Richardson Pioneer – Fire Donation

Richardson’s Pioneer in Vermilion donated $55,000 to the Vermilion Fire & Rescue Society on September 26.

The donation was made possible through a Richardson Foundation grant, and as a result the Vermilion Fire Department (VFD) purchased a side-by-side and is awaiting the arrival of a new skid and trailer in a couple of weeks. They will be used for fire and rescue calls as well as for wild land fires both surrounding Vermilion, throughout the county, and possibly further away.

Firefighter Kevin Martin pointed out that the trailer will be equipped with a generator, heat, cots, extra clothing and food provisions and will act as a command centre.

Noting that rest and rehabilitation is sometimes required with weather and duration of calls, Lieutenant Travis Warman added, “We did a search and rescue last year that drug out 38 hours.”

Manager of Richardson Pioneer in Vermilion was thrilled to be able to offer the support and said, “The Richardson Foundation is very supportive of fire departments and the communities that we live and work in. In general, this donation will help to create more capacity for our local fire department to service our community and how they can respond to certain calls. As a rural community, we rely heavily on our local Fire & Rescue team to support us during emergency situations. We feel that putting these specialized tools into the hands of our local Fire & Rescue Department is a meaningful contribution to the community, our staff, and customers that are working and living in the rural Vermilion area.”

“On behalf of the Town of Vermilion, we certainly appreciate what Richardson has done for us. This will certainly enhance their ability to protect people and property,” said Deputy Mayor, Robert Pulyk.

County Reeve, Dale Swyripa, went on to

thank Richardson Pioneer for their generous donation and said, “This unit allows opportunities to provide additional service for both accessing and surveying areas

where trucks are unable as well as providing to the community when our budgets don’t allow. A donation like this is incredible; it’s much appreciated.”

On Thursday, September 19, 2019 Mrs. Grethe Bugera of Vermilion passed away peacefully in the Vermilion Health Care Centre at the age of 73 years. Head Of Vermilion – Rowing Competition

Lakeland College hosted the Head Of Vermilion Rowing Competition on September 28, at the Vermilion Provincial Park.

Held every three years, Lakeland College students welcomed partici-

pants from the University of Alberta and Edmonton Rowing Club. Approximately 50 rowers competed in classes of doubles, quads, fours, and eights. The three and a half kilometre head race had timed starts and offered a good experience for several novice rowers.

Jenny McGuinness, Head Coach of

the Lakeland College Rowing Team said, “The students are so enthusiastic.

It’s nice to see that they are all willing to come out in the morning for practice and a lot of them are first year students. We would like to thank the Edmonton teams for coming, and many of the rowers’ families for coming to cheer them on,

as well as the Lakeland College volunteers.”

“It was a lot of fun! I think we worked together really well,” said Lakeland College student, Karalyn Mouly.

She went on to say that she likes the teamwork aspect of rowing and that her coaches are really knowledgeable.

St. Jerome’s Fall Supper

Approximately 740 people attended the St. Jerome’s School Fall Supper held at the Vermilion Regional Centre on September 26.

Principal, Allan Chase said, “We love the event because it involves our entire school community. Parents, staff, and children prepare the food, and many enjoy visiting. It is a good fundraiser for extracurricular activities, special projects, and school improvements in general.”

Vermilion Folk Club – Open Stage

The Vermilion Folk Club was excited to host Open Stage performances at the Vermilion Legion on September 21.

A highlight of this event was the Off Ramp Boys who are from Vegreville but have one member (guitarist Gordon Forbes) who grew up in Vermilion. Other members include lead singer Randy Kereliuk, bassist

Ralph Lange, and drummer Rob Hughes. Together for four years, the band played country and western music.

Being an open stage event, three or four other artists played throughout the evening. Rod MacMillan was the master of ceremonies, and Rob Baron was the soundman.

“We do it because we enjoy music. It was a good turnout and a very enthusiastic crowd,” said Gordon Forbes.

100 Years Ago In Mannville And District

History of Mannville and District Marion Smith and Don Good Submitted

1919 proved to be one of the driest years on record. Practically no rain fell during the growing season and as a result crops were very poor.

