Cornerstone Co-op Vermilion Gar Bar hosted Fuel Good Day on September 18, raising $1022 for Vermilion Allied Arts.

Hundreds of customers attended, filling up their tanks in support of the local community group and enjoyed a free coffee throughout a portion of the day. Volunteers included staff, members of Allied Arts, community volunteers, and even the Mayor.

New Manager, Blair Molsberry, was thrilled with the support after only a few weeks in his new position. Molsberry recently moved from Humbolt, Saskatchewan and is looking forward to bringing his family to Vermilion because he thinks they will enjoy it.

“We did a lot of research and chose Vermilion because we like town life, and it is a well-kept community. I am looking forward to meeting our Co-op members as well as everyone else! I am also look-

ing forward to being involved in local sports organizations and community events as much as I can.

Fuel Good Day is Western Canada wide and raises funds and awareness for local groups. It’s great that Vermilion has an Allied Arts Council because not every town this size has a group to focus on bringing these types of entertainment to the community. Thank you to everyone for coming out and helping us to do the best we can,” said Molsberry.

Vermilion Allied Arts had executive Pat Calyniuk, and volunteer Sandra Sturton take part in Fuel Good Day. Calyniuk said that the proceeds would help to support their upcoming series because ticket prices do not begin to cover the cost of performers.

“We try to provide a wide array of music and shows for all ages. Wanting to be able to keep the ticket prices as cheap as we can, we are always looking for sponsors.

and we are very fortunate to have been sponsoring this day to us, and to the people selected. We are very grateful to them for who came out to support it,” said Calyniuk.

Allied Arts To Host New North Collective

The Vermilion Allied Ar ts will be hosting a performance by New North Collective on October 13, at 8 p.m. at Lakeland College’s Alumni Theatre.

The first show of the season will include ar tists from the Yukon, the North West Territories, and Greenland.

All of the members have successful individual music careers, but in 2015 they united to offer a show with contemporary and traditional views of the north highlighting both its land and people.

The New North Collective uses their geography and communities to influ-

ence their artistry showcasing a diversity of styles, language, and experience. Their wide array of skills and genres will include jazz, folk, new music, spoken word, and rock.

The group pushes musical boundaries but maintains a common goal to d i s c ar d t h e s ter e ot y p e s of t h e north and the people who live in its remote, rural communities. Combining current and traditional pieces, New North Collective is expected to bring a thought-provoking musical, and media arts experience to Vermilion.

The early frost and snow necessitated the picking of all the garden tomatoes. When that happens, they usually st ar t r ipening u p, mostly all at the same time. A favourite way to make the most of the tomatoes harvest is to make this quick and easy batch of tomato sauce for freezing. I pour the sauce in portioned containers for later use, in soups, lasagne, chili or cacciatore. The best part is that I can use this homemade tomato sauce during the winter, and enjoy the great taste of our garden tomatoes.

Another benefit of a homemade tomato sauce is that it has no artificial preservatives. I have also made oven slow roasted tomatoes, and the flavour is absolutely amazing, not to mention the lovely aroma of herbs, garlic and tomatoes fills the kitchen with the smell of something good to eat. Salsa is another recipe that you can use with your fresh garden tomatoes. If you didn’t have a garden, they should be

Tomatoes contain an alphabet soup of beneficial phyto-nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants. Studies have linked increased tomato consumptions with a decreased risk of prostate cancer, and a decreased risk of heart disease.

Fresh Garden Freezer Tomato Sauce 15 – 16 cups of tomatoes puree 2-3 tablespoons butter 3 onions, chopped 5 cloves of garlic 1 cup of finely chopped or grated carrot (optional) 1 cup finely chopped celery (optional) 1 tablespoon sea salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper In your large saucepan, melt the butter and sauté the onions and garlic. When they are nicely softened, remove and place in a bowl. Select ripe tomatoes, wash and remove the stem top. Process the tomatoes in a blender until puréed. I process 5 cups at a time in my blender. I have a small food processor that I use to finely chop the celery and the carrot. In you large saucepan, add all of the tomato puree and all

Vermilion, Alberta – In the early morning hours of August 30, 2018 a lone male entered the secure compound of the local John Deere dealership on 47 Avenue in Vermilion. The suspect stole a 2008 John Deere Gator model 620 XUV and used it to steal a 2013 John Deere model Z445 54 inch zero turn mower.

