There are 150 registered players on 13 teams playing in the Lakeland and Lloydminster leagues.

Smith says it’s been quite steady since they opened and that the community has been very welcoming and supportive.

Daines & Daubney opened in Vermilion on March 24. On May 5 the chatter of excited customers filled the air as you entered Vermilion’s new Daines & Daubney decor location for their grand opening.

The store is a second location, owned and operated by Dana Smith and her husband, who also owns the Daines & Daubney location in Wainwright. The new location employs local staff, with only one employee coming from Clandonald.

“The store has some commonalities between our Vermilion location and our Wainwright location, such as the black awning outside, grey tissue paper, and shopping bags. We have some products that are unique to Vermilion, such as Lampe Berger,” said Smith.

Smith went on to explain that when opening the Vermilion location she did her best to avoid duplication of product lines already offered in Vermilion.

Commerce hosted their 10th Annual The Conference and Tradeshow celebrated women’s strengths and featured keynote speaker Melanie HaydenSparks, as well as speakers Vanessa Rogers and Lindsay Toth.

She encouraged participants to live each day as if it was their last. “ The most impor tant person on the planet is you. The biggest gift you can give your child is to be happy and healthy; nothing moves their soul more,” said Hayden-Sparks.

She encouraged people to plan structure in to their lives and outline their values, boundaries, and accountability.

She closed by challenging the audience to just do one thing better each day.

Figure Fitness Champion, Vanessa Rogers, opened her speech describing her journey of overcoming a traumatic car accident at age 16 that left her as a quadriplegic. Rogers attended elementary school in Vermilion and noted having been inspired by her mother.

Rogers underwent multiple surgeries for her crushed vertebrae, was in traction and had to be fed, dressed, diapered and have people scratch her nose for her.

After being told she would never walk again, and after intensive physical therapy, Rogers miraculously began to walk.

After years of figure fitness training she

competed in the 2016 at the Lou Ferrigno Legacy Show, winning gold out of all the able bodied competitors. Though she still is awaiting hip surgery and unsure if she will ever be able to compete again, Rogers shared what she had learned from her experiences.

“I learned that I may have to work harder and longer but could accomplish something significant,” said Rogers who continues to live and drive in a non-modified home and vehicle. She encouraged

the audience by saying, “Everyone has challenges. I made small choices each day to get to my goals. It’s not go big or go home; it takes time, but take those baby steps. Not just in fitness, but in all aspects of your life – become unstoppable.”

Following lunch, Lindsay Toth, owner of Hi Five Fitness in Cold Lake, described ways for women to incorporate fitness into their workday without it being a chore. She had the audience up partic-

United Church Tea And Bake Sale

The First United Church Women’s Auxiliary held their annual Spring Tea and Bake sale on May 5 at the Vermilion First United Church.

Attendees could purchase a beverage and dessert and enter their name in the door prize draw. Also, a wide array of luxurious baked goods were available for purchase.

Bake sale volunteers Jean Morrison said, “There has been a great turn out this year.” and Helen Shirreff said, “A lot of people are staying around visiting.” The two door prizes went to Donna Eyben and Hilda Bell.

4th Annual Stollery Barrel Racing On May 4th over 100 riders participated in the Annual Stollery Barrel Racing event at Lakeland College.

The event which has been held for four years has alternated between different areas. The $65 entry fee will be split 50 per cent for the Stollery and 50 per cent for prizes and payouts.

The event also featured a silent auction and riders could pay $1 to fill out a card for the name of the person he/she was riding for, with all proceeds going to the Stollery.

Wow, it seems Spring decided to show up almost overnight, it got beautiful and dare I say this... almost too hot out there, all snow and ice disappeared in front of our eyes and flooding wasn’t even that bad.

The Battle River broke literally overnight, huge chunks of thick ice cleared willows from the shoreline as the river rose quite high, but then lowered quicker than I thought and is flowing normal high.

