The Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association hosted their 24th Annual Dance Festival at Lakeland College’s Alumni Theatre in Vermilion on April 12 - 14. The festival included hundreds of d an c es per for me d by many d an c ers from all across Alber ta. These i n c l u d e d t h e Ve r m i l i o n S a m ot sv i t dancer s as well as member s from well known clubs like the Shumka and Cheremosh clubs from Edmonton. A n ew i t e m t h i s ye a r wa s h a i rbraiding offered all weekend as well as another vendor market on April
13, which was much enjoyed during the festival. There were also food trucks on site. “ We were beyond thrilled to have ever yone here this weeken d! We woul d like to thank the community for their support, the participants and families who drove, adjudicator Garrett Nestorowich, the many volunteers, and most of all our sponsors. Without your assistance, it would not have been as easy as it was,” said Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association President, Morgan Wood. Art Show And Sale

There were many vibrant art pieces displayed at the Vermilion Regional Centre from April 12 – 13, as the Vermilion Community Art Club held their 9th Annual Art Show & Sale. A wine and cheese event on April 12, allowed hundreds of guests to enjoy viewing the large selection of varying art mediums including painting, sketching, photography, pottery, fabric, wood, antlers, leather, and welded metal. A range of originals, prints, cards, books, jewellery, and magnets were available for purchase. Live classical music by the RGB Trio, and snacks provided a relaxing atmosphere for guests to stay and mingle while perusing the artwork. Artists displayed paintings, and gave live demonstrations on April 13, and guests enjoyed watching the artists at

They said, ‘You paint every day!’ and they were right. I joined the Art Club three years ago, and have loved that everyone is so helpful with ideas,” said Wegiel. Several raffle items were drawn, and the club was thankful to volunteers for helping set up and take down at the event. “This year, there was a lot of new work. The contributors have been amazing, including 46 artists and 50 sponsors. We are very grateful that artists are always telling us that this is one of the best shows around because they always feel welcome,” said show chairperson, Featured artist, Eraine Wegiel, at the 2019 Art Show & Sale in Vermilion on April 12. We, the family of Steva MacPhee, would like to thank: All the doctors, nurses, nursing aides, cleaning and maintenance staff who attended to Mom’s care in the Vermilion Valley Lodge, Vermilion Hospital and Vermilion Nursing Home over the past 2 years. Your caring attitude and communication with the family kept us informed. Micheal and Val, Donald, Ronnie “Scrawny”, Anna Marie and Father Roger Rouleau for being with her when she passed. Father Roger Rouleau who made numerous visits to see Mom bringing the Eucharist and a good chat as well as being available to us when we needed to talk. Your assistance in planning the Prayer Vigil and the Funeral Mass showed that you knew Mom and which readings would be appropriate for her last Mass. Anna Marie MacPhee who gave up most of her own life for the past year to be Mom’s caregiver. AJ for making Mom soup every night to accompany her supper. The “Laurence boys” for providing the music for Mom’s funeral just as she asked. The CWL members who came from across the province to form the CWL Honor Guard. Barry Roth for playing the pipes after the Funeral Mass. Fantasy flowers for the beautiful casket spray; how creative you are. Sharon Jaremco and her staff who provided the donuts for the Prayer Vigil and for the Funeral luncheon, the soups, sandwiches and pastries Mom wanted. All were delicious. You can now add borscht soup to your menu – it was great. Cathie, Maggie and Janet who set up the displays at the Church and the Seniors Centre of key moments in Mom’s life, family, trips, and hobbies with pictures and items given to them by all our family members. We hope that anyone who received knitted touques, scarves and gloves from her will remember her fondly. The staff at the Crossroads Funeral Chapel who were of immense help to us in getting everything organized for the funeral. The town cards and the Mass cards were beautiful. You sure made us feel that Mom’s funeral was what was most important to you. Every detail was not too much to ask. And most importantly to thank all who came to celebrate Mom’s life and console us in our grief at her Prayer Vigil and Funeral Mass. Mom would have been very pleased to see you all and tell you what her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were doing and ask you about your family and ‘oh maybe we could play a game of crib’. Just as Mom missed Dad everyday, we will miss her for the rest of our lives. Mary, Cathie, Micheal, Maggie, Janet, Donald, Ronnie “Scrawny”, Christine, Brian, Anna Marie, Margaret and our families.

