Allen owned an oilfield business for the past 12 years and worked in the oilfield for 21 years. Proceeds from the event will be going to support the Kitscoty Hall, and president of the Hall board, Rick Evans said, “Kitscoty is becoming an active theatre community between this event and the elementary and high school groups. We would like to thank the many volunteers needed to make this work, and the community and
area for their support. I like being a part of a small community because with all kinds of community events, when you see people step up and support, it becomes really noticeable.” Several raffle prizes were also up for grabs with some being chosen each
night, and some drawn after the final performance. Overall, the crowd enjoyed the many 80’s flashbacks and radical show. The nostalgic play also had a performance on April 7, and will continue on April 13 – 14.

Vermilion RCMP Report
Vermilion RCMP Submitted
In the month of Fe br u ar y 2018, Ve r m i l i o n R C M P r e s p o n d e d t o 211 calls for ser vice. Of those, 73 are traffic related, 50 are property crimes, 21 are persons crimes, 19 are false alarms, nine are domestic related, three are related to mental
health concerns, one is an animal complaint, and 35 are other calls for service. During this time, 25 criminal code and 8 provincial (tickets) charges were laid. Files of note: Vermilion RCMP stopped a vehicle with a stolen licence plate attached. The vehicle occupant was arrested and a search revealed a small quantity of Methamphetamine. As a result
of the investigation, 27 year old Crystal Townsend- Cook of Wainwright, Alberta was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of stolen property under $5000. This matter remains before the courts. Vermilion RCMP responded to a complaint of a male driving a suspected stolen vehicle. Members were able to locate the vehicle along with the suspect at another house where it is
alleged he attempted to break in and steal additional items. The suspect was located and taken into custody. As a result of the investigation, 32 year old Andrew Prill was charged with seven criminal code offences including break and enter, possession of stolen property (x2), failing to comply with a probation order, mischief, assault and uttering threats. This matter remains before the courts.

Flapper pie is a vintage prairie classic that is a uniquely Alberta Saskatchewan desert. It is made with simple ingredients that are usually found at home. It is an elegant custard in a graham wafer crust topped with a delicate meringue. This recipe began in the early 1900’s and continued as a favourite until the 1970’s. It dropped off in the 1970’s when Jello pudding and pie filling packages became the modern convince food for busy women who were then entering the workforce and raising families. With the renewed interest in cooking from scratch, flapper pie has been making a comeback. I remember

Not sure if any of you out there think about anonymity but the recent Facebook admission of having had their company’s user data harvested in a nefarious fashion to the toll of 87 million accounts has me wondering if anyone values their own anonymity any more. So why would a guy that grew up in a rural town writing for the town paper value anonymity? Surely I would be accomplishing the exact opposite here, advocating it while putting my name to it. Ideas go far beyond the individual though and anonymity, much like air, has an invisible but intrinsic value. We don’t notice it a lot day to day but when it is gone you can’t deny it being a drawback. Well, for one thing anonymity was something you didn’t have a whole lot of in a small town. Your parents knew pretty much everyone for a 60km radius and through them everyone knew you. In my case it seemed like the whole county was covered. “Which <parent surname> do you belong to?” was a commonly heard

my mom making this pie, and if she didn’t have graham wafers, she made a basic pastry pie crust for it. You can also use brown sugar in the graham wafer crust, and it tastes especially good. This recipe is a true flapper pie, but it is made in a rectangular cake pan. It is one of the desserts I made for a recent family gathering. We all love flapper pie, and I knew that one pie wasn’t going to be quite enough, so I wondered if I could make it into squares by increasing the recipe. A bit of math calculating with pi R squared, (no pun intended) allowed me to adjust my pie recipe, to take up the right amount of square inches in a rectangular pan. It worked out really well. I made it with whole milk, and the extra creaminess made it taste extra good, but you can use 2 percent milk as well.
Fair warning: once you try this recipe, you may be making this prairie treasure again and again. Flapper Squares Crust 1 1/2 cups graham wafer crumbs 1/3 cup melted butter 1 tablespoon sugar (white or brown) Melt the butter and then stir in the remaining ingredients. Reserve 2 tablespoons of this mixture. Press into a 9x 13-inch rectangular baking pan. Filling 3 1/4 cups milk 4 tablespoons cornstarch 5 egg yolks 1/2 cup sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla 1 tablespoon butter (optional) Combine all the ingredients except the
butter in a heavy-bottomed pot. Cook on medium-low heat, stirring with a whisk until thickened. Stir in the butter and then pour into the prepared pie crust. Meringue 5 egg whites 2 tablespoons sugar plus 1 teaspoon 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar (optional) Combine the ingredients and beat with an electric beater until the eggs form soft peaks. For successful meringue be sure that there is absolutely no egg yolk in the egg white mixture. It is also useful to know that the egg white will whip up better at room temperature. Top the filling with the meringue. Sprinkle on the reserved graham crumb mixture and bake at 400 degrees for 5 minutes until lightly browned. Allow the dessert to fully cool before slicing.
What Value Is Anonymity?

