A tropical set filled the Kitscoty Hall stage for performances of ‘Lost City Of The Nunus’ on April 5, and 6, that will run again on April 12, and 13.

Approximately 200 people attended the adventure, comedy set on April 6.

The audience enjoyed a lavish meal and periodic interactions with the cast.

“I love being a part of the play because I love having the opportunity to see people that I wouldn’t normally if we didn’t do dinner theatre together,” said actress Erin O’Neill.

Veteran actress, Betty Evans, said that acting is very therapeutic and that it helped to bring her out of her shell.

Producers Brian and Jeane Hunter said, “Thanks to the community and surrounding area for your continued support over the last 16 years.”

Proceeds from the event will be going to support the Kitscoty Hall operations and rentals for local non-profit groups, and president of the Hall board, Rick Evans said, “Kitscoty is becoming an active theatre community between this event and the elementar y and high school groups. We would like to thank the many volunteers needed to make this work, and the community and area for their support. I like being a part of a small community because with all kinds of community events, when you see people step up and support, it becomes really noticeable.”

Several raffle prizes were also up for grabs with some being chosen each night, and some drawn after the final performance.

IN MEMORY OF A SPECIAL Approximately 500 people attended to witnes s the thr illing matc h - u ps between bull and rider. On April 5, an ABBI bucking bull competition was held along with junior steer riding, junior bull riding, and wild pony races.

April 6, began with wild pony races, and a Battle of the Breeders Bull Sale was held during intermission.

Proceeds supported the Marwayne Arena, and the PBR had the crowd cheering wildly for exceptional riders.

Bull fighters included Monty Phillips, Josh Haeberle, and Levi Hale.

Zane Lamber t was the winner of the 2019 Marwayne PBR, and ‘Homegrown’ was the Bull of the Night from Eno Bucking Bulls. Author of the new book, ‘No More Excuses,’ Stephen Price, grew up in Vermilion and attended high school in Lloydminster.

Throughout his life, Price overcame obstacles in physical health, psychological health, and business in order to ac h i eve t h e li fe h e h ad a lways dreamed of; operating a travel business and running around the world.

Born with a club foot he under went four surgeries and was told that he would never be able to run.

His new book details both his years of work and per sonal health c hal lenges, and the overcoming of them.

Price was able to take himself from being wheelchair bound to being able to push his limits running further and further, as well as faster and faster.

The book allows readers to learn more about inspirational people, and of fers loads of encouragement for their own lives.

VERMILION VETERINARY CLINIC: DR. GREGOR HEIN Vermilion Veterinary Clinic is thrilled to have staff veterinarian, Dr. Gregor Hein, working with them since August 1, 2018.

Dr. Hein is originally from Germany, and graduated in 2016. He worked at a mixed practice for six months, and then at a small animal practice for one and a half years. He has enjoyed being back at a mixed animal clinic here in Vermilion, and has been mostly working with large animals during the calving season from February – April.

“The cold February made it very busy. I like the variety, there are always new challenges, and the job is never the same so it is a lot of fun!” said Hein.

His wife, Lindsay Willis, is from the Cochrane area and also works at the Vermilion Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Hein is working under the supervision of Dr. Tim Goodbrand to obtain his last licensing exam, and then along with his wife, plans to stay in the area.

“All of the people we have met have been nice and friendly. We also enjoy the Vermilion Provincial Park, and have spent time cross country skiing over the winter. Even though it is a small town, there are many things to keep us busy,” said Hein.

Dr. Hein feels that Dr. Goodbrand is an awesome teacher; saying that while he is showing him how a procedure done, he is well mannered and that his experience is helpful.

“The clinic has an awesome team and inclusive social network. What I like about this job is that it’s very social meeting both people and animals, that there are opportunities to be outside with large animals and not behind a desk, and I enjoy the challenges; there is always something new to treat,” said Hein.

Sarah Martin’s 100th Birthday

Family and friends will gather on April 13, from 2 - 4 p.m. at the Clandonald Hall for a come and go tea to help celebrate Sarah Martin’s 100th Birthday.

