Congratulations and encouragement was shared as St. Jerome’s School held their graduation ceremony at the Vermilion Regional Centre on April 26.

“The Journey Doesn’t End Here’ was the theme of the event, and as graduates approached the stage their favourite memories and plans for the future were shared. Principal Chase emceed the event, and Vice Principal MacMillan sang a special song to the class.

On behalf of Town Council, Mayor Caroline McAuley, offered her congratulations and quoted Henry Thoreau encouraging graduates to go confidently in the direction of their dreams, but encouraged them to always remember Vermilion.

“Today marks a milestone; I encourage you to explore and learn new things,” said McAuley.

“It’s a day of great celebration. It is important to acknowledge that a ‘journey’ is not just a trip or a hike; but it implies that you are going somewhere

The Vermilion Heritage Museum was thrilled to open for another season on May 22.

T h i s ye ar s eve r a l n ew d i s p l ays are in order as they help celebrate a selection of 100th Anniversaries in Vermilion including the Alberta Teacher’s Association, 100 years since the Spanish Flu, the 1918 Vermilion Fire, the Vermilion Volunteer Fire Department, and the Vermilion Legion.

According to volunteer and president of the Board of Directors, Jean Murie, the Alberta Teacher’s Association was once called the Alberta Teacher’s Alliance. The display features ‘then and now’ items including some old school rules. Differences and similarities are evident as life without Google is examined, the use of chalkboards versus laptops, and no longer teaching knitting.

“Some things haven’t gone by the wayside including Math instruments, pens, and calculators,” said Murie.

Murie found out that the Spanish Flu should have been called the Kansas Flu as during WWI a Kansas regiment got sick with most members dying.

The ones that didn’t went on to Europe and when everyone in Spain got sick, they called it the Spanish Flu.

“We don’t want another pandemic like that, and are hoping to educate people on hand washing and being clean,” said Murie.

The Vermilion Health Unit supplied current information, and a poster from 1918 - 1919 shows how there was no vaccine at the time, so people treated the symptoms of fever or pain. Some of the remedies were recognizable, and some such as poultice were perhaps unknown to younger generations.

The Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre donated a ladder truck and pump truck that will be located outside the museum throughout the summer in recognition of the 100th Anniversaries of the 1918 Fire, and the Vermilion Volunteer Fire Department.

According to Murie, the department was in existence prior to the fire, but it wasn’t very large and didn’t have a pumper truck until after.

“Back then the roads were narrow and it would have taken a while for Vegreville, Innisfree, Mannville, and Lloyd minster br ig ad es to c ome. It looks like a bomb went off in some of the photos. Notice the open cab on the ladder truck; can you imagine trying to drive that thing in the winter?” questioned Murie.

The museum has a multitude of war memorabilia along with a more recent Snelgrove display in honour of the Vermilion Legion’s 100th Anniversary. With lots to celebrate, all of the artifacts found inside the museum are interesting and worth checking out.

The Vermilion Heritage Museum will be hosting movie nights throughout the summer including an old classic outside if weather permits, and a sleepover Night at the Museum on June 1. They are also looking forward to hosting two school tours including VES and Marwayne. “ We rely solely on donations and volunteers. McDonald’s Family Foods - ALS Barbeque

On May 24, McDonald’s Family Foods in Vermilion hosted a barbeque raising $1,050 to support the Alberta ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) Society.

The McDonald Family will be joined by other Flamand Fighters team members in Edmonton on June 9, to take part in the ALS Walk. Last year, the Flamand Fighters team raised $25,000 at the walk in Edmonton and the goal this year is to beat last year’s total.

“As some of you may know, my Mom (Patsy Lee Brooks) was diagnosed with ALS in November 2016, and she fought hard but lost her battle on March 24, 2018.

It is an ugly disease and affects so many people across Alberta, Canada & the world.

Thank you to everyone that came out to support McDonald’s Family Foods first fundraising barbeque of the year, as well as the volunteers - family and friends. It was a

huge success, and your contribution truly makes a difference in the ALS community.

ALS is a rapid, always fatal neurodegenerative disease. It attacks the nerves that the body would normally use to send messages from the brain to the muscle, resulting in weakness and wasting. Eventually, the individual with ALS is left completely immobilized, with loss of speech and eventually an inability to swallow and breathe.

There is no known cause or cure for this devastating disease – yet,” said Angie McDonald.

According to walkforals.ca, 40 per cent of proceeds will fund research, and 60 per cent will support client services, as a person with ALS can require equipment and care valued at more than $240,000.

