Vermilion Wellness Coalition’s Golf Day

Several children braved cooler temperatures on May 17, to attend a free family event sponsored by the Vermilion Wellness Coalition including golf lessons, Frisbee golf and mini golf.

Morning instructions and time at the driving range took place at the Vermilion Golf and Country Club, followed by an afternoon of Frisbee golf and mini golf at the Vermilion Provincial Park. Children were overjoyed to be outdoors, and Lorne and Lyn McCulley from Kitimat, British Columbia even enjoyed a round of mini-golf with their grandson,

Alex McCulley, in Vermilion.

“The Wellness Coalition appreciates the investment that Cam Golby and the Vermilion Golf and Country Club makes each year by offering this free opportunity for children and families to try the sport of golf. Playing golf has the potential to be a lifelong activity which meets our coalition’s goal to help people develop healthy behaviors that can become part of a lifestyle of wellness,” said Wellness Coalition member, Shawn Bell.

“I think it was great having the children out even though it was a little cool,” said Vermilion Golf and Country Club’s General Manager, Cam Golby.

Local Special Olympics Athletes Seek Support

To assist local Special Olympics athletes attending the Alberta Winter Games you can visit the Vermilion Cornerstone Co-op Food Store on May 26, from 11:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.

The upcoming fundraiser will include a barbeque and a bottle drive, with the option of bringing your bottles or calling 780-787-0694 for pick-up.

The Vermilion-Vegreville Polecats Special Olympics Floor Hockey Team qualified at a tournament in Edmonton in November, and will be travelling to the Alberta Winter Games in Calgary in February of 2019. The team also won gold medals at a tournament in Spruce Grove in March. Team members from Vermilion include Captain Justin Wolgien, and Goalie David Rein who

Both Justin Wolgien and David Rein have worked in Vermilion for several years and are beside themselves at the opportunity to compete at the first Alberta Games to celebrate 50 years of Special Olympics.

The team would like to get matching coats and pants as they will be doing a grand entry, and are in desperate need of equipment bags. According to Wolgien, many of the team members are in supportive housing, and some show up with equipment in grocer y bags, so equipment keeps getting lost.

This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the Vermilion & Area Brighter Beginnings program Brighter Beginnings was conceptualized in 1997 in response to a grant from the Provincial Government for Early Intervention and Headstart services within the community of Vermilion. This endeavor was spearheaded by Julie Evans and Elsie Pawlak and together with numerous stakeholders they created a program that would benefit with no exaggeration hundreds of children and families for many, many years to come!

Town Council – Community Member Recognized For Saving A Senior

The first order of business during the Town Council Meeting in Vermilion was the Mayor signing a proclamation declaring Senior’s Week in Vermilion to be June 3 – 9. It was also said that a $5 barbeque will be held at the Vermilion Senior’s Centre gazebo on June 5.

Presenters noted that the event is to encourage people to have a good time and feel special and that the nearby Museum will also be open this year.

According to the speaker, Senior’s Week is an opportunity to go the extra mile to open a door for a senior or show your appreciation; noting that our seniors are a lot of fun and wonderful cooks.

Vermilion Senior’s Center Executive Assistant, Dianne Dunn, was honoured by being presented with a certificate from MLA Dr. Richard Starke and a plaque from Mayor Caroline McAuley on behalf of Council and the Town of Vermilion for her efforts in helping to save a man’s life.

On March 28, residents from Elk Point, Kitscoty, Wainwright, Irma, Kinsella, Viking, Mundare, Myrnam, Mannville, and Vermilion took part in the Vermilion Senior’s Centre’s Floor Curling WindUp. According to Dianne Dunn, while preparing dinner for 75 people, someone hollered her name, and by the time she got to the gentleman from Irma, he was turning purple. She could not get the automated external defibrillator to work so while Glen Wood performed mouth to mouth, she kept watching the clock and performing chest compressions for 12 minutes.

“All I could think of during those 12 minutes was my daughter who passed from a heart attack on December 29.

People said to let him go, but I kept going until the ambulance got there,” said Dunn.

