Mayor Caroline McAuley, Councillors Clint McCullough and Justin Thompson, and Community Economic Development Coordinator Mary Lee Prior presented owners Aaron and Bailey Snelgrove with a plaque for their contribution to the economic growth of Vermilion along with a certificate in recognition of their grand opening. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at their new retail location at 5002-51 Ave in Vermilion.

“The more we have in Vermilion, the more we become a centre where people want to come and shop, and providing us with options and choices are always good. Another perk is that it’s within walking distance from downtown. Congratulations, and we wish them all the best,”

said Mayor, Caroline McAuley.

“Buckshot And Blossoms”

With the clomping of hooves and the crack of a whip, the curtains opened for the 13th Annual Dewberry Dinner Theatre on April 20 – 21, at Dewberry Hall.

Performing “Buckshot and Blossoms” for their first year in the new Dewberry Hall, the crowd was kept in stitches with a Wild West show.

According to Director, Cheryl Nawrot, the event has raised over $35,000 over the years which has contributed to several community events and activities. Two cards on each table decided the dinner order with a roast beef meal

Sixteen area cast members had been practicing since December and Arnell Dennill said, “I love being involved with all of the people in the theatre group.

I enjoy the feeling of achievement that comes when the play is finished and you hear the applause from the audience.”

Detailed set and costumes fit the time period, and lively saloon music helped set the mood. The anti-gun play was set in the town of Trail Dust, Arizona, and the cast worked to figure out who was the rightful heir of a Copper Mine, keeping the audience entertained with commitment to their characters and

authentic drawl. “ We we r e b l o w n away w i t h t h e support and the number of people who attended. There would be no show if no one came to watch. We never know what parts people are going to react to, and we love that they enjoyed it. We would like to thank the community for their participation and volunteer support; it’s a whole team that makes this work,” said Nawrot.

Rotary Garage Sale

Thousands of collectibles and house wares were up for sale as the Vermilion Rotary Club held their 11th Annual Garage Sale at the Vermilion Curling rink from April 19 - 21. A large selection of furniture, yard tools, spor ts equipment, of fice supplies, appliances, hardware, pet items, toys, seasonal and miscellaneous items had also been donated knowing that the proceeds from this sale provide a great benefit to the community.

According to Brenda Lee, Rotar y Garag e Sale Chair, mem ber s had been committed working with spouses, friends of Rotary, and several volunteer organizations. Youth organizations included the Vermilion Dance Association, 4-H Outdoor Club, Kids Making A Difference Club, and Girl Guides.

“It was great to have their energy

and young legs. With volunteers working since early April to collect donations and organize the sale, we’ve likely acquired 800 volunteer hours just for the preparations,” said Lee. One of the Rotar y ’s major fund raisers, the sale committed that all the proceeds would stay within the c o m m u n i t y, a n d t h e f i r s t $ 5 , 0 0 0 raised would go towards the Heritage Museum’s floor renovation project. The club’s most recent donation was $100,000 to the Lodge’s modernization project, and other donations include minor sports, the community oven, a gazebo, etc.

“There is no lack of opportunity to get behind local projects as the Rotary is involved already in school lunch and breakfast programs, putting defibrillators in public buildings, diagnostic equipment in our hospital, supporting Rotary members Kirby Whitlock and Justin Thompson were on hand at the Vermilion Rotary youth sports and local infrastructure”! Last year, Rotary took in over $29,000 at their annual Garage Sale. She also said, “This project is so community driven and requires so many community partners, the Rotary Club commits all proceeds from this

sale will be invested back into our community. This is a true community project”!

The items that were remaining will be shared with other organizations including, The Communit y Closet, Girl Guides, The Inter val Store, St. Jerome’s Carnival, the Olive Tree, Canadian Diabetes, Friends of the Islay Care Centre, the Canine Action Project and Books for Belize. “ We’ve had lots of fun. The sale continues to grow each year because of the generosity of the community.

We are so thankful for your donations and support, as well as to each of the volunteers,” said Lee.

