Focus Celebrates 60th Anniversary

VAPD – Focus celebrated their 60th Anniversary at the Elks Hall in Vermilion on September 20.

Vermilion Association for Persons with Disabilities (VAPD) – Finding Opportunities through Community Understanding & Support (Focus) was eager to share changes that the organization underwent throughout the years. Staff dressed in themed costumes to represent each decade to make their presentations. A slideshow was shared depicting favourite moments and field trips over the years.

Emceeing the event were CEO Shelly Chomlack, and individual Della Riley.

Awards were presented to the Ministry of Social Services, the Rural Municipality of Wilton # 472, and the Town of Vermilion as well as several staff and individual awards.

“What I see in Lloydminster is that Focus provides help for families who are struggling with various issues. There are a lot of people in society that struggle to be what they can be, and this system assists everyone from children with challenges in school, economic situations, divorce or family trauma, accidents, etc.,” said Glen Dow, Reeve of the RM of Wilton.

He explained that Focus operates in one of the RM buildings in Lloydminster, even interacting with the Fire Department and completing crafts.

“Focus began in 1959 by a group of committed parents who wanted to offer a different option for their children (respite relief and accommodations). VAPD – Focus has two locations working both out of Vermilion and Lloydminster. The services we can offer have grown so much! We currently have 52 staff, two 24-hour-awake group homes and outreach service as well as Alberta Brain Injury in service in both communities. We are nonunionized which gives us the freedom to be innovative with our programming,” said CEO Shelly Chomlack.

According to staff, in 2018 Focus received 100 per cent in quality of care, 100 per cent in quality of service, and 100

per cent in organization framework. VAPD - Focus works with Alberta and Saskatchewan governments as well as other organizations, and hopes to continue to grow in the future. Chomlack added, “I would like to thank every individual and their parents for trusting us to provide quality care, and the staff for their commitment to this field.”

“You don’t have to look very far to see the outreach that Focus has had, and that they have been committed to this community for 60 years. Tonight we recognize the past and present people who have had to fill the gaps in our community; we are deeply grateful for that and all that you will continue to accomplish in the future,” said Mayor Caroline McAuley.

I have just finished attending a round of trade shows featuring everything from fashion to home goods. I was fortunate while in Toronto to be able to hear Andrew Pike, the interior designer for the Marilyn Dennis show speak on the upcoming trends. In Edmonton I enjoyed listening to designer extraordinaire and trend setter Cory Christopher who shared his take on the upcoming trends, which were remarkably similar to Andrews Pikes forecasting. I was inspired by small town boy turned Olympic Gold Medalist, Jon Montgomery, host of The Amazing Race Canada who also shared his journey, including the pivotal moment when he decided that a small-town boy could become Olympic caliber. At the shows I walked tens of miles, and saw a multitude of creative ideas and new products. People often say to me it must be so much fun to go to the shows, and in truth it is, but it is also work, that leaves me with feet so sore that I can hardly walk on them after 9 -15 plus hour days of walking on cement, and visiting showrooms, with more walking after the show closes. My head is so full, from holding and juggling thousands of products, styles and colours in my mind every day of the show, trying to put mental groupings together, of the right products and trends for my local customers and keeping it real and all to a budget.

I am sharing the trends I saw and heard with you, but keep in mind that in August I am buying for December and up to next July. Even with that advance window many of the trends that are forecast won’t be available to me until 2020 and then it will be even later that they will be in shops for the public.

It is interesting to note that the trends start first in Europe, and then second to Canada.

Canada, generally speaking is ahead of the United States in style trends for both home and fashion. Every so often, I like to focus on the early families of the Vermilion area. Today, I’m looking at the Victor DeDelly family.

Victor DeDelly, along with his brother and sister, left Switzerland in 1906 to find a homestead in the Vermilion area. Victor spent time on the homestead before he began to work on the railroad for a few years prior to 1914 when he began to work for the Congrieve family. The Congrieve family had come to Canada from England a few years earlier.