Along with other family and friends Angie’s dad, Randy Brooks, was in Vermilion for the event and said, “It’s been a perfect evening for the barbeque. We would like to thank the community for the support;

it was fantastic. I can’t say enough things about the ALS Society and how supportive they’ve been.”

Happy Harmonizers Senior Chorus And Guests

Attendees were able to escape the blazing temperatures outside during the Happy Harmonizers Senior Chorus Spring Concert on May 22.

Cheerful music filled the Senior Centre as the Happy Harmonizers along with guest appearances from ‘Touch of Brass,’ ‘Local Vocals’ quartet and ‘TNT’ quintet performed various styles of music.

Gordon Hill Emceed the evening and brought many chuckles to the audience with his wide array of jokes.

During the first set, the Happy Harmonizers Senior Chorus performed famous songs by Bing Crosby, including ‘White Christmas.’

“I know this isn’t the right season and the right temperature, but you can’t do a

Bing Crosby set without ‘White Christmas,’ so everyone can sing along,” said Conductor Irene Smith.

While their second set included three songs with silver in the title to celebrate their 25th anniversary, the remaining five songs chosen were personal favourites of the members.

“We have had a very good season, but as with all group activities we would like to see new members join,” said Happy Harmonizers Senior Chorus conductor Irene Smith.

“It’s wonderful seeing Seniors showing off their talent,” said Hill.

The Touch of Brass Handbells, Local Vocals Quartet, and TNT Quintet each performed approximately ten songs in total for their two sets giving the audience over two hours of musical talent.

Vermilion 4-H Light Horse Achievement Day

The Vermilion 4-H Light Horse Club celebrated 50 years during their Achievement Day on May 21. The club began in Vermilion during the 1967-1968 season, and this year added a driving project and two young horse projects.

Eighteen members spent the morning competing in show classes, and the afternoon competing in speed and gymkhana classes.

This year awards were presented to Emily Elder for the Most Dedicated

Member, and to Riley Baldwin (absent) for the Most Improved Rider.

“We had a very successful busy 4-H Achievement Day. Thank you to Judge Kim Eremko, Ring Master Breanne Hryhirchuk, and Announcer Alyssa. The children did an amazing job this year and have made being a leader so rewarding!” said Leader Krystal Enstrom.

The Achievement Day finished up the club’s activity in Vermilion, but members will compete in the Expo at the Lloydminster Exhibition Grounds from June 2-3.

A Beautiful Day For A Beautiful Cause-Walk For Dog Guides

With beautiful weather in their favour the Vermilion Lions Club held their annual Walk for Dog Guides event in the picturesque beauty of the Vermilion Provincial Park on Sunday, May 27, as walkers and dogs were chomping at the bit to hit the trails in support of the cause.

According to Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, the event has been carried out for more than 32 years, and the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides has been a vital national fundraiser in support of Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. The national events take place in approximately 300 communities across Canada.

The Walk raises funds to provide lifechanging Dog Guides to Canadians with

physical and medical disabilities. A family and dog-friendly event that welcomes participants of all ages and abilities, The Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides rely on the generous support of volunteers, donors, and partners to meet its goal of giving Canadians a new leash on life. Providing specially trained Dog Guides through six distinct programs meeting a wide range of needs, Dog Guides increase the independence, mobility, and safety of their handlers.

One-hundred percent of the funds raised go towards the training and placement of Dog Guides, and since 1985 they have raised more than $15 million.

R e g ar d l e s s of t h e a p p r ox i m ate $25,000 expense, it takes to raise, train, and place each dog; each eligible Canadian receives a dog guide at no cost to

them. “ We have been doing the walk here in Vermilion for the past nine years and have raised approximately $27,000; that’s the equivalent of one dog raised, trained and placed.

Vermilion RCMP have received s eve r a l r e p o r te d incidents where residents of Vermilion and the surrounding areas have been receiving calls from scam artists c l a i m i n g to b e “ G over n m e nt O f fi cials” advising they have defrauded the Government of money. The scam artists request payment be made or a warrant for your arrest will be issued or executed. They are requesting individuals to attend a local convenience store and purchase gift cards and have

the payment be made to an individual rather than the agency. These incidents are financial scams. The RCMP would like to remind citizens to check out the RCMP Scams and Frauds unit website www.antifraudcentre.ca to make themselves familiar with the active scams and frauds circulating Canada. You can also find more information about fraud scams involving the Canada Revenue Agency on their web page www.cra-arc. gc.ca/ntcs/bwr-eng.html.