The plant receives water from the City of Lloydminster's Waterworks System which is regulated by the Province of Saskatchewan, and further disinfects the received water with the ultraviolet (UV) and chloramination processes to meet the Alberta Standards. The treated water from this facility is conveyed through a regional water transmission line to some municipalities in the County of Vermilion River.

The facility is located on NW 10-50-01 W4M in the County of Vermilion River.

Looking out the window watching the snow and wind, it feels like Januar y and its mid-April already, last year in a couple of weeks from now we had leaves on the trees. However, the old snow is trying to go away very slowly.

The only upside was this last Friday, although it was snowing again, momma Robin dropped in for a visit, I was so happy to see her, she looked over the entire property planning her nesting site, a couple of hours later daddy showed up to help. The next morning we had five robins hanging out in the yard, most likely all the last years’ youngsters now looking for their territory close by, I told them all they were more than welcome.

The geese are very slowly making their way north, but with all the water bodies still frozen solid they are in no hurry, the Gophers come out long enough to have a dried, frozen snack then say the heck with this and head back down the hole for a nap.

It seems relentless, however again on the upside, my new puppies love it, they were born for this stuff, no matter bitter cold, blowing snow or sleet rain they are outside enjoying their outdoor world.

I moved a ton of snow and ice from their kennel from recent snowstorms but left a small section for them to play in, and they love to sit on the ice and snow, they are just five weeks old and already very active.

Momma Miss Oohohh is still nursing them, but on her terms now, she will nurse one at a time, so they all get their share, or when she is not so sore, she will feed all at once in a frenzy for a minute or two. Which they are determined to get every last drop of momma’s milk, but

with the mouths now complete with razor sharp teeth and needle-like claws, they can make momma very sore, so she is weaning them slowly.

I have them on a puppy chow and meat diet which the gobble up eagerly, I recently purchased a huge industrial meat grinder, which I had to drive to Saskatchewan to pick up, but it was well worth trip. It is very heavy duty complete with a tabletop tray cabinet as a unit, and it has a geared down motor and pulley system in the cabinet that gobbles up meat as fast as the pups. I can drop an entire pork chop in it, and it grinds it no problem as fast as I can feed it. I have a huge stainless steel pot that will hold 25 gallons, and it holds a lot of burger, yesterday I spent the entire day grinding meat and cooking it, I ground up about a 100 pounds/50 kilo of prime pork, beef, and chicken. Which is another huge pot on an industrial propane burner, cooked the burger as fast as I ground it, my dishwashers the other dogs in the herd also ate it as fast as I cooked it, meat that they are fussy eaters with, gobbled it even raw when ground together? So, I will grind, cook and freeze as much as I possibly can for the best dog food they love. It was intended for the pups, but now I presume it’s going to be a standard for all my fur babies, but the new pups love it mixed in with their expensive canned and dry food puppy kibble. I add a lot of hot fresh water and make them a hearty soup or fine stew like goulash, which I had to upgrade to new a three-gallon stainless pan, as they can really put it away. I also cut up fresh roasts into sugar cube pieces and feed them a huge bowl by hand every day. I leave this raw and feed them a couple of times a day, the best thing about this is I get to socialize the pups for several hours a day, I can sit with them for two hours and have a huge smile on my face the entire time.

A couple of the pups that were slightly

shy last week are now crawling all over me with tails wagging; one was my “Thunder” that I am keeping for the family team, I am not sure why he got shy as I gave him a lot of attention from birth. His brother “Lightning” is the complete opposite and quite the outgoing character already, the class clown and most sociable into everything and always the first to greet me when I come to the kennel.

They are now all a happy little social herd, and all follow me everywhere. I even let daddy “Sir Mukluk” right in the kennel the other day to meet his offspring, I was surprised that Momma was so easy going with that, she seemed to know that it is a necessary part of being a family.

Sir Mukluk got to sniff and meet each pup nose to nose, and although a little timid was great with them, I will slowly introduce all the other aunts in the team to the pups, soon we will have a great team.

