The Wainwright Dance Academy hosted two performances of their 5th Annual Nutcracker Ballet at the Alumni Theatre in Vermilion on December 8.

Da n c er s fr o m S H APE S tu d i o i n Vermilion participated once again, and together the dancers made the traditional Christmas story come to life.

Sparkling smiles filled the stage, and the audience was dazzled by ornate costumes and the dancers’ ability to incorporate several props as they made the journey to the enchanted kingdom. “ The girls did a really good job.

Their passion for telling the story came through in their performance. My little Clara brought the role to life and you

could tell she was doing what she loves to do,” said artistic director and choreographer, Sandy Sundborg.

Approximately 50 dancer s filled the stage. Sundborg noted that some gentlemen who have never danced before did a fabulous job. She was also thankful that a couple of her graduates came back to help this year, as well as to the parent volunteers and dancers for their hard work. Her son, Zak Pinel, came back from Ontario to assist and has been involved for over 20 years; since he was three years old.

Overall, the audience couldn’t help but be drawn into the story. Their love of dance, and Christmas cheer was renewed by watching the incredible Clara meets the Sugar Plum Fairy during the performance. See more photos on page 2. performances.

Canadian Mounted Shooting Finals

The Canadian Mounted Shooting Finals were held in Red Deer in October.

Four members of the Vermilion-Lloydminster Border Cowboy Mounted Shooters attended and had a very good showing at the Canadian Finals.

Lesley Farkash won the Ladies 2 Division, and Jean MacMillan won the Senior Ladies 3 Division. Duncan MacMillan won the Senior Men’s 4 Division, and in addition he won Canada’s season leader overall (winning the overall pistol, overall shotgun, and overall rifle).

“It’s kind of unheard of. I had a tremendous, banner year; the season of my life; everything just seemed to go right,” said Duncan MacMillan.

He went on to say that Vermilion can be proud of Holly Schuk as a main organizer of the Mounted Shooters of Canada. I would like to congratulate Lesley and Jean

for doing so well, and Holly who qualified to compete as well for her outstanding management skills throughout the entire Canadian event.

Overall members are thrilled to be finishing off the season with fabulous results.

The Border Cowboy Mounted Shooters has been an active club for the past nine years, and has been instrumental in forming the Canadian club and championship.

According to MacMillan, this area and the shows are a great asset to Canadian shooting.

Cowboy Mounted shooting is a speed event with horses and guns where accuracy and horsemanship play a big role.

“It’s a fun event. People are sure welcome,” said MacMillan.

John “Jack” Whitfield Willes

“I’ve had a good life.” Those sentiments were expressed by Dad only a few days before his passing on November 26, 2018. They were also some of his most understated words.

Jack Willes lived a very full 102 years, 8 months and 34 days. He lived that entire time, except for his time in the army, in the Vermilion/Mannville area.

He was born in Vermilion on March 23, 1916 to Percival and Louisa Willes.

The Willes homestead was 3 kms south of Hwy 16 on Claysmore road.

Jack and two of his brothers, Oliver and Vern took over from their father and began Willes Bros Farm. They raised Registered Angus cattle and continued to break and work the land until they turned it over to the next generations. He was the very definition of a pioneer of this community and country.

Jack married Florence McKenzie in 1943 and had two children, Don and Linda. Years after Florence’s passing he married Norma Watling in 1970.

They were together for 48 years. Jack opened his large heart to Norma’s six children (Georgia, Lorraine, Bernie, Susan, Lois and Vicki) creating a big blended family which continued to gather friends, cousins and grand children along the way. Jack and Norma’s house was always a gathering point for everyone who wanted good food, laughter and of course a few games of crib. Jack was a Jack of all trades and a Master too. He was an adept farmer and a very gifted master carpenter. He was a devoted husband, a stand-up father and grandfather, a loyal friend, a trusted neighbour and a respected and energized senior. He is lovingly remembered and forever cherished by all who knew him.

The family would like to thank all those who visited Jack and Norma over the many years bringing them baking, meals and good company. Our appreciation goes out to the staff at the Vermilion Lodge where Norma continues to reside and to all the caring nurses and doctors at the Vermilion hospital who treated Jack and Norma with such respect and kindness. We would like to express our gratitude to Reverand Andrew Kinoti Lairenge for his inspirational guidance, Organist Dixie Farkash and the United Church Choir for their gift of music. We so appreciated the support and assistance from Lakeland Funeral Home and the Red Feather Ridge for the lovely luncheon. And finally, our sincere gratitude to this community who has lifted our spirits with the many comforting words, generous donations and beautiful flowers. Is it any wonder Dad chose to enjoy his remarkable life of 102 years in the company of such good people.