Government agencies, includ ing Canada Revenue Agency, and most other legitimate corporations do not accept payment in the form of gift cards. If you receive a suspicious call,

do not take immediate action or forward money. If the caller is requesting the purchase of gift cards (such as Steam, iTunes, Google, etc.) it is highly likely to be fraudulent in nature. Take the time to verify that what you are being told is the truth. Often times scam artists will go phishing for your personal information as a form of identity theft/fraud. At times, these scam artists will be very aggressive and demanding on the phone to coerce callers into cooperating with them.

Vermilion Soccer Association (VSA) is built around player participation. The Mini age levels (age 5-11) are progressive in skill development, and positioning. The Youth age levels (age 12-19) compete in District Tier IV competition. Tier IV is non-selective with emphasis on continued skill development within a team play environment.

We often intuitively eat with the seasons.

When its winter, we love eating warm comfort foods, such as stews, macaroni and cheese and homemade soups. When summer is here, we crave more salads and raw fruits and vegetables. I love eating raw vegetables, and now many grocery stores are making them as easy to add to your diet as convenience foods.

They make up large trays of precut and washed mini carrots, celery, cauliflower,

and broccoli. Adding more raw veggies and fruits to your diet is always a great idea, but as I read the ingredient list of the veggie dips, I no longer want to buy that product. Most of them use junk oils and are chock full of chemical preservatives, thickeners and flavour enhancers. This is also often a problem with most commercial salad dressings. So while the vegetables are healthy, the vegetable dip is often questionable.

I am a big fan of homemade dips.

Use fresh sour cream for longer storage time. You can also substitute the sour cream for Greek yogurt, with active pre-biotic cultures, or do a mix of a half

a cup of Greek yogurt and a half a cup 1/2cup olive oil and canola oil mayon of sour cream. Some people prefer fatnaise free everything, but the purpose of the 1 tablespoon olive oil fat in this dip is to allow the nutrients in 2 tablespoon of finely chopped parsley the vegetables to be better absorbed by 2 teaspoons of finely chopped fresh dill your body, so feel free to use the sour or 1 teaspoon dried cream or Greek yogurt with fat instead of 3/4 teaspoon salt the fat-free version. The ingredient list for 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion or this dip is full of foods with many health green onion benefits, so feel free to enjoy it. A platter 1/4 teaspoon pepper of raw vegetable with a homemade dip is 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder a great addition to your summer entertain1 clove of garlic finely chopped ing buffet or outdoor barbeque. This dip is 1/2 teaspoon onion powder even great with taco or potato chips.

Stir all ingredients together. Allow 30 Ranch Dip minutes for flavours to blend before serv1 cup sour cream or Greek Yogurt. ing. Store refrigerated until ready to serve.

It ’s a m antr a that bec ame well engrained from the time my little household got put together in earnest, influenced perhaps, and taking advantage of, some modern initiatives on waste when we lived in the city, and leaning back on some old school ‘Depression’ era thriftiness. It was passed on from Grandpa’s and Grandma’s who well knew the value of a dollar… because they were hard to come by then, they couldn’t always go get something from the Dollar Store. They had to make do and perhaps combine that with a little bit of invention and ingenuity.

This spring the ‘reduce’ began with one of the kid’s options to do a school project demonstrating the use of less electricity.

Upcoming Lions CNIB Golf Tournament

The Vermilion Lions Club will be hosting their 21st Annual Texas Scramble Golf Tournament at the Vermilion Golf and Country Club on June 8, at 1 p.m.

The Vermilion Lions Club is thrilled to be hosting the tournament once again to support the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) and Canadians with vision loss. According to cnib.ca, one out of every six Canadians, (5.5 million) have one of four major eye diseases; glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy or macular degeneration and have either lost their sight or are at risk to in the future. They also say that every 10 minutes someone in Canada begins losing their sight, and that each year, 50,000 Canadians will lose their sight which significantly impacts their well being and quality of life.

According to CNIB, only one third of

Canadian working-age adults with vision loss are employed, and about half of the ones who are employed struggle to make ends meet on $20,000 or less. People over 60 with sight loss are three times more likely to experience clinical depression, and all people with sight loss are at greater risk of social isolation and reduced community participation.

