Approximately 200 people gathered at Vermilion Agland as they held the Grand Opening of their new shop at 4915-47 Avenue on June 18.

Chris Wilson has been working with Agland for the past 13 years, and as the Service Manager for the past seven years.

“The size of the equipment, the popularity of John Deere machines, and our technician base has gradually increased in that time from three to five or six and now to 12 technicians,” said Wilson.

Between the Lloydminster, St. Paul, and Vermilion locations, there are 60 technicians and 143 total staff.

“This is great for the community, for our producers, as well as for our technicians and the rest of the staff or team.

Added features of the new shop include an overhead hoist, a drive through double wash bay, and a clean and spacious building. Since the growth in size of machinery, for the growth of the business we need to support the customers, and thus

‘The Grizzlies’ Movie Screening In Vermilion

Influencers Motivating Influencers hosted a movie screening of ‘The Grizzlies’ at Lakeland College in Vermilion on June 20.

Influencers Motivating Influencers (IMI) is a group of artists, musicians, and television personalities who have been encouraging communities to embrace mental health awareness for the past six and a half years. They have visited over 40 communities and provided over 160 workshops primarily in Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Nunavik (northern Quebec).

Founder and tour producer, Dave DeVos, used to live in Northern Canada and now lives in Vermilion, Alberta. He welcomed everyone to the screening and thanked everyone for creating more awareness about Indigenous cultures

in other regions as well as awareness about mental health.

“I hope this movie will inspire you and show you that you can do anything you set out to. IMI began in Kugluktuk and all of the people on the team have been impacted by suicide and mental health.

We often reference the Dick Van Dyke quote, ‘We all need something to do, someone to love, and something to hope for,’” said Dave DeVos. Based on a true story about the town, Kugluktuk, ‘The Grizzlies’ movie follows a teacher who moved to the Arctic but didn’t plan to stay long. He was soon compelled to make a difference with a group of youth by encouraging them to become involved in lacrosse to avoid struggling with alcohol, abuse, and suicide.

“This is the number one Canadian film in theatres today! It is currently in independent screenings and will be released to the public in October. I think having local actors coming on their own accord was a great surprise to the audience, including to a local lacrosse team who came to watch the film,” added DeVos. R i c k y ’s m o t h e r, C h a r i t y M a r t y Pahtaykan, said, “Originially I was going to attend by myself. The boys had auditions and when I said that I was going, Ricky said that he would come, and then the other boys joined us (Tristen and Samuel). By attending we surprised Lakeland College’s Manager of Indigenous Support Services - Clint Chocan, IMI founder Dave DeVos and the audience because the film was already rolling when the boys entered.

Ricky Marty-Pahtaykan also enjoyed the film screening in Vermilion and said, “This was my second time in Vermilion, the first time being at the Fair in 2014 which was a good experience.

It never fails; even after a couple dozen times of watching the film, each time it is like the first time. Each time I get a lump in my throat - especially with the youth; the look in the children’s eyes is moving. I never thought people would look up to me like that. During a recent tour in British Columbia, the youth were star-struck.

It makes me want to keep building to empower the youth. I am not in it for the money or fame. I want to show people that nothing is impossible and that if you have a dream, it can come

Currently 23, I began modelling at the age of 11. My grandma had encouraged me to go to modelling agencies which I had done for a few months but realized it was very money-oriented and time consuming. It was too much at that age, and wanted to finish school.

Then my grandma passed away and I had given up on my dream because my biggest fan had left me.

When I was 14, I remained in my room - depressed, not wanting to do anything. My mom told me what was going on in Edmonton; there was lookalike contest for ‘Twilight’. Knowing that I was depressed she said that I had to keep doing it and reminded me that I could do it for my grandma. So I got up on my two feet, and went to Edmonton, and won the contest hosted by 91.7 The Bounce. I got an acting agent and all three of us got introduced to acting.

It skyrocketed with us getting casted in films. It still is, and I am loving it!

Because I lost my grandma at a very young age and my character, Adam at a very young age was being raised by his grandparents - being around them is what made me put out in the film. It was very memorable. I’ll never forget those moments that I spent in Iqaluit.”

