St. Jerome’s School hosted their annual Awards Night, recognizing student achievement on October 11. Grades 9 12 received a selection of awards for academic achievement in a range of subjects as well as athletic achievement, religion, and citizenship. Many local businesses sponsored the event, and many families came to support the recipients.

Islay Hosts World Renowned Fiddler

Immense talent filled the Islay Hall as the Islay Community Association hosted Calvin Vollrath, internationally acclaimed fiddler, on October 10.

Approximately 160 people attended and the show also featured Jeremy Rusu from Winnepeg, and Calvin’s wife, step-dancer Rhea Labrie.

Though Rusu was born blind, he can play any instrument he touches. Keeping 95 instruments at home and operating his own recording studio, Rusu entertained the crowd by harmonizing perfectly with Vollrath on a variety of instruments, as well as played his own written piano song, called, ‘Intention.’

The audience thought it was remarkable, and went on to enjoy a Red River Jig and a Reel, performed by Labrie. Applause also filled the room for the energy and control

put forth in her dance.

Vollrath connected with the audience as an area resident from St. Paul who grew up on old time music and learning to play by ear as his father was a fiddle player.

“Inspired by a lot of different music, I have composed approximately 700 songs and made 69 albums,” said Vollrath.

With his new album, ‘The Gift,’ The Gift Tour began in Sherbrook, Quebec on September 9, and the last night of the tour was held in Islay.

“I thought that I had played everywhere; now I can say that I have,” joked Vollrath.

“Calvin is a two-time North American Champion who has toured Europe and North America performing, as well as giving lessons and lectures,” said Bruce Gould, Islay Community Association member.

He played several originals, a Canadian Military March, Schottische, ho-down, and a waltz. He also played a few covers for a fox

trot, and Don Messer classics. The sweet melodies led the audience to tap their toes along and they even shared bursts of laughter and whistles.

The Vermilion Public Library was full of excitement during the first session of Let’s Go Lego on October 11.

Children from the area were given the theme, ‘bridges’, and had the opportunity to create different things with the Lego pieces provided.

“Children are building the most fantastic things!” said Programs Coordinator Sheila Heit.

“Lego is a stem activity. It incorporates science and technology, and is a way for various age groups to interact. We would

Banana Spice Cake

The luxurious s pi c es of c inamon, ginger and all spice are per fec t for fall.

This cake is a delicious way to use up a few over ripe bananas with that great fall flavour. You can ser ve it with a cream cheese icing, or with whipped cream and fresh sliced bananas.

When you do your own baking, your cake is filled with real food ingredients, instead the unsafe safe fats and excess sugar often found in commercial baked goods. When you use real butter, you can taste it in the results.

The lemon juice is important to react with the baking soda, although if you

leave it out, the cake will still turn out well, if will just not raise up quite as much. All of the spices have health benefits. Cinnamon and ginger both help to control blood sugar in a positive way, and the best type is Ceylon cinnamon. Ginger is anti-inflammator y, and allspice has been shown in a study published in the journal, carcinogenesis to help prevent prost ate c a n c er d u e to t h e c o m p o u n d ericifilin that it contains. It is interesting to note that allspice is also called Jamaican pepper.

A banana and a dairy product are a good combination to eat together for increased protection from ulcers and increased calcium absorption.

Banana Spice Cake 1 1/2 cups milk 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice 3 ripe bananas mashed 1/2 cup butter – room temperature 3/4 cup sugar 3 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 1/2 cups flour 2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoons baking powder 1 tablespoons cinnamon 2 teaspoons ginger 1/2 teaspoon allspice.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Grease an 9 x 13 inch baking pan. In

a small bowl combine the light cream and 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice, stir and set aside. In another bowl mash the 3 bananas, or enough to be 1 cup. Combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder and spices in a separate bowl and stir.

In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter, then add the sugar and beat until mixed. Add the eggs and beat the mixture until creamy, beat in the vanilla. Stir in alternately the milk and flour mixture until just blended, Fold in the bananas. Bake for 40 minutes, or until a tooth pick comes out clean.

I applaud you for putting to words, many of our thoughts. All levels of government seem to be transfixed by “climate change hysteria”. You have described prairie weather patterns precisely. However, the fact of this latest “emergency” is that government now has a new basis to levy and increase tax. Carbon tax or Cost of

pollution or whatever they wish to label it. And they are even able to maneuver farmers into the villain seat.

Please continue to share your views from the perspective when life made sense and we the people made choices not the government dictating and interfering in our lives.

Once again, I have decided to dive down the rabbit hole of the life of an early settler to the region and this week that settler is Charlie DeFord.

