Company was created on June 6, 1919. To commemorate their 100th Anniversary, they will celebrate with a mobile commemorative train stopping in various cities throughout the year. The CN celebration in Edmonton will run from July 18 - 23. “I found it amazing and being a coin collector, I already had the commemorative coin. Part of my wanting the coin and the photo was that CN is a part of our heritage,” said Carlson. According to www.cn.ca, they are the only railway in North America that touches three coasts - allowing us to reach 75 percent of North America’s population. They transport over $250 billion worth of goods every year and suggest that chances are most people’s necessities (car parts, mobile devices, food, soap etc.) have been handled by CN. In addition, in 2019 CN plans to invest approximately $370 million to expand and strengthen Alberta’s rail infrastructure. Carlson remembers many years ago riding on steam trains which he says is becoming a part of folk lore now, but he finds it so captivating; he likes the

Upon graduation from the U of A, she moved to Saskatoon, SK. She met and married Hugh there. They moved to Elrose, SK, where they farmed for six years. They found HOME in Vermilion, AB in October 1979. She is survived by her husband Hugh; son Ken and his wife Kristina; grandchildren Rebecca and Matthew; brother Bill and his wife Pat, their son Doug and his wife Hana; brother Dave’s children Lee, Terri, Lori, Carol and Yvonne, their spouses and children; also by treasured Edwards cousins. ZENOVIA MUDRYK

Zenovia Mudryk passed away on June 28, 2019 in Edmonton at the age of 83 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her children David (Joan) Mudryk, Daryel Mudryk, Pauline (Frank) Huss, Jackie (Shauna) Mudryk and Charlene (Larry) McFarlane; grandchildren Shawn Mudryk (Kalida Kennedy), Ryan (Raquel) Mudryk, Joshua Mudryk, Jordan Mudryk, Chase McFarlane and Brenna McFarlane; great grandchildren Jase and Bohdan Mudryk, Kaius, Brodie and Rhett Mudryk; sister Victoria Paranych; brother Johnny (Emily) Lypka; sister in law Katrine Lypka; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Paul Mudryk; siblings Mary (Bill) Tillapaugh, Metro Lypka and Edward Lypka; brother in law Alex Paranych; and niece Judy Lypka. A Divine Liturgy and Funeral Mass was held at St. Olga Ukrainian Catholic Church, Vermilion. Enbridge Ride To Conquer Cancer

Six Vermilion residents will be cycling over 200 kilometers as they participate in the 11th Annual Enbridge Ride To Conquer Cancer from August 17 – 18. Team Vermilion includes Darren Bratrud, Joe Zeller, Scott Webb, Brandon Tupper, Craig Brown, and George Rogers. They held a beer and pizza fundraiser at the Vermilion Heritage Park’s Community Oven on July 4, with net proceeds of $2,235.38. “We had an excellent turn out with approximately 200 people, and we lucked out with the weather. We would like to thank Express Pizza and Prairie Place Liquor for supporting our event,” said Darren Bratrud. The 50/50 winner was James Oberhofer from Marwayne. Oberhofer won $1,873 and donated half of the winnings back to the team. In addition, Rusty Stal-

wick donated a signed Braden Holtby jersey that the team will use to host a silent auction online. New team member, George Rogers said that he has cycled before and participated in the MS bike ride. Enjoying their training and common sentiment, he went on to say, “It’s the one thing I like to do in the summer aside from gardening. I’m really excited and even though I’ve been in this community for a couple of years now, I’m the novice. Other members of the team include long time locals which helps me to integrate. Wherever I’ve lived, I’ve always tried to be involved in something in the community, for instance, I’m also a Lions member in Vermilion. Aside from my role as CAO for the Town of Vermilion, to be part of a community event is really great for me. I don’t exercise much, but I like to cycle. Cancer is very near and dear to my heart. I lost my sister to cancer in 2017

after she fought a 20-year battle with cancer. Currently, my best friend is on his final journey with metastatic cancer as a result of prostate cancer. There are a lot of great causes, but this one is very personal to me,” said George Rogers. “Riding in a cross wind is the most difficult. There have been days where the wind nearly blew us off the road. As a team we have raised over $27,000 so far,” said Craig Brown. The Enbridge ® Ride to Conquer Cancer® Presented by Evraz has raised over $75 million for the Alberta Cancer Foundation since 2009. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, an estimated one in two Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetimes, and one in four will die from it. They speculate that in 2017, there were approximately 80,800 cancer deaths in Canada. In addition, they say that every day, 565 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer and 221 will die. Every hour, an