In 1914, when the First World War broke out, the Congrieve family returned to England and left all of their possessions and the property in the care of DeDelly.

The following year, DeDelly would marry his wife, who had also worked for the Congrieve family on the farm. She had come from England in January of 1914.

In 1915, Rose DeDelly was born in the log house on the property.

In 1922, she began to attend the local one-room schoolhouse and had Pearl Tory as her teacher. She would attend school for the next seven years before she quit to begin working at home.

In 1934, Rose would marry Harry Perkins and they would live together on their own property in the Bowtell area. The couple would have one son and three daughters together.

In 1942, Walter Congrieve, the son of Galfred Congrieve, was stationed in Calgary as a member of the British Army.

He came to the property to see where he had grown up, including the log house that he was born in, just like Rose was. According to Rose in her recollection, he was not impressed with the property at all.

In 1946, Harry formed a committee to purchase the school that Rose had attended many years previous. They were able to raise the money, $150, to move the

ing and uncertain digital world. The strength and resilience of journalistic standards, their research indicates, is rooted in the fact that they have been historically tied to journalism’s core mission: to provide citizens with the information they need to effectively govern themselves.

The fascinating part of this analysis is that it casts journalism standards not as esoteric, disconnected principles, but rather as living, breathing creatures that are capable of evolving to meet the needs of new environments and platforms. To see the dynamism of this theory in action, one need only examine the ever-changing guidelines developed by or for journalists on how to effectively report on many sensitive issues, including suicides, addictions, trauma and mental health; these resources are being championed by many groups in Canadian journalism circles.

Discussions about professional standards in journalism may not be sexy. But what other simple means do citizens have to help them differentiate ethical journalism from the online propagandists, political partisans and conspiracy theorists who exist for the sole purpose of peddling misinformation and special agendas?

Professional standards and ethics for confirming, verifying and/or contextualizing information play a critical role in a time when everyone with an internet connection can be a proprietor of their own virtual press. While the development and use of accepted standards lack a “Hollywood moment,” these codes provide a priceless public service in the event that a tsunami of false or misleading information begins to wash up on our digital shores.

For what this story lacks in glitz and glamour, it makes up for with healthy doses of truth and substance. As Canadians head to the polls this autumn, that’s very much a story worth sharing.

SIGA Holds Grand Opening For New Central Office In Saskatoon

September 13, 2019 – Saskatoon, SK – SIGA, with our partner, Muskeg Lake Cree Nation (MLCN), held a ribbon cutting today to celebrate the opening of SIGA’s new central office location.

This year we developed a 40,880 square foot office with a 9,750 square foot warehouse on MLCN. The building has a state-of-the-art warehouse, allowing SIGA to become a true operator and to manage our own slot system, multiple meeting and board rooms, and ample parking for employees.

Chief Reginald Bellerose, SIGA’s Board Chair, speaks to the collaboration of key partners involved in making this new building a reality.

“On behalf of SIGA, we’re thrilled to be opening our new central office location, a consolidated effort between us and our key partners, Muskeg Lake Cree Nation and the City of Saskatoon. This is an important milestone for the company, an exciting addition to SIGA’s operations that will benefit our province’s 74 First Nations and the local community.”

The land is owned by Muskeg Lake Cree Nation and is leased to SIGA,

which, in turn is responsible for the building’s operation. We worked with MLCN to source local suppliers for the project.

Zane Hansen expands upon the driver behind the new office and what it means for SIGA. “This new facility will enable us to increase our capacities and to be able to better support all of our casino locations across the province. Even more, a warehouse was essential to allow us to take over the management of our slots and the driving factor behind this new office build.”

He adds, ‘This has been a long-time

Brighter Beginnings hosted their first Time To Rhyme session of the year at the Vermilion Public Library on September 19.