Charlie DeFord and his family would make their way to Canada in 1901, spending some time living at Fort Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan before deciding to file a homestead northeast of Vermilion. Charlie was joined by his parents Mary and George, as well as his brothers Sanford, Milton and Frank, all filing on land near each other.

In 1913, Charlie would marry Norah McClain, and their first child would be born on Jan. 11, 1914, with Violet arriving on Jan. 24, 1916.

The times were good for Charlie and his family but unfortunately there was also tragedy. Claude DeFord, an uncle of Charlie, was only 15 when he froze

to death outside in 1915. He had been hunting with neighbours and was left alone at camp. He decided to go out on his own and got lost. When he realized he was lost, he ran trying to find the camp until he collapsed from exhaustion. His clothing and gun were found on the trail by searchers, and eventually his body was found as well.

When the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic hit, Norah would travel throughout the area nursing people back to health.

Several members of the family got sick, but they all recovered over time.

Eventually, Charlie and his family moved to Vermilion and the children started school. Charlie worked as an auctioneer, butcher and barber but never seemed to find much success at any of them. The family would then move back to the family farm.

In 1921, the children were attending Morrison school when they all contracted mumps. Norah also had the mumps and they became so bad the doctor was worried she would strangle

to death.

In 1923, the family moved to the Bowtell district and the children began to attend Bowtell school.

The family worked hard on their property and even when there were hard times, they always had lots to eat thanks to the excellent gardens on the property.

The family would often feed the railroad transients who came through the area.

Many of those homeless men would split wood for the family as a thank you for the meal.

Norah would pass away in February of 1945, while Charlie would die in April of 1957.

Breast Cancer Screening

Breast Cancer Screening Awareness Month is ever y O ctober, and women are reminded to get checked for breast cancer.

Breast cancer is still a problem in Alberta and the most common type of cancer for women. In fact, one out of every eight women will be diagnosed in her lifetime. And each day a woman in Alberta will die from the disease.

But breast cancer doesn’t have to be a death sentence. If we can catch it early, we can treat it and beat it.

Screening mammograms are a way

to do just that. Using special x-rays of the breast that check for signs can help find breast cancer two to three years before it can be felt by a woman or her doctor. Mammograms are the best test we have for breast cancer, and the only test that has been shown to lower the chance of dying by 30 per cent. Thanks in part to screening mammograms, most women (almost 90 per cent) are now surviving breast cancer.

Women ages 50 to 74 should plan to have a mammogram once every two years, and can self-refer. Women in

their 40s can speak to their doctor, and get a referral for their first screening mammogram.

Screening mammograms are available at many clinics in Alberta. To find the closest screening mammography centre near you, call Health Link at 811 or Screening Programs at 1-866727-3926.

Screen Test is a service that brings free screening mammograms to rural communities with two mobile clinics.

What else can you do to prevent

breast cancer? You can talk to your doctor about your family histor y of breast cancer and know your risk.

Know how your breasts normally look and feel, and get them checked if you find anything unusual. And of course a healthy lifestyle is important. Limiting alcohol and smoking can also help lower your risk.

Prevention is the best protection. A screening mammogram can save your life. Get a screening mammogram in October.

The Marauders held on to that lead for just over two and half minutes and were tied for another four until the league-leading Wolfpack forced a safety touch.

Vermilion had shutdown Hinton on the seven for the only time the Marauders took over on downs in the game. Markus Goodwin brought down Vold on the first play for the rouge. Then, after taking the ball on their own 35, the Wolfpack scored with 52.9 seconds left in the first quarter.

The second quarter belonged the Wolfpack whose roster was double plus one of the 11 Marauders. Add in extra inches, extra pounds and more experience making the result four more Wolfpack touchdowns and a 40-6 lead at halftime.

Regrouped, but down to nine players from two injuries, the Marauders held the Wolfpack to a single major in the third quarter and scored one of their own.

The Marauders touchdown drive started on their own 25 and was aided by an unnecessary roughness call when Zac Bodie was leveled by a head tackle. Two plays earlier the officials missed blatant pass interference. Bodie was helped off the field and the Marauders moved up to the Hinton 41.

Vold scampered 20 yards, then Skylar Dary went up the middle for another 13. A loss of two was followed by an incomplete pass. Then Vold found a hole and scored the major. Riley Cronin provided the twopoint kicked convert.

Hinton scored just seven seconds into the final quarter. There was no more scoring until the final minute. Cronin’s rushed punt was touched by two Hinton players who were tagged for no yards That gave the Marauders a first down just outside the 10.