Runners were able to be timed if they wished with volunteers from Midwest Endurance lending their equipment.

Chris Bogue and Mackenzie Brown from Lloydminster began Midwest Endurance three or four months ago to bring more events like this one to the Lakeland area.

“The Crisis Line has been around for 36 years to combat the amount of

suicides in the area. It is still available for anyone to have someone to talk to in times of crisis,” said President Caroline McKinnon.

Participants enjoyed gathering to support founder, the late Susan Howard, and support the Crisis Line.

Blueberries have one of the highest amounts of antioxidants of all fruit. Recent research has shown that when eaten regularly they deliver the following benefits: increased cognitive function, benefit eye sight, improved memory and help to stabilize blood sugar. A study at the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center suggests that eating blueberries may help reduce belly fat, by regulating blood sugar and stabilizing insulin. Blueberries in

About this time, roughly speaking, back in 1981 I was rapidly unpac king the contents of my locker just outside Mrs. Pullyblank’s Grade 7 classroom at J.R. Robson on what was my last day of school. The reason for the alacrity was that my Dad, brother and I were heading off on what was a rather big adventure that summer: a fly-in fishing trip to Charles Lake. Now Charles Lake may itself not ring a bell… but Lake Athabasca might…and this trip was going to take us right up to that area to be nestled above said lake within the far north east corner of Alberta, in fact into the only part of Alberta that is within the rock of the Canadian Shield. After many days of preparation (and height-

You can freeze blueberries, with little loss of nutrients, I freeze them in the clear plastic container they come in, just as they are, and they keep well for a whole year. I recently made several blueberry tarts, to get the per fect recipe. I began cooking the blueberries, with sugar and a bit of flour in the raw pie shell, but I found that the bottom of the cooked pie shell was soggy, so I switched to developing the recipe with a pre cooked pie shell, with excellent results. heavy, and on my first pie, when I was taking it our of the oven, the aluminum pie plate shell just folded, with the hot pie spilling into the oven, out of the oven and on to the floor. What a mess it was. Perhaps the aluminum is thinner now, as I have never had that happen before. Also if you making yo ur ow n p a s tr y, o r p ur c h a s i n g a premade pastry shell, be sure not to choose damaging vegetable shortening. Lard is more natural and is recognized by our body for health. Here is a delicious desert that takes advantage of the upcoming summer abundance of blueberries. Now we can purchase frozen, organic wild blueberries, which are rich in flavor, and outstanding as a blueberry tart. This desert is a winner ser ved with ice cream or whipped cream.

Blueberry Tart 1/4 cup water 1/3 cup packed brown sugar 1/4 cup butter 2 tablespoons cornstarch 4 cups blueberries.

1 – 9 inch pie shell Prick the bottom of the raw pie crust with a fork several times. Cook the pie shell in a 350 degree oven for approximately 10 minutes. Meanwhile in a heavy bottomed pot, add the water, brown sugar, butter, cornstarch, and stir. The butter will not yet be melted.

Add in three cups of the blueberries.

Cook over low/medium heat, stirring until the creamy color disappears, and the juice thickens. Add in the last cup of blueberries and cook for a shor t time more. Pour the blueberry pie filling into the cooked pie shell, and chill.

ened anticipation), we were joined by my Uncle Trevor Clarke, neighbour Bill McGrath, and cousin Bryon and off we went up Highway 63 to complete the long earth bound section of our journey of which the terminus was the floatplane base at Gregoire Lake just east from Ft. MacMurray. Now getting on a plane with Dad by this point, because he had a plane, was a event accustomed to if not yet actually routine. But stuffing a whole fishing party, with all the gear necessary therein, on a deHavilland Twin Otter with floats and taking off from a lake about to go into the far northern wilderness was anything but routine. In no time at all it seemed we were nearing the shore of Lake Athabasca where the Athabasca Sand Dunes Park stretches along the southern shoreline. Yes…if you didn’t know about all the other things about Alberta, it has sand dunes. From there

