The Vermilion A&W hosted their 11th Annual Burgers to Beat MS event on August 22, raising funds and awareness for the MS Society. Area Manager, Joeven Cartujano said that in Vermilion, they know firsthand what a big difference A&W makes to thousands of Canadians whose lives are touched by the disease. He explained that each year the funds raised at A&W restaurants contribute to world-class research which leads to new discoveries, treatments and insight into the causes of MS. He noted that seven locations in the area including Vermilion participated putting their time and effort into this initiative, and as per A&W executive this year they expect the funds raised in 2019 to help their cumulative total since 2009 top $15 million. “This is a very significant achievement,
and one which exemplifies the way all of us can make a difference individually and collectively contribute to a stronger community and a better future. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who came and ordered teen burgers; as of 3:45 p.m., we already sold 220 teen burgers and from every teen burger sold, $2 will go to MS and counting. We also had our mini A&W merchandise on sale where all the proceeds will go to support the MS Society,” said Cartujano. Programs and services coordinator for the Lloydminster Chapter of the MS Society of Canada, Ann-Dee-Nunweiler attended and was happy to report that last year’s attendee Paradise Valley’s Nicole Mauws who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) at 16 years old, had taken Lemtrada treatments and is doing very well even though it is hard on the system. She went on to say the Mauws is currently
working full-time managing a restaurant in Edmonton. “Ocrevus is the first drug approved this year for progressive MS, and for many people these medications are taken on a trial basis. There are 77,000 Canadians

Local Para Athlete Competing In Para Pan American Games

Jolan Wong nee Brunner who grew up in Vermilion is currently competing in Lima, Peru at the Para Pan American Games that run from August 23 – September 1. She has been playing Sitting Volleyball with the national team for 11 years and so far has competed at two world championships (Oklahoma 2010, Netherlands 2018), two Para Pan American
Games (Toronto 2015, Lima 2019), and was the team captain at one Paralympic Games (Rio 2016). Her training, followed by the trip to Peru has kept Wong busy. In July, she drove from Ontario to Edmonton to train full - time with the National Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team and in addition attended the Vermilion Fair. Wong trained together with her team for three weeks in order to prepare for the Para Pan American Games.

“Our team is ranked 6th in the world after an impressive 7th place finish at the World Championships last summer. Placing ahead of Peru and Brazil will give us a ticket to the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. Our biggest challenge at these games will be placing ahead of Brazil, which is a challenge we are ready to conquer,” said Wong. She went on to say that travelling to games all around the world is something most of her team members have
plenty of experience with and they are really good at adapting to any situation they are faced with. She also noted that being in an athlete’s village full of Para athletes is “beyond inspiring”. “Seeing people overcome and persevere through the cards that they’ve been dealt to represent their country on a world stage is phenomenal. I’m truly honoured to be able to wear the maple leaf while following my passion,” said Wong.

Mannville Golf Course – One Of The Best In Alberta

The Mannville Riverview Golf Course & RV Resort was recently named one of the best in the province in a recent review by Golf Life Alberta’s Ryan O’Neill. “If I was living out in the Mannville area I’m fairly confident I could play that golf course as a member for the rest of my life and never get bored. It’s that good and that much fun to play. Everything was absolutely stunning. This is another course to add to the list of top quality tracks that are out east of Edmonton joining Whitetail and Coal Creek; even with as many balls I blasted
into the Vermillion River. For anyone making a trip out east, it’s just off the Yellowhead and will make for a delightful little golf stop; I highly recommend the visit. Even though we are in the early parts of my great nine hole golf journey, we may already have a lock for a top five candidate for Greatest Nine Hole track in Alberta. It’s courses like this that motivate me even more to journey across the province to find and play these nine hole wonders,” said O’Neill. Thrilled to have such a review, Manager Ken Staden said, “We are having a good season despite the difficult golfing
weather. The course and campsites are probably in the best shape they have ever been in!” He went on to say that the 63-site campground has been getting busier each summer with returning golfers and those just wanting to camp. Last year, the RV Resort received a top four in Alberta award from the RV West golf magazine. “The facility is being utilized for more than just golfing and camping. We have hosted weddings and fundraisers for Mannville Minor Ball and the Mannville Health Care Centre. The number of school and family reunions has increased, and the menu has expanded so the number of
people stopping for food has as well. “Overall, we are satisfied with how the season is going and are thankful for the support. Upcoming Lloydminster Parkinson – Step n’ Stride