This was the beginning of one of the most disastrous winters the livestock men had experienced in this area. Actually the situation had been building up since the beginning of the war in 1914. First the war had created high prices for cattle with the result that the cattle population had been allowed to grow to excessive numbers.

Second, the high prices being paid for grain had resulted in much of the C.P.R. and Hudson’s Bay lands being bought up and turned into the production of wheat.

Thus while the cattle population was growing, the free pastures were slowly receding.

The dry year of 1919, following the

disastrous frost of 1918, left little or no grain in the country. In addition, where settlers had previously been able to cut hay on unoccupied land, the excessive numbers of cattle on the ranges and the dry year of 1919 left little feed to be obtained from that source. Threshing left only a few miserably small straw stacks and the settlers were becoming alarmed at the prospect of wintering the large numbers of cattle on the scanty supplies of feed that were in evidence.

Eight inches of snow fell on October 8th and most of it was here to stay.

The government was quick to recognize the emergency and was offering free freight to anyone who wished to ship their cattle out to where feed was obtainable. Many cattle were shipped out to Fort Saskatchewan, north of the Saskatchewan River and anywhere feed was to be had.

By Christmas, supplies of feed were nearly exhausted and by mid January, the

situation was becoming desperate. Oat sheaves were selling for 25 cents each.

Hay was worth $90 to $100 per ton. Old stack bottoms were being dug out and old straw barns were being fed to starving cattle and horses.

The Council of the Municipal District of Melberta, in an attempt to alleviate the situation, had ordered hay to be shipped in but were having great difficulty in locating it.

When they finally did get a carload, forty teams were lined up waiting for the car to be opened and more kept coming in. The municipal authorities, trying desperately to cope with the situation that was far beyond them, were dealing the hay out as fairly as possible but the last of the teams got one bale each.

It is little wonder that strong men cried to find themselves starting home to feed a starving herd with one bale of hay in their sleighs.

By mid March hundreds of cattle were

so weak that they had to be lifted every day to enable them to get water and whatever feed was available. Dozens of farmer could see themselves going broke but having put so much into the effort to bring the cattle through were trying to save something from the disaster. Some of the farmers went broke and many of the ones who were able to carry on were a long time recovering from the blow. It was not so much from the loss of cattle as from the tremendous costs involved that the farmers were crippled financially.

In the spring the prairies were dotted with hundreds of dead cattle. The sad part of it was that after the farmers struggled to bring their cattle through, the price dropped to practically nothing in 1920. A steer that might have been worth $250.00 in 1918 would probably have brought $25.00 in 1920.

Warm summer days seemed rare, among all the rainy days. Already it is fall, and it is breathtakingly beautiful, but I am craving more sunny days. We are currently waiting for drier weather to finish combining. Combining and back to school time bring to mind certain recipes, and puffed wheat squares are one of those foods. They are great for both school lunches, harvest season, or a sweet treat as a dessert.

thing I made frequently, but it has fallen off the radar. This was a very popular cake back in the 1970’s. I actually stopped making it because it was so good, and I felt I would eat more of it than I should. I lacked the necessary self control around this favourite square, as many who are familiar with Puffed Wheat Cake will understand. This is a square that is well know on the prairies, and most people have fond memories of it from family get- togethers, grandma’s house, church and community functions.

It is interesting to note that like Butter Tarts and Nanaimo Bars, Puffed Wheat Cake has it birthing in Canada as well.

In fact Puffed Wheat Cake is believed to be invented in Red Deer, Alberta over

100 years ago. In 1913, A. J. Russell opened a candy shop on Ross Street, where he made several candies, including the puffed wheat square. During World War 1 and World War 2 molasses was used in place of sugar, because sugar was rationed at the time. The original squares were harder, and not the ooey gooey yumminess that they are now. When cooking the chocolate syrup, be careful not to undercook, as the bars will not stick together, or if it is overcooked, then they will be more brittle and drier. Keep in mind that you cannot use regular pancake syrup, so for success, you will need to purchase a syrup such as Rogers Golden Syrup.

