Approximately 150 people attended the Pancake Breakfast at the Mannville Fire Department on October 6.

Created by a past Fire Chief for a communit y member with Muscular Dystrophy, the crew continues to support the same cause and create fire prevention awareness. Overall, the community enjoyed the opportunity to get together and support the Fire Department.

With the breakfast being hosted for over 30 years, it continues to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy. “ The Mannville Fire Depar tment is community-based, and the breakfast was another success,” said Fire Captain Dean Gadke, who added that a member of the Fire Department also Firefighters Zane Polishuk (back) and has a family member who is affected George Steiner (front) preparing eggs,

Kayak Canoe Parade Challenge

Even with several inches of snow, people from all over nor th-eastern Alberta gathered with their canoes and kayaks on October 8, in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record.

Darlene Crawford made the application, and was thrilled with the support despite the large amount of snow. Many participants thanked her for hosting the event, and some wore costumes and decorated their boats.

Co-organizer, Jim Storch said, “We persevered through adversity which makes for the most memorable memories.”

Getting down the hill to the boat launch, some participants even rode in their kayaks and as if they were toboggans.

Councillor Clint McCullough added, It was a great event; a lot of fun!”

M a ny q u e s t i o n e d t h e a p p r o p r i ate wardrobe, and Todd Ree skied and paddled on the same day. Participants travelled from Mannville, Vermil-

ion, Kitscoty, Marwayne, Lloydminster, and Lac La Biche, but many others were unable to attend due to road conditions.

Darlene Crawford said, “Unfor tunately we have to report that we did not break the record (with approximately 74 kayaks/canoes in the parade) today, but we have some incredible Albertans out here; look at the smiles!”

St. Jerome’s Terry Fox Run

Students at St. Jerome’s School were full of excitement as they hosted their annual Terry Fox Run on October 3.

Students had the option of donating or filling pledge sheets, and helped to support the cause. Children in elementary, junior, and senior high were all excited for the opportunity to be outdoors, despite the cooler temperatures.

For the second year, Student Council members volunteered to host stations for an optional Colour Run for grades 7 - 12.

As part of St. Jerome’s Day prior to the run, new students were welcomed and initiated into their school houses; Fraser, Mackenzie, and Cartier. Runners collected popsicle sticks along their routes to obtain points for

their houses.

Vice Principal, Allan MacMillan thanked students for showing their school spirit throughout the day and said, “The children had a lot of fun, and today was a great celebration of community.”

Student, Ashley Corbiere said, “I like the exercise and being outdoors!”

Student, Austin Laurence added, “Raising awareness for cancer research is important.”

As of 2017, the Terry Fox Foundation had helped to raise over $750 million for Cancer research.

In conclusion teacher, Anna Svenungard said, “St. Jerome’s Day is always awesome; it’s a great school event.”

Members of the community were thrilled to participate in the first Drop In and Knit session of the season at the Vermilion Public Library on Octob er 3 . M e et i n g eac h We d n e s d ay from 5:30 -7 p.m., the program will continue until December 5. Participants at all skill levels worked from different patterns, making dishcloths, scar ves, or anything they desired.

One par ticipant even brought yarn that had been made from the wool of her own sheep. “ With knit ting, there are lots of ways to do the same thing; to cast on, how to create a slip knot the easiest way, etc. With a group, everyone can share their ideas, and it helps with all of the different levels. Some people are crocheting, and there are many interesting products that everyone is making.

Jaxone Haldane will headline the first show of the Vermilion Folk Club’s new season on October 20, at 8 p.m. at the Vermilion Legion.

Haldane is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer who has been compared to the likes of Hank Willams and Johnny Ramone. According to his bio, his ability to blend genres, while incorporating vocal and instrumental depth makes him one of Canada’s “great,

underappreciated treasures.”

From Winnipeg, Manitoba, Haldane is expected to deliver an engaging show, rich with intensity and emotion. His sound and style will include an edgy mix of punk rock, vintage country, Dixieland, blues.