Meeting weekly, the early literacy program runs from September – June every Thursday from 10:15 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

The group incorporates action songs, rhyming and snacks for children aged 0 – school age and is an opportunity to network with other children and parents.

Brighter Beginnings also partners with the Vermilion and Area Early Childhood Coalition in order to run the program.

Time To Rhyme is free, and participants can drop in whichever weeks they are able.

A Response To The Misinformation Regarding The “Say No To Mass Immigration” Billboards

I am writing in response to the “Say No to Mass Immigration” billboards that popped up across the Nation in late August. This created an outcry from the left-wing media and an organized minority which spread lies and misinformation about the People’s Party of Canada and subsequently provided the pressure to have the billboards removed. I am writing to correct the mainstream media who made little effort to provide a balanced review to Canadians on this matter. Facts The “Say No to Mass Immigration” billboard was put up by True North Strong & Free Advertising Corp. and according to a filing with Elections Canada, this thirdparty group was run by Frank Smeenk, the chief executive of a Toronto based mining exploration company. This was not a PPC advertising campaign and Maxime Bernier, leader of the PPC had no prior knowledge of these billboards.

The True North Strong & Free Advertising Corp. did not field the questions and criticisms that the billboards generated and the issue landed on Pattison Outdoor Advertising, which owns the billboards that the ads were placed on.

Pattison issued the statement on August 25, 2019 saying that while the billboards didn’t violate any policy, they would be removed.

The media coverage of this situation has painted a picture that the PPC is racist, hostile and unwelcoming to immigrants entering Canada. My question to you is this -how is the discussion about

reducing the number of immigrants entering Canada each year racist? Possibly, we have lost the definition of the term racist? The billboard did not say No to Immigration it said No to MASS Immigration.

The position Mr. Bernier is taking to remove Canada from the UN Global Compact on Migration is relevant and important to Canadians in a time where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has stated publicly that Canada has no core identity and is a post- national state. It would also be important to understand that Objective 17 of the Compact mandates the control of all media including social media to be PRO MASS IMMIGRATION. Keep in mind that a $600 million buyout has been given to the Canadian mainstream media. Mr. Trudeau is in full agreement with the UN Compact on Migration and he is positioning Canada to adhere to whatever is defined by the UN in terms of International law. Most Canadians are uninformed of the UN Compact on Migration which is a treaty arranged by the UN on behalf of the member states that outlines how to manage global migration from global South to global North.

It dictates the standards and regulations that Nation states grant to migrants. Mr. Bernier speaks directly about this issue.

The Liberal and the Conservative parties are campaigning on an immigration policy that is either a) inviting

350,000 + immigrants per year or b) unclear on the number of immigrants per year. That works out or could work out to over 1 million immigrants every 3 years. Is that not mass immigration?

Canadian taxpayers need a clear policy from the leader of each party. Canadians hold an expectation of the immigrant to adopt the history, language and culture of Canada. Does it not make it more difficult to integrate when dealing with these high numbers? A government is elected to represent Canadian citizens in Ottawa. A government is elected to defend the national interests, security and sovereignty of our country. This is an election issue and Canadians need to be informed on all sides of the matter.

In closing, I encourage you to review the PPC policies on Canadian Identity, Refugees and Immigration that I have provided or go to https://www. peoplespartyofcanada.ca /platform .

Consider the issues presented, such as signing on to the UN Compact on Migration and entertaining a fair discussion regarding immigration. A healthy democracy relies on open dialogue and an independent press. Maxime Bernier is defending foundational Canadian values, and he is guarding the very essence of what makes Canada great. This grassroots movement is viable and is stimulating a national conversation regarding the security and sovereignty of our country.

Our Spartan volleyball teams are working hard and having fun this season! The Sr. Girls hosted the St. Jerome’s Classic tournament September 13 & 14.

There was a lot of great teamwork and competition throughout the days. Our Sr. Boys took home the gold medal at the Cold Lake High School Volleyball tournament the same weekend. Way to go Spartans!