The gentleman was taken by air ambulance to Edmonton in severe critical condition where he had four stents put in before returning home.

“I ached for three days after but was so glad I could be there to help him; he will be alive to see his 82nd birthday and 60th wedding anniversary in July. I have called and visited him and saw photographs from his surgery. The things they can do now are miraculous,” said Dunn.

During her presentation, Mayor Caroline McAuley said, “Everyone needs to know CPR because you never know when you might need it.”

In response Dunn concluded, “Thank you, It means a lot to me. They’re just like family to me now, often getting together for coffee.”

In other council news, a motion was carried for a $4,000 sponsorship to Feast on the Farm.

“I think it is a great event showcasing Vermilion and fundraising for student scholarships,” said Mayor McAuley.

In Transpor tation and Utilities, a motion was carried for Council to award the 2018 Water Main Improvement Program Contract to Rusway Construction Ltd. for a total of $220,300.50 plus GST and a 10 per cent contingency.

Another motion was carried for Council to accept the quote from Glover International Trucks to supply one 2019 International 7500 Tandem Axle Truck with a Monroe Plow for a total of $165,722.64 plus fees and taxes and an additional $5,000 plus taxes for modifications.

Another motion was carried for Council to accept the quote from Industrial

Machine to supply one RPM 220 – Tier 3 loader-mounted snow blower for $134,155 plus fees and taxes.

The motion for the Street Improvement Program was tabled due to a discrepancy with possibly being over budget.

In Planning and Development, a motion was carried to have the Council for the Town of Vermilion authorize the reduction of lot prices in the Yellowhead Industrial Park from $160,000 per acre to $99,000 per acre effective immediately and extending until December 31, 2018. Sales of the lots will be conditional upon the proposal of the commencement of construction of an

appropriate building within six months and the title of the land will remain in the Town’s name until the lot is paid in full and the foundation is completed.

Councillor McCullough said, “I think the perception is that our focus has been on the downtown. There are a lot of full-time jobs that could come out of this. I hope this will do what Economic Development hopes it will do.”

So what does that mean for us, well it’s just as it states, prepaying for fuel may include: paying at the pump, paying the attendant before fueling, preauthorizing a debit or credit card, leaving cash with the attendant before fueling or having an account at the fuel outlet.

Some folks will get their knickers in a knot regarding how it is inconvenient for the customer, but I think that is a bunch of hogwash. How is paying for your gas upfront inconvenient? I love it! I go to the gas station stick my debit card in the pump and viola it’s paid for and ready to pump; it takes a lot less time doing it that way then going inside, standing in

line and waiting; truthfully I’m way too impatient for that foolishness. I like how quick I can get my fuel and get out of there by paying at the pump. Now you may ask what if the gas station doesn’t have the pay at the pump and I pay with cash but don’t use the amount I gave; then I have to go back inside to get the change. Well, the way I look at that is you have 1 of 2 choices; you can enjoy the exercise you are getting walking back in, or you can pay for a little less fuel then you think you will need, pretty simple.

Vermilion RCMP April Report

an erratic driver on Highway 16. Members located the suspect vehicle, and an impaired investigation was initiated. As a result of the investigation, 50-year old David Whitford of Vermilion, Alberta was charged was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and operation of a motor vehicle over .08. Whitford was released from custody on a Promise to Appear in Vermilion Provincial Court.

This matter remains before the courts.

Vermilion RCMP were on patrol and located a stolen vehicle parked in Vermilion, Alberta. An investigation was initiated into the stolen vehicle. As a result of the investigation, 29-year-old Trina Morin of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan,

24-year-old Jordan Peterson of Birch Hills, Saskatchewan and 22-year-old Tristen Smith of Birch Hills, Saskatchewan were charged with a variety of of fences. O f fences included identity fraud, obstructing a police officer, possession of stolen proper ty over $5000 and failing to comply with various conditions imposed on them. This matter remains before the courts.

Vermilion RCMP received a complaint of suspicious people on a rural property. Members attended and located the individuals in a broken down vehicle.

