Hundreds of participants and volunteers took part in the Race of Vermilion hosted by The Good Life Institute on March 16.

Teams of four tried their best to complete 20 challenges and 10 detours e a c h a l o n g t w o d i f fe r e n t c i r c u i t s throughout the day. Items included scaling walls, wiring electrical, song and dance, yoga, archery, mini golf, tax preparation, and more. Participants were able to utilize their talents and encourage one another. “ We were super excited and had been preparing for a while,” said the Yahooligans.

“The Race of Vermilion is super fun.

It gives you different unique challenges to try and be creative and pulls on each of your strengths. It also gives you a chance to see what’s out there; we all come shopping here now,” said the Mazing Moms.

With teams travelling from all over, Mayor Caroline McAuley welcomed everyone and encouraged them to bring back many memories from Vermilion.

At the end of the day, competitors and volunteers met at the Vermilion Regional centre for a roast beef meal, and awards. Winners of the 2019 Race of Vermilion were the Knights Spraying team. Ten teams lined the ice, as dignitaries entered the Opening Ceremonies on March 15. Fans from all over the province attended and cheered as their teams played against the best Bantam players. Presented by ATB Financial, the Championships created a lot of excitement around Vermilion.

Representatives from the Edmonton Oilers, ATB Financial, Hockey Alberta, the Town of Vermilion, and Vermilion Minor Hockey shared encouraging words throughout the weekend. “ This is such an achievement; be proud of yourselves. Take a look around, you will cherish these memories for years to come,” said emcee Karen Selte, Vermilion Minor Hockey vice president.

H o c key A l b e r t a’s D a l e S c o t t thanked the committee volunteers for making the provincial championships a memorable experience for the participants, family members for supporting the athletes, and the players for working so hard. In Loving Memory Of

David James & Big River will be performing Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings tributes at the Vermilion Regional Centre at 7:30 p.m. on March 28.

The show will include a story telling journey featuring a multitude of Johnny Cash hits. Performer, David James, has studied and read his history, and even speaks like him. He participated in a documentary on Johnny Cash, ‘My Father and The Man In Black.’ He is a skilled harmonica player and will take the audience on a walk through time.

“Many people can remember where they were when those songs came on the radio,” said David James.

He will also be performing a Waylon Jennings tribute, with additional classic songs. With the same band, he will play both characters.

“The neat thing about Johnny and Waylon is that they were good friends; they were even roommates at one point,” said James.

The evening will see Phil Hagen as drummer as well as lead and backup vocals, Allen Metcalf on lead electric guitar, and our #1 road manager Todd Sacerty on backup vocals.

Upcoming Dewberry Dinner Theatre

The Dewberry Dinner Theatre Group will be hosting three performances of ‘The Masked Musketeer’ at the Dewberry Hall on March 29, 30, and 31.

Local cast members are eager to share the comedy/adventure play with the community. Set in a small 1800’s village in Spain, the play will incorporate romance and sword fighting.

We love getting into costume and making people laugh, all the while supporting the wonderful community of Dewberry,” said Orlean Woywitka.

Over the years, the event has raised over $35,000 that has been contributed to several community events and activities.

On March 29 and 30, doors will open at 6 p.m. with supper at 7 p.m. and show at 8 p.m. (tickets are $40). On March 31, a matinee performance will take place with doors opening at 1 p.m. and show at 2 p.m. (which will include a light fare and dessert for $30). Community members are anxiously anticipating the 12th Annual Rotary Sale, to be held at the Vermilion Curling Rink from April 11 – 13.

are already receiving calls of inquiry with the Garage Sale right around the corner. The sale provides an opportunity for community members to participate by donating their useable items to the sale. With the commitment of the Rotary Club that all proceeds from the sale will be invested in the community, they feel this project is a win-win for Vermilion and area.

“Your generous donations, whether moving, downsizing, or just spring cleaning, will be turned into funding to support local initiatives and enhance what our community has to offer,” said Brenda Lee, project chair.