The CNIB celebrated their 100th Anniversary this year after being founded in 1918 by veterans who were blinded in World War I and the Halifax Explosion. During their celebration on March 21, CNIB National Board Chair Ronald J. Kruzeniski said, “As we look ahead, I couldn’t be more excited as CNIB continues our work in shaping a brighter future for Canadians with sight loss. Increasing access to employment and technology, advocating for more accessible communities, connecting more Canadians with guide dogs – we are ready to take on

Privacy To support an open and transparent process, information you send to the AUC will be publicly available through the AUC’s eFiling System. If there is confidential information you would like to file, a request must be made in advance of filing your submission.

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO), under the Electric Utilities Act, previously applied for approval of a needs identification document for the Provost to Edgerton and Nilrem to Vermilion Transmission System Reinforcement to maintain the reliability of the transmission system in the area, serve load growth, and provide options for generation connection in the future. Following a full written proceeding, the Commission referred the application back to the AESO and requested the AESO incorporate the most current load and generation forecasts into the analysis of the area. The AESO reassessed the need for transmission reinforcement in the Provost to Edgerton and Nilrem to Vermilion area based upon its most current load and generation forecast information, and amended its application. The AESO’s application continues to seek approval of the need to alleviate identified constraints in the area.

The transmission development being proposed in the current needs identification document includes the following major components: • A new 144-kilovolt (kV) substation, to be called Drury 2007S Substation, expandable to 240-kV, in the vicinity of the existing Vermilion 710S Substation (Legal Subdivision 5 and Legal Subdivision 12 of 32-50-6-W4).

• Connect the proposed Drury 2007S Substation to the existing 138-kV transmission line 7L65 via an in-andout configuration, renaming the segment of 7L65 between Drury 2007S Substation and Vermilion 710S Substation as 7L205.

• A new 240-kV single-circuit transmission line, to be initially operated at 138-kV, from the existing Nilrem 574S Substation (Legal Subdivision 15 of 9-42-9-W4) to the proposed Drury 2007S Substation.

• A new 240-kV single-circuit transmission line, to be initially operated at 138-kV, from the existing Hansman Lake 650S Substation (SE-1-40-5-W4) to the Killarney Lake 267S Substation T-tap point on transmission line 749AL. • Relocate the connection of the 749AL T-Tap from 749L to the new line described above.

The AESO also proposed the following transmission development: • A new 240-kV single-circuit transmission line, to be initially operated at 138-kV, from the existing Edgerton 899S Substation to the Killarney Lake 267S Substation T-tap point (749AL).

This development would be triggered if: • The AESO’s coincident summer aggregate peak load forecast reaches the existing capacity of transmission line 749L. • Construction commences for generation projects along transmission line 749L’s path that gives rise to congestion under Category A conditions on transmission line 749L. • FortisAlberta Inc. withdraws or cancels the system access service request for AESO Project 1782.

The AESO also applied to amend Needs Identification Document (NID) Approval U2013-130 to delete the approved components outlined in paragraphs 3 and 4 of Stage 1 with respect to the transmission development in the Provost and Wainwright areas, and paragraph 1 under Stage 2 with respect to rebuilding the existing transmission line 7L50.

The AESO also requested approval to change the component outlined in paragraph 5b of Stage 1 of NID Approval U2013-130. The original paragraph proposed the restoration of transmission lines 7L14 and 7L701. The AESO is no longer seeking the restoration of transmission line 7L14.

The map indicates the general area where the transmission development is proposed. However, the exact routes and sites for the proposed transmission facilities are not determined and may extend beyond the areas shown.

The Commission may make its decision without further notice or process if no written submissions are received.

Submissions must include your name, address, phone number, legal land location, description of your land in relation to the proposed development and a description of your interest in the land, your business, or your activities which may be affected by the proposed project. Please also briefly describe the issues you would like the AUC to consider when making its decision.

By purchasing a paper teddy, the purchaser is entered into the draw for the first place prize of the 30” plush teddy which is on display at the branch and the 2nd place prize of a 1 pound chocolate bar.

As par t of t he fun dr ai sing, ATB employees had the opportunity to wear jeans for the whole month of May once they donated $20, and the branch is also selling chocolate bars for $3. ATB also collects donated hard and soft cover books throughout the year to sell

and donates the proceeds of the book sales to ‘Teddy for a Toonie’ campaign.

“It was a great breakfast! We had a lot of people attend and numerous companies pre-ordered. The weather was great compared to last year; it was a huge success and a lot of fun, it is nice to be able to have the opportunity to visit with people outside of banking conversations. I would like to say thank you to everyone who supported our fundraiser,” said Tennant.