The most welcome sound was the frogs started their song almost on cue, and the warm sunset was vocal with frog and robins singing, music to these ears, the only sound I can do without is the early mosquitoes.

Things dried up quickly, almost too quick; huge smoke clouds surround us as wildfires broke out all around us, be extremely careful out there with any fire hazards, a spark and recent winds can turn dangerous in just minutes. There are already many fire bans across Alberta, to check your local area one can go to the website - https:// albertafirebans.ca/ we all want Alberta to be wildfire free this year and not see a repeat of recent years disasters.

It got so hot that I brought out the swimming pools for all the pup kennels, even the new little ones have a pool. I made steps in and out for them and only put enough water in the pools for them to get their feet and legs cooled down, they are a little leery of the pool, but they slowly understand that it is the best way to cool down. With our duck pond full the big dogs, are making many trips to the pond for a cool swim, they all love swimming, and after a dip, their energy seems to explode, like the way some of us get with too much Tim Horton’s coffee.

The little new puppies don’t know what to think about this new world without snow

or cold; they dig holes down into the fresh straw to cool ground that still has ice under the straw. But they are also still full of energy in sprints during the day, they all seem to grow before my eyes, and I can’t believe they are seven weeks old today, only a week left until some of them go to their new forever homes, that will be a little hard on me.

I spend many hours a day playing with the whole crew during the day, trying to spend as much time as I can with them, the other night when it was a beautiful warm night I put Miss Teek to bed and give all the dogs their “night night” treats. It was just before midnight, I got playing with the pups and before I knew it was 1 in the AM by the time they got played out. I cuddled with some of them in one of the big dog houses; I am not sure what time it was when I woke up with seven furbabies sleeping all over me, I had to tiptoe out of the kennel and get to bed.

Thursday is going to be an adventure when I have to take all seven of the pups to the V-E-T, my professional fur baby socializer and eldest daughter Shawna volunteered to help me out, we will use her SUV for the haul. Each pup will get all their first shots, de-worming, and head to toe medical check-up, and also just as important nowadays the microchip installed, which will have all important contact and ownership information with a simple scan.

It will also be quite an adventure for the pups on their first road trip, than some stranger poking and prying them, I’m sure a little stressful for some of them, while others I know it will be just an adventure.

After the shots and medical, and eight weeks of age the pups will be ready for their new forever homes, it will be extremely hard for me to see them go, unlike Momma Miss Oohohh whom mother nature gives them a quick disconnect on pups. Mother Nature gives all animals the ability to adapt quickly as little ones “leave the nest” so to

speak, and she will have her paws full with the over-energetic four that we are keeping as part of the team and family.

The pups are at a stage where they want to explore everything and the big new world, several times they made a break for it when I opened the kennel doors, they love being out and playing with the big dogs, which for the most part the big dogs also enjoy.

I don’t worry about any of the big dogs hurting the little ones except them getting run over by the big dogs as they want to play and run with the pups, now I need to take two little pups at a time for a whole crew walk in the “North 40”. I will likely walk the four we are keeping first in pairs as they will be walking a lot with the team in the months to come, Thunder and Lightning, the two black and white ones as one team, and Sir Snownose and Princess Pututi the two red pups, as another team. I plan to run those pairs as pairs in the dog team, so they will need to get used to being with each other a lot, they will complete my dream team for sure, I can’t wait until they get pulling, which

will be this coming winter.

I have been trying to get out to antler shed hunt with several of the older pups, but the sudden disappearance of snow and ice has left me with an overwhelming amount of yard work that has to be done before things get green. That green I’m sure is going to be a green explosion this year and also happen overnight, while all the adult pups get to run the entire day on our rural property, they love to get out for new adventures.

I am sure after that long winter we all are itching to get outdoors for an adventure of our own...make the time to do so, and I should also take my own advise and head out for a couple of hours tomorrow morning...see you out there!