Further investigation revealed the plate did not match the vehicle and search of the vehicle revealed a sawed off firearm

and drug paraphernalia. As a result of the investigation, four individuals were charged with a variety of offences including possession of a prohibited weapon with ammunition, failing to comply with conditions imposed on them, possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, and weapon possession contrary to order. The individuals charged are 31-year old Chadwich Ludviksen of North Battleford, Saskatchewan, 30 -yearold Allysa Bear of North Battleford, Saskatchewan, and 23-year-old Donne Okanee of Thunderchild First Nation, Saskatchewan. The fourth individual is a youth who cannot be named. This matter remains before the courts.

The Innisfree - Minburn 4 - H Beef Club held their May meeting in Innisfree on May 9.

This is a great summer cake. It is a stunning four layer cake. It belonged to an era, when there was a special pride in home baking, and showcasing your cake on a footed plate. This cake looks as good as it tastes. A reader asked me about the origins of Hummingbird cake. It comes from Jamaica. It is a ver y popular cake in the Caribbean and the southern United States. When I saw a photo of this cake, and heard how popular it is, I was curious and intrigued. I had to make it, and I am glad I did. The results are well worth the effort and memorable. It is like a carrot cake, minus the carrot and it adds in banana and pineapple instead.

I have had requests for this recipe, so here it is, and even better it is a great one that works in our altitude. If you can’t have dairy, sub out the butter for coconut oil, and use a regular icing with coconut oil as well, or do a seven minute frosting. It would be perfect for this great vintage cake. If you can have dairy, then the cream cheese icing is the bomb.

Hummingbird Cake 1 cup room temperature butter 1 1/2 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 cup crushed pineapple, with the juice 2 teaspoons vanilla 2/3 cup chopped nuts, walnuts, pecans 2 cups finely chopped banana 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon ginger Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Prepare two round 8-inch cake pans by lining the bottom and side with wax paper, cut off any additional paper that hangs over the pan edge. Using an electric egg beater, cream together the butter and the sugar. Beat in the eggs.

Beat in the vanilla, crushed pineapple, and chopped nuts. Stir in the chopped banana. In a separate bowl combine the flour, spices, salt, baking powder and baking soda. Mix the flour mixture well and pour it into the butter mixture and then mix it in until just well blended.

Do not over mix. Pour cake batter into your two prepared cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean. Allow the cake to completely

cool before icing with cream cheese icing. If you use A 9 inch round baking pans the cooking time may be shorter.

Cream Cheese Icing 2 packages of room temperature cream cheese (can be low fat) 1/2 cup room temperature butter 2 cups icing sugar 2 teaspoon vanilla U s i n g a n e l e c t r i c m i xe r, c r e a m together the cream cheese and the butter, add the vanilla and the icing sugar.

Assembling the Cake To make this into a four layer cake, using a serrated knife, cut each of the cooled cakes in half so that you end up with four separate round cakes. Put the rounded top to the bottom of the plate, the two flat side together and finish with the other rounded top, at the top of the cake. Use the cream cheese icing between each layer, and finish the cake by icing the top and the sides.

Fostering Entrepreneurs In Vermilion

A “What is an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem?” lunch and learn session was held at Lakeland College Vermilion’s Renewable Energy Learning Centre on May 17.

The event was hosted by Community Futures Lloydminster and Region as well as the Lloydminster DreamForest. Speaker, Glenys Reeves, said that business planning has changed from a community perspective and discussed what you need to build a strong entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Attending an international business incubator conference in Seattle, Reeves learned ‘the rainforest concept’ and now avoids following the standard industrial revolution models.

“Different and wild ideas can be the ones that really take off into an amazing business,” said Reeves.

Community Futures representative, Diane Harms envisions the Renewable Energy Learning Centre as a co-working space for entrepreneurs to come and seek support.

“One of the neat things about this space is the nearby rough manufacturing and prototyping capabilities. The circuit board printer is really unlimited in terms of people’s imaginations. As people need more advanced models, we have contacts they can use and we look forward to more robust services in the fall,” said Harms.

Olaf The Owl May Soon Be Released

Olaf The Owl, who was rescued near Vermilion in 2015, is soon ready to be released from the rehabilitation centre in Edmonton.

