The 2019 Santa Skate held much excitement for families at the Vermilion Stadium on December 7.

Skaters of all ages gathered for their opportunity to skate with Santa and the Junior B Tigers. A tradition in the community, many of the Junior B players attended the Santa Skate when they were children.

“Learning to skate is a good skill. Playing hockey you get to meet so many people throughout your life, and it is great exercise,” said assistant captain Jayden Nachtegaele.

“Hockey teaches team skills and work ethic and encourages people skills and life skills,” said captain Ashton Oakes.

Originally from Kitscoty, Glenn Venance said, “We’ve been so fortunate and the curling world has been so good to us. It’s important for us to give back, and we want the children to have some of the same experiences we’ve had. I used to play here, and now it’s come full circle. Self Centred Yoga & Wellness – 1st Anniversary

Co -founders Chelsea Snelgrove and Cour tney Besset te celebrated their 1st Anniversary of Self Centered Yoga & Wellness studio on December 7.

Throughout the day, they offered free 20 minute body-talk sessions and two free yoga classes; a beginners Vinyasa, and a warm Yin. Yoga instructor, Courtney Bessette said, “Vinyasa is a workout as well it helps to manage pain and stress in the body. Doing it, you will strengthen every part of your body. With Yin you are getting deep into the connective tissues of the muscles, bones and joints which we need. My favourite part is that you learn to breathe throughout the practice. It assists with keeping or creating more mobility and it’s great

for all ages.”

Christmas is quickly approaching and the holidays and the holiday parties are upon us. I made this for a little Jingle Mingle party I had at the shop, and it was a hit. This recipe nicely made one large ball, and ingredient list is very basic. There is no need to buy a pre-made cheese ball, when you can easily make your own with wholesome ingredients and skip all the food additives. The key tips are to have the cream cheese at room temperature, and to blot the excess mois-

ture out of the pickle slices. If you are using tabasco instead of a hot pepper sauce, reduce the amount to 6 drops.

Dill Pickle and Ham Cheese Ball 1 package of cream cheese (8 ounce) at room temperature 3/4 cup grated sharp or aged ched dar cheese 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce like Franks Red Hot 2 tablespoons finely chopped yellow onion 1 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon dill weed

1/4 cup chopped dill pickle 1/2 cup finely chopped ham 1 cup chopped walnuts Chop the dill pickle into slices, and then blot the vinegar moisture out, and then finely slice the dill pickle. if you are using fresh, or you can use canned crushed pineapple. Finely chop the ham and the onion.

Combine the softened cream cheese, the graded cheddar cheese, the chopped ham, onion and pineapple, the Worcestershire sauce, the pepper sauce, the dill, onion powder and the garlic powder. Mix until all the ingredients are well distributed. I often put it in the fridge to harden up a bit before forming the ball. On a piece of saran wrap,

spread the nuts and then spoon a ball shape onto the plastic wrap. Bringing the plastic up form the mass into a ball with your hands, while it is also being covered with nuts. Alternately you could also spread the walnuts on a cutting board, and roll the ball in the nuts. This can be wrapped in plastic wrap and stored in the refrigerator. It is best stored for several hours for the flavours to blend and the ball form to stiffen. It can be used right away or even popped into the oven, in an oven safe dish, to be served as a hot dip. Serve with your favourite crackers or make your own using my Cream Cracker recipe from the end of December 2015 edition of the Vermilion Voice.

The Vermilion Junior B Tigers hosted the Vegreville Rangers on December 6, and won 8 – 3. Scoring for Vermilion were Cale Isley, Jesse Culford, Ethan Nelson, Cody O’Hare, Toby Noble, Devin Bielecki, Rylan Long, and Denver Budzilka. Public Hearing - Micro Cannabis Production

Approximately 75 people attended the Town of Vermilion’s Public Hearing on December 3, where they discussed the possibilit y of passing Bylaw #14-2019. Bylaw #14-2019 proposes an amendment to the land use Bylaw #11-2013 regarding micro-cannabis production at the C4 Shopping Centre District.

Mayor Caroline McAuley welcomed everyone and noted that if defeated, t h ey wo u l d h ave to wa i t o n e year before it could come back to council. She also noted that they had not received a development application at that time.