Opening for Haldane will be Carter Felker from Calgary, Alberta. Felkner is a country/folk artist expected to deliver raw performances mixing songs of angst and humour.

Tickets for $20 can be purchased at the Vermilion Credit Union or at the door.

Lighten Up Therapy and Wellness Centre hosted a Halloween Harvest Swap And Sell on October 2 - 5. Families had the opportunity to find costumes and home decor throughout the week with proceeds being donated to the VES Hot Lunch Program.

“I wanted to do something to support hot lunch; it’s a great program for those who don’t get it and for parents not to have to pack them. I would like to thank the community for their donations and support of the event,” said Owner Amber Howard.

Fire Prevention And Thanksgiving

According to Fire Prevention Canada on average fire kills eight people each week in Canada with residential fires accounting for 73 per cent of those deaths.

This week is Fire Prevention week and the theme this year is “Look. Listen. Learn.

Be Aware- Fire Can Happen Anywhere.”

The latest statistics from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) show that if you have a reported fire in your home, you are more likely to die today than you were a few decades ago. This startling statistic is behind this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme.

While fire alarms are an essential part of a fire escape plan, it is not a substitute

for your fire prevention plans. The theme this year is meant to educate us about the three basic but critical steps to reduce the chances of having a fire.

Look- for places fire could start. Take a good look around your home. Identify potential fire hazards and take care of them.

Listen- for the sound of the smoke alarm. You could have only minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Go to your outside meeting place, which should be a safe distance from the home and where everyone should meet.

Learn- two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter.

Always discuss fire prevention strategies and escape routes with all members of your family. A wonderful site to help with all your fire prevention education and

It has a lot of facts and articles of great interest; plus they have a kids zone.

Fire Prevention Week is not only a week about prevention and fire safety it is also an excellent time to take the opportunity to show how much we appreciate our firefighter members in our community and surrounding areas for helping keep us safe in one of the most traumatic times in our lives. They put their lives on the line for us every time they are called to attend a fire.

This past weekend was also Thanksgiving weekend, and I would like to say thank you to everyone in my life who supports me during the good times and the bad times. Life isn’t always a bed of roses, and it is important to acknowledge the people in your life who help you

through the hard times and don’t just stick around for the good times.

I also think it is important especially during harvest time to thank our agricultural community for all the hard work they do to put food on our tables. I have learned over the years that farming isn’t just a job it is a way of life and sometimes that way of life is a lot harder than one may think. A good harvest is dependent on near perfect conditions and lets’ face it those conditions are out of their hands (just look at the terrible weather we had in September). Farming is a labour of love I think, and it certainly isn’t for everyone.

The Vermilion Voice would like to take this opportunity to say Thank You to our firefighters and agricultural community for your hard work and dedication!

Kitscoty Arrest Two After Suspicious Vehicle Reported Kitscoty RCMP Submitted

Kitscoty, Alberta – O n O c t. 2, 2018 at ap proxim ately 3:3 0 p.m., Kitscoty RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the area of Range Road 20 and Township Road 522.

A vehicle and witnesses advised the

truck drove through a ditch and fence.

Two suspects then fled the vehicle on foot.

Kitscoty RCMP along with Lloydminster RCMP Police Dog Services (PDS) arrived on scene and the suspects were arrested a short time later. One suspect was transported to hospital for minor injuries and released back into police custody.

This has been one of the coldest and most trying harvests.

The lack of sunshine and the cold temperatures are making it extremely difficult for the grain to dry in the field. need is lots of sunshine, for all the farmers, all across the prairies. I have cooked far less meals to go out to the fields this year, as time is at such a premium, the men don’t want to stop to eat but prefer food they can eat while on the go, like sandwiches, raw vegetables, banana bread, and cookies. I have still been cooking stews and baking pies, but that is only for times when they come in to eat, because the grain is to “tough” to combine. For those that don’t farm, “tough” generally refers to a time at night when the dew falls and the grain begins to plug up the combines. On nights when the dew does not fall or it is only very light we will combine until the wee hours of the morning or do an all nighter.

