There was a lot of enthusiasm at Mannville Riverview Golf Course as the Vermilion Credit Union hosted their annual Golf Tournament on June 15. In years past, the tournament has raised $111,600 for local charities. This year’s recipients were the Mannville Educational Fund Association, the Islay Fire Department, and the Vermilion River Flying Club. “We’re thrilled to be able to support these groups and would like to thank their members for volunteering for the event,” said Christa Grocock, Credit Union Member Service Supervisor.

Around the course, golfers enjoyed the high stakes with a ‘putt for lotto’ challenge, hole-in-one prize, leisure package (patio set), and a refreshment package. “ We always look for ward to hosting; it’s a fun event each year. We have dedicated members who look forward to participating each year and, we are very thankful for their support. Being a co-operative company, giving back to the community has always been a big part of the Vermilion Credit Union; enriching some of the area’s clubs and people that are a part of them and we enjoy helping out when we can,” said Grocock.

Lighten Up Therapy & Wellness – Grand Opening

Community members gathered to celebrate the Grand Opening of Lighten Up Therapy & Wellness in Vermilion on June 14. Staf f and representatives of the Town kicked the event off with a ribbon cut ting ceremony, and a barbeque complete with sides and cupcakes was soon underway. Throughout the afternoon, customers enjoyed shopping and seeing what products and services were available, as well as the hourly specials and a promotional spinning wheel that gave the option to win free items. Proceeds from the barbeque went to support the Vermilion and Area Crisis Line. The store offers health food supplements and essential oils, natural bath and body products, crystals

and jewellery, giftware, and wellness books. There is also an infrared sauna and ionic foot detox room, as well as massage, angel therapy, and workshop space. “The business keeps changing and evolving, and we are really looking forward to hosting a Youth Entrepreneurship Market on Thursday evenings throughout the summer,” said Owner, Amber Howard. 65th Annual Wainwright Stampede

Prepare for fun and excitement at this year’s 65th Annual Wainwright Stampede, happening from June 21 until June 24. The annual event is held each year at the Wainwright Stampede Grounds and draws onlookers from all over Alberta. With many events happening throughout the weekend, everyone has something to enjoy, including five performances of Canadian Professional Rodeo, four days of Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Races, the Downtown Parade, amusement rides, and a Cabaret. For the Rodeo and Chuckwagon Races, attendees can purchase a weekend pass for $150 excluding the cabaret. The pass is good for all performances, and a chance at the door prize; a 2018 Dodge Quad Cab 4x4. The Chuckwagon Races are held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday. The Rodeo Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, 9 p.m. on Saturday, and 6:30 p.m. on Sunday for the ‘Battle of the Buckles’ Finals. “All around it will be a great event for the whole weekend. We have events every day

and they are all good! Hopefully, we’ll have some good weather and that the CPCA Chuckwagons will get four days of good running,” said Stampede President Murray Bretzer. The Parade will be on June 23 at 10 a.m. with the route available on the Stampede website. West Coast Amusements will be preparing for the influx of people that come every year to enjoy the midway full of rides and games. Wristbands and tickets are available to purchase each day and give you all day access to multiple rides. Throughout the Stampede weekend you won’t go hungry with a wide array of barbeques and pancake breakfasts to visit in the town of Wainwright. Each breakfast and lunch supports a cause, including the Alzheimers Society of Alberta and the Battle River Victims Society, etc. A Friday night dance featuring the band Roadkill will begin at 9:30 p.m. with free admission. The Cabaret is held on Saturday, June 23 after the ‘Rodeo Under the Lights’ at the Peace Memorial Communiplex with tickets costing $20. This year the featured performer is Jerry Sereda, a coun-

Taco salad is a great one-dish meal, that is easy to make, even on work weekdays. It is a great salad for summer suppers. It’s a family favourite and a go-to meal when I need to cook something fast and delicious. If you are preparing this salad to take to a potluck, don’t add the dressing or taco chips until just before serving as the chips will go soggy and the lettuce will wilt. With this recipe you can skip using the taco seasoning mix and bypass the added chemicals, simply by using spices that you have in your cupboard already. You can use my recipe for ranch dressing, which tastes amazing and fresh, with taco salad. In an earlier column I shared the recipe for Avocado Garlic Lime dress-