estimated 24 people will be diagnosed with cancer, and nine will die. In the past year, approximately 103,100 Canadian men and 103,200 Canadian women were diagnosed with cancer – thus totalling 206,200 new cases of cancer. Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada and responsible for over 30 per cent of all deaths. The ride supports research as well as enhanced care programs like Patient Navigators who explain how treatment will work and understand additional challenges rural Albertans face with a cancer diagnosis. private family functions. Because Strawberry is a common allergen, do check with guests before using this as your dessert of choice for entertaining. All if that aside, this is a truly delicious treat, filled with the exquisite flavours of the summer prairie. Strawberry Rhubarb Pie 2 cups of sliced rhubarb 2 cups of strawberries 2 tablespoons of melted butter 3/4 cup of sugar 1 egg 1 tablespoons cream or milk 3 tablespoons flour Slice the rhubarb into 1.4 Inch slices. Beat the egg, add the sugar and the melted butter, cream, and flour. Stir in the rhubarb and strawberries. Pour into an unbaked shell, and then cover a top pastry or with strips of pastry to form a lattice. You can sprinkled the top of the pastry with a teaspoon of sugar, but that is optional. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes, and then at 350 degrees for 30 - 40 minutes. Here are some additional tips: Because a fruit pie will sometimes bubble over, place the pie on a cookie sheet in the oven. If you use frozen rhubarb, the pie will be waterier. To combat this, add an additional one tablespoon of flour. Another tip to help prevent a soggy bottom crust is to sprinkle the crust with 1 or 2 teaspoons of sugar before adding in the rhubarb and strawberry pie filling.

The Wellsdale Local Improvement Case

When we look back on the early 20th century, one of the biggest issues wa s t h e r i g h t fo r women to vote. It is something we take for granted right now but prior to 1918, most women could not vote. In 1884, the first women in Canada, specifically property-owning widows in Quebec and Ontario could vote. Over the coming years, property-owning women could vote in New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. In 1916, women in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia could vote. By 1918, all white and black women, except in Quebec could vote. It should be noted that for the most

part, Canada was one of the first large countries to give women the right to vote, following New Zealand (1893), Australia (1902) and Norway (1913). Several smaller countries gave the right to vote from 1838 to 1917. Canada gave women the right to vote slightly before the United Kingdom and two years before the United States. Why do I bring all this up? Well, in the Vermilion area, there was a case of a woman’s right to vote a full five years before suffrage was brought to Alberta. It was the Wellsdale Local Improvement Case. In March of that year, Charles Hodgins defeated a S.B. McDonald for the right to serve on the council of division one in the district. On behalf of McDonald, Charles Parker made an application to declare

that the election was invalid because a woman had voted. Charles Hodgins would employ the services of Norman Murray to contest the application. The case would be heard before a Mr. J. Scott and it was thrown out with costs to be paid. This may seem like a minor case of someone trying to contest an election that they lost, but if we look closer, this can actually serve as an early example of a woman, who was not propertyowning, to get the right to vote. Five years before women earned the right to vote in Alberta, one woman made her voice heard by casting her vote. Sadly, who that woman was is lost to history and she may never know she was setting an example for others to follow. As for S.B. McDonald, he would get his seat back the following year.

Copper Cork Distillery

The Copper Cork Distillery is pleased to announce that they will soon be opening for business in Vermilion. Partners include Todd Ree, Randy Fadden, Rod Fadden, and Tom Hartwell. Their production line includes a steam boiler, two control panels, a 1,000 litre mash tun for grain and water (this is where enzymes are added to break starches down into simple sugars), three fermentation tanks (the mash is cooled and yeast is added for fermentation). The mash will stay in the fermentation tanks for 4 - 5 days. Once fermentation stops, the material is pumped to the still for distillation. Next to the still are two copper coloured columns with stainless steel dephlegmators on top. The dephlegmators help to purify the alcohol. The last column is where the vapors are condensed where you will see the highly concentrated alcohol running out of the parrot into collection vessels. The distillates will then be run through a charcoal filtration system, and finally put into a 200 litre proofing tank where the final product will be prepared

