St. Jerome’s School in Vermilion hosted an Indigenous Celebration Day on May 10.

Creeland Dancers gave a jigging/ square dance presentation, and the Poundmaker Singers gave a drum presentation.

Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to participate in sessions such as drum teaching, bannock making, Cree language, Inuit games, artifacts, jingle dance, story-telling and tipi teachings.

“It’s been a great day; the children had the opportunity to learn a lot and it has given us great exposure to many different aspects of indigenous culture,” said St. Jerome’s assistant principal, Allan MacMillan.

Preston Gamble, from Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation, explained that there are different styles of drum songs,

and that by carrying on this information, he was able to educate his children. His children followed by singing a contemporary Cree song.

Emery John, from Thunderchild First Nation, enjoyed teaching children about jingle dress styles and regalia.

“I got them involved with my dance which was nice, and they all did so well,” said Emery John.

At the end of the day presenters and audience members celebrated together by participating in a Round Dance. Overall everyone enjoyed the social activities and learning about Indigenous cultures.

Mental Health Art Gala

Over 500 people attended the 7th Annual VIBE Mental Health Art Gala at the Vermilion Regional Centre on May 7.

Hundreds of works of art were on display from students of all ages including; drawing, painting, mixed media, and hand crafted projects all detailing aspects of mental health. Families travelled from Mannville, Vermilion, Kitscoty, Innisfree and Clandonald to attend and enjoyed the evening full of activities. Children had the opportunity to make a stress ball with volunteers from the Vermilion and Area Crisis Line, decorate masks and superhero capes, etc.; while adults had the opportunity to paint a tile. The Vermilion and Area Early Childhood Coalition provided several resources, and Mayor of Vermilion, Caroline McAuley promoted the block party kit on behalf of the Town of Vermilion and the Vermilion Wellness Coalition.

“Mental health impacts everybody.

What’s amazing about this event is that it really shows positive ways to improve

and support mental health,” said Mayor McAuley.

This year’s theme was ‘The World of Beliefs,’ and while participating in activities, browsing the selection of artwork and listening to live piano music, people of all ages increased their awareness of mental wellness and reduced the stigma of mental illness.

“It’s just fun!” said Meyer Lorenson.

New this year and much appreciated were featured artists from the Islay Care Centre. Many also enjoyed making a medicine wheel which was sponsored by the Human Rights Education and Multiculturalism Fund and encouraged participants to better understand qualities about themselves and promote mental health wellness. Partners also included FCSS groups from Mannville-Minburn-Innisfree, Kitscoty, Vermilion, and the County of Vermilion River.

Top Canadian Cyclist From Vermilion

Vermilion’s Alison Jackson has just been ranked the top female Canadian cyclist in the world, currently sitting 27th.

She has spent the past two years racing on an elite women’s circuit in Europe and the United States with Team Tibco - Silicon Valley Bank, a California based team.

“This has been my best season yet!

My first podium this year was 3rd place in Yorkshire, United Kingdom and I look forward to racing there again during the World Championships at the end of the year. In my second year on the team they have provided me with a lot of opportunity to win races. They really support my Olympic dream and are sending me to all the races that I need in order to qualify for the Canadian Olympic team!” said Jackson.

She enjoyed a recent visit with family and friends and went on to say that she appreciates the community taking interest and sharing her story. She also noted that as a small, prairie town Vermilion has had a lot of big athletes.

“When I was a child it seemed bigger, and the journey has been way different than I could have ever imagined. We grew up in a great place, and often have a lot of support from the community. Don’t sell yourself short; you can accomplish a big dream,” said Jackson.

She explained that as a cyclist there a lot of other races along the way that are really important to be a part of or win; but with the Olympics that everyone across the country can be a part of it, all rooting for Canada.

“It’s really hard to qualify for the Olympics. Now when I’m really close it actually seems attainable. Even five years ago it seemed to be a far off dream, but the goal now is to get on the Olympic team for 2020!” said Jackson.

She sympathized that professional cycling is something that not many people are familiar with, but encouraged that all of the women’s tour races can be watched live on flobikes.com. Anyone interested can follow her on Instagram or social media, or find out more on Youtube.

Mashed potatoes and gravy are always a meal favourite. The best gravy comes from the dripping of cooking a turkey, chicken, roast beef or pork. Unfortunately with so many people working, we are not always home for several hours to roast some meat. You can make home gravy easily with a good quality beef broth. Look for one that does not have anodized yeast extract, which is another name for monosodium glutamate, also known as MSG. Try to find one that only has beef

broth, salt and spices. There are also beef bouillon cubes, which some people use to make gravy but if you take a close look at the ingredients, it is a chemical alphabet soup.