S i n c e h av i n g o n e o f h i s w i n g s impaled on a barbed wire fence, Olaf has resided at WILDNorth - the Northern Alberta Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre. In the beginning of his treatment, Olaf was bandaged requiring wound management three times per day. He even under went laser therapy in an attempt to break down scar tissue that had built up on the patagial ligament of his injured wing.

Director of Wildlife Ser vices, Kim Blomme, originally said, “His will to

live was strong and he was very feisty.”

She feels that Olaf has been flying bet ter in the last few months and is once again contemplating releasing him.

“We would likely release him on-site so we could potentially keep an eye on him. As he was a young bird coming in, I think it unlikely that he would attempt to return but he may just disappear too - it’s hard to say. We have not kept an owl this long before so it’s hard to predict. He has remained quite wild so I have no fear of him being habitu ated. ESSENTIAL SUMMER HOME IMPROVEMENT TIPS (NC) Last year we saw record rainfall in many par ts of Canada over the warmer months. Before the first summer storm hits this year, take some time to protect your property against flooding.

Protect doors and windows. Put weather protection sealant around basement windows and the base

of ground-level doors. Install flood shiel d s or barr ier s for basement windows and doors, making sure the tops of the shields extend above ground level.

Safeguard water systems. Install backwater valves or plugs for drains, toilets and other sewer connections.

Make sure your sump pump is work-

ing and install a batter y-operated backup, in case of a power failure.

Facilitate drainage. Water should drain away from your property and neighbouring properties. Check that your roof and eaves are draining properly in heav y rains and make sure downspouts extend at least two metres away from your basement wall.

Prepare for flooding. Raise large appliances, furnaces, hot water heaters and electrical panels up on wood or cement blocks above the potential water level. If an item can’t be raised, consider anchoring it and protecting it with a floodwall or shield. Move

furniture, valuables and electronics to the safest place in your property that is least likely to be affected by flooding.

Add some greener y. Consider planting a “rain garden” by using landscaping as way to catch and disperse water in the soil near your property. Use native plants and vegetation that will resist soil erosion.

Check outdoor grading. Make sure that your lot is properly graded. If possible, build up the ground around your property so that water can drain away from basement walls.

Barrel Racing Clinic At Little Cowpokes

The rain outside didn’t seem to put a damper on the moods of the girls participating in a Barrel Racing clinic on Thursday, May 17. The clinic is held yearly by the Cowpokes Association, and one of 10 taught by Rebecca Beebe, who comes from Islay, Alberta.

The four girls that par ticipated in the clinic had the opportunity to practice some slow work, mostly learning the barrel pattern and controlling their horse, but they also made some lifelong friends according to Beebe.

“I love it. This is a great group of kids, and they’re anxious to learn.

Ever y clinic is an adventure and a

c h a n c e t o l e a r n s o m e t h i n g n ew,” says Beebe when asked if she enjoys teaching youth about riding and barrel racing.

With the girls coming from Wainwright, Hayter, and even Saskatoon, the Barrel Racing clinic was a great kickoff to the summer rodeo season.

July 1 – 2 is the first full rodeo in Vermilion, and another will come July 24, but for now, the girls just focussed on practicing their riding and having fun.

The clinic was held at the Equine C e n t r e a t L a ke l a n d C o l l e g e, a n d Beebe says, “We’re so grateful to be able to use the facility. It’s awesome that we’re able to ride no matter what the weather is like outside.”

U9 First Soccer Game

The U9 Lighting Strikers and The Red Dragons battled it out during their first game of the season while family members and friends cheered them on from the sideline.

“The children are really excited to back out on the field having some friendly competition,” said mom Lea-Anne Fraser. The Red Dragons won the game with a score of 3-2.

A Greenhouse For Kaiel - A Little Warrior’s Fight For A Normal Life

For most people, tending a garden is a pastime that has therapeutic benefits and yields tasty and fresh rewards in the spring and summer time. For six-yearold Kaiel Morritt (pronounced like “Kale”) and his family, their garden is tremendously more than a pastime. Kaiel’s life depends on home-grown produce.