She went on to say that in the 11 years the club has hosted the sale, over $154,000 has been raised for local projects resulting in support for youth leadership programs, spor ting events, school programs, support and care for local seniors, health care equipment at the Vermilion Health Care Centre, community infrastructure projects and youth organizations.

Each year the club selects a show-

case project to receive the first $5,000 raised at the sale. This year funds will suppor t the St. Jerome’s Inclusive Playground Project.

Sale items are not individually priced, but go with the expectation that Rotarians have committed to be good stewards of the generous donations they’ve received and will entertain acceptable offers. According to Lee, this is a worthy fundraiser for a club who puts so much back into the community.

She went on to recognize partners that contribute to the sale’s functionality. The Town of Vermilion, Vermilion Agricultural So c iet y, L akeland Mall, and the Vermilion Curling Club all contribute tables to ensure Rotarians have what is needed to receive and display the merchandise donated.

Rotarians, their spouses and family members, local youth partners, and Friends of Rotary put in many hours to organize the donations to be ready for shoppers when the doors open. EST students from Lakeland Emergency Training Centre volunteer to assist with the clean-up.

Sharing the unsold items offers the potential to other wor thy organizations to raise funds for their projects and good works. “Rotar y is thrilled the community has embraced this project and participated in its success. The Garage Sale has become a real community event, and we, Rotarians, are just fortunate enough to host it!” said Lee. Donation receiving will commence on Saturday, April 6 as well as the following Monday and Tuesday, April 8 and 9. Rotary members do offer a pickup ser vice for items people are unable to drop off, but they must call.

Marlene Dorothy Lawrence April 23, 1949 – January 30, 2019

We would like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt thanks for the love and support that we received during Marlene's cancer journey and her passing. Thank you to everyone who visited Marlene while she was in Edmonton, cared for our house and the yard in our absence. We were overwhelmed with the phone calls, Facebook messages, cards, flowers and food that we received while there. Marlene truly appreciated the support which meant a great deal to her and our family. It brought a lot of joy on the more difficult days of her treatments.

To Dr. Kruger, Dr. Liebenberg, the nurses and the entire staff at the Vermilion Health Care Centre – we will never be able to express our gratitude for everything that you did for Marlene and our family while she was in hospital. The care, concern and attention we received in the Palliative Care suite was second to none. To have received that level of care, 24 hours a day, was exceptional.

To our family at Lakeland Funeral Home, you brought us and Marlene the peace she desired.

You were with us on the most difficult days, guiding us to honour Marlene and the life she lived. How we were cared for was not only the call of the profession, but a testament to the extraordinary people you are.

To Father Roger for your spiritual guidance during this difficult time and the visits with Marlene when she was unable to attend church. It meant so much to her. Her funeral service was a true reflection of the person we all loved so much.

To the Ladies Lunch Group, the Clandonald Hall Committee, Pat Bardoel, the volunteers of the St. Columbia Catholic Cemetery, Geralyn McCormack, Lorna Garnier, Paulette Moir, Gloria de Jong, Carolyn DeFord, Lillian Griebel, the Gift Bearers, the Pallbearers, the Vermilion Fire Department members, the staff at St. Jerome's School and the Vermilion Quilter's Guild – thank you from the bottom of our hearts for everything you did to honour our wife, mother and grandmother on the day of her funeral service.

Town of Vermilion Submitted

The upcoming organics program in Vermilion was discussed during the Town Council meeting on March 5.

The Organics Management Program request for proposal closed on January 25, 2019. One submission was received from ProHortiCo Green Solutions Inc. which is a local landscape company operated by Jared Fehr.

