Vermilion’s 113th Fair

Thousands of people flooded the Vermilion Agricultural Grounds from July 25 - 27, taking in a mix of the midway, agricultural shows, and entertainment.

The parade kicked off the Fair with a variety of entries categorized in commercial, out of town, senior and junior organizations, comic, pioneer, antique, and decorated cars. People of all ages enjoyed watching the colourful floats pass by, most tailored to the theme celebrating “Yesterdays Memories, Tomorrows Dreams.”

Following the rain, visitors then proceeded to the fair grounds, meandering through trade booths, the bench fair, food vendors, and the midway. Equipment displays, and several livestock shows were of interest to agricultural enthusiasts.

provided additional favourite activities for children.

Full grandstands supported the pony chariot and chuckwagon races, as well as musical entertainment from The Bromantics, Don Bryan, and Mick Dalla-Vee. Musical performances by Karac Hendrick and Kalsey Kulyk kept the crowd dancing in the beer gardens.

High action included the tractor pulls, cowboy mounted shooters, and heavy horse shows. New demonstrations this year included a threshing display, and a shorthorn show.

Fairgoers from as far as Australia had no shortage of interesting events and tried their best to take in their favourites during the three day span. Town of Vermilion Broadband Update

The Town of Vermilion was the first place in Canada to have new Hook’d technology installed, offering free wifi during the Vermilion Fair.

Hook’d was invented by Jeremy Fried, and each pod covers 2,000 metres and is able to hold 1,800 devices. They are also able to overlap and draw from underused areas to support overused areas.

“As a community, we are now saying broadband is a utility, and we want to start making it affordable. It is critical for business and for education,” said Mayor Caroline McAuley.

Through Taylor Warwick, the Town of Vermilion examined what is existing in the region, and to encourage rural economic development, HUB hosted a Digital Futures meeting in Vermilion last year. It was there town representatives met Brent Grisdale from Rigstar. Around June 20, they met with Brent and Merle Isaacson

from Connect Mobility to discuss the latest technology versus what they were getting from existing telecoms. Around July 9, they met the consultant from Taylor Warwick and began planning for the fair; the idea was to use it as a test pilot for businesses.

“I didn’t even know if this was possible in this timeline. There are some things we can control, and some things we can’t,” said Brent Grisdale.

Brent and M erle c ame from the Calgary area, and Jeremy came from Las Vegas along with COO Ella Wayne from Las Vegas and Jimmy Sheffield for engineering from Austin, Texas. The Town of Vermilion worked with representatives to have two units installed on the fairgrounds; one was located on the grandstand and one on the arena. Two additional units had been damaged in shipping and were unable to be used. The group also had additional challenges with the weather and with Shaw not providing

the 1G specified, at times they were only receiving 20 MB. They described that this would not be an issue if chosen as a permanent broadband solution in Vermilion with each pod having fibre running directly to it. They also noted that funds would stay local, unlike with shareholders for companies, and that with this new technology the Town would be able to provide better service and that upload and download speeds would be equal.

“Thank you for bending over backwards, for going over and above, and for believing we could make this work. It will test the products here in Vermilion, and is a more affordable and viable solution for our community. It could revolutionize northeastern Alberta,” said Mayor McAuley.

“There are no national or provincial strategic broadband plans and grant money is now being withheld. Every day that they don’t come up with a system, we are going to be losing communities,

people, and businesses. We are at a disadvantage to urban centres and are getting caught in the bureaucracy of indecision. As a result, we were so excited to try this!” said Councillor Robert Pulyk.

Ngaire Elaine Genge (nee Sainsbury) June 27, 1965 - July 26, 2019 It is with tremendous sadness and broken hearts that the family of Ngaire Elaine Genge, 54, of Hillsborough, NB, formerly of Creston South, NL and Labrador City, NL announce her sudden passing. Ngaire passed away on July 26, 2019 with her loving husband and son by her side.