I recently noticed some cream puffs at a local grocer y store. They were 2 for $2.99, not a bad price I thought, but then I read the ingredients. They contained 31 ingredients, things like sodiumsterroyl-2- lacty late, Sodium aluminum sulphate, sorbitan, monostrearate. polysorbate BO, and modified cellulose gum. The list went on and on with ingredients that sounded m o r e l i ke a c h e m i s t r y l a b t h a n a kitchen. Strangely the cream puffs looked like they had whipped cream in them, yet there was no cream listed on the ingredient list. I put them back, they were just too scary to eat. My cream puff recipe uses 3 ingredients plus the water, and when you fill them with fresh homemade whipped cream,

Well, …this year (for a few people I k n o w) m a r k s a r at h er s i g nifi c ant milestone…the big 50 and during this month for the author herein. The last while has been spent in some reflection and rumination on how fast the time has gone and what has played out on the ticker tape over that period of time.

Yes…I will be referring to obsolescent (some might say ancient…?) things as maybe one of the most noticeable elements of those 50 years is how many things have come along, or even come and then gone, since.

First off…where I emerged into existence isn’t even there anymore, like many other buildings that have come and gone in my hometown. If there is one thing I’ve experienced is that buildings, where you have spent periods of time in, aren’t nearly as permanent of a fixture as most of us as youngsters tend

then that’s 2 more ingredients, cream and sugar. You can also fill them with whipped coconut cream, instead of the whipped cream, if you are allergic to dairy. Just follow my whipped coconut cream recipe, a few Vermilion Voice issues back, in the coconut cream pie recipe.

You don’t have to be a master pastry chef to make cream puffs. They are quick and easy to make. You only need 1 pot, a wooden spoon and a greased cookie sheet. This is one recipe that you will have to sift the flour. Remember to measure the one cup of flour after it is sifted. The second secret is to make sure your oven is preheated all the way. They can be filled with both sweet and savory fillings. The most popular filling is sweetened whipped cream.

Cream Puffs 1/2 cup butter 1 cup boiling water

1 cup sifted flour 4 eggs Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.

Measure the butter and boiling water into a saucepan. Stir mixture over medium heat until the water returns to a boil and the butter is melted. Add the flour all at once and stir over moderated heat until a wooden spoon makes an imprint in the mixture and the mixture forms a ball that comes away from the side of the pan, (about 1 minute).

Leave the mixture in the same saucepan, remove from heat, cool slightly, make sure the mixture is still warm but not so hot as to cook the first egg. Add unbeaten eggs, one at a time. Beat each egg in until satiny smooth before adding the next. The secret to success in cream puffs in long and patient beating. My arm does get tired, but that is a small price to pay for such amazing results. Drop the dough by 2 tablespoon amounts onto a greased cookie

Anyway, a couple of my earliest memories are riding in the elevator in the old hospital…and, as a 4-year-old, probably the worst bloody nose I ever experienced from bashing into my little brother’s forehead playing tag on the lawn beside the front steps. I didn’t have far to the nurse to get fixed up.

So many things that have come and gone include all those pieces of tech which influenced our lives through that time or a quaint and baffling curiosity for my youngsters. 8-Track tapes…it’s May the Force (4th) and I can think of listen-

ing to my Star Wars Storybook tape on a deck. Plus the black and white television we watched “Grandpa Sneezby” on CKSA, the manual typewriters we still learned typing on in Grade 10 in 1984, Compact Cassettes we kept in large cases on the car floor, 5¼ floppy disks that took 6 minutes to load, party line telephones that you had to remember your distinct ring, Realistic WalkieTalkies from Radio Shack that might have transmitted over 50 yards tops, setting the flashing “12:00” clock to tape your TV show on VHS, cars where you never wore, or knew about, the seat belts. Sometimes I wonder how we lived this long doing things like that…until I remember all those I grew up around

sheet, spaced apart and twirl slightly at the top to give a peaked effect. Bake on a middle rack at 425 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes, or until well risen. Do not open the oven to check on your baking, turn on the oven light and look through the glass if you need to see. Opening the door causes drafts that can cause you cream puffs not to rise properly.