There are a number of steps that need to be completed prior to opening the compost site. The first step is to get approval from Alberta Environment and develop an operations manual; this is expected to take roughly 2-3 months and can be completed at a cost of $15,000.

tion of the site as per the conditions and regulations from Alberta Environment, and could possibly be completed with the assistance from Town staff. The costs for the second steps are not know at this time as it will be contingent on the conditions and requirements set out

The last step will be a longer term agreement that would only address the operation of the facility and potentially a lease agreement. Council approved ProHor tiCo Green Solutions Inc. to obtain approval from Alber ta Environment and develop the operations manual and site requirements for a Photo submitted compost pad.

The March meeting of the Vermilion Royal Purple Lodge welcomed the National President, Kelly Christman, from Bassano, Alberta. Visitors from Lloydminster, Mannville, and Myrnam also attended. The National President travels to visit lodges in five provinces in Canada, speaking about the charitable activities of the Royal Purple, “Your Cause is our Cause”.

The Vermilion and Mannville lodges are anxious about hosting the Alberta Royal Purple Lodges Association Society conference in June welcoming all lodges from Alberta.

When you eat spinach you probably will not be able to quickly pop a bicep muscle like Popeye, but you will however be contributing to your overall health.

This is a yummy salad that is easy to make, and full of lots of health benefits. If you are gluten free, you can skip the mustard in the recipe, with good results. It is a great salad to make the night before and take to work, just keep the dressing and salad separate until just before you eat. Bon appétit.

Spinach Salad (single serving) 2-3 cups spinach leaves 1 tablespoon dried cranberries 5 cherry tomatoes, halved or sliced apple 1 tablespoon chopped red onion

2 slices of bacon chopped 1/2 cup mushrooms fried in butter, with salt & pepper 1 - 2 tablespoons nuts, such as sliced almonds or walnuts.

Dressing (single serving) 1 tablespoon Olive oil or avocado oil 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar 1 1/2 teaspoon honey 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoons water A shake of pepper 1/8 teaspoon each of basil, oregano & onion powder 1 clove of garlic pressed (you can use 1/2 of a clove as well) 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional) Combine and shake all ingredients

The Ides Of March And Mr. Mungall’s Mythology Class

Now you probably couldn’t say that this description of the middle of March means more to many in these parts than looking forward to perhaps the first day of spring coinciding with the first arrival of a spell of decent warm spring weather. There has some relief seeing it in this household certainly after enduring the coldest February in 40 years. Unfortunately the outdoor rink rapidly met its demise right along with it.

Sigh. Now in my youth whenever someone happened to mention the ‘Ides’ it was less historical Roman dictators beware of conspirators with knives and more beware of hysterical laughter at the classic comedy series SCTV, particularly the episode of Julius Caesar/CCCP1. Not

sure I’ve encountered anything funnier in my 50 years but sometimes the things you find amusing all come down to the timing, coincidence, and having the right frame of reference. Now the ‘funny’ thing about that was, not that it was Eugene Levy playing the character Bobby Bittman as Julius Caesar getting stabbed to death by conspirators Joe Flaherty and John Candy, but shortly before that show aired I had taken Mr. Mungall’s Grade 7 Mythology Class at J.R. Robson High.

But then again Mr. Mungall was not like any other teachers I had before or since, so perhaps it was less organized curriculum and more his unique offering. It’s funny that a date in mid March can connect you to thinking of which subjects learned in school have benefitted you the most …reading, writing, and arithmetic obviously…but that Mythology class is right up there. I feel rather fortunate I was there at the right time to take that class because it related to so many cultural things appreciated since that I may not have learned about otherwise.

Add in Mr. Mungall’s Grade 7 Language Arts and Creative Writing classes along with the Mythology, it’s likely lead to most of the words printed in this column.

It was in the spring of 1901 when two friends, Hugh Evans and Lance Playne, made their way to Canada. Arriving in Calgary, they travelled up to Edmonton and then took a raft down the Saskatchewan River and filed a claim near Two Hills, followed by claims for homesteads near what would one day be Vermilion.