we came down over the lake and landed just offshore from Fort Chipewyan where we docked to drop off a few supplies and take on barrels of fuel. Within the hour we were back in the air and it seemed only minutes before we were lining up along the length of the lake to land and taxi beside a small rocky island out in the middle that would be our fish camp HQ. Soon the Otter was off down the lake again and into the air …and we were now well and truly out of touch with civilization. In taking stock of our canvas tent accommodations…growing up the prairie didn’t prepare me to have the bare floor of our tent be solid rock rather than dirt. But where there was dirt to speak of hugging to the solid rock only a short few inches down in it was permafrost… which made a rather convenient freezer location for the fish we were surely about to catch. And catch fish we did…as

even casting from shore brought fish to hook on most occasions. Given the fact that we were so close to the Summer Solstice and daylight was essentially 24 hours a day, fishing would take place for nearly 23 1/2 of them…when it wasn’t continually raining from unpredictable squalls. So from our island base nestled in between a protected channel between two long and narrow arms of the lake, off we went each morning and evening to fish in the much deeper and colder water on either side where the Lake Trout lived.

Many a trout were caught too including one of mine that took my numbed 13 year old arms 30 minutes to reel in…a 17 pounder. An experience pretty hard to forget and I wasn’t the only one or pulled in the biggest fish. At any rate many fond fishing stories were generated on that trip and many a picture to remember. On that Trip up to the 60th Parallel.

It was one of the oldest school districts established in the entire area, dating back to June 15, 1907 and Allandale School served a vital purpose for the community for many years. Originally, when the district was formed, trustees had some trouble deciding on a name. Eventually, the name of Allandale was chosen, rather than the more popular Campbell Creek that several people had suggested.

After meeting at the home of T. Pederson in September of 1907, E.F. Souder was chosen as chairman and C.P. Hiles was appointed as secretary-treasurer.

The first bylaw to be passed in the school district was done on Sept. 30, authorizing the borrowing of $1,500 at seven per cent.

Oddly enough, the second bylaw, passed on March 13, 1908, was passed to authorize borrowing that same amount of money but at eight per cent. Most likely, the district

could not get the money at seven per cent and had to issue a new bylaw.

A total of $500 was taken out to advertise for a teacher in the Manitoba Free Press, and to send to teacher agencies. As well, 12 double-seated desks, a teacher’s desk, two teacher chairs and 30 square feet of blackboard was ordered.

For a time, school was held in the English Church until a new school was built.

By June of 1908 the school was ready to start, and Victoria Clerke of Toronto was hired and took over as the first teacher of the school. Clerke was the second choice, after Laurie Dewar who had accepted but then could not come.

E.F. Souder offered to build the school for $1,908 and his tender was accepted, and construction soon began. The board would hold its first meeting in the new schoolhouse in December of 1908. On Dec. 18, 1908, the first dance was held at the school where $14.25 was raised to be deposited into the school district funds. Classes officially began in the new church in January 1908 with a new teacher, Miss Allan.

The board would meet 14 times in 1908 alone, followed by 10 times in 1909.

The school would be used until 1954, when it was turned into a community centre that was used for several decades.

Approximately 40 riders mounted up for the first stop for the BCMSA (Border Cowboys Mounted Shooters) Summer Series on June 15 and 16 in Innisfree. Some coming from as far as Grand Prairie and other par ts of Alberta and Saskatchewan. The levels included some small wranglers which are under 18 years of age and Men’s and Ladies competition for levels 1-5.

At noon on Friday July 26 at the College Arena and Saturday 27 at 9 a.m., then that same day there will be Showcase of the top shooters at 3 p.m. in front of the grandstand with the heavy horse show.

Members of the Vermilion RCMP met with members of the public at Tim Hor tons in Vermilion during ‘Coffee with a Cop’ on June 18.

People of all ages and backgrounds stopped to visit with Sgt Jane Boehr and Cpl Mike Dunsmore during their time there.

“This event is a way of getting to know people in our community,” said Cpl Dunsmore.

“It ’s a less formal option to meet with members of the public which is les s int imi d at ing for so m e p e o p le and allows individual questions to be addressed. I love my job because I

think it is really about the people and hopefully making a difference,” said Sgt Boehr.

When asked what their most common complaints were, they noted that with the warmer weather, noise, alcohol, and driving complaints are becoming more common as well as property crime in a large, rural area.