The area resident’s actual Birthday is on April 12, and she is eager to see what her family has in store saying, “I can’t believe it myself to be honest!”

Born in Ireland, Sarah was the third of 16 c hil dre n b or n to J am e s an d Sarah Martin, and moved to Canada just after her 7th Birthday in May of 1926.

The front por tion of her home is their original stave-lock home built one year before they arrived. After all these years, she still remembers walking in the front door for the very first time, and going out with her dad the

next day to seed 10 acres of wheat.

Since then, her house has received two additions, the first built by a neighbour (McLean) and the second built by John McIntyre.

She attended Morton School walki n g o n e m i l e e a c h way, a n d l ate r attended the Sisters of St. Joseph’s School in Clandonald. She also spent a couple of years working in Edson before returning to care for her parents and other siblings. Sarah utilized her driver’s licence until choosing not to renew at 96 years old. At 98 years old, she continued riding the combine with her nephews, and still today advises them of the weather by checking her barometer.

In 20 07, for her fir st t im e bac k , Sarah travelled with her sister Ellen to Ireland. There she met her cousin’s son, Father Declan Shannon and

stayed with Pat and Mary Woods who own the house they were raised in.

She and her sister had the opportunity to sleep in the room they were born in.

She now has over 300 relatives who are direct descendants of James and Sarah Martin. “ What has kept me going are the hugs and kisses from family and friends,” said Sarah.

Sarah also still uses her treadle sewing machine that came from Ireland. Her nephew, Murray Martin, purchased a leather belt a few years back to keep it functioning. According to Murray, Sarah has an outstanding memory, and continues to enjoy playing rummy and crib. He says that her

agility is impressive, and she continu e s to re g ul ar ly m ake h o m e m ad e buns and raspberry jam.

“You can’t say enough good things about my nieces, nephews, and friends who continue helping me in all kinds of ways,” said Sarah.

Sarah’s health is remarkable, only taking vitamins, and eating a balanced diet.

W h e n a s ke d w h at h er s e c r et i s Sarah said, “Just keep moving and doing things. I live one day at a time.

I think my faith is what has kept me going.”

Overall, Sarah was very much looking forward to celebrating with family and friends.

“Hockey Night In Clandonald” A Huge Success!

The Clandonald Arena (a.k.a. “The Chrome Dome”) was a busy and noisy building on February 15 and 16. The Agricultural Society hosted a 24-hour hockey event, beginning at noon on Friday and ending just after noon on Saturday. A total of 19 teams participated, including 6 teams made up of Clandonald School students and teachers. Each team consisted of four players plus a goalie, and each non-contact game was an hour in length. Students paid a registration fee of $2 each, while other participants paid $125 per team. Players of both genders ranged in age from 6 to 65 years and came from Clandonald, Elk Point, Dewberry, Marwayne, Edmonton, Vermilion and Camrose. Thank you is extended to the Vermilion Lacrosse Association for the use of jerseys for the weekend. All the games were officiated, although current NHL rulings were not always carried out.

This resulted in much laughter from both players and on-lookers.

O u r a r e n a c a r e t a k e r, K e e g a n Fialkowski, and Jim Mead did a fantastic job of preparing and maintaining the ice for the games and many favourable comments were received on the condition of the natural ice surface. The Agricultural Society recently purchased a second-hand score clock from the Town of Vermilion and our chief statistician, Jim Mead, reported that there were a total of 158 goals scored by the home teams, while the guest teams netted 153 goals—all those in the 16 games that were played!

A concession was available at the arena and food was served at the Clandonald Community Hall during the games.

We acknowledge Sharon Jaremco for her donation of delicious pies and DJ Brett Maron for giving his time to provide music on Friday evening. A cash bar, manned by volunteers, was open at

the Hall on Friday night. Once again, local donors showed their generosity by providing awesome items for our raffle.

Prizes included tickets to a Lloydminster Bobcats game, a hoodie, a jacket, kids’ goalie pads, several hockey sticks and other items too numerous to mention.

The big winner of this event was Haying in the 30’s Cancer Support Society, which received a cheque in the amount of $6,000 – the total proceeds from our fundraiser. This money will benefit many people from our area who are undergoing cancer treatments and are in need of financial assistance. The cheque was presented to Martin Naundorf by Ron Harasiuk on March 25.

