Darrel Howell, United Conservative Party Nomination Contestant, held an Open House at the Vermilion Senior’s Centre on September 26.

Howell’s platform states, “I believe the government should: provide the framework that will support the robust economy that is necessary to provide jobs and social programs, ensure that government services are provided efficiently, and ensure that the vulnerable are supported and protected.”

Having lived in the area 30 years, Howell welcomed everyone and shared his personal and work background. He went on to discuss his political platform and answered questions from the audience.

Aside from a long history in the oilfield, Howell has chaired boards at Lakeland

College and is currently with the Lloydminster Regional Health Foundation. His involvement has seen communities set aside their differences and work together as a region; a skill he feels will be useful in the new constituency as well.

“Whoever is successful is going to have to look after the whole region,” said Howell who plans to continue hosting events around the constituency.

Howell feels he’s had a wonderful life living in Alberta (born and raised), but feels it has been because the province has been successful. He is concerned for people and said that if the social programs are going to continue, the government has to be more efficient in delivering services.

“If you ran your business like healthcare is run, you wouldn’t be in business very long, and it’s been that way for a long time.

As well, people are investing everywhere but in Alberta. We’re in a bit of a crisis here

in the province, and I get the sense that people in the constituency really want to be part of the government,” said Howell.

He is also concerned for education in Alberta and has been for quite some time.

Speaking to the argument that children are losing their resiliency, he said that if our children become uncompetitive that it’s not beneficial in the long run.

“You need to experience some failure in order to succeed,” said Howell.

Howell went on to discuss other audience concerns including the carbon tax, pipelines, NAFTA, and receiving clarity from government on how they will achieve their goals.

Vermilion Cyclist Competing At World Championships

Vermilion’s Alison Jackson competed for Canada at the UCI Road World Championships in Innsbruck Tirol, Austria on September 29.

The race course included a route of 156.2km, with 2,413 meters of elevation gain.

“Loads of climbing means the race will be hard. This is the World Championships!

The very best from every country are here to compete. It is of the highest level,” said Jackson prior to the competition.

The week of world championship races will host over 1,000 athletes in Austria’s biggest summer sport event ever held.

Jackson has been training all year for this race and is very excited to be representing Canada.

“The race course is in a beautiful setting.

Innsbruck is nestled in a valley between high rocky peaks and mountains; very picturesque. This is a very big race, and really important for Canada to show the world that we are competitive in this sport. It is always an honour to be selected to represent Canada as one of the top athletes in the country. I love wearing the maple leaf, and I’m looking forward to doing my best in my role for Team Canada!” said Jackson who was eager to race in the heart of the Alps.

Throughout the year, Jackson races at the highest level of women’s cycling which is called the Women’s World Tour (WWT) and is a calendar of events held all over the world: Europe, Asia, and North America.

This is her fourth year racing professionally.

Previously, she spent two years racing in North America, and last year raced for an Italian team. Jackson was the first alternate

for team Canada during the Rio Olympics, and already has a goal set to attend the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Competing with the best in the world, Jackson still remembers her early athletic life in Vermilion.

“Vermilion is still home. It is where my mail is sent and I still pick up a few hours working on my parent’s farm south of town.

My family has always believed in me, that I could do anything that I worked hard for, so I have believed it as well and put it into practice with my cycling career.

Cycling has taught me to be adaptable. This sport and the lifestyle required to live on the road for it means you have to be ready to adapt to changes in schedule, travel, injury, success and disappointments.

J.R. Robson And VES Terry Fox Run

J.R. Robson School (J.R.) and Vermilion Elementary School teamed up this year gathering at VES to take part in the Terry Fox Run on September 26.

Approximately 500 students and staff members participated, and enjoyed the comradery of watching a video and walking or running together.

“I’m super excited with VES and J.R. coming together this year in support of the Terry Fox Run. This is an awesome opportunity for students to see leadership from others and realize that they can make a dif ference in the fight against cancer. Our VES Spirit Team helped promote it as a service project of theirs,” said VES teacher, Adrienne Joa. During the video, students were reminded that Terry Fox was diagnosed at age 18, and after spending a year and a half on chemotherapy, he began his coast to coast run. The video shared that he ran 42 kilometers every day (the length of a full marathon) through wind, rain, sleet, and snow.

