Many enjoyed the exhibit hall, bingo and watermelon eating contest as well as a pie eating contest, face painting tractor pedal pushers, and mutton busting. Returning and new visitors from the region enjoyed attending including those from Vermilion, Kitscoty, and Lloydminster.

YSS Cannabis retail location opened their doors for business in Vermilion at 4121 - 51 Street on August 8.

Vice President of Operations, Tony Balakas said, “We have product that suits everyone; from people that have never tried it to very high potency, top-shelf oils and flower.”

Currently they offer cannabis in dried flower or pre-rolled joints, as well as cannabis oil in pure CBD oil or capsule form. Their pre-rolled joints come in various pack sizes, and they also carry consumption methods including pipes, bongs, vaporizers and one-hitters. YSS looks forward to December when they will be able to offer edibles, extracts, and vape pens. Customers can explore tablets and speak to staff about what products are a good fit for them.

They plan to continue hosting different information sessions in the future and Balakas added, “We want to give back to the communities that we are in. We love this town so far; all of the people seem super welcoming!”

The Vermilion-Lloydminster-Wainwright Constituency hosted the Alberta Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, the Honourable Devin Dreeshen, at the Vermilion Agricultural Society on August 9.

MLA Garth Rowswell was thrilled to host area producers and Minister Dreeshen as part of his tour around the province seeking input to the new Farm Freedom & Safety Act.

“The turnout was perfect! I liked the seriousness and quality of individuals that were here. Overall we saw really good representation from throughout the constituency including participants from Lloydminster, Kitscoty, Streamstown, Vermilion, Irma, and Wainwright. We are also thankful to Minister Dreeshen for making a special effort to attend.

One of the big issues is occupational health and safety, and going forward people want an educational component so that they know what things they will

have to do to comply. Farmers want to be safe, but they want the regulations to be something they can comply with and match other jurisdictions,” said MLA Garth Rowswell.

Local producer, Brent Fischer runs a mixed grain and cattle operation near Irma. He was eager to attend partly to hear the United Conservative Party’s plans for dealing with the previous government’s Bill 6 and partly to voice his opinion.

Minister Dreeshen noted that in 2015, the previous government did not consult farmers and said, “We wanted to consult first and legislate second. People are very supportive of the process and it is being well received by farmers because ultimately, they will be the ones affected.

Whatever happens at the end of the day, we want a policy that it is proactive and can help prevent workplace incidents instead of looking back and getting people in trouble for not following regulations.”

He went on to say that two reoccurring themes heard around the province

Co-op Liquor Store - Now Open

Cornerstone Co-op opened their fourth liquor store in Vermilion on July 25. Other locations exist in St. Paul, Elk Point, and Wainwright.

“We are happy to have the opportunity to provide employment and continue a service in the community that was going to be closing,” said Director of Operations, Kory Kralkay.

They look forward to offering more locally supplied product as well as

samples from their Growler craft beer bar.

“Every craft beer we offer is from Alberta and is not something you can get in six packs. Some of our liqueurs include product from a past CFL player from Viking area, as well as other local and area product from Cold Lake, Red Deer, and Innisfail,” said Manager, Thomas Knowles.

The kegs are kept cold and customers can sample their choice ale and IPA selections and purchase 1L or 2L reusable containers.

“The craft beer

market is a growing commodity. Co-op label beers are brewed by Big Rock brewery in Calgary and our Co-op spirits (rum, rye, gin, etc.) are bottled by Minhas distillery which is a Calgary-owned company as well,” said Kory Kralkay.

They plan to host a grand opening in mid September, and look forward to serving the community over the coming months. Exciting opportunities available exclusively at Cornerstone Co-op Liquor Store will include a wine club with monthly wine tastings where participants will learn product knowledge, and go over pairings

with grocery items beginning this fall.

“Sometimes it depends on what you feel like,” said Knowles who has taken two wine certification courses and has been working in the industry for over 25 years.

