“It’s exciting; this is a great way to keep a strong business in our community and nice to have new entrepreneurs

Co-owner and sales consultant, Lisa Beveridge, said that she is thrilled to be a part of what is going on downtown. According to her, they hit the ground running and she was happy to have had previous experience order-

ing and mixing paint. She also pointed out that Benjamin Moore is part of a buying group, so they partnered up with designer Laramy Gibson from Studio Laric.

Hancraft Aeromotive – New Location

Hancraf t Aeromotive recently opened their doors for business in Vermilion, offering maintenance and re-build services to light, recreational aircraft.

The business has been in operation in the area since 1995, but is now eager to have a maintenance location with runway access at the Vermilion Airport. Renovations are ongoing restoring the old recycling centre back to its original use as an aircraft hangar; and a bi-fold door was just installed to allow airplanes in and out.

ATCO held an Open House for their Buffalo Creek Transmission Project at the Mannville Recreation Centre on October 16.

Part of a larger project of the Alberta Electric System Operator, ATCO will work in collaboration with AltaLink to complete the project. The project includes installation of a new transmission development to expand and enhance the system from Vermilion to Nilrem and Provost to Edgerton. It is expected to maintain reliable electricity supply, accommodate load growth and provide reasonable options for future generation access in the Lloydminster area.

Five possible route concepts for the transmission line were examined and area land owners and residents had the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback.

“Better connectivity creates a stronger system,” said Environment and Land Departments consultant Laurie Jenkin.

The 144 kilovolt transmission line will run on steel monopoles from the existing 7L65 Transmission Line near the Village of Mannville into a new substation, which will be known as Drury. From there, a new single circuit 240 kilovolt transmission line will be constructed on wooden H-frame structures to the service territory boundary. ATCO plans to potentially begin construction in 2021.

Area landowner Alice Stafinski said that one of the questions she had was why they weren’t putting the lines underground. She said the response she had been given was because they have issues with corrosion.

“Steel posts make a lot more sense than the wood posts. Making things better is always a good thing, but there is always somebody that’s going to be affected by it. We are very lucky in Alberta that the Alberta Utilities Commission makes sure there are hearings and that projects have to address concerns.

I appreciate that I got the information package mailed to

me ahead of time because I was able to come with questions prepared. ATCO has several representatives here and all of my questions have been answered,” said Stafinski.

The reason for having the multiple route concepts was to ensure after eliminating possible concerns like proximity to residences, environmentally sensitive areas, wetlands, planned developments, existing infrastructure, agricultural operations, etc. that ATCO would select the least obstructive route.

In partnership with the University of Alberta’s School of Public Health, A l b er t a H ealt h Ser v i c es h oste d a Community Conversation at Vermilion Elementary School on October 15.

Representatives from local organizations and facilities attended to review results on food environments for children and youth in Vermilion.

During the past year, groups in Vermilion have par ticipated by supplying data and recommendations for the study. Vermilion is one of 14 communities participating, and Public Health dietician, Elizabeth Fraser welcomed everyone.

change happen. It ’s not just about choices, it’s about environments; what is available and how affordable is it?”

It was noted that schools and child care centres, the hospital vending machines, and the stadium were among locations obser ved but that more facilities could access information.

Krista Milford, U of A Project Coordinator added that something really unique Vermilion offers is the Wellness Coalition’s Cooking Class. She encouraged increasing awareness and identi-

fying what healthy food looks like. She also suggested working with the Town for possible future zoning or policies for healthy choices in the community.

Results given in the nutrition report c ar d in c lu d e d t h at fo o d s k ill s are higher in Vermilion than the provincial level. This was determined because though it is not required, at one of the schools, children in grades 7 - 9 all have the opportunity to learn food skills. In addition, the adult learning centre offers cooking classes. There is also a program where children and

seniors can cook together in another two schools.