This endeavour was spearheaded

by Clandonald Ag. Society president, Ron Harasiuk, who spent countless hours to make it the great success that it was. Thanks, Ron, for your initiative and for organizing the event to run so smoothly! We thank all the players who participated, as well as all the boisterous fans who cheered them on. While games were in progress, several people stopped by the Arena to make monetary contributions to the cause. Their kindness and generosity are greatly appreciated. Special thanks also go to the many volunteers who so willingly gave of their time and talents. We are a small Ag. Society—but we have proved that it is possible to accomplish lots with little in “the little hamlet with lots of heart!”

When spring comes we get to finally enjoy the growth of fresh grass and the leaves coming into bud and then springing forth. Psychologically we crave and need this “greenness” as much as we need the warmth of the sunlight to deliver its precious Vitamin D. It was a long winter, and it was a cold winter, and I am so ready for some sunshine, not only for the vitamin D, but to heat the ground, lengthen the days, and bring in the greening of the prairies. One of the greatest benefits of plants is the fresh oxygen they create and the toxins that they absorb. This is true even of house plants. Scientists

have discovered that there are certain plants that are super good at cleaning up our indoor air. Our indoor air can become stagnate and filled with toxins from the gassing off of chemicals from the interior finishes in our homes and the consumer products that we buy.

There are several plants that actually will clean up the air pollution toxins in our homes; all while delivering fresh clean oxygen.

One of the top plants for cleaning the air is the snake plant also called mothers in law tongue. It is a ver y ea sy ke e p er, an d te n d s to b e t h e last plant left alive when neglected.

It absorbs carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, xylene, nitrogen monoxide, benzene, chloroform and various other air toxins. At night a snake plant will absorb carbon monoxide and release

Dear Editor I live in Mar wayne, AB. This has been posted on the “ Mar wayne & Area Rural Crime Watch” Facebook page.

I trust everyone had fun at the PBR (Pro Bull Riding) event last night. There seemed to be a really good turnout.

There was a lot of traffic (people and vehicles) in front of our house. So let’s just say I wasn’t surprised this morning to see a candidate sign removed from our property. To the person(s) who did this, your behaviour is really quite “petty”. I repeat this is a province with “free speech”. I much would have preferred if the individual(s) had knocked on our door to have a mature discussion about the issues. Instead they chose to remove the sign in the dark of night. Not cool! If everyone

agreed on every issue in life individuals, villages, provinces and countries would not grow. I am open to discussing issues, this is how we develop and expand our knowledge. But removing a candidate’s sign does nothing. After this latest incident (yes there were several earlier ones!), I am obligated to send this to the editors of the local newspapers.

Another excellent house plant for cleaning the air is the money plant.

It prefers to clean the volatile organic c o m p o u n d s fr o m t h e a ir, s u c h a s those that gas off from wall paint, laminate flooring, vinyl plank flooring and carpets. The leaves are toxic for children, dogs and cats, so take that into consideration before adding it to your home. A golden pothos is a vine plant that is good placed near the exit door to the garage, as it can clean the air of the toxins that may come in from the exhaust. Another plant to consider is the spider plant, which looks great in a hanging pot.

The peace lily consists of green foliage with slender white lily type flowers. It removes indoor air pollutants

from electronics, future and cleaning supplies. It only needs to be watered every 4 or 5 days. The next plant is one of my favourites, although it does take up more room than most plants. It is the palm tree, specifically the palms known as Areca, Butterfly or Bamboo palm. In addition to working as an air purifier, eliminating toxins in the air and releasing oxygen, it also is a natural humidifier. It releases approximately one liter of water a day into the air, making it perfect for our dry air, or for those with difficulty breathing.

For optimal indoor air quality, there are a couple of different recommendations. One is to have six plants per person, and the other is to have one plant per 100 square feet of space.

Plants are also a great way to clean the air in your work environment.