During the harvest, there are certain

foods that I associate with that time of year. This vegetable slaw is my modern take on an old favorite - cabbage everlasting salad. I have been working on a cabbage slaw recipe that eliminates all the unhealthy vegetable fats that are common to most commercial salad dressings and mayonnaises. Af ter several renditions, this is my favorite.

It is such an easy way to eat a lot of healthy vegetables. Every single ingredient in this salad has multiple health benefits from the vitamins, antioxidants, fibre and flavonoids. If you don’t have apple cider vinegar, you can use regular white vinegar, but the apple cider does have greater benefits. This salad recipe is a keeper.

Vegetable Slaw 6 cups shredded cabbage (1 bag)

1 cup grated carrot 1 cup finely chopped celery 2-3 tablespoons chopped onion 1/2 red pepper chopped Dressing 2 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon honey 2 teaspoons water 3/4 teaspoon sea salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1/2 teaspoon celery seed 1/ 2 te a s p o o n m u s t ar d s e e d (optional) In a glass or small bowl, combine all the dressing ingredients. Combine all the vegetables in a large salad bowl.

Pour the dressing on the salad and toss well.

This week marks the anniversary of rather interesting change taken in our household. At the end of last September, we joined the ranks of those who had for whatever reason ‘cut the cable.’

This was just one form of that obviously…as our internet service is just another wire that comes to the house too (and not insignificant by any means) and telecommuting as I do from the home office one day a week I certainly can’t snip that one for good. At any rate, just getting TV satellite service cancelled was an ordeal in itself, like a dealer not being able to wrap their heads around someone actually giving up their addiction and just moving to another supplier instead. We even got charged an extra $1.50 fee for getting no service for another whole month, sort of an ‘Ok, you cancelled…but pay us this because we’re not sure you are

really sure?’ Just to string the relationship (and the account) along. By then I had little sympathy for them when they rather insistently asked to explain why.

Perhaps the chorus of Bruce Springsteen‘s ‘57 Channels and Nothing On’ song was going through my head when I curtly responded. Granted we had been with them for 16 years, however, I don’t usually have to justify grabbing a different brand of milk at a store…or developing lactose intolerance and just not drinking it. So television went back to the level of Over-The-Air, even prior in timeline to having one of those large 10 foot C-Band satellite dishes that were so commonly seen in the early 90’s…most long since taken down.

Yes…it’s funny what happens now when you step out of that electronics ‘hot tub’ that immerses us all so comfor tably and thoroughly 24/7 in emails, texts, tweets, notifications… the 800 channels or the unlimited any time you want Netflix streaming. I told my coworkers I wouldn’t have internet out at the farm to comment on

support issues on the Skype chat over the Thanksgiving weekend and Tim Horton’s Wi-Fi was a 40km drive away.

They looked at me like I grew horns, well those actually looking at me on not responding via incredulous emojis.

And maybe being amongst basically the last generation that grew up not having all those things around…I don’t have such a hard time visualizing what it means in not having them. That’s just the way it was…and it wasn’t actually so bad. I mean you would think stepping up to a buffet of food spread out like that every day wouldn’t be good for you…certainly not on your waist line.

I’d argue the immersion level in that universe is not good for any of us and we are seeing repercussions of it all over the place. We just don’t want to admit that we have a problem…a characteristic of an addict. An individual fix on this one not really so easy…the addiction is now societal. One of the first things you get back though is time and attention. Certainly I had some withdrawal going on at first…as OTA television no

A letter was brought forward from the Planning and Development committee recommending that council approve a development permit for a ser vice shop and placement of a fascia sign at 4520 Railway Avenue. The shop would be utilized by Wild Rows Pump and Compression Ltd., and Council-

lor McCullough felt it would be a good opportunity for the company to grow.

