United We Roll - Enroute To Parliament Hill

The western portion of the ‘United We Roll’ convoy departed Red Deer on February 14, enroute to Ottawa and are expected to arrive at Parliament Hill on February 19.

People from all across the country have teamed up in the official convoy for Canada, and members from eastern Canada will meet them in Ottawa. Veterans will lead members of the group up Parliament Hill, and several speakers will give an address.

Wade Woywitka, from Vermilion participated in the convoy and said, “The purpose of the convoy was to open people’s eyes to the fact that our oil cannot get to market because of Trudeau’s government. They bought the Trans Mountain Pipeline and are not building the expansion. It was already approved by previous government; all they had to do was let it be built.

It all has to do with the United Nations’ sustainable energy agreement, and wanting everyone to go green. The new carbon tax and new bills are killing everybody in

this province.”

Woywitka has worked on the family farm and now in the oil patch. He finds that these issues have affected him in both ways. His fellow coworkers in the oil industry have taken massive pay cuts in the past few years, and he said that as a result, restaurants and small businesses are hurting due to the state of the energy sector and their carbon taxes or carbon pricing. He also noted the money farmers are losing every year due to carbon pricing and tax, as well as Bill C-48 (antitanker legislation) and Bill C-69 (no more energy expansion bill).

“This whole thing is going to affect my children and grandchildren. I was giving up on my country and if I had sat back and done nothing, I wouldn’t have been able to look in the mirror knowing that there would be nothing left of it for my children and grandchildren. If we don’t act now, it may be too late to save our country, our energy sector, and our farmers,” said Woywitka.

Toma New Location – Now Open

Toma Fine Floors and Shelly’s Window Coverings Ltd. moved to their new location at 5114 - 50 Avenue in Vermilion on February 1.

The team have enjoyed their new location that offers more space to provide a welcoming atmosphere. “We spent five and a half months from breaking soil to opening our doors. Our goal is still to offer flooring, ceramic tile, kitchen cabinets, window coverings, and design services. We support residential and commercial projects including renovations and new builds big or small; looking at every project with the same quality and service. We will be celebrating five years of business together in Vermilion in July,� said working partner Shelly Corbiere.

Having outgrown their previous space, they weren’t able to showcase all of their

products and can now offer Vermilion and area more selection. Shelly noted that most people are visual, so they appreciate being able to see and touch the samples or take them home to test them in their space. “It’s overwhelming for some people to plan a renovation or build and by offering design services, we can take the stress off much of the decision making process for clients. We have installation services for all of our products, and offer free estimates and competitive pricing.

People want a fresh look. It can be due to allergies, maintenance, or changing portions of their space to feel new again.

These changes can help them feel better, be energy saving, or increase value,� said Shelly.

Throughout the years, Toma Fine Floors and Shelly’s Window Coverings Ltd have been supporting youth and events in Vermilion and surrounding communities through

donations to agricultural societies, hockey, 4-H, etc. “It is important to do that in every community. I would like to thank Vermilion and area residents for having such a high percentage of people who continue to shop locally,� said working partner Nick Toma.

Nick has been in the industry for 45 years, including work in installation, distribution, and manufacturing, and his dream had

always been to open his own retail outlet. “I like having customers become friends,� said Nick. “I love being a part of making a difference with a clients project from start to finish; seeing a client’s dream become a reality.

We will be continually changing as we set up more displays. We would like to invite people to stop in, and we look forward to helping them,� said Shelly.

Treats For Treatment

Lakeland College students will be hosting a Treats For Treatment fundraiser from March 8 - March 29 in order to fund a treatment bed at Thorpe Recovery Centre (TRC).

Rebecca Watling from Wainwright, and a Child and Youth Care student at Lakeland College in Vermilion, spent time working at Thorpe in the past. “ We were lucky to have Rebecca work with us, and while she was here she discovered the desperate need for funding and has decided to do her part and raise money to fund our detox program. A huge thank you to both Rebecca and Lakeland College for the opportunity these students have to raise awareness in our communities,” said Tricia Hunter, Thorpe Recove r y C e n t r e D eve l o p m e n t O f f i c e r.