His experience leads him to look for rated product for an affordable price. They plan to offer a boutique style that may not be found in other locations, and they look forward to supporting local community charity events in the future.

Many participants enjoyed grooming and showing their sheep and goats in the ring and assisted each other during and behind the scenes.

Now that August is halfway through, and September is approaching, the cooler air of this week reminds me that Fall is on the way and so is harvest time.

This week the Voice and businesses of the area are taking the time to salute our agricultural community.

This summer the weather has been

somewhat yucky, and honestly it doesn’t even feel like we had summer at all, but as I look around at the fields it does appear as though the crops are growing quite well. I am hopeful the farmers will have a good harvest this year. I have heard through the grapevine that with the sporadic hail, heavy rains and wind that some crops have been pretty much destroyed, which would be a real shame. It always seems like each year Mother Nature is giving them the rotten end of the stick, and to put the icing on the cake they now have to contend

with the ban China has imposed on Canadian canola. It has to be a heavy blow as China impor ted roughly $4 billion worth of the oilseed crop from Canada, according to an analysis from the Canada West Foundation.

It’s not just the grain farmers that have to deal with the bad side of farming, the ranchers have it tough as well as they work in one of the most dangerous professions in Canada. We sometimes hear of ranchers and helpers getting ran over or kicked by one of the herd or how they have lost body parts

due to accidents. I wouldn’t choose the farming lifestyle but I am awful glad they have the courage and heart to do it, as I would be starving without them; so I tip my hat to all the farmers in our community and surrounding communities.

The Voice staff would like to take this time to thank all the farmers and ranchers for the hard work they do and recognize the dangers in which they face every day. Take the time to say thank you; it’s a small word that carries much respect.

Black Bean And Quinoa Salad

Here is another healthy salad recipe to add to your collection.

Quinoa is pronounced (Keen-wah). Although quinoa is similar to a grain is not a true cereal grain. It is a member of the same family as spinach, beets and Swiss chard. The quinoa seed has been farmed in South America for over 5000 years. It was a staple for the Inca civilization, who believed quinoa increased their stamina. Quinoa is currently grown in both northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Quinoa is a seed that has no gluten and is high in protein. The protein found in quinoa is a complete protein that contains all the essential amino acids. This is not true for other grains. Quinoa is a high fiber food that has twice as much fiber as many other grains. The health benefits of high fiber include lowering blood pressure, lowering bad cholesterol and aiding in regulating blood sugar. Quinoa contains iron, lysine, tryptophan, magnesium,

folate, manganese, riboflavin and calcium.

The antioxidant phytonutrients quercetin and kaempferol among many others are found in higher amounts in quinoa that in certain berries such as cranberries that are considered excellent sources. Many of the nutrients in quinoa have anti inflammatory properties. The quinoa seed contains heart healthy fats such as monosaturated fat in the form of oleic acid and omega 3 alpha linolenic acid. If also contains many forms of the vitamin E family to further protect our cells from oxidative damage.

Quinoa can be purchased in bulk at most health food stores and some grocery stores. The seeds are covered with saponins, which contain phyto nutrients, however the saponins are bitter. To remove the bitter taste, place the quinoa in a bowl, add water and rub the seeds together, drain and then repeat. Quinoa can be eaten as breakfast porridge or in place of rice. Cooked quinoa can be added to salads or made into a pudding, much the same way as rice pudding. The seeds can be added to soups and stews. Quinoa has an agreeable taste and is noted for being

easy to digest. You may want to give this ancient super food a try and celebrate all of its benefits.