Our bodies don’t need chemicals. We need real food.

Homemade gravy is not only for mashed potatoes, it can also be used for home made fries, poutine and noodles. Noodles and gravy is a favourite in many cultures. You can also fry up some hamburger and onions, and then add a half a cup of water to bring up the drippings and then add homemade gravy to create your own hamburger helper. Pour over any type of pasta. For variations you can add to the hamburger mixture, chopped

celery, garlic, red peppers and spices of your choice. I find that the flavour of the beef broth does make a difference, so may have to try a few different brands to find your favourite.

You can of course make your own by roasting beef bones adding water, 2 tablespoons vinegar, seasoning, such as onion, carrot, salt and pepper. After several hours of roasting, covered, strain the broth and use it for soups and gravy. The vinegar is added to pull the beneficial mineral from the bones into the broth.

Here is a handy little recipe to have in your recipe drawer. Just have some canned or packaged beef broth in your pantry and you are ready to create great meals in minutes.

If you do roast some meat, use the drippings to make the gravy. I have several other ways that I make gravy, but this one is just so handy.

Homemade Gravy (4 servings) 3 1/2 Tablespoons butter 3 1/2 Tablespoons flour 2 cups of beef broth Salt and pepper to taste.

In a heavy bottomed saucepan, melt the butter, add the flour and stir until it is bubbling ( this helps cook and flavor the raw flour). Slowly add the broth stirring continually. Do not add it all at once, or you will have very lumpy gravy. Cook stirring until thickened.

“The CRTC has set targets for broadband of 50 Mbps download and 10Mbps upload. We are the first provider in the majority of our service area to accomplish this. Our 50Mbps plans are the start of a new, higher level of service for small towns or rural areas. By 2021, CCL Networks goal is to provide 100Mbps + speeds to small towns and rural areas.

We are constantly looking for areas to expand our service to! We are currently working with the County of Vermilion River to co-locate equipment on a few of the county owned existing towers,” said Ostertag.

In the very early years of Vermilion, the quest was on to get homesteaders to come out to the area and to settle in and near the community. In an effort to do that, the Ten Thousand Club of Vermilion put together a book that highlighted the great things about the area.

The purpose of this short book was to, as the club states in it, to put out information about Vermilion, to attract settlers, to provide a means of answering inquiries about the area and to express the public spirit of the citizens of Vermilion.

Here is a brief glimpse of how booster residents of Vermilion touted the community in 1912.

One of the first things the club wrote about was that the climate in Vermilion was no worse than that in Toronto.

“On a typical cold winter day, when the thermometer is at zero, no more clothing is needed than is worn in Toronto, Chicago or New York,” the book stated. In addition, the authors state that the snowfall in the Vermilion area is very light, and less than any other place in Canada except for the Pacific Coast.

When describing Vermilion itself, the book states that the Canadian Northern Railway reached Vermilion in 1906, putting the town on the map. In 1912, the stated population is 1,200 and the authors write “Vermilion has had no booms and wants none. It seeks men and women who are attracted to it by its splendid location and wonderful natural resources.” At the time, the book states that a Municipal Electric Lighting Plant was now providing power to 1,000 lights in the community. As well, the community now had a long-distance phone connection, and a $40,000 public school building where five teachers teach 150

students. The fire hall was also stated to have a new $26,000 firefighting apparatus.

When writing about what Vermilion needed, the authors of the book state that real farmer are needed who are willing to take a small piece of land and who will practice intensive farming. Up-to-date merchants were also requested who can cater to the well-to-do farmers who are in need of items. Lastly, the authors asked that industries such as a sash and door factory, makers of wagons, steam laundry, a cheese factory, oatmeal mill and cereal factory, along with a packing plant, look at coming to the community.

Lastly, here are some interesting facts touted by the authors of the book to entice people to move to the district.

In 1911, Vermillion shipped 300 cars of livestock and estimated they would ship 500 cars of livestock in 1912.

The flour mill in Vermilion is capable of producing 125 barrels of flour per day.

Vermilion had five churches in 1912.

FCSS In Vermilion Turns 50!

Submitted Invited guests and FCSS partners will celebrate on Wednesday, May 15 with an anniversary luncheon at the Vermilion Regional Centre. Family and Community Support Services started in Vermilion in 1969 under a different name, Preventative Social Services. Regardless of the program name, it has remained a partnership between municipalities and the provincial government. There is no other Canadian province with FCSS. The funding formula is based on the most recent population census; 80% provincial funding and a minimum of 20% from each participating municipality. The 1969 Vermilion Town Council under the Mayor Charles T. Heckbert signed on believing it would assist community human service programs for our residents. The town started with a budget of $421.24 for FCSS. Today over $100,000 is

dispersed to human service agencies and projects.