Other community assets mentioned included Hear ts and Hands, the Vermilion Food Bank, Santa’s Anonymous Food Hampers, and the Community Christmas Dinner.

Breanne Aylward, graduate research student said, “This study could be used across Canada. By gathering what worked and what didn’t to facilitate our understanding, we could potentially advise other communities in the future.”

Dear Editor Liberty will die if we don’t defend it Recently, I was driving home late in the evening. Further ahead upon a road I was turning onto, the RCMP had a spot check set up. I turned right onto another road. Less than a minute later, two cruisers with lights flashing drove up behind me. After I pulled over, a female officer approached my vehicle, telling me that because I turned onto another road, there was a chance I could be involved in some sort of illegal activity. Then I was promptly sent on my way. Was pulling over a law-abiding, tax-paying citizen on the assumption that I ‘could’ be breaking the law truly necessary? In a society supposedly built upon the principles of liberty and rule of law, it isn’t.

It’s no secret that our roads are full of impaired drivers. Criminals could (there’s

that word again) be transporting illicit weapons and drugs or have an abducted child locked in their trunk. But if police are going to be given carte blanche to search every vehicle on the assumption that each citizen is a potential criminal, then why did we even bother writing a constitution based on our ancient Anglo-Saxon common law rights?

In recent years, I’ve noticed a disturbing trend not only in Canada but throughout the western world, where, as Benjamin Franklin once warned about, people are all too happy to forego essential liberty for temporary security. I have spoken to people that have immigrated to Canada who lived under Communist regimes in Eastern Europe, telling me horror stories about life under these brutal, totalitarian governments. Sadly, too many Canadians are failing to heed the lessons of history

and are more eager to choose socialism over freedom.

Liberty is a precious gift that our forefathers (including my grandfather, a World War II veteran) spilled rivers of blood for in order for you and me to live in a society where strict boundaries are placed around

government authority. Right now, as we speak, liberty is in danger of going the way of the dinosaur, and surely will if we don’t all defend it.

As I write this, farmers are still trying to get their crops off and it is the eve of the federal election 2019. Canadians all across Canada are in anticipation of the outcome. There have been many conversations at farm tables, at coffee shops, at political rallies, in shops, at conferences, at churches and community events. Recently I have had several customers in my shop express their feeling of fear and uncertainty that they have with the current Trudeau government and the state of the country. We have all experienced our province and country change at rapid speed during the NDP and Liberal governments in ways that have not always represented the best

While that is cooking in a separate pot, melt the 2 tablespoons of butter, and sauté the onion and garlic. Drain the macaroni, and add in the onions.

Melt the 1/4 cup butter and then add the flour and cook until bubbly, add the milk slowly, stirring until thicken after each addition. Add the salt and pepper, the parmesan cheese and the grated cheese. If it seems too thick, you an add a little more milk or cream to thin the sauce a little. Add the creamy cheese mix ture to the macaroni and onion mixture and stir until coated. Season to taste. Serve hot.

The Important Paths And Roads Of Early Vermilion

There was a time i n t h e l a t e 19 t h century when Battlefor d wa s o n e of the most important places in Canada.

From 1876 to 1883, Battleford was the territorial capital and most of the roads of the area led to Battleford in one way or another.

For the Vermilion area, three such roads made their way towards Battleford, helping to shape the communities that would spring up.

The oldest Battleford road ran north of the Saskatchewan River and carried most of the freight that ran through the area. Inspector Dickens kept a diary around 1885 and he spoke of the

activity on the trail being quite high. A second trail ran along the telegraph line, before swinging to the south at the Blackfoot Hills. A third trail branched off the trail and headed north-west to the Vermilion River valley, bypassing the Grizzly Bear and Buffalo coulees.

It would eventually reach the Victoria Mission, giving the trail the name of Victoria Trail.

George Atkinson, a freight driver in the area, described the three trails as such. The north trail along the North Saskatchewan was the loaded trail.