Reduce the heat to 325 degrees and continue baking for 20- 25 minutes. Let the baked pastry set for a few minutes to cool. Cut the top off each pastry puff and fill with sweetened whipped cream. Replace the top and sprinkle with powdered icing sugar. This recipe makes 12 large puff pastries or for 24 smaller puff pastries drop by 1 tablespoon onto 2 greased cookie sheets.

Put both cookie sheets in at the same time to prevent opening the oven twice and dropping the temperature, which may prevent the puffs from rising properly.

One of the larger and simpler improvement over this time are just the paved roads. It didn’t seem like we could go anywhere from the farm that wasn’t down a gravel road for the entire trip. Thankfully that has changed for the better, but for a time it seemed like riding down a dusty gravel road, for hours every day, was a trip that was never going to end.

On that note, let us hope that even at the ripe age of “L” (we even learned Roman numerals in school), there are as many days still ahead for us Nifty Fifties as there are behind.

The Vermilion Girl Guides hosted a Garage Sale on May 4 - 5 in the Bentley Building at the Vermilion Agricultural Grounds.

17th Annual Vermilion Quilters Quilt Show

The Vermilion Quilters Guild 21st annual quilt show held on May 5 - 6 at the Vermilion Regional Centre was a vibrant display of colours which was reminiscent of looking through a kaleidoscope.

The show displayed well over 200 quilts crafted by members of the Vermilion Quilters Guild and the Guilds of surrounding areas, as well as last year’s winning quilts.

Also on display was a Humboldt Strong quilt which was made by 10-year quilter Rosanne Dutchak.

“The Humboldt Quilt Guild organized making quilts for all the people involved, the families, the emergency responders; the design and colours were specific to the organization’s request. They were hoping for 200, but the response has been greater than that,” said Alice Swan, Chair of the Quilt Show.

Featured quilter Pat Carey who has been quilting for 43 years had 37 quilts on show.

“Each quilt that I do takes hours to

complete. You just work away at them, and you lose track of time,” said Carey.

Quilters throughout the year also had the opportunity to compete in a Guild challenge.

“We were given an envelope with five or six squares of fabric where some were lovely and fit together, and two of them were far out crazy. We had to incorporate them into a piece we made whether it was a quilt or table runner, etc.,” explained Carey.

While visiting, viewers could vote on their favourite quilt in both the large and small quilt categories with the viewer’s choice announced at the end of the show on Sunday.

Visitors could enjoy soup, sandwiches, cookies, and beverages prepared by the guild members, and were serenaded throughout the day with music by local talent as well as a lunchtime performance by the RGB Trio.

‘Comfort Quilts’ are donated each year by the Vermilion Quilters Guild to an organization(s) of their choice. This year the Vermilion Quilters decided to donate

quilts to the Quilts of Valour for Veterans and the Cross Cancer Institute.

“This has been a spectacular year for donation quilts,” said Swan.

“It’s the first time donating to Quilts for

Veterans. One of our members felt very committed to the organization and wanted to join the mission,” said a member of the Vermilion Quilters Guild, Marlene Lawrence.

On Monday, April 16 the heart of Elsie Fleming stopped and our lives were forever changed. We would like to say thank to everyone who came to see us at the farm, sent messages, phone calls, brought food and sent flowers. We knew Elsie, was very much loved by all of you, and so many of you are feeling her loss too. We are truly grateful and we were a little overwhelmed with how many attended her funeral. Thanks for being there for us, we appreciate the love and support you gave us during this difficult time. Your thoughtfulness will never be forgotten.

IRRESISTIBLE ROSES Even though the average gardener has at least one rose bush growing in the garden, he or she is likely unaware of the care these beautiful flowers require. Roses must be able to find all the nutritional elements they need for their development in the soil in order to flower abundantly and be disease and parasite resistant.

The first requirement of any rose bush is well-drained clay-based soil.

It will also need suitable feeding throughout the summer. Rose fertilizers provide good balance between several different elements: nitrogen to encourage vigorous growth, phosphorous to help root development, and potassium to reinforce resistance to disease.