Kaiel and his family live near Vermilion, where the growing season is 100 days and temperatures are still in the negatives well into spring. Their rural town is about two hours east of Edmonton (the nearest “big” city), and the family struggles with finding Kaiel’s necessary diet requirements at the local grocery stores. On top of the short growing season, the weather in the spring and summer can be unpredictable with hail storms in June and frost permeating the soil as early as August.

Kaiel was only three when his mother and father, Kim and Brian Morritt, took him to a naturopathic doctor because re g ular d o c tor s c oul d n’ t treat t h e constant stomach pain that Kaiel was experiencing daily. Kaiel’s pain caused him to scream throughout the night, from 7p.m. to sometimes four or five in the morning. At first, Kaiel’s parents thought he was just a colicky baby, but when his incessant crying through the night continued on into his toddler years, they knew something was wrong. The naturopath the Morritts took Kaiel to decided to try him on the simplified carbohydrate diet. This worked for two months before Kaiel’s pain returned. Kim says that most of Kaiel’s pain comes from his intestinal area but sometimes Kaiel will break out in hives if his body doesn’t agree with something he eats.

After years of experimenting with different types of foods, Kim and Brian have reduced Kaiel’s diet to only include fresh fruits and vegetables, grilled meats, herbs and rice. Kaiel can’t eat store-bought food and has severe reactions when he eats anything with sugar, gluten, dairy or starch. Kim thinks that preservatives are the main culprit for Kaiel’s reactions and most food items in grocery stores have some type of preservative in them. Vegetables that Kaiel can eat have to be cooked in order to not upset his stomach so most meals require ample prep time. He also can’t have leftovers because he has reactions to histamines that accumulate in leftover food. Kim and Brian have their different roles in all the food preparation, Kim

does most of the growing and Brian does the canning and is the head chef. During the day Brian does IT in the nearby town, but at night he is a food connoisseur and has figured out how to make meals taste good when no one can eat starch, sugar, dairy or gluten. Some of Brian’s accomplishments include homemade ketchup, BBQ sauce and taco mix.

Kaiel’s sensitivities extend beyond food as well. Temperature, scented products (like soap, perfume, shampoo, etc.), bug bites and even being in situations that make him overly excited, trigger what are described as “pain attacks”.

Kaiel has to wear a face mask to when he’s away from his house or his mother’s photography studio. He hates wearing it so his siblings yell, “activate the face shield!” when they have to put it on him.

Kaiel was admitted to the hospital after seeing Santa two Christmas’s ago because the experience was just too much for his fragile health. Unfortunately, Last Christmas, Kaiel was hospitalized but Santa did come visit him in the hospital. Kaiel’s family has to be careful not to bring foreign contaminants into their house so Kaiel’s older siblings aren’t allowed to participate in extracurricular activities with other kids.

Fortunately, Kim’s job as a photographer allows her to work in a private studio away from potential contaminants and Kaiel and his siblings have access to at-home education programs.

To this day doctors still can’t accurately diagnose Kaiel’s rare sickness so Kim simply describes her son’s condition as his “allergy to life”. On the bright side, doctors have now found a combination of antihistamines that help stabilize his symptoms as long as his triggers are avoided.

To suppor t Kaiel’s sensitive diet, the Morritts maintain a 100ft x 200ft garden three miles down the road from their home. The plants and the ground around them can’t be sprayed with any herbicides or pesticides so Kaiel’s family hand-weeds the whole garden to upkeep their crops. Some of the crops they grow in their family garden include: apples, tomatoes, lettuce, strawberries, raspberries, corn, peas, herbs, phacelia, borage and clover. In order to prepare for last year’s winter season, the family canned 100 pounds of raspberries, 100 pounds of strawberries and 140 cans of applesauce (without added sugar of course) from their garden. Kim and Brian keep bee hives in their garden because honey is a sweetener that Kaiel can tolerate.

During the winter, when her outdoor garden is covered in snow, Kim tends what she calls her basement “grow-op”.