October 1 - 7 is National Newspaper Week and this year’s theme is “Now More Than Ever.’ You may be asking yourself why newspapers matter “Now More Than Ever’ well, the first thing that comes to mind is the horrendous increase in fake news. Fake news is plaguing the internet, and there is nothing that bugs me more than reading a headline only to discover it is a load of hogwash. It is also amazing how many people can’t tell FAKE news from REAL news; I see it every day when someone shares a post that is obviously fake news.

I don’t quite understand why anyone who considers theirself a journalist would ever partake in producing an article that is full of false and misleading information.

I for one take more pride in my work and myself to ever stoop low enough to write FAKE NEWS. A real journalist who works for a local newspaper or other media outlet is going to confirm the facts and make sure it correct.

Second, most people feel as though newspapers are becoming a thing of the past, well that is certainly far from the truth.

Nine out of ten Canadians read some form of news that was originally generated in a newspaper!

Dear Editor I’m at it again! Before laying out my concerns, I wish to express my disappointment in the rain at the wrong time of year -but then there are beautiful colours on the leaves this autumn. Too bad Mother Nature can’t get it ALL RIGHT. We only have to look at the U.S. and their plight with hurricane Florence. So Far, western Canada has it quite a bit better without such massive destruction.

One more news flash. Previously I admonished our Town Council about developing a third Brennan subdivision. Some Vermilionites may think this is unfair to consider another subdivision as an unnecessary expense. If you disagree with me, please take the time to drive through the existing Brennan subdivision and COUNT THE NUMBER of empty lots. Granted someone may own some but there are still enough lots to build new homes.

Okay! What’s my beef. In Sept 11, 2018, Vermilion Voice paper I read the Town Council report with immediate ALARM. You ask Why? The council is starting to FLIRT with the idea of AGAIN spending mega dollars on another white albatross.

Community Journalism Matters -Now More Than Ever

Third, newspapers in small town living will always be one of the most important resources you can put your hands on to discover information concerning the town you live in. How often have you ever seen a social media giant such as Facebook come to cover your town council meeting? How many times have someone from Google come to cover your child’s dance recital or soccer game? And if they did, do you think they care about what happens in your community? Never and I think not!

Running a newspaper is not a cheap business to be in, the cost of producing a newspaper is expensive; news gatherers, graphic designers, and other necessary staff do enjoy receiving a paycheque and all the other expenses incurred have to be looked after. When a newspaper publishes a FREE paper, the revenue has to come from somewhere, and that is in the form of advertising.

Many advertisers nowadays think they can toss all their eggs in one basket to spread the word of their events, sales, services, and products. While I do agree that social media can be a somewhat effective means of informing the public it is however not the most trusted. Most consumers are wary of online advertising.

Why may you ask? The answer is simple and consists of one word ‘Scammers.”

Everywhere you turn on the internet, or

social media someone is trying to scam you out of your hard earned dollars.

Another reason why it isn’t a fabulous idea to rely completely on social media advertising is that not everyone has the internet and utilizes Social Media!” Another thing to remember when it comes to advertising your business on social media is that it will only reach the audience who knows how to find you. If they are someone like me, who is not a technical genius they will never know you exist unless someone tells them exactly how to find you.

Not that long ago I did a poll to find out how our readers would prefer to receive our paper whether it be print only, print and online or just online. I had a mix of responses from the elderly, middle-aged and the younger generations responding and surprising to me the majority wanted their paper to be either print only or the combination of print and online. I had quite a few who personally came into the office and said that if we were to go to online only, we would lose them as readers as they had no intention of ever becoming an internet user, especially in the social media world.

Advertising on social media at the moment can be either free or paid, but I can pretty much guarantee that once everyone starts putting their eggs in the social media frenzy it won’t be free forever,

spending $24,850 to be paid to a company that would advise town council how they could spend money on the economic growth opportunities and ways to diversify the airport. Apparently, there is need to do some upgrading to the airport runway and the lighting system which would benefit the current airport users. I have no problem with these two requirements because the runway and lights are very essential for all pilots.

But talk about SCARY! The “Airport Master Plan” will encompass the provision of having fuel available for the pilots using the airport and quote from the Vermilion Voice, “providing bicycles for flyers that land in Vermilion, unique fly-in residential models, or potential businesses such as aircraft engineers or airplane sales.”