This break and enter and theft was captured on video and the investigation continues.

Pour the onion mixture into the pot with the rest of the ingredients. Bring to a soft boil and then simmer for 20 minutes to 2 hours, depending on how much you want to reduce the sauce. Allow to cool slightly before ladling into you containers for freezing. You can also recycle larger plastic yogurt or cottage cheese containers for freezing.

Wash and cut in half several medium or small sized ripe tomatoes. With the cut side of the tomatoes facing up, brush with the olive oil mixture, sprinkle with salt and pepper and bake for 2-3 hours (or until they start to wrinkle) at 275 degrees. They taste great with 2 hours of roasting, but with 3 hours, the flavors really develop and deepen into yummy awesomeness.

When the season gets to fall, and September in particular, thoug hts with yours truly become more akin to Christmas than they actually do for Christmas. There is no denying that thoughts like that would betray that I’m probably a hunter. I grew up around hunting, and trapping for that matter, from a very early age. It was both a tradition in the family and a respected skill: The original Wolters homestead and the farm happened to be in a place surrounded and abundant with wildlife, and a lot of the game that Dad provided by his hunting skill ended up keeping family belly’s full.

So by the time I was in my early teenage years, Dad had already introduced me to both gun safety and our first hunts together in pursuit of the Ruffed Grouse…or as we used to call them ‘Bush Partridges.’ In junior high school we had a class offering “Alberta Hunter Training & Conservation”

and from then on its manual was perused and followed like my hunter’s bible.

So many early fall days have included time spent trooping through brush and heavy cover with a gun in hand and a Labrador Retriever at heel, and this story about ten years ago one of them. At the time my Fox Red Labrador, Ali, was a pretty experienced retriever with a good nose for a scent that liked Upland hunting perhaps even more than waterfowling, but a veteran of many hunts nonetheless and almost human in her ability to work ground with me using even non-verbal cues. So on this dry and somewhat breezy day, off we went to head for a particularly productive bird spot since childhood, a small oval-shaped dry slough just east over the coulee edge within the forest rimming that coulee side, which would fill with water each spring and slowly lose its water until dry bottomed in fall. lane in the trail and trees at the south end waiting for Ali to return to my side before continuing. She had cut back around the north end and out of sight briefly, apparently picking up a scent and off in hot pursuit. Now the leaves were already turned in color and dry but still mostly on the trees; the wind was just high enough in its noise that the rustling of the leaves had been completely masking whatever noise we had made getting to where we were. Looking NE, I finally spotted Ali trotting…but hearing muffled but rapidly nearing footfalls. Suddenly a young 3x3 whitetail buck, in maximum flight down the trail as only they can do, was upon me and none the wiser that I was standing motionless, dressed in camouflage, and directly in the middle of his path. Suddenly realizing my presence, with four hooves jammed sliding in full brake and rear end on the ground, he slid towards me until our heads met less than 6 inches apart…nose to nose. For several seconds, time literally stopped. As I watched his eyes narrow, felt his hot breath, and his body tense

and his head and horns tilt bracing to run me right over, his eyes rolled to the side to look over his right shoulder…and in an instant he flashed right past me on my left, me frozen in place and heart stopped. And here came Ali down the trail, the result of the deer’s returned pre-occupation with flight, returning to my side with a joyfully expression of “Did you SEE it?!? Did you SEE it?!?” I muttered several things quietly not worthy of print as the blood in my veins resumed moving again. And off we went.

Not every hunter is a ‘yahoo,’ but I’ll grant you they are around, unfortunately.

Not every hunting story by hunters is just about getting the ‘big game.’ Some are about getting to spend time with hunting brethren, or remembering how to listen to their five senses again, or being outdoors in nature away from job and responsibility.

It’s the reason I’ve hunted for close to 40 years, and remain content (mostly) if I do get nothing but memories. And one like this one…I didn’t get a bird…but an unrepeatable moment in time I will just never, ever, forget.