The Parks, Recreation and Culture notes were shared including news that the Outdoor Rink’s board coating was not UV rated and will have to be replaced. The committee is looking into the damage and options for how to best solve the issue.

A vote was carried for council to appoint Louis Genest as the acting clerk for the assessment review board until December 31, 2018.

When discussing cannabis disposal at the transfer site, Mayor McAuley

made a recommendation that time spent on such processes be recorded.

She noted that communities can collectively bring forward the recorded information to the province to vie for funding set aside federally that they are not receiving.

Event news includes a Digital Futures Symposium on October 16 – 18, hosted by the Town of Vermilion. Next year, FCSS will be celebrating 50 years in the community, and plan to host an event showcasing their programs, and highlighting their successes.

Maybe a step back on that front. But we patronized the librar y even more, some hobbies got time and attention they usually didn’t, and lots of small projects got done. After more than 2 years of procrastinating and stuff constantly underfoot, I even got my office/desk renovation done.

I can’t say that the diet year was uniformly followed by any means. But making an effort to acknowledge and manage it…meant that it wasn’t so nearly in complete control like it had been. So turn those notifications off once in a while, read a book, and don’t feel guilty in giving yourself permission occasionally to ‘Take an eBreak”.

We’re really not an accessible world when you look at it that way,” said Councillor Thompson who was interested in the concept of universal housing, and the possibility over the next 10 years of seeing crown land used for affordable housing.

Encouragement From A Library Board Member

Anna Giesbrecht has served as treasurer on the Vermilion Public Library Board for one year, and offered encouragement for members of the public to consider joining the team.

“Libraries have always been important as the impar ters and keepers of knowledge, and the record keepers of history and humanity. Being a part of the library board is a wonderful thing to do. Being involved makes you accountable and gives you a voice in your community for things right or wrong. I love interacting with the board and determining what would be best for Vermilion and area with the library as a focal point,” said Giesbrecht.

When asked if there is any difficulty to arrange attending meetings or what

happens if a person is unable to attend, she said, “Not often, but occasionally if there is a conflict due to other obligations, reports can be submitted in writing. I suggest just letting the manager know ahead of time so that he’s not holding the meeting for you.”

She went on to describe the role of library board members as a group who makes sure that the Vermilion Public Librar y is relevant now and for the future, as well as assisting the manager in his day to day jobs. When asked what library services are most valuable to the community (old and new) she said, “Books and history have always been priorities of the library. With technology being the wave of the future, and people unable to always access the technology they need; a bigger screen/ e-books/ etc., we enjoy being able to

It has been quite a year for our County Fire & Rescue teams.

Half-way through 2018, the hours of service had doubled over the entire previous year.

174 VOLUNTEERS in 8 Departments serving CVR plus 22 volunteers with Lloyd Rescue

To the end of August, 4,269 hours were spent responding to calls within the County.

Not all fire calls are equal, they can range from vehicles, bales, structure (house), wildland (bush), campfires, industrial shops, oilfield tank farms to false alarms.

After every fire that has a dollar loss an investigation must be completed to determine the cause and origin of the fire. If deemed suspicious, a full team of investigators need to be brought in to assist the local department. Investigations can take days and during this time someone has to remain on-site for scene security.

Along with our partners - the RCMP, EMS, and 911, we respond to medical first responses which can be: * falls * heart attacks * attempted suicides * motor vehicle and off road accidents * search and rescue * farm accidents * livestock (bucked off,pinned) * body recovery * assisting medical examiners with fatalities * setting up a landing zone for STARS. On behalf of Council, staff and myself, THANK YOU to all of our VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS from across the County.

Your commitment to the safety and protection of our community is second-to-none!

It is truly a humbling experience to work alongside of you. Second, a huge thank you to the FAMILIES of our firefighters - your sacrifice for the greater good is amazing and we thank you so much for supporting the firefighters so they can serve and protect!

Why did you decide to join the Department?

