Uniquely U Styles and Vermilion Jewellers donated $250 to Vermilion Elementary School’s Lunch Program Society and $250 to St. Jerome’s Hot Lunch Program.

“Not everyone can afford it, but everyone needs to eat. Donations like this help make the program available for the less fortunate. Eating a good, nutritious lunch is important for health, but it is also vital to help children concentrate and learn,” said

VES Principal, Calvin Anhorn.

“It’s a well used program for sure,” added Allan Chase, St. Jerome’s Principal.

In response owner, Rita Elliott said, “Keeping children fed is always close

to everyone’s hearts and we thought this was a nice way to give back to our community. For all of the customers near and far who have supported us throughout the year, we wanted to give back and pay it forward.”

Poverty Simulation In Vermilion

The Leaning Network’s Dan Nash facilitated a Poverty Simulation at the Vermilion Regional Centre on November 21.

Developed by the United Way, the Poverty Simulation included over 70 participants from Kalyna PCN, the Town of Vermilion, Alberta Health Services, and community agencies.

According to Carol Coleman, participants arranged in family groups and were challenged to visit agency people to deal with their fictitious financial scenarios.

Throughout this process, they attempted to make ends meet in a particular time slot.

“It’s all part of a learning experience to identify what is the experience of being low income, and reflect upon how we deliver service,” said Coleman.

In Canada according to http://www. cwp-csp.ca, 1.3 million children live in

conditions of poverty; that’s 1 in 5. They state that in Edmonton this statistic rises to 1 in 3 children in single-parent families, and 1 in 2 for Status First Nations children. They identify that nearly two million seniors live beneath the most basic standard of living and that residents in Nunavut spend twice as much on food on average as the rest of the country. They estimate that 4 million people in Canada experience food insecurity.

Canada Without Poverty estimates that 1 in 10 Canadians cannot afford to fill their medical prescriptions, and that food insecure households were 80 per cent more likely to report having diabetes, 60 per cent more likely to report high blood pressure, and 70 per cent more likely to report food allergies.

They state that a McMaster University study found a 21-year difference in life expectancy between the poorest and wealthiest residents of Hamilton, Ontario.

They go on to say that 3 million Cana-

dian households are precariously housed, meaning they live in unaffordable, below standards, and/or overcrowded conditions. In 2016, they estimated that 235,000 people in Canada experienced homelessness, with roughly 35,000 people being homeless on any given night. They state that almost 1 in every 5 households experience serious housing affordability issues (spending over 50 per cent of their low income on rent) which puts them at risk of homelessness.

“The simulation is intended to make you feel the same feelings of people who are in your situation every day for years sometimes. We are trying to reach a level of empathy beyond just having fun,” said Dan Nash, program coordinator for Learning Network Educational Services to the participants.

“This session puts it in perspective; transportation is a concern. Poverty impacts health,” said Mayor Caroline McAuley.

Overall, participants enjoyed the opportunity to challenge their perceptions and change their perspectives on those living in poverty, and how they can address providing services in the future.

GEORGINA ROSE SARANCHUK (nee Zaharia)

1950-2019 Georgina Rose Saranchuk (nee Zaharia) passed away unexpectedly on September 30, 2019 at the U of A Hospital, Edmonton. In the previous twelve years Georgina had ‘fought the good fight’ to overcome several serious health problems.

Inspite of all her troubles, she always had a positive attitude about the excellent care and concern that the many doctors, nurses, lab technicians and others in Alberta's medical community displayed to her at all times.

The funeral rites were held at St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church on October 9 & 10, 2019 and the interment followed at the Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Edmonton.

Georgina will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her husband Taras and son Taras Jr., her sister Lillian (Len) Kohn; brother George (Gloria) Zaharia, sister-in-law Joan (Don) Popowich and all the nieces and nephews plus their families.

Georgina was predeceased by her parents Rose and George Zaharia; also her mother and father-in-law Jean and Michael Saranchuk.

Vermilion Youth Dance At World Championships

Four Vermilion dancers have been selected to compete as part of Team Canada at the International Dance Organization’s World Tap Dance Championships in Riesa, Germany held November 26 – 30.

Asia Clark, Aaralynn Tupper, and Jett Wilson were selected to be on the Children’s Tap Team Canada; and Phoenix Wilson was selected to be on the Junior Tap Team Canada. Many of their family members, dance family companions, and community members were thrilled to support them and are eager to hear about their experience abroad.

According to parent, Sabrena Clark, the dancers will head to Calgary for a choreography session before they fly out.