Coloring eggs, chocolate bunnies, pussy willows and homemade hot cross buns are all part of our Easter traditions. There is really no comparison between a homemade hot cross bun and a store bought one. The aroma and taste of freshly baked hot cross buns is always a special treat for the Easter season. Both of my grandmothers and my mom made hot cross buns which we enjoyed from Good Friday right until Easter, with a ham supper or later as a ham bun. My favorite part was the ever so slight taste of butter cream icing in the cross of the bun. Hot Cross Buns 1 package ( or 1 tablespoon) active dry yeast 1 cup warm water (110 -115 degrees) 1 teaspoon sugar 1 1/4 cups water hot water 2 tablespoons lard 1 tablespoon butter 1/2 cup sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon allspice (optional) 1 1/2 cups raisins 2 teaspoons sea salt

your kind words and concern. You said a “reply would be good to hear,� so I am taking this opportunity to do so. The main reason for the lack of writing was due to a very busy life, and secondly, I honestly didn’t think that many people read it. LOL. I will try my best to do it more often. Spring has sprung and the weather has been absolutely beautiful, but with that brings a high risk for fires as it is extremely dry out there. This past week
5 3/4 - 6 1/4 cups all purpose flour Mix the first three ingredients together in a small bowl. If you do not have a thermometer, the water should be the same temperature that you would give to a baby in a bottle. If the water is too warm the yeast will die, and the bread will not rise. If the water is not warm enough, the yeast will not grow. The teaspoon of sugar is food for the yeast. Allow the yeast to sit until it bubbles. Next, in a separate bowl pour the hot water over the lard, butter, sugar and salt and stir until all is dissolved. Allow this mixture to cool to the baby bottle temperature. Add both the yeast mixture and the sugar lard mixture together. Add in the raisins and the cinnamon. Stir in 4 or more cups of flour, adding the flour in 1 cup then 1/2 cup portions. When the dough is to stiff to stir in any more flour, then you will add the flour by kneading it in. With the remaining flour, flour a surface to knead the flour in. Knead the remaining flour in until the dough is workable and not sticky. Then knead the dough for 8 minutes. If you are out of practice your arms may get tired. It is o.k. to rest, but the dough still needs to be kneaded for the full 8 minutes. Place the dough in a buttered bowl. Place away from cool drafts, a warm area is best. Cover with a piece of wax paper and let rise for 1 hour. Remove the wax paper and punch the

bread dough down. Use the dough to form into 24 – 30 buns. Cover the formed buns with wax paper. Allow the buns to rise. This will take 1 – 2 hours depending on the temperature of the room. Cut a cross on the top of each bun with a sharp knife (optional). Bake the buns at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. Brush with melted butter or for a sweet glaze brush with a honey and melted butter blend when you take them out of the oven. When they are cool, mix up a batch of butter cream icing and ice the top of the buns in the cross. Easter Menu Ideas - Ham, with applesauce and mustard, potatoes, cooked carrots, a lettuce salad, and hot cross buns, for dessert angel food cake with whipped cream and strawberries or cherry cheese cake. Coloring Easter Eggs - If you are making simple colored eggs that will be eaten, begin by hard boiling the eggs. Place the eggs in a pot of cold water, bring to a full boil, cover the pot and remove it from the heat and let it stand for 15-17 minutes. Drain the water and cool the eggs quickly in cold water. Very fresh eggs do not peel well, so it is better to use eggs that are a little older for easier peeling. You can use several drops of food coloring, 2 cups hot water and 1 tablespoon vinegar. If you use a white crayon, where you draw, will remain white after the egg is dyed. You can do stripes, polka dots or any design you like. You can experiment with adding a bit of cooking oil to the dye pots for a marbleized effect. Instead of using food coloring, you can make natural dyes by boiling natural foods to color the eggs. 2 cups chopped or shredded beets for red, 1 tablespoon chili powder or 2 tablespoons paprika for orange, 1 1/2 cups cranberries or raspberried for pink, 2 cups red cabbage or blueberries for blue, onion skins or 1 tablespoon turmeric for yellow. General directions: boil with 2-3 cups water and 1 tablespoon vinegar, and then strain. The colored eggs can later be turned into potato salad, egg salad or devilled eggs. Another method to use in dying eggs is to use KoolAid. Kool-Aid comes in a rainbow of colors. Mix one package of Kool-Aid with 2/3 to 3/4 of a cup hot water. You may have to use smaller containers for this craft. There is no need to add the vinegar. This method produces brightly colored eggs that also smell great. I hope you have fun celebrating the greatest triumph of our faith and I wish you all a happy and blessed Easter.