The trail along the telegraph trail was called the empty trail since it did not see anywhere near as much freight.

Over the years, the trails would see little in the way of improvements apart from a few small bridges, especially on the north trail that went through vari-

ous low areas. It is not known when the first roadwork actually began in the area, but it is believed to have been on the Vermilion River trail, which what a bridge built north of Islam.

Another important road was the Kitscoty – Mar wayne Road. On Feb. 1, 1906, it was decided that work would commence on this road, since it was the easiest and quickest route through the area to Kitscoty. William Gould was chosen as road commissioner to oversee the work on the road.

Another important road was the Isley Road South. In 1907, Hugh Gilchrist proposed sending a government surveyor to begin building a road on the west side of Kenilworth Lake.

Halloween is a fun time for children. However when combined with costumes, the weather, and darkness, the excitement of the night can pose danger to little ones.

We can’t control the weather or the darkness. But we can do a few things to keep Halloween safe.

Costumes • Ensure footwear and costumes fit properly and provide appropriate protection against weather conditions.

• Ensure costumes aren’t a tripping hazard.

• Add reflective tape to costumes and treat bags. This ensures your child is visible in the dark.

• Choose costumes, beards and wigs labeled “flame-resistant”.

• Choose face paint or make-up

instead of a mask that can interfere with your child’s vision.

• If your child is wearing a mask or a head piece, ensure they can see clearly from the front and both sides, and that it doesn’t interfere with their breathing.

• Never allow your child to carry a sharp or dangerous costume prop, such as a knife or sword.

Trick-or-treating • Children are safest if they trickor-treat in groups. Don’t let them trick-or-treat alone.

• Accompany your child until you feel comfortable that they are old enough to go without parental supervision.

• Remind your child that the same safe road rules apply when trickor-treating as they do any other night. Always walk on sidewalks, and cross the street at cross-

to build bridges over several crossing spots in the area. One of the first bridges to be built in the County of Vermilion River was built in 1906. It would gain the name of Hollington’s Bridge, after A. Hollington, who homesteaders nearby.

Those early roads and bridges would upgrade and change and become the important roadways that keep business and residents moving through the area.

4 Ways To Assess Your Business Performance Using Financial Ratios BDC Submitted

At some point, most businesses require an in-depth look at their financial structure. An expansion projec t, low cash reserves or a jump in expenses can prompt you to conduct such an exercise. You might also opt to examine your financial structure if you find yourself borrowing more frequently as your sales increase, or if, for example, a customer wants to place a large order and is asking for longer-than-normal credit terms.

One way to analyze your financial health and identify how it might be improved is by looking closely at your financial ratios.

Ratios are used to make comparisons between different aspects of a company’s performance or how the company stacks up within a particular industry or region.

They reveal very basic information such as whether you have accumulated too much debt, stockpiled too much inventory or are not collecting receivables fast enough.

A common use of financial ratios is when a lender determines the stability and health of your business by looking at your balance sheet. T he balance sheet provides a portrait of what your company owns or is owed (assets) and what it owes (liabilities).

Bankers will often make financial ratios a part of your business loan agreement. For instance, you may have to keep your equity

above a certain percentage of your debt, or your current assets above a certain percentage of your current liabilities.

But ratios should not be evaluated only when visiting your banker. Ideally, you should review your ratios on a monthly basis to keep on top of changing trends in your company. Although there are different terms for different ratios, they fall into 4 basic categories.

Liquidity ratios These measure the amount of liquidity (cash and easily converted assets) that you have to cover your debts, and provide a broad overview of your financial health.

The current ratio measures your company’s ability to generate cash to meet your short-term financial commitments. Also called the working capital ratio, it is calculated by dividing your current assets—such as cash, inventory and receivables—by your current liabilities, such as line of credit balance, payables and current portion of long-term debts.