The Lloyd minster Region of the Parkinson Association of Alberta will be hosting their 7th Annual Flexxaire Parkinson Step n’ Stride fundraising walk on September 7, at Bud Miller Park. According to the Parkinson Association of Alberta, Parkinson disease is a progressive, neurodegenerative brain disorder for which there is no known cause or cure. Parkinson disease is characterized by both motor and nonmotor symptoms. For over 40 years, the Parkinson Association of Alberta has been, and continues to be, the only charitable organization dedicated to improving the wellbeing and day-today lives of Albertans living with and af fected by Parkinson disease and Parkinson’s Plus Syndromes. They provide no cost specialized support, education, information and resources and low-cost programming to those living with Parkinson disease, their families, care par tners, friends and health care providers across Alberta.
T h ey a l s o a i m t o i n n o v a t e a n d inspire by profiling researchers and clinical trial opportunities, and committing crucial funds for research. One on one / family supportive counselling services offered via in person or by telephone are a confidential and safe place to ask questions, talk about stresses and concerns, establish goals and create action plans to live life to its fullest with Parkinson’s. Attending a support group can be a great way to learn about Parkinson’s, develop better coping skills, and feel less isolated as you make connections with others facing similar challenges. O ther programs address symptom management and physical programs for some clients can possibly slow down the progression of the disease. Clandonald ’s L arr y Garnier was diagnosed with Parkinson’s December 17, 2008 and one of his biggest challenges currently is difficulty walking. He attends the support group in Lloydminster for voice and movement exercises and is hoping is enough people join that they could begin one
in Vermilion. “For Parkinsons people stress is not exactly the best thing, so when the weather limits travel, we aren’t always able to make it. Not only that, Parkinson Disease causes depression and anxiet y, and there is only so much medication that can be taken to maintain a level balance. In addition, there are many trips that have to be taken to the city,” said Lorna Garnier. T h ey a l s o n ote d t h at t h ere i s a boxing group in Lloydminster hoping to start being able to have people with Parkinson’s participate in the future. . The Parkinson Association of Alberta receives no consistent financ ial su p p or t fro m t he g over nm e nt for the ser vices they provide. They rely on fundraising initiatives and the generosity of donors and sponsors to ensure continued suppor t for those they serve. “ Yo u c a n h e l p r a i s e f u n d s a n d awareness for Parkinson disease so that all Albertans have access to the support and services they need to live well with Parkinson’s. Many people
from Vermilion and area travel quite a distance to participate,” said Sherry Bower-Gagne, Client Services Coordinator.