Dean: I was new to town and had met fellow members. It was good to be involved in the community and meet new people.

George: On October 26, 1996 we gathered the community as we saw the need for an organized department. From there I volunteered to be the Chief.

Merle: I wanted to give back a small portion of the care and kindness that my community has shown to my family and me.

Brad: I enjoy helping people wherever I can and was involved in other communities before moving here.

What has been your most rewarding /memorable call?

Dean: The Battle River plane crash, and the extrication.

What other community work do you do?

Basement Suites Require Special Fire Safety Knowledge

Submitted Plan t wo ways out so you’re prepared for an emergency Living in a basement suite comes with unique emergency preparedness considerations. Unlike their above-ground counterparts, basement suites typically only have one door in and out, so finding a safe second exit route is important.

While the home’s main floor may have a front and back door, you will likely need to rely on a window as your second means of evacuation.

This means you’ll need to make extra sure you can get out of at least one of your suite’s windows in a pinch. Being able to get out of the bedroom window is mandatory.

On the inside of the suite, it should be easy to get to the window without book cases, a TV or other obstacles partially blocking access to it. When an alarm goes off, you won’t have time to carefully unhook the cables from your TV and move it out of the way, nor will you have time to move a bookcase or relocate 12 potted plants. window, including large plants or shrubs. If there’s a window well, make sure you can still exit safely through the space without getting stuck. In the winter, the window area should be clear of snow, and the window should be able to open without being frozen shut.

You’re less likely to be injured while evacuating if you don’t have to break a window in order to exit through it. Any security devices such as bars installed on your window will need to be quickly and easily removed with no tools or special instructions in the event of a fire.

Try your plan before a fire instead of during an actual emergency.

While there must be a smoke alarm in your suite, not all basement suites will come equipped with a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm.

Given the additional risk posed by many homes having furnace rooms in the basement, buying and installing your own CO alarm is a good idea.

Look for units that plug directly into a wall outlet without any additional installation required (no screws or holes in the wall to risk your security deposit). You can then take the unit with you if you move.

CO alarms can be mounted at any height, as CO does not pool on the ground or rise to the ceiling.

These poisonous gases are responsible for most deaths and injuries in fires, not the actual flames.

Myth: Most fires happen in industrial buildings and wooded areas. Reality: Seven out of 10 fires in Canada start at home. Most fire fatalities occur in the home as well. More fires begin in the kitchen than in any other room in the home.

Myth: Leaving the kitchen briefly while food is cooking is safe. Reality: Most kitchen fires occur because people get distracted and leave their cooking unattended. It takes seconds for a pot or pan to spatter grease or overheat, creating a fire that can quickly spread. Cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires

and home fire injuries.

Myth: Most children know not to play with matches and lighters. Reality: Children are naturally curious, and this can be dangerous. Hundreds of children die or are seriously injured in fires each year in North America. Children are much more likely to be injured in a fire than adults and are often victims of their own curiosity.

Myth: Kids will instinctively run from fire and escape a burning house. Reality: When children see smoke or fire, they often try to hide instead of flee. Smoke can overcome a child quickly. Parents need to teach children fire safety and escape plans and practise with them regularly. Also test the smoke alarm with your children present so they can recognize the sound, as studies show this can help them wake up in a real emergency.

Submitted Electronics can pose a fire risk if they’re used or charged incorrectly The electronic gadgets in our lives have become so commonplace that we often forget they run on good, old-fashioned electricity, and that electricity can pose major risks when not used correctly.

Remember the following when using and charging your gizmos to stay safe while making the most of the tech in your life.

Buy certified chargers When buying things like phone or tablet chargers, check the device for a recognized Canadian certification mark. Common marks are from CSA, ULC and ETLc. These indicate that the device has passed Canadian testing standards, which may be more rigorous than those required in other coun-

tries. There are regular news reports of phone chargers starting fires in homes, but that’s not the only risk. If a charger is faulty, it can supply your phone or tablet with too much power, possibly damaging your device or causing it to overheat and catch fire. If you’ve spent $900 on a phone, invest in a certified charger.