The quick ratio measures your ability to access cash quickly to support immediate demands. Also known as the acid test, the quick ratio divides current assets (excluding inventory) by current liabilities (excluding current portion of long-term debts). A ratio of 1.0 or greater is generally acceptable, but this can vary depending on your industry.

A comparatively low ratio can mean that your company might have difficulty meeting your obligations and may not be able to take advantage of opportunities that require quick cash. Paying off your liabilities can improve this ratio; you may want to delay purchases or consider long-term borrowing to repay short-term debt. You may also want to review your credit policies with clients and possibly adjust them to collect receivables more quickly.

A higher ratio may mean that your capital is being underutilized and could prompt you to invest more of your capital in projects that drive growth, such as innovation, product or service development, R&D or international marketing.

But what constitutes a healthy ratio varies from industry to industry. For example, a clothing store will have goods that quickly lose value because of changing fashion trends. Still, these goods are easily liquidated and have high turnover. As a result, small amounts of money continuously come in and go out, and in a worstcase scenario liquidation is relatively simple. This company could easily function with a current ratio close to 1.0.

On the other hand, an airplane manufacturer has high-value, non-perishable assets such as work-in-progress inventory, as well as extended receivable terms. Businesses like these need carefully planned payment

terms with customers; the current ratio should be much higher to allow for coverage of short-term liabilities.

Efficiency ratios Of ten measured over a 3- to 5-year period, these give additional insight into areas of your business such as collections, cash flow and operational results.

Inventory turnover looks at how long it takes for inventory to be sold and replaced during the year. It is calculated by dividing total purchases by average inventory in a given period. For most inventory-reliant companies, this can be a make-or-break factor for success. After all, the longer the inventory sits on your shelves, the more it costs.

Assessing your inventory turnover is important because gross profit is earned each time such turnover occurs. This ratio can enable you to see where you might improve your buying practices and inventory management. For example, you could analyze your purchasing patterns as well as your clients to determine ways to minimize the amount of inventory on hand. You might want to turn some of the obsolete inventory into cash by selling it off at a discount to specific clients. This ratio can also help you see if your levels are too low and you’re missing out on sales opportunities.

It is calculated by dividing inventory by total current assets. In general, the lower the ratio, the better. Improving this ratio will allow you to invest more working capital in growth-driven projects such as export development, R&D and marketing.

Evaluating inventory ratios depends a great deal on your industry and the quality of your inventory. Ask yourself: Are your goods seasonal (such as ski equipment), perishable (food) or prone to becoming obsolete (fashion)?

Depending on the answer, these ratios will vary a great deal. Still, regardless of the industry, inventory ratios can you help you improve your business efficiency.

Average collection period looks at the average number of days customers take to pay for your products or services. It is calculated by dividing receivables by total sales and multiplying by 365. To improve how quickly you collect payments, you may want to establish clearer credit policies and set collection procedures.

For example, to encourage your clients to pay on time, you can give them incentives or discounts. You should also compare your policies to those of your industry to ensure you remain competitive.

Profitability ratios These ratios are used not only to evaluate the financial viability of your business, but are essential in comparing your business to others in your industry. You can also look for trends in your company by comparing the ratios over a certain number of years.

Net profit margin measures how much a company earns (usually after taxes) relative to

its sales. A company with a higher profit margin than its competitor is usually more efficient, flexible and able to take on new opportunities.

Operating profit margin, also known as coverage ratio, measures earnings before interest and taxes. The results can be quite different from the net profit margin due to the impact of interest and tax expenses. By analyzing this margin, you can better assess your ability to expand your business through additional debt or other investments.

Return on assets (ROA) ratio tells how well management is utilizing the company’s various resources (assets). It is calculated by dividing net profit (before taxes) by total assets. The number will vary widely across different industries. Capital-intensive industries such as railways will yield a low return on assets, since they need expensive infrastructure to do business.

Service-based operations such as consulting firms will have a high ROA, as they require minimal hard assets to operate.

