F’Laura n’ Company was thrilled to host a Grand Opening for their greenhouse in Vermilion on June 2. They also celebrated five years in business, but it was their first year in the new building. Everything is grown in a greenhouse on their farm beginning in February, and this is their third year operating in town. “We are very excited for the future, and have already received two catalogues for the 2019 growing season,” said Laura Waterfield. Laura moved to Vermilion in 1991 to attend Lakeland College and after meeting Dean, decided to stay. “I’ve always felt at home here. There’s something to be said for taking something from the beginning and seeing it through. I love the growing, the design aspect, and the creativity it allows me.
I was born and raised a farm girl so anything agriculture is pretty much who I am,” said Laura. Their greenhouse of fer s annual bedding plants, vegetables and herbs, hanging baskets and potted plants, garden seeds, soil and mulch; and trees, shrubs and perennials. “It’s important to me to be able to provide a quality product that I know has been grown without the use of pesticides. That’s why I insist on growing everything that is sold in the greenhouse. Deputy Mayor Tannis Henderson presented Laura with a plaque on behalf of the Town of Vermilion during their ribbon cutting ceremony and said, “The greenhouse looks gorgeous, with a great selection. People in this area are stepping up and keeping businesses alive, which is great to see. They are proven business owners which is hugely benefiPhotos submitted cial.”

The Vermilion 4-H Interclub hosted their annual Heifer Show on May 27, and Steer Show and Sale on May 28, at the Vermilion Agricultural Grounds. Vermilion and Clandonald 4-H Clubs showcased their animals throughout the event during showmanship and confirmation classes. Clandonald had 13 members and three cleavers this year, while Vermilion had 26 members and five cleavers this year. “These children have really put a lot
of hard work into their animals this year. They are an amazing group with both clubs all helping each other which is nice to see, said Vermilion General Leader, Kris Lehmann. During the sale, Miles Wowk auctioned 36 steers, and members thanked the sponsors and buyers from the area for their support. Eleven - year - old Ainsley Lehne spent her first year in 4-H raising a heifer, but ended up showing someone else’s steer and said, “I love 4-H because everyone else really does bring you confidence by

for his steer, Burt. This year’s Grand Champion Steer was awarded to Payton Farkash for her steer, Jasper. Farkash had spent three years as a cleaver, but during her first year as a junior with a steer she said that she loves 4-H because, “You can learn so much from it!”

The Mannville Elks Lodge 395 held their first annual Bike Rally and Classic Cars event on Saturday, June 2, 2018. The event was hosted by the Mannville Elks, with support from neighbouring lodges in Wainwright, Viking, Irma, and Vermilion. Before the Bike Rally began, there was a ceremony celebrating the Elks members at Confectionary 881. The eldest member of the Elks, Nestor Bohaichuck, handed off the gavel to the youngest member, Danny Rau. “I’ve been a Mannville Elk for 58 years, and I’m proud to be an Elk. I hope you will continue the activities and traditions and be a good, proud Elk,” said

Mannville Elks Bike Rally
Bohaichuck to Rau. After the presentation came the Bike Rally, which consisted of 35 riders travelling around 240 kilometers. They started the ride in Mannville, travelling down to Viking, then through Irma, and stopping in Wainwright for a lunch provided by the Wainwright Elks. The riders then travelled up to Vermilion and ended in Mannville. After the rally, riders reconvened at the Gazebo in Mannville for the presentation of prizes. First prize was a knife made by Jim Myhovich out of a Harley Davidson Primary Drive Chain, valued at over $700 and was won by Gary Fahner. Second prize was a Stay and Play voucher for the Mannville Riverview golf course, won by Bill Calder, third prize

was a knife making class taught by Ed Storch won by Levi Wonsik, and fourth prize was a Paintball Experience for eight people at Reavers Paintball won by Wayne Wascherol. In addition to the bikes, there were an additional five cars entered in the rally. The riders and car owners in the rally paid an entry fee of $25, which covered the cost of prizes, and lunch, with the rest of the proceeds going to the Institute for Stuttering Treatment and Research (ISTAR). ISTAR is an institute run by the University of Alberta that offers specialized treatment to children’s, teens, and adults that stutter. The institute also conducts research into stuttering, offers training for speech pathology students

and clinicians, and promotes public awareness of stuttering and its treatment. “We would like to give many thanks to our sponsors, Elks members, and participants. Many hands make light work”, said Elk member Jim Storch, who was the organizer of the event. Also happening the same day as the bike rally was the Mannville Community Wide Garage Sale. The day was kicked off with a Pancake Breakfast put on by the Historical Society, and later in the day was a barbeque lunch hosted by the McQueen United Church. While waiting in between breakfast and lunch, people had the opportunity to hunt for treasures at each of the garage sales held across town.

