Lakeland College’s hosted the Little Royal Rodeo in combination with Information Sessions from March 8 – 10 in Vermilion.

Prospective students and their families were thrilled to see first-hand the opportunities available through Human Services, Interior Design, Trades, as well as Agricultural and Environmental Science programs. Staff provided helpful hints, and people had the opportunity to ask current students questions about their experiences. Other Information Sessions were also held in Lloydminster.

Approximately 50 people gathered to watch the 2nd Annual Tractor Races on March 8. Participants had salvaged scrap lawn mowers and learned about small engines as they prepared them for the race. The audience cheered as one another would pass, and when stuck in the snow and when belts fell off, club members would stop to help one another out. Overall, everyone enjoyed the exhilarating event.

strations. Throughout the weekend, people also enjoyed a Western Canadian Judging Competition, dog agility and stock dog demonstrations, as well as a steer and heifer show. Each year, people are blown away with the number of possibilities at Lakeland College as well as the focus towards hands-on learning.

Upcoming World Down Syndrome Day

Vermilion’s Kim and Kurt Bodurka are looking forward to celebrating World Down Syndrome Day on March 21.

According to https://cdss.ca/, 45,000 Canadians live with Down syndrome.

There are three types of Down syndrome; Trisomy 21, Translocation, and Mosaicism, and people with the most popular (Trisomy 21) have an extra 21st chromosome. The Canadian Down Syndrome Society also states that one in 800 births results in Down syndrome, and that it’s a genetic condition not a disorder, illness, or disease.

“We are celebrating to bring awareness to Down syndrome and support our fouryear-old son Kennedy,” said Kim Bodurka.

She went on to say that Kennedy’s case was unique because he had not been diagnosed until he was over a year old. Kennedy was 9 lb. 14 oz at birth, had to be resuscitated and was jaundice. From then on, he was a good baby and at health check-ups the couple were only encouraged to feed him more due to his ranking on regular growth charts. At the time of his first year needles, he was flagged for early intervention (due to his size).

“Afterward, I searched Google and found the Down Syndrome Clinic at the Stollery Children’s Hospital and called them directly to get an appointment. We were told he could have been in heart failure,” said Kim. Because of his incredible flexibility they were told that Down syndrome was a possibility, but they did genetic testing to find out for sure. Even after a positive diagnosis, Kennedy had to wait one year to get his heart tested; his heart was perfect.

“At first, we were adjusting and asking ourselves, ‘What will we do for school or services with nothing around here? What is he going to be like when he grows up? Will we have to move from here; the place we were raised?’ After attending workshops at the Edmonton Down Syndrome Society, we

felt much better.

“You go through stages of grief, but now I am loud and proud! We feel we had the advantage of not knowing for a year because we got to know Kennedy as himself and not his disability. As a result, we continue treating him like a typical kid because we don’t know how to treat him any differently. We will never know if he is doing so well because we treated him like a typical kid for the first year but I believe it had something to do with it.” said Kim. His Doctor at the Stollery has been so great with us, and does a lot of doctoring over the phone which is a big help. Everyone has been very supportive,” said Kurt Bodurka.

Now, Kennedy continues to work on his delayed speech, but so far his vision is perfect, and he is not celiac. He continues to go for hearing tests every six months, and sees a pediatric ophthalmologist yearly. He currently weighs the same as his younger sister, Reese, but they are over two years apart (children with Down Syndrome have a different growth chart, and according to that, Kennedy is above average).

Kennedy attends Brighter Beginnings four days per week for speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. He is also enrolled in his second year of dance lessons at Dance Impression by Ryan.

“Originally, Kennedy did not like crowds, but he was able to participate in the year end recital. I think it has helped him come out of his shell,” said Kim. “Vermilion has been so supportive. We are thankful to Susan Kern for welcoming him at Brighter Beginnings; it’s an amazing program. It gave us a ray of light that he can be in school right until graduation.

We are also thankful to Miss. Ryan Wilson for helping him to keep active and strong,” said Kurt.

“He signs, ‘Please,’ and, ‘Thank you,’ at Cornerstone Co-op when receiving a cookie, and the staff engage by signing

“His sister has also helped him develop; they are inseparable. He loves dressing up. He’s got the best imagination I’ve ever seen,” said Kim who also noted that his expressions and joy are overwhelming.

