Under a light sprinkle of snow, Christmas wonder grew as spectators gathered along the parade route to watch as floats passed by with glittering Christmas lights, and Santa wished everyone a Merry Christmas.

The Festival of Trees took on a new approach held on Main Street this year, the trees were flanked by two fire pits where community members had the opportunity to warm their hands and make smores. The Jr. B. Tigers once again held their hotdog fundraiser at the ATCO building, and several businesses participated by offering refreshments and staying open late.

The Rotary Club provided hot chocolate and homemade cookies at Modern Edge Painting Ltd. for donations to the Haying In the 30’s cancer support group. In addition, the Rotary Club offered a matching donation of up to $1,000. Cookies had been donated by several community members Trees decorated by businesses on Main Adam and Asher McIntyre with Vermilion Chrysler. StudeBaker Ground Breaking Ceremony

Community and business dignitaries were eager to attend as StudeBaker Industries Ltd. held a Ground Breaking Ceremony at their new location in Mannville on November 26.

Owner, Ryan Baker, was born in Vermilion, raised on a farm at Minburn, and schooled in Mannville. He has been in the mechanical industry since 2005, and with the help of his wife, Joanna, opened StudeBaker in 2011.

“I really appreciate the diversity of industry in our area. I owe a lot of my learning and experiences to the journeyman and business owner I apprenticed under, Alton Ellingboe, at Minburn Motors.

We worked on everything there!

He was dual ticketed (Auto and Heavy) so I took the opportunity to do the same.

I learned that just because you haven’t seen it before doesn’t mean you can’t fix it. When a customer comes to you with a mechanical problem, no matter what it is on you need to adopt that problem as

your own, offer them assurance to alleviate some of their frustration and work through it,” said Ryan Baker.

He is very proud of the awards he received throughout his technical training and during his apprenticeship, and said that continuing to use that same striving for excellence attitude has been doing nothing but good things for them as a business. In May, 2018, he opened a shop on Claysmore Road which offered a change in going from one guy in a service truck to having four mechanical employees.

“I continue with my training and earning credentials from OEM manufactures and encourage my staff to do the same.

I am also proud of the fact that I am one of the youngest graduates of Lakeland College that has had the opportunity to go back and share my knowledge with up and coming apprentices through occasional contract instructor assignments,” said Baker.

The Vermilion Ridge Riders Snowmobile Club held their 8th Annual Snowmobile Expo at the Vermilion Regional Centre on November 30.

Sleds and approximately 400 spectators came from all over Alberta and Saskatchewan. One sled came from British Columbia, and a spectator from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

when I was a kid.’ A lot of it is nostalgia, and many get interested in fixing up the sleds and riding them. The modern manufacturers make very high powered expensive sleds, and the vintage ones offer people options to learn to drive them at a safe speed which is easier for a beginner,” said vice president, Chris Swan.

This year, the Expo featured a display celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Skidoo snowmobiles. A 1961 sled with wooden skis on it was the earliest in the collection.

Apple Gingerbread Cobbler Bottom 4 cups sliced apples 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 cup water Topping 1/4 cup white sugar 1/4 cup butter or oil 1 egg 1/2 cup buttermilk 1/4 cup cooking molasses 1 cup flour 1/2 teaspoon ginger 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon baking powder Assembly 1 tablespoon of corn starch 1 tablespoon water In a saucepan combine the brown sugar, cinnamon and water. Cook covered until the apples start to get tender. Set aside to cool while you make the cake topping. In a separate bowl beat together the white sugar and 1/4 cup butter and then beat in the egg. Stir in the buttermilk and molasses. Add in the flour, ginger, nutmeg, and sprinkle on the baking soda.

Stir in these dry ingredients. Combine the cornstarch and water, and stir until smooth. Stir the cornstarch mixture into the apple mixture. Pour apples into a 1.5 quart buttered baking dish. Top with the cake mixture and carefully smooth to cover the apple mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

One of the interesting parts of local history are the people who made that history. Many of these people are lost to history, but some remain thanks to the many local history books that tell their story.