Alberta RCMP Warns Property Owners Of Paving Contractor Scams
Submitted Edmonton - This summer, the Alberta RCMP has received reports of several incidents involving paving scams in Western Alberta. Travelling companies, posing as legitimate contractors, offer paving or sometimes roof sealing services typically to senior citizens in rural communities. These individuals have been known to provide few details of their identity and utilize non-descript vehicles rarely bearing commercial logos. T h e A l b er t a RC M P ur g e s pro p erty owners to beware of out-of-town companies of fering such ser vices. The contractors claim to have leftover asphalt from previous jobs and promise to provide quality services. However, the product used is believed to be cold, recycled asphalt or a gravel and oil mixture with no lasting properties. This results in the asphalt falling apart once it is driven on. By that time, these fraudsters are long gone, disappearing with their payment before the customer realizes they have been scammed. We would like to remind residents to exercise caution when retaining contractor services and if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Residents should be weary of any contractors who: • Come to your door saying they are working in the area offering a deal for leftover asphalt • Drive vehicles bearing no business names or logos • Pressure you into making a quick decision or refuse to take “no” for an answer • Ask for a down payment to buy
materials • Refuse to give you a written quote with their business name, physical address and outlining the services they will provide prior to completing the work Here a few tips to avoid falling prey to scammers: • Before agreeing to contract a person who comes to your door, get names of their previous customers and verify that they were satisfied with the work • Do some research on the company with either the Bet ter Business Bureau in Alberta, with the Consumer Investigations Unit, with your local Rural Crime Watch or on social media site • Make sure to obtain a written quote from the contractor that includes the full business name, full address, phone number, GST number and provincial and municipal license numbers, if applicable • Ensure the quote you receive gives details such as the quantity and specifies the quality of materials being offered • Obtain quotes from local supplier as a form of comparison The Alberta RCMP is working with the Alberta Consumer Investigation Unit (CIU) to counter this trend. Last year I discovered that I could spiralize zucchini and add a parsley pesto for a delicious and fresh dish. Parsley is more than a pretty garnish on your food, it is also a super healthy green packed with lots of anti-oxidants. Parsley contains 574 percent of our vitamin K, which helps to strengthen our bones and protect the brain. Parsley contains three times the vitamin C of oranges, and 47 percent of our daily vitamin A, known for eye health. Parsley contains twice as much iron as spinach, and significant folate. So, yes eat the parsley on your plate because

science has discovered that compounds in parsley have a role in inhibiting the formation of tumors. Pesto is a historically Italian dish that is served on pasta. A pesto made of fresh basil is a common recipe in Italy. Pesto can also be made out of other herbs. In our area, large bunches of fresh basil are not always readily available, but parsley is. The chopped parsley in this recipe can also be substituted for a mixture of spinach, parsley and basil or dill. I made this pesto with parsley and stirred it into brown rice elbow macaroni and it was very good. You can stir it into any pasta of your choosing or spiralized zucchini noodles. Parsley Pesto ser ves 2- 4 1 cup chopped parsley 2 Tablespoons nuts (almonds, walnuts or pine nuts) 3 Tablespoons Parmesan cheese 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind 1/4 teaspoon sea salt 4 tablespoons olive oil. Combine all the ingredients in a small food processer until
finely chopped, add the olive oil and them process for 10 -20 seconds more. It can be stirred into your choice of pasta, or spread on potatoes, crackers or toast. The recipe can be easily doubled for a larger family size. Chocolate zucchini cake is very moist and delicious. It is always a favourite when fresh zucchini in season. I remember the first time I tasted a chocolate zucchini cake, and what a surprise it was to have a cake that had such a moist rich texture. The fat in the cake is minimal, and is from healthy olive oil which has beneficial nutrients. You could also use canola oil for all or part of the fat. I have done this recipe with as little as 7/8 cup of sugar and it is fine, but for those that like their cake a little sweeter the 1 and a quarter cups of sugar will suit you better, and provides lots of sweetness. Chocolate Zucchini Cake 1/2 cup olive oil 1 1/4 cups sugar

Add the cup of water and the coffee. You can also use 1 cup of coffee instead of the water and instant coffee. In a separate bowl add all the dry ingredients and mix well. Add the dry ingredients to the liquid. I use a held mixer for all of it except the zucchini which I stir in at the end. Bake in a lightly greased 9 x 13 inch metal pan for 40 minutes at 325 degrees. Finish with a chocolate buttercream icing or a chocolate cream cheese icing.