Planner and Development officer, Allan Wilson, noted that it does not include cannabis sales. Lakeland Mall owner, Harp Kehla said, “ We were approached by two different companies, and our zoning doesn’t allow for it. We have not signed any leases, and our first step was to approach the town. The way the process is laid out involves zoning, then the lease, then the application process which includes providing a detailed drawing, meeting Health Canada requirements, and a background check from the RCMP. Standard operating practices on all producers from Health Canada across the countr y include eliminating the transference of odour, avoiding affecting the youth, avoiding contamination if there are visitors to the facility, and no exterior signage.

A big thing for us is obviously our current tenants. The eastern portion o f L a ke l a n d M a l l i s ve n te d s e p a rately from the rest of the mall, and if approved would be closed off entirely.

A micro-cannabis production facility is a very controlled space, built kind of like a lab. The cost to get into something like this is very high, so to build on an industrial lot, companies would likely go elsewhere. A lease would save them and allow them to exist in a rural area. Facilities like this typically provide about 25 jobs to the communit y including skilled and unskilled

labour.”

Community members had several questions about the proposed amendment and topics surrounding it.

Gary Walsh asked, “Is there going to be any changes in the liquid and solid waste?”

Vermilion & Distric t Chamber of C o m m e r c e, D av i d D eVo s s a i d , “ I come here today representing 13 businesses that feel they may see a decline in business and the odour that may come as a result is a huge concern.

If they lose business, their community may lose businesses because of this.

F’Laura n’ Company Greenhouse Owner, Laura Water field said, “ My concern comes from the fact that as a professional grower, I don’t use any pesticides. The cannabis industry has not had time to catch up to the industry and there are zero pesticides licensed for use in cannabis. There are huge discrepancies on how that can be a threat, and I’ve heard that up to a 20 kilometre radius can be a risk for pests. I have visited closed units and no system is perfect. Cannabis Aphids are my biggest concern; they breed like wildfire.”

Buffalo Trail Public School Board Trustee, Bruce Marriott, read a letter on behalf of the Board of Trustees from Chair Lanie Parr saying, “Our major concern is that the Lakeland Mall building is far too close to Vermilion Elementar y School where there are close to 300 children from Kindergarten to Grade 6 learning and playing on playgrounds only steps away from this building. We are uncertain of the potential exposure to the product, the environmental impact of odors in the production process and of the safety and security measures in place to protect our most vulnerable.

We do value our relationship with The Town of Vermilion and respectfully request that any amendment to the land use bylaw to allow cannabis production or any amendment that might negatively impact the children in the community is not passed.”

cipal said, “ Why would we put it in the mall? I don’t want to stand in the way of economics, but there are a lot of places we could put it with all the vacancies we have.”

Pink Peony owner, Lexi Stangeland said that she was born and raised in Vermilion and along with her hopes to continue to have a successful business; she hopes that council will think about the small businesses.

Pat Calyniuk noted that the Municipal Guide to Cannabis Legalization states that the location, scale and density of cannabis cultivation and retail facilities will have real impacts for local communities. She said, “The science on emissions is not clear. The normalization of cannabis has real concerns, along with the proximity to schools, residential, daycares, and a dance club.

Brandon Tupper said, “On the Town of Vermilion website the mission for our community is being a ‘ thriving, family friendly communit y’. This is really wrong going next to a school.

The Count y of Vermilion River and several other municipalities are very specific and have a 1,000m separation distance from a school.”

Leslie Bensch said, “ With manufacturing and assembling companies as prospects there would be added

traffic. With children everywhere, my concern would be access with semis and pollution.

Jim Sanson said, “I had the opportunity to visit a micro-growing operation, and they suggest it be done in an industrial area.”

“Have there been other applications to council regarding micro cannabis production?” asked Mary Bucharski implying other locations.

Mayor McAuley replied saying, “We have no development permits.”

Shelly Corbiere said, “ Many are of the opinion that it takes a solid community to raise children. Having a cannabis production facility so close is counterproductive.”

Ruby Samuelson, retired senior said, “It makes me wonder the caliber of our council because it will affect our insurance and taxes; just think of the water they are going to use.”

Following the hearing, Mayor McAuley said, “I’m overwhelmed by today’s attendance of the Public Hearing and proud of the residents who had enough passion to come out; this is amazing!

We are going to consider everything we’ve heard and make a decision in the best interest of the community.”

The topic will be brought back at the regular council meeting for the Town of Vermilion on December 17.

The Vermilion Folk Club will be hosting El Niven & The Alibi at the Copper Cork Distillery on December 15, at 3 p.m.