A horse collar tackle brought the ball to the one. Vold connected with a reaching Herzog, but he lost the ball as he hit the ground. Vold still in the shotgun position, handed off to Steven Bodurka who was tossed down on the 6 making it third and goal. Vold called his own number and scrambled across the goal line with 42.9 seconds on the clock.

After the kick-off, Hinton elected not to go the sportsmanship route by taking a knee. Instead they scored as the buzzer sounded. Final score, 59-20.

Points after: Playing on the artificial turf at the Fuhr Sports Centre was a first for many Marauders…The first half took two extra plays to end. First one team and then the other were offside. The Hinton offside prevented a touchdown, but they couldn’t repeat reaching the endzone…

A four-person officiating crew, even on the narrower field, still leaves a lot of blind spots. The Marauders should have benefited from several more penalties, especially more than one pass interference call…After the Hinton third quarter touchdown, the clock went to straight time…Ryland Fougere’s third pass recep-

J.R. Robson – Author Visit

J.R. Robson School hosted author, Natasha Deen, on October 2.

“I am a professional writer and I find writing really hard. I wrestle for an idea; mix up letters, numbers and sounds. Writing for me is frustrating and difficult but I love it because I love stories,” said Deen.

Spending several years in Guyana, South America growing up, Deen remembers it as a place with coconut trees, mangos, anacondas, piranhas, parrots, monkeys, and sharks. Even though Guyana is the only English speaking country in South America, many Canadians were unfamiliar and grew confused thinking she was either from Ghana (Africa) or Guinea (Africa). She also noted the confusion that came when helping people decipher a dialect of Guyanese Creole.

Deen was actually born in Canada, but moved to Guyana at a young age and to Canada again during her childhood to avoid harsh government.

Growing up, Deen said she was taught the Guyanese

way; that ‘everything can be solved with a cup of tea,’ and amid her struggles to fit in, communicating with people and making friends, she was often served one.

“People thought I slurred because Guyanese Creole leaves off the end of some words or adds the beginning of others. People had to make the choice to leave with nothing due to the government. As a result, I didn’t dress the same as other children because we didn’t have money for brand name clothing, or toys, or food,” said Deen.

She shared about items her parents also desired such as a barbeque and cookware coloured in amber and pink glass.

“Caribbean people; we love colour!” said Deen.

According to teacher, Nicole Polishuk, students found the author’s visit very interesting. “They really liked her stories about how she assimilated into the ‘Canadian’ culture. It opened their eyes a bit on how uprooting your life and moving to a new country can have some major challenges but also some big Author Natasha Deen at J.R. The Vermilion Wellness Coalition hosted a Building A Bird Feeder session at the Vermilion Provincial Park on October 11.

“We had a great turnout; approximately 60 people, said volunteer Gary Walsh.

Walsh discussed survival needs with children, as well as migration and different diets for different bird species.

We feed birds because we love listening to them and seeing them. Birds are like a time clock for me; the geese coming and going, and the robins and meadowlarks in the spring. They create memories people will never forget, and they keep the bugs down,” said Walsh.

Children had the opportunity to fill a homemade birdfeeder with suet and birdseed. Many enjoyed learning and socialising during the activity.

Time to prepare your car for winter Whether you like it or not, October is here, harkening the return of Old Man Winter as the trees get bare and the days ever shorter. Yes, this means once again having to prepare your car or light truck for the cold season.

Luckily for us, today’s vehicles are better built than ever. They are also much more reliable. Unluckily for us, that is exactly why few motorists really take the time to properly maintain their cars and trucks. In the best cases, owners simply drop the vehicle off at the garage and let the staff there prepare the car for winter. In the worst cases, owners just ignore the whole issue until a little red warning light starts blinking on the dashboard controls.

Not everybody owns a late model car or has the means to entrust their

vehicle to a dealer. That is where your local mechanic will be able to help you out by verifying all the fluids in the vehicle, checking some of the mechanical and electrical points that need to be serviced, and installing winter tires.

More and more Canadian drivers are getting the picture that winter tires are a necessity for cold-weather driving.

A car owner can also do his or her own part in preparing their vehicle by washing and preparing the body with a good wax job and putting a little oil on some body parts here and there.

Those who plan to keep their vehicle for the long haul will have its underbody and structure treated with a rust inhibitor. Don’t doubt it for a second: caring for your vehicle before winter is the best way to make it last.

Mannville Fire Department – Pancake Breakfast

The Mannville Fire Department held their annual Pancake Break fast on October 12. Approximately 120 people attended the event and enjoyed the opportunity to participate in Fire Prevention Week and support Muscular Dystro-

phy.

