The 23rd Annual Ron Moses Communit y Christmas Dinner was held at the Vermilion Senior Centre on December 25. Co-founder, Lynda Moses, along with a long list of volunteers helped prepare meals for 120 people in the hall as well as deliver 68 meals to Innisfree, Minburn, Mannville, Islay, and Vermilion. The 188 people in total were able to enjoy their choice of turkey, ham, meatballs, and bison; as well as plenty of sides including cabbage rolls, perogies, four salads, and dessert. “ Ever yo ne ju st l ove d t he b i so n. them? That is up to you and the situation. On a continuum there are people that are mature enough to be able to work out their differences and respect each other. Other people find even the slightest dif ferences unacceptable; they are not capable of working anything out and may forever continue on in a rude and snubbing fashion. But thirdly, it is impossible to work anything out with an arrogant person that does not care about anyone and believes that they are seldom wrong. Recognize what you are dealing with, forgive and move on and find better people. My dad advised me in such situations, to “let it be like water off a ducks back”. The ideal place to be is in not allowing ourselves to be offended, especially by people that don’t know any better, or that do, but instead choose to act like they don’t. Sometimes we can’t fix stupid, but we can choose not to be drawn into it. As long as we stay unforgiving, we are emotionally tied to that person, unable to heal and personally I don’t even like being around those types of people, so I sure don’t want to be tied to them. Forgiveness of self and others makes us truly free, and our health, heart and our sprit benefit. Ukrainian Settlers Arrive In The Area

B e t w e e n 18 9 8 an d 1910, the Uk r a i n i a n p e o p l e made their way to Alberta in huge numbers, set tling in vast areas along what is now Highway 16. From Bruderheim to Vermilion and from Radway to St. Paul, Ukrainians called the area home, shaped it and made it what it is today. Originally when they arrived, they were not called Ukrainians but Austrians as they came from that area of Europe. Later, they would be called Ruthenians, which was the name given to them by the Germans in Austria. It was only after the First World War that the Ukrainian name rose in use among the settlers. When they first arrived, the Ukrainian settlers had little in the way of funds, but they worked hard and made money wherever they could. Many took jobs on farms with older settlers that paid $10 to $15 per month, or 15 cents to 20 cents an hour in town. For the railway, they could make $1.25 per 10-hour day.
The settlers would earn whatever t hey c oul d in t he sum m er m o nt hs and then invest that money directly into cows, horses and anything that may need to be needed on the farm. Through the summer, the Ukrainian settlers would also clear their land, breaking between five and 10 acres each summer. This allowed them to increase their cultivated land a little bit each year. As the years passed, the Ukrainians were able to clear hundreds of acres of crops. Practicing mixed farming practices, the settlers were able to grow their wealth and by more land around them. The Ukrainian settlers were able to prosper in the area thanks to their d esire to help eac h other through d eve l o p i n g far m s, b u t a l s o i n t h e competition with each other to have better stock, crops and machiner y. This c o o peratio n an d c o m petitio n were a driving factor in their success in the area. The immense impact the Ukrainians were having on the area was evident in 1913 wh en t he A l b er t a g over n ment created the English School for Foreigners, which allowed Ukrainian
boys who had a high school education in the old country, to train in English and prepare for Alber ta schooling. Within four years, there were a total of 30 teachers of Ukrainian descent teaching in country schools in the area and around the province. Suggestions for columns or ques-

