J.R. Robson School hosted the 50th Annual ASAA Cross Country Running Provincial Championships at the Vermilion Provincial Park on October 20. Hundreds of high school students travelled from across Alberta to compete for their personal bests and gain team points, with junior, intermediate, and senior men’s and women’s races ranging from 4 - 6 km, as well as a 2 km Para Race. Dignitaries, athletes, and fans gathered for the Opening Ceremonies, and cheered one another on as they crossed the finish line. Les Parsons emceed the event, with Cross Country Running CommissionerDarryl Smith, ASAA Executive DirectorJohn Paton, Vermilion Mayor-Caroline McAuley, and Meet Director-Kelly Scully each giving a special address. Paton thanked the sponsors, volunteers, athletes, and coaches, and went on to encourage sportsmanship. “I’ve been where you are as a runner.
You’re among the best in Alberta. I want to wish you all the best,” said Smith. “It’s super exciting to see this many children representing your schools and your communities. This is your day; have fun and enjoy the race and comradery. Never underestimate what you can do,” said Mayor Caroline McAuley. Parsons shared his coaching history in cross country running and other athletic events with athletes who went on to compete nationally, on the world stage, and at the Olympics. “Don’t stop; keep on going, and have a positive attitude,” said Parsons. Parsons made mention of the late Walter Scott who continued running into his 80’s. “My inspiration comes from friends like these,” added Parsons. The athlete’s oath was read by J.R. Robson students, and Jan Scott who had encouraged Parsons to coach, presented awards. Overall, athletes championed the cooler temperatures, and were thrilled to be

much longer.” According to Van Horne Institute’s president and CEO, Alex Phillips, Digital Futures brings together government, industry, and academia to try and drive policy from the bottom up, based on reliable facts. “The advantage is that we can monitor what government is doing, that they are keeping with industry needs, and the timing for those needs to be met. The strength of the symposium is the diversity of people’s interests that have a shared goal to develop the internet for the benefit of everyone. This way, you drive more insights into what the policy should be. With any network, whether it’s a railroad or what have you, the key policy should be an adequate level of service to meet community needs at reasonable prices,” said Phillips. Alberta HUB Region executive director, Bob Bezpalko agreed saying, “All these different entities play such a critical part in this.” Councillor Rob Pulyk spoke on behalf of the Vermilion River Regional Alliance stating that the digital revolution is similar to
the industrial revolution. He said that with high-speed internet being a necessary service, small communities have difficulty retaining people and business. “ It af fe c ts c ommerc e with d ebit machines shutting down during busy sales times. When uploading 1GB, it took me four hours, and I thought my computer was going to burn up. Broadband can also improve education and provide better health services. It’s imperative for our region to have broadband,” said Pulyk. Local businessman, Randy Martin, president of Rock Solid Group Of Companies expressed the challenges that his company faces with the current level of internet in Vermilion. “We have issues trying to communicate with operations and sales, and other companies wanting real-time data. Accounting has to come in evenings and weekends, and even with DropBox, we get kicked out of our accounting system and windows. Because of the download speed, storing data has become an issue, and on occasion, we had to resort to using CDs.
In today’s society that is a step backward as many computers don’t even have a spot for them now. I have tried to do online orientation, but have had to have employees do orientation from home due to getting disconnected. Four – five times per month we have to re-boot our system. It’s tough when you can see a shop a block away and can’t communicate with them. Two or three years ago we set up Skype with a Sales group in Calgary but have gone back to teleconference because we can’t have a full meeting conducive to today’s environment. We deal with companies whose accounting is international, and we can’t use the systems they require. We have also had to take information to Edmonton to have other companies enter it. It also affects the security on all of our sites. Innovation is a part of our mission statement, and we are struggling to do that today. In order to survive in today’s market, we need to have better services available in rural Alberta,” said Martin.
The Van Horne Institute hosted a Digital Futures Symposium at the Pomeroy Inn & Suites in Vermilion on October 18. People from around the province gathered to look at a provincial broadband strategy and what’s next at the 9th symposium since 2013. Speakers updated guests on why the need to address regional connectivity is so great and how to achieve rural broadband. MLA for Fort Saskatchewan Vegreville, Jessica Littlewood; and Vermilion - Lloydminster MLA, Dr. Richard Starke both made appearances at the symposium. Bryndis Whitson, Van Horne Institute’s Director of Stakeholder Relations said, “It’s a great opportunity because everyone from Vermilion to Grand Prairie to Taber can discuss how we can all learn from each other and work together. Broadband can allow senior’s to age in place, keep youth in a community, and progress business. I can see significant improvement in the past five years, but there is still a ways to go. There is a very big need; 650,000 Albertans don’t have access to the internet requirements that everyone should have. Part of this includes making sure that students have access at home in order to do their homework. I’ll never forget our very first symposium when a gentleman from California shared how they were able to better care for his mother-in-law in rural Newfoundland. What they did was install internet and cameras so they could communicate differently. What she did as a result was get dressed every day, and left a red cup out if she wanted them to call. They did stretching exercises together, and they could tell where she was going when she left the house based on how much medication she took with her. Night Owl 1675 – Grand Opening