The purpose of the FCSS program is to support locally driven social initiatives that enhance the well-being of individuals and families through community programs, not individuals or families. FCSS has nothing to do with child welfare or monthly payments to low income families. Some Vermilion FCSS program recipients include Premura Counseling/Catholic Social Services, Senior Support resources, Vermilion & Area Brighter Beginnings, Vermilion Play Development, VIBE Mental Health project, Family School Liaison, Vermilion Kiddie Oasis, Walking Through Grief Society, Health and Wellness Conference, Family Rhyme Time (offered by CLASS Vermilion River Adult Learning), Lloydminster Interval Home, Lloydminster Sexual Assault & Information Centre, as well as FCSS staff

participating in numerous other community projects. FCSS has advocated for community programs and services that will help individuals and families thrive.

Each municipality decides on the FCSS social initiatives they fund and operate the program in the way that works best for the community. FCSS is responsive to their unique community needs. In Vermilion, the FCSS program fulfills a supportive role to human service agencies or projects by disbursing funding or providing staff support to a project. The only direct program provided in Vermilion is senior support which is jointly funded by Vermilion, County of Vermilion River, and the Villages of Paradise Valley, Kitscoty, Marwayne, Dewberry.

The following community members have been appointed by Town Council for the FCSS Advisory Committee: Darla Yonk-

man, Veronica Peterson, Lori-Ann Stenhouse, Valerie Richards, Derek Collins, Andrew Kinoti Lairenge, and Councillor Greg Barr. We currently have two adult vacancies and two youth (Grade 10 student) vacancies on this committee. Anyone with an interest in community services is welcome to join us by sending a letter to the FCSS Coordinator, Carol Coleman at email ccoleman@vermilion.ca. Vermilion Ukrainian Dance – Open House

The Vermilion Ukrainian Dance Association held an Open House at the Vermilion Regional centre on May 8. Those interested in joining had the opportunity to go try a class and find out what it is all about.

Dancers of all ages tried new warm up games and group stretches that incorpo-

rated social bonding exercises and counting in Ukrainian.

“My daughter Ayla is always excited to come here; she’s made friends and has a lot of fun! She loves the helpers and the instructors are so friendly,” said Jacqie Carek.

Overall, the organization was thrilled to have new and existing families come out and take part.

Upcoming Lions CNIB Golf Tournament

The Vermilion Lions Club will be h o s t i n g t h e ir 2 2n d A n nu a l Texa s Scramble Golf Tournament at the Vermilion Golf and Country Club on June 7, at 1 p.m.

T h e Ve r m i l i o n L i o n s C l u b i s thrilled to be hosting the tournament o n c e ag ain to su p p or t the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) and Canadians with vision loss. According to cnib.ca, one out of every six Canadians, (5.5 million) have one of four major eye diseases; glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy or macular degeneration and have either lost their sight or are at risk to in the future. They also say that ever y 10 minutes someone in Canada begins losing their sight, and that each year, 50,000 Canadians will lose their sight which significantly impacts their well being and quality of life.

According to CNIB, only one third of Canadian working-age adults with vision loss are employed, and about half of the ones who are employed struggle to make ends meet on

$20,000 or less. People over 60 with sight loss are three times more likely to experience clinical depression, and all people with sight loss are at greater risk of social isolation and reduced community participation.

The CNIB celebrated their 100th Anniver sar y last year af ter being founded in 1918 by veterans who were blinded in World War I and the Halifax Explosion. CNIB aspires to continue working to shape a brighter future for Canadians with sight loss by increasing access to employment and technology, advocating for more accessible communities, and connecting more Canadians with guide dogs. “ Eve r y ye a r we a r e p l e a s a n t l y surprised by the suppor t of the community and hope to continue that again this year,” said organizer Cliff Rolheiser.

The first Monday in May as been recognized provincially as Bus Driver Appreciation Day. VES students made and signed a large poster and held it up as the bus drivers pulled in on the morning of May 6.

As well, Miss Barlow’s 1B students made thank you cards for the drivers. VES would like to take this time to thank the bus drivers for all they do in safely getting our children to and from school on a daily basis. You are amazing.

Also, on May 6, VES students joined St. Jerome’s Grade 1-5 students on the tennis courts between the two schools.