Fray it ain’t so It can be tempting to keep using charging cables when they’re starting to come apart at the ends, fraying and exposing the wiring inside.

While a typical certified USB charger doesn’t supply a lot of electricity to a device, there’s still a risk that a frayed wire connecting to the device could cause a short within the charger itself.

And that’s how fires can start. Just as with other electrical cords or cables in

your home, fraying cables increase the chances of sparking.

Careful where you charge Tablets, laptops and phones often generate heat while their batteries are charging, so be careful where you put them when you plug them in. A hard, non-combustible surface is always the best place to charge a device, so don’t charge your phone on your bed, a sofa, a pillow or anything else that can sit flush against the device and prevent heat from escaping while it charges.

If anything does go wrong with your phone and it overheats while charging, you don’t want a fire to spread beyond the device itself.

Be extra careful with “waterproof� devices! All sorts of electronic gadgets bill themselves as being waterproof, but there are a few big caveats that

don’t make it into the ads. Don’t plug in a wet device, as water can make it into ports and will take time to dry out.

Similarly, the charger isn’t waterproof, so don’t get it wet. And never, ever use a waterproof device around water while it’s charging.

Worth repeating Remember: - Don’t tinker inside your electrical stuff to save a few bucks on the cost of repair. Take it to someone who knows what they’re doing. - Don’t remove the ground prong from a cord because the outlet you want to use it with doesn’t have a hole for the ground prong. The device is designed to work with that ground prong, and removing it creates completely unnecessary danger. - Only use your electrical devices for the manufacturer’s intended purpose. A toaster oven isn’t designed to heat your home.

‘The Highly Effective Driving Instructor’ Angela Mouly Reporter

Senior Instructor of the St. Paul Driving School, Volny Dorceus, has recently published a book titled, ‘The Highly Effective Driving Instructor.’

The book details the keys to successful driver training by examining personality types of customers and instructors, the value of a customer, and safety.

“When we talk to customers we have to understand them as well; whether it is students, parents, or anyone who calls you. Some people are easier to work with than others, and I feel this book will help other instructors better understand their clients,” said Dorceus.

Living in Canada for 17 years, he has been instructing drivers for 11 years, and also studied personality types in Atlanta, Georgia.

“That was the piece that was missing.

Whether at home or at work, understand-

ing people can help you work better with them; getting clues by the way they talk and act,” said Dorceus.

Over the years he’s done different jobs but enjoys working with people the most.

“There is more joy and energy in it; I am people oriented. I was born in Haiti, and there, we help each other out. I’ve found here that farmers help one another out, especially in the harvest season. We have a lot in common,” added Dorceus.

In his book, Dorceus describes how everyone prefers different learning methods and that some require more practice.

“Everybody is different, and you don’t want to offend them when you work with them. They don’t want to be that way they are just wired differently. Some people are cautious by nature; some learn first and show confidence after, and some show confidence first and aptitude after. When you have a dominant parent with a child that takes time to learn; it’s

not their fault, you just have to have patience and remind them. I have three children, and every one of them is wired differently.

The model I used is what I needed.

This book can assist with understanding how your child is wired. Once you understand them, it is easier to work with them.

You can use it for home, relationships, or any profession,” said Dorceus.

According to him, there aren’t enough instructors for rural areas in Alberta. If you don’t mind driving, have patience, and like helping people, Dorceus suggests that maybe you could help the industry.

“I never thought that I would be doing this, little own write a book about it,” said Dorceus.

The Lakeland Robotics Club (LRC) hosted its VEX IQ night on October 2, at Christina’s Home Furnishings and will continue running Tuesdays for the next several months.

“We have two different groups in the club. The first is our beginners club VEX IQ and the second is our senior club VEX EDR. We follow the curriculum outlined by VEX Robotics and compete at these events,” said coach Brandon Tupper.

