Vermilion and Clandonald 4-H Beef Clubs showcased their animals throughout the event during showmanship and confirmation classes.

“It’s been a great day. We appreciate all of the support from the community and seeing all of the Interclub members helping one another,” said Vermilion General leader, Kris Lehmann.

The announcer noted that there were some of the best cattle in the country, and thanked local businesses and prospective buyers. He also noted that by supporting these children, that they would be subsequently supporting their community and their education.

Pet Boutique & Salon – Grand Opening

Pet lovers gathered at the Pet Boutique & Salon to celebrate their Grand Opening in Vermilion on June 1.

Owners Carolyn Green and Kelsey McNutt were thrilled to welcome dignitaries and guests on their special day. They have been open and serving people and

their pets since January 7.

“It has been very exciting and the community has been fantastic with their support.

There are so many great dogs around here that come in,” said Carolyn Green.

Guests relaxed and enjoyed hamburgers and hotdogs as well as cookies and cupcakes. Some came with their pets, and the animals were the highlight for both

guests and owners. Customers clearly appreciate the high level of care they receive.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Pet Boutique & Salon for their leadership and courage; showing confidence in investing in our community. We would like to wish them the best of success,” said Councillor Justin Thompson.

The retail and grooming location offers everything from food to giftware. They have enjoyed working with local entrepreneurs as well as ones from Lloydminster, Fort McMurray, and Sylvan Lake. In addition, they encourage people to check out what all they offer and look forward to continuing to serve the community.

Denny the dog showcased a creative cut/ colour during the Grand Opening on June 1. Tidy up grooms and breed cuts are also available at the Pet Boutique and Salon.

Nelson George Tyler April 13, 2019 The family of Nelson Tyler would like to thank all the special friends and family who helped with our father’s care and final celebration of his life, Dr. Maulud for her care and compassion, the staff at the Vermilion Lodge and the Vermilion Hospital for their great care.

Thanks to Doug Livingstone, our long time neighbour and friend for hosting master of ceremony duties. Zigmund "Zig" Hegedus Zigmund passed away on May 28, 2019 in Vermilion, Alberta at the age of 90 years.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Joan Hegedus; children Gloria (Kerry) Sikora, Randy Hegedus, and Gorden (Debra) Hegedus; grandchildren Candace (Mike) Petruk, Chantel Sikora,Trina Sikora, Kendra (Trevor) Brost, Katelyn Hegedus (Derek Gower), Travis Hegedus, Danielle (Cole) Hardes, and Deanna Hegedus (Clint Slack); and great grandchildren Kali, Kayson, Kassidy, Lincoln, Payton, Dawson, Beckett, Asher, Tate, Jackson, and Derek.

He was predeceased by his brothers Jim Hegedus and John Hegedus; and daughter in law Carla Hegedus.

A Funeral Service was held at the Dewberry Hall on Monday, June 3, 2019.

Running Across Canada – ‘Million Bottle Pledge’

O n h i s j o u r n ey r u n n i n g a c r o s s Canada and collecting bot tles and gar bage, Andrew Sward, travelled past Vermilion on May 27.

This being his third trip across the countr y, he originally had a plan to leave a minimal carbon footprint in 2013. He then travelled with a solar panel, using no hotel stays and no support vehicle. After a couple of days on the road, he began picking up tin cans to reduce, reuse, and recycle as many as he could carry. Now he donates bottles and cans to organizations in towns across the country. He asks about bottle drives in each town and in between stops at rest stops and puts them in the blue bins.

the first time, as he stopped to work in Ontario for the winter. In 2015, he began a return trip to clean the other side of the highway gathering 36,000 bottles. He began to think maybe he could clean a million bottles over the next 30 years.

This year, he began his journey in Vancouver, British Columbia in late April and plans to reach Newfoundland by the end of September. So far he has travelled 1500 - 1600 kilometers.

He mentioned that he felt tougher on his first trip and will now treat himself to a hotel stay every couple of weeks as he is pushing 48 years old. He is very grateful to have friends in each province and said, “Across the country there is a great running community.”

Sward now also disposes of other b ever ag e c u p s (p a p er c of fe e /p o p cups). Last time he cleaned along the Trans Canada Highway, and this time is travelling along Highway 16, and other routes in Ontario and the Maritimes.

“I grew up in Ontario of ten looking out the car window and think it is a shame that now people look out their windows and have garbage in the way of their view. In the future, I will consider spending shorter trips each year in one dedicated province.

Hopefully, future drivers will think twice. It is a big change for me after working for the winter. This is my happy

place. I have developed a big love of Canada; it’s a beautiful way to see the country and I’ve gotten to meet a lot of people along the way. I am excited for the upcoming towns,” said Sward.

He enc ourages people c leaning their towns, parks, and roads and noted how much cleaner the highways in Alber ta were due to recent 4 - H cleanups.

This week is Seniors week and I see it fitting to acknowledge and salute the Seniors of our communities.

The Seniors of our communities are the ones who helped shape and build our town to what it is today. They are the ones who went through the many hardships back in the day and therefore should be held in the highest respect.