for consumption. “There’s a reason they use copper. Copper is very malleable; you can bend it and shape it into different vessels. Also, during the process of fermentation, bi-products of fermentation (sulphides) are produced. These sulphides can give alcohol an off flavour and cause exaggerated hangovers. The sulphides will attach to the copper and form copper sulphate which can be cleaned out later using a citric acid solution. When it comes out it can be as high as 96.5 per cent pure alcohol. You have to have special cleansers to get it any higher,” said Managing Partner/ Head Distiller, Todd Ree. Many of the pieces in the Taproom were made by the owners and are already gathering a lot of attention. The still is named, ‘Ol’ Nellie,’ after the Fadden’s grandmother and the group plans to name other equipment as time goes on. Several local items have been incorporated in the old-fashioned and industrial decor. Hand-made items include a couple of the doors, tables, and their signature delivery truck sign. Having a fuel supply at the Airport will not only increase activity it will also help with business attraction,” said Airport Committee member, Derek Young. Committee member Greg Barr said, “The assessment identifies what we need to do maintenance wise with the state of the runway and what we can expect. For the past few years, I have enjoyed talking with local pilots, three of whom are on the committee,

and we identified a few things that the Town of Vermilion can continue to work towards. Priorities we have identified include perusing fuel, attracting aircraft maintenance technicians or any air related enterprises, as well as making more use of and getting more available hangers. At the end of the day we can’t have a whole lot of economic growth without having a lot more aircraft traffic. Some hurdles have to be achieved before looking too hard at other long term goals for our airport, such as the proposed condos, etc. For current or long term projects, acquiring grants and other funding is essential for maintenance and advancement. I hope by the end of my term that some of these things identified will come to fruition. As a council

we identify what our strategy will be going forward in order to achieve them and will engage economic development as things go forward. It’s great having the Vermilion River Flying Club. That is one thing we haven’t had for years and they are an essential voice in helping us steer airport advancement to being more viable. There are very few municipalities in Alberta that have an airport within their boundaries, and so we have a golden opportunity here! We can use the Vermilion Airport as a tool to attract other businesses here; it’s a win-win.” To view the Airport Master Plan, you can visit vermilion.ca.

The Town of Vermilion’s Airport Master Plan was recently released and recommended resurfacing the taxiway and apron within the next five years for an estimated $2,161,800. The plan completed by Tetra Tech noted that Vermilion has strong transportation connectivity. “It is located at the junction of Highways 16 (Yellowhead) and Highway 41, a north-south highway linking Cold Lake to Medicine Hat. The Yellowhead Highway is twinned from Lloydminster to Jasper. In addition, the CN Rail mainline passes through Vermilion. Both the CN Rail mainline and the Yellowhead Highway pass within 1 km of YVG. Vermilion Airport has committed land for agricultural operations as well as undertaken two subdivisions of the airport property for light industrial development. The relative proximity of both the CN Rail mainline and the Yellowhead Highway do provide the opportunity for the airport to develop as a logistics centre as well as an industrial area with broad continental and/or global connectivity. As a reminder, the closest scheduled passenger service is available at the Lloydminster or Edmonton airports,” read the plan. As the new Chair of the Airport Advisory Committee, Shawn Jacula said, “The town approving the Airport Master Plan is an important step in retaining our facility for future aviation activity; namely the important use of fixed wing air ambulance services. Lil Wilson’s 80th Birthday

Vermilion’s Lil Wilson celebrated her 80th Birthday on July 2, at Nick’s family Restaurant and the Vermilion Valley Lodge. Growing up, Lil didn’t remember more than a few special birthdays as it always came right after Canada Day and the long weekend. She said, “One time my brotherin-law went down in the well and chipped ice and made home-made ice cream. My mother made home-made cones, and I ate so many that I ended up ill. My mother sometimes made a cake but we lived a long 3” wide version way from anyone, so I was overly excited when one year my great aunt came over. I also remember later on in life a friend had ushered us home from the lake as she planned a surprise party for me.”

This year, her celebration began at Nick’s Family Restaurant during a retired hospital worker’s luncheon. She also met with some red hat ladies and other friends. She then continued on to the Vermilion Valley Lodge where she was able to serve the cake. “I wanted to share the cake with as many people as possible. Flo McQuid celebrated her 95th Birthday on July 2, and was quite thrilled that we got to share a birthday together. It’s nice having someone know what it’s like having a birthday right after a big holiday. It was a fabulous day; I couldn’t believe how it all turned out. Thank you to everyone for coming and helping me celebrate!” said Wilson. Overall, about 75 people enjoyed the cake and ice cream and visiting throughout Lil Wilson with a five foot cake on her 80th Birthday. Photo submitted the day.