Upcoming St. Jerome’s Fundraisers

Staff and Students at St. Jerome’s School are excited about two upcoming fundraisers; their Terry Fox Run, and partnering with FCC for their Drive Away Hunger Campaign.

On October 3, at 2 p.m., students will head outdoors, acquiring points for their school houses and collaborating to raise funds for cancer research during their annual Terry Fox Run. The route will have the option of a detour for those wanting to participate in a colour run, with students or staff members donating $5. Pledge sheets will be sent home for students who wish to aid in the fundraising efforts.

Last year, the school received $1,186.50 in donations, and this year their goal is to raise over $2,000. To donate, you can visit http://www.terryfox.ca/StJeromeCatholicSchool.

“Cancer has touched everyone; if it’s not in your family, it may be someone our

family knows. What a great legacy Terry Fox has left for us! It’s great for us to be able to participate and be a part of it,” said Allan MacMillan, St. Jerome’s School’s Vice Principal.

MacMillan went on to say that new to the school this year will be the partnership with Vermilion Farm Credit Canada (FCC) during their Drive Away Hunger Campaign. From October 4-12, FCC will be supplying students with grocery bags, and families who are able or who choose to will be able to make a non-perishable food donation. As well, on October 10, the high school student council supported by staff members driving, will be canvassing Vermilion visiting as many people as they can with the number of volunteers that they have. They will come to you, or cash or food donations can be left at the school.

“Our student council is made up of really good children who want to make a difference in their school and their community.

The children are very excited, and we often

reference Luke 12:48 ‘To whom much is given, much is demanded.’ We’ve been pretty blessed on many levels, and this is an opportunity for us to give back.

We are really hoping that the community can jump behind us with support for these causes where there is a need.

Unfortunately, the reality is that hunger is still a need; with people having to choose between utilities and food. The nature of industries in Alberta is very cyclical, and whether oil or agriculture, economic stability is not felt equally across all industries.

We often say that we can’t do everything but we can do something, and because we can do something we are obligated to. All it will cost is our time,” said MacMillan.

In conclusion, grade 9 student council member, Mia Westergaard, noted that the students are excited about these projects because they are looking forward to new experiences.

Rusty Bit Horse Show

Equine enthusiasts gathered at the Lakeland College Arena as the Vermilion Light Horse 4-H Club hosted the 49th Annual Rusty Bit Horse Show and Gymkhana from September 22-23.

A selection of classes included Western and English two-way versatility, pleasure, equitation, and showmanship, pairs, and an obstacle course. Faye Stone travelled from Wainwright to judge the event. New this year were driving classes.

The cold weather and inches of snow on the ground moved the event indoors, but it didn’t dull the excitement of the young riders. Participants encouraged one another throughout the event.

“I really enjoy this event because it is a fun show, and not super competitive. This year, it was a way for me to start a young horse doing show events,” said six-year member, Emily Elder.

Tough Going For Marauders In Camrose

With the Marauders out of players who had any reps in the offensive backfield, the team decided to take a knee on the second half of their game last week in Camrose.

Discretion outweighed valour as the team decided to prevent any more injury and be able to field a team for the next game.

One of the casualties was Zach Bodie who took his first snap as quarterback at the Harry Andreassen Field in his second ever football game. Twice hits on Bodie were flagged as unnecessary roughness.

The second was when he knelt in the endzone to concede a safety touch with less than three minutes left in the half.

The other was veteran Cam Bartley who

moved into the backfield for the second game. Already protecting his right arm, a tackle at the line of scrimmage required teammates to help him off the field.

The more experienced Royals plowed through a rookie line to often to wrap up ball carriers with short gains and gave Logan Tupper little to no time to punt.

Seth Mansfield played both ways and also ran back most of the kickoffs. There were several as the Royals scored eight touchdowns, five in the first quarter. The Royals place kicker converted all but one of them for a 62-0 score. Kicked converts are worth two points.