The Cree named many of the places in the area, and probably told Henday the name for the coulee was Grizzly Bear. It could be said that while there are no bears in the area now, there may have been some back then, hence the name. The name would continue over the centuries, to the telegraph station, to the coulee and to the local improvement district that was established on Feb. 22, 1913. The Grizzly Bear Station would operate until 1884 when it was abandoned. The Eleanor was established that same year. The Eleanor station was in use as a line repairers’ headquarters until the telegraph line itself was abandoned in 1886. S. McFarlane was the operator and repairer stationed at the telegraph office for the two years of its operation before it was shut down. The line itself would be replaced in 1887 with a new one north of the river. Today the Grizzly Bear Telegraph Station is a provincial heritage site. Suggestions for columns or questions? for a few hundred yards across Grizzly Bear Creek. The station itself was located just above this creek crossing. Built in 1876, it was also the home of the Robert McKernan family for several years before they moved to what would become Strathcona in Edmonton in 1880. In an issue of the Saskatchewan Herald, published on Aug. 25, 1878, it was announced that the station would in the future be the winter station for the CP Telegraph. In the article, it stated, “As yet, the wolves and coyotes howl their dreary requiems around the vast solitude while an occasional grizzly comes out from his lair to see if the white man has yet invaded his gulch.” The article also stated that buffalo were abundant in the location of the telegraph, and that the tract of country was well-watered and timbered around the station. The buffalo were so abundant around the station that repairmen would see them rubbing poles down and dragging wire across the prairie with their horns. Going back a little, how did the Grizzly Bear area get its name? There does not seem to be an abundance of grizzly bears in the area today. Back on Sept. 17, 1754, Anthony Henday was traveling with a band of Cree through the area when he came to a point a few miles south of where Grizwide version zly Bear Coulee runs into the Battle River.

Announcement Of Veterans Policy: Standing Behind The Men And Women Who Sacrificed For Our Country

O n August 18, 2019, at the fir st National Convention of the People’s Pa r t y o f C a n a d a (G a t i n e a u , Q C) the PPC announ c ed the poli cy on programs affecting our Veterans for the October 2019 federal election. This policy was created by veterans for veterans. Forty-four veterans (PPC Candidates or Executives) stood in front of the stage to bring Canadians and veterans a plan that actually recognizes the sacrifices all our brave men and women have given to our country. Facts U n t i l 2 0 0 6 , ve te r a n s i n j u r e d o r disabled during militar y ser vice received a tax-free lifetime disability pension under the Pension Act, as determined by a veteran’s disability assessment, including suppor t and sur vivor benefits for s p ouses and dependent children. On April 1, 2006, the New Veterans
Charter replaced those pensions with a one-time lump sum disability payout that is wholly inad equate, leaving many injured and disabled veterans in dire financial straits. It created two classes of veterans. Unfortunately, successive Liberal and Conservative governments have largely chosen to forget this proud history. They have star ved our military forces of funds, equipment and support, and broken their trust with those who made an exceptional personal commitment to put life and limb at risk in the interests of the nation. Our plan A People’s Party government will: Recognize and respect the unique sacrifices of those who serve and have served in Canada’s Armed Forces. Enshrine in legislation the country’s obligations to our veterans in a Militar y Covenant between the governm e nt a n d t h o s e w h o s er ve i n t h e Armed Forces.