We are keeping four of the pups, my wife latched onto the two fluffiest, and Red colored pups “Sir Snownose” and

“Miss Pututi” leaving me with my “Thunder” and “Lightning,” the Black and white little monsters. Which I am thrilled with as we are very close right from birth, we found forever homes for the rest of the Red-colored pups, and have only one more black and white male, “Knight” that we are taking consideration for his new forever home. I would love to tell you more about them, but I feel they are calling me and I can’t wait to get out there to feed them breakfast, so stay tuned until next week...oh and happy spring...Get out there.

Please place your unwanted items in your front yard near the curb for pickup.

The benefit of making homemade cookies is that you are using wholesome and simple ingredients. When you buy packaged cookies, you may be getting junk oils with trans-fats for the fat, instead of healthful fats like real butter. The sugar content in factory cookies is usually higher, and they may be made with glucosefructose or high fructose corn syrup, which can be damaging to the liver.

One thing about a long winter is that it does subject us to spending perhaps a much longer period in a smaller amount of space than our temperaments tend to enjoy…if understating the obvious of a code jockey spending a too long of a Prairie winter largely tied to a computer and project deadlines. Seems funny to me that we humans as a group seem to innately have an internal clock for knowing when we should be outside enjoying our spaces a grumblier and grumpier lot lately I could scarcely imagine, at least in our household.

Perhaps…with good reason…it is for those of us with a little, or a lot, of the good earth we’ve set aside for ourselves and our outdoor pursuits that this is one of our favorite times of the year. Something as simple as looking outside at the thermometer finally registering into double-digit Celsius, Spring’s terminator having finally crossed from the Yin to the Yang side and meaning to stay there, is enough to look forward to something like first time you open the garden shed door and propping it to stay open. That provides enough of that precious infectious enthusiasm to yours truly to get through any irritation of looking through the door at where the hurriedly piled state of outdoor affairs was left when you last buttoned things up for the winter.

 

I don’t pretend to be the best gardener in the world here…but one thing I do know is that as a pastime it seldom if ever lets you down on the equation of effort put in for the benefits that you get out. You don’t have to be great at it to enjoy it; you just have to get out there, roll your sleeves up, get your hands dirty, put your time in, and be open to learning new things. I supposed I learned that lesson at my parent’s knee…who both spent their younger days around here at the knees of their grandparent homesteaders.

When small talk is bantered around the household the last few days has been about rebuilding garden fences, adding manure, and “are the garlic or onions coming up yet?’…I would say something green thumb-ish in nature got passed

Cream the butter, then add the brown sugar and beat well. Add the vanilla, banana and the egg and beat well to combine. Add the remaining dry ingredients, sprinkling the spices, baking powder, and baking soda to distribute them and then mix well to combine all the ingredients. Drop balls about the size of a large walnut onto a greased cookie sheet or parchment paper on a cookie sheet. Press the balls with a fork to flatten. Bake for approx 9 minutes. Makes two dozen cookies.

Several area residents gathered at the Dewberry Hall on April 13, to enjoy a Dessert Night and support Hope In Motion.

We had a very good evening with lots of good natured joking and auction bidding, songs of inspiration from the Dewberry Mennonite Youth Choir, and a yummy variety of desserts.

We have raised well over $15,000 for the Haying in the 30’s Cancer Support Society. Edmonton singer/songwriter, Erin Kay Kay opened for another artist in Vermilion in 2016, but this will be her first full show in Vermilion. As part of her ‘Silver & Gold’ CD release tour, Kay will invite listeners to a heartfelt and personal performance. Kay’s songs were created out of the depths of recovery from past abuse and her experience as a mother.

Mannville Annual Steak Supper

Submitted Saturday, April 14, 2018, the Mannville & District Agricultural Society held their annual Steak Supper Fundraiser. Volunteers greeted everyone as they arrived, and the hall had a nice ambiance with lovely décor to set the mood for a great evening.