Due to the remote nature of the area from Edmonton at the time, the two men often had to make long journeys to the city to get supplies. This often meant dealing with lots of mud, especially in the spring, causing trips to take a week or more to make.

In 1906, Lillian Evans arrived in Canada and began tending house for the two men.

Two years later, she would marry Lance.

The couple were the first to be married at the newly constructed Pleasant Valley Church. In 1909, the couple had triplets, sadly one died only ten days later.

In 1916, Lance became very ill with typhoid fever and Lillian helped him through the worst of the condition. Once he had recovered, they travelled to England to visit his parents. Lance would travel back on his own since his wife and children could not join him due to the First World War and the danger of submarines sinking ships. They would arrive back in Canada in 1918. In 1919, another son was born.

In 1919, a severe winter arrived and killed dozens of cattle owned by the families. Food was scarce and it was a hard winter to get through for everyone.

Thankfully, everyone survived and upon the arrival of spring, food was planted and became abundant for the families again.

In 1949, Lance and his wife retired, leaving their son Frank to farm the land until 1974. That would be the same year that Lance Payne would pass away.

Hugh for his part would marry and have two daughters. His wife was so afraid of their daughter becoming sick, they would keep her in a grape basket on the oven door and keep everyone away for fear

that germs would make her sick.

The children of each family would grow up together, having a good childhood on their homesteads through beautiful summers and frigid winters.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHILD’S MOTOR SKILL DEVELOPMENT Developing motor skills is a critical stage in your baby’s life. When it comes to fostering your growing child’s social and physical abilities, nothing beats hands-on parenting.

The beginning Your child wasn’t entirely helpless at birth, having acquired certain reflexes

while still in the womb. Baby’s fragile, delicate appearance can be attributed to his under-developed muscles, which are constantly evolving to adapt to his new environment. After a few months, he’s able to hold his head up for a few seconds and bend his limbs on his own.

Around seven months, your child will try to sit down on his own. You can lend a hand by showing him how it’s done. A bit later, you’ll notice him lying on his stomach and moving his limbs: that’s an early (and somewhat unsuc-

cessful) attempt at moving around on all fours! Spend lots of time showing him the way forward, and he’ll get the hang of crawling in no time. Finally, around eleven months, your child will start trying to stand up — an unmistakable sign that baby’s first steps are just around the corner.

PLAGIOCEPHALY: FLAT HEAD SYNDROME The skull of a newborn is highly malleable (namely to facilitate delivery) and remains so for around 18 months until its bones have fused together into their permanent position. As this process unfolds, some infants — usually around four to six months — develop an oddly shaped head; this condition is known as flat head syndrome, or plagiocephaly.

To avoid permanent malformations, parents should intervene at the first sign of flat head syndrome and inform their child’s pediatrician, who can step in if necessary.

Prevention To minimize the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), today’s pediatricians recommend putting babies to sleep on their back. Renovating Your Home? Ask Yourself These 8 Questions First (NC) You might be surprised to learn there are many health hazards around the home, particularly when taking on any kind of renovation project— even for something as easy as painting a room.

But by educating yourself and taking the right precautions, you’ll help keep you and your family safe.

Here are eight important safety questions that Health Canada encourages you to ask yourself before starting your project: Could the products I am using be harmful? Be sure to follow all use and safety instructions on the label, including how to store and dispose of any leftover products. Remember to look for hazard symbols.

Should I be worried about lead-based

paint? Your home probably contains lead-based paint if it was built before 1960. If the paint is in good condition and is not on a surface that a child might chew or that is subject to wear and tear, it’s best to leave it alone or cover it with paint or wallpaper. But if the paint is cracking, chipping, flaking or peeling, or is on a surface that a child might chew or that is subject to wear and tear, you’ll need to remove it carefully to avoid kicking up lead dust.