El Niven & The Alibi have gathered attention while touring the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States and will be performing for their second time in Vermilion. They previously received a standing ovation and several compliments after playing at the Vermilion Legion.

According to his bio, Niven got into music after a troubled youth, and now enjoys giving others the opportunity to connect with music in the same way.

Submitted Haley has enjoyed synchro for the past nine years. She has grown as an athlete. Figure results have improved over the years and this past year she has placed first at Provincials. Haley is not only a busy synchro swimmer. This past year she graduated from grade 12 with honours, played piano and saxophone at the local college, speed swimming in summer club, coaching and doing other various sports. Even though she was a busy person she always kept her focus towards the sport she loves - “synchro.” Even if there was a stumbling block she got back up with a smile and continued on. She always remained positive and focused if her group hit a rough patch. With the love of synchro Haley would go for extra practices to improve her figures and to help with her first ever solo. Being her first year

of doing solo, even though it was nerve racking for her to be the only one in the pool she did it with a smile, preciseness and emotion. Her results at all the competitions proved this as she placed first at all competitions and also taking home the solo championship. To keep up with fitness for her sport she took an extra fitness class at school. Her fitness class was geared towards her sport of synchro. She is always on deck at competitions cheering on not just her own club but everyone else as well. She is a good role model for the younger swimmers. She is now making a cross over to being a coach as well.

She coached a duet which had excellent results. Her love of synchro shows all year long, always thinking about “how this music would be good for a duet or solo team.” Haley loves the sport of synchro now called “Artistic Swimming” so much that any College of University she is looking at to attend has to have a synchro programs. Her plan is to continue to be involved as a swimmer (as long as she can) and as a coach. She will be swimming one more

year with Border City Stingrays as she is taking her first year University transfer at our local college.

Senior’s Centre Donation

MLA Garth Rowswell presented a $26,641 donation to the Vermilion Senior’s Centre on behalf of the Government of Alberta December 6.

The donation was part of the Community Facility Enhancement Program and matched the amount raised previously by the Senior’s Centre through community donations. Funds will be going towards

landscaping to enhance Heritage Park.

“Senior’s Centres are centres of activity in most communities and are often volunteer run. It’s a great facility! All of the activities that happen here are for seniors and the public at large,” said Vermilion-Lloydminster-Wainwright MLA, Garth Rowswell.

“We are thankful to all of the local support from service clubs and individuals, as well as this government support,” said Senior’s Centre representatives.

Cantata

The Vermilion Communit y Choir hosted performances of their annual Christmas Cantata at the First United Church on December 1 and 8.

Choir member, Bonnie Bauer said, “This is my first year and it has been a really good experience. Everyone has worked really hard and Bernie did a really good job keeping us all together.

The Cantata helps the Christmas spirit to come alive for a lot of people.”

The Cantata was called, ‘The Heart of Christmas’ with words and music

by Pepper Choplin. Director Bernie Huedepohl welcomed everyone and said, “A Cantata is basically a story told in song. This one we had a lot of fun with five years ago, and again this year. It gives us a chance to get together and sing.”

The audience enjoyed a selection of songs performed by the choir as well as joining in on a few Christmas carols.

Following the show, people stayed to visit over apple cider and goodies.

It is a good thing to observe Christmas day. The mere marking of times and seasons, when men agree to stop work and make merry together, is a wise and wholesome custom. It helps one to feel the supremacy of the common life over the individual life. It reminds a man to set his own little watch, now and then, by the great clock of humanity which runs on sun time.

But there is a better thing than the observance of Christmas day, and that is, keeping Christmas. Are you willing to forget what you have done for other people, and to

remember what other people have done for you; to ignore what the world owes you, and to think what you owe the world; to put your rights in the background, and your duties in the middle distance, and your chances to do a little more than your duty in the foreground; to see that your fellowmen are just as real as you are, and try to look behind their faces to their hearts. Hungry for joy; to own that probably the only good reason for your existence is not what you are going to get out of life, but what you are going to give to life; to close our book of complaints against the management of the universe, and look around you for a place where you

can sow a few seeds of happiness – are you willing to do these things even for a day? Then you can keep Christmas.

Are you willing to stoop down and consider the needs and the desires of little children; to remember the weakness and loneliness of people who are growing old; to stop asking how much your friends love you, and ask yourself whether you love them enough; to bear in mind the things that other people have to bear on their hearts; to try to understand what those who live in the same house with you really want, without waiting for them to tell you; to trim your lamp so that it will give more light and less smoke, and to carry it in front so that your shadow will fall behind you; to make a grave for your

ugly thoughts, and a garden for your kindly feelings, with the gate open – are you willing to do these things even for a day? Then you can keep Christmas.