This is one of my favourite recipes.

When you are cooking this Greek marinated meat, your kitchen will smell like a high-end Greek restaurant. This is a delicious and easy way to prepare meat.

You can use beef, pork, or chicken.

You can also use wild meat such as elk, moose or venison. If you are using game, be sure to cut off all the fat, as the fat carries the gamey flavour. I have made this with both farmed meat and game with excellent results. You can also use this recipe for Greek ribs.

The Seniors Of Our Community

to our community, they offer a vast amount of knowledge to our younger generations and they often volunteer in many important social activities which benefits seniors mentally, socially and physically; so the next time you see a senior volunteer be sure to stop and have a chat, it can mean a lot to them and they c an tell you some pret t y awesome stories.

Many seniors still work part-time in our communities because they can’t af fo r d to l i ve o n t h e a m o u nt t h ey receive from the government each month and while it fills positions others may not want I truly believe that at their

age they shouldn’t have to work just to be able to survive.

I think our politicians need to try and live on that measly amount and see how well they do!! I think it is time to stand up and do something about it.

Social isolation can be quite common among seniors. It is sometimes caused by various factors, such as being on a fixed income and difficulty with mobility and overall health.

Sometimes seniors don’t have family living nearby so the next time you are wondering what to do why not go visit some of the seniors in our community at the supportive houses or continuing care facilities, it can make a day brighter for someone who has given so much to our community already.

This week especially let’s all take the time to recognize and appreciate the seniors of our communities.

At least for one spring weekend a year going back to probably the midEighties, beyond fair time that is, a trio of brothers from different mothers make an across Alberta pilgrimage back to good old V-town to hang out and act like the same kids and first cousins they were when they grew up and ended up going to school together, all in the same grade.

I started my first two years out in the country at Woodvale School and joined them in Grade 3 on the front steps at the old red brick S.R.P. Cooper School that

is now our town museum. Now you might think here, man, am I old…and also think if those ingredients were a recipe it might have meant immediate commencement to troublemaking and maybe it was, sort of. I used to think I was the moderating influence in the trio, being the oldest by a month, but lately thinking my influence is decidedly lacking and resulting in the creation of monsters beyond my control.

Living too far apart now I guess…as I distinctly remember a Grade 10 Physics class (poor Mr. Miller…) where we sat together at the very back of the classroom and it played out rather unsatisfactorily as I remember, at least for my usual standard, in the report cards. No offense boys….but I had to make other plans for

It didn’t help that amongst all our many older cousins, we were probably born closest together and it seemed like most weekends we were spending time over at each other’s houses, first playing out in the sand box aka the dirt in front of the garden, with Tonka trucks and metal John Deere combine toys (still wish I had those around). Between that and graduation it was games of playing War and Anti-I-Over, hunting gophers in the coulee, shelling peas from the AWNA garden, fishing trips to Long (Kehewin) Lake, Atari, and marathons sessions of Basic Dungeons & Dragons. I suppose if it wasn’t for our mutual bond, our childhoods would have been far less inter-

esting. Even though all three of us had brothers…my sense was that we seemed to mix with them on our interests somewhat like oil and water. So a trip to either Aunt’s house was not missed…perhaps if not precipitated by pleading, begging, or whatever adolescent social engineering experiment could be accomplished that we could get away with across party line telephones. So it was this last weekend we were back together again as we annually have done, hanging out in our old haunts, doing the same old things…

The Great Cattle Dip

In July of 1919, due to dry weather, thousands of cattle were ordered to be rounded up in the Earlie district and taken to a cattle dip near Earlie Lake. Southern Alberta was dealing with drought conditions and mange had begun to appear in cattle that had been brought up from there. Four large ranches, the Fredericks, Oldenburg, Kennedy and Davis ranches all had cattle that had dipped, along with cattle that had grazed within five miles of the diseased cattle.

A ditch of four feet wide, 30 feet long and eight feet deep was made beside the lake, with lake providing plenty of water for the dip. The entire ditch was covered with planks of wood, along with along the sides. It was then filled

with water and the water had Sulphur and lime added. George Ronaghan was also on hand with a steam tractor to help keep the water warm.

Cattle were then brought along and corralled and driven one at a time into the water. The cattle were completely immersed in the water, with their heads pushed under to ensure every inch was covered.

This process was a long and difficult one. To help the cowboys, a cookhouse was set up but when the cook ran out of meat, a cow was chosen by the cowboys for eating. It was then cooked and served to the hungry workers.

No matter which direction you came from, you could see long lines of cows all heading towards the dip. One individual, Tom Souder, said it was the largest gathering of cowboys and cattle he had ever seen.

The County of Minburn No. 27 Agricultural Service Board will once again be operating a Roadside Spraying Program for the control of noxious weeds and brush in the 2019 season. If you do not wish to have spraying completed adjacent to your property, “DO NOT SPRAY BETWEEN SIGNS” signs are available from the Agricultural Service Board office. There is no charge for these signs however landowners are responsible to erect and maintain them on their property.