In the place where no one knew you, you perhaps did not have that built in safety net of knowing humanity around you, but you also didn’t have their strands of expectation holding you back from doing something new and different that may allow you some individual growth. Who hasn’t wanted to escape their shell by moving to a new place for awhile where every little aspect or mistake of your past isn’t known? Don’t put your arms up all at once. Perhaps it is a couple generations of youth, immersed in ever increasing advancement/encroachment of technology, that has gotten us to a situation where there isn’t enough life wisdom in the 20 year old coders in the room to ask the question: is the impact of what we are designing here actually a good thing? What could be the drawbacks? Maybe they haven’t had the experience with situations of having to reinvent themselves. Recording everything you do each day for posterity may seem great until you need your anonymity back because of youthful mistakes...and you can’t get it. And in the case of Facebook...the posterity of all your choices and proclivities being harvested to be summarily used against you.

I’m quite sure in 2004, the 20 year old self-styled hacker Mark Zuckerberg did not envision he was going to be both a future multi billionaire and be a weak link jeopardising democracy all at the same time. I don’t imagine he thought much beyond the code itself to the negative impact his application would attract once you have a user base of billions. Being a coder myself since my 20’s, I sure don’t remember those kinds of questions crossing through my mind or anyone else around me in the room. There was usually a lot of functional discussion, not much philosophising. Once you start involving billions of people in your contraptions though some wisdom really needs to be entering the room to say, “Whoa…hold on here. Did you think about this?” When it comes right down to it, a functioning democracy is built on the foundation of the secret ballot. The ability of an individual to go into a voting booth and
make a choice without being unduly influenced, without suffering any retaliation or repercussion, is fundamental to the health of our own freedoms and liberty. Not being an advocate for all rules and regulations here, but if business and corporations can’t get the boundaries with personal data figured out, I think we need to figure out how enforce the boundaries for them. I know it’s an analogy, but at one time hucksters and snake oil salesmen were able to sell alleged cure-alls with no repercussions to the actual safety of their products. Finally they had to be reined in by regulations on food and drugs for our own safety. Maybe the time has finally come for the industry involving data to be similarly reined in. It just can’t be the Wild West with personal data out there anymore. And my Facebook account has been rather quiet, lately.