As part of their Leadership course, she will work with fellow student, Shaylyn McDougall (from Paradise Valley) through the fundraiser, and will have several pre-made dinners as well as frozen baked goods available. They have collaborated with Custom Bakery in Wainwright for the fundraiser., and 15 per cent of their sales will go towards TRC. E-transfer, cheque or cash will be accepted for payment, and the site will automatically mail out a tax receipt.

“Addiction. Often, when we hear that word, our thoughts turn negative. We tend to forget that those suffering with addiction are part of a family, part of a friend group, part of a community. Addiction has touched, or will touch, every single one of us. Addiction frightens us.

As students of a Human Services Program at Lakeland College, we were given the task of formulating and implementing a program that would better our community.

In 2018 2,300 phone calls were documented to the Thorpe Recovery Centre.

Only 411 of those desperate phone calls were able to be admitted to the Centre due to a lack of funded beds.

Out of the eight detox beds, only two are funded by Alberta and two are funded

by Saskatchewan. Sadly, bet ween 2016 and 2018, there were 1,405 opioid deaths recorded in Alberta. That’s 702 people a year – our people. 702 children. 702 parents. 702 friends. The need for funding is critical. These numbers are shocking; they are frightening.

We have decided that our purpose for this project is to raise awareness about addiction as well as fundraise in hopes of raising enough money to fund a detox treatment bed. Some of those rejected phone calls I spoke of earlier have been the difference between life and death. After personally working at the Thorpe Recovery Centre, I was able to witness first-hand the heartbreaking epidemic. There were days when I left work and cried during my drive home

(as did several other employees). Every single human being deserves the right to treatment and it’s unfair that they cannot access it due to a lack of funding.

Let’s end the stigma. Start talking. Let’s open the door to communication – it’s okay to speak about addiction. Let’s help, instead of punishing or shunning those who are stuck in the cycle of addiction.

It’s been cold for a long time, which typically causes a craving for warm and comforting food filled with carbs. In spite of that tendency, we still need to eat fresh vegetables. If fact I have been craving salads.

Here is an easy salad to make that uses basic ingredients, but is a little more filling than a lettuce salad. The salad is made with the ingredients chopped into approximately 1/4 inch cubes. To do this quickly and easily, I cut a grid into the cucumber, onion, and tomato and then slice it, that way it falls diced onto the cutting board with each slice. This salad can be served as a side, and it can be used to fill a pita.

of the Middle East, where in Hebrew it is simply referred to as a chopped salad or a vegetable salad. It is served with breakfast, dinner and supper. This is actually a popular salad all through the Mediterranean. There are variations that add one of the following: chopped mint , dill, oregano, basil, sage or omit the red pepper.

Eating this salad is a great way to add several servings of vegetables as well as many vitamins, micro nutrients and antioxidants. Raw vegetables have natural enzymes. Enzymes are catalysts to the many chemical reactions that take place in the body that give us vitality. Alive active enzymes in our food boost our metabolism and our health.

Both cucumbers and onions contain the nutrient quercetin, which is a natural anti-histamine which may provide relief to allergy suffers. Cucumbers also contain

Parsley contains twice as much iron as spinach, and significant folate. Olive oil is a healthy mono-saturated fat, that helps your body absorb more of the nutrients from the vegetables, so don’t skimp on the oil thinking your salad will be healthier, because science says it won’t be.

The lemon and lime contain unique antioxidants, micronutrients and are a good source of vitamin C. As you can see this salad is a power house of goodness, and it is a well needed boost of energy during this prolonged cold weather. I hope you love it as much as I do.

Jerusalem ( Israeli) Salad 3 roma tomatoes 1 English cucumber, half peeled1 red pepper 1/2 cup chopped red onion 1/2 cup chopped parsley 3 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons lemon or lime juice freshly squeezed 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper Chop the cucumber, tomato, onion and red pepper into approximately 1/’ pieces. (read above for a easy trick to do this).

Chop the parsley finely, lightly toss the ingredients together, and then drizzle with the olive oil first, then the lemon or lime juice and then the salt and pepper. Toss to coat and serve fresh. It does store well in the refrigerator, but they is a softening of the cucumber.