“Vermilion is a wholesome community with roots in farming and ranching and a lot of families; some multigenerational,” said Cpl Dunsmore.

When questioned about their uniform, they said that members of the RCMP carry 30 pounds of equipment in their soft body armour which is bullet resistant. Some of the items

When asked if he had ever had to

d eploy his firear m, Cpl Dunsmore said, “Yes. There was a police chase and I had a gun drawn on me and without a doubt, it was scary.”

Overall, everyone enjoyed learning more about one another in a casual setting, even discussing travel and what they love about their community.

Local Girl Wins In Poster Contest

Submitted Nine-year-old Alivia Garnier was in for a big surprise at Clandonald School’s monthly assembly on June 5.

Unknown to her, the Marwayne Legion was in attendance to follow up on their e ar l i er Re m e m br a n c e Day Po s ter Contest awards.

Ear lier this year, the M ar wayne Legion visited Clandonald School to present several awards to Clandonald students for their efforts in the Legion’s

annual essay and poster contest. At that time, Alivia was presented 1st prize in Primary poster, Colour, as well as 1st prize in Primary poster, Black and White. These awards were for the Branch level.

The Legion members’ presence in June, however, indicated that Alivia’s posters had been awarded prizes at even higher levels!

At District Level (27 Legion branches make up the District), Alivia received

1st place for both her Colour and her Black and White posters.

At Command Level (9 Districts – Alberta and NWT Command), Alivia re c e i ve d 1st p l ac e for h er C o l o ur poster, and 2nd place for her Black and White poster.

And finally, at the National Level (10 Commands in Canada – 1400+ Legion Branches), Alivia received 2nd place

for her Colour poster.

This is an exceptional achievement for one young artist! For the Poster Contest, the second and third place winning entries are displayed in the foyer of the House of Commons during the Remembrance period in November.

Community Closet Donates $28,450!

The Vermilion Community Closet donated $28,450 on June 20, to various youth and health organizations in the area.

2645 Vermilion Army Cadets received $250 which will help support members taking their first aid survival training in preparation for a one week survival camp near Bonnyville.

Hearts and Hands was the recipient of $1,200 and representative JoAnn Mones said, “Hearts and Hands is an ongoing outreach initiative so these funds are much appreciated to help people in crisis situations with food and personal needs.”

The Mannville Care Centre was the recipient of $2,000 which will be put towards a gazebo for resident use. $5,000 had been sent to Stars Air Ambulance, which many feel is a critical service in rural areas.

The Friends of Vermilion Health Care Centre was the recipient of $20,000.

These funds will be put towards a Cauterizing machine for outpatients.

Electrocauterization has a number of

uses including surgery, tumor removal, nasal treatment, and wart removal.

“We are so amazed and thankful! We couldn’t get all of the needs of the hospital without the help of generous donors like the Community Closet. It’s surprising how each small purchase adds up to benefit the community greatly,” said representative, Barb Snelgrove.

According to Snelgrove, a surgeon may use this technique to cut through soft tissue so they can gain access to a particular site. Electrocauterization allows your surgeon to seal off blood vessels that are bleeding during surgery.

Sealing off blood vessels helps prevent blood loss and keeps the site clean.

Electrocauterization can also be used to remove abnormal tissue growth, such as a tumor. This approach is common for growths located in sensitive areas that are difficult to reach, such as your brain. If a person gets frequent nosebleeds, they are likely being caused by an exposed blood vessel in your nose.

Their doctor may recommend this type of treatment even if their nose isn’t bleeding at the time they seek medical advice.

Wart removal usually only requires one

electrocauterization treatment and is frequently used to treat genital warts or warts on other areas of the body.

The Community Closet noted that they have been on Facebook for the past couple of years @thecommunityclosetvermilion and even make some of their sales that way.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer these donations; I can’t believe it!,” said volunteer Rose Hardy.

“We’re thankful for all of the generous donations and shoppers that we receive from near and far so that we are able to give back,” added volunteer Val Wynnychuk.