Community members gathered with staff and dignitaries at the Night Owl 1675 as they celebrated their Grand Opening in Vermilion on October 19. The vape shop opened on June 15, and offers vaping products, clothing, artwork, and 420 accessories. They also have new e-juice blends available in a variety of strengths and flavours. I am so happy to see combines rolling. I hope all the farmers can get their crops off, after an extremely trying harvest season. This has become one of my favorite recipes during this fall. It is for six pancakes, and it is quick and easy to make for breakfast or as a rustic dessert. You can double or triple this recipe, depending on how many you are cooking for. This is a gluten-free version of pancakes. Almost all of the carbohydrates in ground flax seed are fiber, making this a great low carb food suitable for diabetics, Paleo, Keto or low cab diets. Flax is one of those foods that we seldom eat, yet it has a multitude of benefits. When eating flax it is best to consume the ground flax seed. Whole flax seed will simply pass right through, without giving you the benefit

of its unique nutritional profile. Ground flax seed is high in magnesium, manganese and vitamin B1. You can buy flax seed ground, or you can purchase the whole seed and freshly grind it in a coffee grinder. Ground flax seeds are high in both soluble and non-soluble fiber, which help lower cholesterol. The fiber in flax also helps with good digestion, blood sugar balance and weight loss. Flax contains special fiber related poly phenol antioxidants called lignans. The lignans found in flax are converted by our gut bacteria to produce balanced hormones, and reduce the risk of breast cancer, as well as a reduced risk of prostate, colon and ovarian cancer. Because flax helps to balance hormones, it is beneficial to menopausal women as well. Flax seeds are rich in a form of healthy omega 3 that is called ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). ALA is beneficial for the hair, skin and nails. Flax seeds also contain protein with an amino acid panel that favors improved immune

I like to make a whipped topping to serve with it that is also low to almost zero carb. Flax & Coconut Pancakes ( makes 6 pancakes) 2 tablespoons ground flax seed 1 tablespoon coconut flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder Pinch of sea salt 2 large eggs 2 tablespoons unsweetened yogurt 2 tablespoon water 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon olive oil or melted coconut oil (optional) Combine ground flax seed coconut flour, salt and baking powder. Stir in the yogurt, water, eggs and vinegar, stir until blended. Preheat a heavy bottomed pan on medium. Add a few teaspoons of butter. Spoon the batter into the frying
pan into three medium pancakes. Cook, covered until browned on one side and then flip. Repeat for the next three, or if you have a grill you a cook them all at once. Cook until browned on the second side. Serve with the topping of your choice. They are really good with any berries such as strawberries or blueberries and whipped cream or butter and your favorite syrup. If you need to watch your blood sugar a sprinkle of cinnamon is the perfect finish. Keto Whipped Topping 1/3 cup whipping cream 3 single serving package of Stevia 2 tablespoons plain or Greek yogurt 4 tablespoon cottage cheese Whip the cream until it is at stiff peaks, ass the stevia, yogurt and cottage cheese and whip. Serve on the pancakes, or freeze slightly for a yummy almost zero carb ice cream. You can add additional Stevia to taste or use sugar, if you are not on a special diet.