Roses are very sensitive to magnesium deficiency, which results in a yellowing of the leaves that starts at the centre of the leaf and develops into brown colouring along the veins.

This condition should be treated as quickly as possible with an appropriate product.

Roses will flower over a period of many years, but plants ought to be replaced every seven to twelve years. In addition to keeping a rose bed healthy, it gives gardeners a chance to tr y other varieties and create new harmonies in the flower garden.

the removal of dead or wilted flowers. This process, called deadheading, increases flower production and prevents fruit formation. Use a good pair of secateurs and prune above the second or third fully formed leaf under the flower. It is preferable to choose a bud eye that faces away from the centre of the plant.

These much-loved flowers have been cultivated by devoted gardeners for hundreds of years, even though they require constant care and attention to ensure abundant flowering.

Enthusiasts will tell you, however, that their beauty and fragrance are well worth the effort!

New Digs For F’Laura n’ Company

F’Laura n’ Company Greenhouses located at 5201-50 Avenue in Vermilion and the farm at 3/4 mile south of highway 16 on Range Road 42 opened for business on May 1st, with the grand opening five-year anniversary event occurring the first weekend in June at the Vermilion location.

The vibrant hues of pink and orange are what first grab your eye as you walk into the newly built F’Laura n’ Company Greenhouse.

“This is the first year for our brand new greenhouse. Before the snow fell we completed the structural aspect of the greenhouse. Then my husband and the boys spent the winter completing the inside.

We had to discuss what was needed to improve the facility over the old, while still maintaining the same great service and products,” said Laura Waterfield, owner of

6th Annual Children’s Mental Health Art Gala

The walls and stage at the Vermilion Regional Centre were lined with 245 artwork pieces as the 6th Annual VIBE Mental Health Art Gala took place on May 1.

Submitted art pieces from the Vermilion, Mannville, Clandonald, Innisfree, Kitscoty and Paradise Valley school students were separated into age groups from Grade 1 - 3, 4 - 6, 7 - 9 and 10 - 12. Community residents, NewsCap, and Alberta Mental Health voted on the pieces until first, second and third place winners were chosen in each age group except for Grades 1 - 3.

“It’s a great evening! When you see the art pieces you see how well they understand mental health, even the young children in Grades 1 - 3,” said VIBE Wellness Coordinator Pat Calyniuk.

The Gala, themed ‘Mental Health Around the World’, provided 525 community residents a free family evening where attend-

ees of all ages could participate in numerous activities such as how to make animal towels, learn to paint with watercolour, plant pot painting, and button making.

“This is my first time coming to the Gala even though my wife works with VIBE. It’s been a great evening for myself and our three children,” said Adam Boe. Numerous art project stations were available such as making worry dolls from Guatemala, boomerangs from Australia, Chinese dragons from China, Japanese fans from Japan, as well as beaded key chains representing First Nations, and henna from India. The stations strengthen the gala’s theme.

Cupcakes decorated to depict the world, a wide array of fruits (which could be dipped into a chocolate fountain), and beverages were available throughout the evening.

During the event, the first, second, and third place art pieces were auctioned in each age group except the Grade 1 - 3 section.

“ We would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who helped make our art gala a wonderful evening! Thank you to all of our volunteers, financial partners, and to everyone who created art and attended the event! It was great to see so many

people out from Vermilion and surrounding communities,” said Calyniuk.

Parkland Amphibian BioBlitz 2018

Public par ticipants needed for Amphibian BioBlitz A local biologist and Lakeland College instructor is inviting residents to get involved with an amphibian BioBlitz over the May long weekend.

“This is a citizen science project,” says Darcey Shyry, an instructor of Environmental Sciences.

“All you need to do for this BioBlitz is a roadside survey to help track biodiversity.”

