Thousands of people gathered at the Vermilion Agricultural Grounds for the 112 th Annual Vermilion Fair, experiencing oodles of fun activities from July 26 – 28. The parade on July 26, included dignitaries, and a colourful array of floats; this year’s theme was, ‘Sew it, Grow it, Show it!’ With so many visitors and volunteer s in town, pancake break fasts kept everyone eager in the mornings including ones at the Vermilion Legion, Vermilion Chrysler, and Fountain Tire. As people made their way over to the grounds, children’s eyes lit up with excitement as Old Macdonald’s Barn was full of furry critters to hold, and the midway was full of rides, and so many events to attend. Always a hit, the tractor pulls drew some excitement with four women

entering this year, and the grandstand shows were full of fabulous music. Agriventure was new this year with lots of learning opportunities and visual displays. The tradeshow and exhibit halls continued to be popular as well as the large variety of agricultural venues. Cattle, horse, poultry, and sheep shows were all enjoyed. There was a large number of farming equipment on display for people to eye. Chuckwagon and Chariot races kept the crowds excited and cheering. The Cowboy Mounted Shooters eventwas a wild show for those who haven’t seen it before. On July 28, the evening closed with a beautiful display of fire works, and overall everyone was thrilled to have been a part of the 112 t h Vermilion Fair. Maria Champagne and Joanne Kaliel provided informative, interactive demonstrations from their newly acquired mobile Rural Safet y Unit during the Vermilion Fair. The new unit was launched in the spring of 2018 and will travel across Alberta to rural schools, communities, fairs and other events to educate, encourage and promote safety. “The program is aimed at rural grade 4 to 12 students, volunteers, teachers, young farm workers and their families who live on, work, play or visit farms and ranches,” said Rural Farm Safety Specialist Maria Champagne. The unit was made possible through the generosity of sponsors such as ATCO,

FarmAd, GlacierFarmMedia, Nutrien, Rocky Mountain Equipment, TransCanada, and UFA. The Unit boasts seven interactive, hands-on stations that focus on hazard identification, large animals, large equipment, utilities, risk assessment, chemicals and protective equipment. “The objective is to promote education and safety on the farm,” said Rural Farm Safety Specialist Joanne Kaliel. According to their information pamphlet, the Rural Safety Unit will operate between April and October each year and is offered to schools by donation and a nominal fee charged to community events. The evening will feature a prime rib dinner, live music, a brief program, live & silent auctions, and the gathering of the CPCA family along with fans, sponsors and dignitaries. The live and silent auctions will include some unique items that can’t be found anywhere else. Tickets are $65 for adults, $35 for

I love summer and the Fair but man oh man that was just too hot for me! Thursday the parade was pret t y fantastic, and we have to give Anderson Northside Trailers a huge thank you for lending us the trailer again this year, without you guys (especially Milt Anderson) our float would never have happened. We picked up the trailer from Webb’s on Tuesday, and we went

crazy building our float during the day right up until Thursday morning! This year we won 1st place in the commercial categor y and earned ourselves bragging rights. LOL. Once the parade was complete, the race around the fair began, and it was nonstop until the last event Saturday evening. The Voice staff had a couple of really busy days, as we tried to cover every event held. Fair time gives us the opportunity to meet a lot of people which is pretty fantastic. From what I saw and the people I spoke with it certainly seemed like the Fair was quite the success again this year, Bravo to the Vermilion Ag Society and all the volunteers, you guys and gals did a spectacular job.

Cannabis Open House And Town Council

A larger than normal crowd appeared to express concerns during the Cannabis Open House and Town Council meeting on July 17. Bylaws for Smoking and Vaping as well as Cannabis Regulation and Control were discussed. Mayor, Caroline McAuley said, “The bulk of guests expressed concerns regarding that they don’t want our community to become a cannabis hotspot and that they don’t want cannabis to be what Vermilion is known for. Council later addressed these concerns by looking at putting setbacks between cannabis stores creating some separation.” Council passed the second reading of the Cannabis Regulation and Control Bylaw, and the first reading of the Smoking and Vaping Bylaw. local-government/bylaws/. “Regarding smoking and vaping, council especially spoke to the bylaw’s purposes, looking at health and safety for children and families. Second and third reading of this bylaw will be given on August 22. We certainly invite people to provide feedback through the Town Office and wanted to give plenty of time for residents to do so. We want to make sure things are in order and don’t want to pull back after it goes through,” said McAuley. Another highlight of the meeting included recognition being given to local volunteer firefighters for over 20 years of service. The same members had received recognition from the Lieutenant Governor in May, and the presentation on July 17 acknowledged their service in Vermilion. For example, Vermilion Fire Chief, Bill Roth, was recognized for 32 years of service. Council also noted how success-

ful the Canada Day celebrations were, and mentioned that next year, the Taste of Vermilion will be hosted at the Vermilion Agricultural Grounds to accommodate parking and vendor accessibility.