The influenza season is in full swing and is far from over. Vermilion-Mannville United Church Mission Project 2018
Submitted The Vermilion-Mannville Pastoral Charge of the United Church of Canada is happy to have done a very successful Mission Project for 2018. In the beginning of 2018 this Pastoral Charge made up of three congregations: First United Vermilion, McQueen United in Mannville, and Innisfree United agreed to raise money to buy desks for a primary school in Kenya where their minister Rev. Andrew Kinoti Lairenge comes from. By the end of September, they had raised $13,260. This money was raised outside the Pastoral Charge’s regular budget. Christians gave willingly and freely towards this project. When the word spread around even people who were not members of the United Church gave generously. The Vermilion Ministerial gave
their contribution from the offerings of the Vermilion Fair joint service and the McDonald Family Foods sponsored a barbeque. In Mannville the members of the community attended a spaghetti dinner organized by the church at the Mannville Elks Hall. It was a great delight to have the support of the community In October, Rev. Andrew and his family went for their vacation in Kenya and made sure that the money raised was properly used. Ntalami Primary School, where Andrew was a student, now, has new desks and chairs for all the pupils and teachers and a new permanent classroom. On top of this there was a little money left. To make sure that it went into good and lasting use, this money was used to cement the floor of one more classroom
in the neighbouring school where Sarah, Rev. Andrew’s wife went to school. The Pastoral charge, Rev. Andrew and his wife Sarah wish to thank all who supported our 2018 Mission Project. To celebrate this there will be a presenta-
tion and potluck dinner at the First United Church Hall on Friday, January 11, 2019 at 6 p.m.. In Mannville, there will be a spaghetti dinner at the Elks Hall on Tuesday January 22 at 5 p.m.. All are welcome. Happy New Year!

T h e c o n fe r e n c e c o m m i t te e a n d key stakeholders will be hosting the 3rd Annual Work-Stress-Life: Striking A Balance Conference and Wellness Fair on January 29, from 8:15 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at the Vermilion Regional Centre. This conference will address ways to improve one’s mental health so that they feel more in control of their lives, are better able to cope with stress, and are a part of their community. Recognized worldwide, Kevin Hines will share his stor y, Cracked Not Broken. As one of only 36 jumpers to survive the fall from the Golden Gate Bridge (less than one per cent), he will spread the message of living mentally healthy by sharing his powerful insight. Michelle Cederberg has been inspiring people across North America, and aims to empower people through her speech, The Success-Energy Equation (What it Really Takes to Win at Work and Still Have a Life). Derek C o llins will s p eak o n t he body’s response to trauma and share strategies that can help in different settings. The Kalyna Country Primary Care Network will share how people can create happiness daily.

We are beginning a new year with all that it holds for us. We have hopes and expectations, some we will enjoy but some will find that the new year will be bearing the pain of losses. I t t a ke s c o u r a g e t o g r i eve a n d emotional energy. Following are a few things to consider on your “journey through Grief ” and as you begin the “new normal” of life.(lovingly lifted from Courage To Grieve by Judy Tatelbaum) • Be able to cope with feelings and environment, and face our loss at our very gut level not just our head. (going through our grief) • When emotional pain lessens, it does not mean we are forgetting our loved one or our loss.(It is like they

There is a lot of attention paid to happiness. Yo u m ay h ave s e e n information or courses on pursuing happiness, choosing happiness, or building happiness for yourself. Have you ever spent any time thinking or reading about discomfort? Interestingly, some wonderful results can also be had by choosing to sit with emotional discomfort. Many people classify emotions as being either positive or negative. Regardless, we are actually designed to experience all of them at one time or another and each of them have a purpose. In order to avoid the uncomfortable emotions, we have developed coping mechanisms to avoid, ignore, dismiss, numb or self-medicate feelings of discomfort rather than being more curious about those feelings and why we might be having them. Examples
are woven into the tapestry of our lives) • Waves of grief will still cover us but it will not be as intense or cause such a deep reaction.(drowning) • See when looking ahead, that life can be worthwhile after looking back at your survival through the, rough and the darkest hours. • Remember that we will grieve other losses as grief comes with loss. • E n e r g y a n d s e l f – e s t e e m a r e depleted – Being able to start releasing guilt, shame, blame, and resentments allows healing to begin more quickly. • Having the willingness to reconcile to the new life, letting go of the pain gently and be willing to heal. If we are resisting, what are we holding on
to? • There will be renewal and reinvestment, (honour ing the memor y). “Spring does not refuse to come because it was preceded by winter.” • Believing that one will never reconcile or have a new beginning after grieving. Examine the belief about recover y (reconciliation). These beliefs can be self fulfilling. • Examine what you believe. Does the belief or habit make sense now? Revisit the beliefs. Then decide, do I need to change my belief? Walking Through Grief Society will be offering programming for those who are grieving. In 2019 supports offered include; weekly support group for those who experience life losses , monthly support group for those who have lost