According to The Weather Network, the 2018 Summer Forecast f o r J u l y, A u g u s t , and September is hot and dry for most of western Canada with drought and wildfires becoming a
major growing concern as the summer progresses. Up until now, we have had insignificant rainfall, and everything was starting to look desert-like as the grass still carried its yellow hue and would crunch under your feet when you walked on it. Dirt has been blowing around with the slightest of winds, and honestly, the heat was a little stomach sickening. I don’t like
the heat at all, anything over 22 Celsius and I begin to hibernate. Growing up in Newfoundland rainy days were not something we had to do a rain dance to get, and I have been enjoying these slightly less hot days and the spring showers that seems to have arrived late. I love the smell of the rainy air; it somehow reminds me of back home which I have been missing as of
late. I’m sure the rainy weather the last couple days has been a blessing for the farmers as their seed was probably scorching under the hot sun and little rain. We still need another few good days of rain to give their crops a chance to take hold before the warm, drier weather hits us again, but honestly, all I can think of right now is ‘ How Great Thou Rains Are.’

Spring is always a great time to give a room new life with a fresh paint colour. To start decorating your room, there are some decisions you have to make. First of all you must decide how you would like the room to feel. Do you want a cozy retreat, a refreshing expansive feel, a quiet place or a burst warmth and sunshine? Colour evokes emotion, and the choice of colour will help you create the feeling of the room. Light and warm colours such as a light yellow and ivory will bring in the warmth and the sunshine to room. Warm colours will advance, thus making the room appear slightly smaller, but also warm and cozy. Earth toned beiges are warm neutral colours. Most people find earth tones easier to live with for a longer period of time. Cool colours such as aqua’s, blues and greens move visually away, therefore creating a feeling of larger space. Cool colours also feel cool and can evoke feelings of relaxation, peacefulness, expansiveness and quietness.

One of the biggest trends in wall colour on Instagram is white. It is often mixed with wood, such as a wood floor and all white walls and ceiling. Cabinetry is often white or well or wood. Grey is still a popular colour for walls, and there are cool grays with more blue in them and warm grays which have some brown mixed in. Currently the green grays are emerging as a trend, along with sage green, which is a “go with everything” kind of colour. The colour trends on Pinterest are still showing a lot of grey and various shades of blue/ green, along with sage green. Bloggers are often picking up on emerging trends such as the white, sage green and style trends that are a throwback to the 1970 ”s. Think wi c ker, plant hangers, macramé wall décor, white walls with wood, marigold geometric patterns, brick and a black chalkboard wall. Benjamin Moore is showing a deep red accent wall as a 2018 colour trend. The Pantone colour of 2018 is ultra violet, and it is best worked with as an accent colour. You can never go wrong selecting a colour that you love, just be sure that it is not to dark or overwhelming for your space.
No matter what colours are trending we often have to work with some existing elements. In selecting the wall colour you will also need to consider the colour of the flooring. The wall colour does not need to match the floor colour, but the two should look good together. Har wood flooring can be paired with many cool colours as well as warm colours that have the same colour harmony. If you have a neutral toned carpet, then you may want to explore having a similar toned paint, to create a neutral backdrop for the furniture and other decor. If you have a coloured carpet in your room, then here are a couple of options: doing the same colour in a lighter version on the wall or taking some time to develop a colour scheme to work well with the existing coloured carpet. Another point to consider when you are selecting wall paint is the colour that the furniture and other décor, so that you will have a cohesive colour scheme. Remember that does not mean things need to match; they just have to look good together. The colour of the wall paint should provide some contrast with the furniture and the wall decor.