She suggested for people to treat others normally and to participate in Rock Your Socks on March 21, to show that people with Down syndrome are more alike than different. The date signifies 3 - 21 to celebrate those with three of the 21st chromosome, and is a campaign to create conversation about diversity, uniqueness, inclusion and acceptance. Participants around the world are simply asked to wear different socks on that day; they could be bright or colourful, short or long.

“I want to educate people. We love our son, and my hope is that even one person struggling with the idea would choose not to terminate their pregnancy as a result of a Down syndrome diagnosis. The more people talk about it the better.

They say that if you are a family of a child with Down syndrome, that you are one of the lucky few. John Karwandy passed away on March 4, 2019 in Vermilion, Alberta at the age of 93 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Yolande; children Paul Karwandy, Christine (Mark) Conacher, John Jacob Karwandy, Rose Marie (Ian) Radford, Timothy (Roxanne) Karwandy, Cecily (Larry) Bardoel, Michael Karwandy, Barb Karwandy, Douglas (Lee) Karwandy; 18 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; sister Eunice Marosits; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A Funeral Mass was held at the Vermilion Holy Name of Jesus Roman Catholic Church on Friday, March 8, 2019 at 11:00 a.m.

Westend Manor Senior’s Protest

Resid ents of Westend M anor in Vermilion held a protest on March 4, in regards to recent changes made to the smoking policy by the Vermilion & District Housing Foundation (VDHF).

According to resident Ellenor Cleland, t wo year s ag o the VDHF had smoking residents pay half ($300 each) for air filtration systems to be put in their homes as well as $100 every three months for filters. As a result of a recent complaint, the smoking policy has now been altered to reflect the Town of Vermilion bylaw, as well as provincial and federal law effective July 1, 2019 Resident, Jenny Gray, has been pushing for the smoking policy to be changed for the past four years and met with VDHF CAO Paul Kim on January

Members of the Vermilion Ministerial Association hosted the 2019 Vermilion Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast at the Vermilion Regional Centre on March 5.

Participants joined together in praying for all elected officials and school trustees. Topics of prayer included perseverance and courage, family, unity, clear communication, patience and grace, balance and openness, wisdom, and vision.

Community Closet Donations

The Vermilion Community Closet donated $4,200 on March 6, to a variety of local youth organizations and events.

The Rotary Music Festival, Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association, Dance Impressions Society, and Vermilion Dance Association each received $250. Vermilion Dance Association Instructor, Taylor Phillips said, “We are grateful for these funds to put towards dance fees in order to keep dance more accessible and affordable for the community. We are also fundraising for different flooring in a secondary room at the Regional Centre, and are looking forward to hosting a festival April 26 - 27.”

Stephanie Pawluk noted that the funds for the Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association will go to support their festival April 12 – 14. The Vermilion Skating Club received $200, and the Vermilion Girl Guides and the Bantam ‘B’ Provincial Championships each received $500.

Mel Dary noted that the Championships may bring as many as 1,200 visitors to Vermilion for the weekend and expects that

it will be great for the community.

Carmen Zayac represented both the Vermilion Roar Lacrosse and Girl Guides.

She noted that the Girl Guides will be using their funds towards travel to Saskatoon and Jasper for members to tour museums, and experience hiking and camping. She noted that Vermilion Roar will be purchasing new equipment as well as new jerseys this year.

Vermilion Roar and the St. Jerome’s Catholic School Playground Equipment Project each received $1,000. This project will include a recycled tire transformation to make the playground more accessible to community members.

“We are very thankful; it’s huge, and we are very happy with the support we have been getting. We hope to begin construction towards the end of summer,” said Principal Allan Chase.

“Supporting the community is what we are here for. Thanks to everyone that has supported us throughout the year so that we are able to continue giving back,” said volunteer Rose Hardy who noted that the Community Closet’s half price sale will continue until March 29.

St. Savior’s Anglican Church held a Pancake Supper on March 5, in honour of Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) or Shrove Tuesday.

The religious celebration is held prior to Ash Wednesday to mark the beginning of the season of lent, a time of self-reflection and penitence by fasting from certain foods. According to a St. Savior’s bulletin, traditionally to prepare for the time of fasting stocks of eggs, butter and fat would need to be used up, (the basic ingredients in a pancake).

The band highlighted each of their African music, funky old soul, and old seemed to enjoy the lively set and spot on talents by playing groovy blues, upbeat time country. With a full house, everyone instrumentals.

The Vermilion Folk Club hosted highly acclaimed artists, Tri-Continental at the Vermilion Legion on March 10.