“We are thrilled from how many children applied, that four children from a team of 18 were selected; proportionately this is a huge number from our town. I can’t be more proud as a mom. My daughter is 10 and going across the ocean to represent Canada, and Germany is where my family is from. All of the dancers worked super hard; even in moments of waiting, they volunteered to start practicing their routine,” said Sabrena Clark.

“It will be a great experience for the team. We have been practicing down in Calgary since August, with famous choreographer Lisa La Touché who fly’s in from New York to work with the team. The four dancers from Vermilion auditioned against dancers from across Western Canada and were hand picked by her. It is competitive dance and these dancers have had some great discipline training from Vermilion’s Dance Impressions by Ryan. Very little adjustment was needed to bring the local dancer’s current level of discipline up to meet that of a team competing against the best in the world. It’s an accomplishment for rural small-town Alberta to be sending dancers to Team Canada.

It’s a once in a life-time opportunity and a big commitment for a 3-minute dance routine across the globe. However, the memories made, experience, new friends and opened doors will last a lifetime. The team practices hard and gives 110% during each performance – as a parent you can not be prouder. I’m excited to attend and cheer for Team Canada’s Tap formations next week,” said parent, Brandon Tupper.

Instructor and parent, Ryan Wilson said, “It’s awesome to have the community support this amazing accomplishment! As a parent I feel so proud to have both of my children be on Team Canada. The dedication and discipline it takes to be rewarded with an opportunity of this caliber and recognition is incredible for them. They are representing not only their family and fellow dance peers but also are a part of a much bigger picture of representing Vermilion, Alberta, and Canada. The opportunity to work with and learn from some of the best tap dancers and choreographers in the world gives them a entirely new perspective on dance and the opportunity, relationships, and connections it can build in your life.

As a dance instructor having four of my students that I have trained since they were preschool age be selected for Team Canada is an accomplishment I have dedicated my entire adult life towards. As a dancer myself who was born in Vermilion, grew up in Vermilion, and trained my entire life in Vermilion I have a unique perspective. When I was 19 years old and thought I would pursue professional opportunities in dance it was brought to my attention very abruptly that because I was trained in a very small town with very limited resources by teachers who I adored but had limited qualifications themselves I lacked the ability to be able to pursue anything greater.

I made it a life goal at that time that no student of mine would ever put in ‘years’ of training and have that be their outcome.

Through the next 15+ years I completely retrained my body, my awareness, my level of knowledge in pursuit of the highest most skilled dance teacher education and Certification Programs that I could find.

The level of certification I was after was only granted to me nearly a short five and a half years ago. To have even one of my students make the team would have validated the amount of work, dedication, and courage it took for me to change my level of knowledge and understanding in my own teaching. Now my What, When, and How approach I have to teaching dance gives my student’s a much more accurate layering of foundational skills every year. It allows my students to pursue opportunities

with success because of the years of training they have put into foundational work.

Results like this give me the confidence to believe that more of these kinds of opportunities are going to be available for our students. Having four students make the team is perhaps one of the most overwhelming feelings I have ever experienced.

I am so proud of them. To all of these students, their parents, all of my current students and parents, and all of my past students and parents - this is an achievement for all of us and all of Vermilion. My entire life has been invested in dance in Vermilion. Thank you for believing in me while I believed in your children and trusting in the process.”

The Good Life Institute hosted their 5th Annual Savor event at the Vermilion Regional Centre on November 22.

Approximately 300 people from the area attended and had the opportunity to sample from 10 food and beverage vendors. Scotch, beer and wine tastings took place; and guests enjoyed h o r s d ’o e u v r e s , d o o r p r i ze s , a n d socializing throughout the evening.

You just have to make sure you have a cauliflower, some milk, and an onion and you are good to go. As in previous cream soups articles, the soup base starts with a roux (pronounced roo). Its base is one of the five mother sauces that chef’s study. It is called Bechamel in France, but on the prairies, we call it a basic white sauce.

Cauliflower contains an alphabet soup of nutrients, flavonoids, antioxidants and vitamins. Surprisingly it is ver y high in Vitamin C. Cauliflower contains 73 percent of our daily needs of vitamin C in one cup. When consumed weekly, cauliflower has been shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Cream of Cauliflower Soup 4 cups of cauliflower chopped into spoon size pieces 1 large chopped golden skinned onion 1 tablespoons of olive oil plus 1 tablespoon butter

4 tablespoons butter 4 tablespoons flour 4 cups milk 1 1/4 teaspoon sea salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1 teaspoon dill weed Slices of graded old cheddar cheese (optional) Cook the cauliflower and strain.