It is thicker, and will give you the results that you need.

Puffed Wheat Cake 1/3 cup butter 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup, golden syrup, or lily white, or corn syrup 1/4 cup cocoa powder 1 teaspoon vanilla 7 cups of puffed wheat Butter a 9 x 13 inch pan. In a pot combine the butter, brown sugar, cocoa, vanilla and corn syrup. On medium heat bring to a boil, stirring. Reduce heat to prevent burning but continue to boil for 3 minutes, or until it reaches a temperature of 235 – 240 degrees, on a candy thermometer. Stir the cocoa sugar mixture into the puffed wheat. Press the mixture into the buttered pan, and allow to fully cool before slicing into squares.

The school itself was built in 1910 and served as an important landmark for the entire area as the brick school, a rarity at the time, was visible from all around the countryside.

The first school board would consist of Tim Thomas, R.A. Wilson, Ernest Mattel and Dick Hansel. R.A. Wilson was the first secretary of the school.

There were many teachers at the school, including a Miss Bollard who roomed with A.B. Craig. She was the first teacher at the school in 1910.. A prairie fire erupted during her tenure and she was nearly burned in it. Soon after, she quit and was replaced by a Miss Palmer who taught out the remainder of the school year.

The school was an important part of the lives of the students. Philip Lemp spoke of one time when the boys rode on horseback at noon to a local ditch, stripped off all their clothes and jumped

into the ditch water to escape the heat.

For many years, the school operated as a two-room school until it closed in 1945. At that point, students were bussed into Dewberry Village School.

The school itself was bought by Harry Goldsmith in 1953. The last teacher at the school would be Fern Campbell in 1945.

H ar o l d W h i te, w h o s er ve d fr o m February 1928 to June 1929 related his experience at the school as a teacher as follows: “I believe Dewberr y Rural School was the most important position for me that I ever held. There I learned to teach..I tried to guide over 40 strong, h e a l t hy a n d e n er g et i c c h i l d re n i n eight grades, when I was 19 years old myself.”

The experience was one he loved, even during the tough times.

“A little girl had her jaw shattered by

a ball bat. There was no telephone and no open roads. Dick Hansel acted as doctor in the child’s home.”

Years after the experience of teaching at the school, White still received letters from his student.

“The greatest joy and satisfaction of my life’s work has been a few thank you letters from students after they have gone to the top. Also, receiving many royal invitations into the homes of former pupils, after a period of 25 to 45 years is most satisfying.”

What’s Happening In Clandonald

Clandonald Agricultural Society Submitted

Fall is upon us with all the beautiful colours. Children are back in school and farmers are busy in the field when it is not raining. Please, God, the weather will be favourable so farmers can get their crops off and are kept safe this harvest season.

O n a s ad n ote, o ur Cl an d o nal d community lost a great lady on September 22. Margaret Farrell was a dedicated and strong supporter of Clandonald, as well as an integral member of our Clandonald Agricultural Society. No matter what needed to be done—Margaret was there. We shared many laughs and have many wonderful memories. She was a kind and caring person who shared her time and talent at fundraisers, funeral lunches, fall suppers, local events, meetings, etc. This special lady will be dearly missed by all who knew her. We extend our deepest sympathy to Brent, Barb, Howie, Audra and their families. Know you are in our thoughts and prayers—we share in your grief.

We were very fortunate the weather cooperated for our fair in August. It was wonderful to see the tables full of all the exhibits received on Friday and viewed by many on Saturday. Our exhibit winners this year were grand aggregate – Gloria deJong, senior grand aggregate – Audrey Cusack, best apple pie in memory of Rosie McMullan – Shirley Osinchuk, buffet arrangement of mixed flowers

in memory of Winnie Convey – Cheryl Nawrot, knitting open class in memory of Winnie Convey – Audrey Cusack and “Granny’s Green Thumb” in memory of Evelyn Lawrence – Cindy Lychak. Saturday’s pancake breakfast was tasty with the help of Webb’s Machinery staff and local volunteers. The Prairie Dogs entertained everyone at breakfast and then again in the afternoon with their wide variety of music. Our face painters were busy in the morning and afternoon painting youngster’s faces. Many local and neighbouring community floats made their way through town. The float winners were first place Clandonald Seed Cleaning Association, second place Clandonald School and Kindergarten and third place Friends of Clandonald. The bestdressed horse winner in memory of Jim McCormack was Myranda Lawrence.