The higher the contrast, the fuller the room will appear. Lower contrast of wall paint with the furniture or bedding will give the room the appearance of more visual space and more restfulness. If you are selecting a darker colour as a feature, it is best to choose a wall without windows, and have the colour change end with an inside corner. A black feature wall is tending now. Other features include wallpaper, especially a wall of vintage brick wallpaper, or a geometric design. To add visual interest to a bedroom the wall in which the headboard or the head of the bed is placed can be painted as a feature wall. If you like to change up the look in the bedroom, with minimal effort, then the following is an example of how to achieve the ease of change. The room can be painted in neutral colours (beige or grey), with lighter or darker bedding (white, cream or grey) and accented with coloured toss cushions for example in purple tones, with a feature wall in a rich plum coloured paint. To change up the look, it will only require painting the feature wall and changing up the toss cushion covers to give you a new look.

I h o p e eve r yo n e had a safe and great long weekend, and also spent most of it outdoors, weather wise it was one of the nicest May long weekends this century, for me even a little too hot but it was enjoyable. I spent most of it outdoors but not on adventures as I would rather be doing, I, however, persisted with lawn and garden work, I got all of my gardens in with potatoes super hills, my plan was 52 hills, and ended up with 54 hills ...perfect. I cannot live without my garden potatoes, my plan of 52 super hills means I am planning one hill per week of next year, last year with an average of a five-gallon pail full of potatoes per hill that leaves with seed potatoes and even some to share. Lawn and yard work even got done, and I feel like I am even catching up to chores, and when I say I may not have been on adventures, I meant away from home as every day at home is an adventure with eight outdoor loving Alaskan malamutes. We found fur-ever homes for all the pups we sold, but still have four left we are keeping for the team, and I think these were the most energetic and mischievous four, but I love them, so that leaves me with eight, four considered adults and four huge pups. These pups are beyond big already, pushing 40 lbs/ 20 Kilo and training is a full-time job right now, the training right now is mostly social and basic commands and rules, the main rule is the boundary of the property and to stay away from roads. But we worked out a lot of cans and cannot do’s quickly and the whole herd if very manageable, more than most would think, one nice thing is with the midday heat, all the dogs have lengthy naps, with a lot of dips in the pool. Each kennel has its own kiddy pool plus we have two more in the
yard, and of course, they have their favourite...the now stinky duck pond, speaking of adventure it’s fun to watch as each dog hits any water their energy skyrockets. One of their routines we are working on, which is a dip in the pool or pond then run full out to the freshly planted garden to do laps, the other day I sat in the shade watching them do laps in the garden, I gave up yelling as every one of them suddenly had a loss of hearing. I am sure I lost a wheelbarrow full of fresh dirt as they all were mud from head to toe, now I was totally expecting this and planted my potatoes a little deeper than usual, and with a little hoeing the hills look like new, a small price to pay for such a happy family. As I do chores the big dogs head out to our pasture to hunt for gophers or moles, except for Aunt Teek who stays in the yard to care for the pups; at only six months she is so awesome with caring for the youngsters, once the adult dogs are finished their adventures they return to gather up the pups for a swim in one of the ponds. Now that the pups are old enough to care for themselves I can head out for my adventures soon with their Momma Miss Oohohh; we have some more antler shed hunting, fishing and exploring to do. Miss Oohohh is back in great shape, and I can see she wants to get out there also, she fits her pulling harness again and is raring to pull, so soon we will hook them up to the summer cart for some early morning runs when it’s still cool. Speaking of the dogs, I can hear them all singing out there telling me I am late for their morning adventures so I will keep this column a little shorter. Just a reminder for those who apply for the Alberta Hunting Draws, the 2018 draw booklet is available online, and this Tuesday, May 29 one can also apply for the draws at retail licence outlets or online at https://www.albertarelm.com. Remember the draw period is available only for several
short weeks with the deadline being June 21, 2018, the hunting draw booklet is online at http://albertaregulations.ca as is the 2018 hunting regulations when available. We still have almost a month of spring left until summer officially arrives on June 21st, 2018 this year, so get out there and enjoy spring.