Chop the onion into small size pieces.

Sauté the onion in a fr y pan in the olive oil and 1 tablespoon butter until cooked. In a heavy bottomed pot and melt the 4 tablespoons of butter, add the flour and stir until thick and slowly add the milk while stirring. Each time after adding 1/2 cup of milk, let the mixture cook until it thickens and then add the next 1/2 cup of milk and so on.

You will have a thick cream sauce; add the dill, salt and pepper. Stir in the cauliflower and sautéed onions. Taste it and adjust the salt and pepper to taste. Makes four - six servings.

This year we have 12 market steers. Our junior members are all looking forward for fall fling in Bonnyville from November 22 to 23. On December 1, we will be having our regional volleyball. It should be a lot of fun!

When settlers arrived in an area, they would set up a few services. First would be the post office, which would give a district its name. The next would be a school, to educate the children of the area. The third thing would be a church, and often that church would serve as a congregation meeting place for multiple denominations.

The North Vermilion United Church was built in 1907, with many in the area donating their time to the building including the Reverend Aldridge, who would be the first pastor at the church. Through the years, the congregation’s size would grow, with more and more settlers arriv-

ing in the area. The McPhee family was well remembered at the church for being leaders and providing their home for the minister to live in as well. They would host strawberry ice cream festivals on their lawn during church gatherings.

The first student at the church was Carl Drew, from 1929 to 1930, followed by Charles Ferguson in 1931 to 1932.

Unfor tunately, by the 1950s, the number of people attending the church was down to almost zero. With the church standing empty more often than not, the decision was made to move the church to a more central location to increase the number of people attending.

The decision was made that on March 15, 1954, the North Vermilion United Church would move to the Allandale district on land donated by the Darling

family. At this point, the church would be called the Allandale United Church.

Following the move, which was done

by Duncan McPhee, Charlie Armstrong, Ross Goodridge, Ike Gooderidge and Ed Wilson, the church was ready for its first service at its new location on May 2, 1954.

The ser vice was attending by 60 people, with Stanley Calder of Bow Island serving as the student of the church. Mossy McPhee, a longtime pianist for the church, would play as well.

The church would be dedicated on May 16 at 11:30 a.m.

The Allandale Church would operate for the next several years, serving as a vital meeting place and place of worship for many in the area of Allandale.

Everyone gets angry sometimes, even small children. But some children and teens have so much trouble controlling their anger that they shove, hit, or make fun of other people. This causes them trouble at home and at school. They often have a hard time making friends. And their aggression makes parenting them a challenge.

Aggression is any behaviour that hurts other people. It can be physical—hitting or pushing—or verbal, such as name-calling.

How can you prevent aggression in your child?

Set rules and consequences • Make house rules for your family. Let your child know the consequences (such as loss of certain privileges) for not following the rules.

• If you say you will take away a privi-

lege, do it. It can be hard to follow through when your child says he or she is sorry. But your child needs to know you mean what you say.

• Create a chart with rules and chores for younger children. Your child can earn stars or other stickers for completed chores or good behaviour. These stars can be turned in for privileges, such as more play time or a game night with the family.

Create empathy • Ask your child how he or she would feel if someone pushed him or her on the playground.

• Read stories to young children about a child coping with a problem in a positive way.

• When reading with your child or watching a TV show, ask what was good about a character’s behaviour, and what was not good. What could

Clandonald Agricultural Society Submitted

Fall has been a challenge for our farmers this year. Hoping everyone gets their crops off safely.

To start the spirit of Christmas, the Clandonald School is hosting a movie night on Thursday, November 28 at 7 p.m. The movie being featured is The Star. The cost is $5 per person or $20 per family. Then on November 30, Christmas in the Country Craft and Trade Show takes place at the Clandonald Community Hall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Mark December 12 on your calendars for the Clandonald Kindergarten Christmas Ham and Turkey Bingo at 7 p.m. in the Clandonald Community Hall. The always anticipated Clandonald School Christmas Concert is on December 19 at 7 p.m.—a sure way to get ready for Christmas.

The other two ask, “What happened to you?”

Bill says, “That Charlie, he snores so loud, I was kept awake watching him all night. I can’t do that another night so one of you has got to do it!”

Since Charlie snores so loudly, no one else wants to room with him, but they finally agree to take turns.