Here is hoping that everyone had a safe and enjoyable Easter, o n e of t h e c o l d e s t s i n c e t h e 19 4 0 ’ s , somehow have to let old man winter know that spring has officially arrived, so much for March and “in like a lion out like a lamb” scenario. I’m ready for the big thaw, the bitter cold for this time of year is taking its toll on my winter aches and pains, as well it’s not doing much for my “giddy up and go” factor, if it wasn’t for my new full-time job, it would drive me up a wall. That fulltime job, of course, is my pup herd, who are quite enjoying the mild weather to them, for the dogs, it’s just right for all their energy they have to play every day, which seems endless, I swear they all have a smile on their face. Normally this time of year I have put on many hours of walking the trails looking for antler sheds, one of my favorite pastimes and adventures, exploring the outdoors and with several pups by my side it usually is an exciting time for me. Not that the antlers is the real prize for me, I realized many years ago, like fishing it’s not the fish I am after, it’s the adventure. However this year it’s not the cold that’s bothering me, it’s the two feet of snow the cold is letting linger. It’s a hardship for sure, too deep for walking on foot and a lot of hardship on snowshoes, as most of the snow is in drifts and in thick woods, where open areas are somewhat clear, and antlers are still frozen under snow and ice. As well my number one antler shed retriever, Miss Oohohh is quite busy these days with the new litter of fur babies, so when the time comes, I will have to take out the new trainee’s, most likely Sir Mukluk and
Miss Teek. Miss Teek, my Christmas present is now five months old, and huge, with Miss Oohohh spending all her time with the new pup’s, Miss Teek is by my side from sunrise to way past sunset every day, even while indoors until bedtime. In our daily schedule we do a couple of hours of training on remaining trails I have plowed out with the quad, mostly sled commands and pulling, she is going to make a great sled dog once she gets out of this teenage stage. Oh well, the cold weather does give me lots of time for new puppy cuddles, who are now with fully open eyes, exploring their new world, they are even walking around quite well now, making time with them very enjoyable. They seem to grow every day, as well as change in looks and personalities. However it’s all for the better, a few one can already see which ones are going to be the most adventurous as well as the very easy going ones. It’s going to be very hard to let several go to great homes, interest has been overwhelming, but we have been very selective on their new forever homes, we get a lot of interest from people that live in the big cities, but these dogs need lots of room to run. We haven’t shown the pups just yet, although many want to pick one right now, there are three; two males and one female that there is no question I am keeping, that would be “Thunder” and “Lightning” two males full of adventure. those two males, I am leaving that decision up to my wife, Roxanne. Who can’t make up her mind as she loves both, and they change every day, she wanted a big woolly male, which Mr. Mally is the biggest of them all and also has a coat that grows every day. Sir Snownose a darker red, but with a true snow nose, which means their nose is not full black, it has a red or pink strip on the full nose, he also has the red heart on the white chest, an irresistible and handsome pup. It is going to be a hard choice for her, but she will have to make up her mind soon before I get too attached to both, which means at this time we are keeping at very least the four pups for sure, which
will be a handful in every way. That means new kennels, more food, time and costs; I will be busy working overtime this coming year so that I won’t be getting bored soon, and also makes me wonder if I will ever get to retire from my retirement. When The Smoke Clears The old folklore saying “April showers-May flowers” may turn out to be “April flood-May mud” this year.

Commemorating The Battle Of Vimy Ridge

The 2645 Vermilion Army Cadet Corps held a 101 year commemoration of the Battle of Vimy Ridge at the Vermilion Cenotaph on April 8. The gathering was held to honour the sacrifice of the Canadian fallen, and the achievements of the Canadian Armed Forces. Members representing the corps included Captain Peter Albert, Sergeant At Arms Jim Bristowe, Master Warrant Officer Brandon Geese, Sergeant Blake Dutchak, Cadet Eric Zajic, and Sergeant Rhys Racine. “The Battle of Vimy Ridge was the first time in WWI that the entire Canadian Corps fought together in battle. During 1915 – 1916, both the French and the British had tried to take Vimy with heavy

losses and little success. From November 1916 – April 1917, the Canadians reinvented warfare as it was known at that time; including use of the creeping barrage. On April 9, 1917 the battle began at 5:30 a.m. and the Canadians had captured it by noon, with Hill 145 being taken on the morning of April 10. It was the battle that built a nation, making Canada a force to be recognized,” said Captain Peter Albert. According to Albert the battle saw 100,000 Canadian soldiers, suffered 10,0 0 0 casualties; 3,6 0 0 of which were fatal. Albert also noted that WWI saw 650,000 Canadian soldiers from a nation of eight million people at the time, and saw 66,000 fatalities and 170,000 wounded. He noted that 11,000 of the Sergeant Rhys Racine carried the 151st Battalion Flag at the Vermilion Cenotaph on April 8. 66,000 are still recognized as missing.