Students were elated to learn firsthand about aviation as they were hosted by members of the Vermilion River Flying Club (VRFC) at the Vermilion Airport on May 29. The Vermilion Elementary School’s (VES) Grade 6 students had been studying a flight unit and seized the opportunity to enhance their knowledge during

this visit. VRFC member, Er win Warkentin described pilot roles, and children asked what different parts of the aircraft were. Warkentin said that at a minimum the aircraft goes through inspection once per year, with commercial aircraft being more often. He noted that the students might see low flying pipeline patrols or crop dusters in the area. “We love aviation and sharing that

The 18th Annual Credit Union Charity Golf Tournament will be held at the Mannville Riverview Golf Course on June 15. Last year’s tournament benefited the Derwent Fire Department, Friends of Vermilion Health Centre, and the Vermilion Heritage Park Community Oven Project. This year’s beneficiaries will be the Islay Fire Department, the Mannville Education Fund Association, and the Vermilion River Flying Club. “We are not only here to provide a service. Shine’s Psychic Fair And Market
It was an exciting day for participants on Saturday, June 2 as they attended Shine’s 1st Psychic Fair and Market happening from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. The show was held at the Mannville Recreation Center and consisted of 16 readers and 11 vendors. The readers included mediums and card readers to animal telepaths. The vendors featured products, including stones, weighted blankets, essential oils, and jewelry. The readers came from all over Alberta, with even a few coming from Saskatchewan. One reader at the Fair, Animal Communicator Deb Barber is a local from Mannville and states she can communicate with animals. “I can communicate with either living
pets or those that have crossed over. It’s done by telepathy, so there is no language, its done through pictures, sounds colours; sometimes a little movie will play in my head,“ said Barber. Although the methods of relaying the messages differ from reader to reader, Vicky Marshall says that, “It doesn’t matter the method, the messages from each reading will be the same to you each time if you’re sending out that energy.” Marshall is the owner of Shine in Mannville and was also the organizer of the Fair and Market. “Everybody needs a chance to shine, and we specialize in products to help you shine from the inside out! The 64th Annual Lea Park Rodeo will be hosted at Lea Park from June 8 – 10. The professional rodeo is sure to see lots of excitement again this year, and is an area favourite for many. The rodeo will begin on June 8, at 6 p.m., and beer gardens will be open all three days. A pancake breakfast will be hosted at the Marwayne Arena on June 9, from 8 – 10 a.m. Another Rodeo performance will take place at 1 p.m. with slack at 5:30 p.m., followed by a rodeo dance (18+) at the Marwayne Arena at 9 p.m. A cowboy church service will be held on June 10, at the rodeo grounds featuring

Drum beats thundered through the gymnasium and colourful regalia circled the floor as the Vermilion Elementary School hosted an Indigenous Culture Day on June 1. Honoured guests included the Treaty 6 Drum Group from Edmonton, and Dorcean Ryane along with the Pewasenakwan Primary School Dancers from Onion Lake. Kevin John emceed the event with drum leader, Quinton Tootoosis introducing each dance. Along with Principal Doherty, John honoured the elders; his mother, Helen John, and Quinton Tootoosis. Principal Doherty welcomed everyone and acknowledged the land on which we live and work as Treaty 6 territory as an act of reconciliation. “The drum is made of all natural things, and is often said to be the heartbeat of the earth. Our people dance in the direc-
tion that the sun moves. For hundreds and hundreds of years our people have had a very deep understanding of how the world works. Tobacco is used mostly for ceremonial purposes, as well as some medicinal,” said John who also noted the other sacred plants as sweetgrass, sage, and juniper. Drummers represented various regions of Treaty 6, and Tootoosis said, “Today we’re here to celebrate with you! Notice the regalia. There is a lot of beadwork which takes a long time. The women’s buckskin regalia has a black tipped eagle feather and a bald eagle honourary fan. The Men’s Chicken Dance regalia has a bustle with hawk and chicken feathers, porcupine hair on the roach, cuffs and arm bands, as well as bells.” Various styles of dance included the Women’s Fancy Shawl, the Women’s Traditional, the Men’s Chicken Dance, the Men’s Traditional, the Boy’s Fancy, two Intertribal dances, and a Round Dance. “At the end of the season, our people