The evening started off with cocktails at 5:30, followed by a delicious steak supper at 6:30. The band the Bamboo Guppies, from Lethbridge, AB, entertained the crowd with live music throughout the night. There was also a silent auction with great donated items available for bidding.

Before supper began, Tim Konieczny, Ag Society President, thanked everyone for coming out to support the event.

Centre. This year, the Ag Society hired employees and took over full operations and maintenance of the building. They have also undertaken several projects to improve and upgrade the facility. For example, they completed a new, larger Zamboni room; tinned the dressing room roofs stuccoed the exterior of the building and created a large storage space. Profits from this fundraiser help the Ag Society run the Recreation Centre, and they also are used to apply for grants to complete the projects mentioned.

Roots Of Empathy Wrap-up

On April 17, a similar celebration and her family. O verall, the st af f, being a part of the roots of Empathy was held for baby Hendrix Tennant, students, and families all enjoyed program.

T h e Ve r m i l i o n E l e m e n t a r y School hosted wind-up classes for two Roots of Empathy babies and their families on April 16 -17.

Baby, Blakely Underhill, has been attending the school periodically since September being weighed, measured, and having students to observe her development. On April 16, at 10 months old, Underhill weighed nine kg and was 79cm long.

“We’ve been very lucky to watch baby Blakely grow and develop as she got older. By smiling and clapping she was able to communicate that she was happy without words. We all grow and develop at our own rate,” said Teacher, Sharleen Moses.

Students shared their favourite memories of the class and some of their hopes for the baby. Along with a few class gifts, Sharleen Moses presented a certificate to Underhill and her family in recognition of their contribution in building caring, peaceful and civil societies through the development of empathy in children and adults.

Students enjoyed watching the baby crawl, singing songs and finished celebrating by sharing Baby, Blakely Underhill, during the Roots of Empathy wrap-up on April 16.

Stained Glass Workshop At Lighten Up Therapy

Seven participants signed up for the Stained Glass Workshop at Lighten Up Therapy and Wellness in Vermilion on April 21.

The workshop was led by artist, Brandi Penrose, from Calgary who had instructed the Fairy Garden Class in March. To save time, Penrose had cut the glass ahead of time, and walked participants through using the Tiffany stained glass method where they prepped, foiled, bent wire, and soldered each piece together.

“These products are a fun take on stained glass, and can be used indoors or outdoors as wall-hangings or sun-catchers. I love the artistic life. I’ve been working with glass for the past 12 years, and left a corporate job to do this full time,” said Penrose who offers all kinds of mobile classes.

“This is my first experience and I am loving it already,” said Jannette Riedel.

Remember that outdoor maintenance can be just as important as indoor work for keeping your home in top shape and ready for living. A recent sur vey showed 91 per cent of Canadians spend up to six hours per week on yard work at their home. With the right kick-off strategy and tools, you

can minimize your work throughout the year.

Wait until your lawn is dry.

Keep yard maintenance minimal while your grass is still wet.

Heavy foot traffic on a wet lawn may damage the grass and its roots, causing more work later if you need to re-sod.

Clean up debris.

During the winter, a blanket of snow may cover any remaining debris in your yard, but now that the snow has melted, it ’s time to clean up any leaves you may have missed, branches that have fallen, and any garbage in the

Prepare for your first cut of the season.

Vermilion Legion Celebrating 100th Anniversary

The Royal Canadian Legion Field Marshall Alexander Branch No. 11 will be celebrating their 100th Anniversary in Vermilion on May 12.

Festivities will begin with a military display hosted by the Canadian Armed Forces 3rd Division Recruiting Centre at the Vermilion Legion from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Branch members will be there to socialize with, and there will be hamburgers and pop available for $5 with all proceeds going to the restoration of the soldiers plot at the Vermilion Public Cemetery.

A formal celebration will take place at the Vermilion Regional Centre with comradeship beginning at 5 p.m. Dignitaries will be introduced at 6 p.m., the banquet will begin at 7:15 p.m., and a dance will follow. Tickets for the formal celebration are $35, and are available at the Legion Branch by call-

ing 780-853-5867, the Town Office, Northern Lights Realty, or Fantasy Flowers.