Ms. Svenungard’s Grade One class went apple picking at Jane Mercier’s house last week. She spoke of how the Lord has blessed her with beautiful apple trees and how it brings her great joy to share the bounty. They used the apples to make delicious applesauce and each student baked an individual apple pie.

Learning is delicious in Grade One! It was a beautiful fall day for a field trip on September 19. Gr. 1S, Gr.1M, and Gr.2L travelled to the provincial park to learn about nature in the fall. Three nature enthusiasts came to share their expertise with students. Peggy Moore took the kids to explore how various seeds travel around the trout pond. Jenna Kalczak taught the students about plant and

VES once again has a cross-country running club. They held their first practice on September 9 and will practice twice each week, on Mondays and Tuesdays. There are approximately 27 students who have expressed interest in the club. At this point, they have plans to attend two races.

The first was at Riverdale on September 20 and the second one is right here in Vermilion on October 2. Mrs. Dawn Riley and Mr. Calvin Anhorn are the coaches again this year.

VES students are joining up with students from JR Robson to participate in the Terry Fox Run together. VES students will go over to JR Robson School, watch a short video about Terry Fox and then walk laps on their school grounds. This will take place at about 1:30 on September 23. Please join us if you are able.

Orange Shirt Day is on September 30. If you’d like to join us for our assembly at 10:30, please accept this as your invitation. Students across BTPS will be participating in Orange Shirt Day - a day to honor residential school survivors and

Come out and support St. Jerome’s while enjoying a delicious meal at the Fall Supper on Thursday, September 26 at the Regional Centre. There will be two seatings, one at 5 p.m. and one at 6:30 p.m, with the option of purchasing a takeaway meal during either of those times if you are out harvesting or otherwise unable to enjoy a sit-down meal. Tickets are available for purchase at the school office, the church, or online (if you have a child attending St. Jerome’s School). We hope to see you there!

We will be recognizing Orange Shirt Day again this year on Monday, September 30. Wearing an orange shirt and promoting the slogan, Ever y Child Matters, is an affirmation of our commitment to raise awareness of the residential school experience and to ensure that every child matters as we focus on our hope for a better future in which chil-

dren are empowered to help each other.

We are looking for volunteers to help with the community build of the universally accessible playground October 3-5. We will need 5-6 people per day to help with assembly and set up. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Allan Chase at the school office.

This day will begin with the learning of the story about Phyllis Webstad, a girl who attended a residential school in BC and had her brand-new orange shirt taken away from her. Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and community agencies to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. Our school participates in the Accelerated Reader program for Grades 2-6.

Most of our collection is labelled according to the reading levels. This will help the students choose books to complete quizzes and earn points, prizes, and fun activities. Quizzes can be taken between the hours of 6:00 am and 9:00 pm. Homeroom teachers will help set personal goals, classroom goals, and also an entire school goal.

Thanks to the generous support from Vermilion Rotary Club and the County of Vermilion River F.C.S.S., we’re excited to once again be able to participate in Roots of Empathy (ROE). This program teaches children about feelings (their own

and those of others). Once every three weeks, baby Logan Zaharko and baby Merit Waltz with their parents will visit the Grade 2 classrooms. Trained ROE instructor, Mrs. Moses, will gather the children in the classroom around a blanket and together they will watch the baby when their ROE baby reaches the developmental milestones of the first year. Mrs. Moses also coaches the children about observing the baby and reading the cues the baby gives as to how the baby is feeling, and then uses this discussion as a

lever for the children to talk about their own emotions and to understand how their classmates feel. For more than ten years across Canada, internationally, and right here at VES, thousands of children are learning respect and care for one another with the lessons started through their Roots of Empathy baby.

Vermilion’s AFSC’s Trip To The Ronald McDonald House

The staff at Agricultural Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) in Vermilion recently had an opportunity to give back to a very worthwhile cause. This is a cause that is dear to their hearts as one their own coworkers has used this facility on numerous occasions, as have many members of our local community; it is the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) in Edmonton.