In their basement, the Morritts prepare vegetables for the next year’s outdoor growing season including: 55 trays that contain peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, celery and tomatoes. There are also two trays of micro greens and one tray of lettuce. During these winter months Kaiel is regularly admitted to the hospital because he has no access to fresh fruits and vegetables and relies on canned food. Kim’s most recent indoor growing project has been attempting to reverse the fruiting season of her strawberry plants so that Kaiel has access to fresh strawberries in the Winter.

The summer is when Kaiel is the healthiest because he has access to a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Through it all Kaiel sports a big smile and lives up to his name which means, “little warrior”. He loves to be read to and watch movies with his family (he loves Star Wars). Kaiel still remembers what pumpkin pie tastes like from when his diet wasn’t so restrictive, so his parent’s try and satisfy his sweet tooth with rice pancakes sweetened with honey. His siblings eat the same diet as Kaiel so that no one feels left out, meaning the Morritts’ can’t spend Christmas or other holidays with extended family because Kaiel can’t eat holiday food. On Christmas three years ago, instead of feasting on holiday treats, the family traveled to Corpus Christi, Texas and camped together on Padre Island. Fresh air and food cooked over a campfire are safe for Kaiel, so most of the Morritts’ vacations involve camping of some sort.

Kaiel’s situation has made the Morritt family exceptionally tight knit and all his siblings work hard to protect Kaiel while also making sure that Kaiel feels like he has a normal childhood.

After a Summer hailstorm decimated the Morritt’s pea crop last June, Kim reached out to us for help. Ceres Greenhouse Solutions and Kim agreed that a greenhouse would not only protect their vegetables from rogue hail storms in the summer but would also provide a year-round growing environment that would thrive when the temps reach -40 degrees celsius in the Winter. Kim and Brian want to build the greenhouse in their garden but they don’t have access to power there so the greenhouse has to be as energy-efficient as possible and will ideally run entirely on wind and solar energy. This greenhouse goal coincides with Brian’s dream to build acreage that is 100 per cent sustainable. We provided the Morritt’s with free DIY greenhouse construction drawings to get their project started but they need more help if they are to fully fund a greenhouse project for Kaiel. We believe Kaiel’s health will drastically improve if the Morritt’s have access to a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the year. Also, Kaiel will be safe in the warm environment of the greenhouse and will be able to join his family outside in the Winter time. No more frozen berries, no more canned apple sauce and no more tears over ruined plants.

Kitscoty 4H Beef Club Report May 2018

This year our club tour was on April 15.

We spent the day touring around all the calves and trying to see which one we thought would win Grand Champion on Achievement Day. There was so many great calves we couldn’t agree which one would win!

The next weekend was the groom-

ing clinic at the Lloydminster Exhibition.

Kaleen Harris taught us how to wash, clip and groom our calves. We learned a lot. The next day was the Nelson Lumber Judging Competition. We judged flowers, forages, beef bulls, light horses, beef heifers and Australian Shepard dogs. Many of the members placed in their respective divisions.

Our spring fundraiser once again this

year was flower sales. A big thank you to Green Jay Greenhouses and F’Laura n Company Greenhouses for providing us with beautiful flowers to sell. Our fundraiser was very successful!

All the members are preparing for our Achievement Days at this busy time of year.

As I mentioned in our last report, this year we are combining with the Marwayne 4H Club to have a regional show. Our Club

Achievement Day will be on June 9th, 2018.

The district show will be called the Highway 897 Regional Show and will held together with the Marwayne 4H Club in Kitscoty on June 13th, 2018. Show will start at 12 noon, supper will be at 5pm and calves will sell after supper. We invite everyone to come for supper and bid on some delicious 4H Beef in the sale. Come join us for an awesome day!

Vermilion CLASS is hosting “The Great CLASSroom Escape” fundraiser Monday - Thursday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. as well as some evenings and weekends throughout May. The proceeds will be going towards c o m p u ter s fo r t h e c l a s s r o o m a n d programming. CLASS offers a variety of adult learning, English language l e ar n i n g, a n d a R hy m e a n d R e ad Family Literacy program. They focus

on foundational learning programs and community capacity building.

