical support in taking this concert to the next level. Thank you to the college for sharing your theatre, the town crew for setting up the bleachers, and Mrs. MacMillan for running the music. Thank you to the parents and families for packing the theatre and giving us a delightful audience to share our talents with. To everyone, your support
St. Jerome’s School News
is overwhelming. We are truly blessed to be a part of the St. Jerome’s family! In the days leading up to the big show, I interviewed many students and teachers to hear their perspective on being a part of such an amazing performance. Brooklyn Nichols, in Grade 5, said that the scariest part of the performance for her, is having to set the tone for the evening by saying the very first line! Ryker Bangun reflected on the overall message that he is taking away from the play. He said that he now understands that “We are all part of God’s family, and even if you are poor of money you aren’t poor of love and heart.” Jagger Gamarcy said that his favourite memories of the play will be “All of the laughter when we messed up and made mistakes while practicing.” Althea Mamites, who played Gerdie, noted that one thing she shared in common with her character was a love of animals!! Laura James, who played Star feels most nervous about the singing solos she has on the big night! Even if she has some nerves she says “I always laugh when Blake says ‘Don’t you always think the day is going to be incredible!’” Thadeus Molsberry plays Blake, who is the sarcastic
star of the show. He shares Laura’s nerves with regards to singing solo, and says his favourite line is his enthusiastic announcement to Joseph and Mary “Welcome to the Inn! We have no rooms!” It is a moment that is sure to make everyone laugh and smile. Ashton Selte’s goal is to get through the night without having stage fright, good luck Ashton! He says his favourite scene in the show is when they are in the barn with all of the animals trying to teach them to sing. Denim Stark loves his star dance role in the song “Disco Gloria”, and reminds everyone not to be embarrassed and just have fun with it! Miss Frankiw expressed that she can’t wait to see it all come together on the night of the performance and that she is the most nervous about “All of it, the whole thing!” She got emotional when describing how proud she was of all of her students and all of the hard work they have put into it. The younger students had some thoughts to share about preparing for the concert as well! Tenley Selte likes “dancing to our song!” While Aiden Martin says his favourite part of the show is “How the lights change and go on and off, and seeing my parents out in the crowd.” Zoe Remple finds it tricky

Our Grade 6 boys that are members of the J.R. Robson basketball team had a tournament at J.R. Robson on December 7. The Marauders played three games and won all of them. In the last game, they were behind but pulled it off in the end to win a plaque and basketball bags. Congratulations, boys. 5B has been working on a Readers Theatre version of ‘The Grinch Who Stole Christmas’ by Dr. Seuss. They will be recording it to share with the other classrooms. In addition to this fun activity, they’ve been having a trivia question every morning and afternoon, which they answer in four Christmas themed teams. They will see which team is the Christmas Trivia Champion for 5B on
the morning of December 20. On December 19, the VES Grade 5-6 All-Stars floor hockey team will take on the staff team during the noon recess. This long-standing tradition will be the Seventh Annual Teddy Bear Toss. Students will bring stuffed animals to donate to children in need, and toss them into the middle of the gym when the first student goal is scored. This shows a great example of VES generosity amidst all the fun of the game. Please feel free to send a stuffed toy with your child to the game on Thursday. All stuffies will be donated to the Santa’s Anonymous. Anyone can attend the game. The teddy bear is a donation, not an admission fee. See you there. Nutrition Grant, we will be able to sit with our classes and enjoy the traditional Christmas meal. We will listen to Christmas carols, eat a delicious Christmas dinner, and enjoy the time connecting with our school family. The Club will start on January 6 with practices on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:35 to 4:45 p.m. Students may attend one or both practice days - whatever works for families.