Mannville Classic Cruisers Submitted

Thirty brave folks in cars and trucks plus two motorbikes graced the Spruce Park in Mannville for the Canada Day Celebrations Shown N Shine this past July 1st. The spectators enjoyed a beautiful morning viewing shiny vehicles and voting on them. Vehicles came from Lloydminster, Irma, Mannville, and points in between. In the rainy afternoon the prizes were handed out to Rick Borysiuk with a 1999 F150 Lightening for the 1990’s and newer Truck, Max McKillup with a 1977 C10 in the 1973-1990 truck category, Dan Tompkins 1950 Mercury M3 won the 1972 and older category. For the cars 1990 and newer Randy Bury with a 2019 Dodge Challenger, 1973 -1990 category with a 1974 Dart was Cody Conway, and the 1972 and older winner was Steve Bzdera with a 1948 Fleetmaster. Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition Association hosts Colonial Days Fair every July. We aim to bring quality entertainment to Lloydminster, to families and surrounding communities. We host over 150 activities over four days July 10-13, 2019 at the Lloyd Exh Grounds. Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition Association is a non-profit organization since 1906. Since its foundation the history of Lloyd Exh has been to promote agriculture events and bring those to the urban community. The families can expect to enjoy 4 days of fun with sprawling activities throughout the entire facilities. This year we are excited to have the

Canadian Armed Forces on site and on display. The Canadian Army is the land component of the Canadian Armed Forces. We train and provide forces to protect and defend Canada. Our personnel, working in over 30 occupations, are our greatest resource. We are a highly capable force consisting of full-time Regular soldiers, part-time Reservists serving in our communities and Canadian Rangers from remote locations in Canada. Your life has been changed forever, innocence lost and “world assumption “challenged. Emotions are raw; anger, guilt, blame, fears and depression are experienced. Sometimes it can be difficult to feel grateful for anything. Gratitude can seem impossible, even in everyday living after the experience of grief or depression. Working through you grief journey takes time and courage and a willingness to do the “work of grieving.” Trying Gratitude as a healing tool is one way of doing the work of grieving. Gratitude is the affirmation of life, a way to maintain

our inner balance, where we need balance the most. Gratitude can be difficult to start especially during times of turmoil and grief. A very good way to get back to what has brought us joy in the past is a “Gratitude Journal.” I know most say they can’t or don’t like to write a journal. One teacher taught” that you begin a journal with something concrete “ ie a pen.( I am grateful for the pen that I can write with.) When we enter into a gratitude practice, we begin to teach ourselves a different way of interpreting our lives. We learn to pay more attention to the things that are “right” than we do the things that are wrong. We learn to appreciate, rather than to discount

the good in our lives. We begin to learn that we, not our experiences, are IN CHARGE OF OUR EMOTIONS. READ ONMake a list “Gratitude List” . Find a concrete gratitude ie: “I am thankful for this paper”. List 5 things a day of gratitude (if 5 is to many, maybe try 1 or 2 and increase) Try thinking of the 5 things and what 5 things you can think of right now. Have a gratitude “object” such as a small rock or coin. When touching the object it reminds to think of 5 things of gratitude. It will help you focus on what is “ right “in your life and remind you of all the things you have been grateful for each time and you

can develop a sense of trust in your own well being. As you begin to explore the practice of gratitude, you will begin to see that gratitude builds upon itself. The more you discover that you are grateful for, the more things you will notice to appreciate. Gratitude becomes an act of self blessing, and not only you but every person in your life will benefit from it. Practicing Gratitude is the beginning of finding a sense of right in your life and a sense of calm peace and a happiness for yourself. The Innisfree Minburn 4-H Beef Club held its final meeting of the year on June 5. Our Achievement Day was on May 29, everyone did a really good job with their steers. We held our awards night at the Innisfree ball diamonds on June 27. We had a potluck put on by the parents which was ver y good. Congratulations to Courtney Cannan who won the member of the year award. All of our members received a breeder’s association gift and an embroidered hoodie from our club. After our awards some members

Mannville Firefighter Assists In High Level Wildfire