19th Annual Westman Farms Bred Heifer Sale

Derek Westman hosted the 19th Annual Westman Farms Bred Heifer Sale at the farm on December 3.

This was the first year that the sale had been held at the farm, and the Westman family were grateful for the show of support. Guests were treated to a quality sale along with the opportunity to bid on a donation heifer. Four hundred and twenty bred commercial heifers sold throughout the day (averaging $2,470), and everyone seemed to enjoy the setup. These groups of heifers will now be finding new homes all across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario.

The donation heifer raised a total of $10,300 for the Vermilion Health Centre Palliative Care.

“My father, Murray, spent some time there during his courageous battle with cancer this year. The care he received was phenomenal and we wanted to give back,” said owner, Derek Westman.

It was purchased by Lewis Farms,

Mark Land & Cattle Corp., Northern Livestock Services (NLS), Anchor Lazy U Cattle Co. Ltd., and Kotowich Evergreen Farms for $6,300. They donated it back, and it was then bid up an additional $4,000 going home to Jesse and Jill Guy (Murray’s daughter).

According to Derek, having the sale at the farm was easier on the cattle with less hauling. It provided a way to showcase them in a more natural setting, and gave people the opportunity to see them at home.

He was grateful to industry staff as well as family, friends and neighbours for helping out with the sale and everything that happens on the farm, as well as to all those who have supported the family over the past year.

“We had a great sale, and would like to send out a big thank you to our previous and new buyers, friends and family for all the support. Thank you also to Jim Pulyk and the NLS Crew as well as the DLMS crew for an outstanding job. Having all the wonderful help made the first sale at the farm a success!

Town Of Vermilion Media Release

The presentation delivered by CAO, George Rogers, included highlights of the operating budget, ta x rates, assessment, staffing, capital budget, budget summary, and initiatives for the coming year.

Several weeks ago, I put in my recipe for Sourdough star ter and sour dough bread. It ha s b e e n three weeks, since I started the starter, and it is finally strong enough to raise some bread dough. It always seems to take longer to make the starter when the weather is cooler. Once you have it going you can turn it into yummy authentic sourdough bread, bun and even cinnamon rolls. If you have extra starter, you can always give it to a friend or use it making some pancakes.

With Christmas just around the corner, here is a handy recipe to have when you need to whip up some squares. Butter tarts are a uniquely Canadian Christmas tradition and Butter Tart squares are a twist on this popular treat. Butter tart squares are a popular square from the 1950’s to the 1970’s. These squares were often found at bridal showers, funeral lunches and community pot luck suppers back then. I have fond memories of my mom making it, and there being a pan of butter tart squares sitting on the counter.

Butter tart squares give you all the deliciousness of a butter tart without all the work of rolling out pastry for tart

shells. The base is a type of shortbread while the filling has a buttery caramel flavour. These squares are quick and easy to make and are a nice desert with tea or coffee. They can be frozen in an air tight container and are handy to just pull out of the freezer when unexpected company drops by. Fair warning, if you serve your unexpected guests these yummy treats with coffee, you can expect they will be showing up a lot more often.

Does anyone remember a time you only got told something once by a parent? By the second time around there was a lot less pleasantries involved the next exchange.

It meant even when you weren’t listening, you really were. Maybe along those lines it came from all that time spent growing up where much of your day was spent doing a chore or task visually while your ears were paying attention to the radio, whether it was CFCW country from an open door on the old Red Ford half ton, news broadcast from on top of the fridge

in the kitchen, or CHED pop music riding the school bus. Radio was the main daily diversion available. It doesn’t seem to be quite as applicable to have a radio set on one station in a workplace now (certainly not where I’ve worked for years where no one would ever agree and everyone just sits at their little desks with headphones on anyway), but working out in the middle of Alberta miles from anywhere that radio can sure help the hours drag a lot less while you are plugging away your job.

One of the best ways of taking advantage of those listening ears and that ubiquitous device we all now carry, the smart phone, is listening to podcasts. It has become part of my daily routine for the last few years. If you haven’t taken advantage of this form of media off your phone yet, you should try it. Podcasting has really exploded in the last 5 years and the range of available subjects and casters to listen to has become almost infinite. If you are

Blend the 1 cup of flour, with the 1/2 cup butter, mix in the 1/4 cup sugar.

Press this mixture into the bottom of a 8 x 8” square pan. Bake for 10 minutes.

To make the filling cream the sugar and the butter together, add the eggs.