This week, I am looking at Ruby Roebeck, born Ruby McClain.

Ruby Roebeck came to the Bowtell area very early in its history and remembers walking to school year-round, as well as the many parties that would be held in the area through the year. One of the parties was a Halloween party in 1925 when Jack Coward supplied the red fuses for a beautiful red glow for the party. Everyone came out for the party

and dressed up. They also played a game called Old Witch, which involved passing parts of the witch around while everyone had their eyes closed. The teeth were made from a turnip, the heart was a potato and a peeled grape was the eye.

Roebeck also remembers the many quilting bees in the area where everyone would come out to work on their quilts.

During some of the larger quilting bees, 10 to 12 ladies would come for dinner or supper and work on a single quilt together.

“Those were the good old days,” she said in her recollection.

In 1932, Ruby would marry Roland Roebuck and they would move from the Bowtell area and settle in Creston. While their time in Bowtell had come to an end, Ruby would remember the community for many years to come. Her and Roland

would have two girls, Mildred and Leona, and several grandchildren.

In Creston, Ruby would go on to become president of the local Red Cross, the chair of the Christmas Seal campaign, and on the executive of the organization for the entire province of British Columbia. She was also heavily active in the church both in Bowtell and in Creston.

Her years of sewing in Bowtell would also play a big role in her later life in Creston. She would teach sewing at a church in Creston beginning in 1946 and continuing for many years after, well into the retirement of her husband.

Upcoming Ron Moses Community Christmas Dinner

The 24th Annual Ron Moses Community Christmas Dinner will be hosted at the Vermilion Senior’s Centre on December 25, with entertainment at 12 p.m. and dinner at 1 p.m.

It is an opportunity for people who are alone on Christmas Day to enjoy an hour of entertainment and a meal. The meal includes the traditional turkey, three other meat choices, with all the trimmings including perogies and cabbage rolls. Last year, approximately 200 people were served.

The Ron Moses Christmas Dinner is open to everyone. In the past, it hosted those who have events other days during the holiday season but not on Christmas

Day, and people new to the community.

The meal can be delivered to those working or those kept in their homes for medical reasons. Transportation for those without a ride to the Senior’s Centre can be arranged.

“Ron didn’t want to see anyone be alone for Christmas; it’s a family affair.

The community is such a giving community, and their donations help to make it a success each year! I’d sure like to find some wild meat to serve this year,” said organizer Lynda Moses.

The Ron Moses Christmas Dinner is still in search of entertainers, as well as volunteers to help clean up.

You can volunteer, reserve a seat, or book transportation or delivery by calling Lynda at 780-853-1818.

TD’s Marlene Beattie - 40 Year Anniversary

Vermilion TD Bank honoured Marlene Beattie for her 40th Anniversary with the bank on November 26. Marlene spent her first year with TD in Saskatoon, and the remaining 39 years at the Vermilion Branch.

She began as a teller and has now worked her way through to Branch Manager.

“I like the people (both the staff and the customers), and I believe in the institution of TD; offering great products and services.

We have a great team and I I like being able to support various things in the community such as our five years of being involved with TD Tree Day. It has been wonderful to have new and old customers come in to celebrate today!” said Marlene Beattie.

Birders Come Together In Vermilion To Participate In The 120th Christmas Bird Count

Submitted Another Christmas Bird Count season is around the corner! Between 14 December 2019 and 5 January 2020, tens of thousands of bird and winter enthusiasts will rally together to count millions of birds across the continent as part of the 120th year of this long-running wildlife survey. On December 14, participants in Vermilion and area will take part in this fun winter tradition, many rising before dawn and counting birds until sunset!

Each year, Birds Canada and the National Audubon Society help coordinate and support the efforts of more than 2500 counts throughout the Western Hemisphere. Christmas Bird Counts are run across Canada and the United States, as well as in Latin America, the

Caribbean, and some Pacific Islands.