Each and every ingredient in this salad has its own list of health benefits. One of the greatest benefits is the absence of the additives chemicals and junk oils found in most salad dressings. Red peppers and limes are high in vitamin C. Beans are a staple of many of the longest living healthy people on the planet and black beans contain unique antioxidants. Black Bean and Quinoa Salad 1 cup quinoa

1 1/2 cups water 1 can black beans 1 red pepper, diced 1/4 cup red or yellow onion diced 3/4 cup green onion tops Dressing 1 lime juiced 2 tablespoons of virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon maple syrup (or honey) 1 teaspoon cumin 1 clove of garlic pressed (or very finely cut) 1 teaspoon sea salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper Wash the quinoa by covering it in water and rubbing, drain off the water and then repeat the process. Cook the quinoa in the 1 1/2 cups of water until tender, about 15 minutes. Allow to cool. Drain and rinse the beans. In a bowl combine the quinoa, beans, red pepper, onions. In another small bowl or glass combine the dressing ingredients. Pour the dressing onto the salad and toss. It is often better, when the ingredients have had at least an hour to blend, in the refrigerator.

The Depression Hits The MD Of Streamstown

In existence s i n c e 1912 , t h e Municipal District of Streamstown, the district would hit hard times like many other districts during The Great Depression.

At the dawn of The Great Depression in 1929, council had begun to discuss the problem of weeds in the area, and a special picnic was held on June 28 where the problem of weeds would be discussed. Within a short few months, weeds would be the last thing on many minds in the area.

For the nex t several year s, The Great Depression would cause many

in the area to nearly lose their farms as crop prices fell to rock bottom and drought dried up the land. As was the case in many districts, neighbours helped each other to get through these tough times. The council of the district also did what it could to aid farmers and their families.

On April 17, 1937, council took in 104 applications for seed grain relief, which amounted to $10,750, which is $192,792 in today’s funds. Unfortu n ate l y, c o u n c i l o n l y h ad $7, 5 0 0 ($134,000 in today’s funds) approved through their bylaw. To remedy this, c o u n c i l p a s s e d a n o t h e r b y l aw t o approve $2,500 extra with permission from the Department of Agriculture.

The department approved the request.

At that same meeting, 28 applications

for feed relief came in and council approved $1,000 to help those farmers who could not afford feed for their livestock.

In June of 1937, the council was still able to make its payments to 24 school districts, helping the schools remain open and as a place not only for children to learn but for people to gather for events during these tough years.

In 1938, grasshoppers continued to be a serious problem for farmers in the area. To remedy this, the government established a grasshopper baitmixing station in Blackfoot, with Streamstown cooperating.

When the Second World War began, things began to improve as crop prices rose and the drought came to an end.

With a new issue on the world stage,

the Streamstown council once again did what they could to help, this time on the national stage. On Aug. 8, 1940, while the battle of Britain was raging, council passed a motion to offer assistance any way possible in the national registration being held on Aug. 19, 20 and 21. The secretary of the district was also asked to communicate with the Dominion Registrar to see if there was anything they could do to help.

Stop The Presses - Canadian Newspaper Readership At An All Time High

Seventh annual Newspaper 24/7 Report confirms that 88 per cent of Canadian read newspapers every week - the highest number since the study began in 2012.

In the midst of continued discussion and debate about the state of Canadian media, the seventh annual Newspapers 24/7 Report (an annual benchmark of Canadian newspaper readership conducted by Totum Research on behalf of News Media Canada) found that readership of Canadian newspapers is at an all-time high. According to the survey, which was conducted in February of this year, 88% of Canadians read a newspa-

per, in either print or digital format, at least once a week—a three per cent increase from the inaugural study, which was conducted in 2012.

“Given heightened levels of global mistrust, we’re seeing a clear and continued affinity for the reliable reporting that newspapers provide,” said Bob Cox, Chair, News Media Canada. “Newspapers continue to be the go-to source for credible, trusted and independent news, in both print and digital formats.”

Unsurprisingly, digital newspaper readership continues to increase year-overyear: the 2019 report found that 83% of newspaper readers are accessing at least some of their newspaper content

online. Interestingly, however, the majority of these readers are using that digital content to supplement—not replace— readership of a print edition of the newspaper. In total, 52% of newspaper readers access newspaper content from both print and online sources.