In a small bowl or cup mix the baking powder and the flour together and then mix this mixture into the filling. Stir in the vanilla and the raisins. Spread the filling over the base and bake for 25 (20 – 30 minutes) at 350 degrees.

William Cameron: Vermilion’s First Publisher

When any community pops up, it is not long before there is a need for news.

Vermilion was no different and it was soon after the founding of the community in 1906 when a man by the name of William Cameron decided to establish the Vermilion Signal. This would be the first newspaper published in the area but that is not what this column is about. No, this is about the man himself, who led a life more interesting than would be expected, where the founding of a newspaper was only a footnote.

William Bleasdell Cameron was born in Trenton, Ontario on July 26, 1862 and first made the decision to come out west in 1881 to work for Alexander MacDonald out of Winnipeg. Assigned to the Battleford trading post, he slowly saved $200 and eventually purchased land for himself and began a life of farming. That lasted for two years before he decided that farming wasn’t for him. He sold out his land for $40 and made his way to Swift Current to work in freight, then it was on to Maple Creek and finally up to Frog Lake in 1884. It was in Frog Lake

that he became a trading partner of George Dill. It was also there he witnessed the Frog Lake Massacre.

After surviving the massacre, which launched the North West Rebellion on April 2, 1885, he was taken captive by Big Bear and held by the Cree for two months. Rather than hold resentment or anger towards his captivity, he came to respect Big Bear.

When he was freed, he was assigned to Major General Strange and was awarded the North West Canada Medal for his role as a scout and guide during the rebellion.

In 1885, he was in Regina for the trial of Big Bear and he spoke in defense of his former captor. He testified to the court that he had heard Big Bear do his best to stop the massacre at Frog Lake. Despite a lot of evidence stating that Big Bear was innocent, he was found guilty of treason and sentenced to three years in jail.

After the trial, he moved to St. Paul, Minnesota and worked as a journalist, before moving on to New York to be editor of the Field and Stream magazine. In 1899, he moved back out west with his wife and family and was there when Vermilion was founded.

In 1906, he founded the Vermilion Signal, which lasted for a decade. He also served

on town council for Vermilion. In 1910, he moved with his family to Bassano, and it is rumored for a period of two years between 1910 and 1925, he was part of the legendary Buffalo Bill show. That is only rumor though.

Cameron pops up again in history in 1925 when he was on hand for the dedication of a stone cairn in memory of the Frog Lake Massacre. He was also at that time writing Blood Red The Sun, his account of the massacre.

In the 1930s, he was living in Heinsburg, where he owned a drug store.

Never one to sit around, from 1943 to 1944, he was the curator of the RCMP museum in Regina. He then resigned from that to become a mink rancher. He gave that up in the 1940s to move to the Pacific coast and become a writer. In June of 1950, he was there for the opening of the Elk Point bridge. During the dedication, he gave credit to the Frog Lake Indigenous people for saving his life during the massacre.

He died at the age of 88 in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan on March 4, 1951.

BE TOLERANT OF YOUR PHYSICAL AD PSYCHOLOGICAL LIMITS Grief loss may leave you feeling fatigued and the low energy level slows you down.

Respect what your body and mind are telling you. Lower your expectations about being at your peak during the holiday season.

ELIMINATE UNNCESSARY STRESS - Avoid isolating but make sure you have some time for yourself. Keeping busy won’t distract you from your grief, but may increase your stress.

BE WITH SUPPORTIVE COMFORTING PEOPLE - Find supportive people

who encourage you to be yourself and accept your feelings, both happy and sad.

TALK ABOUT THE PERSON WHO HAS DIED - Include the person’s name in holiday conversation. Remember that special person who was an important part of your life. Others will likely be more open to acknowledging the loved one’s name if you do.

D O W HAT I S R I G H T FO R YO U DURING THE HOLIDAYS - Instead of going along with other’s plans, focus on what you want too. Discuss your wishes with caring trusted family or friends. Clarify what you want and need during the holiday.

PLAN AHEAD FOR FAMILY GATHERINGS - Decide what family traditions you want to continue and what you would like to begin new. Structure holiday time-have a plan, don’t exhaust yourself mentally or physically. Getting caught off guard can create feelings of panic, fear and anxiety when your feelings of grief are already heightened. Be sure in your structure you leave room for change if needed.

EMBRACE YOUR TREASURE OF MEMORIES - Memories are the best legacies that exist after the death of someone loved. Holidays make you think of the past. Don’t ignore the memories but share them with family and friends.