Before there was ever a Vermilion, there were many homesteaders living in the area and when the railway came through, those settlers wanted to create a community. In 1902, when land sur veyors came through looking for the best route for the CNR, they began to set up stations along the track. This was how the very small community of Borradaile appeared on the prairie. Named after Borradaile in Scotland, which itself was named for Bonnie Prince Charlie, some say but others said it was named for Borrowdale, England, which means ‘valley with a fort’ in old Norse. Some also say it was named for Lord Borradaile of England.

the first postmaster, followed by Harry Armstrong, Joe Walsh, Laura Walsh and Lute Ketchum.

By 1906, Borradaile had a newspaper called The Signal, which was owned and edited by William Cameron.

Cameron was one of the individuals who were present at the Battle of Frog Lake, for which he wrote a book about.

S ever al fam ili e s woul d m ove to the Borradaile area over the next two decades. Unfor tunately, with other communities growing up faster and with more ser vices, the days were numbered for Borradaile, which would see its post office close in the mid1940s.

Prior to this, in 1939, an oil well was dug that would produce oil for the area for many years. A second well was soon dug and in 1940, Western Drillers drilled a well just north of the first one.

In 1941, the government made a grant of $500,000 to the Canadian National Railway to dig 50 wells in the same area in order to obtain oil for locomotives. In

all, 42 wells were dug, and a scrubbing plant was built. This plant took the sand and water out of the oil to make it useable for the locomotives. The wells also contributed to the war effort.

W i t h t h e e n d of t h e S e c o n d World War, heavy crude was not in demand anymore and the wells were becoming too expensive to operate. The cost of shipping oil to Lloydminster was no longer making the enterprise profitable and the scrubbing plant was torn down.

The wells were abandoned, and the oil field died in the early 1950s.

Doors And Windows For Style And Comfort Submitted Changing doors and windows is one of a home owner’s biggest maintenance investments, apart from replacing a roof.

Style, comfort, and price are the three determining factors when it comes to choosing new doors and windows.

STYLE Firstly, let the overall style of your home guide you. If the house has a rustic look, you may want to opt for windows with small panes. If your house has stone siding and natural materials prevail, you’ll probably prefer wood. And lastly, if you have a modern home, you’ll probably want to focus on metallic or coloured finishes.

The air between the layers of glass is a good insulator, but sometimes gas (krypton or argon) is inserted between the panes to provide better insulation.

window. This coating comes in the form of a low-emissivity film, which lets the sun’s rays in but prevents heat from escaping.

You should also check the spacers that separate the two or three panes of glass.

The spacers surround the windows and make them waterproof. It is important to ensure that they have low conductivity, or, in other words, that they are non-metallic.

These inserts help to reduce condensation at the bottom of the windows and prevent the glass from becoming excessively cold.

Become A Volunteer By Asking These 5 Questions National Volunteer Week takes place this year from April 7 to 13 and the designated theme is The Volunteer Factor — Lifting Communities.

Without a doubt, Canada’s roughly 12.7 million volunteers are helping communities throughout the country and National Volunteer Week is the perfect time to acknowledge their contributions. It’s also an ideal moment to begin lending a helping hand yourself.

If you’re keen to lift up your own community by volunteering, here’s how to get started by asking yourself the five W’s: who, what, where, when and why.

1. Who? Ask yourself who you’d like to help.

It could be homeless people, refugees, children, animals, senior citizens or those who have a disability.

Alternatively, you can ask yourself who you are and how your unique skillset could be of service to your community. If you’re an accountant, you could volunteer to help a local charity balance their books. If you’re

a chef, you might contribute your skills at a soup kitchen.

2. What?

Figure out what volunteer opportunities are available. Ask friends, family members, neighbours and colleagues if they’re aware of volunteer opportunities that would be suited to your talents. Or, you could look online to find out what volunteer opportunities are available.

A great online resource is Volunteer Canada (volunteer.ca). They have links to volunteer centres all across the country that can connect you with local volunteering opportunities corresponding to your preferences.