Jaxon Haldane And The Carter Felker Trio Wows Crowd

Jaxon Haldane and the Carter Felker Trio wowed the crowd at the first show of the season for the Vermilion Folk Club on October 20th at the Vermilion Legion. The Carter Felker Trio opened the show performing their folk music with a touch of country and humouring the crowd between songs with comical interludes as he described the life experience in which the song came from. Felker met Jaxon Haldane a couple of years ago at the ‘Wide Cut Weekend’ and expressed his excitement to be opening for Jaxon. “I met Jaxon at the festival, and I am honoured to be here. I first became interested in playing music when I saw a guy pick a guitar when I was 17 and
I wanted to write songs and play for people,” explained Felker. Felker who now lives in Calgar y has been a solo artist since 2015 but recently became the Trio a year ago. “This is our first tour out and our first time in Vermilion. We are excited to be here and we are having a blast,” said Felker. Fe l ker wa s j o i n e d by h i s b a n d mates Ben Longman on guitar and Ben Comeau who played bass guitar. When asked how they became interested in music their reply was similar. “My parents were musicians, so I didn’t really have a choice. It’s nice to play with other people and connect,” said Longman. “I wanted to try music in junior high, and I started on the Tuba, but switched to bass when I was 13. You hope to
c onne c t with peo ple through your music,” said Comeau. The Carter Felker Trio will be performing their next gig in Edmonton on Oct 26 and 27, and you can check out their other tour dates on Car ter Felker’s Facebook. Jaxon Haldane from Winnipeg, Manitoba was the main performer of the night and opened the evening by expressing how excited he was to have Carter and his band opening the show. Haldane first performed in Vermilion with his band, the D. Rangers, in May of 2017. “I played here with my band the D. Rangers which is more of a mutant bluegrass feel. The band has a wild personality where we like to mix bluegrass with other genres. My solo show doesn’t represent us a band. It gives
me the opportunity to play some of my compositions that don’t really fit with the band. My solo performances are more a mixture of folk blues and vintage country,” said Haldane. Haldane has been performing for 20 years as a solo artist as well as with the band D. Rangers. Haldane will also be touring internationally with Gordie Tentrees; going to Europe in November and to the U.K. in January. He has also toured Australia and the southern United States. “I am excited to be here. Most of my songwriting draws from personal experiences in a mix of upbeat and down tempo songs,” explained Haldane. The audience could be seen throughout the evening tapping their hands and swaying to the music. They clapped with enthusiasm during guitar solos and after each song performed by the artists.

Town of Vermilion Notice of increase to Franchise Fee on Natural Gas Billings The Town of Vermilion is proposing to increase the natural gas distribution franchise fee which it charges ATCO Gas and Pipelines Ltd., for the exclusive right to deliver natural gas to the residents of the Town of Vermilion and for use of municipal lands for its natural gas lines. The franchise fee applies to all customers that receive gas services in the Town of Vermilion; and is required to be billed as a separate charge on gas billings. The current franchise fee is set at 15% for ATCO Gas and Pipelines Ltd. delivery revenues and will increase to 17 % effective January 1, 2019. For an average residential customer using 120 GJ’s per year, this will result in an annual increase of about $9.92 from the average paid in 2018. The franchise fee currently accounts for approximately $74.36 of the average annual bill. An organizational meeting preceded the Town Council Meeting in Vermilion on October 16. Noting that this council has served one year of their term, Mayor Caroline McAuley said, “It has been nothing short of a whirlwind. Our new council has come together very well, and we have taken on a number of exciting and rewarding initiatives. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing, but we have seen positive results, learned some very good lessons, and I believe we are well positioned to see another exciting year. It is challenging for staff to realign to a new council and their tempo of activity; however despite having a brand new CAO and being without a CFO for six months, things have continued to move forward.” McAuley said that one of the successes throughout the year was the Alberta Works office being open on a full-time basis to adequately serve the community after five years of partial public access. She also says that Service Canada will be offering services from the Alberta Works office in Vermilion (4701-52 Street) including CPP, OAS, and EI on October 25, 2018; January 31, 2019; April 25, 2019; July 25, 2019; and October 31, 2019. McAuley felt that the New Retail