Nancy Feenstra passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at the age of 89 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Rose (John) Travers, of Airdrie, AB, Brenda Dudley, of Magrath, AB, Shirley (Bob) Angevine, of Kelowna, BC, Jane (Robert) Anderson, of Airdrie, AB, Tys (Tammy) Feenstra, of Vermilion, AB and Tina (Jeff ) Wraight, of Camrose, AB; 23 grandchildren; 66 great grandchildren; sisters Loraine (Jim) Cromarty, Mickey Moore, Fay Moore and Alice Alexander; brothers Richard (Joyce) Moore, Calvin (Elaine) Hough, Morley (Merle) Hough and Keith (Pam) Moore; and many more family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Harmen Feenstra and brothers Ed Moore, Ken Hough, Bert Hough and Stan Hough. Nancy was born in High River, AB and then after some time in Mound, AB and Edmonton, AB she ended up in Vermilion, AB. At 17 she met Harmen and they were married a year later and then were blessed with their six children while on the farm near Vermilion. Nancy was a social person and enjoyed helping others. She volunteered her time with her church, in the community, with the local 4H and in the schools. She was always looking after those that were in need. Education was very important to Nancy. Although she was unable to get her High School Diploma in her younger years, she was very proud of receiving it in her 50's. She loved her family and would do anything she could to bring them together. She also enjoyed sewing, needlework, gardening, playing cards and traveling and was a brilliant seamstress. A Celebration of Life and Family Dinner will be held for Nancy at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints-Main Street Chapel (1504 Main Street, Airdrie) on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 4:00 pm. A Graveside Service will then be held at the Vermilion Public Cemetery (Vermilion, AB) on Monday, August 26, 2019 at 11:00 am. A Celebration of life "The Sequel" will then be held at the Vermilion Seniors Center (5324 50 Ave, Vermilion) on Monday, August 26, 2019 at 12:00 pm. Mudryk, Zenovia, born July 12, 1935 in Elk Point to Rosie and Isaac Lypka. Passed away peacefully on June 28, 2019 in the Royal Alexander Hospital in Edmonton, with her children and grandchildren by her side. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, David (Joan), Daryel, Pauline (Frank), Jack (Shauna) and Charlene (Larry). Grandchildren, Shawn (Kalida), Ryan (Raquel), Joshua and Jordan, Chase and Brenna. Great Grandchildren, Jase and Bohdan, Kaius, Brodie and Rhett Mudryk. As well as siblings, numerous nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. Zenovia was predeceased by her Husband Paul. She was an amazing Wife, Mother, Baba and Great Baba who worked hard all her life, enjoyed cooking, music, cake decorating, crafting and loved her family so. She was an accomplished Chef and was president of St. Olga’s parish for the last 5 years, interparish secretary for 30 years and a dedicated church member for her lifetime. We wish to thank Fr. Mark Bombak and Fr. Slavco Dumec, the cantors Kim Bombak and St. Olga’s Choir, helpers Bill Poliakiwski, Brenna McFarlane, Debbie Lypka and Patricia Zittlau & the pallbearers, to Sharon Jaremco for the dinner, the phone calls, visits, sympathy cards, food and flowers and your donations. Thank you to those who came to visit Mom before her passing was appreciated and will be remembered. There is a tradition that a new administration’s first 100 days in office are reviewed and critiqued. I think this is a practice with much merit and so I offer to you my perspective on the UCPs first 100 days in office. The UCP platform was wide ranging and contained many specific promises. Getting Albertans back to work. 2. Making life better for Albertans. 3. Standing up for Alberta. I am proud to say that that we have been relentless in our efforts to fulfill these promises. Rome wasn’t built in a day but our Leader, Jason Kenney, recalled the Legislature to a special Summer sitting – the Summer of Repeal – in order to begin lay the foundations. In just 10 weeks we passed 13 Bills focused primarily on our first aim, axiomatically contributing to the second. Aim three is a longer-term activity requiring intergovernmental action. However, on this front I’m pleased to report that the UCP Energy War Room has been set up and that I am a member of the Energy Caucus. This group will be taking up the gauntlet and Standing up for Alberta. Getting Albertans back to work was
squarely addressed by Bill 1, the repeal of the Carbon Tax. It cut costs for businesses affording them the opportunity to expand and hire. Jobs and salaries are good for people. Already employed Albertans saw money stay in their pockets via lower energy bills. Bill 2, An Act to make Alberta Open for Business, reformed many stifling employment standards and labour relation laws, again encouraging growth and prosperity. Bill 4, The Red Tape Reduction Act, immediately cut 17 regulations and presented businesses and government departments the opportunity to get leaner, more efficient and grow. Bill 13, The Royalty Guarantee Act, offered stability to the energy sector and thus the confidence to begin investing once more. The most controversial Bill was Bill 8, The Education Amendment Act. They say you know you are over the target when the flak is heaviest. We spent 8 days, and 7 nights, in debate. The Jesuits coined the saying “give us the child and we will give you the man”. The reaction of the opposition to this Bill, which merely prioritised parental authority and allowed parents wider choice in education, was quite revealing. As part of the new cohort of MLAs I found the overall experience variously exhilarating, bewildering, frustrating, fascinating but, ultimately, very fulfilling. Fulfilling because what I believe in, and campaigned for, saving taxpayers money,
cutting red tape and putting parents and children before state diktat were all becoming a reality. As an aside you might be interested to know that I am a member of the following committees: • Public Accounts. • Alberta Economic Future. • Premier’s Council on the Status of Parsons with Disabilities. Committees perform much of the leg work required to get Bills tabled and general administrative acts carried out timely and effectively. Since the end of the Summer of Repeal Session I’ve had the chance to return home full time and get out into the riding. I’ve had a full diary attending many of the traditional summer events e.g. Graduation ceremonies, fairs and rodeos. I’ve also attended important meetings on topics important not just to individuals but to constituents as a whole e.g. Level 4 care for Seniors, AHS operation wait times, flooding issues and Grandparental Rights, to name but four. We’ve also had two Ministerial visits to the riding. I really enjoy meeting constituents and I appreciate the candour and openness of our discussions; it keeps me grounded and informed. I’m delighted to be representing you in the Legislature, I’m very happy to be a member of these committees and I’m proud that, as a party, we are keeping our promises and making Alberta a better place to live work and raise a family.