Every year the Volunteer of the Year Award in memory of Denis McCormack is presented to someone who volunteers many hours to enhance our community.

This year’s recipient was Clayton Dyjur.

Sharon Jaremco was the lucky winner of the Clandonald Agricultural Society draw of $25. After the parade, wagon rides were available. The afternoon was full of activities from watermelon eating contest, pie-eating contest, tractor pedal pushers, children’s races/games, bingo, mutton busting, catch the chicken and pig contests and wild pony rides.

Winners of the tractor pedal pushers 5 years and under were first place Jaxon

Baechler, second place Rhett Hopaluk, and third place Bryn Gessleman. For the 6 to 8 years category in the tractor pedal pushers, the winners were first place Emerson McLaughlin, second place Rilen Bodurka and third place Briggs Matthews. The bouncy house, laser tag and three-lane obstacle course entertained many all afternoon. Jesse Lewis and his daughter entertained young and old with their illusionist show in the afternoon. A big thank you to all who helped in any way to make our fair a success from the many volunteers to those who attended. Mark your calendars for next year’s fair on August 8, 2020.

There was a void this year at the fair with the absence of Marlene Lawrence.

Marlene passed away in January this year. She was very involved with the exhibits from being an exhibitor, judge and dessert specialist. Marlene shared her many talents generously in the community. She is dearly missed.

Clandonald’s Fall Supper of ham and turkey with all the trimmings is on October 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Clandonald Community Hall. The cost is $12 per person and preschoolers are free. This is a fundraiser for Hall renovations. A workbee for the supper will be held on Saturday, October 19 starting at 9:30 a.m. All help would be greatly appreciated. Plan to attend to support this tasty fundraiser.

The St. Columba Parish in Clandonald welcomed our new priest, Fr. Joy,

who started in August. We look forward to getting to know Fr. Joy during his stay with us.

The Clandonald Agricultural Society and Clandonald & District Recreation Association extend our thanks to the County of Vermilion River for their monetary support. The Clandonald Agricultural Society was able to purchase a convection oven this year while the Clandonald & District Recreation Association bought round tables and a projector system for the Clandonald Community Hall. The County is also supporting our upcoming Fall Supper. We appreciate your community support!

A man owned a small farm outside Vegreville. Employment standards claimed he was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an agent out to interview him.

“I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them,” demanded the agent.

“Well, there’s my hired hand who’s been with me for 3 years. I pay him $600 a week plus free room and board. The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $500 a month plus free room and board. Then there’s the half-wit that works here about 18 hours a day. He makes $10 a week and I buy him a bottle of rye every week,” replied the farmer.

“That’s the guy I want to talk to; the half-wit,” says the agent.

The farmer says, “That would be me.”

St Saviour’s In Action - Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – Build An Ecobrick!

Our St Saviour’s Anglican Church parishioners have long been supporters of reducing waste and the use of singleuse disposable items. We happily wash dishes for church gathering and functions, rather than using styrofoam, paper or plastic cups, plates and cutlery. This is a great opportunity for team building, sharing stories, brain-storming and getting-to-know one another.

We have extended this practice to our booth at the annual Vermilion fair.

We stopped using straws and plastic glasses for our lemonade and switched from plastic to wooden stir sticks, spoons and forks. We also saved the single use plastic (bun bags, cup wrappers etc.) for use in our newest project – Ecobricks.

The concept of Ecobricks was introduced in a presentation by the m e m b e r s o f L a k e l a n d C o l l e g e ’s enviro club in the spring of this year.