The BioBlitz is in the Parkland region, straddling the border of Alberta and Saskatchewan. This includes Chauvin, Hardisty, Irma, Lloydminster, Macklin, Manitou Lake, Paradise Valley, Provost, the Battlefords, Vermilion and Wainwright areas.

Three—the northern leopard frog, Canadian toad and plains spadefoot toad— are all species at risk. The northern leopard frog used to be common in this region, but the last known population in central Alberta is in the Battle River near Wainwright.

The other four amphibians of interest are the boreal chorus frog, wood frog, tiger salamander and plains garter snake. Last year this BioBlitz provided the first records of amphibians in the region around Manitou Lake in Saskatchewan – their presence was undocumented previously.

“We are asking for an evening, or two... or three if you’re really keen and are having lots of fun,” he adds. “You pick a stretch of quiet rural road that has adjacent water bodies like ponds, creeks, shallow lakes and the Battle River. You stop for three minutes at these locations and listen

for calling frogs and toads.” You’re also asked to document where you see garter snakes and salamanders (whether alive or dead) and snake hibernacula.”

Participants will need to know the different frog and toad calls but there are only five species to learn and likely you already know some. “You can learn the calls fairly quickly as their calls are very distinctive and can be learned easily from a couple of websites,” says Shyry.

The exciting part about this BioBlitz is that it will provide valuable information on the distribution of our breeding amphibians that will then be used to support their conservation” says Shyry, “which is important because 44 per cent of amphibians and 65 per cent of reptiles in Canada have been assessed as species at risk.” “Many of us have fond memories of the loud chorus of frogs in the spring, including the unique calls made by the northern leopard frog that sound like a wet finger rubbing on a balloon or a creaky door” continued Shyry, “so participation will definitely have a positive impact on local biodiversity conservation.”

“It was very interesting to be part of this project from start to finish. Finding the original print negatives of the Instinct book in the attic of the Vermilion Standard sure helped a lot,” said Smith.

“We were able to have the negatives shot to a digital file so that it could be formatted into book form for the reprint.”

“I did a lot of research on the members that the Legion included in the book.

Through social media and the internet I was able to track some families down who moved, and a lot of phone calls,” said Smith.

Mrs. Beaudette and her grade six students headed out on their Field Trip to Drumheller on Tuesday, May 1. They are taking part in a unique opportunity to learn history, geology, chemistry, palaeontology, and biology with the Royal Tyrell Museum. The students were excited that they got to sleep overnight in Dinosaur Hall.

They climbed the large dinosaur downtown Drumheller, took a hike through the badlands, participated in a crime scene investigation experience, and did some fossil casting. It is a once in a lifetime experience that the students will have wonderful memories of. Thank you to Mrs. Beaudette for all the organizing and Mr. Wheat for driving the bus.

April Happigrams were celebrated last week. Mr. Martin’s class entertained the students and families gathered with the humorous play, “The Legend of Lightning Larry”. Their clear voices, and excellent expressions were delightful to see. They also did an excellent job singing “Start a Fire” by Unspoken. Congratulations to all of this month’s winners for their strong work effort, improvement in their academics and for the kindness they show others.

On Saturday, April 28 our Grade 7 badminton team travelled to Kitscoty for the final tournament of the season. Congratulations to Denver Minish and Colt Jackson for winning Silver in doubles and to Dallyn Minish for his silver win in singles.

On Friday, April 27, elementary students were treated to a very personal and educational Petting Zoo at the barns on the Fairgrounds. Skye Bodurka, Meghan Krys, Maranda Westergaard, and Taylor, Grade 10 Leadership students did an excellent job organizing this wonderful event. Students were bussed to the barns and then had the opportunity to interact and learn about a variety of animals, a variety of dogs, a lamb, horse, donkey, goat, calf, and an alpaca. As the students left they were given a treat bag filled with a variety of booklets, stickers and other treats.

Approximately 40 students participated in the St. Jerome’s 30-Hour Famine during the last weekend of April. This event was organized by Grade 10 Leadership students. They raised $1000 for Chalice.

They would like to thank all the teachers and parents who helped to supervise this event.