Influenza Season

It happens every fall: influenza arrives in Alberta, and takes a serious toll on our communities. Influenza is a real threat. It’s also preventable.

Influenza immunization will be available, starting October 15, free of charge, to all Albertans six months of age and older.

It’s the single most effective means of reducing your risk of influenza, particularly when you receive it as early in the season as possible. By getting immunized early, you will give your body the opportunity to respond to immunization, and produce antibodies that will arm you against the influenza viruses you’ll be exposed to throughout the season.

Each year, influenza vaccine is developed to protect us against the strains of virus likely to circulate in our community.

Though vaccine effectiveness may vary, know this: last season, influenza vaccine cut Albertan’s risk of influenza by about 42%. Without immunization, Albertans were completely at risk. And we do mean all Albertans.

Although some individuals (pregnant women, seniors, children, and individuals with underlying health conditions or compromised immune systems) are at greater risk for severe complications,

without immunization, even healthy Albertans are at risk of severe illness and even death.

Grade 1 had a wonder ful time on their fall fun field trip to the Vermilion Provincial Park.

They explored nature and learned about seasonal changes, had fun at a craft station, and raked leaves to jump in. Once again we are so fortunate to have the Provincial Park in our community to learn from and enjoy.

We participated in Orange Shirt Day at VES on September 28. Right after announcements, all staff and students met in the gym to sit in a spiral circle. After acknowledging Treaty 6 territory and singing O’Canada, nine Grade 6 speakers talked to us about Orange Shirt Day and why we pay tribute to the residential school survivors by wearing orange shirts.

Creative Kids Club is a new lunch hour club at VES this year. It offers students the opportunity to try different ways of expressing themselves through the arts - photography, seasonal crafts, painting, flower baskets, crocheting, knitting, macrame, quilting, drama, music, yoga, creative

dance. There is no end to the things to be tried together. This is a fantastic way for staff and community members to connect and share their interests with students. Last week Mr. Haslehurst shared the secrets of photography and the kids got to try out tips with their own pictures. This week the Kids Club gets to choose from five different fall crafts that Mrs. Myshaniuk, Mrs. MacMillan, Ms. Birch, Mrs. Long and Mrs. Joa will lead.

The 22nd Annual BTPS Celebration Day took place on October 4. This was a chance to congratulate the service to students by our BTPS staff. Staff were recognized for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and this year 45 years of service. The following VES staff were formally recognized: Mrs. MacMillan, Ms. Pentelichuk, and Mrs. McLaughlin for 10 years of service, Ms. King and Mrs. Moses for 15 years, and Mrs. Tomkins for a whopping 30 years of service. Our staff also got to witness some of the fruits of our labors when we heard from the winners of the Superintendent’s Public Speaking competition.

October 5 is World Teachers’ Day. We

are pleased to join the voices around the world that celebrate the contributions that teachers make across the globe. This has been a designated day since 1994 and the Canadian Teachers’ Federation says this about it: “World Teachers’ Day represents a significant token of the awareness, understanding and appreciation displayed for the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development.”

The Knights of Columbus October St. Jerome’s Day and Pancake Breakfast is a fundraiser for our Welcoming was another Kindergarten. The Breakfast will be held tremendous success.

Thank you to all the hard work that our Student Council puts in to make these days amazing. Sadie Granigan and Maria Pottle lead the day with spirit cheers and announcing the events. The first group of students to be welcomed were the Grade four students. Each grade four student ran an obstacle course going over a chair, under a table, sorting skittles and breaking a balloon by sitting on it. Each child was rewarded with loud cheers and candy treats. New students from Grade 5 to 8 had to quickly stack cups and get an Oreo cookie from their forehead to mouth without using hands. Eating donuts smothered with whipped cream without hands was the challenge for the new students from grade 9-12. The Welcoming ended with Celebrating Orange Shirt Day. Photo submitted our four new staff members having to find skittles in a pie plate filled with whipped cream by only using their mouths.