An Ecobrick is a plastic bottle packed tightly with CLEAN, DRY plastic, cellophane, foil, laminated paper, and/or styrofoam to create a reusable build3” wide version the ing block. At that presentation,

students had encouraged community members to drop the Ecobricks off at Lakeland College. Once they gather enough Ecobricks they will create a building project. The suggestion was to use 2 litre, 710 ml or 500 ml size bottles, keeping the size and shape consistent.

Our congregation was very excited to h ave J e a n et te M c G l y n n, M ar i a M ejia an d M ad i M ueller, 2n d year s t u d e n t s i n L a ke l a n d C o l l e g e’s Conservation and Restoration Ecology program, visit with us to discuss strategies to spread the word and get our entire communit y involved. As members of the enviro club they too are very passionate about this project.

McGlynn commented, “Our enviro club has been exploring the idea of packing other non-recyclable container s suc h as c of fee jar s. It ’ll make building something a little more challenging but that’s part of the fun. One of the favourite ideas so far has been to build a couch but we’ll hopefully get enough Ecobricks to build many things.

Many of our projects such as our bat houses, have been running for several years and hopefully this will be another one.

To d a t e o u r p a r i s h i o n e r s h av e completed over a dozen Ecobricks, with many more in progress. The Ecobricks will be given to the enviro club to add to their building supplies. We look forward to seeing their first building project!

Consid ering Ver milion’s re cyc le program no longer accepts plastic, which results in it all going to a landfill, the urgency to react now is extremely important. We challenge the entire community and beyond to first refuse to buy plastic, but if you must, use it to

build Ecobricks. You will be amazed at the amount you can pack into one 2 litre bottle!

How to build an Ecobrick: • Wash and dry a plastic bottle & cap • Stuff bottle with CLEAN, DRY plastic, cellophane, styrofoam, &/ or foil • Compress and firmly pack into the bottle with dowel.

• Close with lid Hint: Cut hard plastic (straws, bread tags, containers such as yogurt, cottage cheese, clamshell and styrofoam into small pieces for easier packing.

What can you build with Ecobricks?

Walking Through Grief Submitted

October 15 is a time set aside across the country to remember and support those families who have experienced the pain and grief of; miscarriage, stillbirth, infant loss due to SIDS and other causes. This is a time to remember the loss that took a little treasure, a little angel far too soon. Often this is a time that remembering becomes a lonely journey, as those around are uncomfortable with how to support grieving families. There often is a stigma around the loss of someone the community never got to know, and those who have suffered such a great loss may feel that they don’t have a right to grieve.

This is a time for community to become aware of those who grieve and “seek to understand” the impact of such a loss for parents and also siblings.

For you the parents, we honour you as you remember the anticipation of being a parent to now having empty arms. This has become the beginning of an emotional “roller coaster”; anger, fear, guilt, blame, depression anxiety and so much more. You have experienced one of life’s greatest losses and you “grieve” .

Some thoughts: Your grief will take time to work through, it is a journey you must make and hopefully you will have found those who will journey with you .

• Take care of yourself.- Eat well and get plenty of rest so you can continue to heal emotionally.

• Express yourself in a way that fits who you are- find that safe person to talk about your feelings, fears, and your grief. Journal or find a special project that has meaning for you. This can be a release for the bottled feelings inside.

• Explore available resources – There are books, articles, poems and information on the Internet and support groups available.

• Build your support net work- It may be family and friends or faith community. You Vermilion Voice-5.08x7.6inch may want to contact a support group for

Fun Rodeo

Lakeland College hosted a Fun Rodeo in Vermilion on September 25. Makayla Wowk who is from Myrnam, entered team roping, break away roping, and barrel racing and said, “It is a good community night and opportunity to practice your events.”

Every couple wants their wedding to be absolutely flawless. Achieving perfection, however, requires quite a bit of organizing. Here are a few things to remember when planning your big day.