“As a new chief it’s a great way to engage with the community. It’s a great way to meet people and let people get to know my face. Mannville is small, so everything seems kind of personal. It is also a good team-building exercise for us with everyone helping out and it is for a

good cause,” said Mannville Fire Chief Trevor Gillis.

According to Gillis, village councillors and County Fire Chief Mike Fundytus attended the event. Children had the opportunity to see the fire trucks and colour activity books. Others viewed emergency social services volunteer

information provided by the Village of Mannville’s Emergency Management team. They offered reading material for people to create awarenesss and encourage people to be prepared in the event of an emergency. Should a community emergency occur, they are prepared to organize a reception centre.

Lakeland College Pool in Vermilion has completed the majority of their renovations and reopened on October 7. There are a few finishing touches that will continue including tiling in November.

According to Athletic Director, Alan Rogan, new ceiling grid and t-bar lines the halls and changing rooms as well as all new LED lights were installed. The elec-

trical was completed last year, and new plumbing with motion sensors and automatic flush will avoid future leaks. Radiated heat panels will be added in the change rooms and a new heating ventilation has been installed on the roof. The multipurpose room also received renovations.

“Normally we shut down in December, but this year opted for September to avoid the cold while working on the roof; we will be open then instead,” said Rogan.

Hearts and Hands Coordinator, Betty Thomas said, “We are extremely grateful for the food and cash donations of just over $300. It was an overwhelming success! The individual staff members were extremely

supportive and there is such a nice variety of goods.”

Eight or nine large boxes filled and bargain Shop Manager, Cathy noted that the food drive had doubled from last year.

“I am extremely thankful to the people here; their giving hearts are amazing. We wanted to extend our hands to the community and their generosity will go on to benefit the community,” said Cathy.

Submitted On October 9, United Sport & Cycle delivered three trailers of sport equipment to Sport Central in Edmonton.

From September 25 - October 6, United Sport & Cycle asked Albertans to bring in their donations of gently-used sport equipment to two of their locations and Albertans responded!

On October 9, members of the media attended Sport Central headquarters to tour the facility finding out more about their work and their increased need for sport equipment in 2019. United Sport & Cycle works year-round as a donation drop-off location for Sport Central.

Every day, the volunteers at Sport Central receive, repair, recycle, and redistribute gently-used equipment, with the goal of providing it to children ages 4 -17 whose families are not able to afford it. Thanks to the generosity of Albertans, Sport Central helped over 9,000 children in need within the last year.

While donations have been steady, the demand has been even greater. Donations can continue to be dropped off at either of United Sport & Cycle’s two stores (yearround)!

Bullies Never Win

Safety Council’s message is simple: there can be no tolerance for bullying.

Whether you’re a student, an educator, a parent or a caregiver, we all have a duty to keep children safe.

According to the Promoting Relationships & Eliminating Violence Network (PREVNet), a network of researchers and organizations shedding a light on bullying prevention, 75 per cent of people say they have been affected by bullying. This can take shape either as a victim, a bystander or an aggressor, and includes three primary forms of bullying: • Physical bullying, which can take the form of hitting, destruction of property and physical humiliation; • Verbal bullying, which can include teasing, threats and name-calling; and • Social bullying, which can include rumours, gossip and exclusion with the intent of lowering the victim’s social worth among their peers.

Additionally, the role that technology plays in day-to-day life has contributed to the rise of cyber-bullying. This means that victims aren’t easily able to escape

PREVNet reports that one in five teenagers report being victimized electronically, a number which has been steadily on the rise since the Internet and smartphones became ubiquitous.

Be on the lookout for signs of your child being bullied. These are numerous and varied, but can include: heightened anxiet y, low self- esteem and excessive self-deprecation, low performance in school, visible injuries, irritability, unhappiness, withdrawal from activities they once enjoyed, isolation and fear of going to school.

Conversely, you should also look for signs that your child may be a bully.

These signs can include: aggression, manipulative behavior, unexplained money or items and a minimal concern for others’ feelings.

Your role in the bullying discussion is simple, yet crucial, and begins long before your child is put in a situation where bullying may arise. Open a conversation with your child and make

If your child tells you that they are being bullied, document the bullying as best as you can. Keep text messages, emails and any other examples that demonstrate the inappropriate behavior. Report the bullying to the proper authorities - either school administrators or police, depending on the severity. Monitor progress in managing to the desired change and be vigilant in follow-up to ensure that the bully behavior stops.