The group of talented musicians has 10 Juno awards for their individual work, and has several albums together showcasing a combination of world, blues, and western music. Tri-Continental had the audience in Vermilion clapping along and even up dancing along with enthusiasm.

They played a range of genres including songs from their new album, ‘Dust Dance’.

Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Sugar Free Banana Bread

Have you ever ended up with some bananas that are over ripe? Don’t toss them; you can turn them into yummy banana bread.

If you don’t have time to bake, you can pop the bananas into the freezer, in their skin, and use them at a later date for baking. This recipe is gluten free, dairy free and sugar free because sometime people with dietary challenges such as allergies and blood sugar problems need a little something as well.

Bananas in general are an excellent source of potassium and a good source of fiber and as they ripen then become richer in antioxidants. The avocado oil,

olive oil and coconut flour are sources of healthy fat, which our body needs for the outer membrane of all of the cells in our body. Yes healthy fat is that important. Oat bran and coconut flour are a good source of fiber. In fact this whole loaf contains 24 grams of fiber. Oat bran also contains beta-glucan, which has been shown to help reduce bad cholesterol. Both the oat bran and the coconut flour have good protein levels and a lower glycemic index, to help offset the gluten free flour. If you are diabetic go ahead and add the additional egg, to increase the protein content of the loaf.

The cinnamon and ginger have blood sugar balancing properties and ginger is anti-inflammatory. Stevia is a natural sweetener, made from leave of a plant that has been consumed for 1,500 years

Already a couple years have passed since I wore a Maple Leaf for a March month that ended with a Bronze medal out of it for Team Canada Men’s 45+ at

the Mini World Cup. For the first time in 18 years for any of the age ranges in the competition, March 2019 a Canadian squad is actually going into the tournament defending a spot on the podium. Once more I’ve managed to join the squad but I will instead (due to an injury suffered shortly before the roster deadline) be joining the coaching staff as an assistant and patrolling a gate for the forwards as the offensive coach. Now obviously it may not be at the level of the Bronze medal recently won by Captain Christine Sinclair and the Canadian women at the Algarve Cup, or even the World or Gold Cup. Far from it. However, when it comes to adult indoor amateur soccer in Alberta, it’s basically about as good as it gets.

in its sights, has recently taken an upswing in its commitment to soccer on a number of levels leading off with FC Edmonton beginning play at Clarke Stadium in the new Canadian Premier league this summer. Indoor soccer facilities have also really taken a number of steps for ward recently with the Commonwealth Stadium Field house expansion, the new Edmonton Soccer Dome (along the QE2 at the Edmonton Scottish site) which is one of the largest indoor facilities of its kind in North America, and a projected expansion of 2 new fields added to the Edmonton Soccer Center South facility. There is even plans for a temporary dome to cover the Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium during the winter months so that field can used for amateur teams much the same as Foote Field is on

the U of A campus. So…with all those plans and facilities coming into place the sport of soccer during the winter months is finally gaining ground in Northern Alberta for places to play.

Certainly better than the gymnasiums and makeshift accommodations we used to play in in the old days. Will it translate into that first goal by Canada at the World Cup in 2026? Canada didn’t get one in its only appearance in 1986…but who knows. I never would have thought when I played for the Vermilion Strikers in the 90’s that my travels would eventually cross paths with former Team Canada coach Sean Fleming. He’s not on the bench on our little MWC team to be sure, but you got the feeling rubbing shoulders with him that soccer in Canada is finally getting somewhere.

Lakeland College Recognized As One Of Alberta’s Top Employers

Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships Ready To Go In Vermilion

Submitted Vermilion – The Lakeland College Bantam Tigers are proud to host the 2019 Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships, presented by ATB Financial, for the Bantam B division.

The tournament star ts on Thursday March 14, and continues through Sunday, March 17. Games will be played at the Vermilion Stadium and the Vermilion Arena located at 5510 College Drive.

Ten teams will be participating at the Provincial Championships, including the host Lakeland College Bantam Tigers.

The teams will be vying for a spot in the gold medal final on Sunday, and a chance to win the Provincial crown.

Pool plays will begin on Thursday March 14 at 1 p.m. and will continue until the last Round Robin game on Saturday March 16 at 6:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. respectively. The top four teams qualify for the semi-finals, which will be held Sunday March 17 at 9 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. respectively.

a partner and family to share the load of child care and farming,” Bernard says. “If family isn’t an option, having that friend, that person from church, that contact you can call in the crunch moments, to ask for three hours of child care is a necessity for a farm mom because those moments will happen and being able to ask for that help will be your saving grace.”