Upcoming Ron Moses Community Christmas Dinner

The 23rd Annual Ron Moses Community Christmas Dinner will be hosted at the Vermilion Senior’s Centre on December 25, with entertainment at 12 p.m. and dinner at 1 p.m.

It is an opportunity for people who are alone on Christmas Day to enjoy an hour of entertainment and a meal. The meal includes the traditional turkey, three other meat choices, with all the trimmings including perogies and cabbage rolls. Last year, 207 people were served.

The Ron Moses Christmas Dinner is open to everyone. In the past, it hosted those who have events other days during the holiday season but not on Christmas

Day, and people new to the community.

The meal can be delivered to those working or those kept in their homes for medical reasons. Transportation for those without a ride to the Senior’s Centre can be arranged.

“Ron didn’t want to see anyone be alone for Christmas; it’s a family affair. The community is such a giving community, and their donations help to make it a success each year! I’d sure like to find some Bison to serve as our wild meat this year,” said organizer Lynda Moses.

The Ron Moses Christmas Dinner is still in search of entertainers, as well as volunteers to help clean up.

The 6th Annual Blue Christmas in Vermilion was held at the First United Church on December 4.

Traditionally hosted on the longest nig ht of the year, Ver milion o pted to host it earlier to avoid the Christmas rush. Representatives from local funeral homes ushered guests and assisted them in lighting the candles during the ser vice. Guests enjoyed music, comforting words, and fellowship during the service.

Thirty-one Grade 6 students spent some time carolling on December 3 at the extended care of the hospital and at the Vermilion Lodge. The students absolutely loved seeing and spending time with the seniors, and the seniors were seen tapping their toes and singing along to the carols. This is such an amazing service project.

The Gideons came to visit the Grade 5 students on December 5 for a presentation about their organization and to give each student their own copy of the New Testament. It should be noted that only students with their parents’ permission attended this presentation and received a copy of the New Testament.

In the culminating activity, students had the opportunity to submit their feedback through an online survey, and to have their responses shared with the Department of Finance and all political parties so that they can see what matters most to young Canadians as they develop their platforms for the October federal election.

Mrs. Joa kicked off the 12 School Days of Christmas with a reindeer/elf activity. Every day until Dec. 21, we will have a new Christmas challenge for the students.

We are pleased to welcome some new staff members to our school. Miss Jasmine Penz and Mrs. Darcie Maier are working as Instructional Assistants in our school and will help us to continue to meet students’ needs. As well, we welcomed back Mr. Geoff Faull, who is teaching part-time in Grade 6. We are happy to confirm that he will be with us in this position until the Christmas break and then Mrs. Jodie Molsberry will join our staff in Grade 6A for the remainder of the school year.

Vermilion RCMP Investigate Fatal Collision With Pedestrian

Vermilion, Alberta – On December 5, 2018 just before 10:00 p.m., RCMP responded to Highway 16 in the west bound lanes at Highway 41 for a report of a collision with a pedestrian.

A semi tractor trailer unit was travelling west when it struck a p e d e s t r i a n o n t h e r o a d w a y.

Em e r g e n c y c r ew s r e s p o n d e d b u t the 27-year-old male pedestrian was pronounced dead on scene.

The investigation is ongoing and is

being assisted by an RCMP Collision Reconstructionist.

During the holid ay season, many of us return to family traditions that we may have been participating in since our childhood. Often these traditions bring back fond memories, they connect members of your families together, they provide opportunities to include new members of your family, and they give us something to l o o k fo r war d to. S o m e p e o p l e, however, for a variety of reasons, may not participate in traditions or may be looking to start some new traditions of their own.

What exactly is a family tradition?

It is a behavior or action that a family participates in repeatedly, usually at the same time or in the same way for a specific purpose. Family Traditions Build Connections of New Family Traditions, explains that there are several reasons why establishing traditions are so important for families. Traditions provide a source of identit y for your family and can teach children where your family came from and explain both culture and religion. They can also strengthen the family bond as family members spend time together. Traditions are also a great way to connect the generations within a family as older members pass down the traditions to younger members. Traditions can add rhy thm and seasonalit y to your life as dif ferent traditions are often connected to different seasons.

Finally, traditions are a great way to create memories and of fer comfor t and security.