Building A Family Gratitude Practice

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, we are reminded of the importance of giving thanks but did you know all the health benefits associated with gratitude? It promotes new social connections, improves physical and mental health, enhances empathy towards others, can improve your sleep, fosters self-esteem, and can even play a role in overcoming trauma. Would you like to begin developing a year round gratitude practice for your whole family? It’s easier and maybe even more fun than you may think.

Consider building a family gratitude book. This can look like a journal with separate entries by each family member or a more formal book with everyone contributing a few pages. A journal

style book would include each family members adding either daily or even 3-4 entries per week. It is interesting to see what everyone is grateful for and, even more importantly, why they are grateful for it and how it has benefitted them.

A formal book is fun to create as well.

Even extended family could be included with each person designing a page with a drawing and written explanation of things they are grateful for. It’s always a good idea to leave blank pages at the end so that new things, experiences, or people can be added throughout the year. Consider laminating the cover and binding it to keep as a special family treasure.

Are you interested in developing a family practice but recognize that you have limited time? Find an old jar (as large as you can find) and create a Family Gratitude Jar. Have the kids decorate it with stickers or permanent markers and

Choose a time each day or even a couple of times per week to jot down something or someone you are grateful for. Remember that even the tiniest thing could be included. If you have a little extra time, read a few of the entries together.

Find regular times to talk about gratitude. Car rides home from family get togethers or sports outings or drives in nature can be optimal times to model expressions of gratitude. Breakfast or supper times can also be a wonderful time to talk about the things that you are all thankful for. Some families find bedtime to be a wonderful opportunity for a little chat about what may have happened during the day that you may feel gratitude for. Focusing on even one small thing right before bed, can be a wonderful way to end your day.

Remember, the benefits of gratitude are more likely to be felt from a regular practice of gratitude. The more you practice, the more you will start to be looking for all the wonderful things in your life.

Practicing as a family can be as beneficial as it is fun, so have some fun with this all year round.

SCHOOL NEWS Anna Svenungard Submitted

St. Jerome’s Annual Fall Sup per was a smashing success again this year! Both settings sold out and it was all possible thanks to the generous donations of food from students, parents, and staff.

Not only was all of the food donated, but countless volunteers gave their time and chopped vegetables, set up tables, sliced desserts, helped in the kitchen, served food and cleaned up. Father Joy was asked to say Grace, setting the tone of gratitude and reflection before we broke bread together.

The tables were beautifully decorated with centrepieces handcrafted by students from Kindergarten to Grade 5. We need to say a special thank you to Paulette Moir for her dedication in preparing and orchestrating much of the key details of this event. Also, Char Young volunteers her time and talents cooking to help us deliver such a delicious meal. This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year and proceeds go to various causes throughout the school, such as contributing towards various cultural events and guest speakers, funding a portion of classroom supplies, and lowering transportation costs for physical education classes and field trips. All in all, we are grateful and blessed that everyone comes together each year with a giving spirit to support our

We still in need of volunteers to help with the community build of the universally accessible playground October 3-5. This playground will be a wonderful addition to the community of Vermilion offering structures that all students can enjoy, including a play structure and swing that students who are in a wheelchair or who have other mobility needs can access. SCHOOL NEWS Karen King Submitted

At the school c o u n c il m e et i n g, school administration shared several items. They informed parents that all BTPS teachers received professional development on conceptbased learning from Tiffanee Brown. They reported that a variety of clubs are being offered right now at VES. The Grade 6 spirit club will once again be attending WE Day in Edmonton on October 22. VES has approximately 15 students in Grade 6 currently joining JR Robson for volleyball. The VES budget is tight, with student numbers very close to projected numbers. Sarah Popil is the new Social Emotional Coach (SEC) at VES, a position that replaced the former Family School Liaison (FSL) program. Information on the VES Fit Family Challenge was shared. VES will be hosting a Benchmarking Food Environments Validation Session on October 15 from 7-9 pm that is open to the public. The recently announced Breakfast Grant was mentioned. VES had some trees planted over the summer near the playground. The provincial government has placed the new curriculum for K-Grade 4 on hold. VES will again participate in Service Projects, with artwork for the hospital being one of them. Our students in Grade 3 will be participating in the SLAs (Student Learning Assessments). Thank you to the Friends of VES for their financial assistance in the purchasing of new iPads for ECS. VES will be moving to digital reporting of grades, which is a change from the traditional report card.