Plan ahead There are sometimes extended periods when the balancing act is even more pronounced, such as when a family welcomes a new baby. Backswath Management Inc. consultant associate, Denise Filipchuck, offers these tips to help farm families plan for maternity/parental leave: 1. Have a benefit plan that includes maternity/parental leave for farm owners. One option is belonging to the Chamber of Commerce where business owners, including farmers, are eligible to join a group insurance plan. “There are multiple plans and levels for farm owners to choose from for themselves and their employees,” says Filipchuck.

Celebrating AG Week 2019

The alarm goes off, your feet hit the floor, and you flip the bathroom switch. You walk through the hallway into the kitchen, and turn on the lights. After filling the coffee pot or kettle, you plug it in, push start, and a few minutes later you have your morning brew. You grab the remote and turn on the morning news, while you unplug your phone charger. How many times a day do you use electricity? In the first few minutes of your day you flip on, plug in, turn on, and unplug from electricity without giving it a second thought.

Apart from the click of a switch, the voice of an announcer on TV, or the noise of the appliances– electricity just quietly does its job.

These days electricity travels quietly from pole to pole through lines strung across rural Alberta. Thirty-two Rural Electrification Associations (REA) distribute electricity across hundreds of kilometres of line to over 41,000 members. Those REAs are part of a larger cooperative movement in Canada dating back to the 1840s that now includes over 9,000 co-ops in nearly every business sector imaginable.

Thank you to our rural power co-ops for lighting the way.

When a co-op of any kind forms, it is exciting and people are involved. But, over time, it all becomes routine, similar to flipping on the light switch. There are the annual meetings with dry financials and bylaws to vote on. Years pass, the excitement wanes, and people go back to their busy lives. Alberta REAs have gone through the same ups and downs, but the REA distribution system has quietly hummed along providing reliable and cost effective power to rural residents.

Amidst that quiet reliability we noticed a worrisome trend. Some REA members don’t know they are members. Others may be aware they are members, but they have no idea what the value is apart from being able to turn on lights and appliances at will.

We want to reverse that trend and you can help.

Check your power bill and see if your power is distributed by an REA. If it is, call your REA to validate your member information.

Add the next Annual General Meeting to your calendar and plan to attend. Contact the director who is elected to represent your area. Get involved with keeping a locally-owned business viable in your community.

Active members are the people power that keeps an REA going strong.

REA co-ops are owned by their members and governed by a Board of Directors elected from the membership. They rely heavily on member involvement. So we are taking to the newspaper, the radio, and social media to help spread the word. REAs are powerful co-ops with a history of energizing their members.

Your REA wants you to get plugged in to the power of your REA co-op.

How can members “get plugged into” their REAs? A valid contract with your REA makes you a member of the not-for-profit cooperative with a democratic right to vote and run for a volunteer position on the board.

REA boards govern their associations and, as active members in their communities, REAs contribute to the local rural economy.

Whether in a city, town or on a farm, raising a family is a challenge no matter where you call home. When raising a family on a farm, the experience isn’t just challenging; it is also incredibly rewarding. But what makes raising kids on a farm so rewarding, is also what makes it the most challenging. That’s because raising children on a farm means they grow up where we work.

My husband and I are raising our family on a grain farm in western Saskatchewan. Our farm is located in the heart of a small farming community that is thriving because of the passion of our neighbours and friends. Our community works together to keep our local community centre flourishing, we fundraise for and support programs like the children’s playschool, and we never hesitate to help each other through tough times. We are thriving because we work together, building each other up and, in turn, our community.

Raising our children on the farm in this community has many advantages.

They’ll know where our food comes from, as well as how to respect and care for the animals and land entrusted to us. They’ll understand challenges and victories. They’ll cherish their heritage, including their pioneering grandparents and great-grandparents. I want my children to realize that every choice they make will affect everyone else around them.

When we mix our home and work lives,

Lakeland College Alumnus Supports College Farm Expansion

retired from farming, he thought of to give back to Lakeland’s current and Lakeland College, his alma mater. In future students by helping to expand the (Vermilion, Alta.) When Roy Kubica fact, the Class of 1966 alumnus wanted Student-Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland (SMF).

“I have put it in my mind that I am giving away a farm,” says Kubica, who retired from farming with his brother Rick in the Thorhild, Alta., area in 2017.