Return on equity (ROE) measures how well the business is doing in relation to the investment made by its shareholders. It tells the shareholders how much the company is earning for each of their invested dollars. It is calculated by dividing a company’s earnings after taxes (EAT) by the total shareholders’ equity, and multiplying the result by 100%.

A common analysis tool for profitability ratios is cross-sectional analysis, which compares ratios of several companies from the same industry. For instance, your business may have experienced a downturn in its net profit margin of 10% over the last 3 years, which may seem worrying. However, if your competitors have experienced an average downturn of 21%, your business is performing relatively well.

Nonetheless, you will still need to analyze the underlying data to establish the cause of the downturn and create solutions for improvement.

Leverage ratios These ratios provide an indication of the long-term solvency of a company and to what extent you are using long-term debt to support your business.

Debt-to-equity and debt-to-asset ratios are used by bankers to see how your assets are financed, whether it comes from creditors or your own investments, for example. In general, a bank will consider a lower ratio to be a good indicator of your ability to repay your debts or take on additional debt to support new opportunities.

Accessing and calculating ratios To determine your ratios, you can use a variety of online tools such as BDC’s ratio calculators, although your financial advisor, accountant and banker may already have the most currently used ratios on hand.

For a fee, industry-standard data is available from a variety of sources, both printed and online, including Dun & Bradstreet’s Industry

Norms and Key Business Ratios, RMA’s Annual Statement Studies and Statistics Canada (search for Financial Performance Indicators for Canadian Business). Industry Canada’s SME Benchmarking Tool offers basic financial ratios by industry, based on Statistics Canada small business profiles.

Interpreting your ratios Ratios will vary from industry to industry and over time. Interpreting them requires knowledge of your business, your industry and the reasons for fluctuations. Beyond the numbers It’s important to keep in mind that ratios are only one way to determine your financial performance. Beyond what industry a company is in, location can also be important.

Regional differences in factors such as labor or shipping costs may also affect the result and the significance of a ratio. Sound financial analysis always entails closely examining the data used to establish the ratios as well as assessing the circumstances that generated the results.

HOW TO BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR: Do You Have What It Takes?

“The notion of challenge is an important one for entrepreneurs. They often have a strong need to set objectives and achieve specific goals. They will naturally take measures to meet these goals and will want rapid feedback on their achievements,” he believes.

“Could I do it on my own out there?” is a question that many of us have asked ourselves in the course of our careers.

The answer to that question may be tied to whether or not we have a specific set of aptitudes and motivators that make us potential entrepreneurs, says Yvon Gasse, Professor and Director of the SME and Entrepreneurship Centre at Laval University. Gasse collaborated with BDC to develop the Entrepreneurial Self-Assessment Tool which helps people better measure their entrepreneurial potential.

“Although many factors come into play such as your personal circumstances and timing, research does show that business owners often share certain qualities that make up the entrepreneurial mindset,” he emphasizes.

Key motivators For example, Gasse points to 3 “motivating factors”, among others, that attract people to the idea of becoming entrepreneurs in the first place.

1. Need for achievement

2. Need to influence “Often entrepreneurial types want to influence people and the course of events. Making money may be one motivator but ultimately entrepreneurs want to make an impact on people through their businesses. They may also want to shape the course of events by, for example, buying another company or moving their business to China.”

3. Autonomy “Another motivator at the root of entrepreneurship is the desire to be independent,” says Gasse. “You want to be your own boss and feel in control of your destiny. Independence is a strong driver

for people who want to set up their own businesses and pursue their dreams.”

4. Some key aptitudes that shape entrepreneurs Along with these motivating factors, Gasse contends that entrepreneurs also have specific aptitudes that make them more likely candidates to set up their own businesses.

Among these are: 1. Perseverance “Business owners are usually determined to get past obstacles and see a project through its completion despite setbacks.

They will overcome their frustrations and problems and persevere,” says Gasse.