Submitted O t t aw a - S h a n n o n S t u b b s , t h e Member of Parliament for Lakeland and Conservative Shadow Minister for Natural Resources, provided her reaction to the Liberals re-approving the Trans Mountain Expansion for the third time – without providing a firm date for when construction will begin: “For months I said the Liberals needed to provide a concrete plan to ensure the Trans Mountain Expansion will be built.

The Liberals’ announcement yesterday

confirms they have no plan. Prime Minister Trudeau could not answer basic questions, like what day construction will start, when construction will be completed, or how much it will cost taxpayers. The Liberals did not even secure the federal permits from the environment, fisheries and transport departments required for construction to begin. And there was no plan to deal with the legal challenges that groups who have always been opposed to the Trans Mountain Expansion will launch in a matter of days.

“After three and a half years in government and over two and a half years since the Liberals approved the Trans Mountain Expansion the first time, this project is no further ahead. All that changed is that taxpayers are on the hook for any cost overruns. There is no firm construction timeline and no plan to ensure shovels get in the ground this summer.

“It would be utter insanity for the Liberals to have rejected the Trans Mountain Expansion after spending $4.5 billion dollars a year ago to buy the existing

Trans Mountain pipeline. The Finance Minister promised last May the Liberals purchased the pipeline so that construction on the Expansion could start, ‘immediately,’ but not a centimeter of new pipeline is in the ground.

“When it comes to supporting hard-hit oil and gas workers, this Liberal Prime Minister is not as advertised. Andrew Scheer and the Conservative team have a plan to get pipelines built and to help families who rely on energy jobs get ahead.”

On June 18, Grade 1 went for a walk around town to see the different historical buildings. They first stopped outside of the Imperial Block to look at the bricks made from the clay of the Vermilion River.

Then they went to CIBC to the historical site. They enjoyed an outside picnic lunch at the Cenotaph Park. They then ventured to the Farmer’s Market to see the different vendors. Flint Honey gave each student a taste test of their honey, as the Grade 1 students are learning about the importance of bees. Also a huge thank you to David Rein for giving each child a button pin.

The Grade 4B class had a lot of fun this week dyeing fabric. The pieces will be combined to make a quilt to give away to a worthy cause. A special thank you to Mrs. Stredwick.

Mrs. MacMillan culled books from the Library Learning Commons and displayed them in the hallway. Staff and students got

to go through them and choose books on a first come first served basis. This was to make room for the nearly 750 books that have been added to the Learning Commons this year.

This is my first year and I’m nine years old.

Mid-field because I like being in the action.

The jersey would be pink with a hamster image on it. We would be called the ‘Hamster Awesome’ team for a name.

5. Do you watch soccer on T.V? Who is your favourite team/player?

No I don’t watch soccer on TV. My favorite team is the Vermilion Purple Strikers.

6. Many professional players have a lucky charm/piece of clothing/special dance they wear/preform either before or after a game.

What’s your lucky token or superstition?7. Why do you like soccer?

My lucky charm would be to wear a red Canada shirt.

Yes, I like to practice soccer in my spare time with my best friends and family.

Two of six Vermilion youth were presented the 2019 Linda Webb Jacobson Scholarship on June 18, at St. Jerome’s School.

Recipients were Adisen Poff, Mya Wilson, Aiyana Thompson, Rachel Campbell, Londyn Galbraith, and Ava Underhill.

As President of Allied Arts for many years, Linda, with her Council members, kept Vermilion as a destination for performers who enriched Vermilion’s cultural scene. Linda’s consistent leadership and dedication for over 30 years provided the

foundation for Vermilion Allied Arts today.

Jake Jacobson and his daughter Chris are pleased to offer a cheque to each of the successful applicants to support their summer opportunities.

Recipients will be attending summer dance camps which include Harbour Dance Centre in Vancouver, Shape’s “The Project” Summer Dance Camp in Vermilion, “To the Pointe” Summer Dance Camp in Calgary, and “Trans4M” Dance Intensive in Los Angeles, California.

Order Of The Eastern Star - Official Visit

The Vermilion Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star hosted an Official Visit of the Grand Matron and Grand Patron of Alberta at the Mason Star Hall on June 18.