That was one of the best elementary school intertribal dances I’ve ever seen in my life; great job of participating! It’s these times of good relationships that create opportunity for more interactions,” said John. The afternoon continued with several activities including bannock making and Cree language, an Indigenous artifact station, moss bag teaching, a jingle dress station, Inuit games, traditional healing songs, and Pewasenakwan Primary School Dancers at traditional story telling. Twenty-seven grade 10 students, three grade 11 students, Mr. and Mrs. MacMillan, and Mr. and Mrs. Beaudette, traveled to Bert Church School in Airdrie for the annual ASLC Conference from Sunday, May 27 - Tuesday, June 29. Not only were there approximately 900 students from across the province, in attendance, but even a contingent of about 20 from China! This year’s theme was “Agents of CHANGE!” Spirit groups were named after fictional superheroes/villains such as Thor, Groot, Iron Fist, Emma Frost, Nick Fury. Through workshops, keynote speakers and group challenges delegates were encouraged to find their courage to create positive changes within their school community. Once again students from the Grade 10 Leadership class made all the staff members at St. Jerome’s feel very special and appreciated for an entire week. We were treated to muffins, doughnuts, and juice with the saying, “I am Muffin without you!”. A single carnation and homemade cookies were personally delivered to every staff member on the following day. Letters

The Grade 6 students went on a field trip to the Vermilion Airport on May 29. The Vermilion Flying Club let the students get up close and move the controls of the airplanes to learn about how an airplane flies. They learned about what it takes to become a pilot as well. VES would like to thank the Flying Club for ensuring that the students had a great day at the airport. On May 30, the Grade 2 students had the opportunity to go to the Vermilion Public Library to listen to two experts talk about different insects and magnets. Students learned a lot through a variety of hands on magnet experiments. They also were fortunate to see and touch a variety of different insects. This experience tied in with the Magnets unit and the Small Crawling and Flying animals unit that the Grade 2 students have been learning about in science this year. of Appreciation, written by the Grade 10 students, were given to each staff member highlighting unique qualities and contributions they make to St. Jerome’s. We, as a staff, were so touched to be treated extra special during this week and know that we have the best students anywhere. The Grade 2 and 2/3 students walked through the rain to the Vermilion Library on Wednesday morning to participate in a two-hour interactive presentation focused on insects and magnets. Students enjoyed all the hands-on activities and seeing the different insects. Elementary May Happigrams were celebrated on Thursday, May 31. Mrs. Ryan’s Grade 1 students did an amazing job performing two songs and a spring poem. Congratulations to all of this month’s winners. The elementary students, during Phys. Ed, have been preparing for our Annual Elementary Track and Field Day. They are excited for the day to happen, which will be on Friday, June 15, beginning around 10:30 a.m. Our kindergarten students are excited for the month of June. They will be celebrating everything they have learned throughout this school year with their Graduation Cele-

Public Library on May 31 for a morning of fun science activities. They enjoyed participating in hands-on experiments to explore the topic of animal adaptations. Students also worked together in small groups to design their own insect and then present it to the class. There sure were funny looking bugs. VES is excited about field trips being right around the corner. The Grade 1 students will go to the Vermilion Provincial Park, the spray park, and mini golf; Grade 2 go to the Ukrainian Cultural Village; Grade 3 travel to the Telus World of Science; Grade 4 traverse to Fort Edmonton; Grade 5 make a trip to Elk Island Park; and Grade 6 go on a two day excursion to Camp Encounter. Much fund raising has to be done to pay for the transportation costs of field trips. We would like to thank all of you who have sold and bought to allow our students such amazing opportunities. Approximately 30 people attended the event featuring the film ‘Night At The Museum’ played at the Vermilion Heritage Museum on June 1. Families and people of all ages enjoyed the unique theatrical experience surrounded by Vermilion’s historical artifacts. The concession proceeds will go to fund the museum as they rely solely on donations. “We are thankful to the community for the support, and thought it would be a fun idea to bring people into the museum. The 9th Annual Spring Bird Count took place at the Vermilion Provincial Park on May 26. Counters included Lakeland College’s Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation Instructor Chris Olsen, Leo Gustak, Caleb Corcoran, Riley Corcoran and Alyssa Metro. The group walked the shoreline trails from the west end in the morning, finishing at the Trout Pond near noon. In the afternoon they walked the CN Station area and the east end trails, and then visited the reservoir outflow area, and the north side peninsula area (access from Range Road 71). “We counted 75 species and about 998
birds! It was a pretty good day, although the winds rose a little in the late afternoon,” said Olsen. According to Olsen the results were typical. Over the years they have counted anywhere from 48-84 species, and from 724-1018 individual birds. “Variation over the years likely relates mostly to weather conditions. Since this is a single-day count we are not likely to see any clear numeric trends. Cumulatively, a count like this gives us a pretty good idea of species richness in the Park, and it is a lot of fun to do. “The west end walk in the morning, in particular, is amazing. We are in the midst of a cacophony of calls and songs, and almost continuously seeing spectacular birds like
the Baltimore Oriole, Yellow Warbler and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. On the water we hear Bitterns, Grebes, Coots and Rails, and overhead the Red-tailed Hawks scream at us as we go,” said Olsen. Olsen said that birds of interest this year included a pair of Swans seen in flight, a Black-and-white Warbler, an American Redstart, and a tagged Turkey Vulture (yellow 77A on a black tag). The most common bird the group spotted was the Red-winged Blackbird (they saw at least 158). Other common birds included Yellow Warblers, Least Flycatchers and Claycolored Sparrows. A Grazing School For Women: Multi-tasking Farm And Ranch Style!