Simple Machines in science. Students identified simple machines on the playground and are experimenting with simple machines in the classroom.

The Grade 4 quilt is complete. Last year the 4B class dyed fabric which was then used to create a beautiful quilt. The students have chosen to donate this quilt to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton.

Congratulations to the junior girls and the junior boys Grade 6/7 volleyball teams on their performance at the tournament in St. Paul on Sept 20 and 21. The girls just missed the playoffs and the boys fought hard for bronze but came up just short. Also, congrats to the cross country running club on their first performance at the Riverdale Run. The whole team did very well. Special acknowledgment to Ava Cadrain (second out of 28 runners), Addison Simmonds (3/36), Kaedence Eriksen (4/36), and Alli Crowe (7/36). The next run will be in Vermilion on October 2.

Mrs. Alana Pinkoski-Benoit is the VES VIBE Wellness Coach. This year, you will normally find her at the school on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. What is VIBE? VIBE is one of the Mental Health Capacity Building sites that has received annualized funding from Alberta Health Services. VIBE works to promote positive mental health in children, youth, and families. They offer classroom programming and organize community events throughout the year. Alana spends most of her time with students during health classes and recess time. VIBE runs many recess activities with the help of the Grade 6 VIBE Advisory, who also organizes mental wellness activities for the school. A variety of

2019 Marketing Canada Awards

Submitted On September 24, the Economic Developers Association of Canada held their 51st Annual Conference in Edmonton, and presented the Northeast Alberta Collaborative with a Marketing Canada Award.

The award was presented to the Northeast Alberta Collaborative for their Advertising Campaign, #TakeItToTheLake.

The Town of Vermilion being a partner of the Northeast Alberta Collaborative was mentioned. Other participants included project lead Jana Rowe from Lac La Biche County, Jim Barr from Seekers Media who was the production and content creation contractor, partner Diane Jenkinson from the Municipal District of Bonnyville, partner Rachel Dragun from Athabasca County, and Travel Alberta through cooperative funding. “ We are ver y excited have been recognized by our national organization. Marauders Tame Only One Set Of Cougars

Monday afternoon football was more successful than a cold, rainy Thursday afternoon for the Vermilion Marauders.

The team split two games played in the space of five days last week. First, they tamed the Caroline Cougars. The 20-12 win was their first and came in their home opener in a twice rescheduled game.

The Marauders scored on their first possession and never trailed. Their three majors came from three different players.

Quarterback Tylin Vold scored from three yards out on a two-play drive that started on the Caroline 25. Riley Cronin’s kickoff soared into the endzone and was brought out to the five. Caroline advanced to the 12 before being forced to punt.

Ryland Fougere scrambled 22 yards for antouchdown on the first play. Riley Cronin notched his first kicking convert to give the Marauders an 8-0 lead.

No more points were added to the scoreboard until nearly halftime when Caroline took over the ball on the Marauder 43 after a third down punt. Quarterback Jade Dipalo did all the work on four carries for the touchdown with 49 seconds left in the half. The convert was low, and the Marauders took a two-point 8-6 lead in halftime.

L andyn Her zog returned a punt 105-yards to pay dirt at 1:26 of the third quarter. He out legged his opponents and was untouched from midfield. There wasn’t a convert and the Marauders added six more to their total.

In the fourth quarter the teams traded

taking over on downs until the Marauders scored at 4:50. They started at the 27, moved up to the 15 and were pushed back to the 20 on a procedure call. Fougere fought his way to the endzone for the TD. Flags littered the field, but the call was roughing against Caroline and the Marauders were up 20-6.

However, Caroline would score again with 49 seconds left in the game. They started on their own 26. The convert attempt was low, giving them 12 points.

Along with his touchdown, Herzog continued his standout tackling. Top defensive player was Zac Bodie who knocked down a couple of passes and recovered a fumble along with delivering effective hits.