Holy smokes!!! Talk about fruitful imagination. Yes, Vermilion is a registered airport. This means that Town Council would be able to apply for grants from both the Provincial and Federal governments. This is all fine and dandy BUT how much would these grandiose ideas cost the Town? Is it not important to REMEMBER that the Town Council have to carry through the necessary waste treatment plant expenditures? Do we not remember that the population of Vermilion is only

4200 approximately. Seniors and young children are part of that number. Again, we are not Lloydminster with the large number of industrial and business taxpayers.

Do the Town Council members keep forgetting that they have to have cash available for the essential housekeeping costs of keeping the town of Vermilion in good order. This action of the Town Council constantly coming up with grandiose ideas that cost MEGA DOLLARS frustrates me to end. It should do likewise for other taxpaying citizens.

Len and I have tried for the past ten years to have the town sidewalk problem, that affects the school children walking to school fixed so that NO ONE would slip, fall and break some part of their body. Some of the past mayors or public works managers have agreed that a major repair must be done as soon as possible to this problem, BUT nothing has ever happened. The last time that I talked with the Public Works manager I was told that there are at least 1800 similar problems in Vermilion and that there were no funds to address this problem. Boy does this kind of flippant rhetoric make me furious. In the past 2-3 years, town council have approved purchase of BRAND NEW town vehicles without any problem. But I’m being told that I better not

News and newspapers are important in everyone lives, it’s how we learn about what is going on around us and in other parts of the world. With all the political hoopla that is happening between the Canadian government and the U.S. government ‘Now More Than Ever’ no one wants to read the FAKE news and be misinformed, they want to read real news written by a credible journalist. Besides all the political stuff everyone enjoys seeing their events covered by the newspaper and no matter who you are you like to see your picture or your childs picture in a printed newspaper.

In a nutshell, your community newspaper is the one that cares about your business, it is the one who cares about your events, it is the one who will take the time to go out in the bitter Canadian winter just take your picture and it’s the one that will always be around through thick and thin.

You can’t say that about the social media world.

NAG to have the cement lifted by putting new sidewalk sections so that no one falls and hurts themselves. Len and I have cleaned the snow as soon as possible and we have used our own cement salt to keep the accumulating ice to a minimum. The ice forms from the melting snow from the town boulevard. As we are getting much older, it is extra work. When will we see a resolution to this problem?

Listen up Vermilionites. Let’s inform town council to try harder to be more selective and prudent in carrying out all the administrative and public works for Vermilion.

So feel free to phone me with only your first name and area of where you live, eg, mine is east -central. Or it might be east -north, west- hospital, south side, Brennan subdivision and so on. If you agree somewhat with what I have written in this letter, then let the town council see that there is need for improvement in the execution of their municipal government mandate.

We a r e t r y i n g t o get some combining in, but the cold weather is making the crops too tough to combine. It is cold outside, so It’s time to do some baking to have on hand for our crew of har ve ster s. T hi s banana bread recipe makes enough for two loaves, one to eat and one to freeze for later.

It is a good way to use up some overripe bananas. If you have overripe bananas and no time to use them up, you can pop them into the freezer, peel and all, to be used later for loaves and muffins. This recipe can be cut in half for one loaf with excellent results.

This is a well-tested recipe that makes great banana loafs every time.

½ cup butter toothpick inserted into the middle of ¼ cup canola or light olive oil the loaf comes out clean (without raw 1 cup brown sugar (can be reduced batter). Serve warm and buttered, or to cool and slice to serve plain or with 3/4 cup) jam, nut butters and various cheeses.

2 eggs Bananas, especially a little on the 3 cups flour (can be barley, whole green side, contain natural prebiotwheat, all-purpose or a mixture of i c s t hat hel p u s a b sor b nutr ient s, different flours) such as calcium, by producing diges1 teaspoon salt tive enzymes. A banana and a dairy 2 teaspoons baking powder product are a good combination to eat 2 teaspoons baking soda together for increased protection from 6 ripe or overripe bananas (mashed) ulcers and increased calcium absorp1 cup chopped walnuts (optional) Preheat oven to 325degrees. Cream together the butter, oil and sugar. Beat in the eggs and then the bananas.

Without stirring add the flour, sprinkle the baking powder, baking soda and salt over the flour. Stir until blended.