4-H members were eager to present their steers, heifers, donkeys, engineering, baking, and even snowmobile projects during the Clandonald 4-H Multi Club Achievement Day. T h e A c h i eve m e n t D ay, h e l d o n Saturday, May 26, star ted of f at 1 p.m. with the 4-H pledge, and then quickly moved on to the events, which included: Junior, Intermediate, Senior G r o o m i n g , J u n i o r, I n t e r m e d i a t e , Senior Steer Class, Yearling Heifer Class, 3-year old Cow/Calf, Overall Female, Junior, Intermediate, Senior, and Overall Showmanship.

The donkey, engineering, baking, and snowmobile also presented their projects throughout the day.

SIX RENOVATION PROJECTS: TO TACKLE DURING THE SUMMER The sunny season is finally back! With its high temperatures and long, clear days, summer is the perfect time of year to tackle those outstanding tasks that you’ve been “meaning” to get around to. Take advantage of the pleasant days ahead to accomplish these six home renovation projects.

1. Repave the driveway If your driveway is in (very) bad condition and showing signs of wear like cracks or crevasses, it’s high time to take action. Did you know that summer is the best season to repave? Indeed, high outdoor temperatures are necessary to achieve optimal results that will stand the test of time. So, give your driveway some much-needed attention this summer!

2. Repair the roof It’s a fact: bad weather (rain, wind,

snow, ice, etc.) can cause serious damage to your roof. This summer, enlist the help of a professional to determine if your roof is in need of repairs (or a complete overhaul). Have your roofer check for damaged or missing shingles, mould, clogged gutters, etc. Regular inspections are essential to prevent water leaks and other inconveniences that can result from poor roof maintenance.

3. Replace the windows and doors Are you all too familiar with infiltration (water or air) or insulation problems? If your windows and doors have served their time, or if you simply wish to modify the look of your home with newer units, keep in mind that summer is the ideal time to replace them. In addition to not having to worry about heat

loss, you won’t have to sacrifice home comfort during the installation phase since outside temperatures are (almost) always agreeable at this time of year.

If your windows and doors don’t need replacing, take advantage of the warmer days to make them sparkle.

Customers enjoyed pork on a bun, drinks, and a selection of home-baked goods and the proceeds contributed to dif ferent projects in Vermilion. Half of the proceeds from the day went to support the ‘Friends of Vermilion Elementary S c ho ol,’ and throug h the Wester n Communities Foundation, the other half will help fund projects in Vermil-

ion.

Branch Manager, Melissa Young said, “We really appreciate the support that the community has given us over the years. Because of the suppor t towards the Western Communities Foundation, we have been able to give scholarships and infrastructure grants within Vermilion.

MP Stubbs’ Rural Crime Motion Gains All-Party Support

Submitted Ottawa, ON—On Thursday, Conservative Member of Parliament Shannon Stubbs completed the second hour of debate for Motion 167 and it’s scheduled for voting on this Wednesday, May 30. MP Stubbs first introduced the motion in the House of Commons on February 1st and spoke in the first hour of debate on March 28.

Motion 167 calls on the Public Safety and National Security Committee to assess rural crime rates and trends across

Canada. The committee will be able to provide concrete recommendations to take real action against rural crime across Canada, RCMP staff resources and policies in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities. MP Stubbs accepted NDP amendments to include measures to increase the tactical and operational effectiveness of Indigenous police forces, strategies and resources for rural judicial and rehabilitation systems, and improved support for rural crime victims across Canada.

“My constituents feel like ‘sitting ducks’

and that being robbed is inevitable. They are vulnerable because of long response times and a lack of visible law enforcement presence due to unique rural policing challenges and understaffed detachments. The reality is rural crime is escalating, and must be combated in joint efforts by all governments,” says MP Stubbs.

Motion 167 has 101 endorsements from local crime watch groups, provincial MLAs, municipalities and major municipal associations in seven provinces, including the Alberta Provincial Rural Crime

Watch Association, Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties, and the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities, Association of Manitoba Municipalities. Hundreds more Canadians contacted me in support.

For many businesses, attending a 4-H sale is an annual event to look forward to, and they may use the beef themselves, share with employees, or even gift meat packages to their top clients.