VES Book Fair Vermilion Elementary School hosted a Scholastic Book Fair from April 2 - 8 to raise funds for more library books. Through the Accelerated Reading program this year, Grade 2 - 6 students were able to take part in a promotion earning Book Fair Bucks. Librarian, Mrs. MacMillan said, “The children always like the selection of books, posters, and school tools. This year there was a lot of products for hands-on learning and journals to encourage students to write stories.”

The Canadian Ranch Roping Association hosted a Cowboy and Cow Horse Competition at Lakeland College in Vermilion on April 5 - 7.

Competitors worked together heading and heeling designated animals as calmly and efficiently as possible like they would out in the pasture. A Ranch

Rodeo was held on April 5, and Dean of Agricultural Sciences, Josie Van Lent said, “It’s great to see a super turnout with a lot of alumni and community members participating.”

Sor ting and doctoring continued throughout the weekend. Lakeland College has been hosting similar events for the past 17 years, and brought back this event per student request.

The Agriculture Services Technician will report to the Director of Ag and Environment, be an appointed Pest Control Inspector, Weed Inspector, and provide leadership for seasonal vegetation, weed and pest control and support for agricultural extension services, sustainable agriculture initiatives and support programs.  Assist the municipal Vegetation Management Program to ensure weed and brush control work and enforcement is done according to Provincial Acts, Municipal policy and Service Levels. Key qualifications include a post-secondary education in agriculture or environment science and previous experience with municipal agriculture programs, along with an agricultural background. Monday April 29 is our last Parent Advisory Council meeting for the year at 7 p.m. There was good discussion at the March meeting about technology and the future of it in education.

School counsellors are busy registering high school students for the 201920 school year. It is very important that students make course selections very carefully as this significantly influences how the timetable will be built. The biggest priority in building a timetable is trying to ensure that each student gets all the require core courses they request.

While some students will end up with unbalanced schedules, understand that

this is not a driving force in building or changing the timetable. Often minor adjustments can be made, but with trying to offer the amount of in-class courses we do with a very limited number of teaching staff, there are many challenges when building the timetable. Thus priorities are established prior to its construction and adhered to.

Students will participate in the Student Vote election at JR Robson School the day before the Alberta provincial election (April 15). Parents are encouraged to discuss the election at home so that students are engaged with politics and can make an informed vote! Gymnastics Day sees the three houses, Cartier, Fraser and Mackenzie, battle for bragging rights, as they entertain family, friends and alumni with their military-like Swedish Drill routines, spectacular Pyramids and amazing individual routines and skills.

Students had to draw their creations and describe how sound was made using them. The grade three class might even take their band on the road.

We have a very busy two weeks ahead of us at St. Jerome’s. On Thursday, April 11 grade three to nine students will be taking part in “The Stations of the Cross� at Holy Name Parish.

On Friday, April 12 the elementary students will have a busy day with the April Happigrams Celebration taking place at 9:30 am. In the afternoon at 12:45 pm students will be taking part in the “Jump Rope for Heart� event. Elementary grades will take turns skipping for an hour.

On April 3 we had our assembly and it was also Wear Bling Day. Cale read our land acknowledgement, and then Ms. King directed the singing of the VES song. Mrs. Joa informed us that all of our northern birthday boxes made it to their destinations.

Mr. Moses pointed out that this month’s virtue is Self Control, and Taylor M. won the virtue draw. Mrs. Moses also gave us the heads up that on April 18, we will have a nutritious breakfast for the students and staff, with turkey sausage, scrambled eggs, whole wheat pancakes with blueberries, fruit, and milk. All Grade 2 students got up and read an Arctic animal fact to us and the Grade 1 students read their spring sentences paired with their spring drawings shown on the big screen.

Fat Cat was here. Mrs. Tomkins informed us that our March AR total was 2297 points, to make the total to date 15 672 points. Congratulations to readers of the month - Kalen Garnett and Jada Sanford, and honorable mention to 2B and 4A for their amazing point totals for March.

Parent teacher interviews were held on April 4. Thank you to all parents who came out to meet with the teachers.

The Spring Concert will be held on April 12 from 12 -1 p.m. in the school gym.

The concert will go in order from youngest to oldest students, so Kindergarten

will start and Grade 6 will be last, with a final song at the end of the concert that involves students from K-6. Please come out and enjoy the music.