Pour into 2 greased loaf pans, you can use butter, canola oil or an oil spray and bake for 70 minutes, or until a

Lloydminster, AB: On September 21, 2018 Lloydminster RCMP General Investigation Section executed a search warrant at a residence located in the 3000 block of 56 Avenue in Lloydminster, Alberta.

As a result of this search warrant RCMP seized a printer, laptop, pre-cut security strips from $5.00 and $10.00 Canadian bills and photocopies of $5.00, $10.00, $50.00 and $100.00 Canadian bills.

Four people were arrested in the resi-

dence, 2 male adults and 2 female youths.

One of the males, 32 year old Ryan Bain of Lloydminster, was charged with three counts of unlawfully making counterfeit money and one count of having possession of counterfeit money.

Bain was released from custody on $3000.00 no cash Recognizance and is made his first court appearance in Lloydminster Alberta Provincial Court on September 25, 2018. His next scheduled court appearance is October 16, 2018 in Alberta Provincial Court.

Playing Those Outdoor Games

So it’s a month into the new school year for my kids and the routines that you do eventually have to as a family get into are finally starting to settle back in. Lunches being made, busses being met, evenings being scheduled, bed times being challenged…and stories from what happened at school being told.

The two youngest are at a different school this year so the adaptation to new situations and classmates is certainly part of the telling, but I suppose one of the things I would pay specific attention to, because it is what I most remember about my school years, is what games they are playing during recess and at lunch hour.

It’s funny how that goes but I could probably bring up specific occasions of games and things that happened on the school-

yard with my classmates now and they could remember the details 30 odd years later it like it was yesterday (at least one of which has been retold in this column previously). The games themselves are at issue though…because they say a lot about a point in time and how kids learn how to deal with each other. I’m sure most schoolyards now some of the games that are going on might look similar to what I recall…but there are some that were passed down from older kids to us a bit like heirlooms…I suppose in the terms of beating you at them (as a newbie) publicly and thoroughly to both teach you the game and remind you they were in fact usually better in size, experience, etc. Always a bigger fish as they say and back then for the most part you swallowed the lesson, after a few tears perhaps, and later took it all in stride.

On the way home from work this week there was an adult literacy based free

book giveaway in the Churchill Station and in the few brief minutes I had to look came away with a soft cover copy of a pictorial guide to ‘Outdoor Games’ circa 1974… the year I started Grade 1 at Woodvale school. The games in it and the haircuts and attire of those in the pictures I well remember…even a picture of a boy playing tag football in a Boston Bruins jersey, as by 1974 every kid in elementary school wanted to be Bobby Orr. I seem to remember being attired identically at times playing tag (and occasionally descending into tackle) football almost every day in the fall in the grass field across the road from the current Senior’s Centre. We were all pretending to be Edmonton Eskimos at the time (our role models in the midst of their 5 Grey Cup run: I was always Tommy Scott BTW, my classmates all acquiring their own Eskimo player identity off the roster). I’m sure some of the games we played then and after school have

changed to other things, the heroes and role models have changed too. But the more that time passes and I’ve thought about what we learned when we played in relation to what I hear now…I’m a bit frustrated. It was never idyllic…but life is a hard teacher. Lessons learned and fun gained from the rough and tumble play, with the pick up games of touch football or dodgeball, were some of the best ones.

I never cared much for skateboarding back then because we mostly had gravel everywhere to deal with…but I have come to agree with the thoughts of Canadian author and psychologist Jordan Peterson on his rule around not interfering with kid’s skateboarding…and in essence their outdoor play. I try to remember that and just watch as my youngest hangs upside down on the monkey bars. You have to master danger and uncertainty to be competent later at much of anything. You might as well do it playing.

Shannon Stubbs Recognizes The Life Of Edgar Corbiere

Mrs. Shannon Stubbs (Lakeland, CPC): Mr. Speaker, I rise to recognize the life of Edgar Corbière, who passed

away in April. He turned his family’s personal struggle into an enduring legacy of compassion and support for others. This summer marked the 20th annual “Haying in the 30s”event, which has supported more than 5,000 people in the Lakeland region in their fight against cancer.

A core board and group of 300 volun-

teers work all year round to put on a free two day re-enactment of rural life and hay harvesting in the 1930s. Thousands of Albertans make it their annual family trip. Every penny donated there and by others is given to cancer patients and their families for medical bills, travel and parking costs, and other expenses not covered by insurance. Haying in the 30s

currently supports 40 people a month.