On March 5, Kubica returned to the Vermilion campus to donate $500,000 to Lakeland College. The funds will be used to increase Lakeland’s land base, which Kubica says is vital for the college to continue its work in expanding agricultural student-led learning opportunities.

“I hope to help these programs where students are able to benefit from handson learning and leadership opportunities,” he says. “Lakeland’s agricultural Photo submitted sciences programming is essential for future generations of farmers and other agricultural professionals. I have the opportunity to help a lot of students and I am proud to do so.”

The generous support of Kubica and other donors made it possible for Lakeland to purchase two adjoining quarters with 309 acres of quality cropland.

We are honoured to have our students continue his legacy at Lakeland,” says Dr. Alice WainwrightStewart, president and CEO of Lakeland College. “By increasing our land base, we won’t have to put the brakes on our students’ innovation. They will have the acres they need to continue to try new things and test different ideas, which we know is an essential element of our award-winning programming.”

ture at Lakeland’s Vermilion campus, he remembers his college experience fondly. “All of the things that we did in class, I was able to use afterwards,” he says. “I learned about livestock, plant science, economics – you had a full day.

I remember the welding shop well too. It all really helped a lot.”

Over the years, Kubica’s connection with Lakeland has only grown stronger.

He stays in touch with fellow alumni by attending Homecoming celebrations in June, as well as alumni socials in Edmonton and Westlock. Kubica is also a longstanding supporter of Lakeland students. He has donated to the Annual Giving Campaign and, since 2013, Kubica has contributed to the college’s student awards program. He established the Roy J. Kubica Agriculture Scholarship in 2015; eight students have received this student award to date.

“I see everything at the college growing and doing well, and I am happy to do my part to help it continue,” says Kubica.

In February, Lakeland finalized the land purchase which was made possible because of donors supporting Leading. Learning. The Lakeland Campaign.

“This purchase was driven by generous donors who recognize the value of our student-managed learning model. They wanted to ensure that our students have access to the land base they need to benefit from the leadership and learning opportunities we provide through our Student-Managed Farm,” says Wainwright-Stewart.

Located six kilometres west of the Vermilion campus and within close proximity to other college land, the new land supports Lakeland’s strategic priorities of commercial agriculture production and ag-based applied research. The purchase also includes a house and outbuildings.

A dedication ceremony will be held in the future to commemorate Kubica and fellow donors who made this land purchase a possibility for Lakeland.

Since Lakeland last grew its land base in 2010, student numbers and crop and livestock applied research have grown substantially. Crop technology and animal science technology enrolment increased from 90 students in 2011 to 266 students in the fall of 2018. With the increase in enrolment, the addition of a livestock applied research herd, and the doubling of Lakeland’s dairy herd because of the new Dairy Learning Centre’s capacity, more of Lakeland’s land base was being used for pasture and feed production. This additional land was needed to appropriately support the crop technology program and the crop unit – Lakeland’s largest SMF unit.

On Tuesday, March 5, which was Shrove Tuesday, students and staff were treated to pancakes and sausages cooked by members of the Knights of Columbus and served by Student Council. Grade 6 students attended a VIBE Day at the end of January and were fortunate to partake in an obstacle course created by Curtis Gorkoff.

That inspired several students to want to set up an obstacle course in our gym for all the VES students to participate in during their fitness Friday classes. Throughout the course, the students got to hop, skip, balance, and pull just to name a few of the activities. Four Grade 6 students volunteered in each period to allow all the grades the chance to experience this amazing opportunity.

On February 27, VES hosted a popcorn sale to raise funds with CIBC to support The United Way. With 239 bags of popcorn sold, we raised $478. Thank you to CIBC for all their work in the fundraiser and for covering all the expenses so that 100% of the proceeds raised would go to The United Way. Thank you to our VES students and

• Influence visitors to do more and extend their length of stay in Alberta by matching their interests and needs to Alberta’s attractions, experiences and destinations.

• Distribute information and essential travel tips.

• Complete administrative tasks such as preparing reports, and collecting and entering visitor statistics and other duties as assigned by Economic Development.

Qualifications: Visitor Information Centre staff must be proactive and able to recall/search Alberta information quickly and be comfortable dealing with people. Having well-honed listening and questioning skills are essential, in order to establish credibility in your interactions with travelers. All candidates must have a high school education. Expertise with internet based research, social media channels and Microsoft Excel and Word is essential.