Rock’in Wellness And Spreading Magic Comes To Nunavik!
Infulencers Motivating Influencers Submitted
Vermilion, Alberta - A spark of magic, a splash of art, and tunes of triumph are all set to inspire over 14 northern communities this fall. The team from Influencers Motivating Influencers will be setting out to create and inspire positive change in the Nunavik Region of Northern Quebec from September 2 through October 25, 2019. Influencers Motivating Influencers (IMI) has been offering suicide prevention, wellness and anti-bullying tours in remote northern communities for 7 years. “We have a strong, diverse group of multi-talented people, so we can tailor workshops based on community needs.” explains IMI founder and tour producer, Dave DeVos. According to Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, 2018 Inuit Statistical Profile, the rates of suicide in Inuit Nunangat are 5 to 25 times higher than in the rest of Canada. IMI are actively seeking funding partners across the country to not only continue the

work they are doing, but to grow to serve new communities. For towns, schools, Indigenous groups, or anyone interested in hosting they should contact influencersmotivate@gmail.com. Magician and International Illusionist, Brian Glow, has packed an unbelievable, Antibullying show into a single suitcase. Brian uses comedy and magic to share personal experiences of being bullied, mesmerizing audiences while delivering his positive message. Elberlyn Gerritsen Hill stands with “those pushing forward despite adversity.” This Kanien’keha, French Canadian and Dutch singer, songwriter, and artist has confidence and warmth. Watch for Elberlyn’s performance on stage and her Supporting Our Sisters art and wellness workshops. William Komaksiutiksak aka rapper “Northern Knowledge” from Rankin Inlet relocated to Ottawa and immersed himself in spreading positive messages through
his music. Last year William’s creative altruism landed him the RBC Spirit of the Capitol Youth Award. “Music saved my life and changed my mindset,” explains William who has personal experiences dealing with his own Mental Wellness. “Healing comes through conversation and connection,” adds DeVos, “We’re not doctors but we can share our own struggles while uplifting through our creative skills and help to find avenues for hope and change where it’s needed most.” The Kativik Regional Government has sponsored this tour which will host, The Grizzlies Movie screening in addition to art, music, magic workshops and performances and much more! A big thank you goes out to First Air, Air Inuit and La Federation des Cooperatives du NouveauQuebec who are also partnering to bring these artistic wellness opportunities to Nunavik. Reminder: School Bus Season Is Upon Us