The Town of Vermilion received a clean audit report as well as a few other updates during their council meeting on April 3. Details of the audit were kept in camera. A motion was tabled to allow ATCO to answer questions at the next meeting, regarding a proposal to change streetlights to LED technology. A motion was carried to accept the proposal from Chamco Industries Ltd. for the supply of two 9.1L natural gas engines for a total of $188,360 plus GST and a 10 per cent contingency. The pumping engines will replace the aging east and west water reservoir backup pumps. “They’re 1960’s vintage with no parts available,” said Department Head Derek
Young. “These pumps are probably way past their prime, and wouldn’t be running if it wasn’t for the maintenance crew. We’ve been dealing with replacing them since 2015, and originally thought there could be a cheaper alternative. We received three quotes, and they are still expensive, but we need to deal with it because we wouldn’t want to be without a power backup in that area,” said Councillor Richard Yaceyko. This tender was not the cheapest, but the committee noted that the selected company was the only one to pick up on a right angle gear component and feels they may be able to foresee pitfalls during the transfer to the new pumps. The Airport Advisory committee noted that Geoff Hancock, a Vermilion resident

originally from Marwayne, will be entering into a purchase agreement for both the building and land of the Vermilion Airport. “This will be a critical success indicator for the revitalization of the Vermilion Airport,” said Mayor Caroline McAuley. The Good Life Institute Coordinator, Candice Anderson, delivered an update on their 2017 events and 2018 projections and said, “All of our events have grown exponentially. We’ve set a goal of 50 teams for the Race Of Vermilion for 2019, but will need more volunteers to make that possible.” The Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee put a motion forward to accept the tender for purchasing a lawn mower from Agland for $25,513.01 plus GST. Council carried the motion satisfied that the purchase was made within Vermil-
ion and that even though it was over the $20,000 budget, that it will be a valuable piece of equipment with their additional work at the Provincial Park this year. Councillor Justin Thompson announced that the Vermilion Public Library had Kill-A-Watt units available for patrons to check out in order to monitor their electricity usage, thanks to a donation made by Lyle Lawrence. During round table discussions, Councillor Tannis Henderson noted that Communities In Bloom is looking for new members to aid in providing a good service to the community. Councillor Richard Yaceyko noted the upcoming Let’s Talk Alberta Cannabis session on April 24. “It will be interesting to see how this community responds,” said Yaceyko.

Kicking up dust at the Marwayne Arena, nearly 30 leading professional bull riders participated in the 2018 Marwayne PBR event presented by Garnier Custom Silage from April 6 – 7. Over 600 people attended to witness the thrilling matchups between bull and rider. On April 6, an ABBI Futurity was held along with a Junior Steer Riding and Bull Riding. April 7 began with Wild Pony Races, and a Battle of the Breeders Bull Sale was held during intermission. Organized by the Marwayne Arena Board, proceeds including a 50/50 and several raffle items were donated to the Humboldt Broncos Go Fund Me page. With heavy hearts, competitors and audience members shared in a moment of silence for the 15 fallen members of the Humboldt Hockey Club. Announcer, Brett Gardener said, “Just like bull riders, hockey players are elite athletes attempting to live out their dreams.”

Notable riders included 2017 Champion Jordan Hansen, two time PBR Champion Zane Lambert, and the only three time PBR National Champion Aaron Roy. Roy said that he continues to love his sport after recovering from both a broken back and broken femur because, “It’s eight seconds; it’s a rush every time you get on!” Bull fighters included Monty Phillips, Josh Haeberle, and Levi Hale. Hale is a third generation bull fighter, who has been in the industry for the past seven years. Regarding the best part of his career he said, “It’s a really good feeling when you can save your friends.” With a multitude of mighty bucks, at the end of a long and short round, the Championship buckle was presented to Wyatt Gleeson. The Bull of the Night was awarded to Milky Chance from Flying Four Bucking Bulls. Overall, the crowd was enamoured with all of the excitement, and went on to enjoy Chase Theilen during the Marwayne PBR on April 7. an evening dance with live music by The Prairie Dogs.