Grade 3 classes are learning about global citizenship. They will be holding a hat day after Easter for the whole school to raise funds for an organization called KIVA. For $1.00, students can wear a hat and all proceeds will go towards helping those in need within this organization.

This year, we had Mr. Anhorn and Mrs. Seymour coaching the junior girls’ basketball team at JR Robson. Ms. To, the art teacher from JR Robson, is also currently helping Mrs. Tomkins and Mrs. Doherty with art club at VES. In order to keep building the bridge between VES and JR Robson, we have an awesome opportunity for our Grade 6 students starting in September 2019. Any VES Grade 6 student who wishes to play volleyball or basketball will have the opportunity to join the JR Robson Marauders teams next year. If they decide they want to stay at VES that would be available for them as well. We have talked to our current Grade 5 students, and they are very excited about this opportunity. We also recognize this as just one way that our students will visit the school, ensuring an even smoother transition into junior high. If you have any questions, please contact the school.

Myrnam 4-H Club March Report & Two Hills 4-H District Communications Results

March was a very busy month for 4 - H c lu bs ac ros s t he reg i o n. T he Myrnam 4-H Club had its communications night on March 1st at the Myrnam Seniors Centre. There was a variety of very unique and creative speeches and presentations. All the 4-H members did very well! Junior speeches first place was Brodie Pashulka’s speech “I’m A Happy Camper,” second place Olivia Saruk with “Harvest Getaway.” Junior presentations first place was Lili Wagner with “My Trip To Vancouver,” second place Luke Wagner “My Vacation In Mexico.” Intermediate speeches, first place Hannah Saruk with “Vallarta,” second place RaeBecca Pashulka “Let’s Make S’more Memories.” Intermediate presentations first place Madison Bykewiech “Planning Ahead For A Successful Calving Season,” second place Harlen Saskiw “No time to spare.” Senior speech Seth Trynchuk with “Twins.” Thank you to all the parents for helping organize everything. We have an exciting couple of months coming up, in April we will have our annual farm tour and we are also getting all of our members certi-

fied in first aid thanks to a grant from the University of Calgary 4-H Alumni/Mountain View Events Grant.

Our upcoming events are: April 30 at 6 p.m. in the Myrnam Arena is a chili supper with admission by donation, there will also be a pie auction and a silent auction. Don’t miss out on our baking project’s delicious pies! Everyone is welcome to attend!

Spring Fling for intermediate members was held in Smoky Lake April

5 - 6 for the Northeast region. Some of our members attended as participants and as counsellors. We all had a lot of fun.

Everyone is working hard now that the weather has warmed up to get their

steers ready for Achievement Day at the end of May. We would like to thank Cornerstone Co-op for the generous donation to our club. Our next meeting will be in Minburn on May 1, 2019 at 7 p.m.

4 Tips For Staying Safe Around Cattle

Although cattle aren’t naturally aggressive, they can easily injure their human attendants, sometimes even fatally, due to their large size and skittish nature. Here are four tips for staying safe when working with cattle.

Know their flight zones. An animal’s flight zone refers to how close you can get to it before it will flee. For dairy cows with frequent human contact, the flight zone may be five metres or less. A herd of grazing beef cattle, on the other hand, may start to flee once you get within 100 metres of them.

Keep strange noises to a minimum.

Cattle have a much sharper sense of hearing than most humans. A noise that may not seem that loud to you could seriously startle your cows. Frightened cattle are likely to run and accidentally take down anyone in their way. Try not to expose them to noises that might scare them, especially when there are people in the barn or pen with them.

Watch out for their blind spots. When working with cattle, don’t stand behind them as they can’t turn their heads and won’t be able to see you. Always approach them from the side rather than from behind to avoid getting kicked. Also keep in mind that cattle have poor depth perception and may easily be startled by what they see as well as what they hear.

Take precautions when working with cattle. When in proximity to cows, avoid making sudden movements or prodding them when they have nowhere to go.

Fear Of Bloat Costs More Money Than Actual Cases Of Bloat Do

Respect it, but don’t fear it. That’s the message from cattle producers and beef specialists alike who through year s of experience and researc h appreciate the value of grazing cattle on pure or percentage stands of alfalfa.