Are you willing to believe that love is the strongest thing in the world- stronger than hate, stronger than evil, stronger than death- and that the blessed life that began in Bethlehem nineteen hundred years ago is the image and brightness of the Eternal Love? Then you can keep Christmas. And if you keep it for one day, why not for always?

As the holiday season comes into full swing, St. Jero me’s has been filled with a quiet energy of hard work and preparation. The elementary grades are almost ready to perform at the Christmas concert, and are anticipating the payoff of all of their efforts leading up to this point. On December 10, after the dress rehearsal, the Grade 4, 4/5 and 5 classes will be travelling to the Valley Lodge to perform some of our concert songs to the residents there, who may not otherwise be able to enjoy the live show. The concert will be live-streamed for those unable to attend, watch the St. Jerome’s Facebook page for the link! A final reminder, that “Straight Outta Bethlehem” will be performed at the Lakeland College theatre on December 12 at 7:00pm. We hope to see you there!

The Grade 6 students went Christmas caroling at the Lodge and the Hospital Long Term Care on the afternoon of December 2. At each stop, the students took time after singing to visit with the residents. It is so wonderful to have children and seniors mingle. Upon arriving back to the school after carolling, the Grade 6 students enjoyed some hot chocolate and goodies.

VES had their monthly assembly on December 5. After the land acknowledgement and the VES Song, the students had fun playing a reindeer-elf game. The Grade 6 Spirit Club made a presentation regarding We Day, showing us what they did in Edmonton, as well as what we are currently doing in VES and what we plan to do yet this year. The St. J basketball season is well underway, with the Grade 8/9 and Senior High teams already having competed in tournaments this year. The Grade 8/9 girls were in Lloydminster November 29 and 30 and played well with lots of close and suspenseful games. Coach Frankiw is looking forward to a great season with the girls! Both boys and girls Jr teams played against Chauvin on December 4th, with the boys winning 57-15 and the girls losing by a mere 9 points. The Senior Boys won the consolation final of their home tournament on the 29th and 30th, while the Senior Girls finished 7th after playing some tough competition ending with several close games. Go Spartans!

On November 28, a two-man team consisting of Levi Walker and Chase Stolz, headed North to Cold Lake to represent St. Jerome’s at a district bean bag tournament. They worked hard, had lots of fun, and made us all very proud! Go Spartans! Mr. Martin’s Grade 10 Phys Ed class has been travelling to the Stadium every morning for skating and lots of fun playing broom ball. While this month, Mr. Lewin’s Grade 9’s spend the first part

of their mornings at Lakeland College gym pumping iron, and playing squash and wallyball. Spartans are learning the importance and benefits of daily physical activity while having fun exercising in a variety of ways.

Marauders Wrap Up Season At Awards Banquet

Most valuable player and defensive MVP awards went to sophomore Landyn Herzog as Vermilion Marauders football concluded their 2019 season at their annual awards banquet.

“He was our MVP both on and off field,” said coach Lorne Maier as he announced the award. Herzog is a fierce defender who was known for his tackling prowess as well as skills on offence and special teams.

Ryland Fougere was the inaugural winner of the Kevin Gannon Memorial Offensive Player of the Year award.

Kevin’s family made a $1,000 donation to the Marauders in his name. Gannon was a staunch supporter of high school football.

“We decided it would be fitting to name our top offensive award in his honour,” said Maier.

The Gannons were unable at the last minute to attend the banquet and awards night to present the award. “That also meant we were unable to present them with the 2019 Phil McKerihan Spirit of the Marauders award,” said Maier. “We appreciated their support and it really reflected Marauder spirit.”

Fougere, who scored five touchdowns in one game and a total of 16 for the season, was held off the scoreboard twice. Once was in the first game of the season, and

the second time versus Hinton in Spruce Grove. He didn’t play in the second half of that game after a head tackle left him woozy. Half of the grade 11 student’s majors came against Edson including three in the playoff game.

Graduating player Zach Bodie received the team’s most improved award. Bodie was outstanding on the Marauder defence and special teams. Besides being one the toughest pound-for-pound tacklers, he knocked down and intercepted balls and returned punts and kickoffs.

Special teams player of the year was rookie Riley Cronin. He handled both punt and place-kicking roles as well as running in converts.