She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her husband - Peter Genge and son - Michael Genge of Hillsborough, NB, mother - Mamie Sainsbury of Vermilion, sisters - Lorna Hamilton (Jason) of Vermilion, Jackie Foote (Tim) of Nova Scotia, brother - John Sainsbury (Debbie) of Labrador City, NL, motherin-law - Joan Genge of Saint John, NB, sister-in- laws - Joanne Genge of Saint John, NB, Heather Bertin (David) of Long Reach, NB,.

Traveling To Allandale School Through The Seasons

Many years ago, there was an Allandale School District located near Vermilion. For a time, it was a thriving location with a school and many residents who came together to build up the area they had settled in.

Here is a glimpse into what it was like going to school in Allandale in the 1930s.

Today, going to school means walking down the street, or taking the bus.

It is relatively easy to get to where you are going to learn but in the 1930s, getting to the Allandale School was a bit more difficult. According to John McMorrow, a trail wound south of his home for half a section through the open range. After following this for over a kilometre, you would leave the trail and follow a road allowance for another

kilometre or so. At that point, you would be at your school where 20 to 30 other students would learn in a one-room schoolhouse.

One of the most popular summer past times during the 1930s in the district was softball, as well as football (soccer). Another popular game was cricket, owing to the large number of settlers from England who were bringing their culture over to Alberta at the time.

O ne interesting aspec t of going to school at Allandale, according to McMorrow, was that going to school without shoes was common and popular in the summer. As McMorrow stated in relation to the Allandale history, “I recall, with pleasure, strolling across the fields in summer time. The birds singing, the flowers, the horses and other things of nature.”

That all changed when the winter came and going to school was much more difficult. Snow drifts could be

very deep and hard to move through. from Earnest-Minded Men. For someone like McMorrow, a young boy from England who had seen snow only once, it was a very big change from what he was used to.

The winter was not all bad in Allandale. There was sledding down Rufus Omness Hill, as well as Christmas concerts.

The Campbell creek would run past the Allandale school in the spring, adding to the beauty of the entire area.

Add in the many birds of the spring and it was a sight to behold.

Allandale School would eventually close and be used as a community centre for many years.

The Vermilion Chamber of Commerce held the 1st Annual Kick- Off to the Vermilion Fair on July 24.

Nearly 300 people attended and had the opportunity to sample a chili cookoff, have a meet and greet with chuckwagon drivers, as well as check out various vendors and business participants.

“We’re always excited to come to Vermilion (from Camrose). The crowd is awesome here and there are so many things to do at this fair. I’ve done this for five years, and I love being a part of the APCCA circuit because we’re basically just a big family!” said David Vincent who is a circuit man who holds for a bunch of guys in the wagons and

Vermilion 4-H Sheep Show

Oodles of cuddly sheep entered the ring as the Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club held their Annual Achievement Day on July 23, at the Vermilion Agricultural Grounds.

With their club slogan, “small but mighty,” club members showed off their hard work throughout the year as they showed their well groomed sheep and goats.

“I really loved showing as a senior m e m b e r. S o m e t i m e s w a t c h i n g a

younger child you have helped succeed is more exciting than succeeding yourself. Spending time with club members throughout the year, they become like family,” said Kaylie Krys in previous years.

Representatives thanked the judge,

sponsors, and the volunteers.

“I like all the things the 4-H Sheep Club taught me including responsibility, public speaking, making friendships, showcasing accomplishments with our animals, and how to have fun!” said Madison Ferguson in previous years.

This is the second year Crosshair Springs have been at the Vermilion Fair. Logan and Krista Hunter not only raise mules and horses, they operate Crosshair Springs which offers various trail rides, cattle drives,

Fountain Tire held their annual Fair Pancake breakfast on July 26. The charge for the pancake breakfast was by donation and offered pancakes, sausage and scrambled eggs.

Proceeds from the breakfast went to the Friends of Vermilion Regional Centre towards the purchase of new flooring in the secondary dance room.