SCHOOL NEWS Anna Svenungard Submitted

St. Jerome’s students and staff reflected on all of our blessings as the Thanksgiving long weekend approached. Grade Two students in Mrs. Lysons’ class created “Turkey’s in Disguise” and wrote about why they shouldn’t be eaten! Mrs. Martin and Mrs. McCormack’s Grade Threes brought the story of “Stone Soup” to life after completing a book study on it. The result was a delicious Thanksgiving lunch shared amongst friends. Ms. Svenungard’s Grade Ones were invited to Thanksgiving Brunch hosted by Mrs. Despin and her Grade Four class. The classroom was decorated, there were fall coloured table cloths, and each table was adorned with a beautiful fall centrepiece. Overall, Spartans are blessed with a wonderful school community.

Our cross country running team was very successful on October 10 at the NEASSA Zones held at Ross Lake Provincial Park.

They won the 1A Northeast Zones Banner and Sean Ulrich, Jayden Heinrich, Kyden Molsberry, and Anna Willis (who finished second in her race) all qualified to compete at Provincials on October 19. Way to run Spartans!

School will be a splash for our elementary students as we take turns attending

swim lessons in Vermilion. The first eightweek session, starting this week, includes children in the Grade 2, 2/3, and 5 classes.

The Faith in Action Team along with FCC hosted a food bank drive last week. Grade 4-12 students that donated received House points for various food items brought in, with an emphasis placed on breakfast and lunch items. It was a very close race with Mackenzie winning by 20 points, Fraser came in second, and Cartier third. Thank you to everyone for their generous donations.

school Mass will be held on October 24 at 10:30am. Parents, family, and community members are welcome to attend. Halloween Information: Grade 1-5 students will not dress up in their costumes until after lunch on October 31. Parents are invited to come and help their child get into costume after the lunch recess ends at 12:30pm. All elementary students will gather in the gym for our Annual Halloween Costume Parade at 1pm, with individual classrooms hosting class parties to follow. We also have a Family Night where you can come shop until 8:00 pm on Thursday. If parents join their child at the book fair that night, you can complete an event draw ballot to win $50 in books $25 for your family plus $25 for your child’s classroom. Creative Kids Club is a lunch hour club at VES this year. It offers students the opportunity to try different ways of expressing themselves through the arts - photography, seasonal crafts, painting, flower baskets, crocheting, knitting, and macrame. There is no end to the things we can try together (and with over 60 participants, we’ll need to find a lot of projects). This is a fantastic way for staff and community members to connect and share their interests with students. In September, the Kids Club got to choose from five different fall crafts that Mrs. Myshaniuk, Mrs. MacMillan, Ms. Birch, Mrs. Tupper and Mrs. Joa led.

Innisfree-Minburn 4H Beef Club Report

The Innisfree-Minburn 4H Beef Club held its reorganizational meeting at the Innisfree Millennium Building on Wednesday, October 2. We are excited to welcome two new members; Rylan Jackson and Ainsley Bader. We also have two former members that came back for this year; Morley Bader and Chase Forsyth. Our

meetings happen on the first Wednesday of every month at 7p.m. alternating between Innisfree and Minburn.

This year we have a few members doing a special project; Pheasants. We are having a tire and electronics fundraiser so if you have old tires or electronics please contact Clint McLaughlin at 780-870-2435 or you can contact any other member and we will have them

picked up.

Courtney Cannan is our Club President, Dylan Cannan is our Vice President, Madeline Nott is our Secretary, Carson Kassian is our Treasurer, Brad McLaughlin is our Club Reporter, Owen Harder is our Historian, Tyson Rudolf is our Parliamentarian and our two District Representatives are Camille Kassian and Alex Nott.

Our club has five leaders this year; Clint McLaughlin, Blair Jackson, Tracy Rudolf, Tawnya Coplan and Shelly Nott.

Our weigh-in for the 4H calves is going to be held at Harder’s farm on November 3 at 1p.m.

The next meeting is in the Minburn Curling Rink on November 6, 2019, which is National 4H. Show Your Colours Day!

Vermilion Play Development Goes On A Field Trip

On October 8 and 9, the Vermilion Play Development went to visit the Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre. Upon arrival, Don Keenan greeted them and then introduced some of his students which assisted on the field trip. The children were given a tour of the school and even got to walk through the Helmet Hallway! Don taught them about fire safety and the importance of making a fire plan with their parents. The children were then given an opportunity to dress in fire gear, spray the fire hose and ride in a real fire truck!! The children were excited about their experience and showered Don with hugs and gave high fives to all his students. We feel honoured to be involved with Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre.
