The Machine Shop is now open at 4021 52 Avenue in Vermilion and is the first company to offer water jet services in the community. Owner Connor Grieve has been working in the industry for 15 years, is dual ticketed and offers designing, machining, and welding. “I can cut anything up to six inches on

the water jet including wood, tile, granite, glass and metals including aluminum and stainless steel,” said Grieve. Unlike many machinists, he doesn’t turn dials and is able to run all of his equipment including a CNC mill and CNC lathe with computers. This in turn allows him to overlap work on different machines, by checking the screens or completing paperwork while he waits. For convenience and safety, Grieve engineered the

layout of his equipment so that he can be within 15 steps of each machine at all times. He has always been interested in making things even as a child, and is thrilled that so far The Machine Shop is serving customers within a two hour radius of Vermilion. “Vermilion is a nice central hub and the shop has a perfect location. I like that there is a taste of everything includ-

ing designing parts with different threads, seals or surfaces; I’m like a modern day blacksmith!” said Grieve. Grieve designs and manufactures everything from decorative fire pits and signs to oilfield equipment and parts. He looks forward to attending local events in the future to showcase the possibilities. Sweets & Treats - Night Owl 1675 opened recently in Vermilion of fering popcorn, ice cream, and candy at 5024 - 50 Avenue. Owners Dawn and Wade Woywitka are looking for ward to making their store as inviting as possible offering people a place to sit and enjoy their treats or take them to go. “I love candy; it ’s really exciting! It’s something we understand. I drive school bus, and enjoy working with c hil dren an d families,” s ai d Dawn Woywitka. Sweets & Treats will be supplying displays for weddings or bir thdays and can cater school or community events. Their party candy rentals can include the jars, candy or both; and can include a cotton candy machine or a popcorn machine. They will also be able to create giftware for any occasion. Cereal Agronomy Field Day

L a ke l a n d C o l l e g e h o s t e d t h e i r 4th Annual Cereal Agronomy Field Day on July 30. This was the third public tour that the Crop Research Program has hosted this season, with the two earlier ones being canola and pulse-crop focused. Approximately 50 farmers and industry members from the local area participated and had the opportunity to tour ongoing cereal crop research experiments looking at topics such as: disease management in wheat, methods to increase barley yield and profitability in Alberta, factors influencing acceptance of malt barley varieties, and new and future varieties of wheat, barley, and oats. “Crop producers and industry are fortunate to have a research program such as this one in their backyard. Varieties respond and grow differently depending on geogra-

phy, so seeing how these varieties grow in local conditions provides excellent information to farmers in this region,” said SeCan Marketing Representative, Trent Whiting. Laurel Thompson, Crop Research Scientist at Lakeland College, led the day with guest speakers in attendance including: Dr. Mike Harding (Research Scientist from Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, Brooks), Jeremy Boychyn (Cereal Agronomy Extension Specialist with Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions), Rich Joy (Director of Malting and Technical Services with Canada Malt), and Trent Whiting (Alberta and BC Marketing Representative, SeCan). The feedback Thompson received from the tour was positive, and attendees went home with takeaways to think about and use in their own farming operations. “I enjoy hosting these field days to connect with producers and industry. A diet with ad e quate fiber lower s blo o d cholesterol levels and reduces the risk of both heart disease and colon cancer. The fiber in black beans can provide you with digestive health by providing the nutrients needed for the development of the good bacteria in the lower digestive tract. Black beans are a good source of molybdenum, folate, fiber, manganese, calcium, magnesium, B vitamins and tryptophan. Since beans are high in nutrients, fiber and low in fat, they are thought to raise leptin levels, which in turn raise metabolism. Black beans are also high in antioxidants. One cup of either black beans or kidney beans provides 20 per cent of our daily recommended value of iron and 30 per cent of our daily recommended amount of protein. If you are preparing dried beans, it is important to allow them to soak in water for several hours or overnight and to throw away the water that the beans have soaked it, adding fresh water to cook the beans in. The soaking water will contain lectins and phytates that lower the availability of the nutrients in the beans. It is also very important that dried beans are fully cooked, and

never eaten partially uncooked. It is also a good idea to drain the canned beans and rinse the beans with water before using them in the salad. The onions and celer y add flavour and crispness to the texture of the salad. Bean Salad 1 can black beans 19 oz. 1 can white kidney beans or mixed beans 19 oz. 1/2 cup each finely sliced celery and chopped red pepper 1/4 cup finely chopped onions 2 tablespoons olive oil 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon honey 2 teaspoons maple syrup 1 clove of garlic pressed 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper Drain and rinse the beans. Combine in a bowl the beans, celery and onions. In a separate small bowl c om bine the oil, vineg ar s, honey s y r u p, g a r l i c , m u s t a r d , s a l t a n d pepper. Stir to blend the ingredients. Pour in the bean mixture. This salad is best made ahead to allow the beans time to marinate in the dressing. This salad can be made a day ahead and stored in a covered Tupperware type bowl, turning the bowl occasionally to aid in the marinating of the salad.