She has lived in Alaska and North Dakota and it was when they were living in Alaska she had the opportunity to study fine art. In 2017 she took first place in floral and second place in landscapes at the Lloydminster Arts without Borders show. Working with a contractor who does business the right way means not having to lie awake at night worrying what the final costs will be, or if the job will even get finished. A cash deal with no contract is no deal at all.
Know what to expect. Ask a lot of questions before any work begins. Who will be at your home for each portion of the work? How will your day-to-day living be impacted? Should you consider moving out during any portion of the construction process? What if want to make changes? The more you know upfront about the whole process, the less anxious you’ll feel. Take an active role throughout the project. The best renovation results come from good communication between you and your renovation contractor. Ask for regular updates and know how to get hold of the contractor if you have questions
or concerns. Be prepared to spend time going over drawings, monitoring the project’s progress and fully discussing decisions. Don’t expect a problem-free renovation. The bigger the project, the more likely you’ll run into the unexpected, such as existing deficiencies hidden in the walls, delays in special orders or bad weather. With a lot of hard work from our Senior Administration Team, ONPA Architects and Chandos Construction, the scope of the project was reviewed and the team was able to reduce the scope without impacting the integrity of the project. With the scope reduction and assistance from Alberta Education/Infrastructure, we were able to get the project on budget, thus allowing the Board to pass a motion to enter into a contract with Chandos Construction to build the Irma Replacement School. “We are excited to be working with the community of Irma in this joint venture. It’s rewarding to see this legacy project come together as an excellent example of school boards and community working together,” said Trustee Archibald.
The changes that were made to reach our budget did not compromise any of the components of the new school. “The Board is committed to ensuring that our facilities are meeting the learning needs of students. Irma School is another example of providing our students with the most up to date learning environment,” stated Board Chair Darcy Eddleston. The new school design is impressive! Collaborative learning spaces have been incorporated into the structure that provides flexibility in program offering. Superintendent Bob Allen shared, “We are excited to be able to offer the students a state of the art facility that will serve their needs and the needs of future generations in the community.” We will see work begin on site in the next few weeks with a target opening date of September 2019! The Vermilion Quilters Guild would like to invite you to their 21 Annual Quilt Show May 5 and 6. The quilts you will see are not your great grandmother’s quilts made out of necessity from recycled clothing or scrap fabric pieces. Traditional quilt designs are very much in evidence as are quilts representing the modern quilt movem e n t w h i c h a r e o f te n a b s t r a c t o r graphic geometric designs art quilts are those quilts that depict realistic images of people or landscapes. A quilt must consist of three layers, the top, the interior batting and the backing. The quilts in the show will be of all sizes and shapes from king size bed quilts to 6” x 4” postcards [that can actually be mailed], and all sizes in between: lap quilts, crib quilts, wall quilts, quilted pillows, quilted bags, table runners and placemats. If you can conceive it a Vermilion quilter can
create it. The quilt top and often the quilt back are pieced and then the three pieces are layered. Quilting is actually the process of joining the layers together. In the past, this process was done by hand with the fabric layers held together on a quilting frame or in a quilting hoop. Now quilting is often done by machine, on a domestic home sewing machine or on a long arm machine, a large machine capable of quilting king size quilts that can be hand guided or computer guided. All these quilting methods require skill and expertise developed over time with much practice. Quilters at the Vermilion Quilt Show create high-quality works of art. Stepping into the Regional Centre one is immediately surrounded by beautiful, eye - catching colours and designs. Over 200 quilts are shown annually. Guild members also create quilts to donate. Local organizations, the Stol-
l e r y C h i l d r e n ’s H o s p i t a l , a n d Women’s Shelters have all been recipients. This year donation quilts will go to the Cross Cancer Hospital, Quilts of Valor, an organization donating quilts to injured veterans, and a few will be kept on hand for people experiencing emergencies in our community. Look for these quilts in the foyer of the Vermilion Regional Centre May 5 and 6. If you have attended a previous show come and view the new quilts and meet some of the quilters. If this is your first quilt show come and experience a new adventure. Plan to stay and enjoy soup and sandwiches for $2.50 each and/or coffee and cookies for a silver donation. In math the Grade 5’s have been doing Division, Data, and Probability. In Division
they have been dividing 3 digit by 1 digit. They learned about firsthand data and second-hand data. Our Grade 6 class are looking at their next two units in science: Air and Aerodynamics and Flight. In Air and Aerodynamics they will be exploring the characteristics of air and the interaction between moving air and solids. They will also be experimenting with the idea that moving air can support solid materials in sustained flight. This idea will lead them to their next unit on Flight. In this unit, students will build and test a variety of flying devices with the background knowledge they have acquired from Air and Aerodynamics.