The Canola Flower Midge: A Newly Discovered Species

In the agricultural lands of Canada, most farmers would think they’ve seen all the pests that they could see. But not so: a new species of midge has recently been identified.

Dr. Boyd Mori, who began his career with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) in Saskatoon in 2016, has been studying swede midge, a common pest that damages Brassicaceae crops like canola, cabbage and broccoli. At one point, he thought the traps were broken, as they weren’t picking up as many swede midges as expected. But they were picking up something else...

“At this point, we’re not sure if it is a native species or whether it has migrated from other areas, like the swede midge did. We’re looking into the life cycle, agronomic impacts, and the existence of natural enemies (beneficial insects).”

species whose fortunes (and population) have increased with the rise of canola acreage in the past 50 years. A lot more research needs to be done to learn about their biology, potential economic impact on crops and if necessary, how to control them.

Contarinia brassicola – also known as the Canola Flower Midge When a new species is identified, it needs a name. Dr. Mori worked with Dr. Brad Sinclair, a Diptera (fly) expert from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, to name it. Factors that go into the naming of the fly include where it was found, the crop it affects, and its physical characteristics. Thus, it was decided that the new midge would be called Contarinia brassicola, or the canola flower midge.

Key discoveries (benefits) Midges are a group of insects that include many kinds of small flies. Many have detrimental effects on agricultural crops. Researchers at AAFC are studying ways to mitigate this damage.

Researchers in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan identified a new species of midge that affects canola.

This new species of midge, named the canola flower midge, will be researched further. At this time, there has been no evidence found of this new midge threatening or causing serious damage to crops but further assessment is required.

Proper Footwear Selection An Important Part Of A Safe Farm

On the farm, there are many everyday tasks that could result in injuries to feet or ankles if the proper footwear is not used. Footwear is a key aspect of injury prevention, which is why it’s impor tant to wear the right type to

ensure your safety. Make sure you’re using footwear that meets specific safety standards by always selecting CSA-approved footwear, which can be identified by a green triangle (usually found on the right foot).

When it comes to tasks that involve heavy lifting, safety footwear with a steel or composite toe should be worn any time there’s a chance of your foot being struck by or pinched between

objects. And in situations where your foot could be injured by an object falling on top of it, use safety footwear with metatarsal guards on the tongue.

For jobs that involve electrical work, select foot wear that has an electrical insulator (dielectric), which will provide resistance against electric shock. To identif y this t ype of footwear, look for an orange Greek letter omega symbol (which resembles an upsidedown horseshoe).

There’s no question that producer s wo r k i n a l l k i n d s of d i f fer e nt conditions. When working in wet or muddy conditions, rubber boots are an obvious choice for keeping feet dr y. It ’s a good idea to clean any mud and debris from your boots at the end of the day in order to maintain grip and avoid tracking debris.

You can also prevent slips and falls on wet, oily, snow- covered, or icy sur faces by wearing footwear with an anti-slip outsole to maintain maximum traction. Keep in mind that while overshoe attachments (like cleats or crampons) might be useful for icy conditions, they can be hazardous to wear on dry, hard surfaces.

When working on uneven surfaces, select footwear with a tall upper and laces all the way to the top of the boot, which will help to support your ankle and prevent injur y from roll-

ing it. If you have torn or damaged foot wear that you think you could g et a c ouple of ex tra months out of, you might want to think again.

Leaky rubber boots don’t just lead to cold, wet feet; they could potentially expose you to chemicals and other hazardous substances. Rather than take any chances, replace damaged footwear as soon as possible.

Because footwear is such an important part of injury prevention on the farm, these requirements should b e l i s te d a s m a n d ato r y p er s o n a l pr ote c t i ve e q u i p m e nt i n t h e s afe work procedures part of your safety management system. Don’t forget to discuss the footwear requirements for specific jobs with workers during orientation. Always assess the conditions and potential hazards that you’ll be working in and select the right type of footwear for the job. Wearing the proper footwear will help ensure your safety, which means less risk of injury and more productive work.

Cold Weather Aftermath And Cattle

February’s frigid temperatures have been taxing for both humans and their livestock across the province.

Barr y Yaremcio, beef and forage specialist at the Alberta Ag-Info Centre, offers feed suggestions for animals that have lost condition or dropped weight due to the cold weather.

“Animals that are kept outside – be they cat tle, bison or horses – they all increase the amount of feed they consume during the cold weather,” explains Yaremcio. “This is to increase the amount of heat that is generated during the digestion process to stay warm. Using beef cattle as an example, if temperatures drop below -20 C, feed intake can increase by 5 to 30 % compared to a warmer day.”