We celebrated Music Monday by singing Hymn to Freedom by Oscar Peterson. This annual event happens on the first Monday of May and unites Canada in song. All musical Canadians are given a common song and are to sing or play it at 11:00am our time, therefore making it such that all Canadians are performing the same song at the same time.

After singing the song, students got their annual, once-a-year, play together time in the two playgrounds.

2019 Parkland Herptile BioBlitz - Want to Help Conserve Amphibians?

Submitted The third Parkland Herptile BioBlitz is planned for the May long-weekend (18-20th). This is your chance to be a Citizen Scientist-Biologist and help with the conservation of our intriguing amphibians. The target species for the call surveys include three species at risk (two toads and one frog) and two other frogs which are common. Observations (because they don’t call) of salamanders, gartersnakes and gartersnake hibernacula are also appreciated.

We are recruiting participants for an evening or two. The surveys start after sunset and continue until midnight or 1:00. “You pick a stretch of quiet rural road that has adjacent water bodies including shallow/deep ponds, creeks,

lakes, the Battle River and its tributary creeks, or you can survey the wet areas of your land if you live on a farm” said BioBlitz coordinator Darcey Shyry, an Instructor of Environmental Sciences at Lakeland College in Vermilion. It’s the breeding season for amphibians so they’re loudly calling from breeding sites where they will then lay their eggs.

BioBlitz participants simply listen for calling frogs and toads along quiet rural roads or at waterbodies on their land for 3 minutes and record the species they hear. The calls are easy to remember and not easy to confuse with any other sounds except for the Wood Frog, which sounds more like a duck than most ducks (it quacks). The calls of our frogs and toads can be heard on the Parkland Herptile BioBlitz Facebook

page and at the Amphibians of Manitoba website (www.naturenorth.com).

This year Lakeland College and the Alberta Amphibian and Reptile Conservancy have agreed to a partnership, so biologists from Lakeland and the AARC will help coordinate participants.

Feedback from previous BioBlitz’s is that participants have a sense of satisfaction knowing that their efforts will help the conservation of our wildlife when given the opportunity. It is truly wonderful to fall asleep to the sounds of the frogs and toads in the spring.

As people get busier attendance is dwindling down a bit needless to say with lots going on at the centre.

Want some exercise join other curlers for fun and exercise, coffee always follows.

The Senior choir, the Harmonizers meet every Tuesday at 2 p.m. and this past week the choir went to Lloydminster to join other neighboring choirs sing.

On May 21 at 7 p.m. at the centre you can enjoy their singing along with hand bells, a great evening mark, it on your calendar.

On the 15th of May at 5:30 p.m. is potluck. Cost $5.00. Bring a friend, dish, or

“As we were developing the latest version of the online platform, we pinpointed areas that could be time consuming for applicants and came up with solutions that will speed up the application process,” says Syeda Khurram, FarmCash Chief Operating Officer. “At FarmCash, our mission is to provide farmers with a tool that helps increase profitability, but if we can make the process as simple and easy as possible, that’s even better.”

Following news that the federal government plans to increase advance limits, FarmCash is also working with Agricul-

The Innisfree Minburn 4 - H Beef Club held its May meeting on May 1, in Minburn. We discussed many things but mostly our upcoming Achievement Day at the end of May. Our Mock Achievement Day for our members will be on May 15, in Minburn. We will be having a

Grooming and Showmanship workshop put on by two of our senior members as well as a Judging workshop that evening. We also will be practicing leading our steers around the show ring. We will be having a cleanup for the Minburn Ag Grounds on May 19 to get ready for show day. We will also be helping to set up and clean up for the Courage

Canada Trail Ride which is on May 25.

We have done this in the past and we have always enjoyed helping out for this worthwhile cause. Our Achievement Day will be on May 29, 2019. The show will start at 2:30 and the sale will be at 6p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Our club is looking forward to Achievement Day. We have recently started a

Producers should consider a number of factors before deciding to terminate their hay land in the spring followed by seeding an annual crop.

Traditionally, forage stands have been terminated in the fall by using one of three approaches – tillage only, herbicide application combined with tillage and herbicide application followed by direct seeding into sod,” says Mark Cutts, crop specialist at the Alberta Ag-Info Centre. “The main advantage of fall termination is the ability to establish a good seedbed with tillage or – in the case of direct seeding – allowing the sod to decompose.”

While spring termination of hay land is an option, producers need to be aware of a number of factors that will affect its success.

The ability to manage these factors will influence the success of seeding annual crops into spring-terminated hay land.

“One factor that must be managed properly is soil moisture,” says Cutts. “In many areas of the province, conservation of spring moisture is essential for crop establishment.”