Formal tickets include a copy of the new book celebrating 100 years of the Vermilion Legion titled, “We Will Remember Them”

by Charlotte Smith. The book includes a reprint of “An Instinct of Comradeship” by Allen Ronoghan as well as a recent accumulation of historical accounts of veterans. The in-depth collaboration works to showcase the Vermilion Legion’s past 100 years.

“I believe the book will be quite interesting for the history of Vermilion including lots of great photos and more information from area families,” said Poppy Chairman, Marcel Lefebvre.

According to Lefebvre, the organization used to be called the Great War Veterans Association. The group founded in Vermilion in 1917 and became incorporated in 1918.

The Ver milion Gir l Guid es held an Advancement Par ty at the Glad Tidings Pentecostal Church in Vermilion on April 18.

“I think it’s a good organization for teaching confidence and life skills,” said Trac ey Allen, Vegreville and Vermilion District Commissioner.

Girls aged 5 - 17 have been meeting weekly since September acquiring badges, and making crafts throughout the year. This year, Allen took her Sparks group along with the Brownies group to Lloydminster where they enjoyed painting, pottery, swimming, and lunch. According to Allen, the interac tion and overc oming some obstacles with the girls was outstanding. “ By allowing them out of their comfort zones and working together, some of the girls were able to face the uncertainty of slides and conquer their fears. By the end of the day they didn’t want to leave. A large benefit of this organization is having the oppor-

tunity for all age groups to meet at the same time. Hosting seasonal parties together a lot of mentorships takes place with the younger girls being able to look up to the older ones,” said Allen.

A slideshow from throughout the ye ar a n d a r e c e nt t r i p to O t t awa was viewed. Field trips are some times a way of ac quiring badges.

For instance, for a historical badge, a visit to the museum may be incorporated. A recent lodge tour allowed so m e g ui d es to d e c or ate mu f fins with the seniors and was a fun way of kee p ing par ti c ipant s eng ag e d.

Allen also noted that the larger trips are an encouragement for the girls to continue. In 2019, some of the Vermilion Girl Guides will be making a trip to Paris. “ We’re always looking for volunteers, and next year will be in need of a guide leader,” said Allen.

2nd Annual Rod Kirby Memorial Classic Golf Tournament

The Lloydminster Minor Football Association (LMFA), will be hosting their 2nd Annual Rod Kirby Memorial Classic Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 26. The day is planned as a memorial first, golfing second and a fundraiser third.

Kirby was a major contributor and member of the LMFA and believed in growing strong citizenship through the sport and also believed in building a strong program. He donated funds through his business and was a

coach, manager and President.

The LMFA wants to keep Kirby’s l e g a c y a l i ve a n d a r e l o o k i n g f o r former members of the LMFA, Football programs, members and community businesses to help keep Kirby’s legacy alive and offer the following s p o n s or pac kag e s. Lakeland Celebrates Energy Park Site Official Opening

(Lloydminster, Alta.) – Lakeland College officially opened its Energy Park Site on April 18.

Dignitaries, industry partners, alumni, students, employees and friends of the college celebrated the opening of the threeacre industrial site just west of Lloydminster. The site includes two large buildings that now house Lakeland’s street rod technologies (SRT) and truck driver training programs.

Lakeland acquired the Energy Park Site through the generosity of a private donor.

Valued at $2.7 million, it is the largest philanthropic gift in the college’s history.

“We’re thankful for this generous donation. With this wonderful addition our street rod technologies students are turning their passion for vehicles into rewarding careers and our truck driver training program finally has a permanent location,” says Alice Wainwright-Stewart, Lakeland’s president and CEO. Donor Barry Anderson says the celebration is all about the college, the students, and this facility that they’ll use for years to come. “I’m proud to be a part of it, but I was only one piece of a lot of moving parts to get to this point. What they’ve done to the site is amazing and unbelievable. I’m glad this has worked out for the college and for the younger generation to be able to have an

educational facility like this.”