The many hats worn by ranching and farming women across Alberta are as diverse as the province itself, and their role in the operations are rooted in history. From accounting to veterinary medicine, pasture management to mechanic, and marketing analyst to silage truck driver, the women who work on our Alberta farms and ranches are highly skilled and are experts at multi-tasking, especially if you consider many are also raising a family at the same time (add to the list caregiver, chef, shuttle driver, event organizer, etc.). Fitting in a 2 day grazing school, is not always easy, but the experience
is one that many Alberta ranch and farm women have participated in over the last number of years. For many ladies, it isn’t their first time attending a grazing school with all female participants, and several come to these events every year if they can! In 2017, The Original Grazing School for Women celebrated 15 years and it continues into its 16th year in 2018. The Southern Alberta Women’s Grazing School has been attracting women farmers and ranchers to their 2 day event for 15 years now and is set to meet new ladies and reconnect with old friends. Grazing schools, like those mentioned above, help women gain knowledge by providing a wonderful opportunity
to learn, network and socialize with other women in the agricultural industry across Alberta. Past par ticipants have indicated these schools had many values for them, including meeting other women in similar situations, sharing ideas, and building hands-on skills such as how to identify native pasture and tame forage plants, calculating sustainable stocking rates, and electric fencing techniques, plus exploring livestock health, social license and marketing for the agricultural industry. In 2018, the schools will feature such topics as calving, beef nutrition, mental health, succession planning, the verified sustainable beef program, range and riparian health, and of course grazing practices and principles. The field tours will include opportunities to see grazing and riparian management projects, and learn more about range management research. All schools are put on jointly by local rural municipalities/counties, Agricultural Research & Extension Associations, Alberta Environment and Parks, conservation groups, and Cows and F i s h. Vermilion Vipers Swim Meet

The Vermilion Vipers Swim Club held the first meet of the season for the region on May 26. “It was a great meet! Summer swimming organizations like the Vermilion Vipers are a great example of a community working together. All of the officials and helpers were volunteers; parents, grandparents, etc. both local and from the surrounding clubs. We are thankful that they all volunteered in Vermilion to create the swim meet experience for the athletes from preschool age to senior adults.
“We are incredibly proud of everyone who swam in the meet. All of our Vipers swimmers showed new times, completed new events or beat a previous time,” said Carmen Haslehurst, Vermilion Vipers Head Coach. Members continue to train Monday - Thursday until mid August. We will continue to attend swim meets at other pools in our region for the rest of the summer. “Swimming is such a great activity for all! William Brookfield is amazing on double keyboard, guitar and vocals. You’ll be amazed with his stellar recreation of songs by Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Tennessee Ernie Ford. Derek Pulliam adds stand-up bass, guitar and authentic vocals when he treats the audience to songs by classic country legends such as Lefty Frizzell and Bobby Bare. Elvis tribute artist Vic De Sousa adds another dimension to the Louisiana Hayride Show. You will be impressed with his portrayal of ‘The King’!