The Spring Dance organized by students from the Grade 10 Leadership class was a great success. They raised $634 for the Food Bank and the organizers would like to

thank DJ, Brett Maron, for donating back his fee to the Food Bank. Awesome!

Our librarian, Mrs. Jackson, has been holding monthly draws. This month’s was a bit of a brain teaser. Students were asked to guess the number of smarties a jar held.

VES Hot Lunch Society put on their annual breakfast on April 27, and it was another success. 244 people from the community come through the doors to enjoy yummy pancakes, sausages, fruit and beverages. The profit was $1220. This money will be used to help ease the cost of subsidies and operational costs for the Hot Lunch Society. We would like to thank the fabulous volunteers: Brandon Tupper, Pam Young, Karen Hughes and Donna Niedzielski on the grills, Kirby Whitlock keeping the food stocked and the lines running smoothly, and Mrs. Webb and Mrs. Doherty for greeting the guests. Mrs. Murie has been the Chief of Operations for the pancake breakfast for as long as we can remember.

We are truly blessed to have her give her time to the Community Pancake Breakfast and to the Hot Lunch program. It was a great morning for all, as everyone in attendance left with full bellies and big smiles.

We welcome Miss West to our school.

We moved our regular assembly from May 2 to April 30 because that was Mrs. Webb’s last day as principal of VES. We sang O’ Canada and the VES song, and acknowledged the territory on which we live and learn. The two Grade 1 classes did a magnificent job of presenting Vermilion Landmarks. We learned that Lakeland College opened in 1913, CIBC opened in 1905, the Vermilion River got its name from the red clay on its banks, the Provincial Park opened in 1953 moving the CN station there in 1948 and the Caboose in 1986, the Vermilion Library began in 1931 with 113 books, VES was built in 1982, the Vermilion Museum used to be called S.R.P. Cooper School, and the stone cenotaph stands to honor our veterans.

Mrs. Moses reminded us that citizenship is the virtue for the month of May. Mr. Harvey presented ribbons to Klondike Relay winners. Mrs. Tomkins informed the students that they have read nearly 15 000 points in Accelerated Reading, and certificates were given to Luke Guenthner and Pyrrha Ostropolski on being the Readers

of the Month. The kindergarten class was the reading class of the month. Jared and Sierra addressed Mrs. Webb’s departure from our school and Aminata presented her with a book of best wishes from the students.

Our spring fundraiser cash raffle was a success with 981 tickets sold. It began on March 1 and ran until April 30. Congratulations to the winners: First Prize - Donna Hanson (25% of ticket sales - $2452.50), Second Prize - Alva Creech (15% of ticket sales - $1471.50), and Third Prize - Ryan Anderson (10% of ticket sales - $981.00).

VES Spring Concert

Children were thrilled to sing and perform at the Vermilion Elementary School’s Annual Spring Concer t on May 4.

Students Kira Jaremco, Ava Crowe, and Katie Sargeant had won the superintendant speak-offs and were selected to emcee the event. Kindergarten students kicked off the concert by s i n g i n g ‘J u b i l e e’ a n d ‘ G e r m s .’

Fo l l o w i n g t h e i r p e r f o r m a n c e, b i g smiles and waves were shared as the crowd applauded.

Grade 1 sang ‘Little Red Car’ and ‘Bringing Home My Baby Bumblebee.’

Grade 2 sang ‘The Cat Came Back’ which was written in 1893. Grade 3 sang ‘I Am An Acorn’ and ‘I Love The

Mountains.’ Continuing on, Grade 4 sang ‘Nobody Likes Me’ and a combination of ‘The Canoe Song’ and ‘Land Of The Silver Birch.’

Colourful artwork filled the gymnasium, and Grade 5 students played recorder s and c hose to sing ‘ Lost Boy.’ Grade 6 students chose to sing ‘ Fi s h i n’ In T h e Dar k ,’ a n d a ll ag e g r o u p s p e r f o r m e d a n i m p r e s s i ve finale imitating a spring rain storm by making sounds with their hands, legs, and feet. They concluded the show by Grade 2 students sang “The Cat Came back” during the VES Spring Concert. singing ‘You Are My Sunshine.”