Officially opening the Energy Park Site is significant for Lakeland’s School of Trades and Technology and its students. “This innovative facility is filled with outstanding potential for Lakeland to grow its presence in industry, and to train students with current, industry-relevant programming,” says Dave King, dean of the school.

“We’ve been able to increase our capacity for enrolment in our SRT program, as well as have all of the tools they need to

excel under one roof and have additional space for them to keep their personal projects,” King says. “For our truck driver training program, the location is its first permanent home. Before, we parked our trucks and trailers at either campus or in area parking lots. Now, our equipment is safely stored inside the north building at the Energy Park Site, shielded from the elements.”

SRT students learn to customize and restore vehicles in this one-year certificate program. They learn about vehicle design,

electrical systems, frames, suspension and more. Using specialized tools, students develop valuable skills in metal shaping, custom painting and welding, among others. In addition to finding employment in the restoration and fabrication industry, SRT graduates have the opportunity to challenge the auto body prepper apprenticeship exam. Alberta Colleges Make Significant Impact On Provincial Economy

Alberta students are much better off with a post-secondary education, raising students’ earning potential, and increasing their employability. Students with a college education earn more than individuals with a high school diploma. In fact, individuals with a college diploma in Alberta will earn $49,500 at the midpoint of their careers, $17,300 more than someone with a high school diploma; and will earn approximately $640,100 more over their working lifetime. Alberta CCIs are important employers in the province. The total income they created during the analysis year as a result of their day-to-day operations was $599.4 million, which is equivalent to supporting 5,968 jobs in the province. In the same year, new construction on college campuses equaled $24.3 million in added income for Alberta.

Taxpayers enjoy a wide range of benefits because of their investment in colleges.

As students earn more, they pay higher taxes. The net present value of the added tax revenue stemming from higher lifetime student earnings and increased output of businesses amounts to $1.6 billion. The average annual return on taxpayer invest-

ment is 16.3 per cent.

Statistics show that students with advanced education are more likely to develop good health habits, commit fewer crimes, and depend less on income assistance.

Society will benefit from $87.2 million in present value social savings related to reduced crime, fewer demands for income assistance, and increased health and well-being across Alberta. For every $1 invested in colleges, society receives a cumulative value of $7.30 in benefits.

Colleges benefit Alberta’s businesses by increasing consumer spending. In turn, businesses that hire college graduates help build Alberta’s communities. Approximately 90 per cent of students remain in Alberta once they achieve their educational goals, building careers, families, and communities that support the province’s economy. The enhanced skills of welltrained college students make the businesses that hire them more productive.

The top industries impacted by Alberta colleges are Health Care & Social Assistance (~$1.2 billion); Public Administration (~$771 million); Utilities (~$437 million); Real Estate and Rental and Leasing (~$239 million); and Professional Scientific

and Technical Services (~$226 million).

Today thousands of college alumni are employed in Alberta. The accumulated contribution of former students employed in the provincial workforce amounted to $4.1 billion in added income or 35,600 jobs supported during the analysis year.

April 10 saw our VES Jaguars at the Klondike Relays Track Meet in Edmonton once again. Thirty-four excited athletes travelled to the Butterdome and competed against 18 other schools from all over Alberta. As always, our students were great sports, great competitors, and great representatives of our school. We came home with the following ribbons: Grade 5/6 Girls Long Jump – 10th place out of 20 teams, Grade 4 Boys 4x200m relay - 8th place out of 43 teams, Grade 5/6 Boys Ball Throw 9th place out of 22 teams, Grade 4 Boys Long Jump - 9th place out of 20 teams, and Grade 4 Boys Ball Throw - 10th place out of 21 teams. The athletes will be presented with their ribbons at our May 2 assembly.

On April 13, the Grade 3 classes organized a Hat Day fundraiser as part of their global citizenship unit in social studies. This meant that with a donation of $1, students could wear a hat all day at school.