Valley Lodge Valentine’s Day Tea

Family and friends enjoyed visiting the Vermilion Valley Lodge as they hosted their annual Valentine’s Day Tea on February 14.

The fundraiser was held to help support monthly birthday parties for residents, as well as flowers for the flower beds, special event costs, bus trips, and Christmas gifts.

Several raffle draw items were donated by residents, family members, staff, and members of the community. Guests enjoyed sharing an afternoon tea accompanied with strawberry shortcake, and visiting with residents and one another.

“This is our only recreation fundraiser for the year and it allows our department to do so much more throughout the year. Everyone enjoyed themselves, and it was wonderful to see the community coming together to enrich the lives of our seniors,” said supportive housing recreation director, Brittany Lysons.

Make A Difference With Good Crop Rotation

One of the best tools to improve the bottom line, reduce future grief, and lower the risks of pests, disease and weeds is by using a diverse crop rotation.

“A good crop rotation is one where there is an adequate variety of crops grown so that any one type of crop is grown only once every three or four years,” says Harry Brook, crop specialist at the Alberta Ag-Info Centre. “A rotation like this can reduce pest costs, prolong the usefulness of pest control products, and improve the bottom line. Limiting or shortening the rotation may provide short-term financial benefits but in the long-term, could severely limit future cropping options.”

One example that Brook uses is clubroot.

“It converts the canola root into a massive spore factory. It is only spread in infected soils, but each year we see it in more Alberta fields. Once you have clubroot, it is there for the long haul. These soil borne spores can remain viable in the soil for up to 20 years.

If you have it, many counties will require the land be put on a four or five-year canolafree crop rotation. However, resistance in a crop is not helped when the crop rotation is just wheat followed by canola.”

A variety of crop types can add to the health of the soil. “Pulses in a rotation improves soil health and reduces fertilizer costs,” adds Brook. “Peas, lentils and faba beans all capture nitrogen from the air and encourage beneficial bacteria and fungi that can benefit following crops. There is a nitrogen benefit left in the soil that extends up to three years after the pulse crop.”

“Permanent forages in the crop rotation provide even more benefits,” Brook mentions. “They reduce the weed seeds present in the soil, increase organic matter, and are an excellent break for crop diseases and insect pests. Also, a varied crop rotation can help diversify a farm operation, reducing financial risk. It also spreads out machinery use, making them more efficient.”

Moisture use efficiency also improves

with a varied crop rotation. “Canola, wheat, and peas all root to different depths and extract moisture from different parts of the soil. A planned crop rotation can utilize soil moisture more efficiently. Permanent forages in rotation can also address soil problem such as soil salinity or acidity.

Seeded in a field for three to five years, they are an excellent break from annual crops and add to the soil organic matter, which is your soil nutrient bank account. They can even reclaim some soils from salinity, over time.”

“A diverse crop rotation also naturally varies the pesticides used and reduces the chance of resistance developing to pest control products,” adds Brook. “Conversely, a tight rotation can quickly develop weed, insect or disease problems, requiring greater expense to control the issue. In the case of clubroot of canola, the only answer is resistant varieties, and that tolerance has already broken down.”

Livestock Producers Receive Tax Relief For 2018

The Government of Canada has released the final list of designated regions where livestock tax deferral has been authorized for 2018 due to drought conditions in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick.

On September 14, 2018, the Governm ent ann oun c e d t he init ial li st of prescribed regions in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Quebec eligible for livestock tax deferral. A second designation of eligible regions was made on October 31, 2018.

Ongoing analysis of drought conditions has indicated the need to expand the list of designated regions for 2018, with new regions identified for Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario.

The livestock tax deferral provision allows producers in prescribed drought or excess moisture regions to defer a portion of their 2018 sale proceeds of breeding livestock until 2019 to help replenish the herd. The cost of replacing the animals in 2019 will offset the deferred income, thereby reducing the

tax burden associated with the original sale.

Eligibility for the tax deferral is limited to those producers located inside the prescribed areas. Producers in those regions can request the ta x deferral when filing their 2018 income tax returns.

Tax Credit Rate For Alberta Canola Producers

Canola growers in Alberta who do not request a refund of their check off from the Alber ta Canola Producers Commission qualify for a tax credit for the 2018 tax year.

The Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) ta x credit allows canola growers to claim the tax credit for that portion of the

check off paid that was used to fund qualifying research.

“The tax credit is an additional benefit for growers who pay check-off on crops like canola,” says John Guelly a farmer from Westlock, Alberta and the Chair of Alberta Canola’s research c o m m i t te e. “ Fa r m e r s a r e f u n d i n g research into finding solutions to agronomic issues like clubroot, while being able to capture some of that invest-

New USDA Beef Lifecycle Assessment Finds Environmental Impacts Lower Than Perceived

California Beef Council Submitted

New study challenges widely reported assumptions about beef and carbon emissions DENVER, Colo., Jan. 16, 2019 – A new study, recently published in the journal Agricultural Systems, is the most comprehensive beef cattle lifecycle assessment ever completed.

In the repor t, titled Environmental Footprints of Beef Cattle Production in the United States,[1] the researchers found widely accepted measures related to beef cattle’s impact in the U.S. are often overestimated.

The comprehensive lifecycle assessment, conducted by the USDA’s Agricultural Research Ser vice and The Beef Chec kof f, was designed to scientifically quantify the sustainability of U.S. beef production. This was accomplished by collecting and examining feed and cattle productionrelated data from more than 2,200 cat tle producers in seven regional production areas. Conclusions were derived using a simulation model and the regional production data to estimate national impacts in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, fossil energy use, blue water consumption and reactive nitrogen loss.

Notable study findings include: Greenhouse gas emissions: Beef production, including the production of animal feed, is responsible for only 3.3 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. This is dramatically lower than the often-misapplied global livestock figure of 14.5 percent[2].

Fu r t h e r m o r e, t h r o u g h c o n t i n u o u s improvements in production practices, U.S. beef farmers and ranchers have avoided 2.3 gigatons of carbon emissions since 1975[3].

G r a i n f e e d c o n s u m p t i o n: Pe r pound of beef carcass weight, cattle only consume 2.6 pounds of grain.

This is comparable to feed conversion ef ficiencies of pork and poultry. Additionally, nearly 90 percent of grain-finished cattle feed is inedible to humans, meaning these plants can only provide value to humans when they’re upcycled by cattle into highquality protein.

C o rn f e e d c o nsu m p t i o n: C or n used to feed beef cattle only repres e nt s a p p r ox i m ate l y 9 p e r c e nt of har vested corn grain in the U.S., or 8 million acres. By comparison, 37.5 percent of corn acreage in the U.S. is used for producing fuel ethanol[4].

Water use: On average, it takes 308 gallons of water to produce a pound of boneless beef. Previous repor ts have estimated upwards of 24,0 0 0 gallons[5]. Additionally, water use by beef is only around 5 percent of U.S. water withdrawals, and this water is recycled.

“This lifecycle assessment delivers the most comprehensive and accurate assessment of the environmental impact of beef cattle in the U.S. to date,” said USDA researcher and study co-author Alan Rotz.

The study assessed cattle production in the farm and ranch portion of the beef supply chain, including emissions associated with energy, feed, machinery, seed, pesticide and other resources used in production. Related work is in-progress to assess production fur ther down the supply chain, including processing, packing, distribution, retail, consumption and waste han d ling. To g et her, t hese re p or t s will comprise the most detailed and

comprehensive assessment of U.S. beef’s sustainability to-date.

“This work produces baseline data the cattle industry can use to continue to im prove the environmental and economic sustainability of U.S. beef,” said Sara Place, Ph.D., study co-author and Senior Director of Sustainable B e e f Pr o d u c t i o n R e s e a r c h at t h e National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, a contractor to the Beef Checkoff.

“Investments in this type of research demonstrate a continuous commitment to environmental stewardship by America’s farmers and ranchers.”