ATTENTION LANDOWNERS 2018 ROADSIDE MOWING PROGRAM

The County of Minburn No. 27 Agricultural Service Board will once again be operating a Roadside Spraying Program for the control of noxious weeds and brush in the 2018 season. If you do not wish to have spraying completed adjacent to your property, “DO NOT SPRAY BETWEEN SIGNS” signs are available from the Agricultural Service Board office. There is no charge for these signs however landowners are responsible to erect and maintain them on their property. A reminder, however, that if a landowner does not want adjacent road allowance sprayed, the landowner will accept full responsibility for noxious weed / brush control on said road allowance, in accordance with County Bylaw 714 – 1973. If you should have any further questions regarding the roadside spraying program please contact Darwin Ullery, Director of Agriculture and Utilities Services at (780) 632-4033.

The County of Minburn No. 27 Agricultural Service Board will be commencing the roadside mowing program in 2018. The program will consist of mowing all road allowances with up to a fifteen foot cut from the shoulder into the ditch. Persons wishing to cut hay on a road allowance need to complete all cutting prior to the mowing contractor’s arrival. If hay has been cut and is in swath, mowers will go around that particular swathed ditch however all standing grass will be mowed with absolutely no exceptions. Av o c a d o s a r e a very nutritious food that contains healthy fat. Avocados are the fruit of an evergreen tree that can grow up to 65 feet tall. Avocados have unique health benefits. Avocados have the ability to increase the absorption of beta carotene and lycopene. That means when you add them to a salad which includes romaine, carrots and tomatoes, your body can make better use of the nutrients by 200% – 400%. Avocados also contain at least nine different forms of beta carotene, which is the precursor to Vitamin A antioxidants. Avocados also contain Vitamin C and E antioxidants. The most nutritious part of the avocado is the dark green part of the flesh closest to the skin. Avocados are high in beneficial mono-saturated fats that help to reduce inflammation, regulate cholesterol and lower the risk of heart disease. Avocados are a source of omega 3 in the form of alpha linolenic acid. The fat in avocados is monosaturated, and helps to lower bad cholesterol. Avocados contain many anti-inflammatory compounds that help prevent arthritis, promote heart health and help to regulate blood sugar. They

also contain vitamin B6 to help support 1/2 cup cocoa powder the immune system and vitamin K which 1/2 cup peanut butter is anti inflammatory. The Vermilion Legion was plumb full on July 24, as Mick Flannery performed for the Vermilion Folk Club. All the way from Blarney, Ireland, Flannery captivated the audience, playing left-handed guitar and keyboard. “I mostly write sad songs about my own life, and you don’t have to clap for my self-involvement,” joked Flannery. Vermilion Fair JULY 26-28 Bishops Visit Anglican Church Booth At Vermilion Fair

The St. Savior’s Anglican Church in Vermilion was thrilled to host Bishop Sixburt Macumi from Berundi, Africa, his wife Clotilde, and the Right Reverend Jane Alexander-Bishop of the Diocese of Edmonton on July 27. The two bishops had met ten years ago at a conference in London and have maintained a prayer support relationship between their two congregations. “The Anglican Church is a worldwide communion made up of national churches, provinces, and diocese. There are approximately 50 congregations and 70 priests in the Edmonton Diocese including Vermilion,” said Reverend Elizabeth Metcalfe. The group had travelled to Cold Lake on their way here experiencing their first

Saskatoon picking and quad riding. “It’s really great to be able to showcase rural areas, and especially during the fair. This allows our guests to compare rural life in Alberta to rural life in Berundi. Often during visits, time limitations don’t allow these excursions,” said Reverend Elizabeth Metcalfe. Each shoe gets eight nails per foot, and we clean and map the foot to make sure it is healthy. It’s

important that they are flat, level, and balanced so that the horses don’t clip themselves. With a race horse, if you don’t have a per fect foot, you don’t have a horse,” said Adam. Gym-cana And Western Riding At The Vermilion Fair

Submitted Danae Reid 14, has been riding for nine years and Taylor Reid 9, has been riding for five years. Both girls are excited for months in advance to come to the Vermilion fair. As parents it is our favourite venue as it has the small town family feel, everyone is friendly and the fair has so many events to watch. The petting zoo is also a favourite place for Taylor, where you will find her sitting for hours with the animals. The antique tractors is also a favourite event to watch. The carnival is always a treat for the girls after a competitive

day of riding. This is Danaes first year of western riding. She has competed for several years riding English and jumping. Working with animals is ver y therapedic and teaches responsibility, empathy, team work, time management, money management and so much more. I would recommend the Vermilion Fair to ever yone, competitors and spectators alike, you will not find a better way to spend a weekend.

New this year to the Vermilion Fair was a Mule and Horse Exhibit. This baby mule is only 2 months only and drew in large crowds at the Vermilion Ag. Society Fair throughout the 3 days. Born on May 18, 2018, Crosshairs Trailhawk “Hawk” is registered with the Canadian Donkey and Mule Association (CDMA). Leopard Appaloosa Sire: Big Ears Baxter (CDMA) Dam: STJ Snowbird (ApHC) “Birdie” gave birth to this HUGE, healthy john mule. “Hawk, is exactly what we ordered with this breeding!”, said Krista Critch. “He’s got looks with his unique, loud, appaloosa coloring and correct build, strong straight legs, a beautiful hip and deep wither joined by a shor t

back. We’re already seeing his parents inquisitive, friendly personalities coming through! Hawk will be an excellent all around mule.” Crosshair Springs is owned and operated by Krista Critch and Logan Hunter. As a couple they each share a passion for both horses and mules taking pride in the stock they produce. Their horses and mules are quiet and well handled.