“This year’s research clearly demonstrates that both print and digital newspaper sources play a unique and distinct role in the lives of Canadians,” said Claude Heimann, President, Totum Research.

“For example, it’s clear that people like to start their day with the comprehensive and in-depth reporting of a print newspaper, and then stay up-to-date on breaking news on digital as the day progresses.

The report confirms that most print reading happens early in the day, while digital reading is more consistent from morning to night.

Finally, the research specifically looked at the newspaper reading habits of younger Canadians. And while Millennials have been blamed for the death of everything from mayonnaise to department stores, newspapers appear to have avoided that curse: 88% of Millennials read newspapers weekly, accessing newspaper content primarily through their mobile phones.

The Village of Mannville will be a bustle of activity as the Mannville Agriculture Society hosts their annual fair on August 17. “ T h e M a n n v i l l e Fa i r i s a g r e a t small town event that everyone in the community looks forward to. It is a time for community members of all ages to get together for the parade, showcase their work in the bench show and enjoy some entertainment. For a small town, we have many talented people, and we enjoy coming together and sharing one another’s successes,” said Erin Hinton.

Throughout the day the events will include family favourites such as the parade, tractor show, a magic show with Sprinkles the clown, a greased pig contest! “ It is a low cost, fun way for the whole family to enjoy a day. My favourite part of the fair is watching our small community come together, young and old for a day of fun! The theme this year is ‘Making Communities Better For 100 Years & Beyond!” said Hinton.

The UFA Rural Communities Foundation Announces Five-Year, $500,000 Commitment

Submitted Rural Communities Encouraged to Apply for up to $100,000 in Funds Calgary – Tuesday, July 2, 2019: United Farmers of Alberta Co-operative Ltd. (“UFA”) announced today that the Rural Communities Foundation (“RCF”) is making a financial commitment of $500,000 over the next five years to rural communities across its network.

The mandate of the RCF is to improve the sustainability of farmers and ranchers in Alberta by improving access to funding for educational, recreational and cultural facili-

ties and programs in those communities.

“The Foundation was created in 2014, through the support of UFA’s elected officials, to give back the archived equity collected by the Co-operative,” explains RCF Board Chair Har vey Hagman.

“Through the formation of this Foundation, we are now able to give these monies back to those UFA communities. We’re pleased to announce today that RCF will award applications from a minimum of $10,000, up to a total of $100,000 this year.”

Hagman says that applications will be accepted from July 2 until August 31, 2019.

Wehrle says that there are some other benefits with this rye. “It is a winter cereal, so it helps producers spread out their workload, allowing them to do some seeding in the fall which takes some pressure off seeding in the spring. More importantly, it allows them to harvest

“Its yields are 25 to 30% more than any other cereal that is grown in western Canada at this time. For livestock producers growing their own feed, having a high yield allows them to produce the lowest cost of feed per acre, and for farmers that is going to be a game changer.”

Wehrle adds with the new hybrid rye technology, quality has improved.

“Because all the plants are from the same parents, giving them a more consistent growth, it results in a more consistent grain, and at the end of the day, a much more consistent product.”

Smit says that another reason this hybrid rye was used in the trial was due to its increased resistance to ergot contamination.

“These new hybrids have a new trait called a pollen plus trait and this has Photo submitted

Being grown as feed for forages and grazing, it gives an opportunity for double cropping. “As an example if a farmer was growing a hybrid rye and took a forage off in late June, they could turn around and reseed it to a forage

barley or oat and get a second crop off in one year.”

Wehrle notes that he sees it as a very high value product in hogs, something that Smit took away from her research trial. “Our results from the trial show that hybrid rye could completely substitute wheat grain in grower-finisher diets.”

Winter Wheat - What To Consider For A Successful Crop

“ If a producer has a field that is normally too wet to plant early in the spring, it may be a candidate for winter wheat this fall. Not only would the field be planted at a more favourable time of

year, the crop can also take advantage of the spring moisture.”