You can reduce your risk of exposure by hiring a professional to test for asbestos before doing any renovations or remod-

This odour can indicate that the product contains volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Some chemical products are labelled as “low emission,” which means they give off fewer VOCs and are safer for your health.

Should I ventilate while I renovate? Yes – ventilation can help improve indoor air quality by removing pollutants from the home and by bringing in fresh air from outside. This is especially important when renovating or when using chemical products in the home.

How should I dress? Labels on prod-

ucts used for renovations will include information about what to wear and precautions to take. This could include using gloves, safety goggles or masks and keeping the products away from other hazardous materials.

Can my family take part? It’s best to keep children and pets safely away from the renovation area. Pregnant women should also avoid taking part in renovation projects.

How do I dispose of leftover materials safely? As your project wraps up, continue to keep safety in mind. Read the label or contact your municipality for advice on how to dispose of any leftover chemical products.

Approximately 50 cross country skiers competed in the Beckie Scott Loppett at the Vermilion Provincial Park on March 16.

Hosted by the Vermilion Nordic Ski Club, this was the first one held in over 3 years due to snow and weather conditions. Participants ranged from approximately age 6 – 60, and distances from 2 – 30 kilometers could be chosen.

“Some of the racers were looking for their best time, and some were just out to challenge themselves. The club is 45 years old; it was started in 1974 by Jan and the late Walter Scott. Competitors attended from all over; Elk Point, Wainwright, Cut Knife, and Edmonton,” said volunteer Vaughn Cooper.

Volunteer Todd Ree said, “We love the culture within the sport. I’ve never met a group of people so committed to the activity. I just came back from teaching children

to ski in a northern Alberta community. After mild hesitation at the beginning, by the end of the class, you couldn’t get them to take their skis off. Cross country skiing is hard work, and thus it is a shared experience.

People understand what you are suffering through or enjoying.”

They went on to say that people really enjoy skiing the trails in Vermilion. With classic technique if people can make it up the big hills, they feel like they have accomplished something. Race conditions were good with lots of snow and warmer weather.

They went on to thank Charles Lychak and Darryl Lysens from Alberta Parks for setting the tracks, as well as the club volunteers.

Senior Boys Basketball won Zones in Fort McMurray for the second year running and headed to Provincials in High Level last weekend. At the end of the day Monday before leaving for Provincials (a 9 hour trip), students and staff gathered in the gym to cheer them on and watch a short skills competition between the team members.

The Senior Girls Curlers attended Provincials in St Paul March 7-9. They played 4 games but faced tough competition and only won one of them. However, they had the chance to meet Randy Ferbey (he won the Briar from ‘01 to ‘03) and Rachel Homan (also a professional curler, won the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in ‘13, ‘14,’17, and ‘19).

With curling and basketball winding down, the badminton season has just started.

V e r m i l i o n E l e m e n t a r y School is pleased to offer an after school art club to our Grades 4-6 students. The club would meet Monday after school from 3:305:00 in the reading intervention classroom. We are looking to run sessions for 5 weeks starting on March 18 and run until April 15. The art activity that the students will be involved in is to paint a ceiling tile to be used in the hallway. Please make sure you stop by the school and take a look once we have them installed. We will showcase the students with their art in a picture in the front display case, and students will get a copy of this picture to take home.

Mrs. Schroeder and Mrs. Smith have been busy using the 3D printers for the Grade 7 Bridges and Grade 8 Gears projects. The students plan and design according to the specifications they are given and once complete, visit the Learning Commons to download the file. Once printed, they have a physical representation of their design. If there are any issues with their original design, they need to go back and change the design to correct any mistakes.

Parent-teacher interviews will be held on March 28 and on April 17 between 5-8 p.m. If you would like to book an interview, you can do it online by going to our website http://jrrobson.btps.ca and clicking the ‘Parent Teacher Interviews’ link on the bottom right side of our home page. You will need to register for an account if you haven’t already.