Properly managed alfalfa makes good pasture with several added benefits, including: Improved weight gains on all classes of cattle (gains of 1.5 to 2 or more pounds per day can be expected); adding fertility to the soil with a nitrog en -fixing c ro p; c reat ing a he d g e against poor forage production during dryer growing seasons; and increasing plant biodiversity to benefit soil health.

Yes, there are circumstances when turning cattle into a lush stand of alfalfa at the wrong time and perhaps with the wrong class of cattle can result in bloat.

But paying attention to a few production and management principles can greatly reduce the risk of bloat and provide producers the opportunity to capture the benefits.

While pure stands of alfalfa pasture can be very productive, they may be more appropriate for end use as high quality hay or silage for dairy cattle.

From a beef cattle grazing perspective, most interest these days is in 30 to 60 per cent alfalfa grown in a blend with grass forages and/or in combination with other legume species.

“We’ve looked at alfalfa in several d if ferent gra zing stu d ies over the years, most often used in a binary mix (alfalfa/grass forage blends),” says Bart Lardner, formerly research scientist at the Western Beef Development Centre, now a professor in the Department of Animal and Poultr y Science at the University of Saskatchewan. “And the alfalfa component produces several benefits. The industry has lost a lot of money over the years by avoiding alfalfa, partly due to unwarranted fear.”

Timing is one of the keys to reducing the risk of bloat, says Lardner. In high percentage alfalfa stands avoid grazing alfalfa before and up to the bud stage, when plants can be lush and tender. And avoid introducing cattle to an alfalfa pasture when the dew is heavy or while it is raining. As plants mature and develop more fibre, the risk of bloat greatly decreases as the stand reaches 30 to 40 per cent flower stage.

And including alfalfa in a pasture forage mix that includes more fibrous grasses also provides cattle with a wider feed selection than just straight alfalfa. “It may take some experience for people to find their comfort level for grazing alfalfa, but it is an excellent forage,” he says. “Yearlings will gain nicely on alfalfa with no comparison to a grazing straight grass.” (See accompanying list below for more tips on alfalfa grazing management).

Lardner says a legume/grass pasture blend that includes about 30 to 40 per cent alfalfa makes excellent pasture for grazing cow-calf pairs. “It provides good quality forage for the nursing and gestating beef cow, and can help increase weaning weights on calves,” he says. “And the legume is also helping to fix nitrogen in the soil.”

And for backgrounding cat tle or grassers, studies show a pasture with a 50/50 blend of alfalfa and grass species can generally produce 1.5 to 2 pounds per day or more weight gains.

Lardner says studies over the years have involved several alfalfa varieties with some differences in production, but all performed well. AC Grazeland BR, for example, is a bloat-reduced variety that showed reduced yield compared to

conventional alfalfa varieties in some projects, but still had adequate quality for beef cattle. Spredor 4, a grazingtype, fall-dormant variety with some yellow flowering, also worked well in cow/calf pasture trials.

A newer variety PS3006, is a creeping-rooted variety used in grazing trials comparing different forage legumes and grasses in the blend. And AC Yellowhead, an older yellow-flower Siberian variet y, was another one used in blends along with other forage legumes and grasses.

“One of the neat things about alfalfa is that there are so many varieties — some with purple flowers and others with yellow — which have tremendous potential for adaptability to Canadian growing conditions,” says Lardner.

“Many varieties have tremendous tolerance of high pH soils and salinity with good production.”

Creeping rooted alfalfa varieties generally survive for long periods of time, but management has a significant impact on their longevity. Cultivars of creeping root varieties have varying levels of winter hardiness and disease resistance, higher yields in dry weather, salinity tolerance, and tolerate soil pH as low as 6.2. Tap-root type alfalfa tend to perform better in wetter areas than creeping root.