B e c a u s e o f t h e c o l d , Ya r e m c i o says that some producers are noticing that their haystacks or silage pits are emptying a lot faster than what was expected. However, he says that producers have some options even on limited feed supply.

“Cows in late pregnancy can be fed a cer tain amount of straw per day, which is no different than before the cold weather. “ However, the straw cannot be the total increase in feed supplied because it is low in protein, high in fibre which reduces digestibility and rumen efficiency. Good quality hay and additional grain is needed as part of the additional feed supplied.

Adding 2 lb. of grain per head per day at -30 C and 4 lb. of additional grain at -40 C is a good starting point.” “ M a n ag i n g t h e p r o te i n c o n te n t , calcium and phosphorus, magnesium, trace minerals and vitamins are all important to provide a balanced ration.

If hay or silage supplies are very short, feeding roughly 10 lb. of straw per day to a lactating cow with the remainder being silage or hay along with at 10 to 15 lb. – or more – of grain per head per day may be necessary. Grain feeding rates will depend on the quality of the other feeds and forages.”

Yaremcio says that af ter calving when including straw in the diet, it is critical to include sufficient amounts of protein. The ration should contain a minimum of 11 % protein on a dry m at ter b a s i s. Ad d in g fa b a b ean s, peas, distillers grains or 32 % with Rumensin are all possibilities.

“Changing and adjusting the feeding program when including lower quality straw is critical. It is possible that calcium and magnesium levels will be low, creating a concern with downer cows or milk fevers.”

He adds to keep eye on the animal’s body condition score. “ When a cow loses body condition score prior to calving, the energy availabilit y the cow to produce milk after calving is reduced because there is less fat to mobilize off her back in addition to the feed that is providing them with energy.”

“If the cow can’t mobilize the extra fat to get energy to produce milk, peak milk production is going to go down. If you lose two pounds of milk production off the peak at eight weeks after calving, your loss of milk production over the entire length of that lactation period is going to be down that two pounds. It is not just the peak that is lost, but the two pounds all the way

through.”

“If cows are losing weight between calving and when the bulls are turned out, it takes longer for the cows to start cycling and first service conception rates go down,” explains Yaremcio. “Therefore, you are either going to have a bunch of calves born later in the calving season next year, or that cow might be open and gets culled.”

Yaremc io says that bringing the cows back into condition will take a little more attention to details. “Get s o m e ex t r a h e l p wo r k i n g t h r o u g h current rations. Or, use the CowBytes program and readjust them as soon as possible to allow the largest amount of time to regain condition before the breeding season begins. Feeding an

extra two, three or four pounds of grain a day over above what is fed in warmer conditions is a starting point. The extra grain will help increase weight gains by about one - half to three q u ar ter s of a p o u n d a d ay.

That is over and above fetal and placenta growth for cows in late pregnancy and some weight gain for lactating cows.”

Cropping Plan Considerations

A few points for producers to consider before committing acreage to less common crops such as flax, camelina, pulses and hemp. “Every year we have the challenge of finding profitable crops to grow. The first step in crop planning is determining the various costs of production,” says Harry Brook, crop specialist at the Alberta Ag-Info Centre. “By knowing your total production costs, you can determine where the combination of crop

yield and price becomes profitable.”

Brook says it is extremely important to select crops that are profitable and acceptable to both the producer and their banker.

“Why grow something that guarantees a loss? Anyone can make money at $14 per bushel canola, but what about at $10 with a less than average yield? You can’t grow canola all the time. Once the production costs are all known, you can then use them as a tool to find cost savings without foregoing too much yield.”

With any new crop you try, Brook suggests to start small. “Use the first year as a chance to learn the agronomics and particulars of the new crop. When growing a niche or small acreage crop, it is imperative to get a contract first before you grow it. You need to know there is a home for it.”

“When there was significant acreage of borage in 2005, contracts only accounted for a small part of the crop. It took a long time to find a home for the majority of it. With hemp, Health Canada requires paperwork before you can grow it. All harvest seed must be sold to the company you bought your seed from.”

“If production contracts are not available, take that as a sign it may be hard to sell and not be readily marketable. You also need to consider the storability of that crop. Not every crop can be stored in the bin for extended periods, in good condition.”

Pulse crops are valuable to grow for their reduced fertilizer requirements and the additional benefits for following crops as they extract nutrients from the crop residue.