Commercial Development Incentive Program was an overwhelming success with seven new businesses opening in the downtown. For 2019, she is expecting that the Town of Vermilion will move towards completion of the Water Treatment Plant, continue to fight for broadband, explore options for the airport, explore composting, and explore the replacement of a 55-year-old ice plant. “None of this could have been achieved without the continued working together of council members and the town staff; thank you to all of you. I am humbled to work with such a great team and know that we will continue to raise the bar on what can be achieved in Vermilion when we all work together,” said McAuley. During the Council Meeting, two motions were carried effective January 1, 2019; one for the Atco Gas Franchise Fee to increase from 15 per cent to 17 per cent, costing residents $9 per year; the other for the Atco Electric Franchise Fee to increase from 4.5 per cent to 6 per cent, costing residents $1.61 per month. CAO, George Rogers expressed that they will gauge public response, but unless it had been a significant increase, is not anticipating a large reaction. He also reported that the Town has
secured an individual for the Director of Finance position that will begin midDecember, and have hired Teresa Mussier to fill the position temporarily. When discussing the Vermilion and District Housing Foundation Minutes, Mayor McAuley said that the Valley Lodge is well positioned to get a good CAO, as they have conducted five interviews with extremely strong candidates. She also said that the Valley Lodge has hired an executive chef as the food supervisor. During roundtable discussions, Rogers said, “It’s worth noting the legalization of cannabis. I have put a notice on the town website and Facebook to remind the public of bylaws for potential sale and use of cannabis in our community.” Councillor Thompson said that the pollinator gardens have been deadheaded and cleaned up for fall. Councillor McCullough said that Islay, Kitscoty, and Marwayne are all connected to ACE water, but have none flowing yet. Council-
lor Henderson acknowledged the Town staff who had been nominated for Small Business Awards, and said that Communities in Bloom is desperate for new core members to help organize. Mayor McAuley added that she attended the Mayor’s Caucus and was shocked at the amount of American effort to stop the oil industry. “Municipal leaders will be gathering together to address the federal government. This needs to stop,” said McAuley.

the Canadian Government. “Do your taxes on time every year,” encouraged Peter Schwartz (in order to avoid delays). As well, people had the opportunity to learn about the Alberta Senior’s Benefit, Special Needs Assistance, Dental and Optical Assistance, and reviewed various senior’s housing information.

Par tners Todd Ree, Rod Fadden, Randy Fadden, and Tom Hartwell are brimming with excitement as their new venture gets underway. “I think my whole life I’ve been living up to this. It is perfect; there is a blend of science and artistry, with a huge component of social interaction. I love the simplicity and the details,” said Ree who has his certificate of completion from a Master Distiller’s Course. T h e gr o u p w ill b e s p e n d in g t h e next months building and shopping for equipment, as well as acquiring permits and licences from all levels of government. They will primarily be making vodka, gin, and eventually whisky (but it will have to be casked for three years), and possibly rum. Thank You Bus Drivers! The Board, staff, and students of Buffalo Trail Public Schools, would like to thank all of our School Bus Contractors and Drivers for their dedication to school bus safety. BTPS contract bus operators travel over 14,000 km a day in good weather and bad on smooth roads and bumpy roads to transport children safely to and from school. Just like it is the bus driver’s responsibility to safely transport the children to and from school, it is the parent or guardian’s responsibility to make sure their children get safely to and from the bus stop. It is everyone’s responsibility to stop when they see a school bus with its red flashing lights activated. Please do your part to help bus drivers keep our students safe, DO NOT PASS a school bus from either direction when the RED LIGHTS ARE FLASHING. Amber lights are a warning to motorists following or approaching a bus that they are slowing down to make a passenger stop. Passing a school bus puts children at risk. Together we can continue to make the school bus the safest means of student transportation. If you see someone pass a school bus with its red lights flashing, please call your local RCMP to report them, it is a $543 fine and 6 demerit points. Some of our contracted school buses are equipped with video cameras on the outside of their buses to catch violators. The Provincial School Bus Safety Slogan for the Red Flashing Light Awareness Campaign is “REDS FLASHING…NO PASSING!” The campaign’s goal is to reduce the number of school bus fly-by’s. Help do your part in making this a reality, and keep our students safe when getting on and off the school bus. School bus safety is a shared responsibility!