The next night is Oscar’s turn. In the morning, the same thing – hair all standing up, eyes all bloodshot. Oscar declares, “Man, that Charlie shakes the roof. And he sleeps so hard, I couldn’t wake him! I watched him all night.”

The third night is Steve’s turn. The next morning Steve comes to breakfast bright eyed and bushy tailed.”

The other two can’t believe it.

“What happened?” they ask, “How on earth did you sleep with all that racket?”

Steve says, “Well, as we got ready for bed, I went and tucked Charlie into bed and kissed him good night. Then he watched ME all night long.”

Second Year Early Learning and Child Care students at Lakeland College have been hosting a Miles of Smiles play program for children.

The program serves families in the community and acts as their on-site practicum. The students decorated a Mexico themed room for preschool children, and an ocean themed room for infant/toddler aged children. They took care of child registration, planned their snacks and activities, and have been observing them throughout the day; all while under staff supervision.

Student, Reena Reena said, “This program provides the actual environment of a day care. We have organized snacks and catered to allergies, and provided science, math, indoor and outdoor activities. The preschool children love reading!

When we do free play, we can see the interest areas the children have (trucks, kitchen toys, dolls, etc.)

The 10-Year Strategic Farm Plan

No matter your age, it is never too early or late to put together a 10-year strategic plan for your farm.

“Farmers are always busy with their daily and seasonal tasks,” says Dean Dyck, farm business management specialist at the Alberta Ag-Info Centre.

“When asked what their plan is for the next 10 years, they often say they haven’t had a chance to work on it yet. Whether the next generation is ready to take over, or you are in the prime of your farming career, you need to ask yourself what the farm business will look like 10 years from now.”

The first step in developing a strategy is to ask how long the business will exist.

Will it exist for 5 more years or 25 more years? The planning horizon is often closely tied to the age of the operator.

“If you are young and recently entered farming, your planning horizon may be quite long. However, if you are 55, your planning horizon could be somewhat shorter depending on the direction of the farm operation,” he says.

The second step is to define where the business is going. “A younger operator may consider an aggressive growth strategy by adding one or more new enterprises or expanding the existing enter-

prises,” he explains. “Other alternatives to consider are staying the same size, changing the crop and/or livestock enterprises, or processing and marketing of farm products.”

He says that an older operator may consider these strategies depending on their ability to take on the risk. A higher priority may be retirement and the continuation of the farm business.

Questions that need to be asked include: • How long will I farm?

• How long will I physically and mentally be able to continue?

• If my desire is for the farm to carry on, who is the successor?

• Do they want to take over the farm?

• Am I grooming them to be the next farm manager?

• Do I have a plan? If so, is it written and who knows about it?

If there is no successor, Dyck says to then ask yourself if you have an estate plan.

“Filing your income tax on a cash basis allows for the deferral of tax through the use of various strategies. But when you exit the business, this tax becomes due and payable, and the biggest beneficiary of your estate could be the Canada Revenue Agency. Do you want that? If you are in this category, maybe it is a good

time to develop an exit strategy that will minimize the tax you will pay as you wind down your farm business and you transfer assets into your estate. Is it time to talk to your accountant about this?”

If you have a successor, determine the shared vision for the farm or ranch.

“The vision is the shared image of the family’s definition of success and what the family wants the business and legacy to be. Having a clear vision allows the family to set goals and address the dreams of the family. This is critical to the success of the family, the individuals and to the farm business.”

Dyck says that the discussion about the long-term strategic plan of the farm should start with a family meeting and asking some simple yet complex questions: What do we desire for our family, the founders, the successors, and the nonfarm members?

What will our family story and legacy be?

What do we want for the next generation and possibly future generations?

How will our family values influence our vision and where we want to go?

How will the farm business be part of our family vision?

Who is leading the farm business now and into the future, and how are they lead-

ing?

What are the opportunities and the strengths of our farm business?

“Although the answers to these questions may not be clear cut, they can provide a good base for discussion and the start of a plan. These answers will also create an awareness for that 10-year plan and a go forward framework on how the business will evolve. They will also provide clarity to all involved including those who no longer live on the farm.”

Snowmobiles, Quads And Unharvested Crops

“Because of poor conditions this year, there are still unharvested crops in fields in many parts of the province,” says Neil Blue, provincial crop market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “It’s important that quad and snowmobile operators stay clear of these.”

He says that riding across unharvested fields is not a good idea for at least two reasons.

“Doing so can damage the crop that may yet be harvested. Also, an unharvested crop can pose a significant barrier to quads and snowmobiles and trying cross such a crop can result in damage to both machine and rider.”