Says Brook, “Peas, lentils, and faba beans all provide a nitrogen benefit and have established markets. However, last year’s trade issues with India have dropped the price of peas and lentils, making those less profitable.”

“Peas are grow throughout the province, but there are issues related to standability. Lentils grow best in the brown and dark brown soil zones. Faba beans will grow well in the black and grey wooded soil zones but they take a long time to mature and should

be seeded early.”

Brook notes that there are two distinct and separate markets for faba beans. “The low tannin faba beans are almost totally marketed to the hog industry as a soybean replacement. There is also a human consumption market for the high tannin varieties of faba beans. Insect pests can be a problem with quality, as sucking insects mark the seed.

Markets are up and down and you need to assure yourself there is profit from growing them.”

Despite planning, certain crops become more profitable due to marketing situations and Brook uses barley as an example. “It did not look very profitable last year at this time, but it now looks to be the most profitable crop some producers grew in 2018. Barley has gained about $.70 per bushel over prices last year.”

Above all, Brook advises caution.

“Become informed on issues related to any new crop - both for growing and marketing. Talk to people who already produce it.

Crunch the numbers on anticipated costs and returns to make sure the experiment does not end up costing too much. Learn from other’s mistakes, and try not to make your own.”

“By taking care of the details when planning cropping changes, you can do everything you can to make ensure a profitable outcome, and not just a bill for the education.”

Tradition Lives Here - 100th Annual Pride of the Prairies Bull Show

Submitted LLOYDMINSTER, SK/AB, March 3, 2019 – For the 100th year, the Lloydminster Exhibition hosted the Pride of the Prairies Bull Show sponsored by RBC Royal Bank of Canada & Canadian Natural Resources Limited. This year we have 141 bulls on offer. Consignors had the option to show their bulls either in the traditional halter show or in pens of one, two, or three. The pen show option continues to gain popularity as consignors are looking for an alternative way to showcase their cattle. The show judge was Kurt & Matthew Trefiak . This year to honor our 100th Annual Show & Sale we concluded Sunday evening with our traditional Steak Fry but before we dined in a very rustic setting we had a short program where we

heard from MLA Jessica Littlewood, City of Lloydminster Mayor Gerald Aalbers as well as Bull Sale committee member Owen Noble. We were excited to surprise and honor two long standing area families for their dedication and support the past 40+ years. These families were Wayne & Lucie Sampson from Thunderbird Ranch as well as Greenwood – and patriarch Bernie Payne with his family by his side. These families were presented with a plaque and were given a chance to address the crowd. We finished up the program with a slideshow documenting memories from the past 10 0years and cake cutting. Close to 175 people stayed to enjoy a delicious steak after a successful day of showing.

Progress Steer & Heifer Junior Show For an Eighth year, the Lloydminster Exhibition hosted the Progress Steer and Heifer Junior Show sponsored by Justamere. This year there was 39 heifers and 33 steers participate in the show!

The junior portion continues to be a very impressive and competitive show.

It was also the Eight Annual GMack Progress Steer and Heifer Open Show, supported by GMACK & Weaver Order Buying., where 49 heifers and 31 steers were entered! We had exhibitors from across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

A p p l i c a t i o n s f o r t h e 2 0 19 - 2 0 term of the BCRC Beef Researcher Mentorship Program are now being accepted.

The deadline to apply is May 1, 2019.

Four researchers were selected to participate in the program this past y e a r. E a c h w a s p a i r e d w i t h t w o mentors – an innovative producer and another industry expert – for a one year term (ending July 31, 2019). Each of the researchers have reported very successful and valuable experiences through the opportunities provided, including: Establishing par tnerships with industr y and other researchers to further their research programs M eeting several pro du c er s and i n d u s t r y l e ad e r s w i t h w h o m t h ey ask questions and have meaning ful discussions about cattle production, beef quality and safety, and the

Canadian beef value chain At t e n d i n g i n d u s t r y eve n t s a n d touring farms and ranches to better understand the impacts, practicalities and economics of adopting research results The BCRC is excited to continue the program and invite applications from upcoming and new applied researchers in Canada whose studies are of value to the beef industry, such as cat tle health and welfare, beef quality, food safety, genetics, feed ef ficiency, or forages. A new group of participants will begin their mentorships on August 1st.

The Beef Researcher Mentorship Program launched in August 2014 to facilitate greater engagement of upcoming and new applied researchers with Canada’s beef industry.