Prior to the volunteer day, staff had been collecting donations of toys, gift cards and vegetables and on September 19, the AFSC Vermilion Branch headed out to Edmonton with their vehicles brimming with toys and gifts for the residents of the house.

Question is why did the staff of the Vermilion AFSC Branch choose the Ronald McDonald House to give back too?

The Ronald McDonald House may not be in our immediate community but it definitely is a huge help to many members of our small community. We are very fortunate that we have such a wonderful service available to those who are in need. At the Vermilion AFSC office we have many staff members who either have or knows of a family member/ friend/community member that has lived at the house including a current AFSC Vermilion employee who lived in the RMH house for almost six months. So when the opportunity to participate in the Meals That Mend program was presented, as not only a wonderful team building experience but also a way to give back the Vermilion employees, we were more than happy to not only sign up to cook a meal but to also host a Toy Drive to collect donations for the Magic Room at the house.

The afternoon/evening was spent decorating the tables in a harvest theme, filling the house with the smell of fresh baked buns and apple crisp. Staff were laughing, children were laughing and playing outside as they enjoyed the beautiful weather. Staff were personally able to add all the donated toys to the magic room where children and their

siblings are able to pick a toy after a long day your heart with joy! who generously donated toys to the magic at the hospital.

A big thank you to community members room and food for the meal.

Supper was served at 5:30 p.m. and the AFSC staff and families of the RMH house enjoyed the harvest home cooked meal together. The night was wrapped up with leftovers placed in the fridge for those who would be arriving home late with more than enough leftovers packaged up and placed in the freezer for another night’s meal.

Join Us at our Open House ATCO is hosting an open house for the Buffalo Creek Transmission Project A component of Provost to Edgerton and Nilrem to Vermilion Transmission System Reinforcement Project ATCO is proposing a new 144 kV Transmission Line from the existing 7L65 Transmission Line near the Village of Mannville into a new substation, to be known as Drury. A new single circuit 240 kV Transmission Line will be constructed from the Drury Substation to the service territory boundary. AltaLink will complete the Transmission Line Project to Nilrem substation near Hardisty. The Project is to reinforce and upgrade the transmission system capability of the central east sub-region and to ultimately improve capacity in the Lloydminster Area.

Rustlers Rowing Crew Stacked With Potential

(Vermilion, Alta.) – Twenty studentathletes representing the Lake land College Rustlers rowing crew are gearing up for the return of the Head of Vermilion Time Trials, previously known as the Head of Vermilion Regatta.

The first boat launch is at 10:30 a.m. at the Vermilion Provincial Park Reservoir on Saturday, Sept. 28.

“Because this is an unsanctioned event, we’re inviting university rowing, as well as club crews. This event is a great opportunity for people to witness some competition and to see some rowing firsthand,” says Peter Walsh, Rustlers Rowing coach.

Eight y rowers are expected to compete, representing the University of Alberta, University of Calgary and University of Saskatchewan, as well as club crew members from Edmonton, Calgary and Saskatoon.

Hosted by the college and the Lakeland Rowing Club once ever y three years, the three-kilometre head race

includes categories for quads and eig hts. The Rustler s will c om pete against the clock in men’s quads and women’s eights and quads. “ I’m excited about our upcoming rowing season. We have one returning rower, and a great turnout of rookies to fill out the rest of the team,” says

Walsh. “Our competitive season will be done before Thanksgiving because of the positioning of some of the regattas. We don’t have much time to get them up to speed, but the crew is very enthusiastic and they want to be out on the water.”

The Head of Vermilion Time Trials is

the second race of the 2019-20 intercollegiate season for the Rustlers, who will start their season at the Dino Sprints in Calgary, Alta. on Saturday, Sept. 21. The Rustlers rowing crew is the only college team that competes against Western Canadian universities.