LORNE WASYLISHEN OCTOBER 7, 2018
We are deeply saddened at the loss of Lorne Paul Wasylishen. Lorne was born in Tofield, AB on April 9, 1951 to Paul and Esther Wasylishen. He was pre-deceased by his father Paul, in 1977, and sister Barbara Garneau, in 2010. Left to mourn are his Mother Esther, brother Tyler, nephews Quin and Jon, and niece Kathryn. Lorne was raised on a farm north-east of Vermillion, AB with the family moving into town in the 1960’s. He played football in school and was the goalie for the 1967 (Centennial) Vermillion Midget Championship. After graduation, Lorne hired on to CNR in Edmonton, as a signalman assistant. Later he moved to Jasper, AB and went to Engineer school in Gimli, Man. He worked in Jasper for 10 years. Lorne eventually moved to Smithers, BC and has been in the Bulkley Valley for over 40 years. During that time, he enjoyed skiing and having get-togethers at his cabin on Hudson Bay Mountain. He also loved golfing, fishing, biking, camping at Kispiox and being part of the community. Over the years he travelled to many countries in the world; had many adventures and stories to tell. From a young age, Lorne was interested in collectibles and old family antique furniture. He spent much time doing research on his Aladdin Wabash home in town. In recent years, he took a great interest in collecting pocket watches and especially Grand Trunk Pacific Railway ones. Lorne had a vast collection of watches and cases that gave him many hours of enjoyment. Recently, his health had limited his ability to do the many things he loved. He will be missed by his many friends and family. Lorne passed away on Oct. 7, 2018. A celebration of his life will be held in the spring in Smithers, BC, with the date to be announced later. Condolences may be mailed to PO Box 3494, Smithers, BC V0J 2N0. Donations in his name may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Vermilion Canada Post Fundraising For Alberta Charities

On O ctober 16, members of the public were excited at the sight of Jelly Bean filled confetti cupcakes, topped with a meringue treat homemade by Sheila Gow. This is the program’s third year in Vermilion, and last year the founda-
tion raised $1.2 million nationally. Being recognized by this national on-farm food safety program means Lakeland’s Student-Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland (SMF ) reflects the highest standards for food safety, animal care and environmental stewardship. “We’re excited to receive the VBP+ certification because it’s a check for us to ensure we are farming, ranching and raising cattle in a sustainable manner – environmentally, economically and socially. 5C took time during their social studies class to write some Postcards for Peace to honor the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One. This year the Grade 5 students will be sending these postcards to Armed Forces Members at Cold Lake Air Force Base. Miss Barlow, a U of A student teacher, began her nine week practicum right after Thanksgiving. She will be here almost until Christmas, working in 2B with Mrs. Tupper. As well, VES has been fortunate to have several Lakeland College EA students come to our school on a weekly basis to learn and help out in classrooms. The regular VES School Council meeting was held on October 15. Various information was shared, including a presentation from our VIBE Coordinator, Mrs. Alana PinkoskiBenoit. Mrs. Doherty also spoke about the Accelerated Reader program. Mr. Anhorn shared that current student numbers are up from projections, which helps in the school budget. As a result, VES is looking to hire an additional half-time teacher. As well, student highlights included a trip to WE Day at Roger’s Place in Edmonton for ten of our students on October 12. It was an exciting day for them, getting them excited about the local and global projects they are working on for this school year. The Grade 4 classes took a field trip on October 17 to learn more about waste management in Vermilion as part of the
Waste in Our World Science unit where students learned about reducing, reusing, recycling, repairing, and recovering waste. Their stops included Valley Auto Parts to discuss reusing vehicle parts, the Town of Vermilion recycle lot to view a variety of recycling bins and grass recycling areas, outside of the Community Closet where they talked about reusing clothing, north of town to the Waste Transfer Station where they met Fran and looked at the various areas where the recycling process begins (metal, batteries, oil, electronics, paint and a lot more) and they also learned that their garbage is transported to Ryley by semitruck. Since the inception of the blue bag recycling program in Vermilion, the amount of waste transported to the station has decreased. Thank you Fran for the excellent tour. Their last stop was at the Vermilion Bottle Depot where they learned about bottle and can recycling from Mr. Elkadry, who told them that Alberta currently recycles more than 80% of all cans and bottles. The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to VES from October 25-29. We invite your entire family to support this literary event. Proceeds go directly towards obtaining new books for our Library Learning Commons. Besides books, there are cool pens, pencils, sharpeners, erasers, diaries, science projects, and early hands on learning products. We also have a Family Night where you can come shop until 8:00 pm on Thursday. If parents join their child at the book fair, you can complete an event draw ballot to win $50 in books - $25 for your family plus $25