A reminder, however, that if a landowner does not want adjacent road allowance sprayed, the landowner will accept full responsibility for noxious weed/brush control on said road allowance, in accordance with County bylaw 714 – 1973.

Seniors’ Week Op-Ed Submitted Alberta has a strong, active, and growing seniors population over 600,000 strong. These seniors are vital members of our communities and they make a difference in our daily lives.

Seniors’ Week in Alberta, which runs from June 2 to 8, 2019, is a perfect opportunity for all Albertans to honour and highlight seniors’ contributions to our province. This week, individuals, families and communities gather to celebrate seniors.

The generations before us worked tirelessly to build the Alberta Advantage. Seniors developed Alberta into a

key engine of Canada’s economy. They powered the entire country.

Today’s seniors are active. They live longer, healthier lives, while continuing to support their communities by volunteering. In fact, Alberta seniors contributed 32 million volunteer hours in a single year. In economic terms, those volunteer hours are worth more than $680 million.

Seniors have served their families, friends and neighbours for a lifetime.

They should always feel they are valued members of our province.

Our government believes in respecting and supporting Alberta seniors, their

families, and caregivers, by providing a variety of programs and services to help seniors continue living in their chosen communities. We will work hard every day to make Alberta the best place in North America to live, work, start a business – and to retire.

Supporting seniors is not a role for one community, organization or government. Civil society groups and other senior-serving organizations support the growing seniors demographic. Caregiving For A Loved One? Look To Your Thank you to all our Pharmacy For Support Seniors

(NC) Caring for a family member or friend with a health issue can be a challenging and often overwhelming responsibility. But if you’re one of the 8.1 million Canadians who are untrained and unpaid, yet responsible for care, you know exactly what this involves.

With the new Caregiver Friendly Pharmacy Program now available, caregivers can confidently connect with local pharmacists who have been specially trained to support them and address the many questions and issues they may have.

Through education tools, an online caregiver support network and a collection of other resources, the program can help caregivers navigate the terrain of care, support their own well-being, and advocate for their loved ones with increased knowledge, confidence and assistance from their pharmacy team.

“The program takes a unique approach by recognizing the burden of caregivers – many of whom must give up their jobs to assume responsibilities they just don’t have the training to do,” says Iris Krawchenko, a pharmacist consultant and caregiver to her own elderly p a r e n t . “ We s e e caregivers in pharmacies every day, in every region, and this program provides a

tremendous opportunity for pharmacists to start a dialogue, offer education, provide guidance and build trusted relationships over time.”

The 2018 Canadian Carers Pulse Survey revealed that seven in 10 Canadians feel that caregivers are overlooked or under-supported by the current healthcare system. Given that more than 80 per cent of caregivers pick up medications for loved ones, pharmacists were identified as a critical healthcare provider whom caregivers and their loved ones see more often that physicians, specialists and other members of the healthcare team.

“Our healthcare system is stretched for time and resources and pharmacists are no different,” says Krawchenko. “But when

On Tuesday, May 28 the Grade 2 and Grade 3 class walked down to the Vermilion Public Library to spend the morning learning about magnets and insects. The students completed different experiments and created static electricity with balloons.

They also were able to touch a stick bug

and hissing cockroach and learn all about lifecycles.

The Grade 2 classes spent the af ternoon at the Public Library on May 28. On this field trip, students participated in various activities that linked to their science curriculum. During the Magnetism p r e s e nt at i o n, s tu d e nt s d i s c u s s e d and experimented with a variety of magnets. Small Crawling and Flying animals was the second topic which provided the students with the opportunity to observe, touch and discover more about the world of insects and arachnids.

On May 28, the Grade 4 classes traveled to the Royal Alberta Museum for a tour of the Natural History Gallery and exploration time of the Human History Gallery, the Bug Gallery, and the Viking exhibit. There were many hands-on opportunities for students to explore.

They were able to create mountains and volcanoes, dress in Viking clothing, practice rowing a Viking ship, write in runes on a stone, experience wildlife from the different ecological areas of Alberta, and dance like a ruffed grouse.

Students were able to handle, observe and hypothesize about real museum artifacts and create a museum display.

The opportunity to see the Manitou Stone was a special treat. Mr. Haslehurst and Ms. Birch were especially thank ful for the tremendous parent support shown during the field trip.

Butterflies are in the air. The Grade 2 classes have been so excited to get their caterpillars. They watched as

Interact Club - Long Table Supper

Interact Club members eagerly served approximately 200 people at the 2nd Annual Long Table Supper in Vermilion on May 30.

Local youth established the club and

proposed the idea for the long table supper last year, aiming to bring more awareness of the Interact Club to the community.

Operating under the umbrella of the Vermilion Rotary Club, the Interact Club is designed to bring together youth (aged

12-18) to develop leadership skills while discovering the power of ‘Service Above Self’.

This year, proceeds went to support the Vermilion Ice Plant, and Interact members said that they would like to thank the community for the support. Youth Interact

Representatives noted that 4-H builds leadership in youth, and several different clubs each teaching them a variety of skills.