Scheer Lays Out Plan To Fix Trudeau’s Pipeline Failures

St. Jerome’s Fall Supper

Approximately 760 people attended the St. Jerome’s School Fall Supper held at the Vermilion Regional Centre on September 27.

Principal, Allan Chase said, “We love the event because it involves our entire school community. Parents, staff, and children prepare the food, and many enjoy visiting. It is a good fundraiser for extracurricular activities, special

projects, and school improvements in general.

The Regional Centre was decorated with a large display of autumn crafts handmade by students, as well as a ceiling full of elaborate swags, lanterns, and leaves. Throughout the two sittings, the community enjoyed being able to socialize with one another, enjoy a delicious meal, and help support the school.

In response to the meal, Judy Zeller said, “It was fabulous!”

(The families who never got to hold and those that held and had to let them go.)

ATB Celebrates 80 Years

Customers gathered to help celebrate at Vermilion ATB as they hosted an 80th Anniversar y event to show how long Treasur y Branches have been serving Alberta.

The first ATB was established in Rocky Mountain House in 1938. Celebrations also took place in Dewberry, Islay, and Mannville this week.

Customers were invited to enjoy cake and refreshments, as well as to visit while listening to live music.

‘Elder In The Making’ – Film Premiere

In par tnership with The Learning Network and Lakeland College, ‘Elder In The Making’ was premiered at the Alumni Theatre in Vermilion on September 27.

The educational documentary film was also shown at high schools in Lloydminster on September 27, as well as in Marwayne on September 28. Lakeland College’s manager of indigenous support ser vices, Clint Chocan, introduced producer and director, Chris Hsiung, as well as The Learning Network’s Dan Nash.

“Coordinating professional development, it’s not often that we get to work in the community. ‘Elder In The Making’ is really a work of art, and has a very thought-provoking message,” said Nash.

As the film began, the audience was captivated as a Blackfoot aboriginal, and a Chinese newcomer embarked on a journey to rediscover their shared heritage. The film covers topics including

history, environment, health, humanity, and reconciliation. The audience was awed by the beautiful imagery and relationships in the film, paired with authentic music and a remarkable story. The film’s relevance moved them to laugh, become emotional, and applaud.

Of his first feature documentary film, Hsiung said that the experience was very rewarding and has been shared with audiences as far away as New Zealand. Along with its own curriculum material, the film has been shared in schools across Canada. It has also been recognized for its value to new recruits of the RCMP and newcomers to Canada.

Vermilion Elementary School celebrated Orange Shirt Day on September 27.

According to http://www.orangeshirtday.org/, Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.

S t af f a n d s t u d e nt s g at h e r e d to commemorate the residential school experience, to witness and honour the healing journey of the survivors and their families, and to commit to the ongoing

process of reconciliation. Celebrating Orange Shirt Day helps to promote antiracism and anti-bullying and creates an opportunity for all Canadians to discuss their experiences and create bridges of reconciliation with one another.

In a previous School News article, Karen King said, “This day has been set aside to recognize the harm the residential school system did to children’s self-esteem and well-being. It is a day to demonstrate our commitment in ensuring that every child matters.

Forty-two years ago, Phyllis, a 6-yearold girl, was getting ready to go to school for the first time. Phyllis came from a

family that did not have a lot of money, but her grandma managed to save enough to buy her a new orange shirt for school. When she arrived at the residential school, they took her shirt away and made her wear a uniform. She never saw her shirt again. From that point on, the colour orange led Phyllis to believe that her feelings did not matter and that

no one cared; she felt like she was worth nothing.

We will be learning about the 150,000 plus indigenous children, who from 18311996, attended residential schools. We will be educated on the history of residential schools in our country, so that we may learn from it, and know that every child matters.”

Tuesday, Septem ber 25 was a beautiful day to walk to the Holy Name Catholic C h u r c h fo r o u r f ir s t school mass of the year. Father Roger reminded us of the importance of hearing the Word of God and on that day we heard the shortest gospel reading of the year. Thank you to the staff members who helped out with the readings and to the grade five students for leading us in song as the choir. Father Roger also commended the students on their good listening and behaviour during mass. We are also thankful that Father Roger has started his weekly visits to our school this year.

Event Night will take place on Thursday, October 11 from 3:30 - 7 p.m. On Family Night you can enter for a free $50 in books - $25 for your family plus $25 for your child’s classroom!