“Given the challenges of today’s complex business environment, this aptitude is at the top of the list.”

2. Self-assurance “Entrepreneurs show self-confidence and trust their instincts. This self-assurance

3. Creativity Another aptitude that Gasse emphasizes is creativity. “This is particularly true when it comes to the ability of an entrepreneur to creatively identify business opportunities. Entrepreneurs instinctively see gaps in the market and can find unique products and services that meet a demand,” he emphasizes.

4. Tolerance for ambiguity “Entrepreneurs are comfortable with ambiguity, and capable of making decisions even when they don’t have all the information they need. For example, you might be selling products or services in a relatively unknown market. This level of uncertainty can be very stressful for most people but entrepreneurs learn how to work around it,” he believes.

5. Attitude toward failure “Many business owners have a long history of failures and accept these as part of the learning experience,” says Gasse.

“Rather than view failure as a catastrophe, an entrepreneur will learn from his or her mistakes and what to avoid the next time around. They’ll pick themselves up after a failure and start over.”

That strong desire to tackle their objectives and see quick results often characterizes people who want to run their own companies.”

Before you get going If you see that you have the necessary motivators and aptitudes to become an entrepreneur, Gasse recommends that you first get a clear business plan in place. “It’s important to not think of your business plan as simply a way to attract financing. It’s much broader than that. Ideally, a business plan is a real roadmap that shows where you are going with your company. It should demonstrate that you’ve done your homework, understand your market and that you can actually generate business. Once you have that plan in place, you can move more confidently ahead.”

Check Your Dugouts This Fall

To ensure farmyard dugouts remain viable water sources, producers should inspect them regularly.

“The fall inspection should start with a check of the area that feeds into the dugout,” says Dan Benson, water specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

“Make sure this area is free of debris that might flow into your dugout. This area should be mowed and kept clear of trees and weeds. A properly graded, mowed grassed waterway is an excellent best management practice that can reduce turbidity and nutrient-rich water from entering your dugout. Not only will it improve your water quality, it will extend the life of your dugout.”

“A well maintained dugout perimeter gives you greater access so that you can regularly visually inspect the dugout itself. It might also deter native animals, such as muskrats, from feeling at home in your dugout. Tree growth should be also be discouraged near dugouts.”

He adds that leaves falling off deciduous trees will add nutrients to the dugout,

and that will contribute to poor water quality. Deciduous trees should be kept back 165 ft (50 m) and conifers should be no closer than 65 ft (20 m).

If the dugout has an inlet structure such as a gated culvert, Benson says that it should be inspected to confirm that it operates correctly.

“If you don’t have a method of controlling the flow of water into your dugout, you might want to consider adding this feature. The ability to choose what water enters your dugout is an important management tool that will improve your water quality and the lifespan of your dugout.”

He suggests these next steps: Inspect the aeration system. It introd u c e s ox yg e n i nto t h e water a n d enhances the natural biological activity in the dugout.

Confirm that the pump is working, and remove the aeration line by pulling it to shore.

Once on shore, check the soundness of the line and the check-valve.

Inspect the diffuser to make sure that it is working correctly. If not, clean it or replace it. Install a diffuser if one is not

being used.

Check that the diffuser is located on or near - the bottom of the dugout.

“Research has shown that year-round continuous aeration with a diffuser located on the bottom of the dugout provides the best water quality,” he says.

Amber lights are a warning to motorists following or approaching a bus that they are slowing down to make a passenger stop. Passing a school bus puts children at risk. Together we can continue to make the school bus the safest means of student transportation.

If you see someone pass a school bus with its red lights flashing, please call your local RCMP to report them, it is a $543 fine and 6 demerit points. Some of our contracted school buses are equipped with video cameras on the outside of their buses to catch violators. The Provincial School Bus Safety Slogan for the Red Flashing Light Awareness Campaign is “REDS FLASHING…NO PASSING!” The campaign’s goal is to reduce the number of school bus fly-by’s. Marauder Score 8 TDs But Lose To Edson 84-51

Vermilion Marauders ended their 2019 regular season with a classic 6-man football high scoring game in Edson last week.