Agriculture for Life Launches its fourth annual #FarmBabies Photo Contest. (CALGARY, AB, April 12, 2019) – In celebration of spring on the farm, Agriculture for Life (Ag for Life), is launching its annual #FarmBabies photo contest, an Alberta-wide contest with over $600 in prizes available to be won. “Our #FarmBabies19 contest is a fun way to welcome spring on the farm and celebrate the countless hours of work that farmers and farm families spend caring for their new arrivals,” says Luree Williamson, CEO Ag for Life. “Many people don’t understand the dedication and care that goes into raising livestock, so by shar-
ing these photos and stories we hope to help educate Albertan’s about life on the farm and the vital role agriculture plays in our lives.” The #FarmBabies19 contest is open to all Alberta residents. Entries must be photographs taken in Alber ta of farm animals born January 1 to May 31, 2019. One grand prize winner will receive a selection of goods valued at over $600. Contest supporters include The Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, Trouw Nutrition and Vetoquinol. Kat Danser Shreds Vermilion Folk Club

The Vermilion Folk Club hosted Kat Danser and the Tall Tales at the Vermilion Legion on April 13. Her edgy voice shredded blues notes right to the back of the room. Born and raised in southeast Saskatchewan, Danser lives in Edmonton, and enjoys playing all over Alberta. She has been to Vermilion a few times in the past. When working for the U of A Hospital as a palliative care worker, she was stationed in Vermilion as well as Lloydminster, St. Paul, Slave Lake and all
over northern Alberta. “I love working with rural Albertans; there’s a straight-forwardness about them,” said Danser. Right from the first beat, she and the band lit up the stage with her smile and the upbeat number that opened the show. The audience clapped along with excitement, and Danser thanked them for showing up in body and spirit and getting into it right from the start. Danser teaches at the U of A and Grant MacEwan. She spent some time living in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama and developing her education and love for southern music, she has

now received her doctorate. “I have been helped by other musicians to become who I am today. When you live in rural areas, there is a different music surrounding, and there are a few thousand hurdles to get here,” said Danser. She went on to encourage dancing, and dug deep belting out songs throughout the night. Members of the Folk Club went on to thank Kat Danser and the Tall Tales for their outstanding performance, as well as the Alberta Photo submitted Foundation for the Ar ts for making it possible.

Should You Feed Mouldy Hay To Your Livestock?
During wet summers, it ’s hard to avoid ending up with hay that contains mould. But mouldy hay can pose serious health risks and is generally less palatable to animals. Here’s what you should know about feeding mouldy hay to farm animals. The Amount Of Mould Some of your hay is bound to be mould y, but if the mould is over ly noticeable, chances are the hay won’t be appealing to your livestock. This may cause the animals to eat less or refuse to eat at all, which will negatively impact their health and lead to lower-quality meat and dairy. Cattle are more resistant to eating hay with mould, but certain types of mould can cause infertility and breeding complications in cows as well as organ damage. Pregnant animals should never be fed mouldy hay. The Risks Posed To Farmers Mouldy hay isn’t just bad for animal health. The mould spores found in hay can also lead to farmer’s lung, a disease that causes breathing problems, allergy attacks, persistent coldlike symptoms and, if left untreated, permanent lung damage. If some of your hay looks or smells like it contains mould, it’s best to get rid of it and acquire fresh hay. When in doubt, you can always have your animal feed tested for mould. Taking precautions when it comes to mouldy hay is best for your health, your animals’ health and in the long run, your farm’s bottom line.

What Are Your Fertilizer Requirements For Spring?