All proceeds are going towards helping people in need and improving their quality of life. VES raised a total of $232.45 to donate to Kiva, which is a non-profit orga-

The BTPS Superintendent’s Speech Competition is happening on April 27 at JR Robson School. VES had their final judging on April 16 by Rotarians Rebekah Warkentin, Tannis Henderson, and Charlene Carey. The top Grade 4 student was Katie Sargeant, Grade 5 was Ava Crowe and the Grade 6 student was Kira Jaremko.

Congratulations to all the girls. Kira was chosen by our judges to represent VES on April 27.

The Grade 2 students had their last visits with their babies this week. They celebrated their babies by remembering the very first visit, reflecting on the relationship they have built with their baby, noting how much the babies have grown, and giving gifts of wishes for the baby’s futures. The class concluded with everyone enjoying cake together. Both babies were quick to dig right in and everyone had fun watching them enjoy their cake. The heart of the Roots of Empathy program is the family that brings the living experience of empathy to the students, playing a vital role in changing the world classroom by classroom. We are so lucky and thankful for our families and their contributions in building caring, peaceful, and civil societies through the development of empathy in children and adults.

We also thank the Town of Vermilion and County of Vermilion FCSS for their financial

support which ensures we can continue the Roots of Empathy program for many more students to come. The students of today are the citizens and parents of tomorrow.

At our School Council meeting, Mrs. Webb shared that she will be leaving VES on May 1 to take on a new role as the Deputy Superintendent of Buffalo Trail Public Schools. Mrs. Doherty will take over as the acting principal and Mrs. Tupper will be taking over as the acting assistant principal. We are very fortunate to have Miss West take over for Mrs. Tupper for the remainder of the school year. Miss West has just completed her practicum with Mrs. Tupper, so we are very excited to have her join our VES family. Mrs. Doherty and Mrs. Webb showcased the Dash and Dot robot-

Stingrays At The Provincials

special because it incorporates different dance forms such as ballet. The origins of it are pretty cool. For male dancers, the dance moves originated in the Ukraine during the days of the Kozak army with men defending their land and their families.

High flying moves and kicks were often used in battle, and so the dances are very powerful and masculine,” said president, Jason Stelmaschuk.

The club will be hosting their Year End Recital on April 28, at 4 p.m. at the Alumni Theatre in Vermilion.

Pat Carey Feature Quilter

Vermilion Quilters Guild Submitted

Pat Carey is the featured quilter for the Vermilion Quilters Guild 21st Annual Guild Show.

Pat married and joined her husband Duncan in Vermilion in 1969. She worked part-timeas a registered nurse at the clinic, nursing home, and hospital until taking the position of Co-ordinator of Health Services at Lakeland College in 1976.

Pat had learned to sew as a member of the Marwayne 4-H Clothing Club and looked forward to learning quilting skills when she became one of the original charter members of the quilting group formed in 1997.

She retired from Lakeland College in 2000 but six weeks of retirement was enough, and she started working four days a week as a research Nurse and Co-ordinator of the ALS Clinic at the University of Alberta. These were busy years and enjoying her work, children, grandchildren and farm life left little time for quilting.

Pat managed a successful retirement in 2009, although she says it was not easy.

Being able to re-join the Vermilion Quilters provided a wonderful opportunity for friendship and creativity. She has been an active guild member since then.

Pat enjoys exploring other aspects of art mediums. Some of her watercolours and oil paintings will be on display with her quilts.

She is also a writer and reciter of cowboy everyone during the quilt show and too poetry, and a lover of history, antiques, and many more years learning the art of quilting. all things vintage. She has always enjoyed riding a good horse, but with semi-retirement at the farm and no more cows to chase, she has started learning to drive a horse and cart.

Her many interests are reflected in her artistic endeavours. Many of her quilts are very traditional, but she also has an eye for colour and unusual techniques, so her display is very eclectic. Look for her thickened dye painted quilt, her fractured quilt, and her landscape quilts. Very recently she has begun incorporating felting into her work.