During the March 28 parent-teacher interviews, AHS will be doing a special vaping presentation in the Learning

Commons at 7 p.m. Come learn the facts and dangers of vaping.

Our next Parent Advisory Council meeting will be on Monday, March 25 at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome. It will be the second to last meeting for this school year.

Boys Basketball finished off their season representi n g S t . J e r o m e’s at the Zones Tournament in Vegreville on March 8/9. In their final game the boys defeated Marwayne 92-39 earning the Bronze medal. What a terrific way to end the season! A special note of thanks to coach, Mr. Sader for sharing his time and talent with this group of dedicated young men and for believing in the boys throughout the season!

Born and raised in the Edmonton area, TO came to Vermilion in 2004 to teach art to teens and has resided there since. She arrived armed with a love for art, working with children, her Art Minor and a Bachelor of Education degree. Her formal art training comes from the University of Alberta and Red Deer College, and is deeply influenced by two mentors and fellow Alberta artists—Sandra Miller and the late Lawrence Kenakin. TO’s artistic endeavors are drawn out in the classroom, workshops, in commission work, and art shows and exhibitions. Her body of art is a variety of charcoal, pencil, paint, and printmaking, revealing her Jack-of-All-Paints experimental spirit. TO’s collection of work also captures subjects and styles of all sort—nature, nudes, people, pets, cartoons, abstract, photorealism; her refusal to commit to one topic or style makes it entertaining to try and pinpoint amongst others which pieces are hers.

Aside from art, TO adds color to her life with her husband and son by searching for the balance between mindful and fast-paced living, dining at mom-and-pop restaurants, fishing, seeing and smelling the Rocky Mountains, woodworking, living out of a suitcase, snowboarding, kittens, trying to convince people that she’s a grownup, fantasizing about racecar driving, laughing once a day until she cries, and being around her favorite people.

Elk Point RCMP Track Stolen Vehicle Leading To Arrests

Elk Point, Alberta - On Friday March 15, 2019, the Elk Point RCMP received a report that an A.T.V. was stolen from a residence in Frog Lake First Nations. Police located the vehicle with the A.T.V. in the box only a few minutes after the call came

in approximately one kilometre away. Elk Point RCMP alongside the Cold Lake Police Dog Service attempted to stop the vehicle using a tire deflation device and the vehicle came to a stop shortly after at a rural residence in the Fishing Lake Metis Settlement. The truck used in the commission of the offence had also been reported

Bull Selection: Using Economically Relevant Traits

Sire selection often encompass a variety of factors such as how well a bull fits into the breeding objectives of your operation, breed, conformation, pedigree, birthweight, and price. Recent surveys from western Canada in 2014 and 2017, Ontario in 2015/16, northern Ontario and Quebec in 2015/16, and Atlantic Canada in 2016/17 production years asked respondents to rank their top bull selection criteria. There

wasn’t a lot of variation between regions with breed, conformation, pedigree, birth weight, individual performance, expected progeny differences (EPDs), and temperament all being highly ranked by survey participants.

Some of the criteria, like breed, may influence sire selection due to the desire to capture heterosis or breed complementarity effects. Conformation is important for longevity and ensuring the bull gets the job done during the breeding season. Having

a bull with a desirable temperament makes everyone’s lives easier, especially if there are children or older individuals involved in the operation. Individual performance and birth weight may give some indication of how the bull’s progeny may perform, but a better indicator in this area is actually the bull’s EPDs. Response to selection using EPDs is 7-9 times more effective than selecting based on individual animal performance7.

The question is, how well do these various selection criteria translate into profit?

Answering this question means taking a look at your operation.

• What are your breeding/marketing goals?

• Which traits affect the profitability of your operation?

• What constraints does your operation have (forage resources, labour, etc.)?

• Do you raise your own replacements or purchase them4?

Once those questions are answered, there are likely a number of traits you have identified as important to your operation.