The Grade 10 students along with Mr. MacMillan, Mrs. Williams and Mr. Martin headed out to Camp Encounter for their annual retreat on September 18 and 19.

They had two great days of team building, reflecting and building memories as a class. The students worked through an obstacle course as a team, walked through the “Mouse Trap” game, reflecting on their life journey and spent time getting to know each other just a little bit better.

Our Jr. High Volleyball teams had a very successful weekend in St. Paul on September 21 and 22. On Friday evening the Jr. “B” teams traveled to St. Paul, with both teams bringing home hardware. The Jr. Boys had great success and won bronze with their terrific team play throughout the tournament. The Jr. Girls also had a very successful tour-

nament leaving everything on the court winning Silver. Thank you to Mr. King and Mrs. Williams for sharing their time and talents with these young Spartan athletes. Saturday saw our Jr. “A” teams make the same trip. Congratulations to our Grade 9 Girls team for earning Bronze. Great work girls and thank you to Mr. Martin for your patient coaching skills. Our Jr. Boys were dynamic throughout the day and brought home the Gold medal defeating Mallaig in the finals. Great play, boys! Thank you to Mrs. Reiniger for sharing her skills and knowledge with this successful team.

The 2017-2018 Yearbook arrived last week and they look amazing. Thank you to Ms. Penner and her dedicated Yearbook staff for producing another fabulous book of memories. There are a few books left for sale for $40. If you are interested contact the school.

Our elementar y students had the opportunity to go for a fun fall swim this past week. All the students had a great time playing with their friends and

enjoying our town pool. We even had a couple of mermaids visit us. Thank you to the pool staff for the wonderful job they do.

We have a very busy week ahead of us. Wednesday, October 3rd is St. Jerome’s Day. Students are encouraged to wear our school colours red, white and black. At 12:30 the student body will gather in the gym for the “Welcoming”.

Grade 4 students will be welcomed into their houses; Cartier, Fraser or Mackenzie, which will be followed by all new students from grade five to twelve being welcomed and then new staff. At 2:00 we will be having the Terry Fox Colour Run. We are hoping to raise $2100 which is $5 for every student and staff member in our building. Murie and Carmen Meissner took 37 excited Grade 6 students to the Wainwright Communiplex on September 20 so they could take part in Squeak and Squawk. This day was designed to provide beginning band students from around BTPS with the opportunity to work with qualified clinicians to learn the basics of their band instrument. After spending two hours with their clinician, they were able to play a few songs in a mini concert. They enjoyed lunch together and a VIBE activity before heading back to VES. VES Cross country runners partook in two running events – one at the Vermilion Provincial Park and one at Riverdale.

A total of 17 runners attended Vermilion’s Autumn Pre-Provincial Cross Country Challenge on September 20. Our students competed against schools from near and far and did very well, with some finishing in the top six for their grade, earning them a ribbon. Some races had upwards of 40 participants. As well, we had 17 students attend Wainwright’s Runnin’ Riverdale XC Race on September 28. Results of this race were

O n S a t u r d ay, S e p t e m b e r 2 2 n d Mannville School partnered with the Mannville River view Golf Course to host our first annual WELL-come to Fall Walk /Run. This was a community event that was created to promote personal and family wellness of all ages in the beautiful setting of the golf course. Participants had the opportunity to participate in either a 2 km or 5km walk or run. Once completed the participants were invited to play games and enjoy the specials that the staff at the Riverview Golf Course prepared.

Despite the weather we had over 50 participants who braved the weather.

All proceeds from this event will be going back into the community to for future activities to promote spirit and provide within our community. We are already looking forward to next year!

We will have two Scholastic Book Fairs during the school year. Our fall fair is scheduled for October 23-30, and our spring fair will be April 2-9. Profits from these book fairs go directly into the Library Learning Commons by adding new books to our collection, providing author visits, and paying for general requirements.

Parents & visitors are able to park on 49 Avenue, as well as south of the crosswalk on 44 Street. Between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm, you may also park to the east of the school in the bus loading zone.

The staff parking lot is reserved for staff members. We ask that parents and visitors refrain from parking there. For safety reasons, students may not be dropped off or picked up in the parking lot.