With the school year about to start back up, the Canada Safety Council would like to take this opportunity to remind motorists across Canada to adjust their driving habits accordingly. “Patience, extra attentiveness and situational knowledge go a long way toward keeping our roads safe for everyone,” said Gareth Jones, president of the Canada Safety Council. “It’s our responsibility as conscientious road users to make sure that nobody is unnecessarily put in harm’s way.” School Bus Safety Tips Especially in the context of young children, it’s not always easy to predict
their behaviours. A child who is running to catch their bus may dart out in traffic unexpectedly, which makes defensive driving absolutely crucial. Drive at an appropriate speed, be aware of the child’s presence and be prepared to stop suddenly. The same holds true for school buses themselves. It is against the law to pass a school bus when its red signal lights are flashing. This is true regardless of the direction in which you are coming, although exception is made for oncoming traffic on a median-divided highway. If you notice a school bus approaching, do a quick scan of the area to see if there are any children waiting nearby, and be prepared to stop if the bus’ signal lights
come on. A school bus is also required to stop at all railway crossings, so be on the lookout for these and prepare accordingly. Other Modes of Transportation Transportation of children by school bus is one of the most effective and safest methods of travel, but many students take an alternate mode of transit. Whether they’re arriving to school by bicycle, by foot, by public transportation or by being driven in a family vehicle, patience and vigilance continue to be essential. Be mindful of the potential for an increased presence of vulnerable road users, especially at crosswalks, on the roadways and in school zones. By being
aware of your surroundings, you allow yourself the necessary time to react if they behave unpredictably. As with most road safety-related topics, it’s through patience and constant attention to our surroundings that we’re best able to do our part in keeping roads safe across the country. Remember to do your part and help children arrive to school safe and sound.

When Are Children Old Enough To Walk Home From School Alone? According to psychologists, children as young as nine years old can walk home alone from school. As long as they have the cognitive ability needed to cross the street safely and there’s a responsible adult waiting at home, entrusting kids to commute on their own will have positive results. As a parent, however, it’s up to you to determine whether your children have the maturity needed to make the commute without adult supervision. Start by talking to them. Do they seem excited by the prospect? If they appear worried or reticent,
they may not be ready.
THINGS TO CONSIDER
Even if your kids seem mature enough, there are some things to think about before sending them out on their own. • Are there laws in your area that dictate when children can commute to school on their own? • How close is the school? • Are there busy or dangerous streets on the way? • Are your kids familiar with pedestrian safety rules? Do they respect these rules when they walk with you?
• Are there crossing guards in the area? If the school is very close to your home, you’ll likely feel more comfortable letting them walk on their own. You can also talk to other parents who live nearby to see if their kids and yours can make the trip together.
TAKE IT SLOW
When first letting your children walk to school on their own, it’s a good idea to start with a trial period. For example, your kids could begin by coming home alone one day a week. Ask them how it went. If they like it, you can add another day each week.

Tasty Ways To Make Legumes A Lunchbox Staple Legumes such as chickpeas, lentils and beans are a great source of essential minerals, fibre and protein. However, they’re not always popular with kids, so you may need to get a little creative in the kitchen. Here are some ideas for incorporating them in meals, snacks and even desserts.
SNACKS
Hummus and crackers are a classic lunchbox snack. Additionally, you can mix puréed legumes with plain yogurt to make a savoury dip for carrot sticks and other veggies. Another way to nosh on legumes is to roast them. Season chickpeas or edamame beans and then cook them in the oven for a crunchier snack that may become as coveted as potato chips.
MEALS
If your kids don’t like legume salads or lentil soup, you can add navy beans to stews, chickpeas to couscous and kidney beans to white rice. You can also replace some or all of the meat in spaghetti sauce with lentils or make a legume-infused chili.
DESSERTS
A great way to make desserts healthier is to substitute a bean purée for some of the ingredients. Puréed black beans make great brownies, for instance. Thanks to their subtle taste, your kids won’t even notice they’re in there. With a little creativity, you can make legumes a staple of your children’s diet. With the huge variety available, there’s almost an endless array of possibilities.