VES is very excited to once again have the Roots of Empathy program in our school. This program teaches children about feelings, their own feelings and the feelings of others. Through the experiential learning of watching baby grow and reach milestones, the children develop empathy. Once every three weeks Baby Tenley and mom Dallis will visit the 2A classroom and Baby Bea and mom Mrs. Throndson will visit the 2B classroom. 2A welcomed Baby Tenley on September 18 for the first time. They were very excited to meet her and ask questions they had about her growth and temperament. Mom Dallis enjoyed answering them. 2B is anxiously awaiting their first visit from Baby Bea which will take place in November. Hundreds of students visited Lakeland College as they held an Open House at both Lloydminster and Vermilion campuses on October 19 - 20. Vermilion campus was a hive of activity as the Open House was held in combination with a Career Fair, Little Royal Rodeo, and Band In The Sand. Approximately 400 students had the opportunity to tour the college and experience demonstrations at the farm, in different trades, and at the Emergency Training Centre. Six schools in the local region attended as well as high school students from all over Alberta, Saskatchewan, and one family from Ontario. “The Open House is a great opportunity for students to try out Lakeland College as a potential post-secondary option,” said Recruitment Advisor, Danielle White. “I love the small community feel and friendly faces at Lakeland College,” said Student Ambassador, Tamara Lindstrom who is a third year Lakeland College student completing her Bachelor of Applied Science degree. Prospective student, Dustin Pinder, from Elk Point said, “The tours were really fun and educational. It gives you a chance to experience all of the different trades.” During the Career Fair, prospective and current students enjoyed networking with industry representatives and seeing what was available for universities and exchange programs; agriculture, oil industry, and interior design positions; as well as government, human, and health services. Heather Clair from Farmer’s Edge said, “It’s two-fold because we are recruiting summer students for the data and variable rate side, and getting to talk to students is really fun because they get the technical side.” While preparing to compete in calf roping, steer wrestling, and team roping Stettler’s Brayden Roch said, “Little Royal is the best college rodeo of the year by far.”

The Vermilion Chamber of Commerce hosted their annual Small Business Awards Gala at the Vermilion Regional Centre on October 20. “We are thrilled to celebrate small business in Vermilion. This year we had record nominations, and attendance increased by approximately 50 people. Our nominations came directly from people in the community; this alone is a win in itself,” said President, Brett Flanders.

community in Prince Edward Island, Poirier said that he was originally terrified of public speaking, but challenged himself to overcome the fear by taking a course, through which he became involved with stand-up comedy. “As a community, find a way to rally together and be creative. What is your common purpose? Write a mission statement, and personalize people’s experiences. Provide engagement, empowerment, and involvement, and deliver the unexpected. As a business owner, are you creating ‘wow’ experiences for your customers? You can do so by even just opening the door, smiling, and being passionate about other people. Successful people live with purpose and have found their passion. Be willing to share your story, and find ways to share it,” said Poirier. After conducting thousands of his interviews with highly achieving people, Poirier said that their happiness is almost never about money. According to Poirier, being wealthy is about having family and commu-
nity around. As for the awards, Phyllis Maki, General Manager for Lloydminster Community Futures presented the award for Rookie Business of the Year to The Red Brick. Town of Vermilion Economic Development Coordinator, Mary Lee Prior, presented the Employee of the Year Award to Sara Giesbrecht. TD Bank presented the Employer of the Year award to Ebony Jenson from Mainstreet Hardware. Candice Anderson presented the Spirit of Vermilion award to Jack Rehill from Vermilion UFA Farm Supply. Janine Lange and Brandon Tupper presented the Inspiring Youth Award to Chloe Maxwell from Coco’s Sweet Shoppe. A new category this year was the Agricultural Spirit Award that was awarded to Ireland Farm Equipment. Brett Flanders presented the Business of the Year award to Advantage Insurance, as well as the President’s Choice award to Snelgrove Construction.