With seeding set to begin over the next month, soil fertility and fertilizer management are on the minds of many producers in Alberta. Doon Pauly, agronomy research scientist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestr y, looks at s pr ing fer tilizer considerations. Soil tests are still the best way to determine levels at the beginning of the season. “We can determine where we’re starting from as far as the nitrate that is present in the soil and what’s there for the plant at the start of the year.” “Phosphorus, potassium, and salinity don’t change much year to year. However, the tests show you trends over time that gives clues about your fertilizer management,” he adds. “If your phosphorus is gradually improving, that is a sign you’re doing a pretty good job of matching at least what you are taking off the land.” Nitrogen “We hear lots of concern over nitrogen loss, so you need to consider your risk,” explains Pauly. “Your loss potential over winter is fairly low if you are in an area where you don’t typically have saturated conditions in the spring. If your normal practice in the spring is banding ahead of time, your loss potential is relatively low. We seldom have the conditions in a lot of the province where we have saturated soils after a spring fertilization event. We are not
at a high risk for nitrogen losses every year.” He adds that there is not a lot of loss difference between a two-pass and a one-pass system. “However, the onepass system should be comparable as long as the soil is sealing behind your application equipment, and it is giving you the seed soil separation that it is designed to.” “If you don’t want to handle a huge amount of dry fertilizer during the seeding operation, you can design a system where you are surface applying a little bit of nitrogen or a portion of that nitrogen early in the growing season and have it work very well. Short season crops are grown here. St. Jerome’s Annual Gymnastics’ Day will take place this Thursday, April 18 beginning at 1 p.m. in the school gym. Come and cheer on the grade four to 12 students as they perform their Swedish Drill, Pyramids and Gymnastic skills to earn points for their house. Who will be the winner this year, Cartier, Fraser or Mackenzie? Students are encouraged to wear green, blue or yellow on Wednesday, April 17, for “House Colour Day” to show support for their house. April Happigrams were celebrated on Friday, April 12. The Easter themed celebration began with the grade one students performing the play, “There Was An Old Lady who Swallowed a Chick”, and then singing the song, “Lord I Lift Your Name on High”. The students did an amazing job entertaining the large group gathered with their expressive, clear and energetic voices and actions. Congratulations to all the April winners for their hard work, and personal achievements. Well done Grade 4 and Mrs. Despins for the amazing job you did organizing and running the Bake Sale for “Operation Smile”! The class was able to raise close to $1000, which is enough for four children to receive operations. The class would like to thank everyone who sent in the amazing and delicious baking and all those who brought money to purchase the tasty treats. Thanks to everyone for sharing your talents and treasures to help others!

The Kindergarten students are beginning a unit about Animals and Their Young. In conjunction with this theme, the students went on a field trip to the College farm. Ms. Joanne took us through the barns to see the sheep, the horses, the cows, the calves, and a few cats. We pet all the animals and learned about them. We also saw a sheep being sheared, we held the lambs, we watched the horses in the riding arena, and we went in the new dairy barn to see how everything there works. The students had a great learning experience. Once again, our students did not come back empty-handed from the annual Klondike Relays Track and Field competition in Edmonton. On April 8, 38 athletes from VES travelled to Edmonton to compete against 20 other schools. There is always a tremendous amount of competition, as many of these schools participate in track year-round. Our students represented VES proudly, coming away with ribbons in Grade 4 girls ball throw and long jump, Grade 5/6 boys ball throw and long jump, as well as Grade 5/6 girls ball throw. A huge thank you to Mr. Harvey for organizing this event, Mrs. Molsberry for taking over as a running coach, and Mr. Anhorn

Grade 4-6 students in VES participate in the competition within our school. During the last couple of weeks, each Grade 4-6 student delivered a speech to their classmates, with their teachers choosing the best speech. Then the top three students (one from each grade) went on to a speak off, judged by Mr. Anhorn, Tannis Henderson, and Justin Thompson. Congratulations to Kaedence Eriksen. She will represent VES in the April 18 Superintendent’s Speech Contest at JR Robson. Thank you to everyone who partook in our VES raffle fundraiser. 673 raffle tickets were sold with 50% of the funds going to support our class field trips. The winners of the raffle were: Shannon Leonard ($1682.50), Bernie Whitten ($1009.50) and Toland Cochrane ($673.00). Vermilion Elementary School agreed to participate in the TIMSS 2019 (Trends in International Math and Science Study), an educational assessment project sponsored by the International Association for the Evaluation of Education Achievement (EEA). TIMSS measures trends in student achievement in mathematics and science. It then studies differences
in education systems in almost 50 countries to help improve teaching and learning worldwide. As a school, we are proud to have been chosen for this study. The Scholastic Book Fair was a success once again. The proceeds will be spent on new books for our Library Learning Commons. Students always enjoy new reads that are popular, current, and fresh. Scholastic provided a promotion for our families to come out and take in our book fair. The promotion was a draw for a student to win $25 in books for themselves, and $25 in books for their classroom. Congratulations to the winner,