Another benefit of planting a winter wheat crop, says L anglois, is that it spaces out equipment and staf f resources from the intensity of spring planting time.

Langlois points out there are risks of any winter crop, primarily winter survival.

“In the case of winter wheat, surviving the early spring months can also be a risk, given warm weather above the ground and frozen roots under the ground, or the potential of spring flooding. Crop insurance may help mitigate the risk.”

Once the decision has been made to plant winter wheat, Langlois says there a few things to consider: Seeding date “The timing of when to plant is very important, as yield losses or crop failure can result if planted outside of the planting window. If a producer is not going to try grazing the crop before winter, the earliest winter wheat should be planted is August 20. This prevents potentially getting too much top-growth that brings on diseases like snow mould, which can then create overwintering problems.”

The ultimate planting time, Langlois explains, depends on where the field is located. “Late September is the target date for the south. In central Alberta, it is the last week of August to the first week of September, and in northern Alberta and the Peace, the target date is the last week of August.”

Clubroot continues to spread in CVR. The single most important disease management strategy is crop rotation (at least 2 years between canola crops), followed by using clubroot resistant varieties. The Canola Council of Canada recommends seeding grass at canola field entry points to provide a non-host area for soil to drop off equipment. CVR Ag team and ALUS Vermilion River will work with farmers to proactively manage clubroot, and encourage grassing field approaches.

Reach out to us about one of our initiatives:  up to $100 worth of perennial seed to help establish grass at canola field approaches.  Access to broadcast seeder.  Perennials planted in field approaches, water runoff channels and/or wet or low lying areas at risk of clubroot may qualify for ALUS CVR annual payments.

Unlike central and southern regions, winter wheat planted in the northern parts of the province cannot afford to wait for moisture and should be seeded at depths down to 1. 25 inches, to a maximum of 1.5 inches.”

If moisture is not available within the top 1.25 inches and the calendar year is ticking away Langlois says it might be best to wait another year to plant winter wheat.

In addition to proper seed depth, Langlois says it is important to have a good seed population. “Winter wheat re q uire s a s e e d in g r ate of 3 5 0 to 400 viable seeds/m2 (34 to 38 viable seeds /f t 2). It is impor tant produc ers know the thousand kernel weight (TKW) of the seed being planted. A seeding rate calculator will help determine the proper seeding rate.”

Field selection “ The third most impor tant planting decision is to plant into trash, or have good stubble. Four inches is the ideal height of any stubble to catch the snow and to provide good insulating properties, however a 6 to 8 inch stubble height of canola will do nicely.

In northern regions where you cannot afford to wait for canola, following a pulse crop is common, even though by spring there is not much stubble left.”

Variety selection Producers also need to consider var iet y, s ays L ang l o i s. “ T he m ost important trait is winter survival, not yield. Next is maturity. You need to

consider when you would be harvesting a spring barley crop. A late maturity rating may put your harvest plans in jeopardy, so keep this in mind in the shorter growing areas.” Producers should also consider lodging resistance and the disease package.

not get to apply a split application of nitrogen the following early spring, Langlois says it is better to give all the nitrogen at planting time as long as it not with the seed. “This method is practiced quite successfully in Alberta without hindering winter hardiness.”

steady upward trend. In fact, farming cash receipts in 2018 were more than double the level in 1999. At the same time, farmers’ utilization of agricultural safety net programs has been cut in half.

M u c h o f ag r i c u l t u r e’s s te a d y economic growth has been fueled by increased trading opportunities. That grow th has spawned investment in Canadian infrastructure. Opportunity and growth in agriculture has led to new processing in our rural communities. A growing agricultural economy has generated new jobs in every region of Canada. All this is under threat from protectionist policies and we need to quickly see new policy approaches and new partnerships between agriculture and governments.