While a number of data sources exist to help you evaluate the contribution of a potential herd sire to improving the traits of interest, it is important to recognize whether the traits you have identified are indicator or economically relevant traits. Good record keeping is crucial to determine whether or not progress is being made in the traits you have identified as important to your operation’s productivity and profit-

ability.

Economically relevant traits (ERTs) or Indicators?

Economically relevant traits (ERTs) are those that are directly associated with a source of revenue, or a cost. Not all EPDs represent ERTs – instead they use a related (or indicator) trait to estimate the ERT. One of the best examples is birth weight.

Decreasing a bull’s birth weight by 5 lbs does not have any associated income or costs, but is often used as a bull buying criteria in an effort to reduce calving problems.

The actual ERT in this case is calving ease, as an increase in calving problems will reduce calf survival (less calves to sell), incurs higher labour costs (pulling calves, or more time spent monitoring), and delays cow rebreeding (younger and lighter calves to sell next year).

Similarly, ultrasound for carcass traits is another suite of common indicator traits, while the ERTs are the actual carcass measurements (weight, yield, and marbling).

We all recognize fertility (in both sires and dams) as a trait that has the biggest impacts on profitability. But fertility has relatively low heritability, meaning that cumulative environmental influences (e.g. nutrition, weather, etc.) generally have a larger impact than genetics. In Canada, some genetic evaluations do not report any EPDs at all for ERTs related to female fertility. While most evaluations include scrotal circumference (indicator), it actually has a near zero relationship with heifer pregnancy rate (ERT) Continued on page 23

Continued from page 22 In the Canadian context, a stayablity or length of productive life type of EPD (probability of an animal remaining in the herd for X period of time or awarding more credit to cows remaining longer in the herd), while an ERT itself, is also the best proxy for fertility given the lack of EPDs in this area, as the most common reason for a cow to be culled is because she’s open.

When EPDs for both indicator and ERTs for the same trait are included in genetic evaluations (e.g. calving ease and birth weight), make sure you focus on the EPD for the ERT and not the indicator trait. The indicator trait cannot add more information to the selection process, as it is already used in the calculation of the EPD for the ERT in the first place. When an EPD for an indicator trait is available, but no EPD exists for the ERT (e.g. scrotal circumference and heifer pregnancy rate), it can result in an over or under-estimation of the ability of the indicator trait to predict the ERT3.

By focusing on the ERTs, you can eliminate those bits of information that will not directly impact your operation’s profitability.

For example, if you’re using a terminal system (not keeping replacements) and selling at weaning, the weaning weight EPD is going to be one of your most important ERTs. If you tend to retain ownership through to slaughter, the more relevant ERTs are carcass weight, quality, and yield grades.

In some cases, whether a published EPD is an indicator or ERT will depend on how that EPD is reported. For example, carcass trait EPDs calculated using combination of ultrasound and actual carcass data would be ERTs (e.g. marbling score), but those reported on an ultrasound data basis (e.g. percent intramuscular fat) would be indicators. Examples include the Canadian Simmental Association’s All Purpose Index (API) and Terminal Index (TI), AgSight’s BIO$ Economic Ind ex, or the Canad ian Herefor d Association’s Maternal Productivity Index (MPI) and Feedlot Merit Index (FPI). The indices offered by most breed associations are fairly robust across pro duc tion environments, keeping in mind their overall objective – don’t expect high ranking terminal index bulls to give you stellar replacement heifers.

Ideally, selection indices would be tailored to each individual operation’s identified ERTs, with dif ferent economic weightings depending on the production system, but the creation of customized selection indices with real-world economic weightings requires detailed cost and return

information and a complete understanding of the complex genetic relationships between traits. This type of model may also present some difficulty for seedstock producers, as marketing based on a fluid index (where a bull could be in the top 1% for X trait in one type of production system, but only in the top 50% for the same trait in another production system) would be challenging.4 Regardless, the amount of detailed information required to populate these types of models may not be readily available for the average producer.