Both Worthy Grand Patron of Alberta, Hector van Vierssen Trip, from Calgary and Worthy Grand Matron of Alberta, Order of the Easter Star – Susan MacArthur, from Fort McMurray had been installed on June 9, and have since been making visits to each chapter around the province.

This year, the Grand Matron selected BC & Alberta Guide Dogs as her charity.

“The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world that both men and women can belong to.

Most people can find a Masonic member somewhere in their family history in order to be a member. One common prerequisite is a belief in a supreme being. It is a social organization, bringing together people with common values, and provides opportunities for them to meet, interact, and do good work for the benefit of society.

Each individual chapter and the Grand Chapter all have their own charitable organizations to support. Since 1987 in Alberta, the Order of the Eastern Star Foundation has contributed $1.4 million with over $600,000 going to Alzheimer’s research, over $400,000 to religious scholarships for training, and the remainder split between five other charities with all funds remaining in Alberta,” said Worthy Grand Patron, Hector van Vierssen Trip.

Worthy Grand Matron, Susan MacArthur, said that members celebrated throughout the day with a tea, school of instruction, dinner, and formal meeting.

“At the last Grand Chapter meeting on June 7, we contributed $110,000 to Alberta charities that had been collected throughout the past year. Typically there is a long history with this philanthropic group. I was previously privileged to hand out an 80-year certificate and pin to a member, 102 years old. Vermilion’s Worthy Matron, June Carr from Cold Lake, will be receiving her 50-year pin next year,” said Worthy Grand Matron, Susan MacArthur.

The Order of the Eastern Star operates in 40 countries around the world, began in Alberta in 1912, and was founded in 1859 in Mississippi. It is an affiliate of the Freemasons which started in 1717 in London, England as an organization of brothers.

Keeping Cows In Good Condition When Pasture Is Limited

Supplimenting cows is an option to maintain or improve their condition when pasture conditions are poor.

“Feeding cows was a balancing act last winter,” says Barry Yaremcio, beef and forage specialist at the Alberta Ag - Info Centre. “ Lower feed qual ity, limited feed supplies and the use of non-traditional feeds made it challenging to keep cows in good condition both pre and post calving prior to turn out onto spring pastures.“ Nutritional requirements of a cow is highest the first 12 weeks after calving, and Yaremcio says that it is difficult to have cows gain weight during this time.

“The first step to address weight gain is to make sure that forage availability is high. If forage growth is less than about 1500 (lb.) pound per acre of forage mass, a cow cannot eat enough to meet her dry matter intake needs.” “ That amount looks like roughly one bale per acre of forage cut at one inch above ground level. This is how severely cows can graze a pasture.”

He adds that early season pasture growth typically has more than adequate amounts of protein to meet requirements, but with insuf ficient amounts of energy to promote weight

gain. “ With poor pasture conditions in many parts of the province, supplementing cows is an option to maintain or improve cow condition. It can result in improved reproductive efficiency and calf growth rate. It will also reduce the number of pounds of fresh grass the cows need to consume on a daily basis, which stretches the available forage supply.”

“Supplying a higher energy feedstuff such as barley or oat grain at five to six lb. per head at least three times a week will improve total energy intake and improve digestive efficiency compared to a straight forage diet,” explains Yaremcio.

“By feeding six lb. of grain per head, 25% of the energ y re quirement is provided by the grain and fresh grass consumption is reduced by 35 to 40 lb. per head per feeding. Feeding the grain should be done midafternoon or towards evening. The grain can be fed on the ground but it is important to spread out the grain in windrows or in piles so that all animals have equal access to the grain at the same time.”

By- pro d u c t fe e d s su c h as gr ain screening pellets, bakery waste, cull potatoes, or distillers’ grains can be another source for animals on pasture.

“Consider cost, availability of the product and hauling distance when evaluating the overall usefulness of the alternate feed. Concerns with importing weed seeds is a consideration when using screening pellets.”

He notes that most of the by-product feeds contain higher amounts of phosphorus, and it may be necessary to increase the calcium and magnesium content to provide a balanced mineral program.

“Calves at 45 to 50 days of age have a digestive system that can digest grains very efficiently,” says Yaremcio. “These animals can consume two to three lb. of grain per day, which reduces the demand for milk from the cow.”