Playing in his first game, Steven Bodurka caught two passes, one for 35 yards. He also picked up a few yards on the ground. He looked more comfortable on Thursday in his second game with 23 yards in carries. He also gathered all purpose yards returning kicks.

Thursday brought another team with the Cougar moniker, this time from Vegreville.

The weather was much different. While the rain stopped at game time, conditions were slick and cold.

For Vegreville, the footing didn’t bother their running game, especially kick returner Daryk Giebelhaus. His three touchdowns on two kickoff and a punt return were the difference in the game as Vegreville defeated the Marauders 42-24. It was Vegreville’s first 6-man football win.

However, the Marauders did score first.

Vegreville were called for both procedure and offside. Then Herzog sacked quarterback Jacob Pantaleon on third down. The Marauders took over on downs but were deep in their own end at their 20.

On their first offensive play Fougere wove through the middle and away from tacklers for an 85-yard touchdown. An errant snap meant no convert and the Marauders had six.

Giebelhaus returned the ensuing kickoff for Vegreville’s first score. Kicker Cyrus Phillips provided the convert for an 8-6 Cougar lead.

The Marauder offense started on their own 45 after the Vegreville kick off and Fougere scored his second TD on another long run, 49 yards. A dribbled snap also prevented another convert attempt making the score 12-6 at 4:38 of the first quarter.

The kickoff was déjà vu as Giebelhaus returned the short kickoff to the endzone.

Only 10 seconds came off the clock and the Cougars were up 16-12.

They would add to their lead with Giebelhaus’ third touchdown, a punt return from his own 30. The play should have been called back on a hold, but instead it was another six for the visitors. The convert was low, and they led by 10. 22-12.

The Marauder scored on their next possession. Bodurka returned the kickoff to the Veg side of midfield. After a procedure call against the home team and roughness against the visitors, Vold found

The rain returned in the second half and as the teams adjusted to conditions, there was less successful offense. Vermilion scored late in the third quarter. Wild Horses Of Alberta – Facing Possible Cull

Worried that a provincial cull may take place this fall, the Wild Horses Of Alberta Society is hopeful that the current memorandum will be extended, allowing them to study further.

The Wild Horses of Alberta Society (WHOAS) is a charitable society with the mandate to get better protection for wild horses. According to president, Bob Henderson, the government currently considers them feral and stray animals, making them susceptible to future culls as the current memorandum of understanding will be expiring at the end of the month.

“We are dealing with government and are preparing our final report but this time limitation won’t allow further research.

We are currently compiling our information with the University of Calgary results and what they believe to be the way to go forward with contraception. We have been doing a study administering ZonaStat-H and the only problem we’ve found

with it is that it can work with one dose but usually requires a booster to make it more effective. We don’t want to sterilize them but give them a pregnancy break,” said Henderson.

He went on to say that they are looking into the possibility of using another vaccine that would work for up to five years and are hoping it will be in line by next year. WHOAS operates in part of the Sundre equine zone with a study area of 490 square kilometres or 121,000 acres. In 2016, they estimated that there were 850 wild horses in Alberta.

Though it is really difficult for the group to keep track of the horses in the country with or without all terrain vehicles, they are continuing to work with a researcher from the University of Saskatchewan. WHOAS has been supporting the researcher with their own funds to find data on the horses as well as what affect they are having on the environment.

“Until this research is done, how can you make a proper decision on the horses?

He explained that a cull is where the government captures the horses. He stated that in the United States with massive culls, the horses have actually gone on to reproduce even more. In Canada in 2013, almost 220 went for slaughter and the WHOAS was able to step in but were only

able to rescue nine. During the last cull in 2015, there were only 48, and the WHOAS were able to take 39.

“This is why we continue with our adoption program; it may not be as nice as running free and wild, but at least it gives them a chance for life. We currently have five horses in rescue that will be available for adoption soon including three geldings, a mare, and a filly. We do a lot of fundraising through our annual calendar which will be available to order online October 15, at wildhorsesofalberta.com.