Data collected during the Vermilion count include details on the number of birds of each species seen or heard within a local 24-km diameter circle. Surveying this circle year after year contributes valuable long-term information on how winter birds are faring, both in your locale and across the country.

Novice or experienced, the Christmas Bird Count is for everyone. Whether you like exploring forests, fields, and waters in search of lingering migrants, or prefer counting feeder birds from your window with a warm mug in hand, the Christmas Bird Count offers diverse opportunities for participation. No matter how you contribute, all Christmas Bird Count observations are used to study the health of winter bird populations over time and

guide conservation strategies to help birds and their habitats.

“Every Christmas Bird Count participant is an important part of this valuable project for birds,” says Yousif Attia, Birds Canada’s Christmas Bird Count Coordinator. “Whether you participate for bird conservation, for some friendly birding competition, or for an excuse to get outside in the winter, your efforts are meaningful for birds.” The skills and dedication of thousands of volunteer Citizen Scientists harnessed during the Christmas Bird Count achieve incredible results that professional scientists and wildlife biologists could never accomplish alone.

The Christmas Bird Count took root over a century ago when 27 birders in 25 localities from Toronto, Ontario to Pacific

Grove, California, led by ornithologist Frank Chapman, proposed a conservation-oriented alternative to the traditional ‘side hunt,’ a Christmas Day competition to hunt the most birds and small mammals. This alternative initiative to identify, count, and record all the birds found on Christmas Day 1900 has turned into one of North America’s longestrunning wildlife monitoring programs.

The Vermilion River Naturalist Society organizes this event every year and the Vermilion participants will have the official Birds Canada/Audubon sign in their vehicle windows.

Elks Mannville Donates On Monday, November 25, the National Elks President Derek Barkley visited the Royal Purple Elks Ladies of Mannville. Several other Lodges attended from Myrnam, Irma, and Elk Point. A short meeting was held and then a time for fellowship followed. The Elks Ladies presented Derek with a $500 cheque for the Elks Children’s Fund and the Elks Men presented Derek with a $300 cheque for the same charity. December 2 the first Monday of the month is birthday cake and anniversaries too. Cake, coffee and fellowship at 10:30 a.m.

December 3 the choir Happy Harmonizers will be singing along with the Touch of Brass the bell ringers at 7 p.m. Food

donation or silver collection it’s always a great evening, everyone welcome.

BINGO is the first and third Thursday, December 5 and December 19. Just in time for Christmas. Numbers and the jackpot is $270.

Once a month Wednesday December 18 is Pot Luck at 5:30 p.m., bring a pot-luck dish, a friend, $5 cover charge.

The Student Managed Enterprise hosted their annual pop up shop at the Shack at Lakeland College in Vermilion on November 29 - 30.

This year, the Agricultural Business students focussed on the theme - 30 years of the Student Managed Farm.

They featured local hidden artists and selected products to represent 30 years of alumni.

“We would like to send a huge thank you to the community for their support and to the alumni for their suggestions and for acting as vendors. We wouldn’t be able to host this event without your support,” said lead student, Emma Robb.

The students used 10 weeks of class activities to prepare for the event and said that it assisted in teaching them about how to run a business. Overall, everyone enjoyed the opportunity to view the specialty and seasonal products.

A s S t . J e r o m e’s Spartans head into the season of Advent, we are preparing in many different ways for the coming of Jesus. Mrs. Martin and Mrs. McCormack’s Grade Three class performed the traditional Advent Happigram presentation on November 27th. Students shared ideas of small deeds we can all do to prepare ourselves for the season of Advent. Readings were shared to tell the stories of Jesus’ ancestors as the Jesse tree was decorated with symbols from the Old Testament. The Jesse tree was created to help people link the custom of decorating Christmas trees to the events leading up to Jesus birth. Students beautifully sang “Go Light Your World” and the first Advent candle was lit. The students also delivered handmade Advent calen-

“The Tell-tale Heart” short story by Edgar Allen Poe. They worked together in groups of 4-6 to solve clues in order to open the various locks to allow them to open a wooden box to find a prize inside.