The game was another learning experience for the Marauders whose roster includes five grade nines. Up next is Assumption from Cold Lake on September 27 at J.R. Robson. Game time is 5 pm. Photos submitted

‘Prairie Sunset: A Story Of Change’

Aut h or, D i o n M ana st yr s k i, tr avelled through Vermilion on Septemb er 11, s h ar i n g h i s b o o k , ‘ Pr a ir i e Sunset: A Story of Change’. The fine art book shines a spotlight on the past 150 years of rural prairie history, and includes Manastyrski’s photography from across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, as well as government archives, and quotes from over 70 prairie people.

“I’ve never seen anything like this book and in 2003, I began making eight trips across the three prairie provinces photographing old farm buildings and artifacts. They are disappearing and I wanted to capture as much of it as I could,” said Manastyrski.

The book is geared towards people as a keepsake to pass down through

generations. Wanting to create a feeling for his readers Manastyrski created a compilation of his interview subjects and said, “I grew up on a farm and thought I had heard it all until I did this!”

Many of the people he spoke to only brought simple tools, and what they did to survive the early years amazed him.

His book is a tribute to the homesteaders and what arose from that.

In his epilogue, Manastyrski describes the beauty of prairie life and why family farms are so important.

Eileen Taylor has become the 6th person to enter the United Conservative Party nomination contest for the new Vermilion-Lloydminster-Wainwright electoral riding.

Eileen is a former teacher and the wife of retiring Battle River-Wainwright UCP MLA Wes Taylor. Wes Taylor announced in May 2018 that he would not be seeking re-election because he is focusing on recovering from open heart surgery. Wes and Eileen live in Wainwright and, in addition to bringing up three children, Eileen has had a 23 year career as a teacher, been a successful Realtor and currently, along with her husband, own and operate businesses in Wainwright.

Having been married to a MLA, Eileen has seen first-hand the commitment

required. She said “Nothing can fully prepare a person for the high tempo and multi-faceted role of an MLA, but after being encouraged to run by constituents from every corner of this riding, Eileen decided that she was up to the challenge, and was willing to make the necessary sacrifices to rebuild Alberta and bring back the Alberta Advantage. “I want my children and grandchildren to grow up in a province of opportunity.”

Eileen is in fighting mood when it comes to the damage inflicted on Albertans by the current government. She said: “Bill 6 (Farmers) and Bill 20 (Carbon Tax) are thinly disguised attacks on Albertans and the Albertan way of life. Albertans are able to withstand the challenges coming at them from world markets, but it is the attacks from the ideology of our own government that has hurt Albertans most.

By the NDP’s own projections we will be saddled with over $90 Billion Dollars in debt by 2023 while paying $4 billion annually in interest payments.”

about education. “During my teaching career I witnessed first-hand the destruction of an Education system that was once ranked #2 in the world. Fundamental education standards must be re-introduced. This, coupled with the teaching of critical thinking skills and financial literacy will produce young adults able to function effectively in a modern society”. She believes we must halt the implementation of the new curriculum and review it in order to increase emphasis on basic essentials such as literacy and numeracy.

The college signed memorandum of understandings (MOUs) with the Western Region Coastal Foundation (WRCF) and Seaweld Engineering to develop training, and academic and research activities for Ghanaian training and educational facilities.

“As an established continuing education provider in Canada, these agreements are in line with our goal to leverage our courses and programs to provide training in the oil and gas sector, globally” says Ben Sey, dean of Lakeland’s School of Energy.

Ear lier t hi s year, L akelan d was contacted by CPI Training, a Canadian company that focuses on corporate and industrial training in different parts of the world. CPI was contracted by the WRCF to find institutions that could help develop training programs for Ghana’s oil and gas sector. Sey traveled to Ghana to tour its facilities and institutions, and start training conversations with the West African country.

Lakeland will facilitate updates and develop educational programs related to its petroleum management and gas process operator programs for the Regional Maritime University (RMU) of Ghana, according to the MOU with Seaweld.

“The terms of the MOUs are broad enough to include other courses Lakeland has to offer. The agreements open up the possibility of developing various modules consisting of different Lakeland College courses and programs.”