February 14 was a very busy and active day at St. Jerome’s. We celebrated 100th Day and Valentine’s Day. Students looked amazing on Thursday as they dressed in their finest for Formal Day. Suits and ties, gorgeous dresses and wonderful hair styles were seen from our fantastic grade twelve students all the way down to the kindergarten students. Grade one students spent the morning focusing on the number “100”, Reading stories about the 100th Day of School, counting 100 balloons, and doing many more 100 activities. In the afternoon elementary students had Valentine Parties in their classrooms sharing Valentine Cards and treats. The Middle Level students had a Valentine Dance and shared treats in the afternoon. High School and Middle Level students bought a “CRUSH” pop to be delivered to their “Crush” on Valentine’s Day. St. Jerome’s were treated to a fabulous two days of music, activity, and prayer on Tuesday and Wednesday. The mission group, PureWitness, joined our students sharing their Catholic Faith through videos,

the combinations for various locks. It’s a wonderful way to introduce material in a way that encourages collaboration, critical thinking, and ingenuity. A special thanks to Mr. Zorniak for building us some lock boxes.

The Annual St. Jerome’s Leadership Carnival is just around the corner. This year’s Carnival will be held on Thursday, February 28 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm in the school gym and gathering area. The class is already preparing for the carnival and are looking for prizes for the Jr. and Sr. Hoopla and Fish Pond. If you have any clean, gently used toys, stuffies, puzzles, jewellery, etc. please drop them off at the school office or contact the school. They are also accepting donations of non-perishable food items. Thank you for your generosity!

The Leadership students will also be looking for Silent Auction items for the evening.

Our Sr. Girls Basketball team had a great weekend February 8 and 9 participating in the Jr. R. Robson’s Snowball Basketball Tournament. Loads of laughs, great play, encouragement and teamwork took them to a 1st place finish on the consolation side of the tournament. Thank you to Mr. Wheat and Mr. Collins for supporting and coaching this great group of athletes.

How To Increase Your Odds Of Having Healthy Calves

Calving is a natural process, but sometimes disease, weather, and many other factors can cause stress. How can beef producers best prepare newborn calves to get a healthy start? What are some effective ways to enable calves to be resilient against bugs like bacteria, viruses or other pathogens they will encounter? How can farmers and ranchers manage disease if and when it strikes?

“Having healthy calves takes planning,” said Dr. Claire Windeyer, Assistant Professor in Cattle Health at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Program. Windeyer shared a number of useful ideas during two previous webinars, Management During Calving Season for Healthier, More Productive Calves and Managing Young Calves to Prevent Disease. Many practices can be implemented on-farm immediately and there are links below to particular segments of the video.

Prevent problems before they start by managing herds appropriately: Calve cows on fresh ground where they haven’t already wintered.

Calve heifers separately – calving management webinar recording).Heifers have a greater risk of calving difficulties, mismothering, and colostrum issues than cows, so segregating first-time mothers will expose their calves to fewer pathogens and facilitate better supervision.

Provide shelter, bedding and windbreaks, and move feeding areas often when possible.

Have a game plan for when things go wrong and intervention is required during calving difficulties.

After pulling a calf, resuscitate calves by briskly poking a straw in their nose, rubbing them vigorously or even dribbling a bit of cold water in their ear.

Adequate colostrum consumption is essential for the health and survival of calves.

Monitor the calf to ensure it suckled within 4-6 hours of birthCalves should get at least 1 litre of good quality colostrum within this time.

Assess a calf’s suckle reflex by sticking your finger in the calf’s mouth. Calves born via difficult deliveries or with poor suckle reflex are more likely to fail to consume colostrum. Talk to your vet about appropriate colostrum supplementation.

When supplementing, bottle-feeding is preferred over tube feeding. If tube feeding is necessary, ensure the tube used for supplementation isn’t the same tube used to administer liquids to sick calves.

When dealing with sick calves, identify symptoms and disease triggers. There are several major calfhood diseases to monitor for: or neonatal calf diarrhea, causes dehydration and often affects numerous calves in the herd. “Septicemia is an underappreciated cause of disease and death in calves,” Windeyer remarked. The disease has a quick onset and affected calves may be depressed, dull, have a fever, loss of appetite, or other symptoms.

Calves fighting may have difficulty breathing, demonstrate coughing, nasal or eye discharge, have decreased appetite or rough hair coat. Pneumonia can strike very young calves and is also common in calves 90-150 days of age (i.e. “summer pneumonia”).

For producers who have had respiratory issues, consider intranasal vaccines for young calves.

Talk to your vet about the potential for pain medication when treating calf diseases.