Our Senior Boys Volleyball team came home from provincials as silver medal champions! We are so very proud of all of you and your hard work and dedication. Our school held a Celebration of Success on Thursday, November 28 to recognize all of the accomplishments of our sports teams this fall season. Volleyball, Golf, Cross Country Runners, and Football players of all ages were recognized. The pep rally ended with a classic volleyball match between the Senior Boys and Senior Girls team. Fun was had by all and the comradery between teammates shone through. And, as one sports season at St. J comes to an end, another begins… Junior and Senior High Basketball has started, with both the Senior Boys

and Girls playing in tournaments over the November 29 and 30 weekend. Best of luck Spartans!

On November 27, to commemorate “Movember” and raise awareness for cancer, mental health awareness, and suicide prevention Spartans of all ages were invited to sport a moustache.

“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…” thanks to our “special helper elves” who came to each classroom from Kindergarten to Grade 8 and decorated trees with all the students. We appreciate the festive feel and the children had so much fun making their tree look beautiful.

Up and Coming Events: Reminder that there will be no Hot Lunch on Tuesday, December 10 for Grades 1-5 because we will be at Lakeland College for our Christmas concert dress rehearsal. The Christmas concert, titled “Straight Outta Bethlehem” will be presented at the college on Thursday, December 12 at 7:00pm.

This musical theatre production is a new twist on the story of Jesus’ birth, as told by eyewitnesses the night the Baby King arrived in Bethlehem. It is a heartwarming story, and a great reminder this Christmas season that God is with us and we can all be adopted into God’s family.

On November 21, a group of Grade 6 VIB E Ad v i s or y students hosted a Family Lego Night in the school’s Learning Commons. The students set up Lego challenges for families to work on together. Families could then take a picture at a photo booth the students set up. It was a great evening of connecting as a larger school family with 30 families attending. This has motivated the VIBE Advisory students to organize a couple more family nights later on in the school year. Thanks to everyone who

made it out and to our students for organizing a successful evening of Lego family fun.

The Grade 4 classes took a field trip on November 27 to learn more about waste management in Vermilion. This was part of the Waste in Our World science unit where students learned about reducing, reusing, recycling, repairing, and recovering waste.

Their first stop was at Valley Auto Parts to discuss reusing vehicle parts. From there, they went to the Town of Vermilion recycle lot to view a variety of recycling bins and grass recycling areas. Their next stop was the Community Closet where they talked about reusing clothing. Going north

Their last stop was at the Vermilion Bottle Depot where they learned about bottle and can recycling from Mr. Elkadry. Remember we can all do our part to reduce the amount of waste in our world.

A big thank you to Karen Gannon for her generous donation to the VES Lunch Program. Karen also donated a whole pile of new Christmas decorations to VES. Thank you also to the Vermilion & Area Crisis Line for their donation to VES. Both are very much appreciated.

VES students have been busy reading their little hearts out. They have goals to meet weekly, monthly and for the year. Grade 1 students get their picture taken when they have read 100 books each. Grade 2 students have a yearly goal of 20 AR (Accelerated Reader) points.

Once these students reach their halfway goal of 10 points, they get their picture

taken with their favourite book and then it is posted in the Learning Commons. The big goal is if a Grade 2 student reaches their 20 points (annual goal) by the halfway point of our school year (which is January 31), then they get to order a new AR book for the Learning Commons, print their name on the inside cover, and be the first person to read it. The same applies for all grades; they just have a different goal. Grade 3 has a year end goal of 30 points, Grade 4 is 40 points, and so on. Your child may come home and want to discuss what kind of book they should order. If you need help making a choice, google “good books for kids”. Also, at the end of the school year, we have an AR celebration for the students who have reached their year’s goal.