Jerome’s held their Terry Fox Run. All grades participated in this event. Grade 7-12 students could choose to participate in the Regular Run or the Colour Run, while students kindergarten to grade six had a different route to follow. Those students, from grade 4-12, who ran the fastest gained points for their houses.

Orange Shirts were worn by many students and staff to show their support to those children who were greatly affected from Residential Schools. Many classrooms read stories, watched videos and held in depth discussions about what happened to Indigenous children when they attended these schools.

St. Jerome’s Awards Night was another huge success thanks to the excellent work done by these wonderful ladies; Terry Fraser, Denise Campbell, Shelly Corbiere, Lise Sader, Tina Zayac. Thank you to all the local businesses who generously support us every year to make this evening possible and to acknowledge the amazing students we have here at St. Jerome’s.

Our St. Jerome Fall Supper on Thursday, September 27, was fantastic! We were sold out for the night. Thank you to the parents, students, staff and friends of St. Jerome’s School for your many contributions. We could not be as successful without you donating items, cooking, volunteering to work a shift (or two), selling tickets, buying tickets and of course, cleaning up. Oops, almost forgot bringing all the items back to the school.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Also a tremendous thank you to Paulette Moir and Rolanda Beaudette for the countless hours they put in behind the scene.

Our Jr. Boys Volleyball teams are on fire as they continue to bring home hardware every weekend. The last weekend of September both of our Jr. Boy teams were in Kitscoty to participate in the “Cookie Tournament”. The Jr. “A” team won gold and a giant cookie to share as a bonus. The Jr. “B” team won bronze and were also rewarded with cookies. Way to go Spartans!

Remember the Book Fair arrives this week on Wednesday, October 10, and will be here until Monday, October 15. Family Night will take place on Thursday, October 11 from 3:30 - 7:00 pm.

“We Drive Hunger” started last week and will continue until the end of this week.

Lakeland’s Fall Semester Enrolment Topples 2017 Record

Lakeland College Submitted

An increase in students taking agricultural sciences and human services programs are factors in Lakeland College’s record fall semester class.

At the end of September there were 2,497 full-time and part-time students in Lakeland credit programming, an increase of 4.4 per cent from last year’s fall enrolment of 2,392 students. Of the students enrolled, 1,915 are full-time students and 582 are

part-time students.

There are 1,042 students at the Vermilion campus, 893 at the Lloydminster campus and 562 students in online and off-campus programs. This year’s class includes students from every province and territory in Canada but for Nunavut, as well as 17 other countries.

“This is the fifth consecutive year our fall enrolment has increased. A number of factors contributed to the growth including our efforts to align our programming and

delivery methods with student and industry needs, and our focus on creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment for all students,” says Mike Crowe, Lakeland’s vice president, academic and research.

He noted that there are more international students attending Lakeland this year than last year.

There are 533 students in agricultural sciences programs - 55 more students than last fall. Some of the growth can be attributed to the September opening of the new Animal Health Clinic at the Vermilion campus which allowed the college to increase the intake in the animal health technology program from 42 to 72 students.

Growth in the number of online students in early learning and child care and other human services programs also contributed to the increase. Enrolment in university transfer, business, environmental sciences, energy, and trades and technology is similar to last year.

It’s projected that Lakeland will serve more than 7,000 credit and non-credit students by the end of the academic year in June 2019. There are various start dates throughout the year for apprenticeship technical training, emergency services, human services, renewable energy and conservation, university transfer, business and other programs. Continuing education programs and courses also have different start dates.

Established in 1913, Lakeland College is a place of possibility that serves more than 7,000 students every year at its campuses in Vermilion, Alta., and Lloydminster, Alta./ Sask., and through online and off-site programs and courses. Lakeland offers programming in the areas of agricultural sciences, business, energy, environmental sciences, fire and emergency services, health and wellness, human services, interior design technology, trades and technology, and university transfer.