Players, coaching staff, donors and families gathered at the Vermilion Royal Legion for an evening of honouring this group of young men for their accomplishments throughout the season. After a delicious meal, MC, Carla Protsch began the Awards portion of the evening. The entire team was congratulated for making playoffs for the second season in a row and for battling until the very last game. Considerations For Your Cropping Plan
An Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF) specialist says there are a few points producers should consider before committing acreage to some of the less common cropping alternatives such as flax, camelina, pulses, and hemp. “Every year we have the challenge of finding profitable crops to grow. The first step in crop planning is determining the various costs of production,” says Harry Brook, crop specialist, with the Alberta Ag-Info Centre. “By knowing your total production costs, you can find out where the combination of crop yield and price becomes profitable.” Brook says it’s extremely important to select crops that are profitable and acceptable to both the producer and their banker. “Why grow something that guarantees a loss? Anyone can make money at $14 per bushel canola, but what about at $10 with a less than average yield? You can’t grow canola all the time. Once the production costs are all known, you can then use them as a tool to find cost savings without foregoing too much yield.” With any new crop you try, start small. “Use the first year as a chance to learn the agronomics and particulars of the new crop. When growing a new crop, it is imperative to get a contract first before you grow it. You need to know there is a home for it,” explains Brook. “When
there was significant acreage of borage in 2005, contracts only accounted for a small part of the crop. It took a long time to find a home for the majority of it. With hemp, Health Canada requires paperwork before you can grow it. There is also a requirement for inspection of the crop, and all harvest seed must be sold to the company you bought your seed from. If production contracts are not available, take that as a sign it may be hard to sell and not be readily marketable. You also need to consider storing that crop.” Pulse crops are valuable to grow for their reduced fertilizer requirements and the additional benefits for following crops as they extract nutrients from the crop residue. Says Brook, “Peas, lentils, and faba beans all provide a nitrogen benefit and have established markets. However, recent trade issues with India have dropped the price of peas and lentils, making those less profitable. Peas grow throughout the province, but there are issues related to standability. Lentils grow best in the brown and dark brown soil zones. Faba beans will grow well in the black and grey wooded soil zones but they take a long time to mature and should be seeded early.” Brook notes that there are two distinct and separate markets for faba beans. “The low tannin faba beans are almost totally marketed to the hog industry as a soybean replacement. There is also a human consumption market for the high
tannin varieties of faba beans. Insect pests can be a problem with quality, as sucking insects mark the seed. Markets are up and down and you need to assure yourself there is profit from growing them.” Above all, Brook advises caution. “Become informed on issues related to any new crop, both for growing and marketing it. Talk to people who already
produce it. Crunch the numbers on anticipated costs and returns to make sure the experiment doesn’t end up costing too much. Learn from other’s mistakes, don’t make your own.” “By taking care of the details when planning cropping changes, you can do everything you can to make ensure a profitable outcome, and not just a bill for the education.”

Vermilion Dance Association Dance Festival Submitted The Vermilion Dance Association will be hosting the 28th annual Vermilion Dance Festival on April 13 & 14 at Lakeland College’s Alumni Hall Theatre. “It’s a great opportunity for a club our size to host such a great group of dancers from the area at our festival,” said the festival coordinator Janelle Mailhot. Local dance schools are expected to be participating, and over 200 entrants range from solo and duet to small and large groups. The categories of dance performed will include tap, jazz, classical ballet, character ballet, demi-character ballet, song and dance, lyrical, modern, Irish, Highland, production, hip-hop and variety by all ages. “Our area sponsors really stepped up this year, and we are so excited to offer over $2,400 in scholarships and awards to top performers,” said Mailhot. “A new feature is the Saturday night ‘Showcase’ featuring the top scoring groups and solos from the festival. It is a nice way to close out our festival. Everyone
should come out for that.” Each day of the festival will include three sessions. Friday’s session will begin at 9 a.m., 1:45 p.m. and 6 p.m. and Saturday’s sessions begin at 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and the Showcase start at 7 p.m. “ O ve r t h e ye a r s , V DA h a s h a d tremendous support from the community. It is great for our local dancers to look out while they are performing and to see friendly faces cheering them on. We hope to see you then,” said Mailhot. Vermilion Dance Association has been providing dance instruction to area students for over 25 years. Our non-profit group has taken pride in being able to provide every student the opportunity to dance at a reasonable rate, affordable to all. Please check out our Facebook page for more information.