What is the economic impact of growing world protectionism? Italy was once the largest market for Canadian durum, the wheat used to make pasta. But Italy has adopted protectionist country of origin labelling requirements that have reduced our durum exports by about six t y perc ent. This has hap pened af ter the agricultural provisions of the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement with Europe was negotiated. India was once our leading export market for pulse crops like lentils and peas. Non-tariff and tariff trade barriers have slashed these export opportunities. China is a potential alternative market for pulse producers, but this option comes with significant market risks. China, a market that has taken over four milli o n m etr i c to nnes of canola over the last several years, has effectively closed its doors to Canadian canola. Tenders for barley purchases from Saudi Arabia continue to specify any origin but Canada. Phytosanitary issues with Peru threaten over one million tonnes of wheat exports. Vietnamese concerns over weed seeds have closed that market, despite Vietnam being a partner in the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership. The world has changed and we need to adjust our trade policies to counter these threats.

We need our political par ties to present a comprehensive approach to protecting our trading interests. A start would be a basic acknowledgement that a new systematic approach is required to counter the new world of protectionism. We need to do more than sign trade agreements, we need to place a priority on making sure trade agreements actually work. Canada has been reluctant to call out our trading

partners for their protectionist policies.

For example, the value chain continues to call for a World Trade Organization (WTO) challenge of Italy’s country of origin labelling provisions. China is now a full Member of the WTO. Is either country living up to their trade obligations? We need to challenge our trading par tners when trade agreements are not followed.

We also need political par ties to articulate clear policies that will facilitate market diversification. This does not mean that governments should plan to hire a sales force to sell wheat or lentils or canola. Marketing is the job of industry and exporters. Government’s job is to create an international regulatory environment that will minimize commercial risks.

What can government do to minimize risks? Expanding the scientific and regulatory knowledge in our embassies and high commissions is a good way to start. It is important to have scientific expertise in-country to quickly respond to phytosanitary and regulatory issues before they develop into a crisis. The most recent budget allocated additional funds to the Trade Commissioner Service and this is a good first step.

Government also needs to develop a comprehensive approach to mitigating potential non-tariff trade barriers before they arise. This will require a significant policy pivot. Unlike some of our trading partners (e.g., U.S.) Canada does not have a systematic approach to building the science-based regulatory capacity of our trading partners. This is not currently part of the mandate of government departments or agencies. This needs to change. This is especially true as our marketing efforts continue to diversify exports into countries with less-developed regulator y systems (e.g., Nigeria, Bangladesh).

What does this have to do with the coming election? Farmers need to be challenging candidates and their parties to outline their plan to protect agriculture grow th, investment and jobs. Here are three questions that ever y candidate should face in the upcoming campaign: 1. What is your party’s comprehensive plan to deal with non-tariff trade barriers facing agriculture?

2. Will your party use our existing trade agreement to systematically challenge non-tariff trade barriers?

3. Will your par t y commit new resources to proactively mitigating non-tariff trade barriers before they arise?

Upcoming Burgers To Beat MS Event

A & W in Vermilion will be joining locations across the country on August 22, to fundraise through the Burgers To Beat MS campaign.

Lots of excitement will be created as local people living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), dignitaries, staff, and community members rally together in support.

A selection of classic cars will be there in the evening, and many are getting excited as this is the 11th Annual Burgers To Beat MS. On August 22, $2 from every teen burger sold will go to MS research and support programs.

According to http://web.aw.ca, Burgers To Beat MS has raised over $13 million in the past ten year s, with Canada having one of the highest MS rates in the world. They state that one

in 385 Canadians live with MS, and women are three times more likely than men.

Ac c ording to the MS So c iet y of Canada, MS is a complex and unpredictable disease that affects the central n er vo u s syste m an d af fe c t s eac h person dif ferently. Common symp toms include fatigue, dizziness, muscle weakness, impaired sensation, vision loss, mood changes and cognitive impairment. They state that on average, 11 Canadians are diagnosed with MS every day.