J e r o m e ’s h a s the BEST CARETAKERS in the World, and we love to show them how much we appreciate them, so on Wednesday, May 16, we all worked together to clean the school and gave them the day off. During the last two periods of the day staff and students pitched in so Ernie and Dorothy Decker could have the afternoon and evening off. Everyone helped by cleaning classrooms, sweeping floors, mopping floors and vacuuming rugs. We cannot say thank you enough to Mr. and Mrs. Decker, but we hope they know how much we appreciate them for everything they do to make St. Jerome’s an extra special school.

It was a wonderful day for the St. Jerome’s Jr. High Track and Field Day. The events started at 10 a.m. and ran throughout the day. Those students who placed in the top spots for each event will advance to participate at the Highway 16 Championships and the

Vermilion Nordic Ski Windup

The Vermilion Nordic Ski club wrapped up the season on April 29 with a tasty potluck and awards celebration plus, picking up garbage in the park.

Vaughn Cooper was awarded “ The indomitable spirit” trophy, named so in honour of the late Walter Scott. A champion in his own right, Vaughn has been the driving force behind Vermilion Nordic’s development of cross-country skiing, volun-

teering innumerable hours over the years.

Known for his skill, knowledge, and willingness to help with any issues that arise in the ski community many of the skiers under Vaughn tutelage have gone on to become accomplished racers. Of late, Sean Ulrich, Sam and Calab Ree have competed successfully in provincial and national competitions. More importantly, nearly all of the young athletes who’ve worked with Vaughn over the years speak to the enjoyment he instilled in them for the sport, and

how it ensured that they now make crosscountry skiing a part of their lives.

The club also had a very successful year promoting Jackrabbits, attending loppets, and cross-country skiing in the Vermilion Provincial Park. This year’s distance challenge goal was to ski 8,411 kilometers all the way to “Pyeongchang” home of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Leading the pack in the distance challenge was Sam Ree who skied 935 kilometers, while the rest of the Vermilion Nordic members skied

2nd Chance Trail Ride

On May 12 over 35 wagons and 360 riders rode 17 kilometers on the Iron Horse Trail from Lindbergh to Elk Point on the nicest day of 2018. We couldn’t have asked for better weather and a better turn out to bring awareness to organ and tissue donation.

Riders came from all over Alberta and even some from Saskatchewan to

a whopping 10,562 kilometers.

The club has been in existence for over 40 years. A large part of the longevity and club’s success is due to the assistance of the park staff. Braving the weather and all kinds of elements, Park staff continue to groom perfect racks and make Vermilion a first-class destination for cross-country skiing. On behalf of the Vermilion Nordic Ski club, we wish to thank the park staff for their hard work and efforts to support the club and the sport of cross-country skiing.

They enjoyed their wagon ride with Morris Ir vine; double lung transplant recipient and founding member of 2nd Chance Trail Ride. Dr. Lien then spoke to a crowd of 500 supporters that attended the supper, live and silent auction and dance. Ceana Moans also spoke to the crowd about

AUMA Voices Support For Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion Project

Edmonton, AB – May 17, 2018 The Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) sent a letter to the Prime Minister yesterday expressing our support for the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion Project. The letter contained the names of 167 Mayors and Communities who voiced their support for the project directly. This follows a resolution that passed at the AUMA’s Annual Convention last year that was overwhelmingly supported by over 1,100 elected officials from across the province.

“We wanted to demonstrate that this project has support among all three levels of government,” said Barry Morishita, President of the AUMA. “This project is critical not only to the province and industry, but to the municipalities that will benefit from the taxation and economic spin off of this expansion.”

AUMA hopes to see both the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia as well as the Government of Canada reach an agreement with Kinder Morgan that will allow the project to proceed.

“As municipal leaders, we know full well the impacts a project of this magnitude can

have on communities. As municipalities, we are the first responders to emergency events and have to always have the safety of our communities in mind. We know the challenge of making sound decisions in land use planning to balance growth and protecting the environment, as we face them every day. But we also understand that the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion Project has been through one of the most rigorous reviews of any pipeline project in our nation’s history.”