include drug and alcohol use, binge TV watching, over-eating, video gaming, and even self-harm. These offer some people short term relief but can be harmful to their emotional and physical wellbeing in the long term. Blame is another outlet for difficult emotion which can make it difficult for the person blaming to maintain relationships. So why might you want to consider sitting with discomfort? We are designed to experience and handle a wide array of emotions. Without experiencing the more uncomfortable ones, it is harder to appreciate or even differentiate between different emotions. Fully experiencing a difficult emotion can even help us to build our resilience and to become more self-aware. Sitting with emotional discomfort can also give us better insight into what emotion we are really experiencing. Taking some time before responding to that emotion, can also give you a window of time to calm

Psychologist Kelly McGonigal in her popular Ted Talk, “How to Make Stress Your Friend” concludes that, “chasing meaning is better for your health than trying to avoid discomfort.” Finally, people often report creativity and innovation being born out of periods of difficulty. Mindfulness practice can be a wonderful way to sit with discomfort. The next time younotice a difficult feeling emerging, consider taking a few quiet moments to just observe the emotion. Try to put a name to it and be specific. Notice the physical sensations in your body. Although it may be difficult, try not to judge yourself for having it. Remind yourself that you are equipped for this and that you can handle it. Don’t attach too much importance to the feeling, just observe what is happening. You will likely also notice that it will eventually pass or at least lessen. It may surprise
through suicide, individual support for those who experience loss through death, end of life, health, homicide, suicide, or relationship loss. We will continue offering Hope After Loss - grief support for children. Twice a school year for 10 week sessions and Changing Families - grief support for children impacted by separation and divorce. As you enter this, new year may you face the pain of your grief with healing, new focus, skills and the Courage To Grieve well. Lakeland College Signs MOA With Onion Lake Social Development Lakeland College Submitted
(Lloydminster, Alta.) – Lakeland College and Onion Lake Social Development (OLSD) are increasing employability and educational opportunities for social assistance individuals under a new Memorandum of Agreement (MOA). Lakeland will deliver a 21-week program, Digital Literacy for Employment, for 12 OLSD income assistance (IA) clients starting Jan. 7, 2019. The program is designed to build foundational technology and digital skills. “Lakeland College recognizes the important role it has in providing educational opportunities for underrepresented communities and we are pleased to partner with OLSD. We think this program will serve the students well,” says Michael Crowe, Lakeland College vice president, academic and research. OLSD recognized a need for their clients to strengthen their understanding of technology. Vivian Chief, OLSD social assistance employment training caseworker, says the organization is excited to offer this program
with Lakeland. “This digital literacy program will get our clients job ready. They will learn to communicate information on many digital platforms, and gain confidence to find work or transition to other Lakeland programs,” Chief says. OLSD Director Glenda Littlewolfe added, “Together, we’re providing our clients with a key to open the door, to find future employment opportunities. We have about 900 clients and a many have never left home. With Lakeland’s support we can work together to build their confidence, introduce them to new experiences and give them the tools to experience success.” Program delivery will rotate between Onion Lake Cree Nation and Lakeland College Lloydminster campus, with transportation to and from Onion Lake by OLSD. OLSD will use the funding they received from Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada to support the program, says Littlewolfe. Students learn on devices such as computers, cell phones and tablets, and have access to the resources they require to build on their skills.

This is the first time OLSD collaborated with Lakeland to bring programming to their clients. The organization has plans to continue working with Lakeland to expand its programming into the heavy oil and gas sector, as well as others. About Onion Lake Social Development OLSD supports members of the Onion
Lake Cree Nation facing tough times and hardships. OLSD helps and guides clients to learn the basic skills and training to find employment, and offers tickets into trades. OLSD programming includes basic life skills, basic computer skills, beginner aesthetics, G.E.D. prep, resume writing, budgeting and more.