So how can you get started building traditions for your family? First, spend some time remembering your childhood traditions. If you have a partner, consider how to merge your traditions with those of your par tner. Second, if you’d like to create

some new traditions unique to your i m m e d i ate fa m i l y, m a ke s ur e t h at they have both a pur pose and are personal which will make them more rewarding for ever yone. Third, take it slow and introduce only one new idea at a time so that no one is overwhelmed with the changes. Consider that although many family traditions are linked to holidays, most do not have to be. Daily family traditions can include things like notes in your children’s lunches, bedtime stories, and sitting down together as a family for one meal a day. Monthly tradi tions could be things like full moon walks, monthly volunteering, dates with Dad or Mom (special times for individual time with Dad or Mom.) Of course holiday or seasonal traditions like community service or donating, decorating, baking, and carolling, are also very special. lion on Sunday December 2. Everyone played well and our team brought home a bronze medal. For our Christmas party we will be going to Lloydminster after Christmas for some fun activities. January 4 is 4-H night at Rogers

Place in Edmonton where the Oil Kings will be taking on the Victoria Royals. At our next meeting we will have a public speaking workshop with Quinn Hlus where she will give an overview on how to write and deliver a 4-H speech. Our

Dignitaries, family, and friends gathered to celebrate the Grand Opening of Self Centred Yoga & Wellness in Vermilion on December 5.

The new business is located at 4819 47 Avenue, and guests were treated to a tour and information about their services.

Chelsea and Courtney Bessette will be

offering body talk, yoga, doula support, and are looking to hire a massage therapist.

“We’re so happy to be here, and to have your support,” said Courtney.

The sisters have been in the area for 11 years and have always wanted to open their own business. The practices help with loosening muscles and detoxification, and when the owners realized the differ-

ence that wellness had made in their own lives, they wanted to be able to offer it to others.

“With our business name, we wanted to go with a name that put self first; and we encourage changing the way we look at self care. What is important to everyone is different along with their needs,” said Chelsea.

Their business mission statement is

Local author, Dawn Flaata, will be hosting a book reading event for her new book, ‘Unredeemed,’ at the Vermilion Public Library at 6 p.m. on January 10.

Writing under the pseudonym, J M Dolan, Flaata spent the past few years writing the mystery/suspense/thriller with a hint of romance. She is excited to present her book in the Vermilion area and said, “It’s a lot easier to talk about your work and present it to your local community because they are already invested and want to support you as soon as you walk in the door.”

She recently presented it at the Mannville Public Library and was thankful for the support.

“Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, and had good questions and really good laughs,” said Flaata.

Flaata managed her parent’s jewellery store in Vermilion for 20 years before working for the MP’s office for 10 years. She had written some in her 20’s, and decided that she wanted to try it again. She first published a short story in the magazine, ‘Our Canada’ before opting to write a book.

“Half of getting started is getting started,” said Flaata.

With the proceeds of their smile cookies, the Vermilion Tim Horton’s donated $1,967 to help support KidSport in the area on December 10.

Run through the Vermilion Town Office, KidSport relies on donations to support children joining and staying in sports. According to the Town of Vermilion’s director of community services, Shawn Bell, the past couple years have seen a greater time of need for the program, and has supported 30 – 35 children this year.

“We know that sports expose children to learning to work as a team developing

their social skills, as well as connecting them to other healthy families encouraging them to lead active lifestyles. Without the support of people like Greg and Tim Horton’s, we would not be able to offer this to children in our area; we appreciate it very much,” said Shawn Bell.

“All of the staff here worked hard making the cookies, and we would like to thank the townspeople for supporting families in need. We are pleased to be able to support this program because it allows children to purchase equipment or fulfill their needs, as well as to participate in a lot of different things they may never have had the chance to,” said Vermilion Tim Horton’s owner, Greg Whitney.

Somewhere along 48B Avenue, one of the shackles came loose allowing Porky and Rooster to escape...despite being bound together.

Their escape went unnoticed by the transport operator. At some point that afternoon, a Mr. Robinson (town resident) was erecting Christmas decorations, and came across something unusual in a snowbank. Upon inves-

tigation, he disc overed Pork y and Rooster still bound together, their cover-up attire intact, but suffering from hypothermia. Mrs. Robinson, doing her part, contacted Savvy Moms and the RCMP (the felons were a valuable catch and awaiting their sentencing!) Porky and Rooster were subsequently returned to the Mall Institution (MacD’) and put in the cooler in lockup.

A s wo r d g ot o u t , t h e e s c a p e wa s brought to the attention of the paddy wagon operator and that the RCMP had escorted these escapes back to the MacD institution. On the following morning of Sunday, December 9th, the

duo were again placed in the custody of the paddy wagon operator (a more secure and barred green wagon) and driven to their original destination, where they were sentenced to community service. They will be serving their sentences along with Bo -Vine and their many accomplices at the tables of families in need.

Sentences will var y according to need.

This is a tongue-in-check accounting of true events.