He adds that it is important to always ask permission before entering upon or riding across lands under producer control, whether owned or rented.

“Not only is it a significant safety issue, it’s also a question of respect. You should always ask permission or else stick to riding on designated snowmobile or quad trails.”

The County of Vermilion River was excited to host the first ever Reap the Rewards event which was held November 15, at the Kitscoty Hall.

ATCO Electric Ltd. has applied, under the Hydro and Electric Energy Act, to rebuild the existing 144-kilovolt Transmission Line 7L65 to allow the facility to operate at full thermal capacity.

Transmission Line 7L65 is located between the existing Vegreville 709S Substation and the existing Vermilion 710S Substation. The Commission issued a notice of the applications on January 31, 2019, and a notice of hearing on May 2, 2019. The Commission cancelled the hearing and placed the applications in abeyance on July 5, 2019, in response to a request from ATCO Electric to allow it additional time to consult with stakeholders and consider recently proposed route adjustments.

ATCO Electric applied to amend its applied-for routes and proposed an alteration to the preferred route and a new alternative route for Transmission Line 7L65. Application amendments were submitted by ATCO Electric on November 1, 2019, and review of the applications in Proceeding 24102 has now resumed.

The Commission may approve the preferred route, the alternative route, or a combination of the preferred route and one or more alternative route segments.

They “rallied with courage and skill” and were undefeated at zone playoffs in Paradise Valley on November 16 winning the championship banner for the 2019 season. On November 20, every Spartan lined the hallways singing our school song, followed by cheers and high fives for the players as they headed off to 1A Volleyball Provincials in Bow Valley. Grade 6 students in Mrs. Beaudette’s class, with help from Mrs. Jackson, planted seeds in a tower garden last month. They were all excited to taste the rewards, I don’t know if salad has ever tasted better! Some of the Grade 4/5 Spartans had the privilege of reading to residents at the Valley Lodge.

It’s a win-win situation for all, as the Spartans build their reading fluency and enjoy connecting with “the grandmas and the grandpas”.

On November 15 and 16, the 27 member Grade 4-6 student drama club put on a play entitled “To Be a Star” by D. M. Larson to two audiences of about 150 people. They also performed it in front of the students and staff on November 19.

The play was made possible due to FreeDrama.net. We were fortunate to have Marton, a Grade 6 student, make all the props for the play. We tip our hats to Mrs. Doherty, Mrs. Joa and Ms. Wagner, who were instrumental in making this production a success.

On November 18 and 19, the Kindergarten students had the opportunity to explore the Fire Training School in our community. The afternoon consisted of touring the building to see what students do there compared to what we do in our school, learning what to do if there is a fire in our home or on our bodies, helping the fireman suit up to fight fire, suiting up themselves and even taking a ride in the fire truck. This field trip provided students

an opportunity to learn more about safety as well as see another service within our community. A huge thank you to the Fire Training School for making this opportunity happen.

The Roots of Empathy babies were at VES last week. The Grade 2 students got to see how the babies shared every single emotion they were feeling by using their sounds and bodies. When the babies showed that they were having an unpleasant feeling, mom was able to help them. When they showed they were having a pleasant feeling, they were able to share that feeling and make others around them also feel pleasant. By watching the babies, the students learned that it was very important to share all feelings, getting help to deal with the unpleasant ones, and sharing the contagious pleasant ones. They learned that feelings are a sign to others and we also need to respond when our friends need help.

There are no bad emotions.

The Grade 6 VIBE Advisory is organizing a Family Lego Night for VES families on November 21 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Learning Commons. This is a drop-in evening, so come join in on some Lego family fun as it fits with your schedule.

On November 16, 2019, fish and wildlife officers received a call on the Report A Poacher line from concerned hunters who found three mule deer shot and left to waste south of Vermillion, west of Highway 41 on Township Road 494. At approximately 4:30 p.m., witnesses heard shots from the area. A vehicle with the following description was observed in the field: • 2019 dark coloured Dodge Ram 1500 • Bright white headlights • De c al s /st i c ker s o n t h e bac k window • Possible slip tank or tool box in truck box

After shooting, the suspect drove up to one of the deer, did not get out of his vehicle and left the area. At this time, witnesses could see all three deer laying in the field. The suspect was described as a lone male driver who appeared to be short in stature and wearing a light coloured ball cap.

Fish and Wildlife officers are seeking the public’s assistance with the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Report a Poacher line at 1-800-632-3800 or submit an online report at alberta.ca/report-poacher.aspx.