They’ll meet the Rebels again this week in the 1 vs 4 playoff game. If the teams score a combined 135 points again, the rematch will be exciting.

Kick returns provided the most electricity. The Marauders returned two for touchdowns. The third quarter even featured back-to-back kick return TDs. Having a full roster will help the Marauders stay close. Marauders scored 30 of their 51 points in the second half without Landyn Herzog, arguably their most valuable player. But, by the end of the game players were filling in at positions they hadn’t played previously. That included quarterback Tylin Vold in on defense in the final quarter.

Early in the game, the Marauders kept pace with the Rebels tying them at 8 in the first quarter and 14 in the second, and trailed by just 10 until Ryhker Lamabe, Mr Everything for the Rebels, scored his fourth touchdown of the half with 17.2 seconds left.

Lamabe scored another four majors in the second half plus kicked two-point converts. His roles included quarterback, running back, receiver and kick returner. He also played on the defensive side of the ball.

The Rebels only scored three more majors than the Marauders but were nearly perfect on their converts only missing once. On the other hand, the Marauders converted only two of their eight touchdowns. In total Edson tallied 17 more points from converts.

Riley Cronin was good on his first convert attempt tying the game at 6:15 of the first quarter. Vermilion scored on their first possession with a Landyn

Herzog reception accounting for most of the yards. The 27-yard pass was Tylin Vold’s first pass of the game. Vold eventually scored on a 19-yard keeper.

Zac Bodie returned a Rebel kickoff 85 yards for the second Marauder score, tying the game at 14.

Then came five consecutive majors

by Ryland Fougere. His first TD came from a two-play scoring drive from the Edson 47. On the first play Fougere reversed direction when he saw all the lanes were blocked on the left side of the field and went right. A great block from Vold got Fougere to the 11. The next play, Vold connected with him on a swing pass and Fougere fought his way into the endzone keeping his legs moving with Rebel tacklers on his back.

Fougere scored his second major on the Marauders first possession of the second half. Logan McNabb fell on the short kick. After a gain of less than two, Fougere pivoted through blocks to the five yard line. On third and two, he powered into the endzone.

His third major was another long run from his own 45 to the endzone. Austin Bodurka grabbed the short kick; it was one of at least four he recovered. On the first play Fougere replicated reversing directions and evading tacklers all the way down the field and across the goaline.

His fourth TD came on the last play of the third quarter. Bodie returned a kickoff to the Edson 25. Vold carried to the 16, then Fougere turned a broken play into a touchdown after the siren sounded.

Edson was up 68-38 when Fougere returned the nex t kickof f for a touchdown. Cronin scrambled into the endzone for a single giving the Marauders 45 points.

The Marauders final touchdown came just over a minute later. Bodie, playing in his final regular season high school

game, returned the ball to the Edson 29. On the next play, Steven Bodurka capped his final game by catching a Vold pass for the major.

Points after: The Rebels short kicked every kickoff, but the Marauders claimed every one of them, returning two for touchdowns. Bodie and Austin Bodurka had the good hands claiming most of the balls…Early in the game the Marauders were thrown off by Lamabe’s cadence and were called offside three times in the first quarter. The Rebels had trouble with the blocking from rear concept and were tagged three times in a single series…Herzog didn’t play the final half.

He took hard blows just above the belt including a kick to the stomach…With

Herzog out and other Marauders hurting many players took turns filling unfamiliar positions including Vold playing defence.

“Just don’t get hurt,” coach Lorne Maier counselled. The Marauders didn’t have a back up QB…Skylar Dary provided the best hockey body check as football tackle as well as racking up the most tackles by any Marauder in the game.