Lardner says a new research project is starting this year looking at the performance of forage species developed to grow in saline soils. Halo alfalfa, registered in 2013, is one of the newest varieties. It followed the salt tolerant Bridgeview alfalfa registered in 2011. And among grass species, AC Saltlander, a green wheatgrass, was registered in 2004. While it is difficult to predict weather cycles, Lardner says with wetter years followed by some dryer growing seasons, soil salinity is a concern in many areas. Farmers are interested in forage legumes and grass species that can return saline soils to productivity and help control weeds.

Lardner says over the years they have also compared alfalfa and other forage legumes in blends with various grass species. They compared PS3006 alfalfa in forage blends against cicer milkvetch and AC Glenview sainfoin blended with hybrid meadow brome grass.

And in another project it was AC Yellowhead alfalfa and AC Mountain View sainfoin blended with Russian wild r ye and hybrid meadow brome grass.

Lardner says there were no runaway standout per formances among the legumes — they all performed quite well, although growing conditions can be a factor. For example, in one project comparing an alfalfa/grass blend with a sainfoin /grass blend at t wo different growing sites, the sainfoin/ hybrid bromegrass or alfalfa /hybrid bromegrass pastures out yielded the alfalfa /Russian wild rye or sainfoin/ Russian wild rye pastures in a grazing trial near Lanigan, in central Saskatchewan, under good growing conditions.

At Swift Current in southern Saskatchewan, under drier conditions, the same two legume/grass blends performed about equally.

As might be expected, the forage yield and rates of gains on yearlings at the Lanigan site were between 10 to 15 per cent higher than at the Swift Current site. Moisture was the main contributing factor.

And on that point, he referred to a three-year study in southern Saskatchewan, with data still being analyzed, where they looked at including alfalfa in a pasture mix to help fill that late

summer/early fall period where grasses can run out of steam due to dry growing conditions — grass growth slows down or stops and quality can decline without moisture. “It is difficult to run a pasture program anywhere on only two or three inches of moisture,” says Lardner. “But alfalfa with deeper tap roots can go down and reach the moisture and still be fairly productive. We are still analyzing the numbers on this project, but we are happy with the results from the first two years. With good performance on the alfalfa it may have a role in carrying pastures and cattle through that late summer period.”

Alfalfa grazing management tips: Never turn hungry livestock into a pasture containing a high proportion of bloat-causing plants.

Fill animals with dry hay or grass pasture before beginning to graze high bloat-potential pastures.

Avoid turning animals onto fresh, high bloat-potential pasture that is moist with dew, rain, or irrigation water.

Both rate of intake and initial rate of digestion are higher from moist plants, causing more rapid initial digestion.

Never allow animals grazing high bloat-potential pasture to get so hungry that they consume too much in one feeding. Always have sufficient feed available.

Make paddock rotations mid-day or later to help minimize moisture and increase plant carbohydrate concentration.

Avoid dramatic changes in forage quality when rotating from paddock to paddock by leaving adequate residue.

Observe livestock closely the first several days and remove any “chronic-

bloating” animals.

Avoid grazing legumes before they begin to bloom. Make closer observations for bloat when many plants are at a younger growth stage.

Manage grazing to encourage livestock to consume low- or non-bloating plants and plant parts (such as an alfalfa/grass forage blend) rather than just succulent top growth. For example, use daily strip grazing or use high stock density in multiple paddock systems rather than continuous stocking.

Once grazing begins, don’t remove animals from pasture or make frequent, major changes in the type of pasture being grazed unless animals have greatly distended rumens. Mild bloat is common on high bloat-potential p a s t u r e s . Fr e q u e n t d i e t c h a n g e s prevent rumen microbes and animals from adapting to bloat pastures.

Be extra observant for cattle bloat when high bloat plants show a rapid flush of growth such as during cloudy, wet periods in the spring and after a plant stress event such as hail or drought.

Delay grazing high bloat-potential plants for three to five days after freeze damage.

Avo i d g r a z i n g a l f a l f a s t a n d s i n September as plants need adequate carbohydrate reserves for overwintering. Can graze above ground biomass after final fall killing frost.

Graze with animals that have smaller rumen capacities, like yearlings and calves, rather than mature cows.

Talk to your veterinarian about the advisability of using a product like Alfasure (mix with water to prevent frothy bloat).