Lakeland will also send an instructor to train Ghanaian instructors once these programs are introduced. These efforts have also earned Lakeland a seat at a national conference in October, where industry standards for training and certifications for the extractive industry in Ghana will be discussed. It is a great opportunity for Lakeland to be a part of this conversation and to offer its expertise on the international stage, says Sey. Established in 1913, Lakeland College is a place of possibility that serves more than 7,000 students every year at its campuses in Vermilion, Alta., and Lloydminster, Alta./Sask., and through online and off-site programs and courses. Lakeland offers programming in the areas of agricultural sciences, business, energy, environmental sciences, fire and emergency services, health and wellness, human services, interior design technology, trades and technology, and university transfer. Vermilion Hockey Player In Top Tier Of United Kingdom

Vermilion’s Jamie Crooks recently signed his first professional hockey deal with the Guildford Flames in England. They are part of the Elite Ice Hockey League, which is the top-tier of hockey in the United Kingdom.

Teams in the league are located in England, Scotland, Ireland and Whales.

Twenty-six-year-old Jamie was born and raised in Vermilion and attended St. Jerome’s School. He played his Tom Thumb, Atom and Peewee years with Vermilion Minor Hockey.

“Jamie was always very passionate about the game of hockey. It was always his favourite; his first passion. Children in Vermilion were very fortunate to have two indoor rinks available, so lots of ice time was accessible. Every winter the parents on Young Drive would get together and build a rink on two lots that were vacant at the time. It was well used by all of the children on the block and it was not uncommon for Jamie’s mom or myself to have to go round him and his older brother and sister up for events like supper, homework, or bedtime,” said Jamie’s father, Jim. Jamie played his two seasons of Bantam hockey in the Alberta Bantam AAA League with the Lloydminster Heat. He had success there making the All-star team and leading the league in scoring in his second season.

“Our children were very sports minded which was good because it meant they didn’t have as much time to get into trouble.

They also played baseball in the summer, and Jamie and his brother played in the Alberta Junior Golf Tour. Sports kept them active, and it taught them a lot about interacting. Their mother, Jacquie, spent a lot of time driving, and some weekends we had to enlist Grandma, Jane Mercer, to drive one of them.

Playing hockey both in Vermilion and in Lloydminster were both good experiences for Jamie. Hockey is all about coaches, and friends playing, and social gatherings,” said Jim. He continued to play one year of Midget AAA in Lloydminster before being drafted (at the age of 17) by the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League (WHL). He was then traded to the Chilliwack Bruins (who were owned by Brian Burke and Glen Sather) and played two seasons with them.

The team was sold to a group from Victoria and became the Victoria Royals where Jamie played two more seasons in the WHL. He was then scouted by the U of C, UBC, and other teams who wanted him to play, but Jamie chose the University of Alberta Golden Bears.

“He played a lot of good hockey! The thing about the Western Hockey League is that you get a full years’ scholarship to Canadian Universities for each year played.

Jamie went to the U of A playing five seasons with them while being enrolled in Kinesiology. He did well in the WHL but his best years were at U of A; they have a very strong program,” said Jim. Playing university hockey, Jamie won four West Canada Championships and three National Championships. After winning his last National Championship in the spring of 2018, Jamie was looking to play professional hockey in Europe.

According to Jim, he received offers from teams in Poland, Denmark, France, and the Guildford Flames of the British Elite League. SCHOOL NEWS Margaret McCormack Submitted

This week the Grade 1/2 class did a book study of “The Little Red Hen”. We read various versions of the text, took turns acting out the story, wrote letters to the Little Red Hen, and wrapped it up by baking a loaf of bread together. On Friday, we were invited by Mrs. Mercier to come and pick apples from her tree. It was loads of fun! Next week we look forward to making applesauce and using this experience to learn about sequencing our writing.

Congratulations to our Jr. A Boys are Gold medal winners! The Spartans defeated Bishop Lloyd in the final 25-21, 27-25! Wow! What exciting matches!

St. Jerome’s Annual Fall Supper is this Thursday. There are two settings: 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Advance tickets are available at the school office. This is St. Jerome’s main fundraiser and money from this supper supports a variety of activities that happen in our school throughout the year. This is a wonderful time to gather as a community and enjoy a meal together.

institutes in our community and surrounding communities. Father Roger asked all educators forward to place a special blessing upon them for the upcoming school year.