Second-year centre Mark Johnston was named most dedicated player.

Quarterback Tylin Vold was recognized as rookie of year, standing out from among a group of strong first year players.

That core of young talented players is a good omen for next season says Maier.

Besides the awards, the banquet also featured a guest speaker. Former mid1980s Marauder MVP Dale Bochon brought a message about dreams and detours. He called the opportunity “a perfect bookend to my Marauder career” and encouraged the players to the “carry the spirit of the game into their futures.” He also recounted how football made a differ-

ence in his son’s life.

After describing his own dreams, playing Marauder football after watching practices when he was in grade school, and

Coping With Grief During The Holiday Season

For some, the holidays are a time of joy and reconnection with friends and family.

But if you’ve suffered a loss, the holiday season can bring up extra feelings of sadness and yearning for your loved one, an object, or a way of life you have lost.

One way that you can cope with your sadness and yearning is to talk about how you feel. Sharing your sadness with people who care about you helps lift the heaviness that sadness often brings.

Other steps you can take to cope with your feelings of sadness and yearning include: Look at photos, watch videos or exchange stories with other people

about your loss.

Take part in activities that acknowledge and mark the loss, such as funeral or memorial services after a death. This time of year, some funeral homes and religious institutions offer services to help people grieve, too.

Surround yourself with people who make you feel safe and support you during your time of grief.

Actively participate in normal day-today activities. Being active and taking part in daily activities keeps you focused in the present.

Do something for yourself. Often we are so busy taking care of others we forget to focus on ourselves. Take time for yourself this season by doing something you enjoy, go for a walk, or try a new hobby such as yoga or meditation.

Make healthy decisions. Get enough sleep, eat healthy food regularly and if you drink alcohol, limit your intake. The more you take care of yourself, the better you’ll be able to get through each day.

Practice gratitude. Focus on the goodness around you. Thank those who have been caring and kind to youHealth Tools. Send thank-you notes to someone special or record things you are thankful for in a journal.

Get help if you need it. Holidays can be especially hard if you are already dealing with the death of a beloved family member or pet, or the breakup of a relationship or end of a job. Talk with your family physician or call the Mental Health Helpline at 1-877-303-2642.

Although it may seem that your feelings of sadness and yearning will last

forever, remind yourself that these feelings will lessen as time goes by.

Reacting to others If you find yourself being overly sensitive and easily offended by what other people say and do, you can: - Pause for a moment before responding to what you consider to be an insensitive comment or action.

- Keep yourself from becoming preoccupied with thoughts about an insensitive comment. Instead, concentrate on your breathing, count to 10, or recite a short prayer or poem that calms you.

- Remind yourself that you are under stress and not acting as you normally would.

Ask people around you to allow you some time to adjust to your new life situation.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR The County of Vermilion River is seeking a highly motivated person to join our team as Community Development Coordinator. Preferred qualifications include education in Business, Arts, Marketing or related field, along with 3-5 years experience in Community Development in a municipal or non-profit organization.

Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, website management programs, and social media is essential. You should be adept at working on projects and taking the lead. You must be able to work independently/with minimal supervision, but enjoy collaborating.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:     

Manage the grant programs to community groups for Recreation, FCSS, and Cemeteries, including application processes, eligibility evaluation, approvals, follow-up reporting, and payments.

Coordinate all internal and external advertising for the County (ie. Website, social media, quarterly newsletters, newspaper ads, print materials, signage, project campaigns, etc.)

Direct the team on the proper use and implementation of visual identity guide Work closely with community groups on initiatives and projects related to culture, recreation, history, community enhancement Work with Facilities team on promoting and enhancing recreation facilities (ie. Lindsay Evans Park, MacNabb Wildlife)

Local Credit Union Shares a Third of Their Profit with Community Members

Submitted Once again, the Board of Directors, comprised of locally elected members, voted to give back 33%, or more than $400,000, to their members for their loyalty and banking business in 2019.

“While we can offer nearly anything the banks in our community can, sharing profits is just one of the unique things that make us different. We are truly proud to be in a financial position that allows us

to give back a third of our profits to the people that support us” explained Dave Eremko, CEO of Vermilion Credit Union.

The Credit Union has a long history of sharing profits as the total nears $6 million returned to members since they started the program, based on member patronage, in 1999.

“On behalf of the Board, management and staff, I’d like to express our sincere appreciation to our members for their

continued support of our credit union.