County Of Vermilion River Welcomes New CAO

Kitscoty, AB After undertaking a comprehensive recruitment process with the assistance of Transitional Solutions Inc., the County of Vermilion River Council is pleased to announce that Harold Northcott will be joining the organization as its Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) on Tuesday, September 3, 2019. We welcome Harold to the County of Ve r m i l i o n R i ve r te a m a n d l o o k forward to his progressive leadership st yle and commitment to customer service. Harold brings to the organization experience as a Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) in a number of both rural and urban communities, a strong background in the people ser vices sector of municipal government, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communit y Ser vices. He has also at tained his professional designation as a Certified Local Government

Manager (CLGM) through the Society of Local Government Managers of Alberta. Harold is also well known for his involvement with baseball over the years having served as the Provincial Head Coach for the Alberta Amateur Baseball Council and as Head Coach for baseball teams at tending the Canad a Gam es an d Canad a Cu p. Harold was a member of Canada’s n at i o n a l b a s e b a l l te a m b ot h a s a player and a coach. As a player he

was a starting pitcher when playing in the Intercontinental Cup and the Pan American games. The Town of Rocky Mountain House, where he served as Recreation Director, named a baseball diamond in his honor to recognize his many years of contribution to the sport. Both Harold and his wife Barb grew up on farms and t h ey are l o o k in g

forward to living in one of the County of Vermilion River communities. Harold stated he is very excited to start working for the County of Vermilion River and moving to the area with his wife Barb.

From August 3 - 5 Red Feather Ridge hosted around 200 members (from all across the western provinces) and nonmembers combined of the Alberta Traditional Bowhunters Association (ATBA) for their 2019 Heritage Classic Jamboree. ATBA president Ben Dobrowolsky said, “We have been banded together for 16 years, since 2003 and this is our 15th Jamboree. We have a big shoot every August long weekend and it’s called the Heritage Classic Jamboree because it is held on the Heritage Day long weekend.” According to Dobrowolsky the ATBA

started with half a dozen executive members originally with a president and vice president and is an affiliate under the parent organization Alberta Bowhunters Association (ABA). Dobrowolsky mentioned that the president of the ABA Brent Watson was also in attendance for the weekend Jamboree. Dobrowolsky also said, “When we started we had to borrow targets, borrow trailers. We had people from all around the province and that is what spurred on the provincial feeling behind the organization. Now, over the last 15 years past presidents had done such a good job fundraising and organizing that now we are 100 per cent self-sufficient for all of

our own events; we now have organizations and clubs asking us to borrow our equipment, rather than the other way around, and that’s thanks to great partner clubs like the Vermilion River Archers; without them we wouldn’t be putting the shoot on this weekend.” During the opening ceremonies on August 3, president of the Vermilion River Archers Orest Popil said, “I would like to thank everyone for coming. Today we recognize that we are gathered on Treaty 6 land and home of the Vermilion River Archers. The Vermilion River Archers is a club steeped with tradition and value and one of the longest-running archery clubs in the province.” The three-day Jamboree provided the attendee’s opportunities for adventure with two courses equipped with 3D targets, novelty shoots, and a couple of gopher hunts, as well as, medics on

site in case of any type of medical emergency. “ T h e g o p h e r h u n t s p r ov i d e t h e members the opportunity for practice and comradery, as well as the opportunity for a group hunt,” said Dobrowolsky. The weekend also offered a wine and cheese event which was sponsored by local business Harbrook and Paisley. A banquet supper was provided by their host for the weekend Red Feather Ridge. Les Lahey was the entertainment and beer was provided by Lakeland Brewery out of St. Paul. “I would like to say a big thanks to the Vermilion River Archers for co-coordinating this event for us, without them it would be impossible. I also would like to thank Red Feather Ridge for hosting us because without a venue and organizers we would be out of luck,” said Dobrowolsky.

Expand Your Living Space With A Basement Makeover