Mannville Skating Club Success

as well as an adult’s session if there is enough interest. It has been a busy, but The Mannville Skating Club (MSC) a wonderful year and I would like to thank has concluded another successful the entire executive, coaches, parents season. The club finished off the year and all other volunteers that gave up their with 26 skaters at the end of the season.

During the 2017-2018 skating season, some of our Can Skate skaters attended Fun meets in Lloydminster and Vermilion bringing home an array of medals, and our StarSkaters were very successful in passing their tests this past season, and we are very proud of their accomplishments.

We would also like to thank the community of Mannville and everyone that makes our fundraising a success; the community looks forward to our fundraising campaign. Watch out for our fundraising forms next season!

By chance, Library Manager, Brenda Walker noticed an email come across

Jasmine started her acting career at the age of 9, followed her dream of theatre and through her love of history formed her own company per forming live history for audiences around the world. Jasmine and her fellow actors started off 2018 in Halifax and will finish the year in Australia /New Zealand.

Upon arriving in Mannville Jasmine and fellow actor, Joshua gave t wo one hour workshops for Grades 3, 4 and 5 followed by Grades 6, 7 and 8. After walking through the stages of how to devise a myster y per formance the students were divided into groups and encouraged to think of a mini performance of their own. Following the workshops, Jasmine and Joshua proceeded to the Crossroads M u s e u m t o r e h e a r s e t h e eve n i n g performances. With room for only 30 guests per show, the audiences gathered around the many artifacts of the museum to witness the appearance of the mystery guest, confused of who she was, where she was and what year it was.

The Vermilion Vipers Swim Club is very excited to have three local ladies as our coaches this season.

Carmen Haslehurst, our Head Coach, is joining our group this year. She is a Swim Instructor, Lifeguard and had many years experience teaching Gymnastics and her daughters were part of the Vermilion Vipers Swim Club as well. We are excited that she has taken her Swim 101 course and will be part of our team this year.

Raelene Lupul, our Assistant Coach, is a Viper Alumni and this is her second season coaching with us. We are very excited to have her back.

Jackie Johnson, our Mini Coach, is new to our club this year but not new to the pool. She is a Swim Instructor and Head Lifeguard at the pool. We are excited that

The Vermilion Vipers Swim Club offers swimming for all levels. Our Mini Vipers are little ones who like the water and want to learn more about basic swimming skills. Our Pre Vipers know the very basics of swimming and want to learn more about the different swimming strokes. Our Viper group is our main group who know most of the four swim strokes and go to swim meets in our region. We are also excited to offer Master Swim, for adults who want to get back in the water and learn or refine their swimming techniques.

Swimming runs Monday - Thursday from 5:00 - 5:45 for the little ones, 5:00 - 6:30 for the bigger ones and 5:30 Photo submitted 6:30 for the Masters.

NOTICE OF ROADSIDE HERBICIDE APPLICATION & MOWING Roadside vegetation control in CVR will begin approx. June 1 st (depending on growing conditions). We use a combination of truck-mounted sprayers for brush control and herbicide application mowers for roadside weed control. This year, we are roadside spraying in Spray Area 3 with spot spraying in other areas as needed.

CVR recognizes that some land owners do NOT wish to have herbicides applied adjacent to their land OR may wish to harvest hay from the roadside adjacent to their land. As such, we offer the option of entering into a No Spray Zone or a Haying Agreement for those areas. The County would then avoid herbicide applications or mowing in those areas, with the expectation that the landowner will control weeds and brush within this area to Municipal Standards. When applying, applicants must arrange for on-site inspection.

Agreements are valid for the season in which they are issued and expire on Sept. 30th. If you would like to enter into an agreement or renew one that has expired, please contact the Ag Team at 780846-2244.