ing, which is amazing as well with taco salad. If you are pressed for time or ingredients, many people will use a commercial Catalina dressing or ranch dressing for their taco salad, just read labels and try to find one that has the least amount of additives. To begin, prepare the meat topping and allow cooling off, preparing the salad, and the salad dressing. There are two ways to serve, one way is to add the meat and dressing into the salad, stir and serve. The second way is plated. That is to plate the salad, break some taco chips on top, spoon on meat topping and then top with the salad dressing. Meat topping 1 1.2 – 2 pounds of ground meat 1 onion chopped 2 cloves garlic finely chopped 2 tomatoes - chopped 2 teaspoons chili powder 1 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper 1/2 – 3/4 cup grated farmer, mozzarella 1/4 teaspoon oregano or cheddar cheese 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 cup chopped cilantro (optional) 1 tablespoon sriracha hot chili sauce. Cook 5 - 7 minutes until 2 tablespoon of chopped parsley the onions and tomatoes are softened, 2 teaspoons of finely chopped fresh dill and the spices have blended. 3/4 teaspoon salt Salad 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion, Romaine lettuce head, torn or cut green onion or chives into bite-size pieces 1 teaspoon honey 1 tomato chopped 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 perfectly ripe avocado chopped 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/3 cup sliced black olives ( optional) 1 clove of garlic finely chopped 1 cup canned black beans, drained and 1/2 teaspoon onion powder rinsed (optional) 1 Tablespoon olive oil 1/3 cup chopped or thinly sliced red Stir all ingredients together. Canada Day Your Way This year, Canada Day falls on Sunday, July 1. There are plenty of ways you can join in, whether you’re alone or with your family. Here are a few of our favourite Canada Day activities: Go to the park. Has your town planned a day-long event around the park bandstand with live entertainment and funfair games? Round up your sun hat, lawn chair and a cooler of drinks and go join the festivities. If there’s nothing official happening, the next town over most likely has something going on. Lakeland College Vermilion will be offering two screenings of the Clint Eastwood film, ‘Indian Horse’ at the Alumni Theatre on June 19, at 12:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. The screenings are par t of Lakeland College’ Reconciliation Speaker Series, and an opening prayer and short presentation will precede each screening. According to www.cbc.ca, the film tells the story of a young Ojibwe boy who is torn from his family and forced into a residential school, where he is forbidden to speak his language and faces brutal punishment for the tiniest transgressions. His only solace comes from a sheet of ice, and his love of hockey eventually carries him to stardom; however, his past continues to haunt him. Though the film covers tough subjects, it shines a light on truth and reconciliation, the impact of residential schools, and coping with trauma. The film is mu c h anti c ipated as area actor, Tristen Marty-Pahtaykan, from Frog Lake First Nation played a role in the film. Based on Richard Wagamese’s novel, the film portrays the story of a young Indigenous boy an d hi s c hall e n g e s an d tr ium p h s. Vermilion’s TD Canada Trust hosted a Hotdog Fundraiser on June 15. “We are thrilled to be raising funds for the Summer Reading Program at the Vermilion Public Library. We would like to thank the community for the support! It was a nice day to be outdoors, and we wanted to support all the reading we can; it is vital

to children, and we wanted to support something local,” said Margaret Palmer, TD Financial Service Representative. “Our Hot Dog raised $345.87 and staff donations topped it up to $400. We had previously donated $100 to the program, so altogether we will have donated $500. It is a great program to gets kids reading and enjoying it!” said Marlene Beattie, Vermilion TD Branch Manager.

Interior Design’s Award-Winning Streak Continues

Lakeland College-Vermilion’s Inter i o r D e s i g n Te c h n o l o g y Pr o g r a m celebrated its 15th consecutive year of winning in student design competitions. Mandy Davediuk and Mackenzie Dieleman earned second- and thirdplace finishes, respectively, in the 2017- 2018 National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) Student Design Competition. Both graduates of the Class of 2018 received a scholarship and a trip to the trip to the 2019 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in Las Vegas, Nev., for their podium finishes. “We are thrilled with our students’ competition success,” says Rochelle Horne, Interior Design Technology

We’re very proud of their accomplishments in and beyond our studio.” The NKBA design competition challenged students to design a small kitchen for a Habitat for Humanit y home. ‘Tis the Field Trip season. Last week many elementary students left the school to explore and learn off campus. On Tuesday, June 12, Ms. McDermott’s and Mrs. Ryan’s grade one students boarded the bus filled with excitement and anticipation as they headed to Lloydminster. The students first stop was the Border City Petting Zoo. This hands-on zoo features African lions, a camel, a variety of birds and reptiles. The students enjoyed seeing all these animals and learning lots about them. After the Petting Zoo they headed to Bud Miller Park for lunch and some playtime. On Wednesday, June 13, Mrs. Lysons and Mrs. Svenungard spent the day at the Strathcona Wilderness Centre. They had an amazing day exploring this beautiful area and learning so much about nature. Thursday, June 14 saw Mrs. Martin’s and Mrs. McCormack’s class head out early for the Edmonton Valley Zoo. It was a perfect day to explore the zoo, and they were able to see a variety of animals. St. Jerome’s School News

Arctic Wolves were very active, and the Red Pandas are extremely cute. After exploring for an hour in small groups, they gathered into one group to learn more about the zoo with their guide, Robert. The students learned how fur, feathers and scales act like a coat for animals to keep them warm, and dry. It is also used for camouflage or a warning to their prey. It was a wonderful day of learning and the students were introduced to many animals they have never seen before. To break up the trip, the students had a chance to visit the Pysanka in Vegreville and get some activity at the playground. On June 5, Mrs. Roth’s Grade Fours were very happy to welcome Shelly Ann Dodgson to their classroom. Mrs. Dodgson travels throughout northern Alberta sharing information about 4H and the Canadian Agriculture Program. The children learned a lot about agriculture in Canada and each received two booklets that explain the many different careers involved with agriculture. It was a fun filled hour with lots of laughs and lots of information. Thanks, Shelly Ann! Grade 3S and 4R were very excited to welcome the Vermilion Public Library to

St. Jerome’s on Tuesday, June 12. Stuart and Shelia read two great books, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Librarian From the Black Lagoon. The children were very excited to hear about the Summer Reading Club that the Library is hosting this summer to encourage kids to read over the summer and to keep those reading levels up. Thanks again to the Public Library for the visit and the great Knock Knock jokes. Both brightened up

our day! Students in grade eight are finishing up their unit about Japan. Mrs. Crate brought in some Japanese items for the students to look at and they were fortunate to have some brave students model the kimonas. It’s Child Safety Week and Alberta Health Services (AHS) is reminding all Albertans to make all-terrain vehicle (ATV) safety a priority this week and every week. ATVs pose significant risk to all users and particularly children less than 16 years of age, who have not yet developed to the point of having the strength, skills or judgment needed to operate an ATV. Over a one-year period ending April 1, 2017, 78 children were seen in Alberta’s two pediatric emergency departments due to ATV-related injuries; 31 required hospital admission and one died.

To protect children less than 16 years of worn every ride can save your life.