2019 President’s Gala Supports Transformative Bursary

(Lloydminster, Alta.) When Jennifer Heculuck decided to return to school, it had been 30 years since she last sat in a classroom. At the age of 50, the mother of two made a life-changing decision to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher and enrolled in Lakeland College’s university transfer program. Faced with the financial challenges many students encounter, Heculuck applied for a bursary from Lakeland’s Support Our Students (SOS) Enhanced Bursary Fund. The fund is supported by proceeds from the President’s Gala and assists students based on financial need. In 2018-19, Heculuck was one of 25 Lakeland students to receive a $4,000 bursary drawn from the fund and on April 4, she had the opportunity to share her Lakeland story and thank attendees of the 2019
President’s Gala for their support. “Without donors like you, this couldn’t have been possible for me. What humbles me the most is that there are so many people in this room I have never met and you took a chance on people – on strangers – who you’ve never met and you helped them. That, to me, is the most amazing thing,” says Heculuck to the 180-plus attendees of the gala. “You took a chance on me with your kindness and generosity, trust and respect. All I can hope is that I can pay it forward and give you the kindness and respect that you deserve by being a good student. It’s never too late to go back to school and realize your dreams. I am so thankful for your support.” Gala attendees heard from other SOS Enhanced Bursary Fund recipients in a special video presentation, including Amy Rosendahl, a hairstyling student, who was present to help with the Spa Raffle Pack-
age. Janet Paul was the lucky raffle winner who will enjoy a four-hour spa session for 10 thanks to Lakeland’s esthetician and hairstyling students. The seventh annual gala also featured a Luxury Raffle Package, fine dining, an acoustic performance by Charlie Major – presented by Stingray – and more at the Lloydminster campus. Emceeing the event were Quinn Hlus, a bachelor of applied science: environmental management student, and Tucker Cochrane, a bachelor of commerce student. Final numbers are still being tallied, but it is anticipated the 2019 President’s Gala
will be another successful fundraiser for the SOS Enhanced Bursary Fund. “We have many friends of the college to thank, especially our generous sponsors and guests, for making this year’s gala another success for our students. Building the SOS Enhanced Bursary Fund means more students can achieve their educational goals. The Vermilion & District Chamber of Commerce held an All Candidates Forum at St. Jerome’s School on April 9. Five of the six candidates for the Vermilion-Lloydminster-Wainwright Constituency were able to attend, and each shared information about their parties and outlook for the future. According to www.elections.ab.ca, candidates for the Vermilion-Lloydminster-Wainwright Constituency include Ryan Clar ke -Alber t a NDP, Ro ber t McFadzean-Independent, Jim McKinnon - Freed om Conser vative Par t y, Craig G. Peterson-Alberta Party, Garth Rowswell-United Conservative Party, and Kelly Zeleny-Alberta Advantage Party. Candidates were each given four minutes to discuss their platforms, and later answered a series of questions. Over 200 people attended and were eager to listen to what the panel had to say. “We need politicians who will stand up for industry and take a look at rural Alberta,” said Alberta Party Candidate,
Craig Peterson, from Vermilion who was a former teacher at J.R. Robson School. Freedom Conservative Party Candidate, Jim McKinnon, from Wainwright said that he is a proud Canadian and Albertan; that he is not a separatist, but that he is tired of equalization payments and Alber ta getting a second class ticket. “ W h e n t h e e c o n o my i s h ea l t hy, all members of society benefit,” said United Conservative Party Candidate Garth Rowswell. Alberta NDP Candidate, Ryan Clarke, currently teaches Social Studies in Elk Point and feels that the government should help average, ordinary people live more affordably. Alberta Advantage Party Candidate, Kelly Zeleny, is a registered nurse in Vegreville, and noted that they will work towards phasing out the carbon tax and addressing rural crime. ATCO has been installing LED streetlights in Vermilion this spring. According to CAO, George Rogers, the town made a decision to proceed with the conversion last year. He said that Council believes that this move will provide a better quality of lighting in the community, and also do our part to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions. In addition, light pollution would also be reduced as these LED’s are Dark Sky Compliant. Light pollution is the excessive light that is created by people. It poses a threat to the eyes, disturbs the ecosystem, apart from interfering with astronomical observations. Photo Sue Chikie