A 4-H steer is arguably the most

Congratulations to the 30 amazing young adults who graduated from St. Jerome’s this past weekend. We are so proud of everything you have accomplished during your time at St. Jerome’s and are honoured to celebrate with you. The Graduation Celebrations began on Thursday, May 24 with the In-School Graduation Ceremony as well as Cap and Gown pictures. As our Grade 12 Spartans entered the gym, they were welcome with “high fives” from staff members who have seen them grow from kindergarten students to the fine young adults they have become. The graduates were introduced by Mrs. Krys and Mr. Martin as they came onto the stage. Mme. Fraser began the ceremony with a touching prayer followed by Cheradyn Bessette singing “O Canada.” Mrs. Sanson presented Shae Collins representing the graduation class with a donation of $200 towards another stained glass window on behalf of the Catholic Women’s League. Malcolm Sacer acknowledged our staff and spoke about the influence they have had shaping these wonderful young “heroes.” followed

M r s . To d h a s told us the swimming lessons, and field trips have been amazing for her kindergarten class. In the pool, the kinders have been practicing front and back floats, glides and submerging their faces and blowing bubbles. On their field trips, the kinders have been excellent representatives of Mannville School.

They have been active listeners and have asked excellent questions to their tour guides. They have been enjoying eating their lunches in the college cafeteria and at the small park by the pool.

Staff, students, and visitors enjoyed our school Talent Show emceed by Kaeli Wyard Scott and Baylee Strowger.

Thank you to all the participants.

Grade 9 students have been given an opportunity to travel to Camp Warwa.

Mrs. Wagner is so excited to go with the kids! Canoe, wall climbing, low and high ropes, zip climbing and capture the flag!

It will be an adventure all of them will look back on.

St. Jerome’s School News

ended with a slide show of photographed moments from their high school career and as babies. Graduation Day, May 26, began with a beautiful Mass led by Father Roger at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, with the highlight being the exchange of light from the Graduating student to a sibling or other student at St. Jerome’s. A delicious supper was enjoyed by all at the elegantly decorated Regional Centre followed by the official ceremony. The Graduating Class of 2018 looked stunning in their gorgeous dresses and formal suits as they were introduced to the stage by Mrs. Krys and Mr. Martin. This year’s theme “The Journey Doesn’t End Here” was expressed as guest speaker, Mrs. Kristen Clarke, shared words of wisdom and inspiration and Valedictorian, Jennifer Peterson, shared insightful thoughts with the graduates. The ceremony ended with Mr. Chase presenting each graduate with their diploma. The evening ended with the Grand March, giving those attending one more time to celebrate and honour these amazing young people and all they have accomplished. Thank you to Mrs. Forsyth and Mr. MacMillan for helping the students organize this incredible day.

High School Student Council speeches and election took place on Wednesday, May 23. Each candidate was given a chance to share their vision of what they would do if they were voted on the council. The student body voted choosing their 2018-2019 Student Council. Congratula-

story books. Illustrations were drawn and coloured to go along with a chosen scripture reading. Last week they shared their stories with the elementary classes.

Congratulations to our Jr. High Track and Field team who participated in the Highway 16 Championships at J.R. Robson on Thursday, May 24. Many of our Spartan athletes won their events and performed their personal best. Vermilion Elementary School News

VES will be hosting Indigenous Culture Day on June 1. We would like to thank Kevin John for arranging this special day for us. A Pow Wow dancing demonstration will take place from 10:30-11:30, featuring at least four of the Indigenous dance styles. The afternoon will consist of eight “Cultural Immersion stations” that the students will proceed through at 20 minute intervals.

These will feature Bannock making (and

tasting), Cree language, storytelling, Indigenous artifacts, jingle dress and chicken dance presentations, and traditional healing songs.

Mr. Haslehurst’s Grade 4A students were programming Dash (a movable robot) to travel from Vermilion to the Canadian Shield region and arrive in Alberta’s capital city. The activity integrated both Math and Social Studies. Students tracked the distance traveled during the trip. They also recorded messages about the geographical features such as climate, vegetation,

and landforms of the region. Along the way, Dash would stop and talk about the geography of the area.

Throughout May, many Grade 6 students have attended VIBE’s Study Hall. They took place during lunch recesses in the Learning Commons and after school in the J.R. Robson VIBE Office. This provided an opportunity for students to practice study skills in preparation for Provincial Achievement Tests.

In science, Grade 6 students have been learning about the properties of fight and about Bernoulli’s principle.

They each had the opportunity to make airplanes and then they used those planes to see if they could make them fly straight, turn left or right, or fly far.