The City of Lloydminster announced t h at t h e PW M A A A S te e l er s were names the host city of the 2021 Esso Cup at the Centennial Civic Centre on August 22. It i s n ot t h e c i t y ’s fir s t n at i o n a l hockey event, but it will be the first time Lloydminster is hosting the national women’s midget ice hockey club championship, and the first time that the Steelers are attending. During the 2018/2019 Alberta Female Hockey League season, the PWM AAA Steel-
ers held a record of 39-13-1, placed s e c o n d i n t h e i r l e ag u e, e a r n e d a b r o nze m e d a l at p r ov i n c i a l s , a n d finished first in two-of-three showcase tournaments. Co-chair of the local host organizing committee, Ryan Sklapsky, noted that Lloydminster’s support for elite female hockey is widely recognized and they are excited for the athletes that will make up the Lloydminster Steelers roster for the 2020-21 hockey season as they will have the chance to compete for a national championship. The Midget program began in 2004 and the Steelers have since been continuing to develop elite players that move on to the ACAC, U SPORTS and NCAA programs. According to Hockey Canada, the event is expected to boost the city’s economy and in addition, they state that net proceeds from all ticket sales,

sponsorship and grants at the event will stay within Lloydminster to help support the growth and development of the game at the grassroots level. “Hosting an event of this scale will provide our communit y an exciting opportunity to showcase our commitment to volunteerism and sport. The Lloydminster Steelers play a pivotal role in the growth and development of female athletes within Alberta and it will be our shared privilege to stand with them in welcoming the nation’s top-performing female hockey players as they look to achieve personal goals and compete for the 2021 Esso Cup right here in our city,” said Mayor Gerald Aalbers.

Take Part In The SIAL Canada Trade Mission

Alberta food and beverage companies interested in exporting may consider this trade mission to Montreal, April 14 – 18, 2020. Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF) is looking to lead a trade mission to SIAL Canada. It is the nation’s only food show dedicated to the retail and food service trade and is one of North America’s most important agri-food sector tradeshows. SIAL Canada is now the only event of its scale in Canada, with more than 1,000 national and international exhibitors from 50 countries hosting over 18,500 buyers from Canada, the United States and 60 other countries.
SIAL Canada provides an excellent opportunity for Alberta companies to continue their exposure amongst North American and international buyers. Companies will also be able to participate in events and conferences to discover the latest trends and issues in the sector. This four-day program may include: • Business-to-business matchmaking session for participating companies. • Exhibition at SIAL Canada in a shared booth space within the Western Canadian Pavilion. Eligibility To be eligible to participate in this mission you must be an Alberta company that is export-ready and determined to enter new export markets or channels.
Eligible Expenses Companies may be eligible for a grant to help offset travel costs through The Canadian Agricultural Partnership program under Products to Market – Stream B. Staying Active With Arthritis
(NC) If you’re living with the daily stiffness and pain of arthritis, exercising is probably the last thing you feel like doing. But experts say staying physically active is important for joint and overall health. “Many people think the best way to treat arthritis pain is to rest, however the opposite is true,” explains Anthony Harper, a Canadian certified pedorthist and president of the Pedorthic Association of Canada. “If you don’t exercise, your joints will become stiffer and even more painful as the muscles supporting your bones’ functional movement will grow weaker, placing more stress on your joints. Staying physically active will reduce joint pain, increase strength and flexibility, boost energy levels, improve sleep, and help you maintain a healthy weight.” Harper says an exercise regimen that includes range of motion, strength and
endurance activities is best for your joint health. Walking, dancing, running, golf, tennis, biking, swimming, aerobics, yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi are all good choices. Harper provides the following tips: Ease into it. Although everyone beginning an exercise program or increasing their physical activity should increase their activity levels gradually, individuals with arthritis should take extra time. Add five to 10 minutes of activity everyday and monitor your body closely. Always warm up. Dynamic stretching before you work out is very important if you have arthritis as it helps lubricate your joints and increases blood flow and muscle temperature. Static stretching should be reserved for post exercise as this can damage cold muscles. Know when to slow down. If one of your joints is very painful before you start
exercising, switch to a different activity that doesn’t put stress on the painful joint. However, if you experience severe pain while working out stop immediately and consult your health-care provider. Consult an exper t. Comfor table, activity-specific, properly fitted shoes are essential to helping you stay injuryfree. Book a consultation with a Canadian certified pedorthist to determine which footwear is best for your foot type, biomechanics, arthritic condition and activity of choice.