Leah Beech is the VES Mental Health Professional (MHP). She is a Certified Canadian Counsellor. The MHP program is funded by the Classroom Improvement Fund (CIF) grant that was renewed for the 2018-2019 school year. Each school is assigned an MHP to provide mobile, longer-term counselling/thera-

peutic services to students with complex needs. Leah will also be available to provide and facilitate a number of other services and supports, including consultation with student multidisciplinary teams, student and/or staff group facilitation, school staff professional development, etc., with the approval from the Director of Inclusive Learning. Leah is also working with Kitscoty Elementary

School, Kitscoty High School, Marwayne Jubilee School, Dewberry School and Clandonald School, so she is only at VES a few days per month.

areas of your life and I think you may be surprised at how many wonderful things are happening in your life right now. You can be going through a difficult challenge and still practice gratitude, and you might be surprised at how wonderful that feels. Gratitude can really help us to put things into perspective. So as we enter the season of giving thanks, consider continuing to give thanks and develop a new year-round gratitude practice.

INGREDIENTS (Makes approximately 3 cups) • 3 medium-sized red beets • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts • 1/2 cup vegetable oil • 2 garlic cloves, chopped • 2 tbsps. lemon juice • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese • Salt and pepper

4. Bake for approximately 60 to 70 minutes, until nice and tender.

5. Peel the beets and set aside to cool.

6. In a small, non-stick pan, grill the chopped walnuts in a bit of oil for two to three minutes, then set aside.

7. Place all of the ingredients in a mixer and blend until you obtain a smooth purée (add a bit of water if necessary).

8. Season with salt and pepper to taste, garnish with chopped walnuts, and presto!

2. Rinse, tail and quarter the beets.

3. Wrap the beets in aluminum foil.

5 Skills You Need For The Jobs Of Tomorrow

(NC) Canada is undergoing a major shift from a jobs economy to a skills economy, and our young people could be at risk of being left behind. Fortunately, a new report looks into the way we’ll all need to change to keep up.

“An assessment of 20,0 0 0 skills rankings across 300 occupations and 2.4 million expec ted job openings shows an increased demand for foundational skills,” states the 2018 RBC Economics Report – Humans Wanted.

But what exactly does that mean?

Here’s a rundown on these important “human skills”.

Critical thinking. The risk of automation is high for jobs that require repetition, like data entry and even some data analysis. However, critical thinking — the ability to make strong human

judgements based on that data — is still an invaluable skill. There are a lot of traits that feed into the skill as well, including strong empathy, perception and reasoning.

Coordination. Understanding that wo r k p l a c e s s u c c e e d w h e n ever yone works together in harmony can be one of the strongest ways to add value. Experience Gained In Lopsided Loss

When the other team lights up the scoreboard and you don’t, you have to look for positives instead of points.

Such was the lot for Marauder football last Thursday when they hosted the Assumption Crusaders.

The Marauders dressed 11, while the Cold Lake team fielded 19. Along with being fewer in numbers the Marauders also gave up several inches in height and many pounds of weight to their opposition. So, it was much easier for the

Crusaders defence to get in the face of Ashton Slootweg and Zach Bodie when they went back to pass.

Slootweg started the game as the Marauders pivot. It was his first game experience running the offense. Bodie took over in the second quarter after Slootweg was hit hard and had to be helped off the field. They shared duties in the second half giving both rookies more game reps.

One of the positives was Slootweg’s 15 yard ramble up the middle. The draw play allowed him to find space and use his

speed for a first down.

Along with Ryland Fougere, both Bodie and Slootweg absorbed many tag team and explosive tackles. As the game wore on, they continued to battle for yards and were finding more holes when they put plays into motion faster. Fougere also demonstrated quick feet and slipped out of the grasp of tacklers for big 20-yard gain in the third quarter.

Seth Mansfield, the only veteran Marauder on the field, contributed many tackles showing his less experienced teammates how to get it done.

Landyn Herzog was a defensive stand out. He had a quarterback sack and was

a constant presence in the Crusader backfield.

Punter Logan Tupper got one long kick away over the head of the Crusaders return man.

The Marauders also took over the ball on downs twice. They were only penalized once in the game. And, they prevented two convert attempts including a blocked kick.

However, the final score was 64-0 for the visitors.

Marauder points after. This Friday, Oct 5, the Marauders will play under the lights in Provost. Game time is 7 p.m. The final regular season game is in Cold Lake.