“Socks and Sandals” Day was celebrated by many students on Tuesday, October 18. Colourful socks, flip flops, knee highs, crocs, a variety of combination of socks and sandals were on display during the day. This was our first Spirit Day for the school year and there will be many more to come. Remember high school students, every time you participate in a Spirit Day you receive a Spirit Point.

The Graduating Class of 2019 are selling Mom’s Pantry again this year. Contact a graduating student or contact the school office if you need an order form or for more information. Orders will be accepted until October 31 and orders should be delivered by the end of November, just in time for Christmas baking. Thanks for your support!

St. Jerome’s will be participating in Orange Shirt Day on Monday, October 1.

On this day we will honour the memory of lives lost and persons abused within Residential Schools in Canada.

St. Jerome’s Day will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 3. Students and staff are encouraged to dress in school colours; red, black and white. In the afternoon grade four students, new grade 5-12 students, and new staff will be welcomed to St. Jerome’s with a variety of activities organized by Student Council.

This year St. Jerome’s will be hosting the Terry Fox Colour Run on Wednesday, October 3 at 2 p.m. We are hoping to raise $2100, which is $5 for each student and staff member in our building. The Terry Fox Foundation has a great reputation with 82 cents of every dollar raised going directly to cancer research. You can donate by visiting our school fundraising page: www. terryfox.ca/StJeromeCatholicSchool or by simply having your child bring $5 on or before October 3.

St. Jerome’s student, Amanda Collins, was sweltering in the Ottawa humidity, at a Sports and Fitness themed week, with Encounters Canada. Participants had the opportunity to start their adventure with dragon boating, wall-climbing, skiing, martial arts, Kin-Ball, Ultimate Frisbee and fitness boot camp, to name a few. They

heard from accomplished athletes, Olympians and fitness experts, and participated in discussions about ethics in the world of sports. “Meeting people from Vancouver, BC all the way to Prince Edward Island was such an incredible experience. The theme that I attended was sports and fitness, and I got to try so many new things like martial arts and ultimate frisbee. I also got the chance to visit some of the most amazing building like the Parliament, the War Museum, and even the Governor General’s house! I will never forget my experience in Ottawa, and I highly recommend going because it is truly a trip worth taking.”

The first School Council Meeting for this school year took place on September 17. Several parents gathered to learn about new and existing things happening at our school. The Family School Liaison (FSL) worker, Ms. Dawn Riley, and Mental Health Professional (MHP), Ms. Leah Beech, for VES introduced themselves and explained a bit about their roles. An update on our projected and actual student enrollment counts were shared as well as an update on our school budget for 2017/2018 and the current year. VES was granted a $40,000 breakfast grant by BTPS for this school year and our school coordinator is currently exploring creative ways to enhance our breakfast program. A brief discussion was

held on the many school clubs that are offered to students at VES. A special event that some students will be participating in this year is We Day at Roger’s Place in Edmonton on Oct 12. As well, our Grade 6 students are participating in Squeak and Squawk in Wainwright on Sept. 20. This music event involves students learning various things from clinicians as well as the opportunity to play their instruments with various other students from around BTPS. An update on the Tree Project and digital signage slated for VES was also provided.

Our school participates in the Accelerated Reader program for grades 2-6. Most of our collection is labelled according to the reading levels. This will help the students choose books to complete quizzes and earn points, prizes, and fun activities.

Grade 2 students are once again participating in a program called Roots of Empathy (ROE). This program teaches children about feelings - their own feelings and the feelings of others. Once every three weeks, baby Tenley and baby Bea and their parents will visit the Grade 2 classrooms.

Trained ROE instructor, Mrs. Moses, will gather the children in the classroom and together they will watch the baby grow.

The children will predict and cheer when their ROE baby reaches the developmental milestones of the first year. Mrs. Moses also coaches the children in observing the baby and reading the cues the baby gives as to how the baby is feeling, and then she uses this discussion as a lever for the children to talk about their own emotions

Mrs. Moses also visits the classroom before and after each family visit to prepare and reinforce teachings using specialized lesson plans for each visit. For more than ten years across Canada, internationally, and right here at VES, thousands of children have learned about respect and care for one another with the lessons started through their Roots of Empathy baby.
